WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A POLYMATH?

Polymath is a word you are more likely to hear in a spelling bee than in everyday conversation. The reason why most people don't employ the word has less to do with vocabulary and more to do with the existence of polymathic people.

A polymath is a person with a wide range of knowledge or learning; a renaissance man. The term Renaissance Man originates in Italy during the Renaissance and is based on the belief that the capacity for a persons achievement, development, and growth is limitless. Competence in several areas of knowledge in addition to athletic achievement, creative arts, personal and professional accomplishments is the goal and that is within your reach to grasp.

Essentially, a polymath strives to reach their full potential and become the greatest they will to. The ambition is to grow every aspect of their being and strengthen their skills in every facet possible.

The Universe has blessed me with several abilities and my interests are several. It would be a great disservice to Nature to focus on only one area of my being to the neglect of others. Although I enjoy acquiring knowledge in the form of erudition and formal education I refuse to pursue academic credentials at the sacrifice of retiring from athletics. This is why I want to play at U of T in the fall.

"Jack of all trades, master of none." Nonsense. Maya Angelou, a noted polymath herself (poet, journalist, dancer) herself said that cliché "is the stupidest thing I have ever heard." Excellence in one area does not take attention away from competence in other areas but rather enhances competence in complimentary areas.

Polymathism and the idea of being a renaissance man is an ideal which I have grown to embrace and defines my lifestyle as I work to become the greatest man I can be learning, growing, and achieving all that I will mentally, spiritually, and physically.

ONE HUNDRED HOUR WORK WEEKS

Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Shawn Parker, you, and I having something in common. We all have twenty four hours per day to do whatever we want. The difference between all of us however is how we use our time.

There are 168 hours in a week. Our success is dependent upon how we use those 168 hours. I must become a billionaire. If you want to be a billionaire too then you must do what billionaires do. I study self made billionaires and superachievers and what I have gleaned is that billionaires are risk takers who have incredible drive and focus. They take persistent action everyday to build up companies they love. Everybody sleeps except for billionaires. Billionaires don't sleep —they rest.

Elon Musk who created paypal, space x and tesla motors gave an interview to vator news where he says he works 80-100 hours per week which is twice as long as the ordinary person. He says this is an important factor which helped him to achieve extraordinary results. Working 100 hours per week instead of only 40 will allow you to achieve in four months what would've taken a year.

Shawn Parker (worth 2.1 billion) was profiled in Forbes magazine whereby the interviewer followed him around for a few days to see how he works. After a long day of meetings, emails, research and working Shawn goes to bed at 7 am only to get back up in four hours to do it all over again.

While reading Bill Gates Speaks: Insight From the World's Greatest Entrepreneur I learned that between 1978 and 1984 Mr. Gates only took fifteen days off of work from leading Microsoft. Bill Gates never slept while he was leading Microsoft. He was CONSTANTLY creating new revenue sources. He was known to fall asleep in his office and continue the next work day wearing the clothes he had been wearing the day before.

Maintaining focus is a key to success. Spending nearly all of your time and energy working is mandatory if you truly wish to accomplish something remarkable in business or any other worthwhile achievement which you are pursuing.

Billionaires don't continue to work for money once they are wealthy but rather because it's fun. In that sense, they approach business as a game in which revenue and profitability are a measure of keeping score.

I wake up everyday at four and begin to work on improving my whole self: my mind, my body, and my soul with three hours of studying, exercise, and meditation.

I'm in love with the fact that I can imagine a reality within my imagination and then put forth the necessary effort to manifest the vision I created inside of my mind. I work one hundred hours every week on making this happen and am thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.

Living Life On Offense

Whatever you want to do, be, or have is possible for you to achieve! Ideas, thoughts, goals and dreams become real when we go after them consistently and persistently.

I am an avid reader who enjoys learning about how people achieved their success. In my quest for knowledge and understanding on the topic of success in business and life I came across the story of Ted Leonsis.

Mr. Ted Leonsis did not start out his professional career as vice-chairman of America Online, and the owner of The Washington Wizards, and The Washington Capitals. However, that is where he ended up after a near death experience happened to him in 1983 which transformed his life for the better.

He was 27 years old when he saw his life flash before his eyes as a plane he was on board made a crash landing. As the plane plummeted towards Earth he made a promise that if he lived he would begin to live his life "on offense" and live boldly for the rest of his life.

In sports the job of an offense is to score goals. To live life on offense means to work on achieving goals which are important to you. The first step to getting what you want out of life is this: decide what it is you want!

With this in mind, Leonsis made a list of 101 Things To Do Before I Die. Twenty plus years later and he has accomplished 74/101 things on his list!

I hope this anecdote has inspired you as to live up to your potential and create a list of what you want to do/be/have before you die.

I encourage you to first re-read the paragraph at the beginning of this post then pull out a sheet of paper, meditate on what you want out of life and begin to craft a list of your own.

The Importance Of Setting Goals & Writing A Plan To Achieve Them

Setting goals and having dreams to achieve requires active thinking about what you want to get out of life and what your purpose here is on this earth. It also requires forethought and the investment of your time, talent, and imagination. The results and rewards you get from setting goals is well worth the effort as goals have a proven track record of ensuring success.

A famous study, conducted at the prestigious Harvard University examined the impact of goal setting on financial success. Researchers surveyed the graduating class of that year to find out if they had clear goals for their future and written specific plans to achieve them--only three percent of them did. Ten years later, researchers interviewed the same class members and discovered that the three percent who had written clear goals were financially worth ten times as much of the other 97 percent of the graduates combined!

What impact will your dreams and writing down a specific plan to achieve them have on your life, family, business and finances?

It is obvious that writing down goals and a plan to achieve them is a great idea. I mean what is the point of going through life aimlessly with no direction? Would you venture on a road trip without a map or without a destination? Probably not.

Take the time now to think about your future, write down your goals and create a plan to achieve them.
