Prized for its beauty and versatility, gold is the classic setting for most jewelry. It’s also the most malleable of all metals — so soft it can’t be used for jewelry in its purest form.

The standard measurement of gold is the karat. Pure gold is 24 karats, meaning 24 out of 24 parts are gold. To increase its strength, gold is combined with other metal alloys. For example, 18K gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other alloys; 14K gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other alloys. 10K gold is more durable, with 10 parts gold to 14 parts other alloys.

Alloys used with yellow gold include copper and silver. Rose gold is created by combining gold with large amounts of copper, while green gold results from mixing gold with copper, silver and zinc. When creating white gold, pure gold is combined with copper, zinc and nickel or palladium.

Since antiquity, yellow has been the color most associated with gold. White gold is a beautiful complement to exceptionally white and bright diamonds. Also, white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium, a shiny metal that increases the whiteness and strength of gold. Sometimes, white gold is confused with platinum, though they are entirely different metals. White gold and platinum vary in strength, resistance to scratches and shades of white.

In some jewelry pieces, white and yellow gold are paired together, producing a beautiful two-tone look. You can also find yellow, white and rose gold pieces or white and rose.

At Jennifer Miller’s stores, she seems to deal mostly in feux jewelry, which she claims is ideal for those who travel, and don’t want to risk the loss or damage to their important belongings.

Creating The Diamond Cupcake

Diamond wedding cakes have made the rounds but doesn't the humble cupcake deserve a shot at diamond dazzle? Mervis Diamond Importers says they are the first to create a diamond cupcake. The cupcake is topped with eight ideal cut round brilliant diamonds around its circumference, and a two carat Asscher cut diamond in the center for a total value of $30,000. The cupcakes (there are two like this) will be on display at Mervis Diamond Importers, for their "Cupcakes and Wedding Rings" trunk show on May 1 and 2. Why did Jonathan Mervis decide to do this? He's heard that question a few times and says that he sees it from a couple of different angles: "Firstly, I'm having fun. But secondly, I'm in the business of helping make engagements and weddings as stunning and memorable as possible. On the big wedding day when money is no object, I think a diamond-topped cupcake could be the ultimate in luxury. I've already had a few phone calls inquiring about more "affordable" diamond cupcakes, and I could foresee a situation where diamond cupcakes become the 'it' thing for brides."

He has applied to the Guinness Book of Records to see if he can get listed as the world's first diamond cupcake. But beyond the obvious publicity spin, Mervis also has an interesting point about the connection between sweets and luxury treats and the salutary benefits of indulgence. He asks if, in a time like this "when so many Americans are in the poor house, can it be healthy to dream for a moment and let our minds play with images of decadent diamond cupcakes?"

The name comes from the Damascus steel used to make the blade. While the technique for making the True Damascus encountered during the Crusades has been lost since the 1700s, modern pattern welding techniques have produced similar blades. The 128 layers of steel in the Damascene Razor produce a rose and torsion pattern much like those seen in True Damascus blades.

GoldBar features gilded and polished surfaces galore, but its main design feature are the 3,000 gold-covered skulls grouped throughout the space. The skulls were inspired by the catacombs in Paris and the Crypt of the Cappuccini Monks in Rome.
