9 Easy Ways To Never Get A Virus

In 20 odd years of using computers, I can safely say that I’ve never been a victim of any computer virus, and yet I’ve also never run anti-virus software. It’s a curious fact that the people who are most worried about viruses get them more often. With a little basic training you can completely avoid the problem of viruses and malware, so you can calm down and enjoy the internet!

1. Beware of Fake Download / Play Buttons:

Usually these are targeted on torrent sites or anything with a download keyword on it, so users are fooled into clicking it and downloading something completely unrelated. It’s a dirty trick, and the only way to defeat them is to be careful and think twice before hitting the download button. It helps if you already know the site in question, because you should be able to realize the location of the download button has changed – but what about new users?

Check the status bar. Though this can be faked with JavaScript, I’ve noticed these ads in particular don’t usually do that. If the domain in the status is different to the site you’re on, it’s probably a malicious advert.

Another method is to use logic. If you have download some software for example, and it’s showing a PLAY NOW button, you should know instantly that’s completely unrelated. The visual style is a giveaway too.

2. Don’t use Internet Explorer:

In every hacking convention so far, Internet Explorer has always been the first to fall. It has been claimed that a fresh install of XP with IE6 will be infected within minutes of browsing the internet. While the latest IE9 may have toughened up a little, the fact is that IE is specifically targeted by hackers on a daily basis, precisely because the number of people who don’t even consider switching browsers makes it a profitable target. Go download Chrome.

3. Hang Up on Cold-Calling Indian Technical Support Agents:

In the UK at least, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of scam telephone calls from supposed Windows technical support agents. Here’s how it starts:
A: Hi there, I’m from (indecipherable) and we’ve registered an error from your Windows – have you been experiencing any issues with it lately?

At this point, 90% of people will be thinking their Windows is broken and yes, of course they have been experiencing issues, because who doesn’t have Windows problems? You’ll then be walked through how to give this called complete remote control access to your PC, where they perform some BS technical checks and try to get you to purchase a support contract. Check out this video so you know what to expect.

4. Ignore Pop-Ups That Have Anything To Do With Security or Viruses:

These are difficult if you are actually running anti-virus software, because they pop up and fool you into thinking your AV software has found something.

For a start, ignore anything originating from your browser – which you can check by completely closing it down. As a general rule of thumb, ignore any and all security related messages if you didn’t initiate them youself – by clicking on your AV software’s SCAN button, for example. If you get a message from an AV app on windows you never installed, it’s likely you’ve already been infected.

5. Avoid Public Torrent Sites Like The Plague:

Most public torrent sites are teething with malware and fake torrents. I don’t care what you download, but make sure you do it from a private tracker. They’re a few exceptions to the rule, some of which we’ve covered in the best new torrent sites.

torrentbutler.eu - because if the film is here, it’s been checked already.
piratebay.org – with millions of users, the comment system is usually full of reports of fake files or viruses – but stick to uploads from trusted power users (ones with a little pink or green skull and crossbones next to them).

Private trackers are only open to members, so it’s sometimes hard to find some that are accepting new registrations. We wrote before about how to find trackers that are open. Be warned though, private trackers don’t take kindly to leeching, and if your ratio drops you can get banned.

6. Fake Torrents That Need a Specific Video Player:

If you’ve ignored my advice and downloaded some movie from a public torrent site, there’s a very good chance it’s a fake. These are difficult to detect because the file is usually padded to be about the right size, but upon playing them you’ll see a message that you need to download a new video player because it’s encoded specially or words to that effect.

Don’t download movies from public sites, and use VLC player to check a file. VLC player has every codec under the sun built-in, so if it doesn’t play correctly in that, it’s not a real movie.

7. Don’t Open Anything Forwarded To You:

While you can be as careful as you like, your friends might not. If you have the kind of friends who forward you fun little flash games packaged up in .exe files, or anything other than a simple picture, just delete them.

8. Don’t search for common utilities in Google:

We covered this a little while ago – the worrying trend of malware ridden sites ranking highly in Google for various common utilities. Thinking you are downloading the best video player around, you actually get a virus infected copy instead from a dodgy third-party site. The solution – Have no fear, we have an extensive list of the BEST software for Windows (and now Linux, with Mac OSx one in the works – not that osx or linux users need to worry about viruses…) with verified links that you can trust. If you’re unsure of a particular app – where to download it officially or if it’s worth it – you can always ask around on our helpful tech questions community.

9. Create a non-admin account for general use and family members:

If you allow yourself and members of your family to use the administration account, you are asking for trouble. Creating a limited privileges user account protects you somewhat by preventing anything run by that user (malicious or not) from doing any permanent damage. Even though YouTube is used regularly to share comedic clips, it’s without a doubt, a rich pool of educational videos . You’ve seen many articles on our site listing some amazing YouTube channels to become more educated in a variety of general topics, to learn cool dance moves, even some channels for non-native speakers to learn and perfect their English, and dedicated channels for Linux enthusiasts that learn about Linux news and issues.

Since it never hurts to learn something new, especially a skill set like computer programming in different languages, we will go over some of the best channels that will introduce you to the world of programming. Let’s look at which channels made the cut.

thenewboston is a truly great channel with an immense collection of programming tutorials. The official website contains a list of all the tutorials made so far, which are well into the thousands (about 1500 videos as of this writing). Not only does it have tutorials for various programming languages, but it also has videos on building computers, tutorials for software like Dreamweaver and After Effects, as well as 3D-modeling software. The website now also has plans to present tutorials for a variety of other topics, like Math and Biology. Since all these tutorials are free, thenewboston is probably the greatest source of video tutorials for people interested in beginning programming languages. Bucky, the instructor behind most of the videos, explains concepts like a peer, so his tutorials are definitely very easy to follow and catch up to.

It was 2008 September when I entered the Online field through a webmasters forum called as the Digital Point which gave me all the basics and insights of the Search Engines business. Also this was the time when i started to understand howsearch engines work and how we can optimize our websites to rank better in the search. Finally after around 5 years of full-time experience I have a full time team of SEO’s, Content Writers who manage around 100 different websites and make sure that all of these rank in better placements in the Search. This article is a continuation to our article of Career as a Full Time Blogger – Scope Returns Future.

Whenever we plan to hire a SEO, we need to ensure that the guy has practical experience rather than having some basic knowledge on On-page optimization. Hence this field can pay you a lot of money if you have real good hands-on experience and knowledge, and pay you nothing if you have just some bookish knowledge. Its always important to have a great experience on everything related to website management before applying for a job.

Scope as SEO Employee / Job

If you plan to work for some company as a SEO Employee or Consultant then there is not much scope because this field is not just about submitting a website to search engines or web directories but its about understanding how you could really make a website rank into the top and how does all this stuff work. Most people have a idea in their mind that SEO is a very easy job which can be handled easily following which they apply for a placement in different companies to get a quick job.

This is one area where i personally feel that Asian countries like India are very poorly rated because Indians get paid on an average of around Rs 95,771 – Rs 232,129 per year which is somewhere in the range of $2000 – $5000 depending on different factors like Years Experience, Employer Type, City, Company Size, State or Province, Certification etc

If you are in United States then the chances are better because companies offer better pays for SEO Professionals which range $32,312 – $49,257 [via payscale.com] making the overall income atleast 10 times more than what Indians are paid. This is mainly because if the higher budgets and bigger campaigns run for companies in order to attain higher rankings in the Search.

Once someone opts for these jobs, the next available option would be of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Manager which offers them with salaries upto $70,000 per year plus the work includes managing a team all of who work on the optimization campaigns. These payouts are quite better than the jobs offered in different industries whole the work scope just increases every year.

One of the Major disadvantage of getting into this field is that if you do not update yourself with the latest trends then you could loose your job easily because the whole work depends on the performance and without results the deals or work would not continue.

Now the advantage in this job or work is that you can also earn in six figures being a Search Marketing Consultant or a SEO Director leading a bigger team and handling the whole agency. There are many other Pro’s or Con’s with this which you can find yourself if you are into this industry for atleast a few years.

How Do Search Engines Work?

Assume that. your reading a book and want to find references to a specific word in the book. What do you do?

You turn the pages to the end and look in the index! you will then locate the word in the index, find the page numbers mentioned there and flip to the corresponding pages.

Search engines also work in a similar way.

Search engines are constantly building and updating their index to the www. they do this by using "spiders" that "crawl" the web and fetch web pages. Then the index along with where the words came from.

When someone searches for "pest control services" the search engine already has a list of web pages that refer to "pest control services". The only thing left to do is to sort the web pages in order of relevance. This is done based on a number of key factors.

Crawl then Index:

When a search engine spider visit a website it reads all the content and follows all the links internally, and then it decides what to index the webpage for. This is why it is SO crucial to have search engine optimised content on your website. If there is no search engine visible content on your website (mostly meaning content in HTML), the search engines won’t know what to index your website for and you might be indexed for keywords that are not related to your business.

All Things Digital is the online extension of the prestigiousD: All Things Digital conference, where annually since 2003 we've invited the leaders of the digital revolution, the top technology and media figures, to discuss where things are heading.

The conference has been a big hit, but it has only been open to about 500 people a year. With this free Web site, we hope to open the conversation to everyone.

AllThingsD.com is a Web site devoted to news, analysis and opinion on technology, the Internet and media. But it is different from other sites in this space. It is a fusion of different media styles, different topics, different formats and different sources.

Because the site is wholly owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, we aim to adhere to the journalistic standards of the best of the mainstream media. But, because it is run autonomously as a small online start-up, we aim to exhibit the fresh thinking and nimbleness of the best of the new media. We want to be first, and sassy, but also well sourced and accurate. We will offer lots of opinion and analysis, but plenty of fact as well.

Are you a student? If so, how many times have you forgotten an assignment submission date or the date of an important test? When this happens, you keep on wishing for something that would remind you of such important dates ahead of time. With Remind 101 you get just that.

While you can use your online calendars to add email reminders for upcoming tests and assignments, you have to repeat the process for each upcoming test and assignment. Remind 101 aims to make this easier.

It is a free student reminder tool currently in beta. It lets you add your university to your account and then add the courses you are taking. The tests and assignment dates are pre-defined in the course outline therefore they are automatically added to your account. You then simply have to set the type of reminders you want to receive: you can choose to be emailed or sent a SMS message prior to the date of the exam or assignment.

Since the site is currently in beta, it has support only for Michigan State University and has only the courses for that institution. Hopefully support will soon expand to other universities.

Collaborate On Google Maps In Real Time (Android App)

VideoMap by Christophe Coenraets is a brilliant application for Android phones that helps people collaborate on Google Maps in real time.

People at different locations can open the app on their Android devices and start marking on the map using the various whiteboard tools that are available. Each user sees the changes made by other users instantly. A video chat feature is available too.

To get started, you just need to create a username and a room and share the URL that’s generated automatically with your friends.

The nice thing about the tool is that it works on your desktop as well as on your browser. The above screenshots have been taken from the browser based version. The interface is simple and easy to use.

If you are having a tough time understanding the nitty gritty of your mortgage, like the total interest you’ll end up paying and the monthly payments you’ll need to make, then you might as well use this simple web based tool called the AmortizationLoanCalculator.

It asks you for the principal loan amount, the loan term and the annual interest rate and returns a table that’s an amortization schedule showing your periodic payments, what part of it is going towards paying the principal and the interest, and the overall interest you pay in the lifetime of the mortgage.

As you can see in the above screenshot, the table is pretty easy understand. The C Prin and C Int stand for cumulative principal and cumulative interest respectively.
