Goodbye Trusted Friend

On the night of October 1, 2010 around 7:30 p.m. a very dear and trusted friend left us. Ok maybe it is not all that dramatic but it is a huge milestone for us. Kylie decided that she was going to be a big girl and threw her beloved pacifier in the trash.! I was in complete and total shock. We have had a few pep talks but they never really went anywhere. I would tell Kylie that she was not a baby and she would pout and take it from my hands and happily put it in her mouth and then climb in to bed. I would roll my eyes and laugh and decide to try again later.

She didn't really start off taking a pacifier. She was like three months in this first picture and that was the first time she kept the pacifier in her mouth for longer than 30 seconds. I was in desperate need because she was breastfeeding but wanting to use ME as the pacifier and I was exhausted and not getting any sleep at night because of it.

These pink and purple ones were the first ones that I bought. They were 6m+ and had little grooves for teething. They were AWESOME! By this time she was a pro and we were all sleeping a lot better.

New ones. :) They lasted like 2.5 seconds. My dog ate the tips off them. I was so mad!

At 1 yr. old we started only giving it to her when she was in bed or in the car for an extended period of time.

Ok. We did have a few cheats at first. haha. Stroll through the mall with a noisy baby, easy fix.

I worried so much while she was using the pacifier because I didn't want to be one of those moms that had a kids that was 4 and still using a pacifier or couldn't talk because they would suck on the stupid thing 24/7. I don't know. Truthfully I think it was alot more about me worrying about what other people thought of me as a mom. But here it is and she is 2 years, 3 months, and 7 days so it is definitely time but I am a little sad. Maybe even a lot sad. So many many nights of bedtimes stories read and sweet little lullabies sung with the rhythmic sound of her sucking her pacifier in the background. It was always such a comfort to her when she was sick or hurt. You could give it to her and it was like it had magical powers she would immediately start rubbing her eyes and moaning sleepily. But more than anything it is the fact that she is growing so fast. In the past two months she is completely potty trained during the day and transitioned to a toddler bed and now the pacifier.

Here is a breakdown of the last three nights (notes from her baby book)

Night One:

7:38pm Threw your pacifier in the trash. I told you it was yucky and that you should throw it away and you walked right in there and did. Wow!! 7:45 Climbed into bed and said "night night Momma" I closed the door and there was no crying. 7:53-8:10 I called everyone freaking out. I just could believe that it finally happened. 8:30 Crying. Had to pee...then back to bed. 9:17 Still awake. 9:56 Up again. Had to poop...then back to bed. 10:15 Crying again. I told you that Kai-lan(her doll) was tired and need to go to sleep...Quiet. 10:32 Whining 10:40 Called Aunt Sandy for moral support. (I went in my room to kinda of separate myself from the situation and let her self soothe,without interfering, which is what she has to learn to do now.) 11:01 Asleep?? 12:30am Ok you had been quiet that whole time and I was finally brave enough to go check. Sound asleep PACIFIER FREE!!! Woo Hoo! I am so so proud of you. 4:03 Awake and screaming. Needed to pee...(theme music to Jeopardy) 4:15 Finally climbed back in bed and asked for the pacifier. I remind you that it is gone that you threw it in the trash. You said "Yucky!" and "I not a baby!" :) 4:24 Fairly quiet. Some talking. 4:28 Singing 4:30-4:56 I dosed off 5 times and was woke up by singing/talking. 7:18 I woke up and went and got you out of bed and you were looking mighty tired little one.

Night Two: **Ok. First nap without a pacifier was unsuccessful. You didn't have a pacifier but you also didn't nap. :( **

8:05pm Layed down with a little fussing. 8:30 Could it be!? Are you really asleep that quickly? 8:33 Confirmed! Yay!! 10:00 All is quiet. I am going to bed. 8:07am I woke up and went in to find a happy well rested Kylie. :)

Night Three: **No nap again today. Is that it? No more naps already? I am worried/bummed about this.**

8:22pm Layed down with some minor fussing due to being overly tired. *ahem* I wonder why? 9:00 Asleep! Now if we could just get the nap thing figured out. 2:36am Crying. Dropped Kai-lan. Went right back to sleep. I believe that Kai-lan is your replacement "lovie."

And what have I done with all the little miraculous sleep makers you ask??...

They are hidden on the tallest shelf in the tallest cabinet in my kitchen. I don't know why but I was not ready to part with them yet. Haha. Go figure. :)

Family time and Kylie's 1st Beach Trip

Trip took place October 9th through the 12th I know, I am yet again behind on my blogging. :)

So we were supposed to go and visit my Aunt Sandy, cousin Mary and her daughter Jade, and 2-Mom in August. Kylie had never been to the beach. I was so excited for her to experience because she likes the bath and loves the pool, the beach was going to be the mother load. Well, August fell through and we couldn't make until the second weekend in October. So needless to say I was bummed. Well, we get there and it was perfect beach weather. Gotta love Texas!

I collected shells so I could do something like this to commemorate her first trip to the beach.

So, this is a recent development. Her "dancing" used to be just bobbing her head and moving her arm as if snapping to the beat. LOL. The other day while I was watching So You Think You Can Dance she started doing this crazy little dance. I don't know if it is the show or if she just really likes "I Like It" Enrique Iglesias' new song but I just knew that I had to try to capture it on video. Hope you enjoy! :)

Hello out there to anyone who might still read my blog.

I would like to try and start again with my blog. With that comes a new name. Formerly "The Young Family" is now "The New Adventures of the Young Family." I tried to come up with something cute and funny. Something that would draw attention to it just being the two of us after my divorce. Maybe something with the words team, duo, ~~couple~~, mother & daughter, etc. but it was important for me to keep the word family. I has been difficult trying to explain and make Kylie understand that family can mean a lot of different things.

So in mid October we went to the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco with Trey's mom. The day did not go quite as expected. Kylie was in a foul mood. :( I was pretty disappointed to be honest with you. This was her first trip to the zoo and I was looking forward to it.

Summer is finally here!!

I cannot recall all the times in the last 5 years that I have heard the phrase Having a baby changes everything. And it is the truth. Even in small insignificant little areas, like before Kylie I LOVED the winter time and really disliked the summer time. And now it has flip flopped, no pun intended. :) Winter means colds and fevers and runny noses. Summer means water and sunscreen and birthdays. This was also the first year we experienced the anticipation of the school year ending and Summer finally getting here. She has been counting down the days until she would get to see Chloe.

Grandmother came and got her four days ago and then made the three hour drive to go pick up Chloe!!!

I am just happy she is on her way home. I talk a lot of talk but really give me a break for an hour that is all I need after that I just miss her. Pray for me when school starts. LOL.

Stubborn stubborn child

So it was back in February and since things have gotten better, but we went through a period of time where Kylie only wanted to snack. My always good eater was turning in to a picky eater. :( And it seemed to be getting worse by the day. We were getting into a food rut. Kylie had always been great at eating vegetables and then wanted nothing to do with them. So one day I made homemade minestrone soup. YUM! It was so good.

See?! Yumm...

Well, Kylie took one look at it and wanted nothing to do with it. And I, knowing where Kylie got her stubborn streak, decided I was going to make her eat it. Maybe not my finest hour. I just wanted her to try it before she declared it "Yuck!" Anyway, so I told her that if she didn't eat for dinner then she'd have it for breakfast.

I felt horrible all day long and had to just keep reminding myself that she was not going to starve herself. I JUST WANTED HER TO TRY IT!!

Finally after a horrendously long day at 5:30pm, a full 24 hours later, she had three bowls of soups, a piece of toast, and then a bowl of yogurt! It was a bad day and I cursed her stubbornness all through out it but when she is older and there is something she believes strongly in I breathe a sigh of relief that she will be well practiced in stubbornness. :)

I just have to say to anyone who reads my blog I am sorry for all my grammatical errors but I think in run on sentences. lol.

So through a friend and fellow blogger's post I fold this article that has since gone viral. It is all over the internet now and with good reason. It is fantastic and I feel hits home with so many moms no matter the age of your children. I mean do not get me wrong I love Pinterest and feel like in a lot of ways it has made me a better mom. But it also made me rethink where my focus is and where I spend my time. I can either sit on the internet and "pin" until my fingers fall off or I can fingerpaint with my daughter. It is the time together that she wants.

Ok I am linking up with OrgJunkie.com's Spring Into Organization post. It is a small change, not like my room redo that took a month. In fact, this only took me like 10 minutes. But what a difference!

1. I finally got rid of expired or un-used items. My sister in law moved in with us while waiting on her new lease to begin in her new town and brought with her a lot of food that we either didn't like or didn't use.

2. I then sorted the like items together.

3. Added a bin for storage bags, foil, cling wrap, wax paper, etc.

4. Then straightened my daughters arts and crafts stuff on the bottom shelf.

WA-LA!!! :)

BTW my friend introduced me to those bubbles on the bottom shelf in the pink bottle made by Billions of Bubbles. They are AWESOME! My kiddo loves them too. The formula is great and you get lots and lots of bubble in just one dip of the wand. And for $1 you cannot beat them!

Today I am linking up with Kelly's Korner Show Us Your Life post, Mom of all Girls. I mean I know that I only have one child but it still counts. I love having a girl. I prayed for a girl. I come from a family of all girls so the idea of a boy kind of terrified me.

She isn't always a girly girl. She LOVES Cars. We have 20 or so from the movies. That is a Cars couch in the background and a Cars apron and chef hat.

Her favorite night shirt belonged to her cousin Draven. (I dislike it but who is gonna tell that face no? lol)

And sometimes she can be quite girly. Her favorite color is pink and she loves anything glittery or sparkly. And always talks about "when I be a momma..." she says. :)

And lastly, Really? Even at the age of three her bathroom looks like this!? (the makeup bag it mine) But I guess I better get used to it as a "mom of all girls"...for now at least. ;)

29 day Organizing Challenge...Finished!

So believe it or not. My room got worse. Our place flooded. Not horrible but enough that our carpets got wet and we had water rushing in and covering the kitchen floor. Pretty crazy stuff. So any decluttering from my previous post (here) is not very evident. But it did get better...

I got rid of 3 bags of trash and clutter from my room. I also found a new home for all the stuff that didn't belong i.e. toys, board games, makeup, medicine, craft stuff, etc.

I dusted and folded a lot of clothes.

And vacuumed this big empty space for...

MY NEW BED!!!!!! :) :) :)

Isn't beautiful?! I love it. And it is the perfect thing to keep me motivated to keep the room clean.

I kinda love leaving to door open to admire as I walk past. And because of the challenge the rest of the house looks pretty great also.

Laura from I'm an Organizing Junkie had questions for us to answer at the end of the challenge:

1.)What space did you decide to organize and why?

I chose the master bedroom because it is the most neglected room in my home. It is the room that I always put last and just shut the door. And it is pretty much a reflection of what I do to myself. I wanted to put myself first for a change.

2.)What steps did you take to ensure you complete the space in the 29 day timeline?

Honestly I under estimated how much time this would take. I mean even when the kitchen gets BAD it never takes as long as I think it is going to. But kitchen gets at least straightened up everyday. Clutter is something entirely different. So really I just made a small to-do list.

3.) What was the hardest part of the challenge for you and how did you overcome it?

Haha. Life. Things out of my control. My room flooded. Set backs. I had to wait on the rain to stop, and the floor to dry, and the carpet guy but I really wanted to complete the challenge. Even if the outcome was no everything that I wanted it to be I didn't want to give up.

4.)What did you do with the "stuff" you were able to purge out of your newly organized space?

A lot of the stuff in my room already had a "home" like my daughters toys and laundry that need to be folded or it was trash. Broken items, stained and torn.

5.)Tell me one of your proudest moments doing this challenge?

This right here. Linking up and proudly saying I finished it!! I was pretty embarrassed to post the before pictures but I knew they would help me get here.

6.) Explain any organizing "tools" used to help you create additional and establish some limits and boundaries? The things that are already in the room. The bookshelves and the laundry baskets. They keep me in check. If the basket is full it is time to do laundry and not wait until it is overflowing and on the floor.

7.)What is the ONE piece of advice you'd give someone else to encourage them on their organizational journey? Expect that it is going to take some time. I would have never given myself a month to complete something. I would have said "THREE DAYS!" and then failed under the daunting task of having it done is 72 short hours.

Get it? Love nest. February. lol. Anyway, yikes what a disaster area. I am so overrun with clutter and chaos. I am a little humiliated to show these pictures but hopefully it will be a driving force to help me. I am participating in the month long challenge over at OrgJunkie.com

Ok normally my ancient burgundy bed is at least made but I just washed the bedding. Yes that is a coffee table not an end table next to my bed. I moved it there to make room for the Christmas tree and it is still there. And then the clothes...

Junk. Crap. Clutter.

And the wires. I hate wires. They are ugly ugly eye sores.

Heaven help me. I hope to have a beautiful loves nest by the end of this challenge.

My husband says he doesn't care what the place looks like as far a decorating but I know he would feel so much better in a peaceful relaxing bedroom after a long day at work. I hope to bless him and bless my home this month.

Potty Post: WE ARE FINALLY DONE!!!!

From her baby book:

Starts Potty Training: 1-14-10(1yr & 6m) "ok so you have shown some interest in using the potty so you now have a potty seat"

Makes pee in the Potty: 3-25-10(1yr & 9m) "Girl! I am one proud mama. :) You have been sitting there for months. Yay! Big girl!"

Makes poop in the Potty: 4-26-10(1yr & 10m) "You didn't seem to notice that it happened, and then you seemed disgusted. lol"

Sleeps without Diaper: 7-7-11(3yrs) "We tried. It did not go well. Back to diapers for a bit." 8-27-11(3yrs & 2m) "DRY!" :)

Daytime Trained: 9-15-10(2yrs & 2.5m)"You are still wearing a diaper for nap and bedtime but are doing great during the day."

Fully Toilet Trained: 8-27-11(3yrs & 2m) "Woo hoo!!" You woke up dry and have been going strong. No accidents. No getting up really you just go before bed and then go when you wake up. Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!"

Ok. So here are my notes now. We didn't actually start potty training until 8-26-10 (2yrs & 2m) Just because she showed interest and had even gone in the potty doesn't mean anything. I think she was too young. But I think that prep time and the potty seat always being in the bathroom was crucial because she was never scared of the toilet. It was common and comfortable.

I was amazed how easily she potty trained(at least day trained) when I waited until she was ready. She was completely trained during the day in like 2 weeks. And that means car trips, public restrooms, and everything in between. I think if I started in January 2010 when she first started showing interest I would have been beating my head against the wall for 6 months. Sure she might have been trained at little bit faster but it doesn't seem like it would have been worth it.

It was a super scary thing for me to give away my diapers but I did it. There are certain things that really worry me like her getting sick and having diarrhea and not having diapers to fall back on but just like anything in parenthood I will cross that bridge when I get there.

Poop!

We also did a lot of just panties at home in those first two weeks. It made the dash and run a lot easier.

Today we got up and it was a beautiful windy 75 degree morning. In comparison to the HOT 108 degree days we have had recently it was heaven. My friend Nettie called and asked if we wanted to go to the p-a-r-k.(Lol. We always spell it so we don't say it and then plans fall through because the kids get really upset.)

We have been trying to teach her what "favorite" means. She associates it with favorite color. So when I ask "What is your favorite ___?" She always says a color. haha. My favorite part is her face at the end. :)

I love cooking with my crock pot! I haven't use it as much in the past but I plan to really start. There is just something so great about it being 9 a.m. and not only knowing what you are making for dinner but all your work is out of the way.

Another blog I follow, Kelly's Korner, is having her readers link up to share their best crock pot recipes! Awesome!!! I'm always looking for really good crock pot meals!

Taco Soup with Pinto Beans (by Janie Steele, Moore, OK)
1 lb. ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
3 14-oz. cans pinto beans
14-oz. can tomatoes with chilies
14.5-oz. can chopped tomatoes
15-oz. can tomato sauce1 pkg. dry Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix
1 pkg. dry taco seasoning
15.25-oz. can corn, drained

*Brown beef and onions in skillet. Drain.

*Combine all ingredients in slow cooker.

*Cover. Cook on Low 4 hours, or until ingredients are heated through.

Makes 10-12 servings

It is so easy. I made it last week and we LOVED it! I will warn you, though, it makes a freaking ton. Next time I might try my hand at freezing half of it. But it makes good left overs. With a couple of tortilla chips and a sprinkle of cheese it is like a fancy frito pie. Enjoy! :)

Since school started for all the great little ones in our life Miss Kylie is no longer happy with being three. She has informed me that she wants to be five and that she needs a backpack. I told her well you have to be five and you have to know how to spell your name. And she looks at me and says "K-y-l-i-e...Kylie." You should have seen my face. I think the next two years are going to fly by.

I vowed to start blogging more. Every night if I can. I think the hardest part is going to be coming up with post titles.

Today we did a little running around with my friend Lynnette and her kiddos. While waiting for them to come pick us up I was taking some pictures and shot this one :

I love Target. If not for any other reason, their carts are the best.

Oh and these beautiful red clearance stickers. I love those too. I got these books today. Yes,Kylie is a little young for chapter books but I would like to start reading them to her before bed soon and for $1.12 I couldn't pass them up.

Then we came home and had some lunch and then Kylie reluctantly took a nap. Once she did fall asleep she was out for like an hour and a half. And get this, she woke up with dry panties!! Yay! I hope it continues because she has been telling me that she is ready to sleep in panties. So we will see how that goes.

F-I-V-E! I am in shock! The 13th was my niece's birthday. It doesn't seem like five years have passed since she was born and now she is going to be starting school this year. Her party was at Gatti Town this year. Kylie had a really good time. We got them hopped up on sweets and then sent them home with Grandmother for a few days. :) Yay!

We got her this. I love these dolls! I want to get this one for Kylie only the full sized doll. I like them but most people say they are creepy.

I also got this dress for her and made a hair bow to go with it. She loved the bow. She hugged it. :)

And just for fun this is the hair bow I made for Kylie to wear to the party.
