What are YouTube Content Ratings?

When a partner uploads a show or movie that does not have an official content rating (i.e. MPAA or TV rating), youtube ask that the content owner rate any mature content in these five categories: Language, Nudity, Sexual Situations, Violence and Drug Use.
Each of these categories has three levels that the uploader can select when uploading. To make it easier to understand these ratings youtube note the different levels with distinct colors.

GREEN represents no mature content
YELLOW represents mild mature content
RED represents mature content and will be restricted to viewers 18 and older

The rating descriptions are as follows:

Language

No strong language: GREEN Content rated No strong language should be free of any strong, coarse, or other potentially offensive language. Even mild cursing such as "hell" and "damn" or words that are bleeped should be rated as L or L+.
L: Strong language : YELLOW | L Content rated L may contain some expletives and profanity; however such words should be infrequent and not used in a sexual context. Content with expletives and profanity that have been bleeped should be rated L as well. An L may also indicate suggestive dialog, sexual innuendo, or other discussion of adult themes. Other L-rated speech may include the expression of strong views and opinions that viewers are likely to find offensive, disrespectful, or otherwise controversial.

What is Safety Mode?

Safety Mode gives users the option to choose not to see mature content that they may find find offensive, even though it's not against our Community Guidelines. When you opt in to Safety Mode mode, videos with mature content or that have been age restricted will not show up in video search, related videos, playlists, shows and movies. While no filter is 100% accurate, youtube use community flagging, hide objectionable comments and porn image detection to identify and hide inappropriate content. Safety Mode on YouTube does not remove content from the site but rather keeps it off the page for users who opt in.

How do I use Safety Mode?

How to control the comments posted on your channel

To remove someone's comments from your Profile:

Navigate to your Channel Page.
Select the Feed Tab.
There is a View button located above your activity history. If you click it, you will see an option to view Comments Only.
Hovering over any comment will allow you to take action on a comment (for example, like deleting or flagging for inappropriate content / spam).

You can also choose to moderate comments before they appear on your channel. This will allow you to view all comments posted to your channel and give your seal of approval before they appear publicly on your Channel. In order to do this, just follow the tips below:

Click your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen
Select My Channel from the drop down.
Click the Settings button located under the Post a Bulletin box.

You'll then be able to choose from the following options:
- Allow all Channel comments to appear on your Channel automatically

YouTube supports stereo 3D video: video containing two streams, one for each eye. In order for a video to be viewable in 3D on YouTube, it must be filmed in 3D. Depending on the way that you recorded the video, you'll have to follow one of the following two steps:

(Recommended) I have a 3D camera, camcorder, mobile phone or gadget

A 3D camera works by recording video from two side-by-side cameras and then outputs frames with images from both cameras. Many 3D cameras place 3D information in the video file itself, which can be detected by YouTube or set manually, as explained in the Setting up 3D video section below.

I don't have a 3D device

While having a 3D camera makes creating 3D video a lot simpler, you can still create 3D video for YouTube without one. For more information on how to create 3D video with two side-by-side cameras, take a look at 3D editor guide.

Setting up your 3D video on YouTube

In order for a video to be viewed properly in 3D, YouTube needs specific information, including:

indicators that identify the video as 3D
signals that explain how the Left-hand and Right-hand videos are placed in the frame (for example, side by side or top and bottom)

If the video was recorded using a 3D camera, it will usually have the signals above (you should see a 3D icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the player). However, if it doesn't, you'll need to specify that the video is 3D by following the steps below:

Log in to your YouTube account
Go to your video once it's been uploaded
Click Edit Video Detail above the video
Select 3D Video on the right-hand side of the banner
Choose the appropriate placement of the two videos from the various options.

Setting the 3D metadata using tags (i.e. "yt3d:enable=LR” or “yt3d:swap=true") is no longer supported and should not be used for newly uploaded videos.

Troubleshooting

1) The video is twice as wide as it should be.

The video is displayed with the same aspect ratio as it was uploaded. If you placed the right-hand and left-hand videos into a single video, make sure that you scaled the final video to half it’s width (see image below). This is to comply with 3D video standards and to make sure that your video is viewed correctly with 3D devices.

Editing videos on the video watch page

You can edit your uploads directly from the video watch page. Here’s how:

Select the video that you'd like to edit (you do this by clicking the video thumbnail)

You’ll then be taken to the video watch page. If you look above the video player, you’ll see a toolbar. This is the Editing Toolbar. You will use this to make edits to the video.

On the toolbar you'll see various options:
- Edit video detail
- Edit annotations
- Edit captions/subtitles
- AudioSwap
- Insight Stats
Click the option which corresponds to the action that you’d like to take. You'll then be directed to the section where you can start editing. Make your desired edit to the video (for example, add Annotations or an AudioSwap track, update the video's title or thumbnail image, adjust the embed settings, etc.)

Don’t forget to click the “Save changes” button to save the edits that you've just made to your video

YouTube's Video Editor

The Video Editor is a free tool in your YouTube Account which allows you to edit various clips and produce an entirely new, edited video. Here’s what you can do with the Video Editor:

Combine multiple videos that you’ve uploaded to create a new, longer video
Trim at the beginning and/or end of your videos
Add a soundtrack from our AudioSwap library
Create new videos without worrying about file formats and publish the new video to YouTube with one click (no new upload is required)

To get started, go to TestTube and click "Video Editor" (or visit www.youtube.com/editor).

1. Adding video clips in the Video Editor

Any of your uploads used in the Video Editor to make the new video are "clips". Your new video can be made up of various clips (1-7 clips permitted).
Once you publish the combination of clips, you’ll have a brand new video (with a different URL, view count, etc.).

Getting Started:

In the Media Picker, select the clip(s) which you’d like to edit.

Click the "plus" icon (+) at the side of the clip. Clicking the "plus" icon will add the clip to the storyboard. You can also drag and drop the clip down to the storyboard.

Once you’ve added your video clips to the storyboard, you’ll be ready to edit the video clips. You can learn how to do this in the next section (Editing individual clips).

2. Editing individual clips

If you’d like to shorten any of the video clips, you can do so in the "Clip Editor". To select a clip to edit in the Clip Editor, just hover over the clip and click the "Scissors" icon.
You’ll now see that particular clip appear in the Clip Editor. From here, you can trim and shorten the clip.
In order to shorten the clip, select the grey clip trimmer at the beginning and/or end of the source video's frames (see image below). Drag the grey trimmer to the section of the clip which you’d like to trim.

When you’ve selected the desired portion(s) of the clip to cut, click the "Save" button. By clicking the "Save" button, you’ll save the changes that you've made to the clip, and the (now shortened) clip will appear back on the storyboard on the Video Editor main page.
You can edit/shorten all clips which you’ve added to the storyboard in the Clip Trimmer. You edit one clip at a time. In order to trim and shorten each of the separate clips, just follow the steps listed above and edit the clips in the Clip Trimmer. Don’t forget to click "Save" when you’ve finished editing the clip.

Clip Trimmer Tips and Tricks

The edge inside the grey bars (which you drag to shorten the video) is what counts. The clip will be cut from the point within the grey bars, not the point outside the grey bars.

You can trim a clip to a 15th of a second. For longer videos, if you click the nudge buttons (arrow buttons), this will nudge the trimmer forwards or backwards a 15th of a second from its current position

When you add a video clip to the storyboard, the video which appears in the player is the actual video from YouTube.com. This video loads and skips backwards and forwards like any YouTube video. When you add a clip to the Clip Trimmer however, you will first need to wait for the clip to load before being able to skip back and forth.

3. Adding an audio track

You can add a new audio track to your the video in the Video Editor. Here's how:

In the Media Picker, click the "Audio Tab". You’ll then see audio options appear. These audio tracks come from YouTube’s AudioSwap library.

You can browse the AudioSwap tracks by genre, artist and typing a query into the AudioSwap search bar.

To preview the audio tracks listed, hover your mouse over the audio track in question and click the "Play" button. A preview will then play for you.

To add an audio track to your clips, click the "plus" icon (+) on the audio-track. This will add the audio track to the storyboard. Similarly, you can drag and drop the audio track into the audio section of the storyboard.

You cannot trim or edit the audio track in Editor. The audio track will span the entire length of the video clips and will stop when the video ends. You also cannot select particular sections of the audio track: the audio will start at the beginning and will be cut off when the video ends.

To delete the audio track entirely, just click the "X" icon on the audio track on the storyboard. You can also replace the audio track by dragging another track from the media picker down to the storyboard. The existing track will be replaced immediately with the new track.

Please Note: When you add a new soundtrack, the audio track on your video will be replaced permanently. After you change your video's soundtrack to one from the AudioSwap library, the video won't be eligible for revenue sharing. In addition, advertisements may be displayed on videos that contain soundtracks from the AudioSwap library.

4. Final steps and publishing your new video

Now that you’ve added and edited your video clip(s) and audio track, you’re almost ready to publish your new video. As a final step, you just need to add the new video’s title in the title field. Once you’ve done this, click "Publish". Your video will then start to be published.

Congratulations - you've finished!
The video will take a while to process (just like any normal upload). You can check the video’s processing status on the my_videos page of your Account. Your new video will not have the same URL as any of the clips used to create it. The new video has an entirely separate URL of its own.

Ensure the following two options are checked:

Claim this video (your video will also need to be "Monetized"
Allow in-stream advertising for this video (this will also enable pre-rolls)

Enabling/Disabling your content for ads on existing videos

If you wish to enable or disable ads on existing videos, log into your partner account, select a video, and then choose “Edit Video”. At the bottom of the screen, in the "Advertising Options" section, you will see an option that looks like this:

Make sure to select the correct boxes to enable the types of ads you wish to show. If you want to disable ads, just deselect the above boxes.

There are two ways of linking your YouTube account to AdSense once you have been approved to become a YouTube Partner or have been invited to the Individual Partnership Program:

You already have an active AdSense account:

Sign in to your YouTube account (Note: sign in on a separate browser if your YouTube login email address is different from your AdSense login).
Click on the link in the notification box appearing on your homepage to complete your application.
Go through the tutorial/guidelines.
When asked to associate an AdSense account, enter your AdSense account information in the appropriate field.
Accept the Terms of Service and confirm.
Sign into your AdSense account. (Again, use a separate browser if your YouTube and AdSense login email addresses are not the same.)
Allow YouTube to access your AdSense account. This is done under the "Home" tab, in the "Account settings" section and then under "3rd-party access."

Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for your YouTube and AdSense accounts to link. Once you have submitted your AdSense information, please ignore any requests for you to link the two accounts. You should receive an email from YouTube once the accounts have been linked successfully.

You don't have an active AdSense account yet:

Sign in to your YouTube account.

When asked to associate an AdSense account, select the option to create a new AdSense account.
Fill in the application form and submit your application to AdSense for review. (Note: It typically takes 3 business days for your application to be reviewed.)
