That result will have no impact on Sunday, though both teams will have taken useful tips on board from that match. WT20 : Umar Akmal found guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for a level 2 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during his side's 16 runs defeat against Sri Lanka in the first semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday.

Umar was found to have breached Article 2.2.11 of the code, which relates to "conduct contrary to the spirit of the game".

Umar pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The incident took place in the 17th over of Pakistan's innings when Umar, who was the non-striker, ignored both on-field umpires' request and went ahead to change his batting gloves.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, while explaining his decision, said: "Respect for the umpires is integral and is something which we always emphasise and encourage.

"In this incident, Umar showed blatant disregard to both the umpires' requests, which was offensive and unacceptable from an international cricketer and contrary to our unique spirit, hence a level two charge was laid.

"Umar, when pleading guilty, apologised and regretted his action."

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Simon Taufel and Rod Tucker, third umpire Ian Gould as well as fourth official Steve Davis, all from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires.

Players of a bygone era who would have been a huge boon for any T20 side

Twenty 20 is the rage of the day, and modern cricketers are growing up with their techniques tuned to this instant variety of the game. However, there have been quite a few huge hitters in the pre-Twenty20 history of the game who would have been ideal for this format.

Listed below are some famous hitters of their day – men who would have ruled the T20 scene with their ability to whack the ball, but did not play in the modern age. Most of them doubled up with other all-round skills as well.

In the list, we have ignored prodigiously fast scorers who would no doubt have been successful in T20, but were not exceptionally hard strikers of the ball.

George Bonnor - He had a magnificent physique, standing six feet, six inches tall and weighing 17 stone. With his golden hair and flowing beard, he was often likened to a reincarnation of the Viking gods. Often called simply The Great Australian Hitter, he once struck a ball over the pavilion at Kennington Oval, drove another 170 yards, and hit a mistimed drive so high that he and his partner ran three before it was caught.

Gilbert Jessop – This scientific hitter stood at only five feet, seven inches. From his low crouching stance, he erupted like a quantum of uncoiled energy the moment the ball was released. He jumped out as if on spring to the fastest of bowlers, driving them mercilessly, devastatingly hard and often high, forcing them to shorten the length; and then he would cut and pull them with equal heartless brutality. “The sight of Jessop merely going forth to bat would cause a cricket crowd to wonder what on earth was about to happen to the game. Before he had walked purposefully half-way to the wicket, four fieldsmen were to be seen journeying to far-flung positions, going there as though by instinct and not official direction,” Neville Cardus described in Close of Play. He could also bowl as a genuine fast bowler, and was a greyhound at cover-point.

Jimmy Sinclair – Batting at the Wanderers, Sinclair was reputed to have hit the great George Lohmann into the neighbouring Railway Station three times. Playing for a weak South African side, he was good enough to score three centuries and pick up 63 wickets in 26 Tests, bowling with extreme pace. His reputation as a great hitter preceded him to every land he played in. “Though he stood six feet, four inches,he was so finely built that he moved with grace and ease, and hit the ball not in the heavy lunging style of some big men, but with the full snap of the wrists....,” wrote Gerald Brodribb.

Albert Trott – In 1899, Trott hit Monty Noble over the pavilion at Lord’s – the only man to ever achieve this incredible feat. Although never very consistent with the bat, he struck powerfully all his life but his main job was to prise batsmen out with his penetrative, often devastating, slow bowling.

Arthur Wellard – A tall-strong all-rounder who could bowl well enough to open the bowling for England against Australia, Wellard won two Test caps and hit around 500 sixes in his First Class career. He was not just a slogger – possessing a solid defence and making runs consistently enough to hit 59 half centuries. Sometimes when the ball was old, he doubled up as with off-breaks from round the wicket.

Frank Woodley – Only Jessop exceeded his rate of scoring, according to RL Arrowsmith. Woolley could bring off strokes that would exhaust all adjectives before he was halfway through his innings. “When I am batting, I am the attack,” he paraphrased his simple batting philosophy, and proceeded to hit a 300 in 205 minutes. And apart from scoring nearly 60,000 runs in First-class cricket at a 40+ average, he also captured 2066 wickets at 19.67.

Percy Fender – Tailor-made for T20, three quarters of a century before the format started, Fender’s policy was to hit his way through any situation, condition or bowling quality. He slashed hard outside the off-stump, once sending a ball over cover out of The Oval. He also drove powerfully and was a fierce exponent of the pull. His skills of medium-pace and leg-break further added to his value.

Learie Constantine – The man who put the Caribbean signature on cricket, Constantine was the pied piper who lured people to the ground. He would hit hard enough to clear the ground or break fingers, and every stroke had less to do with technique and more with spontaneous innovation. A fast bowler who could be hostile and accurate, he was the best fielder of his generation – in the slips, covers or the boundary.

CK Nayudu – On his day, Nayudu could hit sixes according to his will and fancy. In 1926, when bats were of the ancient make and boundaries were far away, he scored 153 for the Hindus against Arthur Gilligan’s MCC, hitting 11 sixes and 13 fours. He could also be a handful with the ball as well.

Harold Gimblett – Gimblett was a temperamental genius who captured national imagination with his talent before falling prey to mental illness. He played just three Tests, but struck 265 sixes in all First-class cricket. His hitting soon became part of folklore and his policy was of continuous attack. He was also a livewire in the covers.

Kieth Miller – Someone who brought carefree spirit into the dull era of the post-War game, Miller could bat with casual abandon and hit the ball a long, long way. Yet, he was consistent enough to bat in the top order of an Australian line up which brimmed with talent. This despite the fact that his primary work was to bounce batsmen out with lightning-quick deliveries.

Garry Sobers – Six Sixes in an over, enough said. His explosive quality of batting in no way lacked consistency, as he scored 8,032 runs averaging in the high 50s. Additionally, he could bowl in three different styles, equally brilliantly, and could field anywhere close or in the outfield. The closest one got to an entire team in a player!

Salim Durani – In his prime Durani would often oblige the crowd by slamming sixes on demand. He could change the course of a match in a few overs with aggressive hitting or crafty left arm spin. However, he seemed to have a problem in concentrating for long periods. In other words, he was born for T20 cricket, only about seventy years ahead of time.

Colin Milburn - Milburn was a massive man with huge shots, with the ability to hit the ball out of the ground at will. Before losing his eye and saying adieu to cricket, he hit the ball with a mighty wallop between long leg and long on, hooking, pulling and driving. However, an average of 46 in Tests showed that he was not all slam-bang.

Clive Llyod– Anyone who saw the “Supercat” bat in the 1975 World Cup final will testify to his immense ability as a hitter. Using the heaviest bat in world cricket, he brought his six feet, five inch frame fully into his strokes, perhaps including the bulk of his imposing moustache and thick-lensed glasses. Few men have hit a cricket ball as hard. And on top of that he was one of the best fielders ever seen on cricket fields.

Mike Procter – A man capable of hitting a century and taking a hat-trick in the same match, and then repeating the feat, Procter’s career was cruelly cut short by the isolation of South Africa. But, in the county circuit, he provided plenty of glimpses of what the world stage missed – often unleashing his full barrage of strokes, including six sixes across 2 overs by Denis Breakwell.

Viv Richards – The King. He had an average of 47 and a strike rate of 90 in One-Day Internationals in the ancient era of 70s and 80s. Clearing the boundary with élan, he could hit far – often into neighbouring streets and rivers. And he could hit to any corner that took his fancy. One of the many anecdotes about the man is of a commentator changing his delivery at the last moment after initially thinking the great man had mistimed a stroke, “There is a man getting under it … but he has to be forty feet tall.” A handy off-spinner as well, he could also win World Cup final with his electric movements in the field coupled with unfailing direct hits.

Ian Botham – When Richards and Botham batted together for Somerset it would be fireworks from both ends, and there would be the extra work of retrieving the ball from the River Tone. Peter Roebuck would often have to come in at No 4 to separate them in the batting order, to keep the stars from burning out trying to outshine each other. Apart from being a pace bowler of rare skill, Botham could be as devastating with the bat as the very best, and in the summer of 1981, the Australians did realise that painfully. FourteenTest centuries along with 383 wickets – it does not get much better.

Imran Khan – The most polished batsman among the great all-rounders of his era – and with the best bowling record but for Richard Hadlee, Imran could hit huge sixes when required. One still remembers the murderous assault on Bishan Singh Bedi at Karachi in 1978. However, he was definitely more than a mere hitter – a thinking batsman, an astute judge of the game, a canny captain and, more often than not, unplayable when he ran in to bowl.

Collis King – Here was a man who could outshine – if only for a brief while – Viv Richards batting at the other end. He could give the ball a massive hoick, and scored at more than a run a ball through his short ODI career. Also a decent enough medium-pacer, he bagged 128 wickets in First-class cricket to go with his close to 7,000 runs.

Kapil Dev– Eddie Hemmings would be the best man to describe how hard Kapil Dev could hit a ball, how straight and how consistently. Four sixes off as many deliveries to save the follow-on – that speaks volumes about his approach to the game. Only Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist has made more than 5000 runs at a better strike rate than his 80 something in Test cricket. In ODIs, only Gilchrist, Sehwag and Shahid Afridi have made more runs at a rate faster than his 95.07 per hundred balls. And to think he played in a previous era. And lest we forget, he held the world record for maximum Test wickets for a while and was one of the best all round fielders produced by India.

Lance Cairns – Primarily in the team as a medium-pacer of quality, Lance Cairns seldom managed to bat long – but the few times he connected put him right up with the best in terms of the resulting mileage on the ball. Quite a lot of his big hitting ability rubbed off on son Chris, a much better batsman. Son scored a lot more than father’s 987 ODI runs, but fell way short of the staggering strike rate of 104.88

Sachin Tendulkar talks about retirement plans

Bangalore, Oct 5: Sachin Tendulkar, for the first time has hinted at retirement, as the Master Blaster said he would take a call in the month of November.

Tendulkar's interview to "Times Now" English news channel, which was published in "The Times of India" newspaper, has touched upon his retirement plans.

When asked about retirement, Tendulkar said: "Of course, I have been. I am 39 plus and it is not abnormal for me to think of it. At that moment, I will go by what my heart says. At this moment, my heart says I am okay. But you will have to look at series by series."

"When I play in November, I will re-assess things," he added.

England will tour India in the month of November and it will be Tendulkar's first Test series after the recently concluded New Zealand rubber at home where he was bowled in three successive innings.

"I am 39 and I don't think I have plenty of cricket left in me. But it depends on my frame of mind and my physical ability to deliver. When I feel that I am not delivering what is needed, and then I will re-look at the scheme of things. I am already 39 and no one expects me to go on playing forever. I will go with what my heart says," the right-hander said.

On kept pushing to be specific on his quitting plans, he said: "Nobody decides in this manner. I do not know what is in store. I wish I knew. If I did know, I wouldn't have had to wait for 22 years to lift the World Cup. Perhaps, I would have done it in the first instance in Australia in 91-92 then."

"I am looking at it series by series. As long as I feel that I can deliver, I will continue playing. It also depends on what the team feels and whether I am motivated enough to continue being on top of the game."

Gayle's female guests arrested in West Indies rooms

Sri Lankan police arrested three British women who were found socialising in the hotel rooms of West Indies players, including star batsman Chris Gayle, early Wednesday, police and hotel sources said.

Police bodyguards protecting players at the ongoing World Twenty20 arrested the
three Britons at the deluxe Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo and handed them over to the nearby police station for further investigations.

"Ministerial Security Division (MSD) guards assigned to protect the players carried out the arrest and the three women were handed over to the Kollupitiya police station for further investigations," police said in a statement.

Hotel sources said the women were guests of Gayle and his teammates Andre Russell, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Smith.

The sources insisted there was no breach of security at the tightly-guarded seventh floor reserved for players and team officials.

"There was no wrongdoing on the part of the players or the women and we are surprised at the police action," a hotel source who declined to be named told AFP. "It is not against the law to be a guest of a player."

There was no immediate comment from the ICC or the West Indies team which will play Australia in the semi-finals on Friday.

Police sources said they were awaiting instructions from the International Cricket Council, the organisers of the World Twenty20, to establish if they should press charges.

On September 24, a Sri Lankan broke into the rooms of two Australian cricketers at the same hotel and offered them sex. He was fined 1,000 rupees (around eight dollars) and handed a one-month suspended jail term.

The ICC had described it as a "minor isolated incident".

The authorities had declared floors occupied by cricketers as out-of-bounds as part of security for players during the September 18-October 7 tournament that was billed as the same level as for visiting heads of state.

Hotel security has been a key issue at international cricket tournaments since then-Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was found dead in his room during the World Cup in Jamaica in 2007.

His death was initially treated as a murder case before police concluded he died of natural causes.

Circa 1990s: One player carried the burden of the whole team and almost single-handedly held the key to the nation’s hopes. Still in his early 20s, he had grown in stature to become an iconic figure. Bowlers around the world feared his sight at the wicket and celebrated with unrestrained joy when he was dismissed. Sachin Tendulkar's value to the Indian team in the 1990s was unparalleled. The team heavily depended on him and India expected him to deliver. It was a well known fact that many people in India would switch-off their television sets the moment he was dismissed.

Year 2012: A 23-year old makes rapid strides in international cricket to be hailed as one of the best in world cricket. Such is his remarkable consistency, that comparisons with the legendary Tendulkar are inevitable. Like Tendulkar, he has become the mainstay of India’s batting at a young age. Indeed, his youthful exuberance and unmistakable fearlessness have made him a youth icon. Virat Kohli has had a phenomenal 12 months or so and his country expects him to succeed every single time he walks out to bat. The big question is: Is the Indian team dependent on Kohli the way they were on Tendulkar in the 1990s?

As a well-known magazine put it recently, Tendulkar’s rise in international cricket showed the Indians that they could compete on the cricket field and even emerge victorious against all odds. He would dominate bowlers, make the task look a cinch and a crisis would only emerge when he was dismissed. In the aftermath of Sunil Gavaskar's retirement, India found a new star – a dependable one at that. In the early 1990s, the Indian team was going through an uncertain phase and he presented hope for a better tomorrow.

With the arrival of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and later VVS Laxman, considerable burden was lifted off Tendulkar. They went on to become a formidable middle order and after the turn of the century became a force was not solely reliant on Tendulkar. Even in one-day cricket, youngsters such as Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif showed that India could perform remarkable heists even when Tendulkar failed. They proved that with Tendulkar’s dismissal, all hope wasn’t lost. Despite all these assurances, a Tendulkar dismissal would often silence the Indian crowds – something that happens even today.

Although Kohli has been brilliant this year and some of his knocks have defied logic – it would be an exaggeration to say that India are overly-dependent on him. In contrast to the situation Tendulkar found himself in the 1990s, Kohli has number phenomenal names for company in the batting line-up. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are proven match-winners and have rallied India for a few years now. They form the core that revolves around Kohli – a cushion that provides a comfortable support.

Kohli has rarely failed this year and it would be premature to determine how dependent India are on him based on an instance or two. His wicket is undoubtedly a big bonus for the opposition as he is the in-form man capable of scripting epic knocks. It took Tendulkar some time to build that aura of unfailing dependability around him. Kohli still has some miles to go before doing the same.

One also must not forget that unlike Tendulkar, Kohli entered the picture with a legend still around. It is only now - that too - in Test cricket that Kohli finds himself in a similar situation. Tendulkar may be around, but the likes of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have called it a day. Kohli is now the symbol of hope in this transition phase.

Australia
With two huge wins in as many matches, Australia are the best-placed team in the tournament. For them to go out, both Pakistan and India will have to win their matches by around 40 runs (if they bat first and score 160).

Pakistan
Pakistan's defeat to India - and the margin of that loss - has put their semi-final hopes in danger. Their NRR has dropped to -0.426, which is only marginally better than those of India and South Africa. If Pakistan lose to Australia, an Indian win will knock them out without NRR playing any part. Even if South Africa beat India in this scenario, Pakistan's chances remain bleak: if they lose their match by five runs (chasing 161), and if South Africa score 160 and beat India by the same margin, then Pakistan's NRR will be poorer than South Africa's.

Pakistan's passage is not straightforward even if they beat Australia. Even after winning, they'll have to hope that India don't beat South Africa by a bigger margin and sneak past them. If, for example, both Pakistan and India score 160 and win their last matches by ten runs, then Pakistan's NRR will be marginally lower than India's.

India
Like Pakistan, India too need to win to have any realistic chance of qualification. If India concede 160 and lose by more than three runs, their NRR will slip below that of South Africa. If India and Pakistan both win their matches, the margins of those results will decide which team goes through.

South Africa
South Africa are the only team that can be knocked out even before their match starts. For the second time in a row, they will be hoping Pakistan lose because if Pakistan win the first match on Tuesday, it will mean curtains for South Africa.

However, if Australia do beat Pakistan, South Africa have a fair chance of making it to the next round, thanks to poor NRRs of India and Pakistan. As mentioned above, if South Africa score 160 and win by more than three runs, their NRR will go above India's, enough to qualify provided Australia have won all their matches. The advantage for South Africa and India is that they play the last game of the group, and will thus have an exact knowledge of what they need to do to qualify.

On this day 254 years ago, into a prosperous Norfolk family, was born a man who would lead England to many memorable victories.

Admiral Horatio Nelson, an inspirational leader, won most of his conquests in the seas – but left his indelible and quaint legacy on the cricket grounds.

In 1791, after the British forces landed at Calvi, Nelson was at one of the forward batteries early in the morning when a shot struck one of the sandbags protecting the position. In the spray of stones and sand, Nelson was struck by debris in his right eye and lost its use permanently.

Six years later, in 1797, in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as Nelson stepped ashore he was hit on the right arm by a musket-ball. His humerus was fractured in multiple places and his arm had to be amputated.

He never lost a leg, but somehow, after his valorous death during the victorious Battle of Trafalgar of 1805, the legend of one eye, one arm and one leg grew. And strangely it filtered into cricket.

The score 111 and its multiples have been dreaded by teams around the world for long. Teams conspire to adjust the scoreboard to 110 or 112 during friendly games, and the players hold their breath when the match is important enough to forbid such manipulations of fate.

It is the same score which saw umpire David Shepherd execute that endearingly peculiar hop and leap that made the spectators wait eagerly for the nelson to register on the scoreboard, and break into a loud cheer when the shuffle was performed. When asked at the end of his career, Shepherd simply explained that he did it because he did not want anything untoward to happen to anyone. He also added that nelson was for: “One arm, one eye and one lump of sugar in his tea.”

Celebrated cricket scorer, Bill ‘Bearders’ Frindall once referred to nelson as "one eye, one arm and one etcetera", cheekily implying that Nelson's alleged third lost body part was ‘something else’. This, however, remains equally mythical and unverifiable.

An investigation by The Cricketer in the 1990s revealed that wickets are no more likely to fall on nelson than on any other total. In fact, the score at which most wickets fall is zero. However, there is another school of thought that believes that the score is unlucky because it resembles three stumps without bails.

On November 11, 2011, in the Test match between South Aftica and Australia, at eleven past eleven in the morning, the Proteans required 111 runs to win. The crowd and umpire Ian Gould performed Shepherd's leg raise for that minute, with the scoreboard reading 11:11 11/11/11.
