Having just read Blake's collaborations with J.A. Konrath (Serial Killers, Stirred et al) I was expecting another dose of "turn off your brain and enjoy", over-the-top dose of blood-letting, gore and mayhem. What I actually got was even better, a true page turner of a mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing right up to its enjoyably delirious dénouement. With, I might add, its fair share of blood-letting and mayhem to boot, but slightly toned down here and possibly the better for it.

To give away too many details would truly be a disservice to the story and author so I'll just give a brief outline of the set-up and leave it there.

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke wakes up in hospital following a car accident in the picture perfect, white-picket-fence town of Wayward Pines, Idaho, with little memory of who he is or how he got there. As he slowly pieces together the events that led him there it becomes clear that the town holds a dark secret and leaving may not be a welcomed option by its inhabitants...

It's this mystery that keeps the pages turning, along with the increasingly erratic behaviour of the townsfolk. I quite literally could not leave this book alone until I knew all its secrets. It's very well written too with believable dialogue and characters and flows freely from the opening to its end.

The author includes an afterword nod towards the classic TV show Twin Peaks as "Pines" inspiration but, as has been noted in other reviews, the spirit of The Twilight Zone inhabits its pages more predominantly, which is, of course, no bad thing at all.

This is a fantastic, roller-coaster of a read for those who enjoy a good thriller and suspending their disbelief.

I have already lined up a few of Crouch's other works to devour and have every confidence they will be just as much fun to read.

The Perfect Retreat was gripping! A few pages into the first chapter I was hooked - and I didn't put the book down until I had finished the very last sentence. I spent a glorious afternoon immersing myself in this book, the characters and their world, and it was brilliant.

The characters were fantastically written, whilst reading the story I felt as though I knew them, and I genuinely cared about what happened to them, which compelled me to carry on reading. My favourite character was Kitty Middlemist, she opened her home and her heart to Willow and the children, and she was keen to do her best for others - she shone from the page and I was so pleased to have `known' her character! The other characters were equally as interesting to read about, I enjoyed getting to know them, their personalities and reading about their journeys.

I would describe The Perfect Retreat as the ultimate escape book! It has everything you could want in a book - sex, scandal, secrets and a fantastic plot line! But as well as the smiles and fun, Kate Forster highlights a few serious topics in here too so there really is a bit of everything. Above all this is a delightful and fun read and everyone should buy it!

I laughed with the characters, I cringed with them, I felt for them when they were going through hard times and struggling to find their way, and all throughout I was cheering them right on until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I must admit I was quite sad to finish it. This is a brilliant novel from Kate Forster and I'm already looking forward to her next release!

Right off the bat. This e-book is short (about 25 pages on my Kindle for PC). At £0.99 it was hardly going to be too long. It is basically pulled straight from the pages of his NYTimes column. Saying that though, this e-book never misses a punch and relentlessly grinds down the anti-thatcher rhetoric to a mere nub.
Definitely an interesting read for anyone on either side of the Thatcher debate (assuming said person is reasonable and open to the opinions of other people).

It's got to be said. Debora Geary has a talent for tugging on the ole' heartstrings. I adore her Modern Witch books, and they've only improved as the series has progressed.

If you've never read any of the Modern Witch books, and fancy reading something a little lighter, a lot funner (funnier too, but I know what I mean here!), and with much more heart than most, as well as a generous sprinkling of witches (male and female) and a strong tie to family, then these books are for you. Just go get the first book. You'll love it, I'm sure.

If you've not read all the books yet, especially A Celtic Witch, then don't read on - I'll unfortunately have to spoil things a little (otherwise I'll not be able to talk about this short story at all!).

Ok. With that dealt with we can get on with things.

Marcus has met the love of his life, Cassie, and has gone on the road with her on the eponymous Swordfights & Lullabies tour. This book is set at the very end of the tour, and is only a quick catch-up followed by some of Debora's signature awesome sauce. I nearly cried. Twice. I'm not usually like that with books, but Ms. Geary's aforementioned talent has an unnerving habit of making it happen.

If you already love this series, you'll buy this book regardless. I just want to add that it doesn't disappoint in any sense, and it's going for a little over a dollar (a little under £1!) on amazon for your kindle.

It's a great bit of story, good value, and I can hardly wait for the next book which is due out in June.

This is the first book I've read by this author in fact; before Rachelle offered me this ARC (in exchange for an honest review) I had never heard of her meaning that when I started this book I didn't really have any expectations which turned out great really because I enjoyed this book immensely.

Saying that though this is going to be a short/mini review because the book focuses mostly on Lucas and Maryanne so there's not much else to write about without sounding like I'm repeating myself.

Rachelle has pulled off the impossible or should I say the not so possible. What is it you ask? She's managed to bring back the good guy (and make us like him) in a time where most books and people prefer the bad boy. Lucas is sweet, genuine and an out & out nice guy. You can't dislike like him, trust me at one point or another you will find yourself thinking "Awwww! What an adorable guy!"

Although I will say this, there were times when I thought Lucas was too good. He never really got mad even when there were times where I thought he should have got angry. Where anyone would have got angry, it was unrealistic.

The path to Lucas and Maryanne's love/relationship was not smooth by means. They were so on again, off again that I found myself thinking "will they EVER get together?" This is one of the things I rate this book for. It's not all fairy tales and princesses in real life and the book shows this. If you think about it, it was just the right thing to do for this book it fits perfectly.

This book made me laugh and made me cry in equal measure.

The pain that Paul Connolly must have experienced throughout his childhood was palpable.

And although part of me was repulsed by the violence and the malevolence that Paul displayed, another understood and urged more of the same in order for him to gain some sort of recompense from the ills of a society that let adults abuse the positions of trust they were put in.

Although Paul was on the whole spared the fate that some of the children endured at least he has survived to tell his story and has since become successful in building a career and a family.

I kept questioning why these children were not listened to and how the system failed to protect them. I only hope that this book is read by all those now involved in protecting vulnerable children, the message of which should reverberate for some time.

This book was a superb read and one that I would thoroughly recommend albeit one that will take you on an emotional roller coaster from heartbreak and anger, to laughter and elation.

When Michele Gorman's debut novel Single in the City was released by Penguin in 2009/2010 I was dying to read it as I love books about expats. However, sadly, the book didn't work for me at all and I didn't bother to read the novel's sequel Misfortune Cookie last year. However when Michele got in touch about her new book Bella Summer Takes A Chance, I thought it sounded like a really good read and I happily accepted a copy to review. I'm really pleased I did because I really enjoyed Bella Summer Takes A Chance, it seems a world away from her debut novel, and I was really surprised by how quickly I devoured it.

Bella Summer Takes A Chance is fairly self-explanatory when you read the title. Bella Summer, known to all as B., has found her life has stagnated - her life with boyfriend Mattias isn't what she expected it to be and her dreams of being a musician has fallen to the wayside so when B. finds herself asking Mattias if they're really in love one night while watching a movie, it sees a massive change in Bella's life as for the first time in a decade she sees herself trying to make more of her life. She's sees herself taking a chance, with a group of fabulous friends - Kat, Clare, Faith and Fred - behind her every step of the way.

I found myself very involved in Bella Summer Takes a Chance, right from the first page. Yes, the setup for B's big life change is perhaps not the best lead in - asking if the man beside you is in love with you just because a rom-com character has done it, but that's easily ignored as B's life is indeed in need of a shakeup and whilst its not as earth-shattering a shake up as Hannah in Single in the City who moved all the way from the USA to England (as did B, actually), B's own shake up sees her striving to make herself a better life and become a serious musician and I loved B's journey. I really enjoyed seeing her grab the bull by the horns and make music her number one priority, backed all the way by the best friends a girl could ever ask for. I thought the characters were excellent, B really made an impression on me - I admire anyone who takes their life and turns it upside down just to try and make it better.

The writing was also excellent, normally when you do read a self-published novel (and to be fair it ain't just self-pubbed novels) you expect typos, grammatical errors etc. but Bella Summer Takes A Chance has been very well edited. The only disappointment I had was the romance part of the novel, or lack thereof. There's a great debate in the novel as to whether friendship-turned-to-love can ever compare to pure love-at-first-sight love but while B went on many dates the romance and happy ending side of things was severely lacking. I had my eye on who I wanted her with and I was massively disappointed she gave him the whole like-him-as-a-fried spiel. I personally thought they'd have been perfect together. But overall I really liked the novel, and I must give a massive shout out to Marjorie, a lady B visits in a home who has such stories to tell! I loved her to bits. I can't wait for Gorman's next offering, I definitely recommend Bella Summer Takes A Chance.
