This is the new Reverso Squadra Chronograph GMT Palermo Open, which was originally announced at SIHH 2010, in January. Developed in association with Argentinian polo champion Adolfo Cambiaso, this new model is the first Reverso with a rubber-coated 50.5 x 34.9 mm case combined either with stainless steel or pink gold (limited series of 500 timepieces).

Powered by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 754 automatic movement (power reserve of 65 hours), the Reverso Squadra Chronograph GMT Palermo Open displays hours, minutes, seconds, large date, GMT (2nd time zone) and chronograph functions. Chronograph hours are displayed in the square subdial at 9 o'clock. Chronograph minutes are displayed at 3 o'clock. A 24-hour 2nd time zone is displayed in the subdial at 6 o'clock. Franck Muller Conquistador Grand Prix Tourbillon Watch

It is pretty wild, and sort of ridiculous at the same time. Franck Muller pushes itself into the realm of luxury sport watch aesthetics. In a way, it feels like what Audemars Piguet did with the Royal Oak Offshore, only here with Franck Muller. This is the tourbillon version of the watch, but there is also a (much less expensive) chronograph version. It comes in titanium and Egral or rose gold. Over $100k, and massive in size.

Franck Muller watches gained respect for being a bit odd. The archetype Franck Muller watch has a barrel shaped (tonneau) case, and squiggly numerals that look like something from a cartoon king’s business card. Elegant isn’t a term used to describe many of the brands timepieces, which is a positive thing when you are trying to get attention. Think classy extravagance, and you’ve come closer to what most Franck Muller customers are looking for.

The new Conquistador Grand Prix collection is part of Franck Muller’s eye on sports — specifically at the Formula One series in Singapore. Race fans tend to appreciate technology, and the wealthier among them enjoy complimenting that appreciation with technically interesting watches. Those looking for mechanical enjoyment and visual boldness won’t be able to resist a close look at these Conquistador Grand Prix timepieces. Franck Muller does an excellent job making a mechanical movement feel special. Gorgeous in design and finishing, the manually wound tourbillon movement in this specific model is all about being admired. The caseback of the watch is covered with a sapphire crystal for an additional view of the mechanics in action. Functions of the tourbillon model include just the time and subsidiary seconds (as displayed by the tourbillon carriage).

As I mentioned, the watch is quite massive. 48mm wide and almost 63mm tall make for a wrist dwarfing appearance that will only look appropriate on the burliest of forearms. Though the graceful curvature of the 18k rose gold and black titanium case makes it quite comfortable. Another version of the watch is available in black titanium and red colored Ergal (which is a type of aluminum alloy). The bezel style hearkens to diving watches, though does not rotate on this shaped case. Below that on the flange ring you’ll find compass indication points — another homage to activity watches, that here is more or less ‘vestigial.’ Franck Muller modifies its signature Arabic numerals a bit for these Conquistador watches making them sportier. The incredibly textured pattern on the dial is lovely, and helps keep the sport stay in the luxury domain. A unique feature for the watch is the “double crown.” The crown on the right of the watch is the functional crown used for adjusting and winding the movement, while the one of the left is cosmetic and used to balance out the look of the design — which it does remarkably well actually.

A unique child in the Franck Muller family, the Conquistador Grand Prix collection is a fascinating experiment in the brand’s future attention to sports. It holds true to the brand’s philosophy of unconventional luxury looks – here applied to the world of motor sports. Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Super Sport

Parmigiani Fleurier launched the car inspired Bugatti Super Sport timepiece. A super watch made in conjunction with the world's fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. The car is an amazing feat in engineering as is this new Bugatti timepiece from Parmigiani, this version has been fully redesigned. The new watch is arguably better looking, and maintains an unmistakable look, much like a Bugatti super car. The design is more restrained, the case is sleeker and it is much more wearable. The excellent design perfectly blends subtle Bugatti Veyron elements, without being quite as loud as the previous model, and that is definitely a good thing.

In 2004, Parmigiani revolutionised the world of watchmaking by placing the entire movement of its Bugatti Type 370 watch on a transverse axis, just like a car engine block. A pillar assembly connected the calibre's five plates and the train wheels cut in the shape of a car wheel.

In 2010, Parmigiani flips all the mechanical components of the new calibre Bugatti PF 372 onto a vertical axis, retaining the lateral time display so appreciated car drivers. *

In a world premiere, Parmigiani has successfully developed a 90° time setting system - the dial is positioned perpendicular to the display axis (hours/minutes) - by integrating a system of double pinions with bevel gearing. Like the complete movement, this unique and complex mechanical system, which allows the time to be displayed on the side, has been entirely designed and created in the workshops of the Fleurier manufacture (VMF).

Another key feature of the new Bugatti: its dynamometric crown. Perfectly integrated just above the profile, this is one of the essential technical components in terms of the harmony of the model's aerodynamic lines. To retract the winding stem from its housing and make it accessible for setting, a slight pressure is sufficient.

Its movement is the embodiment of Parmigiani Haute Horlogerie.

The manually wound Calibre Parmigiani 372 (power reserve of 10 days) was designed in two planes in order to match the contours of the new Bugatti watch. On the wrist, the watch movement is displayed at an angle of 30°. On the upside, the balance and escape wheel bridges form an arc reminiscent of the Bugatti oval. The screw balance, produced at atokalpa - the Parmigiani manufacture's bar turning facility - is perfectly visible, just like the central circular power reserve bridge with a 10-day graduated scale.

Striking aesthetic characteristics, the train wheels are once again cut in the form of car wheels, the plate and its 10 bridges, designed and decorated in line with Parmigiani's exclusive criteria, adopt the pillar system already used on the Calibre 370.A total of six sapphire crystals reveal the 337 impressive components of the new Bugatti Super Sport, which is water resistant to 10 metres.

The carbon fibre hour wheel can be seen through the dial's openworked centre, and is an homage to the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. The hands, applique indexes and counter are picked out in the same shade of orange used on the limited edition "world record" Veyron.

The highly tapered profile of the Bugatti Super Sport recalls the body of a wing, however the inspiration for the design lies in the iconic shape of the case lugs on a Parmigiani watch. Boasting the brand's characteristic curves the new Bugatti represents the decisive signature of the Parmigiani style. Highly ergonomic on the wrist, the Bugatti Super Sport offers even greater comfort thanks to the two removable lugs incorporated at the front of the watch. Of a complexity rare in watchmaking, the design of the new Bugatti's 18 ct white gold case - created by Les Artisans Boîtiers, the Parmigiani manufacture's case production facility - reproduces the taut lines of the Bugatti Veyron's wings. Brushed or polished, inclined planes and bevels are brought to life by contrasting light effects to reveal its generous volumes. The watch's aerodynamic curves, which are reminiscent of those on the 1200 bhp Bugatti Veyron, are matched with an integral Hermès strap specially created for the occasion.

IWC Adventure Ecology Edition Fetches €31K

IWC recently auctioned its unique platinum Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition “Adventure Ecology”. The sale raised €30,800, the entire proceeds of which is being donated to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation”.

Purchased by a buyer from the UK, the platinum timepiece is water-resistant to 12 bar, is housed in a case which features protective shoulders for the crown, and is powered by the IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre.

The stainless steel version of the timepiece was worn by crew members of the recently completed, IWC-sponsored Plastiki expedition. Led by David de Rothschild, they travelled from San Francisco to Sydney in a boat largely constructed from used water bottles to highlight the damage inflicted on our oceans by plastic waste.

As official sponsors of the charitable venture, IWC held the auction to pay tribute to its successful completion as well as to help continue its legacy. The money generated by the sale will be given to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation” (a UK-based organisation) who will channel it into an ongoing project called the "Plastiki Pod".

“As a CO2-neutral company, we are particularly pleased that the proceeds from the auction will be used to support inspiring ideas in the struggle against environmental pollution,” said IWC CEO Georges Kern. "It means that the basic idea behind the Plastiki expedition will live on.”

The bezel has become more pronounced thanks to more dynamic, deeper fluting. Bell & Ross BR01 Tourbillon Airborne Limited Edition Watch

If you didn't get enough of the Bell & Ross BR01 Airborne you'll love the new Tourbillon Airborne.The skull in square shape adopts the BNB Concept made (from back when it was around) tourbillon movement used first in the Bell & Ross BR01 Tourbillon. The movement has a regulator style of telling the time, tourbillon, power reserve indicator and torque indicator. Check out the carbon fiber plates in the movement as seen on the back of the watch. Weird? Sure it is, but an interesting novelty from Bell & Ross, and limited to just 20 pieces - with a cost of $150,000 a pop.

No doubt that Bell & Ross’s newest high-luxury watch is a bit creepy. In all black, with a prominent expressive skull, the timepiece is not for the light of heart. An item of art, and a conversation piece about the brand’s character, the watch is best served to argue against Bell & Ross’s seemingly conservative nature as a brand that only makes instrument style watches.

The BR01 Tourbillon Airborne is item borne of two inspirations. First is the BR01 Airborne watch, released not long ago, and meant as a tribute to the American Army’s airborne division of paratroopers. It shocked onlookers with its skull and crossbones style dial and sword hands as set in a BR01 case. Second is the BR01 Tourbillon watch, which is the source of the movement that the BR01 Tourbillon Airborne contains.

Watch lovers ‘in the know’ recall that Bell & Ross worked with now defunct high-end movement maker BNB Concept to conceive the interesting movement used in this watch. Bell & Ross seems to have had a few extra of these high-end movements available, and decided that BNB Concept would have likely wanted them used in new watches. This helps explain the highly limited number in this edition of just 20 pieces. The manually wound tourbillon movement is a more playful item than its appearance might have you believe. Functionally it has a tourbillon (which doubles as a subsidiary seconds dial), regulator style time display with a subsidiary hours indicator that uses the skull as a dial and the central hand for the minutes, a power reserve indicator (movement has a max of five days of power reserve), and a “trust” indicator. The latter indicator actually being a torque indicator, which assists the wearer know when the movement is most accurate based upon the tautness of the mainspring that powers the mechanical watch. As a spring gets wound tighter, or is almost totally unwound, it releases a level of power much different from its middle range. Thus, by looking at the Trust index, and keeping mainspring barrel in a moderately wound state, you can keep the watch at its most accurate. Just one of the interesting features BNB Concept movements were known for.

Done in all black, the watch is in a 46mm wide titanium case that has been diamond like carbon (DLC) coated. It is 100 meters water resistant and has a sapphire crystal over the dial as well as the caseback (for a view to the movement plate). Bell & Ross matches the Tourbillon Airborne with a black galuchat (stingray) strap, as it has done in the past with black diamond decorated versions of the BR01 Airborne watch that I mentioned above. A unique treat, the watch is a good reminder for Bell & Ross owners all over the world of the designs the French brand is willing to play with. And for 20 special people, the watch will do double duty to amuse adults, and scare small children. Priced at $150,000 each.

Zenith Elite Captain Watch

Zenith calls the watch the "Elite Captain," which sounds just as cheesy. The "Elite" part of the name comes from the collection - which is a mid range of models from the 'reinvented' luxury brand. I believe that most Elite watches have in-house made Zenith movements. At least the Elite Captain does. Zenith has been offering watches with in-house made calibers at prices that are comparatively very reasonable - starting in the $5k - $6k range I believe. Not sure about the price of the Elite Captain, but with its relatively simple three-hand date automatic Caliber Elite 670 movement, it shouldn't be too much.

In steel or gold, the Elite captain comes in a few versions. Each in a 40mm wide case with various dial colors. The model here with its swanky looking metal bracelet and sharp dial is my favorite. It is a very handsome watch in a classic sense, quite the direction that Zenith is trying to take. Enough watches like this and they just may succeed. Looking at it again, it is starting to feel like a solid alternative to a basic Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. What do you think? Look for the new Elite Captain watch soon.

Greubel Forsey Edition Historique

It was with somewhat mixed emotions earlier this month that we learnt of the decision by master craftsmen Greubel Forsey to end the production of their breathtaking Double Tourbillon 30° Contemporaine models (which includes Vision and Secret models.) We say mixed emotions because on the one hand it is always a little sad to farewell such an iconic timepiece, however, at the same time one can’t help but be excited by the prospect of what amazing new invention will be unveiled to fill its place.

A Momentous Occasion

If you’re not familiar with the brand then you may not fully appreciate the significance of this decision to the company and its founders, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey. The fact is though that this particular line forms a major cornerstone of the brand’s history as it is the timepiece which catapulted Greubel Forsey into the spotlight when it was first launched back in 2004. The complexity, and ensuing success of this timepiece, formed the basis for the legitimacy of the inventions that followed.

However, Greubel Forsey is an inventor and an innovator first and foremost and as such the focus of their energy and investment dollars must always be on the future. Hence, whilst the decision has not been made lightly, it has most certainly been made for the right reasons and aficionados of the brand will most certainly reap the benefits of this shift in direction.

Before the brand boldly sets off to explore uncharted new territory, however, it is only fitting that this iconic collection is given a suitable send off. And so, to celebrate the end of the fairytale story of the Double Tourbillon 30° Contemporaine, the company has created two unique series, the “Edition Historique”:

The beauty of every Greubel Forsey timepiece is that the complexity is not just limited to the mechanics, although the inner-workings of the double tourbillon system are in themselves mindblowing. Victorinox Swiss Army Infantry Vintage Chrono

Victorinox Swiss Army has just announced plans to release three new mechanical chronographs for winter 2010, called Infantry Vintage Mechanical Chronos. All three versions are powered by the robust and accurate mechanical self-winding Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement, and all share the same 44 mm stainless 316L stainless steel case, however, the black version features a Black Ice® PVD coated stainless steel 316L case (additional $200 for PVD treated version).

Available in three striking styles: the "retro" dial in olive and cream with a rugged-stitched brown leather strap; a very contemporary black-and-silver dial model with subtle red and black accents and rugged-stitched black leather strap; and the striking Black Ice PVD coating on the dial, case and deployant clasp bracelet.

The sapphire crystal has a triple-caoted anti-reflective sapphire crystal protecting the dial. And a screw-in exhibition caseback with a shock-resistant mineral crystal on the movement side. The crown is screw-down and is protected against accidental turning. Water-resistance is 100 meters (10 ATM, 330 ft).

Watch functions include: a chronograph with1/4th of a second precision timing, a central 60-second counter, a 30-minute and 12-hour counters, a date calendar at 6 o'clock, a small seconds display at 9 o'clock and a telemeter scale on the flange.

Victorinox Siwss Army has come out with some very interesting timepieces within the past 12-months. I especially like what they have done with the new Infantry Vintage collection , the new Maverick collection here and the new Dive Master collection. The newest Victorinox timepieces, offer a quality to price ratio, that just didn't appear to be there, even two years ago. The new Infantry Vintage collection is a great addition to the previously announced 2010 Dive Master and Maverick collections.

Victorinox Swiss Army - Maverick GS

Originally introduced in 2004, the Maverick sports watch from Swiss Army have become an iconic line with the brand. For 2010, Swiss Army has fully redesigned the collection. The new Maverick GS "Grand Sport" timepieces are powered by Swiss made quartz movements, and come in three different versions: chronograph, dual time (GMT), and three-hand. The chronograph and dual time versions are (pictured above).

The three-hand version displays hours, minutes, seconds and the date (not pictured).

The chronograph features a stopwatch function, hour, minutes and small seconds, as well as a date at 6 o'clock. The chronograph is accurate to 1/10th of a second. (pictured with red bezel).

The dual time features a second time zone sub-dial at 6 o'clock. The dial allows hours and minutes to displayed at a glance, for two timezones. Hour and minutes are individually displayed by the central hands (main timekeeping) and by the sub-dial (2nd timezone). The seconds are displayed on the central seconds hand and are shared by both the timezones. The date is displayed in an oversized aperture at 12 o'clock (pictured with black bezel).

The new case is 43 mm in diameter and is made of 316L surgical stainless steel. The shape of the case is smoother than previous models. The new integrated stainless steel bracelet or genuine rubber strap also help smooth out the watch, further adding to its comfort.

A new, more vivid and scratch-resistant polished lacquer is now applied on the bezel, available in red or black. The dial design has been enriched with more depth and details and it has been redesigned for enhanced legibility with unified chronograph hand colors on the Chrono model.

The chrono is powered by a Swiss-made quartz chronograph
movement (ETA 251.272) and the dual time model is powered by a Swiss-made quartz movement (Ronda 6203.B).

The bezels are unidirectional rotating with a 60 minute count-up scale. Casebacks are solid steel and screw-in. The crown is screw-down and water resistance is (100 meters/ 330 ft).

Since 1962, when the first Biennale or Antiques Fair was held in Paris, the Grand Palais has regularly welcomed (once very two years, as its French name implies) one of the finest international art events. Pierre Vandermersh, President of the National Union of Antique Dealers, first had the idea of this Antiques Fair in the late 1950s. The support of André Malraux, the iconic Minister for Cultural Affairs under General de Gaulle, enabled him to bring his project to fruition.

Inaugurated in 1900 at the World Fair, the Grand Palais is undoubtedly one of the world’s most prestigious exhibition centres. The restoration work undertaken between 2001 and 2007 now enables the Biennale to spread over a full 13,500 square metres within this exceptional Palace of Fine Arts.

The Piaget booth is located right in the middle of the Allée des Joailliers (Jewellers’ Avenue), at the centre of the Grand Palais beneath the 45 metre-high glass dome.

A last fitting session before the presentation of the collection! Checking the drape of a material, a bow, a net motif, tightening the lacing of a corset. In this particular case, it’s a question of lace and ribbons made from gold, diamonds and other precious stones. Diamond, rings, bracelets and watches are inspired by delicate net patterns, light embroideries, dancing fringes. Thousands of hours of work are laid out before our admiring gaze. The Maison Piaget is presenting 60 Haute Joaillerie models inspired by the world of Haute Couture. These two prestigious fields share a number of common denominators including the same pursuit of aesthetic sophistication, quality craftsmanship, sensuality and luxury, as well as creativity, extravagance and femininity.

A couture workshop was the natural choice to set the scene for the booth. Against a mainly blue monochrome backdrop, the sketches on the wall are a final reminder of a fashion runway show schedule. Inside the showcases, the gems sparkle amid the threads, swathes of silk, exquisite lacework and sewing needles. Before the fittings, the jewellery models are presented on Stockman mannequins bearing the name of Piaget. Rows of diamonds twine like the straps of a corset around a watch or a necklace. Hundreds of brilliants sparkle in a fascinating net motif on a bracelet or a ruff. Diamond ribbons are tied on a sautoir necklace. Pear-cut diamonds are “embroidered” on a diamond choker.

A gourmet nod to the preview evening

The preview evening of the Biennale des Antiquaires is one of the most elegant events on the international social calendar. The greatest art and jewellery dealers welcome collectors who flock from around the world to view, to admire and to purchase the rarest objects. This is when the most important transactions are made – in a festive atmosphere, and far from prying eyes and ears.

At Piaget, the preview takes place every day. But the cocktails and delicious nibbles will be composed of the most precious ingredients. In a showcase on the right-hand side of the booth, diamonds and colourful gemstones will be set on an astonishing series of jewellery creations. On the cocktail-inspired Limelight rings, the sugar crystals of a Sex on The Beach are transformed into diamonds, while the Piaget-style Mojito reflects the minty green shade of an almost 24-carat green tourmaline surrounded by 120 emeralds and a lemon-slice shaped citrine.

New rings inspired by delectable cakes and representing irresistible temptations will make their first public debut. These tiny colourful diamond-set éclairs and cream puffs once again highlight the amazing jewellerymaking creativity displayed by the Maison Piaget.

A second showcase will feature some of the most extraordinary complicated men’s watches born in the workshops of the Geneva-based Manufacture, thus providing a perfect expression of the twin fields of expertise so brilliantly mastered by Piaget, Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie.

Because of its activity in the field of Haute Joaillerie, Piaget finds a natural place within this context. We are taking part for the very first time and with our own weapons, meaning talent, inventiveness, the extreme care devoted to crafting our jewellery, and the know-how of our artisans. A triple-axis tourbillon is extremely rare; a triple-axis tourbillon wristwatch even more so. However, Thomas Prescher's triple-axis flying tourbillon is not simply extremely rare – it is absolutely unique.

Prescher's Triple Axis Tourbillon Regulator features one of the world's most exclusive and most difficult complications to assemble, set to stunning advantage in a jet-black natural onyx dial that contrasts beautifully with the pink-gold case. Regulator-style hours and seconds are each indicated in their own separate sub-dial, while the constantly animated tourbillon tracks the minutes during its one-hour rotation.

Thomas Prescher has both an affinity and a talent for complicated tourbillons: while his classmates were submitting simple movements for their watch at the end of apprenticeship school, Prescher presented a half-flying tourbillon that confirmed his position as the top of the form. In 2003 he presented the world's first pocket watch with a flying double-axis tourbillon. On seeing Prescher's pocket watch, one of his colleagues mentioned that he thought a double-axis tourbillon was impossible in the constrained space of a wristwatch. Prescher not only met but surpassed the challenge a year later with a wristwatch trilogy of single-axis, double-axis and triple-axis tourbillons.

At this extreme level of micro-mechanical sophistication and miniaturisation, watchmaking ceases to be about timekeeping and becomes pure art. Or perhaps that should read "arts", because we have both the sublime static beauty of a fine painting in the harmonious forms and colours, as well as the graceful movements of the ballerina in the whorled path traced by the mesmerizing triple-axis tourbillon dancing apparently weightlessly in space.

Why a flying tourbillon?

A normal tourbillon is supported by bridges top and bottom that obstruct a clear view into the tourbillon. Although much more difficult to achieve, Thomas Prescher chose to make his triple-axis tourbillon fully flying, i.e. supported by just one side so that very little impedes visual access to the kinetic ballet of the triple-axis tourbillon.

Further ensuring that absolutely nothing diminishes the pleasure of enjoying the tourbillon in all its beauty, the complex and intricate triple-axis tourbillon mechanism is driven via two conical gears instead of the easier gear-to-gear solution. Thomas Prescher was the first, and is still the only watchmaker to use this system.

The difficulty in supporting anything by just one end is balance. When an object is supported on two sides its equilibrium is not as critical as if it is supported on only one. However, imagine balancing an object moving through not one, not two, but three different planes!

Constant-force mechanism

While the triple-axis tourbillon mechanism, which includes the escapement wheel, pallets, anchor, balance spring and balance wheel, is extremely light in weight – the smallest screw is less than 1/1000th of a gram – it is actually heavy in relation to the amount of energy available. One of the major issues regarding multi-axis tourbillons is ensuring an ample supply of power to the escapement, the mechanism that regulates timekeeping.

To resolve this problem, Prescher has added a constant-force device inside the tourbillon cage turning around the first axis. This device transmits energy directly to the escapement six times per second, i.e. with every beat of the oscillating balance. The main power train drives the tourbillon and recharges the constant-force spring so that it always has sufficient power on tap for the escapement. The "Jeanneret" constant-force system used requires no energy-sapping levers, but works efficiently using the different inertias of the escapement wheel and tourbillon carriage.

Biography: Thomas Prescher

Thomas Prescher’s passion for horology was born of a childhood obsession with collecting crystals and minerals. As a teenager on a visit to a local jewellery shop, his eye drifted to the watchmaker working at his bench and he was smitten. He began working part-time at the store and became familiar with the mechanics of watches and clocks. However, at 19 he joined the German navy, leaving six years later as a Captain.

After the navy, Prescher decided to study watchmaking and he won the single apprenticeship position offered yearly by IWC. The watch he crafted at the end of his four-year apprenticeship – which he completed in three years – was a rare, half-flying tourbillon and he came top of his class.

Prescher then moved to Audemars Piguet in Frankfurt, where he also obtained his Master Watchmaker certificate. Then it was back to Switzerland to work in the restoration department of Gübelin where he had the opportunity to restore some of the world’s most iconic and complicated timepieces and to create bespoke watches for special clients.

Four years at Gübelin was followed by a brief spell at Progress Watch, then a position as Production Manager for Blancpain. In 2002 Prescher opened his own restoration atelier, making time to craft a watch of his own that became the world’s first double-axis tourbillon with constant-force device. This earned him his place as a candidate of the AHCI in 2003.

In 2004, Prescher stunned the horological world with the presentation of his incredible wristwatch trilogy comprising single-axis, double-axis and triple-axis tourbillons - all flying tourbillons with constant-force mechanisms. Alongside his tourbillon models, Prescher is also well known for his distinctive Tempusvivendi line in which the time is displayed by figures at the push of a button. His new Sculptura Una collection functions in the same way, but with conventional hands. In 2009, Prescher surprised again with a completely new development: an instant perpetual calendar with coaxial indications for optimal legibility.

IWC Big Pilot Watch In Blue

This is a special limited edition version of the IWC Big Pilot watch that will exclusively be available in IWC's North American boutique stores. There are still very few details about the watch, such as the price or the amount in the limited edition. What I can say is that IWC is a nice job "re-imagining" the dial in a sober sky blue splendor. There is also matching blue stitching on the alligator pilot style strap. The case is in all steel, and 46.2mm wide. It is everything you know and love about the Big Pilot complete with turnip style crown.

The blue dial uses blue for most all the markers and hands. The designers did something that I like a lot, which is do the Arabic hour numerals in outlined blue mixed with the solid blue hour and minute markers. This is a difference between this style and the standard Big Pilot watch collection. The white on black date disc isn't in blue, but frankly I don't think it needs to be. IWC watches are often found in limited edition variants, but this one is a special breed being a regional limited edition - not necessarily for a specific event or cause.

Movement inside the watch is the famous IWC in-house made caliber 51111 automatic movement with a 7 day power reserve - that is about 168 hours. The dial comes complete with the time, power reserve indicator and the date. It is one of the most recognizable watches in the luxury watch world, and probably the first watch people think of when it comes to solid quality luxury brand pilot watches. While I don't know the specific price of the watch, I have a feeling it isn't going to be very cheap, the standard model in steel is around $10,000. I hope they make at least 500 or so of them, because this is really a stunning watch in blue. Look for it soon, at IWC boutique stores located in North America.

Hollywood’s hottest star, Taylor Lautner, proved he is also one of the most stylish, as he arrived at the “Eclipse” premiere in New York wearing a pale grey suit and dark shirt accented with Piaget’s Altiplano 40mm in white gold with a black dial. Looking every bit the leading man, Lautner waved to the hundreds of fans who had gathered outside the Crosby Hotel to catch a glimpse of the movie star before joining co-star Kristen Stewart on the red carpet where the two posed for photographers. The Piaget-sponsored premiere of the summer’s most highly anticipated film drew a number of celebrities and high profile New Yorkers, including Abigail Breslin, Cheyenne Jackson, Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, stylist Rachel Zoe, models Hilary Rhoda, Carol Alt and Dree Hemingway, Kelly Kilorean Bensimon, Lauren Bush and designers Rachel Roy, Cynthia Rowley and Georgina Chapman. Also in attendance was Nic Roldan, Piaget’s polo ambassador who was in town for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic where he captained Prince Harry’s team. Roldan wore the special limited edition version of the Piaget Polo FortyFive that Piaget created for the event.

Invicta Pro Diver Wood Chronograph Watch

Some watches are all wood, while others use the material for the dial, or other elements of the watch. Invicta has taken wood and used it in their Pro Diver watch, for the "Pro Diver Wood" watch. You can see that wood is used as the center link in the bracelet, as well as for the dial.

The wood used is actually teak - a popular wood when it comes to water resistance. Well, I have feeling it is highly treated though. The links in the bracelet are capped in steel to reduce wear. While the dial isn't the epitome of clarity, it is considered "unbusy" by Invicta standards. In all steel, the case is 48mm wide, and actually have a really attractive looking rotating diver's bezel.

Going back to the bracelet, you'll notice the use of what looks like tons of screws to hold it together. Feels like Invicta wanted to make a statement on how "this bracelet does not use pins!" Most of the Pro Diver watches have the diver's helmet logo, which is found on the end-links of the bracelet, as well as on the caseback of the watch. At 200 meters water resistant, the watch is suitable for enough diving duty. Invicta uses a lume called "Tritnite," which is probably not as good as SuperLumiNova, but should do the trick. There is enough lume on the dial for it to work out well for night viewing.

The watch uses a sapphire coated mineral crystal that Invicta calls "flame fusion." This is like a middle ground between fully sapphire crystals and mineral ones. I don't know too much about living with them, but I at least wanted you to know what flame fusion was. Inside the watch is a Swiss Ronda 5040.D quartz chronograph movement. Really not much more I can say about that.

If you are into wood, they you might just be into this watch. I think it is pretty swanky over all and would certainly sport it whenever wood is appropriate.

TAG Heuer and the Porsche Club of America

TAG Heuer celebrates 55 years of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) by manufacturing a 55-piece limited edition for the largest single-brand club in the world. It is no coincidence that the PCA has chosen TAG Heuer as its partner for the limited edition watch, which is based on famous racing heritage.

In preparing to shoot Le Mans, US actor Steve McQueen’s main source of inspiration was his friend Jo Siffert, the Swiss racecar legend who in 1969 became the first driver ever sponsored by a watch brand: Heuer (TAG, standing for Techniques d’Avantgarde, was added in 1985 as the result of a takeover). McQueen insisted on wearing Heuer’s Monaco in the film, which had just been launched. Perhaps it was McQueen’s influence, or perhaps it was Porsche driver Siffert’s, but the Monaco seemed to become the preferred chronograph of the racing and fashion worlds in the 1970s. This watch, whose unique and uncompromising geometry helped achieve its almost legendary status, is one of the most recognizable timepieces in the world.

Bvlgari Diagono Chronograph GMT X-Pro

I have never seen anyone wearing a Bvlgari wristwatch (other than maybe Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man). Bvlgari has a large multi-level boutique in Manhattan (Bvlgari also sell is jewelry), and many other throughout the world, just like Audemars Piguet or Omega, for example. Yet I have seen many people wearing Omega and Audemars Piguet timepieces, never a Bvlgari though. I'm not sure how much traction the brand has in the highly competitive luxury watch market, but based on what I've heard, and Bvlgari's January 2010 announcement to combined their two haute horology brands, Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta under the Bvlgari name, there is clearly some turmoil within their watch division.

That said, this new sports watch is the best watch I have seen from Bvlgari to date. It is not powered by their new in-house movement (which they finally brought to market this year, after 10 years of development). Instead, the new Diagono Professional Chronograph GMT X-Pro is powered by a less exclusive, but reliable Valjoux 7750 automatic mechanical chronograph movement, with an add-on GMT module.

So, the watch looks good, somewhat like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas even, but in order to sell it they will need more than just looks and the Bvlgari name. If they price it correctly, then it might takeoff, but if they price it at $7,000 or above, then it will just be another overpriced Valjoux 7750 timepiece. It should be available in stores soon.
