Happy Chinese New Year!

My favorite holiday that came a tad too early this year. I would have prefer a longer break between Xmas to CNY just so the anticipation to the buildup would be sweeter.

Cheesy new year songs, red red red everywhere, every home stocked with food and a time to get together with family and friends. Whats there not to love!

And yes, an excuse to buy more clothes (you have to wear new clothes during CNY)

And yes, CNY is the time to wear color! Its bad luck to wear black anyway so if you have something in your closet you have been wanting to wear but not dared to do so because its oh so bright. Now is the perfect time.

Enjoy CNY guys. Time to go back to stuffing my face.

Portugal: Evora/Lisbon

And on the 5th day of my trip to Europe, we headed down to Portugal.

The bus ride from Spain to Portugal was flanked by huge plantations of cork trees and we had a fun time spotting the "bleeding trees". Basically the bark of the tree is harvested to make cork once every 9-12 years(!) and the harvested area is copper-ish in color.

I am not sure why but there is a very distinct air of despair in Portugal.Maybe the economic crisis has hit them harder than Spain (or the Spanish are able to mask their misery with fiestas..) Anyway everything seems more run-down, less romantic here

Visited the Chapel of Bones at Evora. The interior is literally covered with human skulls and bones (supposedly of monks). There are 2 full skeletons hanging form the wall, one child one adult. Pretty creepy place.

Written above the entrance, translated to "we bones that are here, we are waiting for yours" see what I meant by creepy?

Spent the afternoon walking around Evora. The city square is filled with tiny shops (touristy). Food in portugal is not bad, lots of baked salted cod. Cheaper than Spain too (about 20% cheaper)

Overall, an interesting place but I doubt I will ever come back

The statue of Jesus greeted us when we drove into Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and known as the city of 7 hills. Our hotel was unfortunately on the outskirts of the city and we had to take a tram + a ferry to the city center. It was pretty cool taking the local public transport though, talked to a few locals, discovered that the tram conductors only know about 800 euro a mth (pretty dismal considering unemployment benefits go up to 700)

It is the oldest district in Lisbon, and so quaint and cute. Where surrounding this district are the bustling sounds of a busy capital, Alfama remains stuck in time. Cute old Portuguese amble around, chatting to one another over laundry. The cynic in me wonder if they were actors hired by the tourism board for tourists to gawk at hah

Kilo Restaurant/Cafe

Kilo is located in the ultimate hipster building.

Its neighbors include Loysel's Toy and a freaking Ukulele school

Getting to Kilo is not easy, located at Sam Tat building next to Kallang River its so 'ulu' I would advise anyone to just take a cab.

Food here is straight-up fusion (Japanese-Italian) and the items on the menu include sushi, pizzas, pastas and even beef tartare. I do like the decor, very cozy and slightly eclectic. This place is tiny though so reservations are a must.

Ribs + potatoes

The ribs were delicious, tender sweet falling-off-bones good.

Iberico ham + rocket pizza

With a combi like that, how can it not taste good right?

Salmon with chicken skin sushi.

Decent and a safe choice I guess

Pork belly with purple mashed potato

Bad picture but the mashed was cleverly shaped to look like a baked potato.

Caramelized duck leg

This was a tad too sweet, the sauce tasted very chinese though

best dish of the night

The squid ink rice. Mix the egg in and you get a glorious dish bursting with umami flavors of the ocean

We loved it so much we ordered another round

Angelhair pasta with ebiko cream

Too creamy for me

Unagi linguine

Overall, Kilo was pretty lovely and I will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu

I once saw a pleated leather skirt in zara but it cost $299 and I couldnt bring myself to buy it.

Didnt stop me from thinking about it constantly though

2012 is the year for reading

So the boy gave me the kindle fire for Xmas and wow, reading has never been so easy!

Any book that I come across, just a simple search and dl on the net and instant gratification, no more searching high and low :)

Since I have gotten the kindle, I have already read 3 novels

I must admit I was slightly disappointed, I guess the expectations were just too high.

One of my favorite author + the hype surrounding it.

The plot was pretty interesting but it got bogged down by the many details and dragged far too long. Perhaps Murakami started explaining too much? Sometimes it might be better for readers to explore certain mysteries on their own.

Wind up bird still remains my all time fave

This book was voted #1 book on Goodreads so I just had to read it.

Plus I am into YA dystopian books, because it is pretty entertaining and easy to read. And I like my characters young and pretty hah

The thing I dislike about YA books - why is every damm story a freaking trilogy?! This make every book so short and I hate ending on a cliffhanger.

Restaurant Week- Gaia Ristorante

long overdue post, went to Gaia over at Goodwood park hotel for Restaurant Week in Oct.

Unusual breadstick arrangement, I wonder if the more traditional chinese will consider it extremely inauspicious?

Deep fried sardine with onion and mixed salad. I am not a huge fan of sardine but this was a surprisingly pleasant dish

I just noticed the ridiculous painting behind the boy lol

Fried ham w ricotta cheese

I must admit the cheese bits made this dish look quite unappetizing but the salty ham+ cheese goodness packed a great punch of flavor. Delicious

tagliatelle with softshell crab. Cant remember much about the pasta dish so it must have been well,pretty unmemorable.

Oven-baked Cod fish

Braised chicken

Both mains were melt-in your mouth tender and flavorful.

Ended the dinner with a decent tiramisu.

Although it was quite ironic that the only dish I didnt enjoy in an italian restaurant was the pasta, overall this was one of the better Restaurant Week experiences that I have had. Kudos.

December just zooms by doesnt it?

I think it is officially one of my fav months in the year just because work is slower in pace, everyone is in holiday mood (and generally happier) and of course, the get-togethers, parties and celebrations!

Attended a Christmas party where we made awesome salad (how to go wrong with rocket leaves), mini sliders and truffled mash. Everything was so delicious and we ate till we burst

Met the cutest dog at the party. Hes incredibly obedient and just sits and stares at you with loving eyes. HOW NOT TO LOVE!

How to go viral

Viral. A term getting close to being overused (and I must say misused). Especially in where I work. "I want this to go viral!" Yeah well you cant make something go viral, or can you?

Recently I cant open up facebook without seeing pictures from the album "the 31 boys of Abercrombie & Fitch", basically featuring close ups of the devastatingly gorgeous TOPLESS models hired to stand outside the new A&F store, basically just for everyone to ogle. And now, we can ogle from the comforts (and privacy) of our own home. Little wonder it has gone viral eh?

Some things I learn from A&F's campaign.

1 - We must have very very very few cute guys in Singapore, which explains the huge hoo-haa over these men. And hence

2. Singaporean girls are very very deprived.

Spain: Seville Cathedral

The Seville Cathedral in Andalusia, Spain is the 3rd largest in the world.

Its absolutely gorgeous, inside and outside.

Inside is filled with intricate wood carvings that resemble marble, lovely stained glass windows, gigantic pipeorgans and other symbols of religious worship that takes your breathe away. Theres just something about the grandeur and amount of reverence and love in this place that makes you feel pious. How I wish we had cathedrals like these in Singapore.

I felt like I was on some Dan Brown movie set ala Angels and Demons

We went up to the bell tower which was like 35 or so stories, fortunately instead of stairs, they installed ramps so going up was pretty alright. Apparently the nobility rode donkeys up to the tower.

Oh it was 36 degrees that day, so the climb up and down reduced us into a wet mess.
