At the beginning of new year, I would like to share my image of Salgueiro which is one of the most traditional samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. People are practicing dance and song every week until carnival which will be starting on March 1st this year. I love the sprits of carnival so much that if you're poor or rich, men or women, young or old, and Brazilian or not, all you could share the same special moments. Wishing you all have a wonderful year, and celebrate your lives in 2014. Saúde! 　新年の初めに、一枚の写真をシェアさせていただきたいと思います。これはリオデジャネイロの「サルゲイロ」というサンバスクールでの一コマです。サンバスクールはブラジル各地にあり、カーニバルのために歌や踊りを練習するところ。パレードに出演するメンバーはもとより地元の人々も夜な夜な集い、カーニバル本番まで毎週みんな一緒くたになって盛り上がっています。貧富の差や老若男女にかかわらず、そしてブラジル人かどうかというのも関係なく、同じ場所で同じ瞬間を楽しむことができる、そんなカーニバルのスピリットは素晴らしいと思います。今年のカーニバルは3月1日から。2014年が皆さんにとって素晴らしい年となり、またそれぞれに素晴らしい人生をセレブレートできますように。Saúde!

ISOLDA sneakers are freshly packed like fruits

I got a new pair of sneakers from Rio de Janeiro! An up & coming brand called ISOLDA has just made a new collection of sneakers collaborating with Converse. They are made of beautiful water color prints and packaged like tropical fruits in a wood box.

The designers are 3 Brazilian girls, Alessandra & Juliana Affonso Ferreira and Maya Pope. 3 of them used to live in Salvador, Bahia where a lot of fruit trees in their back yards such as cashew, mango and guava etc. etc. Later they went to school in London and decided to launch the brand together in 2011. The name of brand is a homage to Alessandra & Juliana's great grandmother.

In addition to fruits, I love images of sea creatures such as lobster ( my sneakers!), octopus, and shells. All the images of water color are really fresh and juicy to make us feel Brazilian bleeze.

The sneakers are exclusively avairable at 2 stores in Brazil, Dona Coisa in Rio and Cartel 011 in Sao Paulo.

Officially summer 2013 has been finished, and now we all have to look for next spring/summer to plan our wordrobes. Let me share my favorite images of NY fashion week. Some images came out really nice with "Instagram magic". Of course there are more collections that I like, but unfortunately photo didn't came out very well.

Neon art by Kleber Matheus in Marseille

End of summer 2013, my Brazilian friends invaded Marseille! Neon art by a Brazilian artst, Kleber Matheus was installed inside FRAC building which was newly opened this year designed by a Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma. Kleber was the first artist-in-residence there, and created the installation this summer.

For the opening, many of his Brazilian friend got together from all over the world, including Dudu Beltholini, on the left who is actually a designer for a Brazilian fashion label called "Neon". Kleber is in the middle, and Vanessa Silva, London based Brazilian textile designer on the right.

He used mainly recycled neons from local stores in Marseille for the installation. Mixing some tropical prants added Brazilian feeling. Nice!

In addition, there was a launch party of "2 Fanzine" newest issue that Kleber has made art directions since the beginning. The issue is including some paper masks.

Oh, I missed you all! Here are all the gangs in front of FRAC. Kleber's art instralletion will be showing until September 28th at both FRAC and Agnes b. store in Marseille. If you're around please check it out.

フィリペ・ジャルジンに出逢ったのはたしか2006年のはじめのことでした。サンパウロファッションウィークのバックステージ。マダガスカルだったか、どこかへ行った後で髭は延び放題、Tシャツにショートパンツの軽装でいわゆるファッションピープルとは全く違う雰囲気だったのです。あのルイヴィトンからイラストの本を出した、というふれこみだったのでとても意外な印象を持ちました。

そのときは雑誌用の仕事をお願いしたひとりのクライアントだったわけですが、いつの間にやら友達になり、そしていつか一緒に本を作ろう、そんな話もするようになりました。

真っ白な画面に自由自在に伸びるライン。下描きなしで、心のままに描かれたフィリペ・ジャルジンのドローイング作品のほとんどは、写生のスタイルをとっています。

今月末に発売される初の作品集『スケッチ＆スナップ』には世界各地の風景や旅先で出逢った人々の表情、ファッションウィークのバックステージでとらえたモデルたちの自然な姿、そして故郷であるブラジルの豊かなカルチャーがおさめられています。瞬間をまるでスナップショットのようにみずみずしく切り取ったような作風で、そのラインからは書道かカリグラフィーを思わせる、いきいきとした手の運びが感じられます。

フィリペは1968年、ブラジルのリオ・デ・ジャネイロに生まれました。多くの“カリオカ”ボーイたちと同様、子どものころからビーチに通い、そして10代からサーフィンを始めました。イパネマ海岸は、アントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンが歌ったように、彼がティーンだった80年代当時も可愛いブラジリアンガールがたくさんいて、音楽やアートなどカルチャーの交差点であり、発信源でした。そこで出逢ったアーティストやボヘミアンたちの影響を受けながら、彼はアートの道へ進むことを決意したのです。

キャリアのきっかけはルイヴィトンが製作している旅の絵本シリーズ“Carnet de Voyage"のリオ・デ・ジャネイロ版の挿絵を担当したこと。折しもブラジルが進行経済大国BRICS諸国のひとつとして世界でも注目されはじめたときでした。その後、エルメスやティファニー、各国版の『VOGUE』などだんだんファッション関係の仕事も増えていきました。

でもユニークなのは彼の生き方の基本は全く変わらなかったということです。ひとりのサーファーとして海に恋している、といってもいい彼は常にサーフボードを抱え、世界中夏から夏へ、いい波と出逢いを求めて旅を続けたのです。

今回はおよそ10年間の彼のアーカイブから、約100点のドローイング作品、そして初公開となる写真作品約60点が収録されています。被写体は彼の友人たちを中心に、中にはブラジリアン人気モデルのラケル・ジマーマンやキャロル・トレンティーニなどの姿も。ほか、エルメスやルイヴィトン、パリのシャルルドール空港へ寄稿した作品も再録できました。

巻末にはマダガスカルや南アフリカ、ハワイや東京など、彼が辿った旅の軌跡を綴ったメモもつけています。彼自身の言葉で語られた、ライフスタイル論とともにページをめくるたび、自分もフィリペと一緒に旅をしているような気分になれる一冊です。

Patti Smith's words for Half Way of 2013

We've done half of 2013, and just started the other half today. Actually, these 6 months weren't so easy for me. Perhaps some people in the world might have been feeling big frustlations especially in Brazil, Turkey, and now Egypt. Lots of demonstrations have been happening all over the world this year.

Today, one of my friends shared an amazing interview with Patti Smith. She said "A writer or any artists can expect to be emblaced by people. You just keep doing your work. You have to. / Life is really difficult. / But on the other hand, you'll have the most beautiful experiences. / It's all worth it. "

I was inspired very much from William Burroughs advice for her when she was young and poor.

It's nice to watch at the beginning of the other half. Hope everything is going to be much better for everyone in the world by the end of 2013.

Spring Short trip to Pollock's Studio in East Hampton with Aesop

One day, I received a package of a poem book. It was Frank O'Hara who used to work at MoMA, and had many artist friends including Jackson Pollock. Actually, it was an invitation included for a press tour organized by Aesop to Pollock's studio and house in East Hampton as well as their newly opnend store in the same area.

He moved in East Hampton just after getting married to an artist, Lee Krasner in 1945. This is the exterior of his studio that many of his famous pieces were made. Actually, it's smaller than I expected.

There was a beautiful lunch setting at the yard of Pollock's. It's a perfect day for eating outside.

After lunch, we finally stepped into the studio. The floor itself looks like an art work. Layers and layers of paints....

We have to wear spongy slippers to protect the floor when we go inside the studio room. Smily faces are so cute on them.

Paint cans and some brushes etc. on the shelf in the studio. Feeling like he's still working everyday.

Here is Pollock & Krasner's house. When they purchase a small homestead on one and a quater acres, Peggy Guggenheim helped them for aloan.

Bed room. After Pollock's death in 1956, Krasner continued living here through her life until 1984.

Then, we headed to the final destination of the day, Aesop's new shop in East Hampton. We were welcomed with fresh lemonade. It was an intersting idea using real beakers. We discovered the new space, and were introduced some new products. We all were feeling so refreshed because of the art space and those natural beauty products. It was such a wonderful short trip in a spring day.

It's a small world like a ring / Satomi Kawakita's jewelry collection

Actually, I had found her jewerlry at Steven Alan in New York, and fell in love with the collection. The other day, my friend living in Kyoto introduced her for me. They went to school together long time ago in Japan.　先日、京都に住む友人が、学生時代の先輩だというジュエリーデザイナーさんを紹介してくれました。実はそのジュエリーは、以前スティーブンアランのお店で見かけ、いいなあと思っていたブランドだったので、とても嬉しく早速アトリエを訪問しました。

Her name is Satomi Kawakita, NY based Jewelry designer. She started her line in 2008. Before that, she was working in Diamond district as a professional diamond setter. ( I didn't know that kind job exists! ) 　NYを拠点にジュエリーを製作されている川喜多里美さん。2008年にご自身のラインをスタートされる前は、NYのダイアモンド街でプロのダイアモンドセッターとして活躍されていました（そんな職業があるのですね）。

She's born in Osaka, Japan and has been grown up with creative environments. She was always wearing her mother's hand made clothes when she was a child. She attended an art college in Kyoto, and encountered glass blowing. After few years, she came to the US for studying English. Eventually, she found her passion for making jewelry in New York. 　大阪出身で、幼い頃からお母さんが手づくりした洋服を着て育つなど、クリエーティブな環境にあった里美さん。京都の美術大学在学中には吹きガラスの世界にも出会います。数年後、英語を学ぶため渡米し、そのうちだんだんとニューヨークでジュエリー作家になりたいという夢がふくらんでいきました。

She says she especially loves making rings. Her design is so delicate, sensitive, and peaceful. Those rings are good for wearing a lot like she does. Bunch of rings make a harmony, and a story on fingers. Perhaps, each ring has kind of Japanese sensibility, however once they're stacked up they become cool NY looking. Take a look at the photo on top. That's her hand that could be a good show case of her collection anytime anywhere. Actually, many people noticed her rings on the street, and asked her where they could buy.　ジュエリーの中でもリングを作るのが一番好き、とのこと。そのデザインは本当に華奢で繊細な美しさがあり、どこかピースフルな感じがします。冒頭にあげた写真はご本人の指ですが、彼女のようにたくさん細いリングをレイヤードするのがおすすめだそうです。重ねられたリングは指の上でハーモニーを作り、またそれぞれのストーリーを語っているよう。ひとつずつのリングは実に日本的なセンシビリティが感じられますが、レイヤードすることによりNYらしいクールな表情になっています。実際、ストリートで里美さんがしているリングについて尋ねる人も多く、ご自身が歩くショーケースの役割をしているみたいです。

This is the newest piece of sapphire ring that I love so much. Looks like an antique ring, but at the sametime it's so sophisticated and modern. By the end of the studio visit, we found out we have so many mutural friends in NY too. It's such a small world like a precious ring that she's making.　私も一目惚れしてしまった最新作はサファイアを使ったリングです。アンティーク風でもありながら、とても洗練されたモダンなデザイン。スタジオを出るころには、NYにも共通の友人が何人もいることがわかりました。ほんとうに彼女が作るリングのごとく大切にしていきたい友情の輪、世界は小さいものですね。

NYで一番美味しいパンケーキを探せ！ Pancakes make people crazy

人の食欲とは恐ろしい。「食べ物の恨みは怖い」という諺もあるし、それがパンケーキのこととなったらなおさらなのである。

近ごろ日本では空前のパンケーキブームらしい。なぜかオーストラリアにある“世界一美味しい朝食を食べさせる店”のパンケーキがそれはそれは美味しい、という噂とか、それを食べるために何時間もかけてビーチ沿いにあるその店に行く人が絶えないらしい、とか、いろいろ噂が噂をよび、そして「なかなか食べられないから、実際食べたときに余計に美味しく感じる」という相乗効果も生んでいるような気がする。飢餓感がそのパンケーキの価値を上げている、というか。

私はその噂のパンケーキが食したことがないので机上の空論といえばそれまでなのだが、最近はといえばNYにいらっしゃる日本の皆さんとブランチするたびにパンケーキを探していらっしゃるので、私もそのブームに自然に参加しているような感じである。というか、もともとパンケーキ、私も好きだったんですけれど（笑）。

それでNYの友人たちと連れ立って、NYで一番美味しいパンケーキを探そうということになり、自称PPO（パンケーキ人民会議）を組織した。会長は某オークションハウスに勤務するKさんで、彼は日本美術の目利きであるばかりでなく、舌の方もそうとう肥えていてしかもパンケーキに関しては一家言どころか百家言ぐらいありそうな人である。そしてその奥さんであるMさん（自宅で100人規模のホームパーティをたびたび企画するおもてなしの達人でもあり、実は能役者でもあるという隠された才能の持ち主である）、そして私の３人でブランチをしようということになった。記念すべき第1回会議はNYの高級ホテル、あのFour Seasons Hotelが会場。実は第1回会議は、不可抗力によって中止されてしまったのだが（詳しい話は2回にわたる会長のリポートを読んでください。／彷徨える「パンケーキ人」の喩え／「『彷徨えるパンケーキ人』の喩え」最終章）、仕切り直しの第2回は無事2種類のパンケーキを試食することに成功した。

みるからに幸福感あふれる、ふかふかの座布団が2枚重なったような「バターミルクパンケーキ」（高級ホテルのパンケーキに似つかわしくない貧乏臭い比喩しか思いつかなくてすみません…）と、薄く焼き上げられたより上品なたたずまいの「リコッタパンケーキ」である。どちらも苺やオレンジの皮などフルーツのデコレーションと、Four Seasons Hotelのロゴがきらびやかに入った小さなボトル入り、特製メープルシロップがサイドに添えられている。ちなみにお値段はそれぞれ$25(バターミルク）、$26 (リコッタ）ということで、レストランのメインディッシュ並み。私はどちらかといえばバターミルクのほうに軍配をあげたが、果たしてこのプライスに見合うものだったかどうか？？　個人的な意見ではあるが…。

今日は、会長夫妻が日本で一番美味しいパンケーキということで推薦する「ホテルニューオータニ」のパンケーキミックスを自宅で試してみた。分量通り、卵1個、ミルク1カップといっしょに攪拌し、オイルをしいて熱したフライパンを1分間休ませてからパンケーキミックスの種を入れる。かなりもっちりとしたテクスチャーで、弱火でじっくりと2〜３分ずつ両面を焼く。すると、だいたい1.5㎝くらいの厚みのパンケーキが4枚でき上がった。バターを載せ、セットになっている特製メープルシロップもかけていよいよ試食！　バニラ風味のしっとりした肌理の細かいパンケーキに、バターとメープルシロップの程よく解け合った甘さが染み込んで、これぞ理想のパンケーキ！　と感激した味だった。しかも一箱¥399（アマゾン調べ）というお値段である。これをNYのカフェで使ったら人気メニューになること、間違いなしのような気がした。（本末転倒だが…）

NYのパンケーキから話が逸れたので、冒頭に掲げた写真のパンケーキに話を戻そう。これは私の家の近所にあるダイナーのパンケーキセットである。場所はLafayette StとGrand Stの角で、名前すら覚えていないような無名の店だ。朝11時までならコーヒー付きで3枚$4.99（もしかしてマクドナルドの朝食メニューよりも安い？）。使い込まれたダイナーの大きな鉄板で焼かれた、表面のこんがりとした焦げ目のパターンと、シンプルな味、室温で柔らかくなったバターとホットケーキシロップ（メープルシロップではなく）、これぞアメリカのお母さんの味、といったイメージである。(実際焼いているのはメキシカンのおっちゃんで、オーダーを取っているのは中国人のおばちゃんだが…）

ほか、個人的には今のところNYベストと思っているClinton St. Baking Co.のパンケーキもチャンスがあったら是非トライしてもらいたい。ここはメープルシロップを混ぜこんだバターが味の秘密なのではないか？　と思っている。ただ、月曜の午前中でも行列しているような状況で、よっぽど時間があるときでないと行けないというのが難点。ほか、私はまだ食べたことがないが、アッパーウェストサイドのGood Enough to Eatこそがベスト、といっている人もいる。

パンケーキやそれに似た形状の食べ物はアメリカだけでなくて、ヨーロッパやアフリカなどにもあり、その歴史は古代ギリシャにまで遡ることができるそうだ。最近日本で人気なのはふかふかのアメリカ風のようだが、そもそもパンケーキというのは、朝ご飯にぱっと作って食べる、カジュアルなメニューだったのではないか？　何時間も並んだり、何十ドルも払って食べるものでもないような気もするが……たかがパンケーキ、されどパンケーキである。

2 years since 311 in Japan

It's been 2 years since the biggest earthquake and Tsunami hit in Japan on March 11, 2011. I happned to be back there at that time, and experienced the earthquake at home. After the tragedy, I traveled in Japan. It was early spring, and I was so fascinating natural beauty, kindness, politeness, and people in Japan. Today, I would like to share some pictures that I photographed in March 2 years ago. Let's take a moment for praying for victims of the 311 tragedy, and think about future in Japan.

Photographes were taken at Kamigamo-shrine in Kyoto ( plum flowers), and at Tsubaki Grand Shrine in Mie.

Highlights at Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week

Fall 2013 season of New York Fashion Week has just been finished. I would like to share some images of my favorite shows/presentations photographed with Instagram. I attended about 50 shows this season. Actually, it's a lot, and I've been seeing NY shows over 10 years. However, I am still excited to see the shows all the time. ビル・カニンガムさんのこと

ビルさんを初めて見かけたのはたぶんもう12〜3年前のことだと思います。彼は『The New York Times』紙の人気写真コラム「ON THE STREET」でもう30年もストリートスナップの連載をしているフォトグラファー。いつも青いスモックジャケットを着て自転車にまたがり、ファッションショーの会場や街角などで撮影しています。写真に撮られたことも何度かあったけれど、掲載になったのは1回だけ。数年前の春、セントラルパークの桜並木、通称ピルグリムの丘でお花見ピクニックをしていたら、知らない間にビルさんがあの自転車で通りかかり、私たちのことを撮影していったのです。

今日発売になる『POPEYE』のスナップ特集の号でビルさんの特集をやりましょう、という話になったのは去年の11月のことでした。取材嫌いという噂だったので、インタビューをとるのは至難の業だなというのは重々承知だったのですが、木下編集長や担当の小笠原さんと綿密に計画をたて、まずは見本誌と一緒に依頼のためのお手紙をビルさんに送るところから始めましょう、ということになりました。

『POPEYE』がどんなに素敵な雑誌か、そして個人的にもビルさんのお仕事をとても尊敬していて、映画『Bill Cunningham New York』を観てすごく感動したということ、また実は撮影してもらったこともあって、その記事は本当に一生の宝物なのだということを書いたお手紙と雑誌の見本を数冊入れたパッケージをニューヨークタイムズ本社に送りました。同時に、ニューヨークでPR会社をやっている友人からのアドバイスで、ビルさんにコンタクトするのはFAXがベスト、というのでFAX番号を教えてもらい、見本の雑誌をメッセンジャーするから、ということを書いて送りました。その友人いわく「ビルさんはあの映画以来、特にかたくなに取材を拒否しているらしいから難しいかもしれない。でも本当にきちんとした人だから、時間はかかっても必ず返事はくれるはず」ということでした。

FAXと雑誌を送ったのが12月の初め。その後もう一回フォローアップのFAXを送っても返信がなかったので、12月の半ば、ニューヨークタイムズのオンライン版からビルさんあてにEメールを送ってみました。するとすぐに編集担当の人から返信があり、その夕方ビルさんご本人から電話がかかってきました。

「ストリートで写真を撮ってるビル・カニンガムですが……」

自分はニューヨークタイムズ専属なので他誌のためには何の協力もできないのだということを私に伝えました。そして「雑誌を送ってくれたけど、お返ししたいから取りに来てくれないかな？」とおっしゃるのです。私は、「差し上げたものだし日本の雑誌を見る機会もあまりないでしょうから、是非とっておいてください。またどこかのストリートでお会いできるのを楽しみにしています」といって電話を切りました。

直接取材のお願いは叶いませんでしたが、この5月に映画が日本公開になるということもあって、この機会にビルさんのプロフィール的な記事を作ろうということになりました。そこで改めてリサーチを始めたのですが、過去ビルさん本人が答えたインタビュー記事というのは皆無といっていいほど見つからなかったのです（私が調べた範囲ですが）。普通なら自分が主役のドキュメンタリー映画なのだから、公開に合わせて何かコメントくらい出してもよさそうなものですが、それさえも無く、またどうやら映画自体も未だ見ていないらしいのです。

過去、展覧会や写真集の話などは山ほどあったというのですが、それもずっと断り続けてきたビルさん。ストリートで写真を撮ることだけが彼にとっての一番の喜びであり、自分にスポットが当たるのをを出来るだけ避けてきた、無私無欲の人なのです。その昔、百貨店バーグドルフグッドマンのショーウィンドーでストリートスナップのテーマをやったことがあり、そのときビルさんの自転車やニューヨークタイムズの誌面が紹介されたことがありました。当時ディスプレー担当だったリンダ・ファーゴさんはお礼としてチョコレートを一箱ビルさんに贈ったものの、間もなくそれが返送されてきたそうです。華やかなパーティ撮影のときでも水さえ飲まない、という徹底ぶりが映画でも紹介されていましたが、プロとして何も受け取らないという姿勢を頑に守っているのでしょう。

そして記事も出来上がり校了になるというころ、見覚えのあるパッケージが私の家に郵便で届きました。それはなんと見本としてビルさんに送った『POPEYE』だったのです。封筒の宛名は、私が入れた手紙の住所が切り貼りしてあり、左上の差出人のところにはニューヨークタイムズ社の住所のステッカーとともに「Bill Cunningham 」と青い色鉛筆で書かれていました。おそらく、ビルさんご本人が書かれたものだと思います。そしてもしかしたらご本人が郵便局まで雑誌を持っていってくれたかもしれない、とも思いました。ニューヨークタイムズ社ほどの大新聞社なら提携しているメッセンジャーサービスもあるでしょうし、インターンの人などにお使いをお願いすることもできたはずです。でも、一番経費のかからない郵便で返送してくれた、というところが何ともビルさんらしいな、と感じました。

結局、ビルさんには何のお願いも出来なかったわけですが、こうしたやりとりを通してビルさんの心髄に少し触れることができたような気がして、本当に印象深い企画となりました。今、まさにニューヨークコレクションの真っ最中でもあるわけですが、ややもするとビッチになりがちなファッション業界の渦の中で、自分の道をコツコツと半世紀以上も歩んできたビル・カニンガムさん。彼に学ぶことはこれからもまだまだたくさんありそうです。

Summer Forever! in Tulum, Mexico

I've just finished writing for December issue of 2012. Actually, we already started to working on January 2013 issue, and going to see shows of Fall 2013 at the end of the month (it's in Brazil) ....too fast in the real life. Anyway, I just want to escape a while to check my snapshots of my summer vacation 2012 in Tulum, Mexico. It was amazing place. Hope some of you could enjoy my pictures & feel some fresh air.

I stayed at Papaya Playa Project built by Desigh Hotels. It is located a new coast line of Tulum, and totally blue sky and emerald green water beach!

At the hotel reception, many teletubbies like paper dolls are hung from the ceiling. Yes, it's DESIGN hotel ;-)

There are many historical ruins around the area. Let's play at Mayan pylamid for never ending world in 2012! By the way, the small house on the left is for dog maybe?

Swimming in a paradise, Grand Cenote in Tulum

It's one of the most amazing place where I've ever visited in the world. It's "Grand Cenote" in Tulum, Mexico. 　Tulum is located south of Cancun. Cenote means "well", fresh water caves. There are many cenotes in Tulum which are especially associated with the Riviera Maya. 　メキシコの南、ユカタン半島にあるトゥルムという場所にあるグランド・セノーテ。これまで私が訪れた場所の中でも、一生忘れないだろう素晴らしい体験をしました。セノーテとは“泉”のことで、多くは森の洞窟になっています。トゥルムには多くのセノーテがあり、これはリビエラ・マヤ地域の特徴でもあります。

Water is so clean, surprizingly transparent. When we went there, it's a very hot day. Howerver, it's cool around, and water was so fresh.　水は本当にクリーンで驚くほどの透明度。私たちが訪れた日はかなり気温が高かったのですが、あたりはひんやりとし、水も冷たくて気持ちがいいくらいです。

The deepest spot is 33ft/10m. We can enjoy snorkeling or diving inside. You'll see many small fish swimming in the water, bats are hanging out upside down, or flying in the cave. In the dark area, I found catfish. Sunlight made some beautiful patterns inside the water. There're many kinds of water plants too. 水深は約10mでシュノーケリングやダイビングも楽しむことができます。水の中には小さな魚が沢山泳いでいて、コウモリが鍾乳洞にぶらさがっていたり、飛び交ったりする光景にも出会いました。洞窟の奥にはナマズが泳いでいるのも発見！　また、水面下で太陽が美しくゆらめく光のパターンを作ったり、また色んな種類の水草も生息しているのが観察できました。

Grand Cenote is sorrounded by lots of tropical trees. Breathed the air deep inside myself, and I really felt the power of nature. Probably, Mayan people have been feeling the same for long time. It must be a sacred and mystical place. セノーテはトロピカルな樹々に囲まれたジャングルの中にあります。深呼吸をすると、大自然のパワーを感じることができるような気がします。きっと太古の昔からマヤの人々も同じように感じていたんじゃないかな。本当に神秘的かつ神聖な雰囲気が漂っていました。

Lotus flowers were about to bloom. Turtle families are living here. Quiet. Feeling pureness of the air. 蓮の花もあちらこちらで花をつけようとしていました。カメの家族も住んでいます。静かで清らかな空気が満ちあふれています。

This is a map of cenotes in Tulum. Many of them are actually connected via underground livers. We can find "Cenote Grande" in the middle of map.　こちらはトゥルムのセノーテマップ。多くのセノーテは実は地下で繋がっています。マップの中央あたりにあるのがグランド・セノーテです。

This is a view from the top. There are smaller cenotes near by. It's nice to walk around and discover the area. If there were a paradise, I thought it's like here. 　グランド・セノーテを上からみるとこんな感じ。近くには小さなセノーテもいくつかあるので、散策してみるのもおすすめです。もしも楽園というものがあるとしたら、きっとこんな感じなのではと思わせる、本当に素敵な場所でした。

Hats made of Brazilian Tree in the North East

This kind of tall tree is very typical in North East of Brazil. It's called Carnauba. People make the leaves dry and use them making some baskets or hats. 背のとても高いこの木はブラジルの北東部ではよく見られる種類です。カルナウバと呼ばれ、人々は葉っぱを乾燥させてバスケットや帽子を作る材料にします。

I visited Maria living in Apodi, Rio Grande do Norte. She told us that she loves sitting out side in front of her house, and making things all day long with those leaves which is actually very relaxing for her.　リオ・グランデ・ド・ノルテ州、アポジ村のマリアさんを訪ねました。彼女は家の前に椅子を出して座り、日がな一日カルナウバの葉っぱを編むのが好き、といいます。それは彼女にとってもリラックスできるひとときなのだそうです。

Her hands are never stopping while we're chatting. 　彼女は私たちとお喋りしている間もずっと手を動かしていました。

Here are some examples of hats. They're so pretty. Actually, I brought back one of them to New York because I really fell in love with their hats. It's became the coolest hat in my hat collection, this summer. Also it's my treature from my trip to Brazil. これらが完成品の帽子です。ほんとうに可愛らしくて、あまりに素敵だったのでお願いしてひとつニューヨークに持ち帰らせてもらいました。この夏の私のハットコレクションの中でもひときわクールな帽子になりました。そして今回の旅の宝物でもあります。

Maria has 2 daughters, Mercia ( middle) and Rosah ( top). She taught how to make things to them. Actually, Mercia is very good at making anything by hands. She's the one who's helping their neighbor, Benedita to make crochet parts for hammocks. It's beautiful tradition of Brazilian women to help each other. 　マリアさんはふたりの娘さんがいます。お姉さんのメルシアさん（中央）と妹さんのローザさん（上）。彼女は娘さんたちにもハンドメイドのもの作りを教えてあげています。中でもメルシアさんは手先が器用で、ご近所のベネディータさんが作るハンモックのハンドクロシェの飾りを作っています。ブラジルの女性たちはこんなふうに助け合いながらもの作りを続けている、そんな伝統はとても素晴らしいと思います。

Brazilian hammock is making family together

There are beautiful handicrafts in North East of Brazil. I visited Benedita and Zilma's family in Apodi, Rio Grande do Norte. 　ブラジルの北東部には素晴らしいハンドクラフトがたくさんあります。リオ・グランデ・ド・ノルテ州にあるアポジ村のベネディータさんとジルマさんを訪ねました。

Benedita is 82 years old, started making Hammocks about 40 years ago. Most of the Brazilian families have a sewing machine because they are still making many things at home which I think is a wonderful tradition today. She is using a kind of tecknique making laces with a sewing machine.　ベネディータさんは82歳。さかのぼること40年前にハンモックの製作を始めたそうです。ブラジルにはどんな家庭にもミシンがあって、今もなお、多くのものを手づくりしている、そんな伝統は本当に素敵なことだと思います。彼女はレースづくりのテクニックを使ったミシン刺繍をしています。

How artistic those abstruct holes made of intricate stitches are! 　繊細なミシンステッチによる抽象的な形のホールたち、なんともアーティスティックなこと！

Her daughter Zilma showed us some crochet pieces for decolations which will be sewing at both sides of a hammock. It is made by their neighbor, Mercia who's very good at chrochet lace making. This piece is including a name of person who ordered it. Most of hammpocks are made to order for villagers in Apodi.　娘のディルマさんはハンモックの縁につけるクロッッシェ編みの飾りを見せてくれました。これは近所に住むクロシェ編みの達人、メルシアさんが作ったもので、オーダーした人の名前が入っています。ほとんどのハンモックはアポジ村の人々が注文してから作る、カスタムメイドなのです。

There are 2 blue rocking chairs near the entrance in their house. We were sitting and swinging on those chairs and listeing a Brazilian mother and daugher's story. 　入口のそばには２脚の青いロッキングチェアが置かれていました。私たちはそれに座わり揺られながら、ブラジルの母と娘の物語を聞いたのでした。

She is a grand daughter of Benedita sitting by a window. She is curious to see our interview.　彼女はベネディータさんのお孫さん。窓辺に座り、私たちのインタビューを興味深そうに眺めていました。

When Benedita could make extra hammocks, her daughter Zilma is going to big cities and selling at markets. As a product, it's truly wellmade and beautiful. Hammocks make their family & community together, and actually their life better. They seem to be very proud of what they're making. 時間があって、余分なハンモックが出来ると、娘のジルマさんが街のマーケットへ売りに出かけます。彼女たちが手がける作品はひとつのプロダクトとして本当に美しく、そして完成度も高いものです。そのハンモックが家族やコミュニティをひとつにし、また自分たちの家計を支えてもいます。彼女たちは自分が作っているものにとても誇りをもっているようです。

Organic Cotton Farm in North East of Brazil

In July, I visited an organic cotton farm in North East of Brazil with other journalists from UK, France, and Brazil. It's in a small village called Apodi in Rio grande do Norte where is one of the poorest areas in the country. Actually, they didn't have electricity until 2004. Many people left there to look for more opportunities and went to big cities such as Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, and many times ended up in "favela", slams where have many social issues. Currently, there are many sustainable projects and NGOs to promote agriculture in the area to make people's life better. この7月、私はブラジル北東部の綿花農場を訪れました。イギリス、フランスそしてブラジルからのジャーナリストたちと共に向かったのはこの国で最も貧しいエリアにあるリオ・グランジ・ド・ノルテ州にあるアポジという村です。実際2004年までは電気も通っていなかった場所。多くの人々は村を捨て、サンパウロやリオ・デ・ジャネイロなどの都市部へ出稼ぎにいったものの、結局は“ファベーラ”と呼ばれるスラム街へいきつくというケースも少なくありません（ファベーラには薬物や売春といった問題も多いのです）。現在では、この地域に住む人々の生活を改善していくためのさまざまなサステナビリティのプロジェクトや世界各国が援助するNGOがスタートしています。

One of the projects is promoting organic cotton. In the 60's, cotton used to be growing a lot in this area, and considered as "white gold" to make lots of money. Larger scale of cotton farms in other areas such as the United States have taken over Brazilian cotton in the 80's, and their cotton business had been getting slower down. Now they're trying again with organic cotton which is more valuable in the market.　オーガニックコットンの栽培を促進するプロジェクトもそのひとつ。60年代、綿花は“白い金”とよばれるほど大きな収入源でした。その後、アメリカなどより大規模な農場が出現して、ブラジルの綿花栽培は80年代以降は下火になっていきました。そんな中、今、改めてより市場価値の高いオーガニックコットンを栽培しようという動きが高まっています。

We met Mario who is one of the challengers, and told us he is proud to be a farmer.　私たちが出会ったマリオさんもそのチャレンジャーのひとり。彼は自分がファーマーであることを誇りにしている、と語ってくれました。

There are 126 organic cotton farms in this area. このエリアには126のオーガニックコットン農場があります。

Another farmer, Alexandre has just got a new born girl in his family. He kindly invited all of us to his house to show his baby.　アレキサンドレさんの家族には最近可愛い赤ちゃんが産まれたばかり。「赤ちゃんを見せたい」というので私たち全員を彼の家に招いてくれました。彼もコットン農場で働くファーマーです。

About 260 families belong to a cooperative organization called Coopapi. They're making organic cotton, honey, cashew nuts etc. President, Fatima has such a great smile.　約260の農家が所属する農業組合「コパピ」ではオーガニックコットンのほか蜂蜜やカシューナッツなども作っています。代表のファティマさんは本当に素敵な笑顔の持ち主です。

It was a time for "Festas Juninas" which is a festival for farmers. This trip was very inspiring for me to see the really beginning of fashion industry because I was only seeing final collections on runways as a fashion journalist, or wearing some products as a customer. I was so happy to be there with farmers in Apodi to celebrate together. 　折しもファーマーのための祭り「フェスタス・ジュニーナス」の時期。ファッション業界において最も“川上”にある綿花農場への旅は私にとっては本当にインスパイアリングでした。というのもこれまでは“川下”のランウェイショーで完成されたコレクションを見るか、いち消費者として商品を着る、という経験しかしていなかったからです。アポジ村のファーマーたちと一緒にこのお祭をお祝いできたのはとても幸せなことでした。
