The 28th edition of Africa Cup of Nations nears its culmination as Ivory Coast and Zambia set to lock horns for the elusive trophy. While the Didier Drogba led side were always one of the favorites to claim the title, Zambia’s rise to the ultimate stage is anything but unsurprising. Apart from being held in a hard fought draw against Libya during the group stages, Zambia have managed to win each of their games in the tournament, while Ivory Coast have undoubtedly established their supremacy over all the other teams winning all their games, comprehensively so.
Zambia showed an unimpressive Ghana the exit door from the semi-finals while Ivory Coast beat Mali to block the second spot in the finals. Zambia are more than likely to sneak in a surprise despite their opposition clearly starting as favorites on the strength of their reputation. - (Zambia) Probable Starting Lineup: Kennedy Mweene, Davies Nkausu, Joseph Musonda, Hichani Himoonde, Stopilla Sunzu, Nathan Sinkala, Chisamba Lungu, Isaac Chansa, Rainford Kalaba, Chris Katongo, Emmanuel Mayuka
- (Ivory Coast) Probable Starting Lineup: Boubacar Barry, Kolo Toure, Arthur Boka, Sol Bamba, Jean-Jacques Gosso, Didier Zokora, Yaya Toure, Cheik Tiote, Salomon Kalou, Didier Drogba, Gervinho
TheHardTackle’s PLAYER(s) TO WATCH OUT FOR
Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)
Both are household names in European football and have enjoyed star status in Europe for some years now. Their presence in the team is one of the major factors for The Elephants being considered the title favorites from the very beginning. This is their time to step up and bring back the title to a country waiting for 20 long years.
Chris Katongo, Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)
Leading the scoring charts for the Copper Bullets, the two must step up to the demands of this night and reassure the fans and skeptics that their presence at this stage is no fluke. Against the more experienced counterparts wearing the orange kits, it will be the ultimate test of character for the entire Zambian unit. These two pioneers of their campaign thus far, must manufacture a miracle.
TheHardTackle’s PREDICTION
Zambia 0-2 Ivory Coast
Despite the Zambians surprising one and all so far with their incredible run to the finals, the quality and experience among the Ivory Coast ranks, might be a little too much for the underdogs to handle. Didier Drogba and Gervinho are the most likely ones to find the net and put speculations of an upset to rest.

He could have been building his dream wrongly by basing it on basketball; maybe all he needed to do was just try out football or even athletics. Lowering the stakes is not a solution; it is another route to your desired reality. Be sure it is the right route or you still won't get the result you so much desired. I think the story of Paula Jane Radcliffe has a lot to say about this- the British long distance runner who is the current world record holder for the women's marathon; which she set during the 2003 London marathon with a time of 2:15.25 - this mark is currently the highest scoring performance ever, in terms of IAAF world ranking points. She's been quoted on her website replying her critics as thus; 'Every time i've dreamed of winning this title, it's been with a sprint finish because people keep telling me I haven't got one.' The game kicks off at 21h00. Both sides were defeated by scores of 1-0 in their semifinals. Ghana were humbled by the Zambians while Mali were beaten by the Ivory Coast. The Black Stars who were finalists in 2010 and quarter finalists at the FIFA World Cup two years ago were co-tournament favourites along with Ivory Coast, but have once again choked at a major international event. Ghana captain John Mensah who has failed to finish all the matches that he has started in the tournament due to suspension and injuries has described the mood in the Black Stars camp as that of grief and sadness.
They have now failed in their latest attempt to end a 30-year wait for a Nations Cup trophy.
"It's tough to think of playing for third place, first we have to digest this game,”Mensah said.
"We all wanted to make it tothe final and win the title.
"Everyone is very sad, but I have to pick the players up and prepare for Saturday."
Despite being narrowly beaten 1-0 by the Ivorians, Mali say that they are proud of their achievements of reaching the final four of the competition.
"It's very good for Mali to be here, because Mali players are not big names,” said Mali defender Ousmane Berthe.
"Ivory Coast has big [name] players, but Mali's players are young and played very well [against the Ivorians]."
The Malian Eagles who have reached the last four beyond expectation without previous stalwarts like Fredrik Kanoute, Mamadou Diarra and Mamadou Sissoko, are certainly hoping to prey on the wounded Ghanaians.
Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan will be hoping to prove his detractors wrong in this match after missing a penalty in the semi-final and his captain was full of encouraging words for him.
“We just keep on encouraging him. “ Mensah said.
"I told him to concentrate on our next match [Saturday's third place play-off with Mali in Malabo]."

By Simon Baker
Oxford has stolen a march on the rest of the sector by exposing its graduate destinations to detailed scrutiny - exploding a few myths in the process. Simon Baker investigates
While arguments have raged about the hike in tuition fees, with thousands taking to the streets to protest, another key element of the coalition government's higher education reforms will be easier for students toswallow: the promise to "radically improve" information on university courses.
By this autumn, every university in England will have published a new set of information about every undergraduate course on offer. These Key Information Sets will include data on areas such as contact hours, graduate salaries and student satisfaction.
But with little fanfare, one institution has already put itself ahead of the game by displaying information about its graduates in a way that could set a benchmark for the sector.
The University of Oxford has created an online tool for comparing data about its graduates' careers and salaries. Tucked away on its main careers website and organised into a set of user-friendly tables , it allows immediate comparisons of the salary and employment status of its alumni from 2008-09 and 2009-10 - undergraduate and postgraduate - sorted by subject area, individual course and even constituent college.
A single click of a mouse produces striking information, including a league table of salaries by college, graphics showing the impact that subject choice might have on employment prospects, and even data that indicate how quickly graduates of particular courses might start to pay off their student loans.
The data are drawn from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey, the national poll of graduates collated annually by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which asks graduates about their occupation six months after university.
Exposing its DLHE data in such detail sets Oxford apart from most of the rest of the academy, but for Jonathan Black, director of the institution's careers service, it is the natural path to take.
The exposure has exploded a few myths about Oxbridge graduates, too, he adds.
"Without being prescriptive, directed or forming a contract, it is saying we are really open about where our students go," says Black."We have nothing to hide - and in fact we would quite like to engage people and say: 'Well, why aren't (some of these graduates) getting employed?'"
Black argues that the move allows Oxford to give its students well-directed careers advice while helping prospective applicants with little experience of higher education to make informed choices about what to study.
"You meet lots of old members of Oxford as well as current and prospective students who say: 'Oh, but everyone goes into the City',or 'Everyone becomes a high court judge.' And you say, well, that's not really true, actually."
Black points out that the single biggest employment destination for Oxford graduates is education -"which makes people sit up a bit".
Although the development of the online tool aligns Oxford with the coalition's desire to improve the quantity and quality of student information, Black notes that this was not part of the institution's motivation.
"I think we have been ahead of what the government has wanted but in line with it," he says of the website resource, which the university began work on two years ago.
"We agree that there should be more transparency, but I'm not sure about some elements of the KIS - partly because people need to read it with a health warning."
He believes that Oxford's model gives students a more accurate picture than the data provided by the KIS. The difference is that the ancient university's approach facilitates detailed, easily viewed comparisons between courses, subjects and colleges, whereas the KIS is a fixed template that will display an isolated set of data on a particular course.
Steve Edwards, founder of BestCourse4me.com, an independent website that already uses DLHE data to help students choose what to study, finds Oxford's approach refreshing. He says that many universities have been resistant to the idea of presenting detailed data on the employment patterns of their graduates.
However, he believes that the KIS is still important, as it will provide students with an official, standard source of information that cannot be manipulated by universities keen to market the data in their own way.
"I have absolutely no problem with this sort of thing, as long as it is transparent and accurate and not manipulated in anyway that is going to mislead the naive observer," Edwards says.
Oxford appears to have taken a transparent approach, he thinks.
"But I think it is very important that there is a consistent set of measures available centrally that allows people to compare universities, rather than it simply becoming a set of individual marketing exercises for particular institutions," Edwards adds.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4547874416358080698-2183103643535463319?l=segeluade.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/xulaz/~4/gzS_dMCHYHA" height="1" width="1"/>

Researchers discover that hospital Clostridium Difficile infection have not spread to other patients.

Health | Science 08 Feb 12
The study examined 1300 cases of Clostridium difficile infection.
Source: Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust
The vast majority of C. difficile cases in hospital are isolated cases and have not been spread from other patients, researchers in Oxford and Leeds have found.
This counters the widely held belief that most C. difficile infections are spreadin hospital from patient to patient.
The researchers, part of University-NHS partnerships in Oxford and Leeds and funded by the National Institute of Health Research, published their results in the journal PLoS Medicine .
Professor Tim Peto of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford said: 'We studied 1300 cases of C. difficile infection from patients in hospitals, the community and other healthcare settings, and found that the vast majorityof cases of C. difficile we analysed were unlinked. This means that most of the cases we diagnose are not passed from other known cases of C. difficile infection.
'It is likely that the robust infection control measures taken in hospitals to safeguard against cross infection of C. difficile have already had a huge impact and that these should continue. What we need to do now though is take this understanding of the pattern of outbreaks to do more research and find out how we can reduce the number of C. difficile outbreaks even further.'
C. difficile infection can be aserious illness, causing severe diarrhoea and, in the most serious cases, death. Although it has become a significant medical and resource problem in hospitals, nursing homes and in the community, the number of cases has been reducing over recent years. This may be due in part to the success of infection control techniques but the source of cases is most often unknown.
The researchers in Oxford and Leeds investigated how often cases occurring in hospital can be linked to other known cases by analysing a section of C. difficile DNA from thousands of samples taken across Oxfordshire over a 2½year period.
It is likely that the robust infection control measures taken in hospitals to safeguard against cross infection of C. difficile have already had a huge impact. Professor Tim Peto
They discovered that no more than 25% of C. difficile infections were passed on from other known cases.
Professor Mark Wilcox of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the Health Protection Agency’s lead on C. difficile infection in England said: 'We need to find out whether these findings hold true in other hospitals. As we know that some people can carry the C. difficile bug in their gut without becoming sick with it and without having diarrhoea, we now need to investigate if they can be a source of infection for others, or whether there are other ways of acquiring C. difficile and then developing symptoms. By doing this, hospitals will be better placed to reduce the risk of CDI to a minimum.'
Professor Peto, who is also a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, added: 'This new understanding of C. difficile may lead us to ask whether hospitals could use a different way of measuring CDI in future. We hope it will add to the thinking on how best to target infection control resources to reduce the spread of the bug even further.'
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley commented: 'This research indicates that good practice in some parts of the NHS may be helping to prevent infection spreading between patients, and this is one reason why the level of C. difficile infections has reduced markedly. We know there is still more to do and this study adds to the evidence base and will help healthcare providers identify where cases are originating so that other measures to further reduce infections can be introduced.'
The study was funded by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, Oxford; the UK Medical Research Council; and the Wellcome Trust.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4547874416358080698-4086626962028350482?l=segeluade.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/xulaz/~4/-r_W9yx6ROY" height="1" width="1"/>

Pics from AFCON SECOND SEMI - FINAL

The new papers boost the case for Dec announcement of a possible Higgs signal. In the case of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), physicists have been able to look at another possible kind of Higgs decay, and that allows them to boost their Higgs signal from 2.5σ to 3.1σ. Taken together with data from the other detector, ATLAS, Higgs overall signal now unofficially stands at about 4.3σ. In other words, if statistics are to be believed, then this signal has about a 99.996% chance of being right.<br /></span><br /></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4547874416358080698-4571618809778177204?l=segeluade.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/xulaz/~4/3Z9jbnkbZH8" height="1" width="1"/>

@MarsCuriosity: I'm not going to the Red Planet alone. v
COTE D’IVOIRE
Stade d’Angondjé, Libreville
February 8, 2012
***
Cote D’Ivoire have done justice to their favourites tag by reaching the semi-final without breaking a sweat. Their opponents in last four, Mali, is easily the most unexpected candidate among this year’s semi-finalists.
MALI

It can be safely said that Mali flew below the radar to enter into their first semi-final since early 2000s. Media back home had lambasted Alain Giresse’s team selection as one of the worst in the country’s AFCON history. Mali didn’t begin AFCON in best of manners, dishing out an unconvincing display, before sealing a facile 1-0 win over Guinea. They were never in the match against Ghana, losing 2-0. Against Botswana, the Eagles needed a victory but they soon went down 1-0. Goals from Dembele and Seydou Keita ensured that Mali broke the jinx of going out in group stages, as they have done in last two editions.
Mali was expected to go out as they squared off against co-hosts Gabon. Gabon was not only bolstered by home support but they were also one of the two teams to have won every single match in AFCON 2012. Egged on by the local crowd Gabon raced to a 1-0 lead in second half thanks to a strike from Eric Mouloungui. Gabon dominated the proceedings with Mali desperately hanging by a thread to save the match. Three minutes after their opening goal, Gabonese striker Daniel Cousin hit the post as entire stadium let out a collective gasp.
Six minutes before the final whistle Mali stunned the home crowd with substitute Diabate restoring parity. Mali defended strongly in extra-time as AFCON 2012 entered its first penalty shootout. Both teams converted their spot kicks before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stepped up to take the 4th kick for Gabon. Aubameyang had been one of the stars for Gabon in AFCON 2012, having scored 3 goals; he also assisted Gabon’s goal in the quarter-final. Somewhat like Roberto Baggio in 1994 World Cup, Aubameyang too missed his penalty kick. As the stadium watched with bated breath Seydou Keita stepped up to take the crucial 5th kick for Mali. The experienced midfielder made no mistakes, putting Mali in the last four.
Mali might have reached the last four on dint of their grit and fighting performances but they will face an almost unstoppable force when they meet Cote D’Ivoire in last four. The Eagles have shown signs of tiring as matches near the end. They were the last team to play a quarter-final match and they played out a nerve racking and physically draining encounter with Gabon. Giresse’s team will need to do something really, really special to topple the Elephants in last four.
Expected Starting XI:Oumar Sissoko, Adama Tamboura, Ousmane Berthe, Cedric Kante, Abdou Traore, Modibo Maiga, Garra Dembele, Seydou Keita, Drissa Diakite, Bakaye Traore, Samba Sow
COTE D'IVOIRE
Didier Drogba, Cote D’Ivoire’s all-time top scorer, has not disappointed his millions of fans in this tournament. The Chelsea legend has scored three goals in AFCON 2012 and was unstoppable in the quarter-final. His strike partner Gervinho has not shown the same kind of form but has assisted Drogba ably. The central midfield combination of EPL hotshots Yaya Toure and Cheik Tiote has been brilliant, as expected. Toure had a particularly impressive match against E. Guinea with one assist and a goal. The Elephants have a problem of plenty with the likes of Solomon Kalou and Seydou Doumbia coming off the bench. It will require an effort of gargantuan proportions to stop Cote D’Ivoire in this edition of AFCON.
Expected Starting XI:Boubacar Barry, Kolo Touré, Arthur Boka, Sol Bamba, Didier Zokora, Yaya Touré, Kafoumba Coulibaly, Max Gradel, Cheik Tiote, Didier Drogba, Gervinho
The Hard Tackle’s Men to Watch Out For
Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure (Cote D’Ivoire), Seydou Keita, Garra Dembele (Mali)
The Hard Tackle’s Prediction

v
GHANA
Estadio de Bata, Bata
February 8th

Andre Ayew’s goal helped Ghana get past a resolute Tunisia side in quarter-final. The Black Stars will now square off against Zambia, who dispatched Sudan 3-0 in the first semi-final.
ZAMBIA

After a 16-year absence, Zambia is once again back in the top-4 of AFCON. In 1995, a hastily assembled team, still reeling from the shock of losing most of the first team players in a tragic plane crash, became everyone’s sentimental favourite as they travelled to the final, unexpectedly. The Copper Bullets had hit the headlines for the wrong reason in the last few days. Some players broke the curfew hours and went out to party, while Clifford Mullenga was sent home for refusing to apologize to the management.
Zambia did not show any sign of internal strife as they overcame Sudan 3-0 after a clinical display. The Western Africans dominated possession from the starting whistle and it wasn’t a surprise when Stoppila Sunzu took advantage of poor defending from Sudan to head Zambia ahead 15 minutes into the match. Despite dominating the proceedings for long parts of the first half, Zambia did not manage to increase their lead.
The match was almost done and dusted six minutes after the hour mark when Zambia were awarded a penalty and their opponents were reduced to ten men. Skipper Chris Katango stepped up the take the penalty only to see it saved on first attempt but the rebound was kind enough for him to slot in. Katongo’s third goal of AFCON 2012 meant the final result was a mere formality. Substitute James Chamanga put the icing on the cake with a peach of a goal four minutes before the final whistle. Zambia’s victory released mass hysteria among football fans and two fans were reportedly killed in accidents resulting from wild celebrations.
For the Copper Bullets, Joseph Musonda has been a rock at the heart of defence. Custodian Kennedy Mweene has also played his part perfectly till now and has made several crucial saves in four matches. 22 year-old Stopilla Sunzu has shown maturity beyong his years in central midfield. He has played the role of a link-man perfectly and topped his perfect match against Sudan by scoring an opportunistic opening goal. Rainford Kalaba holds the remote control of Zambian attacks and he provided two assists against Sudan.

Upfront, the partnership of Chris Katongo and Emmanuel Mayuka has bore rich fruits for Herve Renard’s team. The pair has scored five of the eight goals scored by the team. Katongo scored crucial goals in group stages while Mayunka’s opening goals in the first two matches ensured Zambia were off to a smooth start.
Coach Herve Renard, often dismissed by his critics as being more of a physical trainer than a tactician has also shown impressive tactical awareness during the tournament. His tactics and substitutions have usually been spot on and he didn’t back down from taking a tough stand when his players broke the rules.
Zambia, back on the shores where one of their greatest teams perished one and a half decade ago, mean business and they will be no pushovers in the last four.
Expected Starting XI:Kennedy Mweene, Davies Nkausu, Joseph Musonda, Hichani Himoonde, Stopilla Sunzu, Nathan Sinkala, Chisamba Lungu, Isaac Chansa, Rainford Kalaba, Chris Katongo, Emmanuel Mayuka
------
One of the biggest issues faced by the Black Stars before their semi-final match is that of fatigue. They played a gruelling match against Tunisia. The ill-tempered clash was made to look “like a war” according to Ghana’s assistance coach; perhaps, a bad choice of words. As the match neared towards the final whistle both sets of players were subjected to some heavy tackles. Zambia on the other hand, had one extra-day’s rest and played a much less taxing match in the quarter-final.
Expected Starting XI:Adam Kwarasey, Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah, Anthony Annan, Samuel Inkoom, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Andre Ayew, Sulley Muntari, Masahudu Alhassan, Kwadwo Asamoah, John Boye.
The Hard Tackle’s Men to Watch Out For
Andre Ayew, Gyan Asamoah (Ghana), Chris Katongo, Stophila Sunzu (Zambia)
The Hard Tackle’s Prediction
Zambia 2-1 Ghana

One in five academics in a variety of social science and business fields say they have been asked to pad their papers with superfluous references in order to get published. The figures, from a survey published today in Science 1 , also suggest that journal editors strategically target junior faculty, who inturn were more willing to acquiesce.
The controversial practice is not new: those studying publication ethics have for many years noted that some editors encourage extra references in order to boost a journal's impact factor (a measure of the average number of citations an article in the journal receives over two years). But the survey is the first to try to quantify what it calls 'coercive citation', and shows that this is “uncomfortably common,” according to authors Allen Wilhite, an economist, and Eric Fong, who researches management, both at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Some editors ask researchers to add citations to their journal as a condition of publication.

But experts in journal practices say that although there’s no denying that coercive citation does happen, the survey's figures are surprisingly high. “If this is true, it would be a serious indictment of the publication process. I am not seeing data across a swathe of citations that would support that high rate,” says Marie McVeigh, director of Thomson Reuters’ annual Journal Citation Reports , which publishes impact factors.
Citation pressure
Fong became interested in the problem when he was asked by a journal editor to cite more articles from that journal as a condition of publication. “Until this happened to me, I had never heard of such a thing,” he says. He and Wilhite asked around, and found that some people were familiar with the practice, while others were “absolutely stunned. There was no in-between”, says Wilhite.
So Wilhite and Fong asked more than 54,000 academics in the social-science and business disciplines whether they had heard of the practice, and whether in thepast five years they had been pressured to add more citations to their papers for reasons not based on content. Of the 6,672 respondents, only 40% said they were aware of the practice. But half of those — 20% of the total — said that they had experienced it directly. Assistant professors were 5.5 percentage points more likely to be coerced than higher-ranking professors, and marketing, finance and information systems were the worst-offending disciplines.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4547874416358080698-3371733568536473352?l=segeluade.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/xulaz/~4/pRAcIs-cKus" height="1" width="1"/>
