Here there's no grass to satisfies our 4 horses so we have had to make our own slow feeders.

These consists in a barrel of 250Kg with some windows in the wall, near the bottom. We bought a solar charger, posts and electric tape last week and will put it up this weekend. We're starting with half the fenced field and will expand the track after we've had a chance to see it in action. My track will be small and simple at first, with an area for loafing, a watering area and several hay feeding stations. I'm not going to incorporate a gravel or sand area because my animals spend lots of time on gravel in their paddocks or our driveway. They will be turned out on our remaining 40 acres for some time every day, depending on the amount of grass in the fields. Our larger field has a variety of natural features, trees, logs, etc. If my first version of a Paddock Paradise works well I hope to put in another track and incorporate many natural features. My first version is an experiment and an attempt to convince my husband that a track paddock is worthwhile.

I have an obese miniature donkey and a chubby Icelandic horse, plus a standard donkey who's carrying a little bit extra weight and an Appaloosa horse of normal weight (hallalujah!). I want to encourage my donkeys to move around more, as exercise is the only way I'll be able to safely reduce my mini donkey's weight. I haven't had him tested, but I suspect he is insulin resistant as he gains very easily and loses very slowly. So far he hasn't developed laminitis but that possibility is always in the back of my mind. I need a place where he can and will move around but not be able to eat pasture grass. I'll take pictures of my track set-up as I go along. I have greatly appreciated seeing what other people have done with their tracks.

Hi Kay,

Absolutely thrilled with your posit...

Hi Kay,

Absolutely thrilled with your positive comment - JoAnn has created an excellent film of her PP hasn't she! I hope she has noticed this message that you have left.

PP can be done on a budget and cost-effective solutions are one of the elements we are exploring in this series. I have personally found that electric fencing was the most cost-effective way of creating the track.

Our natural boarding page has links to other Paddock Paradises and maybe the Paddock Paradise Wetpaint site can help you as there are lots of people on there with Paddock Paradises.

Would you be willing to contribute yourself if you decide to create your own Paddock Paradise? The more people that contribute the more horses and owners we can help!

Thanks again and keep in touch!
Frances - NHR
