FEATURE FILM SYNOPSIS

Columbia Ave. is a story about loyalty, family and about second chances. Columbia Ave is also a neighborhood street that separates the good part of town and the bad part. It’s the story of Tommy Cialini and his adopted family, the Monaghan’s. Danny Monaghan is a rambunctious charmer and has been friends with Tommy since grade school. The eldest, Frank, is the charismatic leader of the pack. He’s also a highly organized smuggler of guns, drugs and people along the Texas/Mexico border.

Tommy was adopted into this family after his mother’s untimely and suspicious death when he was only 8 years old. His father had been neglecting Tommy which led directly to his adoption by the Monaghan’s. The Monaghan’s provided Tommy and the rest of the children with everything. They got a traditional education and a street education. The latter was provided by Frank. Now adults, Tommy and Danny became professional musicians. Frank purchased a nightclub for them to operate and use as their home base for playing music while Frank continues his highly lucrative business along the border. However, after some recent shady activity along the border, Frank must take a meeting in Mexico to investigate -- a risky move for someone of Frank’s profile. At the meeting, a supposed ally takes his shot at Frank and things get ugly. Frank is injured and must rush to get across the border and he is caught crossing back into the U.S. with some contraband in the truck he was in. The charges are steep, Frank faces a whole lot of time. Before his sentencing date even nears, Frank arranges to go underground. Sam Levitt, the family lawyer arranges the whole thing and now, Danny and Tommy feeling intense loyalty for Frank apply their limited criminal skills to raise some money to help Frank stay out of sight until they can get him out of the country…for good. They do this by stealing cars and selling them across the border in Mexico mainly, as well as a few other activities that put them in over their heads.

Frank’s nemesis, I.C.E agent Carl Horton. Horton has been after Frank for a long time and considers it a slap in the face that Frank has skipped out. So, he squeezes the younger brothers. Amidst all this, Tommy’s ex-girlfriend, Charlie, moves back to town and things get complicated. Tommy’s previous criminal activities with Frank and Danny were at odds with Charlie’s sensibilities and a painful break-up ensued, causing her to leave to New York, and after a few years returns to town to find that her connection to Tommy is still very much alive. Tommy has indeed matured, but the situation with Frank arises and it puts Tommy back into a situation that Charlie finds all too familiar. Tommy struggles in the face of a second chance with Charlie and helping Frank at his own version of a second chance.

The boys get as organized as they can but their efforts are not enough to make any real money. A man from Tommy’s past, Ray Zimmer, Tommy’s father’s friend and uncle figure to Tommy has his own interest in the goings-on along the border and with his deep pockets, he reaches out to Sam with a proposition to help Frank get out of the country with some real money. Zimmer is not welcome by Tommy’s family, though Tommy loves his Uncle Ray and has never understood the contentious non-relationship between Zimmer and his adoptive family. The border becomes more and more volatile in Frank’s absence. People die, money is lost and threats are made on Tommy and Danny’s business and family. Things are getting hotter for the boys and Zimmer’s offer becomes the only viable one. Meanwhile, Horton tightens his grip on Tommy and it is evident that they must take Zimmer’s deal. Danny refuses and during an argument between Danny and Tommy about this deal, Danny reveals a secret out of frustration – he tells Tommy that his mother did not die of a heart attack at all. The truth about his mother’s death brings with it difficult and unsettling revelations. Tommy, now faced with this new information, must make a difficult decision that will splinter his loyalty to the memory of his dead mother and his loyalty to Frank.

Lease terms: Standard lease terms are from 6 to 12 months. Month to month or short terms rentals are available at a few select communities. Additionally, nine and three month (summer only) terms are available for students in the campus area.

Application fee: This is a non-refundable fee which most properties charge to cover the cost of a credit check and verification of the application. The average fee is $35.

Security deposit: This deposit is refundable, upon completion of the lease term, depending on the condition of the apartment. Security deposits range from $200 up to an amount equal to one month's rent for campus area condos.

Pets: Many communities will accept a pet under 20 pounds with a deposit of $250 and up. Larger pets are often harder to place, but not impossible.

Utilities: Only a few communities include electricity in the monthly rent. Most pay for trash collection. If gas is available, it is usually paid by the management. Residents are responsible for phone, cable TV, and water (in most cases).

Furnished apartments: Almost all furnished apartments are designed for students and are located in the UT campus area. If you need furniture, we can arrange a complete furniture package through Cort Furniture Rental. And as one of our clients, you will receive a special discount.

Availability: Apartment communities work on a 30 day notice basis. Ideally, you should contact us between 30 and 45 days before move-in. Student housing is the exception to this rule. We begin student pre-leasing for June or August occupancy on or about January 15th.

Rental Rates: Rates vary widely and are affected by the age and location of the property. Additionally, amenities such as controlled access gates, alarm systems, washer/dryer connections, washer/dryer in unit, covered parking or garages will affect the rate.

High-speed Internet access: Almost all aparments are capable of high speed Internet access. Your local phone or cable company can assist you with Internet services.

Handball is a cross between many sports like basketball, soccer and water polo. It's not basketball, even though you dribble, and it isn't soccer, even though there's a goalie. So what is handball? "It's very similar to water polo. They have pretty much the same idea, but it's not in the pool," Austin RockStars coach Tiago Saramento said. Handball packs the intensity of all those sports into one. "It's an addictive game," Saramento said. "It's so competitive, it's energetic, it's a fast game." Teammates agree. "It's full contact pretty much -- a lot of fast action, fast paced, and you can really test yourself. You can test yourself athletically," goalie Antonio Fuentez III said. WATCH THE VIDEO Handball News 8’s Heidi Zhou shows viewers why handball participants are passionate about their sport. Tools of the Trade Zhou speaks to Dede Pinkova of the Texas Team Handball Club. Saramento said it's a game about unity. "You have to be united," he said. "It's a friendship game." But beyond that, the players are ready to take handball to another level. The U.S. has yet to send a team to the Olympics, but perhaps not for long. "Outside the U.S., people think Americans can't really play this sport, that we don't have the ability to compete because we don't have the history. I think it's time to change that image," Fuentez said. With the ultimate goal in sight, the athletes keep shooting away at that dream. Handball is accessible to people of all skill levels and experience. The Austin RockStars are looking for more players.
