Every Little Girl Deserves to See Her Beauty Celebrated!

Greetings, my beautiful naturalistas!

Ladies, have you ever looked at a doll and thought, "Now that's a beautiful celebration of our natural beauty!"

Well, that's exactly how I feel when I look at this gorgeous Afrocentric fashion doll!

From her magnificent Afro adorned with colorful little flowers to her elegant gold earrings and vibrant outfit, this beauty certainly knows how to make a statement!

And ladies, that HAIR!

Oh my goodness!

Those abundant curls and coils create a crown worthy of admiration.

But this doll represents something far more meaningful than a fashionable hairstyle.

She represents the beauty of seeing ourselves reflected in the world around us.

Why Representation Matters

For generations, young girls have played with dolls, imagining their futures, creating stories, and discovering what beauty means to them.

But for many Black women, the dolls available during childhood did not always reflect the richness of our skin tones, facial features, or natural hair textures.

Thankfully, the world of fashion dolls has become more inclusive over time.

Today, dolls with natural Afros, braids, locs, curls, coils, and beautiful deeper complexions provide more opportunities for children to see beauty that resembles their own.

And that matters!

When a little girl sees a doll with hair like hers, she can begin to recognize that her own texture is just as worthy of admiration.

Her coils don't need to be straightened to be beautiful.

Her skin doesn't need to be lighter to be celebrated.

And her individuality deserves to shine!

A Crown Full of Personality!

Let's return to the magnificent doll featured in this article.

What first caught my attention was her gorgeous, voluminous Afro.

Those colorful flowers scattered throughout her curls bring playfulness and creativity to an already striking hairstyle.

I especially love how her bold accessories and vibrant outfit complement her beautiful hair.

Nothing about her appearance suggests that natural textured hair should be hidden or changed.

Instead, her entire presentation says:

Be bold. Be beautiful. Be yourself!

Ladies, isn't that a wonderful message?

Teaching Our Daughters and Granddaughters to Love Their Hair

As mothers, grandmothers, aunties, and mentors, we have wonderful opportunities to encourage the next generation.

Sometimes those lessons happen during ordinary moments.

We might be braiding a child's hair, helping her choose a hairstyle, or answering questions about why her curls look different from someone else's.

Those conversations can influence the way she views herself.

Imagine telling a little girl:

"Your curls are beautiful just the way they grow."

Or reminding her that shrinkage, coils, and texture are natural characteristics—not imperfections.

And when we give children dolls that reflect a variety of Black hairstyles and skin tones, we offer another opportunity for appreciation and conversation.

It's not about suggesting that every little girl must look the same.

It's about helping her understand that beauty comes in many wonderful forms.

Natural Hair Is Beautiful at Every Age

One of the greatest lessons from my own natural hair journey has been learning to appreciate the individuality of textured hair.

Whether our hair is worn in a short tapered cut, an Afro, twists, braids, Bantu knots, or a beautiful wash-and-go, there's room for creativity.

And that creativity shouldn't end with adulthood.

Children deserve the freedom to enjoy their natural textures without feeling that their hair must resemble someone else's.

After all, no two crowns are exactly alike!

More Than a Doll — A Celebration of Heritage

Afrocentric fashion and hairstyling can also open conversations about African heritage, creativity, and cultural identity.

Natural hairstyles have long carried cultural and personal significance across African and African-descended communities.

The Afro itself became a powerful symbol of Black pride and self-expression during the twentieth century, although its meanings and styling traditions are varied.

Seeing such hairstyles represented in toys, fashion, artwork, and media can remind us of the richness of that history.

And for children, these representations can be meaningful opportunities to learn and ask questions.

Celebrating Every Coil, Every Kink, Every Crown

Ladies, what I love most about this doll is the confidence her entire appearance seems to express.

She doesn't need a flat iron to be fashionable.

She doesn't need to hide her beautiful texture.

Her natural-looking curls are part of her style!

And that's exactly what I hope every young girl discovers.

Her beauty is not something she must earn by changing who she is.

As I revisit this little article from 2012, I'm reminded why I began sharing my natural hair journey in the first place.

I wanted to celebrate textured hair, exchange experiences, and encourage other women to love their natural crowns.

That message is just as meaningful today.

Bentonite Clay for Natural Hair: Benefits, Gentle Cleansing & Healthy Curl Care

Have you ever noticed how your beautiful curls and coils sometimes feel weighed down, dull, or coated with products, even after you've moisturized them?

Sometimes, ladies, our hair doesn't need another layer of cream, butter, or oil. Sometimes it needs a little attention to cleansing!

Today, we're revisiting an ingredient that has been discussed in the natural hair community for years: bentonite clay.

Whether you're wearing gorgeous 3C curls, springy 4A coils, or tighter 4B and 4C textures, understanding what goes onto your hair is an important part of learning how to care for your crown.

What Is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a naturally occurring mineral clay formed largely from altered volcanic ash. It contains clay minerals, particularly montmorillonite, and is known for its ability to absorb water and bind certain substances on its surface.

For years, bentonite clay has appeared in facial masks, skincare preparations, and homemade natural-hair treatments.

In the natural hair community, it became popular as an occasional cleansing mask for removing excess oils and product residue.

However, there is something important I want my Curl Friends to understand: bentonite clay is not a miracle hair-growth treatment, and claims that it removes toxins from the scalp have not been established by reliable hair-care research.

Its appeal is much simpler: it is an absorbent ingredient that some people enjoy incorporating into their cleansing routines.

Why Do Natural-Hair Enthusiasts Use Bentonite Clay?

Many of us love our leave-in conditioners, curling creams, gels, oils, and moisturizing butters.

But depending on how frequently these products are applied and how thoroughly we cleanse, our strands may begin to feel coated.

Bentonite clay masks are sometimes used to help with:

Excess oil: Clay can absorb some surface oils.
Product residue: A clay mask may help loosen or remove certain residues during rinsing, although it is not a proven substitute for a good clarifying shampoo.
A refreshed feeling: Some users enjoy how their hair and scalp feel after a clay treatment.
Occasional cleansing: A clay mask can be an optional addition to a routine rather than something used every wash day.

Keep in mind that everyone's results will differ. There is limited direct research on bentonite clay's effects on human hair, so individual experiences should not be mistaken for guaranteed results.

Bentonite Clay and Our Beautiful Curls and Coils

Ladies, one thing I've learned throughout my natural-hair journey is that our hair does not all respond to the same ingredients in the same way.

Some of us have fine strands, others have coarse strands, and many of us have several different curl patterns on one head!

For someone whose hair becomes oily or heavily coated with styling products, an occasional clay mask might feel refreshing.

But if your curls are already dry, fragile, color-treated, or easily tangled, a clay treatment may leave them feeling even drier.

That is why paying attention to your hair's response is always more important than following a popular hair-care trend.

A beautiful crown deserves individualized care.

How to Try a Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

If you decide to experiment with bentonite clay, I recommend beginning with a simple approach.

What you'll need:

Cosmetic-grade bentonite clay from a reputable supplier
Clean water
A clean mixing bowl and spoon
Your favorite moisturizing conditioner for afterward

Application:

Follow the manufacturer's mixing instructions to create a smooth, spreadable paste.
Test a small area of skin first and avoid breathing in loose clay powder.
Apply gently to manageable sections of hair, avoiding excessive pulling, rubbing, or tangling.
Follow the product's recommended application time. Do not allow the clay to become excessively dry or hardened on your hair.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, taking care to remove residue from your curls and scalp.
Follow with a moisturizing conditioner, gently detangle, and style as usual.

Never apply clay to irritated or broken skin. Stop using it if you experience burning, itching, or irritation. For persistent scalp symptoms, consult a dermatologist.

And ladies, please do not feel that you must use apple cider vinegar or essential oils in your mixture! Keeping things simple can help minimize irritation.

What About Apple Cider Vinegar and Olive Oil?

Older natural-hair recipes frequently combined bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and other ingredients.

Let's look at these ingredients separately.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is acidic and has long appeared in homemade hair rinses.

However, undiluted vinegar can irritate the skin and scalp, and there is limited evidence that homemade vinegar rinses provide the dramatic benefits sometimes advertised.

For most people, a properly formulated shampoo and conditioner are more predictable choices.

Olive Oil

Olive oil can help lubricate hair strands and reduce friction, which some people find useful when managing dry or textured hair.

However, olive oil does not cure hair loss, repair split ends, or block the hormone responsible for certain forms of hair thinning.

If your hair enjoys oils, a small amount may be useful as part of your conditioning or styling routine.

Remember, Curl Friends: healthy hair care does not have to be complicated to be effective!

Don't Forget the Moisture!

After any cleansing treatment, it's important to notice how your hair feels.

If your curls seem rough or dry, choose a conditioner with good slip and take your time detangling.

You do not need every trending ingredient to have healthy, beautiful curls.

Let's take another trip down memory lane!

If you were part of the natural hair community back in 2013, you probably remember how exciting it was to discover new styling products. We were experimenting with twist-outs, wash-and-go styles, curl puddings, custards, gels, and just about anything that promised beautiful curl definition.

One product featured during that period was Nothing But Curly Pudding, a styling cream marketed to help define and enhance natural curls and coils.

Today, we're revisiting this product from the Crowning Glory archives while discussing what we have learned about choosing styling products for our beautiful natural hair.

What Was Nothing But Curly Pudding?

Nothing But Curly Pudding was presented as a curl-defining styling product for textured hair. Its packaging emphasized enhancing curls and coils.

At the time, products like this appealed to naturals who wanted more definition without completely changing the character of their hair.

But ladies, here's something I've learned over the years: a product doesn't have to work for everybody to be the right product for somebody!

Our strands are wonderfully different. What creates soft, defined curls on one head may leave another person's hair feeling coated, stiff, or weighed down.

Understanding the Ingredients

The original product label featured conditioning agents, oils, and styling ingredients intended to influence the feel and appearance of the hair.

One ingredient worth discussing is glycerin, a humectant commonly used in hair-care formulations.

Humectants can help attract and retain moisture, although the way a product performs depends on its entire formula, the weather, and the condition of your hair.

The archived ingredient list also included silicones and conditioning ingredients that may contribute to slip, smoothness, and styling performance.

Some naturals prefer silicone-free products, while others enjoy the smoothness silicones can provide. Neither preference is automatically right for every head of hair.

Is Curl Pudding Right for Fine or Low-Porosity Hair?

Now, this is where I pay especially close attention!

Having fine strands and low-porosity hair myself, I have learned that heavier creams are not always my best friends.

My hair tends to respond better to lightweight leave-ins, liquid moisturizers, and carefully applied oils.

For those of us with fine or low-porosity strands, using too much styling product can sometimes leave the hair feeling heavy or coated.

My advice? Start with a small amount, distribute it evenly, and observe how your hair responds before applying more.

Remember, ladies: more product does not necessarily mean more moisture or better curls.

What Makes a Good Curl-Defining Product?

When selecting a curl pudding or styling cream, I like to consider several things:

Does it provide enough slip for easy styling?
Does it leave the hair soft after drying?
Does it work well with my leave-in conditioner?
Does it create visible buildup or flaking?
Can I maintain the style without repeatedly applying large amounts of product?

A styling product may help curls clump together and appear more defined, but it cannot permanently change your natural curl pattern.

And that's perfectly fine!

Our goal should be to care for the hair we have rather than constantly trying to make it behave like someone else's.

What This 2013 Product Spotlight Teaches Us Today

Looking back, I appreciate how products such as Nothing But Curly Pudding encouraged conversations about textured hair and styling choices.

These early product discoveries were part of a much larger natural hair journey.

We learned about ingredients, experimented with methods, and gradually discovered that healthy hair care is not about purchasing every product on the shelf.

It's about understanding what works for our particular strands.

Hello, My Beautiful Naturalistas!

Ladies, we're going to have an interesting conversation today!

Have you ever looked at someone with a beautiful head of curly hair and wondered about their natural texture?

Perhaps you've seen a woman with an enormous cloud of curls, another with tightly wound coils, or someone whose hair seems to defy gravity altogether.

And then you discover that the person wearing those beautiful curls comes from a background you might not have expected!

Well, ladies, that brings me to today's conversation.

Does natural hair texture belong to one particular race or ethnicity?

The simple answer is no.

But there's a much deeper conversation worth having, especially when we begin talking about the Afro.

So, pull up a chair, ladies. Let's talk about it!

A Look Back at the Crowning Glory Archives

Back in August 2015, I shared a link to an article discussing Caucasian women with Afro-style hairstyles.

At the time, I found the subject interesting because it challenged some common assumptions about naturally curly and voluminous hair.

Looking back more than a decade later, I believe the topic deserves a fuller conversation.

And that's one of the reasons I enjoy revisiting my older articles.

We get an opportunity to explore a subject again with greater understanding, a different perspective, and perhaps a little more wisdom.

Natural Hair Comes in Many Beautiful Textures

One of the wonderful things about human hair is its incredible variety.

Some people have naturally straight strands.

Others have loose waves, cascading curls, springy ringlets, or tightly coiled textures.

And many people have more than one curl pattern growing from the same scalp!

Hair texture is influenced by genetics and the structure of the hair follicle, among other factors.

These characteristics don't fit neatly into racial categories.

People from many ethnic backgrounds can have naturally curly or highly textured hair.

And people within the same family can have completely different hair textures.

Isn't that fascinating?

Our hair is wonderfully diverse, just like the people wearing it.

But Let's Talk About the Afro

Now, ladies, here's where I believe an important distinction needs to be made.

While naturally curly and voluminous hair exists across many populations, the Afro hairstyle carries a particular historical and cultural significance within the Black community.

During the twentieth century, especially throughout the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the Afro became a powerful symbol of Black identity, cultural pride, and resistance to discriminatory beauty standards.

Wearing natural hair openly challenged the idea that Black women and men needed to straighten or alter their hair to be considered attractive, respectable, or professional.

For many, the Afro represented freedom.

Self-acceptance.

Pride.

And the declaration that our natural features were worthy of celebration.

Black hair was never something that needed to be fixed to become beautiful.

That message still matters today.

Can Women of Other Backgrounds Have Afro-Like Hair?

Absolutely!

Some women of European, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and other backgrounds naturally have dense, curly hair that grows outward and creates a rounded, voluminous silhouette.

Others may use styling techniques to create additional fullness.

But here's something worth remembering:

Having naturally voluminous curly hair and wearing an Afro as a culturally significant hairstyle are not necessarily the same experience.

We can acknowledge that similar-looking textures occur across different populations while also respecting the Afro's deep connection to Black history and culture.

There is room for both appreciation and understanding.

And I believe conversations about natural hair become richer when we recognize those distinctions.

The Problem With Putting Hair in Boxes

Ladies, remember when the natural hair typing system became extremely popular?

We were comparing 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C curl patterns.

And while those categories can help describe certain curl shapes, they don't tell us everything about our hair.

Hair density matters.

Strand thickness matters.

Porosity matters.

And how our hair behaves in different weather conditions matters, too!

Two women who identify as having 3C hair may have completely different styling experiences.

One may have fine strands that become weighed down easily.

Another may have thicker strands that respond differently to the same products.

That's why I always encourage my readers to learn their own hair rather than relying entirely on a classification.

Your hair type is a description, not a limitation.

Beauty Shouldn't Be a Competition

Here's another issue that I think deserves attention.

Sometimes, conversations about hair texture become comparisons about whose curls are prettier, softer, more manageable, or more desirable.

And ladies, that's when we begin missing the beauty of natural hair altogether.

Loose curls are beautiful.

Tight coils are beautiful.

Kinky hair is beautiful.

A full, fluffy Afro is beautiful.

And so is hair that doesn't form perfectly defined ringlets.

Our differences shouldn't become a ranking system.

For generations, many Black women have had to navigate unfair assumptions about their natural hair.

Even today, natural hairstyles can be misunderstood or subjected to discriminatory standards in schools and workplaces.

That's why celebrating textured hair should never require diminishing another woman's appearance or overlooking the cultural experiences surrounding Black hair.

There is beauty in our differences, and there is dignity in our individual stories.

What I've Learned on My Own Natural Hair Journey

Over the years, I've learned that understanding my hair requires more than finding the right styling product.

I've had to learn about moisture, porosity, strand thickness, detangling, seasonal changes, and the importance of protecting my ends.

I've also learned that my hair doesn't have to behave like anyone else's.

There have been days when my curls seemed to cooperate beautifully.

And other days?

Well, ladies, let's just say my curls had their own plans! LOL!

But that's part of the journey.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the freedom of embracing the hair God gave me.

I don't need every strand to fall perfectly into place.

And I certainly don't need my hair to resemble someone else's to feel beautiful.

Appreciating Hair Across Cultures

I believe we can admire a beautiful hairstyle while also being respectful of its cultural origins.

We can learn from one another.

We can exchange hair care ideas.

And we can recognize that people with similar-looking curls may have very different histories and experiences.

Appreciation becomes more meaningful when we take the time to understand the stories behind the styles.

Whether someone wears loose natural curls, tightly coiled hair, a twist-out, braids, or a magnificent Afro, there is always more to the story than the hairstyle itself.

My Final Thoughts

Ladies, if there is one thing I hope you take away from today's conversation, it's this:

Texture has no one look, and beauty has no single definition.

Naturally curly and coily hair exists across many backgrounds.

At the same time, the Afro remains an important part of Black cultural history and identity.

We can celebrate the diversity of natural hair without erasing that history.

And we can appreciate our own crowns without comparing them to someone else's.

A place where we celebrate.

You know exactly what I'm talking about!

You spend your precious time washing, conditioning, detangling, and styling your beautiful natural hair.

Your curls are popping!

Your definition is fabulous!

You look in the mirror and think, "Oh yes, honey! Today is going to be a GOOD hair day!"

Then you step outside.

The humidity hits.

Your curls begin expanding.

And before you know it, that beautifully defined wash-and-go has decided to become a full-blown fluffy masterpiece!

Now, don't get me wrong. I absolutely love big, beautiful natural hair.

But sometimes, ladies, we're looking for definition rather than expansion!

So, what exactly causes frizz? And more importantly, what can we do to manage it without fighting against our natural texture?

Let's get into it!

First Things First: What Is Frizz?

Frizz occurs when individual hair strands separate from the surrounding curl pattern, creating a less uniform appearance.

Instead of curls clumping neatly together, some strands lift away, expand, or become more noticeable.

This can make the hair appear fluffy, fuzzy, or less defined.

But here's something important:

Frizz does not automatically mean your hair is damaged, unhealthy, or lacking moisture.

Some hair textures naturally have more visible frizz than others.

And that's perfectly normal!

The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate every little frizzy strand.

Ladies, can we talk?

There comes a moment in almost every natural hair journey when you stand in front of the mirror, examine those roots, stretch out a curl, look at those ends, and wonder, "Now, what in the world am I supposed to do with all this hair?"

Perhaps you've decided to stop relaxing your hair. Maybe you're noticing that your texture isn't quite what it used to be. Or perhaps you're simply tired of fighting with your strands and ready to discover what your hair can actually do.

Whatever brought you here, welcome to the journey!

And before somebody comes running with a pair of scissors, let me say something.

You do NOT have to do the Big Chop to begin embracing your natural hair!

Yes, I said it!

Some women love the freedom of cutting everything off and starting fresh. Others would prefer to transition gradually, holding on to their length while their natural texture grows.

Neither journey is more authentic than the other.

After all, it's your crown!

Two Textures, One Head, and a Whole Lot of Patience!

One of the biggest challenges of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair is learning to manage two completely different textures.

At the roots, you may have tightly coiled, beautifully textured new growth. Meanwhile, those relaxed ends are hanging on, seemingly determined to remind you of your former hair routine!

And somewhere between those two textures is what we call the line of demarcation.

That is the point where your natural hair meets your chemically relaxed hair.

Ladies, that little meeting place deserves some serious TLC!

Why? Because it is often the most vulnerable part of transitioning hair. The differences in texture and elasticity can make it especially susceptible to breakage when you're detangling, manipulating, or styling.

The goal is not to force both textures into submission.

The goal is to learn how to care for them together until you're ready to let those relaxed ends go.

However, transitioning hair requires more than purchasing every moisturizing product that promises to transform your strands overnight.

It requires consistency.

Here's where I would concentrate my attention:

Condition generously. Look for a conditioner with good slip to help your fingers or detangling tool glide through the hair.
Detangle patiently. Work in sections, starting at the ends and gradually moving toward the roots.
Use a leave-in conditioner. Focus on keeping your natural growth and relaxed lengths manageable.
Deep condition when needed. Pay attention to how your strands feel rather than following every trend on social media.
Protect your ends. Those older strands have already been through quite a bit!

And please remember: adding more oil does not automatically mean you're adding more moisture.

Oil can help lubricate strands and reduce moisture loss, depending on your hair and the product. But it doesn't replace water-based conditioning.

Sometimes the answer isn't another product.

Sometimes it's simply a better routine!

But protective should actually mean protective!

5. Braids Without Excessive Tension

Braids can give you a break from daily styling, provided they aren't too heavy or tight and you continue caring for your scalp and hair underneath.

And ladies, protective styling doesn't mean leaving your hair unattended for weeks and simply hoping for the best!

Your hair still needs care.

Do I Have to Cut My Relaxed Ends?

Eventually, if your goal is completely natural hair, those chemically straightened ends will need to be removed.

A relaxer permanently changes the treated portion of the hair. No cream, oil, or deep conditioner can turn those relaxed strands back into their original curl pattern.

However, you get to decide how quickly that transition takes place.

Some women trim a little every few weeks or months. Others allow considerable new growth before making a larger cut.

There is no universal deadline.

The important thing is paying attention to splitting, tangling, thinning ends, and breakage.

Sometimes holding on to length that is severely damaged isn't helping us retain healthy hair.

And that brings me to something else.

What Happens When Our Hair Begins to Change With Age?

Ladies, let's not pretend our hair remains exactly the same throughout every season of our lives!

As we mature, some of us begin to notice changes in density, texture, dryness, and even the way our curls behave.

And your hair has an entirely different opinion!

Listen, ladies!

Your 4C hair does not need to behave like someone's 3C hair to be beautiful.

Your coils do not need to hang to your shoulders to be healthy.

And shrinkage does not mean your hair isn't growing.

Natural hair has its own character, and learning its behavior is part of the experience.

We spend far too much time trying to make our hair imitate somebody else's crown instead of appreciating the beauty of our own.

Your hair journey is personal.

You don't have to cut it all tomorrow.

You don't have to prove that you're natural enough.

What’s in My Fall Hair-Care Stash?

What I’m Keeping, What I’m Tossing & What I’m Not Buying Again!

Years ago, I wrote a post here on Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks called “Getting Rid of My Product Stash.”

And when I look back at that picture of all those products, I have to laugh.

Because honey...

I had enough products to open a small beauty supply store!

Shampoos. Conditioners. Curl creams. Butters. Gels. Oils. Puddings. Custards. Milks. Smoothies.

If somebody put the words “curl defining” on the jar, apparently I thought I needed it!

But after years of wearing and learning my natural hair, I've discovered something important:

More products don't necessarily mean healthier hair.

So as we transition into fall, instead of running out to buy another collection, I'm doing something different.

I'm shopping my own stash first.

And this time, I'm asking one simple question:

What does my hair actually need?

First Things First: Know What You're Trying to Fix

Before buying another product, ask yourself why you're buying it.

Is your hair actually dry?

Are you experiencing breakage?

Do you need more hold for your twist-outs?

Is your scalp flaky?

Are your ends tangling?

Or...

Did you just watch somebody on YouTube use it and their curls looked fabulous?

We've all been there.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned during my natural-hair journey is that someone else's holy grail can become another unused jar sitting underneath my bathroom sink.

Your texture, strand thickness, density, porosity, styling habits and scalp needs can all influence how a product performs.

Learn your hair before you learn somebody else's product shelf.

My Fall Hair-Care Stash: The Essentials

These days, I'd rather have a smaller group of products that actually work than a cabinet overflowing with things I rarely use.

For most wash days, we really only need a few basic categories.

1. A Good Shampoo

Yes, I said shampoo.

There was a time in the natural-hair community when shampoo almost became a bad word. Many of us were afraid that cleansing our hair would automatically dry it out.

But our scalps need cleansing.

Styling creams, gels, oils, sweat and everyday buildup don't simply disappear.

For regular wash days, I look for something that cleans my scalp and hair effectively without leaving my strands feeling excessively rough.

And occasionally, when I've been a little heavy-handed with products, I may need a stronger clarifying cleanse.

A clean scalp is part of healthy hair care.

2. A Conditioner With SLIP!

My 3C–4C sisters know exactly what I'm talking about.

Give me some slip!

A conditioner should make detangling easier rather than turning wash day into a wrestling match.

I like to work in sections, apply conditioner generously where needed and carefully detangle starting near the ends before moving upward.

And I don't rush.

One of the quickest ways to turn a detangling session into unnecessary breakage is trying to force a comb through our beautiful coils.

Patience is a hair-care product too—and it's free!

3. A Leave-In That Plays Well With Others

Have you ever layered two products and suddenly had little white flakes all over your hair?

Been there.

Not every leave-in works well underneath every styling product.

My fall stash needs a leave-in that gives my hair enough softness and manageability without making it feel coated.

And here's another lesson I've learned:

More isn't always better.

Sometimes we're blaming a product when we've simply used too much of it.

4. ONE Good Styler

Yes.

I said one.

Not a curl cream, twisting butter, defining custard, mousse, gel, pudding and smoothie on the same wash day!

Choose your styler according to the hairstyle.

For a twist-out or braid-out, I may want something that gives definition with softness.

For a wash-and-go, I may want more hold.

For mini twists, I might prefer something lighter so the hair remains flexible.

The hairstyle should help determine the product—not the other way around.

5. Something for My Ends

Our ends are the oldest part of our hair.

If you're trying to retain length, don't forget about them.

Depending upon your hair, that may mean periodically applying a small amount of your preferred conditioning or styling product and protecting your ends from excessive manipulation and friction.

And sometimes the best thing we can do for our ends is...

CUT THEM.

I know. I know.

But holding onto damaged, splitting ends isn't length retention.

Sometimes a good trim makes the entire head of hair look fuller and behave better.

What I'm Keeping

I'm keeping products that:

Actually work on my hair.

Not products I want to work.

Not products that worked beautifully for somebody else's curls.

Products that consistently leave my hair clean, conditioned, manageable and styled the way I want it.

I'm also keeping products that make my routine easier.

At this stage of my natural-hair journey, I don't want an eight-hour wash day.

If I need a calculator to remember which product goes on next...

We have gone too far!

What I'm Tossing

Fall is a great time to clean out the hair cabinet.

I'm checking products for changes in smell, texture, appearance and their expiration or period-after-opening guidance.

I'm also getting rid of products I know I don't like.

You know that product you've had for two years because you paid $18.99 for it and refuse to throw it away?

Meanwhile, every wash day you look at it...

Move it...

And choose something else.

Sis.

It may be time.

Keeping something we don't use doesn't put the money back in our pocket.

It just creates clutter.

What I'm NOT Buying Again

Now we're getting personal!

I'm not automatically buying something simply because:

“NEW!”

is written across the label.

I'm not buying five products from a collection because I liked one.

I'm not buying another styling cream when I already have three open.

And I'm definitely trying not to purchase a product simply because somebody with gorgeous hair said:

“Y'all...you NEED this!”

No, ma'am.

I'm going to need a little more information than that!

What About Oils?

This deserves its own conversation because oils have had quite the reputation in the natural-hair world.

Oil and water aren't the same thing.

An oil may help with lubrication, shine, reducing friction or supporting a particular styling routine, but pouring oil onto chronically dry hair doesn't replace cleansing and conditioning.

Some naturals love oils.

Others find that heavy oil use leaves their hair coated or makes their routine more difficult.

Pay attention to your own hair.

That's becoming our theme around here.

And What About Our Maturing Hair?

This is something I want Crowning Glory to talk about more often.

As we mature, our hair may not respond exactly the way it did ten or twenty years ago.

Some of us are embracing gray.

Some are noticing changes in density.

Our strands may feel different.

Our scalps may behave differently.

And sometimes the products we've sworn by for years suddenly don't seem to give us the same results.

That's another reason I'm moving away from having a rigid “holy grail” product list.

Our hair can change.

And our routine is allowed to change with it.

The Fall Stash Challenge

Here's what I'd like us to do before our next Crowning Glory conversation.

Go into your bathroom, bedroom, closet—or wherever you've hidden that natural-hair product collection.

Pull everything out.

Then ask yourself:

Do I use it?
Does my hair like it?
Do I actually need it?

Create three groups:

KEEP — TOSS — USE IT UP.

And before you buy another hair product this fall, shop your stash first.

You might be surprised by what you've already purchased.

Our Crowns Don't Need a Cabinet Full of Products

If I could go back and tell the woman in my 2019 product-stash picture something, I think I would say:

“Carolyn, put the jar down.”

But that's part of the journey.

I've learned.

My hair has changed.

I've changed.

And that's what makes returning to Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks so much fun.

We're not beginning our natural-hair journey all over again.

We're continuing it—with a little more wisdom.

Week 1 — From Summer Curls to Fall Coils

Preparing 3C–4C Natural Hair for the Change of Season

There’s something about the changing of the seasons that makes me want to take inventory.

We change our clothes. We put away some of our summer favorites. We pull out the sweaters, boots, scarves, and deeper fall colors.

But what about our hair?

Our natural hair goes through seasonal transitions too. The routine that worked beautifully during the hot, humid days of summer may need a little tweaking as we move into the cooler, drier days of fall.

And if you have followed Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks for a while, you may remember that I have had my share of adventures with natural hair—and yes, quite a few adventures with hair products too!

I went natural in 2010, and one thing I have learned is this:

Natural hair is not something you master once and never have to think about again.

Our hair changes. Our lifestyles change. The seasons change. And as we mature, our hair can change right along with us.

So as we say goodbye to summer, let’s talk about preparing our beautiful 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C curls, coils, and kinks for fall.

First, Give Your Hair a Fall Checkup

Before running out to buy another product—and I am talking to myself here too!—take a few minutes to really look at your hair.

How does it feel?

After a summer of sun, humidity, swimming, traveling, wash-and-gos, ponytails and other styles, your hair may be telling you exactly what it needs.

Check your ends. Do they feel rough or tangled? Does your hair feel unusually dry? Are you experiencing more breakage than usual? Is your scalp comfortable, or is there buildup?

Sometimes the answer isn't another product. Sometimes our hair simply needs a good cleansing, deep conditioning, a trim, and a little less manipulation.

Moisture, Moisture...and More Moisture?

We hear the word moisture constantly in the natural-hair community, particularly when we're talking about Type 4 hair.

But here is something I've learned: we don't necessarily need to keep piling products onto our hair.

Water is the foundation of hydration. Conditioner helps make our strands more manageable, and styling products can help us maintain the style and feel we want between wash days.

As the air becomes cooler and indoor heat starts running, pay attention to how quickly your hair begins to feel dry.

Your fall routine may need to include a richer conditioner or leave-in—but let your hair, rather than the season or social media, tell you what it needs.

My Simple Fall Wash-Day Routine

I want to keep this simple because natural hair care does not have to require twelve products and an entire Saturday!

A good basic routine might include:

Cleanse the scalp and hair. Use a shampoo that cleans effectively without leaving your hair feeling excessively stripped. If you've been using lots of gels, oils and creams during the summer, an occasional clarifying wash may be helpful.
Condition and detangle. Work in sections, use plenty of slip, and detangle gently from the ends upward. Our goal isn't to fight our hair—it's to work with it.
Deep condition when your hair needs it. If your hair feels especially dry or difficult to manage, this may be a good time for a conditioning treatment.
Apply your leave-in and styler. You don't necessarily need five layers of products. Start with what your hair needs and what works with the style you're creating.
Protect your hair at night. A satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase can help reduce friction and preserve your style.

And don't forget those ends! They are the oldest part of our hair and often need the most gentle handling.

Now Let's Talk Fall Hair!

One of my favorite things about natural hair is its versatility. We can curl it, coil it, twist it, braid it, stretch it, pin it up or let it stand gloriously toward heaven! And fall gives us some beautiful styling possibilities.

The Twist-Out is still one of my favorite transitional styles. It gives definition and volume while allowing us to stretch tightly coiled hair without necessarily using direct heat.

Mini Twists are perfect when you want to give yourself a break from daily styling. They can be worn loose, pinned up, pulled back or dressed up with accessories.

A Flat-Twist Updo is especially beautiful for fall. It keeps the ends tucked away and can transition beautifully from everyday wear to church, dinner or a special event. Just remember: protective doesn't mean tight.

The Afro isn't going anywhere just because summer is over! A beautifully shaped Afro with a sweater, statement earrings and fall makeup? Yes, ma'am!

And Knotless Braids can be a wonderful longer-lasting option. Fall is also the perfect time to experiment with warm shades such as cinnamon, auburn, chestnut, burgundy and chocolate.

Are You Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural?

I especially want to make room at the table for my sisters who are somewhere between relaxed and natural.

You do not have to do the Big Chop to be considered natural.

If you want to gradually grow your relaxer out and trim your ends over time, that is your journey.

The challenge is that you're caring for two textures at the same time.

The point where your natural hair meets the relaxed hair—the line of demarcation—can be vulnerable to breakage. Gentle detangling, conditioning and low-manipulation styling become especially important.

Twist-outs, braid-outs, flexi-rod sets, roller sets and flat twists can also help blend the two textures while you're transitioning.

And There's Another Transition We Need to Talk About...

There is another hair transition that doesn't get nearly enough attention:

Natural hair as we mature.

Our hair at 40 may not behave exactly as it did at 25. And our hair at 50, 60, 70 and beyond may introduce us to an entirely new crown.

Gray strands can have a different texture. Density may change. Some women notice increased dryness or thinning. Styles we once loved may no longer suit the way we want to care for our hair.

That doesn't mean our natural-hair journey is ending.

It means our crown is entering another season.

And I think that's a conversation worth having here at Crowning Glory.

Before You Buy Another Product...

Now, some of you who remember this blog are probably laughing already. Because years ago I wrote about getting rid of my product stash.

Oh yes!

The Product Junkie struggle was REAL! 😆

And the natural-hair industry has certainly not stopped giving us beautiful jars, wonderful fragrances, new ingredients and promises that this will finally be THE product!

But this fall, I want us to try something different.

Shop your stash first.

Pull out what you already own. Check expiration or period-after-opening guidance where applicable. Look at what actually worked for your hair—and pay attention to the products you continually push to the back of the cabinet.

Before purchasing something new, ask:

What problem am I trying to solve?

If we can't answer that question, perhaps we don't need another jar just yet.

And yes...

I am talking to myself too. 😂

Your Crown, Your Journey

Whether your hair reaches your waist or you're rocking a two-inch TWA...

Have you ever discovered a hair product completely by accident and ended up absolutely loving it?

Well, honey, that's exactly what happened to me!

If you've been following my natural-hair journey, you know I enjoy experimenting with products that promise beautiful curl definition, shine, and manageability.

But I also enjoy finding a good bargain!

One of my favorite places to browse for natural-hair products is Marshalls. I enjoy discovering different brands and occasionally finding products that would normally cost more elsewhere.

That's where I purchased The Doux Big Poppa Defining Gel.

But ladies, the real surprise didn't happen in the store.

It happened on wash day!

How I Accidentally Discovered Big Poppa

After bringing Big Poppa home, I placed it among my other hair-care products.

One day, after washing my hair, I reached for what I thought was The Doux Bee Girl Honey Curl Custard.

I had used Bee Girl previously, so I was familiar with its texture and consistency.

But as I began applying the product, something felt different.

The consistency was thicker and smoother than I remembered.

I looked at the jar and realized something.

Honey, I wasn't using Bee Girl at all! I had picked up Big Poppa!

LOL!

Well, I had already started applying it, so I decided to continue and see what would happen.

My curls didn't appear to shrink as dramatically as they ordinarily would.

Instead, they maintained a more elongated appearance.

They were glossy, springy, and beautifully defined.

I remember looking at my hair and thinking:

WOW!

I was impressed enough to photograph the results.

And ladies, the photographs accompanying this review show my actual natural hair after using the product.

No professional styling session. No promotional model. Just my own natural-hair experience.

Why My Fine, Low-Porosity Hair Matters

Now, here's where I want to share something important.

Not all natural hair responds to styling products in the same way.

My hair has fine strands and low porosity, so I've learned to pay close attention to product consistency and how my curls respond.

I don't ordinarily favor heavy butters or thick styling creams.

Instead, I generally prefer lightweight oils and liquid leave-in conditioners.

But my experience with Big Poppa reminded me that sometimes a product can surprise you.

Although the gel was thicker than some of my usual stylers, I enjoyed how smoothly it applied and how my curls looked afterward.

Now, I've spoken before about my appreciation for humectants, particularly in certain warmer-weather conditions.

However, humidity, formulation, and individual hair characteristics can all affect how a product performs.

The most important thing for me was seeing how Big Poppa behaved on my hair.

And in this particular styling session, the results exceeded my expectations!

Let's Talk About the Price

Another pleasant surprise was the value.

When I purchased Big Poppa at Marshalls, I remember paying approximately $14.99.

I appreciated the amount of product in the jar and its wide opening, which made accessing the gel easy.

Now, ladies, prices and product availability can change, so that was simply my purchase experience.

But you know how we love finding something that works beautifully without spending a fortune!

My Final Verdict: Would I Buy Big Poppa Again?

Let me tell you something.

I've tried many products throughout my natural-hair journey.

Some have become longtime favorites.

Others worked reasonably well but didn't inspire me to purchase them again.

And then there are those unexpected discoveries!

The Doux Big Poppa Defining Gel was one of those discoveries for me.

I appreciated the smooth application, the beautifully defined curls, the glossy finish, and especially the reduced shrinkage I observed.

Hello all my naturally curly 3c to 4a-c ladies. The Doux Company has placed on your local Beauty Supply Stores shelves a new Custard-styling agent.

The Doux markets Bee Girl Honey Curl Custard as a styling product designed to provide curl definition, shine, and hold, particularly for tighter curl patterns.

But as we know, ladies, what works beautifully for one person's curls may perform very differently on another person's hair. So I decided to give it a try and see how it performed on my own 3C curls.

Perfect for wash-and-gos that need to last, twist-outs that demand definition, or any style where you want that "I woke up perfect" energy. No helmet head, no residue, no second-day sadness. Just juicy, defined curls that make people ask for your routine. Your tightest coils about to get the VIP treatment they deserve. Even 4C hair bows down to the queen bee.

I washed my hair, as I usually do and decided that I would still use my Paul Mitchell Hair conditioner. While hair was still wet, I sectioned my hair into four sections and then I further section each quarter into even smaller section in order to make sure I had complete, coverage.

The texture of the product was thicker that of the usual flax seed gel. The smell was pleasing and reminded me of honey. It glided on my tresses smoothly and easily. I used my Denman brush and the curls in my tresses seemed to magically appear. I was careful to not to put too much on my smaller sections to avoid the chance of flaking after my hair dried. That was not easy to do because it was easy to glide on hair.

It is priced reasonably. You get 16 ounces for around $15.99. Packaging is clean and graphics are easy to recognize.

My Final Verdict: Would I Buy It Again?

After trying The Doux Bee Girl Honey Curl Custard, I found the results acceptable, but the product didn't become one of my must-have stylers.

I liked its thick consistency, pleasant fragrance, and how smoothly it applied to my soaking-wet hair. My wash-and-go results were decent, but I wasn't impressed enough to make a special trip to the beauty supply store to purchase another jar.

At the time of my review, I purchased a 16-ounce jar for approximately $15.99.

Would I finish the product? Absolutely.

Would I rush out to repurchase it? Probably not.

Why I Still Prefer SheaMoisture Curling Soufflé

Now, Curl Friends, let me explain why SheaMoisture's Curling Soufflé has remained one of my preferred styling products.

One word: MOISTURE!

As someone with fine, low-porosity natural hair, I have learned that maintaining the right balance of moisture and styling product is essential to keeping my curls soft, springy, and beautifully defined.

But when I compared the experience with my familiar Curling Soufflé routine, I simply preferred the soufflé.

And that's what our natural-hair journey is all about.

Not every good product will become YOUR favorite product!

My Final Verdict: Would I Purchase Bee Girl Again?

Would I finish the jar? Absolutely!

Did I appreciate its smooth application and pleasant fragrance? Yes!

Would I rush out to purchase another jar?

Probably not.

For my particular hair needs and styling preferences, SheaMoisture Curling Soufflé remains my preferred choice.

Maybe you are like Me? Looking for a hairstyle that will simply hold up the humidity of a heat wave! What can we do to our hair that will keep us looking like we did wake up with INTENTION! That's a lot to ask for in what seems to be an endless heatwave!

1. The Natural Curly Mohawk

Ladies, sometimes the summer heat calls for a hairstyle that keeps our curls looking fabulous without having every strand resting against our necks!

A natural curly mohawk is one option.

How to create the look:

Begin with clean, detangled hair.
Divide your hair into three or four sections, working from the front toward the back.
Smooth each section gently toward the center of your head.
Secure the sections with soft hair bands, avoiding excessive tension around the edges.
Allow your curls to remain loose along the center, creating a beautiful mohawk effect.
Fluff and arrange your curls until you achieve your desired fullness.

For nighttime maintenance, loosely protect your curls with a satin bonnet or scarf.

2. The Cornrow Braided Updo

A braided updo can keep hair off the neck while offering a polished, versatile appearance.

Can One Product Really Deliver Five Days of Defined Curls?

Hello, my beautiful naturalistas!

You know how it goes. You're scrolling through YouTube, watching your favorite natural hair content creators, and suddenly a product catches your attention.

The curls are popping, the shine is incredible, and everybody seems to be talking about it!

Before you know it, you're reaching for your purse and heading to the beauty supply store. LOL!

Well, that's exactly what happened when I discovered The Doux Pop Lock Wash + Go 5-Day Curl Forming Glaze.

After watching several reviews, I became curious. Could this lightweight glaze really provide definition, shine, humidity resistance, and multiple days of beautiful wash-and-go curls?

I decided to put it to the test!

But before we get into the results, let me tell you a little about my hair.

Understanding My Hair Texture

My natural hair is predominantly 3C, with tighter curls in the back that lean more toward the type 4 family.

My strands are also fine, which means I have to be particularly careful about using too much product.

Heavy butters, thick creams, and excessive layering can leave my hair feeling weighed down.

I generally prefer products that provide definition without sacrificing movement, softness, or volume.

And here's another little fact about my curls: They usually clump together fairly easily, especially when I'm using my Bounce Curl styling brush.

So, for me, the challenge isn't necessarily getting definition.

It's finding a product that gives me lasting definition, manageable frizz, shine, and enough hold to maintain my wash-and-go without constantly restyling.

What Is The Doux Pop Lock?

The Doux Pop Lock Wash + Go is marketed as a curl-forming glaze designed to provide definition, shine, and frizz control.

The product is part of The Doux's Wash + Go collection and is promoted as a five-day styling option.

Some of the ingredients highlighted in the product information I reviewed included:

Honey
Argan oil
Keratin amino acids
Silk amino acids

These ingredients are associated with conditioning, shine, and hair manageability, although results will vary depending on your hair and the complete formulation.

The product I purchased came in an 8-fluid-ounce bottle.

At the time of my original review, I found prices ranging from approximately $12.99 to $15.99 at retailers such as Walmart and Sally Beauty.

Those are historical prices, not necessarily today's retail prices.

Now, ladies, I must admit something.

When I first picked up that bottle, my immediate thought was:

Is this little bottle really going to last through several wash-and-go sessions?

Because if you have a head full of curls, you already know that eight ounces can disappear faster than you expect!

My First Impressions

The first thing I noticed was the consistency.

Pop Lock is a clear, lightweight glaze with a rather watery texture.

That immediately caught my attention because I tend to enjoy lighter products on my fine strands.

However, I soon discovered that its consistency created a little challenge.

I couldn't easily determine how much product I needed!

Was I applying enough to provide lasting hold? Or was I applying too much?

That became one of my biggest concerns during the application process.

How I Applied Pop Lock

For this particular wash-and-go, I decided to use Pop Lock as my primary styling product.

I did not apply oil or leave-in conditioner beforehand.

Why?

Because several content creators had been presenting it as a one-product wash-and-go solution, and I wanted to see whether it could perform that way on my hair.

The directions on my bottle instructed users to apply the product to clean, wet hair, distribute it from roots to ends using a raking or shingling technique, and then diffuse or hood-dry.

I chose to use my Bounce Curl brush rather than finger-shingling.

Since my curls naturally clump together fairly well, especially with the brush, I wanted to see what additional benefits Pop Lock could provide.

The product distributed easily, and my curls began taking shape.

So far, so good!

But the real question was how everything would look after drying.

The Results: Let's Talk About Those Curls!

1. Curl Definition

I was pleased with the definition.

My curls clumped together nicely, and the product worked well with my styling brush.

However, because my hair already responds well to curl-defining techniques, I cannot give Pop Lock all the credit.

Still, it certainly did not interfere with the results!

2. Shine

Now, ladies, this is where Pop Lock impressed me!

The shine was beautiful!

My curls had a noticeable sheen that made them appear fresh and well-defined.

If you're someone who loves glossy-looking curls, this may be one of the product's more appealing features.

3. Frizz Control

I have an area in the back of my head where my curl pattern is tighter and more prone to frizz.

This is usually one of the first places I examine when trying a new product.

To my surprise, Pop Lock helped keep that area under control.

I was pleased with the smoother appearance.

That was definitely a plus!

4. Drying Time

I had hoped that the product's lightweight, watery consistency might help shorten my drying time.

Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience.

My hair took about as long to air-dry as it normally does with other wash-and-go products.

So, no significant time savings for me.

5. The Crunch Factor

Yes, ladies, there was some crunch!

Once my hair dried, I noticed a firm cast.

Now, a styling cast isn't necessarily a bad thing. It can help preserve curl definition while the hair dries.

However, I suspect I may have applied more product than necessary because I struggled to gauge the proper amount.

A lighter application might have produced a different result.

That's something worth keeping in mind.

Did Pop Lock Really Give Me Five-Day Hair?

Here comes the million-dollar question!

Did I get five full days of fabulous curls without needing to refresh?

Not quite.

I'm accustomed to refreshing or washing my wash-and-go around the third day.

Based on my experience with Pop Lock, I believe three or possibly four days of presentable curls would have been realistic for my hair.

Five days?

I wasn't convinced.

Of course, other naturalistas may have a completely different experience.

Hair density, strand thickness, styling technique, weather conditions, and how much product you apply can all influence the results.

Would I Recommend Pop Lock for 4A, 4B, or 4C Hair?

This is where I want to be careful.

I personally would not make Pop Lock my first recommendation for someone with tighter type 4 curls who needs stronger or longer-lasting hold.

My reason is based on how the product performed on the tighter section of my own hair, along with its lightweight consistency.

However, curl pattern alone does not determine whether a styling product will work.

Some women with 4A, 4B, or 4C hair may absolutely love this glaze, particularly for its shine and frizz-control properties.

Others may prefer a product with a stronger hold or a different consistency.

As I always say, learning your hair is part of the journey!

Let's Talk About the Cost

One of the things I consider when reviewing hair-care products is value.

It's not simply about whether the product works.

It's also about whether the results justify the cost.

With an eight-ounce bottle, I estimated that Pop Lock might last approximately three wash-and-go sessions for me.

That's not particularly economical compared with some of the other products I've used.

And when you're maintaining natural curls regularly, those expenses can add up!

I would rather spend my money on a product that performs well, lasts longer, and consistently meets my hair's needs.

My Final Opinion: Would I Buy It Again?

Let's give Pop Lock its flowers where they're deserved!

What I liked:

Beautiful shine
Nice curl definition
Noticeable frizz control
Lightweight application
Good performance with my Bounce Curl brush

What I didn't love:

Difficulty determining the right amount to apply
Some crunch after drying
No noticeable reduction in drying time
Limited product quantity for the price
Results that didn't convince me I could achieve five-day hair

Would I finish the bottle?

Absolutely!

Would I repurchase it?

Probably not.

Not because it's a terrible product. It certainly isn't!

It simply didn't offer enough additional benefits to replace the products that already work well in my natural hair routine.

And ladies, that's perfectly okay.

Every popular product doesn't have to become a permanent member of our hair-care collection.

My Crowning Glory Takeaway

One of the lessons I've learned over the years is that you don't have to purchase every trending product to achieve healthy, beautiful curls.

Sometimes the best products are the ones you already have sitting on your bathroom shelf!

Natural hair care is not about keeping up with every influencer or chasing every new release.

It's about understanding your hair's needs, choosing products that complement your texture and strand characteristics, and developing a routine that works for your lifestyle.

Summer is a wonderful season for enjoying outdoor activities, vacations, family gatherings, and those beautiful sunny afternoons. But when it comes to natural hair, we want styles that are not only attractive but also comfortable, manageable, and easy to maintain.

And let's not forget those of us who are constantly on the go!

Whether you're heading to the office, attending church, enjoying brunch with friends, or simply running errands, your natural hair can be stylish without requiring hours of preparation.

Today, I'm sharing some summer styling inspiration for our beautiful curls, coils, and kinks!

A Look Back at Summer 2021

When I originally wrote this article in 2021, many of us were beginning to return to our regular routines after spending so much time at home.

And ladies, those hair bonnets certainly had their moment! LOL!

There were days when comfort took priority over everything else.

But as we started heading back into workplaces, social gatherings, and everyday activities, we began looking for simple ways to refresh our appearance.

One hairstyle especially caught my attention: a beautiful variation of the wash-and-go featuring small twists at the front, decorative gold accessories, and loose natural curls in the back.

What a lovely way to combine elegance with simplicity!

And the wonderful thing is that this look remains just as stylish today.

Let's start with the hairstyle that inspired this article.

Imagine beautifully defined natural curls flowing freely, while the front section is gently twisted away from the face and decorated with gold cuffs or hair jewelry.

Elegant without being overly complicated!

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered why your natural hair feels dry, brittle, or difficult to manage, even after applying your favorite moisturizing products?

You are certainly not alone!

One of the biggest challenges on our natural hair journeys is understanding how to maintain moisture. Whether your hair is beautifully coiled, tightly kinked, loosely curled, or somewhere in between, one thing remains true: Water is essential to healthy, hydrated hair!

We spend so much time searching for the perfect leave-in conditioner, curl cream, hair butter, or oil that we sometimes overlook the simplest ingredient of all.

Yes, ladies, I'm talking about good old-fashioned WATER!

But here's something important to understand: Hydrating your body and moisturizing your hair are related aspects of self-care, but they are not quite the same thing.

Let's explore both!

Hydration Begins with Taking Care of You

1. Drink Your Water!

Our bodies need water to function properly, and our hair follicles are living structures that depend on overall health and nutrition.

Drinking adequate water helps support normal bodily functions, including those involved in maintaining a healthy scalp.

However, drinking extra water does not automatically moisturize the hair strands growing from your scalp. Once hair emerges, the visible strand is made of nonliving keratinized cells and requires external care to help manage moisture.

2. Feed Your Hair from Within

Healthy hair growth also depends on getting the nutrients your body needs.

Consider incorporating these nourishing foods into your meals:

Essential fatty acids: Salmon, sardines, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds provide healthy fats.
Protein: Eggs, fish, chicken, beans, and lentils supply amino acids needed to produce keratin, the main protein in hair.
Iron and zinc: Beans, leafy greens, seafood, and other nutritious foods help support normal hair growth.
Vitamins: Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provide important nutrients that support your overall health.

Remember, supplements aren't automatically necessary for healthy hair. A balanced diet is usually the best starting point, and excessive amounts of certain vitamins can actually contribute to hair problems.

Now, ladies, this is where the magic of a consistent natural hair routine begins!

3. Water Is Your First Moisturizer

If your natural hair feels thirsty, one of the simplest things you can do is reach for a spray bottle filled with clean water.

Yes, it's that simple!

For many of us with textured hair, especially tighter 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C patterns, a little moisture can make a tremendous difference in manageability.

Try this simple hydration routine:

Lightly mist your hair with water, concentrating on sections that feel dry.
Gently distribute the moisture using your fingers.
Apply a water-based leave-in conditioner suited to your hair's needs.
If desired, finish with a small amount of cream or oil to provide lubrication and help reduce moisture loss.
Style your hair gently, avoiding unnecessary pulling and manipulation.

One word of caution: Constantly soaking and drying your hair can create additional stress on fragile strands. Refresh your hair as needed rather than assuming more water is always better.

4. Understand the Difference Between Moisture and Oil

Here's something I wish more women understood early in their natural hair journeys:

Oil and water are not the same thing!

Oil can soften, lubricate, add shine, and help reduce moisture loss. However, most oils do not hydrate dry strands the same way water does.

Applying heavy oils repeatedly to hair that already feels dry may leave it greasy without resolving the underlying problem.

My personal preference, especially when working with fine, low-porosity strands, is to begin with a lightweight, water-based leave-in conditioner and use oils sparingly.

Remember, your hair doesn't have to be coated in products to be healthy!

5. Turn Down the Heat!

Hot water may feel wonderful during a shower, but excessively hot water and harsh cleansing routines can contribute to dryness.

Try washing your hair with comfortably warm water instead.

Also, pay attention to your shampoo. If your hair consistently feels rough or stripped after cleansing, consider using a gentler formula between occasional clarifying washes.

Not every sulfate or silicone is harmful. The important thing is choosing products that work for your hair and scalp rather than avoiding an ingredient simply because it appears on a popular list.

6. Protect Your Hair from Unnecessary Damage

Healthy-looking, moisturized curls are easier to maintain when the outer protective layer of the hair, called the cuticle, is cared for properly.

Excessive heat styling, rough detangling, chemical overprocessing, and tight hairstyles can contribute to damage and breakage.

What About Low-Porosity Natural Hair?

Ladies, let's talk about something near and dear to my heart!

Low-porosity hair often takes longer to become thoroughly wet because of how readily its surface allows water to penetrate.

Some of us also have fine strands, meaning heavy creams and thick butters can weigh our hair down.

If this sounds familiar, try applying a lightweight water-based leave-in to damp hair in small sections.

You may discover that less product gives you softer, bouncier curls!

And remember, not everyone with low-porosity hair has fine strands. Hair porosity, strand thickness, density, and curl pattern are different characteristics.

Learning how your own hair behaves is one of the most rewarding parts of the natural hair journey.

On days when your curls need a little encouragement, try this easy routine:

Step 1 — Mist: Lightly spray your hair with water.

Today, I'm sharing something particularly special to me. It's not another product I discovered while browsing the beauty supply store or watching YouTube reviews.

This time, I'm talking about something I created myself!

Over the years, my natural hair journey has taught me the importance of understanding ingredients, recognizing what my hair needs, and developing a routine that encourages healthier-looking, manageable hair.

And sometimes, ladies, the product you're searching for is the one you decide to create yourself!

How My Ayurvedic Hair Oil Began

My interest in Ayurvedic-inspired hair care grew from exploring traditional herbs, natural oils, and the beauty of botanical ingredients.

I wanted a versatile oil blend that could complement a natural hair-care routine while helping soften, lubricate, and add shine to the strands.

I also wanted something that could be used on both natural and chemically processed hair, depending on individual needs.

After researching different oils and herbs, I began experimenting with my own botanical infusions.

And from that process, Crowning Glory Coils & Kinks Ayurvedic Hair Oil was born!

What's Inside My Botanical Blend?

One of the things I love about making my own hair oil is having the opportunity to select the ingredients.

My original formula brings together botanical oils such as olive, grapeseed, coconut, jojoba, neem, and avocado.

When my granddaughter was scheduled to have her hair braided, I found myself searching for a heat protectant that would work well on her natural hair.

Since I have not used heat on either of our hair in over a decade, I was a little cautious and honestly unsure of what to expect. I wanted something affordable, easy to use, and gentle enough to help prepare her hair for braiding without leaving it heavy or greasy.

During a trip to Walmart, the first product that caught my eye in the heat protectant section was Aussie Hair Insurance Heat Protecting Shine Spray. I had never used anything from the Aussie line before, so this was a completely new experience for me.

Have you ever heard about a natural hair treatment that sounded so promising you simply had to try it for yourself?
Well, ladies, that's exactly what happened when I discovered the rice water challenge!
As someone who enjoys researching natural hair care methods, trying new products, and discovering ways to keep my curls healthy, I became intrigued by the growing excitement surrounding rice water.
Women were talking about stronger hair, fewer knots, increased shine, and even improved hair growth.
Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me!
I wanted to know whether something as simple and inexpensive as rice water could make a noticeable difference in the condition of my natural hair.
So, I decided to take the challenge!
And today, I'm revisiting that experience, sharing what I noticed, and discussing what we now know about this popular DIY hair treatment.

What Exactly Is Rice Water?

Rice water is the cloudy liquid produced when rice is soaked or rinsed in water.
As the rice sits in the water, some of its starches and other water-soluble compounds are released into the liquid.
Rice water has a long history of use in traditional beauty routines, particularly in parts of Asia.
In recent years, it has also attracted attention throughout the natural hair community.
Why?
Because many naturalistas began experimenting with rice water rinses in hopes of improving the appearance, manageability, and overall condition of their hair.
But here's something important to understand:
Rice water is not a scientifically proven miracle treatment for hair growth.
Although laboratory research has explored certain rice-derived compounds, there is limited clinical evidence demonstrating that homemade rice water rinses make human hair grow faster, repair damaged strands, or prevent hair loss.
That doesn't mean everyone who enjoys using rice water is imagining the results.
It simply means we should separate personal experience from scientifically established benefits.
And that's exactly what I want to do with this article.

Why I Decided to Try Rice Water

When I originally researched rice water, I came across discussions about inositol, a compound naturally associated with rice.
Some sources suggested that rice-derived ingredients could help reduce friction between hair strands and improve manageability.
Now, ladies, that caught my attention!
As naturalistas, we know how important gentle detangling and reducing unnecessary breakage can be.
And if there was a simple treatment that might help my strands feel stronger or easier to manage, I was willing to investigate.
I didn't want to rely only on the excitement surrounding the treatment.
I wanted to see how my own hair responded.
So I gathered my rice, water, and a container and began experimenting.

My Original Rice Water Challenge

When I first started my challenge, I used a simple method.
I placed a handful of uncooked rice into a container, rinsed the rice, and added clean, cool water.
I then covered the container and allowed the rice to soak overnight.
By the next day, the water appeared cloudy.
I also noticed that leaving the mixture sitting could eventually produce a fermented smell.
At the time, I had read that some people added orange peel or aloe vera to change the scent.
However, looking back, I recognize that unpleasant odors can also signal unwanted microbial activity.
An important update: I no longer recommend leaving homemade rice water fermenting overnight at room temperature. Homemade mixtures are not preserved or microbiologically tested, and adding fragrant ingredients does not make them safer.
For anyone interested in experimenting with rice water today, I would recommend a freshly prepared, short-soak version instead.

How to Prepare a Simple Rice Water Rinse

If you're curious about trying this treatment, here's a more cautious approach.
What you'll need:
2 tablespoons of uncooked rice
1 cup of clean drinking water
A clean bowl or container
A strainer
A clean applicator bottle, if desired

Step 1: Rinse Your Rice

Begin by rinsing the uncooked rice thoroughly to remove surface dust and debris.

Step 2: Add Fresh Water

Place the rinsed rice into a clean bowl and add approximately one cup of fresh drinking water.

Step 3: Allow It to Soak Briefly

Let the rice soak for approximately 15–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
The water may become cloudy as some of the rice starch disperses into it.

Step 4: Strain the Liquid

Remove the rice and transfer the liquid to a clean container.

Step 5: Use It Promptly

Prepare only enough rice water for one application and discard any remaining mixture. Avoid storing it for extended periods or intentionally fermenting it.
Remember, a homemade rice water rinse is not sterile or preserved. Stop using it if it develops an unusual odor or appearance.

How I Applied Rice Water to My Natural Hair

During my original challenge, I incorporated rice water into my regular wash-day routine.
I generally washed my hair first and rinsed it with warm water.
Then I applied the rice water to my strands.
Sometimes I poured it directly over my hair from a jar or bottle.
Other times, I used a spray bottle to distribute the liquid.
After applying it, I rinsed my hair.
My original routine included using rice water approximately once a week, which was also how often I typically shampooed my hair.
Today, I would encourage anyone trying it for the first time to be more conservative.
You might begin with a single short-contact rinse after shampooing, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water and your usual conditioner.
Avoid applying it to an irritated or damaged scalp. If you experience itching, irritation, unusual stiffness, or excessive tangling, discontinue use.
And remember, there is no established research-based frequency for homemade rice water treatments.
Your hair's response should help guide whether the experiment is worth continuing.

What I Personally Noticed

Now, ladies, this is the part that made the challenge interesting!
After incorporating rice water into my routine, I began noticing some changes in how my hair looked and felt.
Here is what I documented in my original article.

1. My Strands Felt Stronger

One of the first things I noticed was that my hair seemed to feel stronger.
I appreciated the way my strands behaved during handling and styling.
Of course, the sensation of stronger hair doesn't necessarily mean the internal structure has been repaired, but it was a noticeable part of my personal experience.

2. I Experienced Fewer Single-Strand Knots

Now, if you're a naturalista, you know how frustrating those little fairy knots can be!
During my challenge, I noticed fewer single-strand knots.
I can't say with certainty that rice water alone caused the change, because conditioning, detangling, styling, and trimming habits can all influence knot formation.
Nevertheless, it was one of the improvements I recorded.

3. My Hair Appeared Shinier

Who doesn't appreciate beautiful, healthy-looking shine?
My hair appeared to have more sheen during the period when I was using rice water.
That was another observation that encouraged me to continue experimenting.

4. I Noticed More Length

I also documented what appeared to be increased hair length.
However, I want to make an important distinction.
Length retention and faster hair growth are not the same thing.
Hair may appear longer because of less breakage, reduced tangling, different styling techniques, or less shrinkage.
Without controlled measurements, I couldn't determine whether rice water affected growth itself.
Still, at the time, I was pleased with the changes I observed.

Is Rice Water Good for Every Natural Hair Texture?

Not necessarily!
One lesson I've learned over the years is that natural hair care is never one-size-fits-all.
Whether your hair is 3C, 4A, 4B, 4C, or a combination of textures, your curl pattern alone doesn't determine how your hair will respond to a treatment.
Strand thickness, porosity, hair condition, and styling habits also matter.
For example, my hair is fine and low porosity.
I've learned that products and treatments that leave deposits on my strands can sometimes make my hair feel coated, stiff, or less manageable.
Because rice water contains starch, it may not produce the same experience for everyone.
If your hair feels rough, tangled, or unusually stiff after using it, that is a reason to stop rather than continuing in hopes of achieving someone else's results.
And please don't assume that more treatments automatically mean healthier hair.
Sometimes the simplest routines work best!

Rice Water vs. Regular Conditioning: Which Is Better?

Here's something I want to emphasize.
Rice water should never replace a dependable hair care routine.
Regular cleansing, appropriate conditioning, gentle detangling, and protecting your strands from unnecessary friction remain important.
A well-formulated conditioner is designed to improve properties such as softness, lubrication, and combability.
Homemade rice water, on the other hand, varies in concentration and composition every time you make it.
That makes its results less predictable.
If you enjoy experimenting with natural ingredients, think of rice water as an optional addition to your routine rather than an essential step.
And if your regular products are already giving you healthy, manageable curls, there is no reason to feel pressured to change everything!

Would I Try the Rice Water Challenge Again?

Looking back at my original experience, I can understand why I was so excited about the rice water challenge.
I noticed improvements that I appreciated, and I enjoyed exploring a simple DIY hair care technique.

Would I consider trying a freshly prepared rice water rinse again?
Possibly!
But I would approach it with realistic expectations, careful preparation, and attention to how my hair responds.
Most importantly, I would not depend on rice water to stimulate hair growth or repair damaged hair.
Healthy hair care involves much more than one ingredient.

Ladies, if there is one message I want you to take away from my rice water experience, it's this:
Your natural hair journey is about discovering what works for YOUR crown.
What worked for me during my original challenge might not work the same way for you.
And that's perfectly okay!

Ladies, let's talk about something that many of us with natural hair have experienced.

The winter hair blues!

You know what I'm talking about!

One minute, our curls are looking beautiful, soft, and full of life. Then the temperature drops, the wind starts blowing, and suddenly those gorgeous curls seem to have a mind of their own!

LOL! What happened?

Well, ladies, winter can certainly present some challenges for our natural hair, particularly when we're trying to maintain moisture, reduce tangling, and protect those delicate ends.

And if you're anything like me, you want your hair to look beautiful without spending hours styling it every morning.

Let's talk about keeping our crowns healthy and manageable when the weather turns cold.

Why Does Natural Hair Feel Drier During Winter?

During colder months, outdoor air often contains less moisture, while indoor heating can create a particularly dry environment.

These conditions can make maintaining comfortable, manageable hair more challenging.

And ladies, let's not forget our winter accessories!

Wool hats, knitted scarves, and heavy coats may look beautiful, but repeated rubbing against our hair can contribute to friction, tangling, and breakage.

This is especially important for tightly curled and coily textures, which may be more vulnerable to mechanical damage from rough handling.

The answer isn't to abandon our favorite winter accessories.

It's to make a few thoughtful adjustments to our hair care routines.

1. Moisture Is Still the Foundation

Ladies, just because summer is over doesn't mean we can forget about conditioning our hair!

During the winter months, I pay particular attention to how my strands feel and behave.

If my hair begins to feel rough, difficult to detangle, or unusually brittle, I know it's time to examine my routine.

Start with a gentle shampoo suitable for your scalp and hair needs.

Follow with a moisturizing conditioner that provides enough slip to detangle without unnecessary pulling.

A leave-in conditioner can also help improve manageability between wash days.

And remember, oil alone does not moisturize dry hair.

Oils may help lubricate strands and reduce moisture loss, but they cannot replace a conditioning routine.

The goal is to find products that work with your hair rather than using everything on the shelf.

Because ladies, sometimes less really is more!

2. My Winter Wash-and-Go Dilemma

Now, here's where I can speak from personal experience!

I've always enjoyed a beautiful wash-and-go.

There's something wonderful about seeing your natural curls and coils spring into shape after cleansing and styling.

But during one particularly challenging winter, my beloved wash-and-go routine simply wasn't cooperating with my work schedule.

Between the colder temperatures, drying time, and the effort required to maintain my style, I knew something had to change.

And isn't that what our natural hair journeys are about?

Learning to adjust as our circumstances change!

Instead of continuing with a routine that wasn't working for me, I began exploring protective styling options.

3. Protective Styles Became My Winter Friends

Ladies, sometimes your hair needs a little vacation from constant manipulation!

For me, braided styles and wigs became useful alternatives during the workweek.

They allowed me to spend less time styling my hair every morning while keeping my natural strands tucked away.

But here's something important.

A hairstyle is only protective when it is installed, worn, maintained, and removed gently.

Tight braids, heavy extensions, irritating adhesives, and excessive tension can damage hair and strain the scalp.

When wearing wigs, I prefer to think about what's happening underneath the unit, too.

My natural hair still needs cleansing, conditioning, and regular attention.

And if the style causes pulling, soreness, or irritation, something needs to change.

Ladies, beauty should not require sacrificing the health of our hairline!

4. Satin-Lined Hats Are Worth Considering

One of my favorite winter hair care ideas is choosing hats with a smooth satin or silk lining.

Traditional knitted hats and wool fabrics can create friction against our strands.

A smooth lining may help reduce snagging and rubbing.

You can also wear a comfortable satin scarf or bonnet beneath a suitable winter hat if it fits securely without excessive pressure.

That way, you can stay warm while giving your beautiful curls a little extra protection.

And who says we can't look stylish while doing it?

5. Don't Forget Your Ends!

Our ends are the oldest portions of our hair.

They have experienced years of washing, styling, detangling, and environmental exposure.

During winter, I encourage you to be especially gentle when handling them.

Avoid unnecessary tugging, use conditioner to help with detangling, and pay attention to persistent splits or tangles.

If your ends are noticeably damaged, consider an appropriate trim.

Remember, split ends cannot be permanently repaired by applying oil or conditioner.

Those products can help smooth the hair temporarily, but damaged ends may still need to be removed.

6. A Simple Winter Hair Care Routine

Now, ladies, you know I believe in making routines practical!

Here's a straightforward approach that can be adjusted to your individual needs.

Wash Day: Cleanse your scalp, condition thoroughly, and detangle gently in sections.

Styling Day: Apply suitable leave-in and styling products. Choose a wash-and-go, twist-out, braid-out, puff, or low-tension protective style based on your schedule and preferences.

During the Week: Pay attention to how your hair feels. Refresh with an appropriate product when needed rather than automatically adding more layers of oil.

At Bedtime: Protect your hair with a comfortable satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase to help reduce friction.

And don't forget to give your scalp some attention.

A healthy routine involves caring for both your scalp and your hair strands.

7. What About Wearing Wigs During Winter?

I want to return to wigs for a moment because they became such a practical part of my own winter routine.

Wigs offer wonderful styling versatility.

You can experiment with different lengths, colors, and textures without making permanent changes to your natural hair.

But remember, ladies:

A wig is not a substitute for caring for the hair beneath it.

Avoid tight foundations and prolonged tension along the hairline.

Make sure the wig fits comfortably, and maintain a cleansing and conditioning routine for your natural hair.

Also, whenever possible, allow your scalp a break from styles or attachments that cause irritation.

The goal is versatility without unnecessary damage.

8. Winter Doesn't Mean Giving Up Beautiful Hairstyles

One of the things I love about natural hair is its versatility.

There are so many ways to express ourselves!

A beautiful twist-out can transition from a casual afternoon to an elegant evening.

A low puff can look polished with the right accessories.

A braid-out offers another way to enjoy stretched curls.

And an appropriately fitted wig can provide an entirely different look when you feel like changing things up.

Ladies, you don't have to sacrifice your personal style simply because it's cold outside.

Sometimes winter is the perfect season to experiment with something new!

9. Remember That Every Head of Hair Is Different

Here's something I've learned throughout my natural hair journey.

What works beautifully for another woman may not work the same way for me.

Hair density, strand thickness, porosity, curl pattern, and styling habits can all affect how our hair responds to products and routines.

That's why I encourage you to pay attention to your own hair.

If a product isn't working, don't feel obligated to continue using it because everyone online loves it.

And don't assume you need an elaborate routine to have beautiful natural hair.

Sometimes consistency and gentle handling make the biggest difference.

Looking back at my original winter hair experiences reminds me just how much our routines can evolve.

There was a time when I relied heavily on wash-and-go styling.
