Fabric Tuesday Folks!

Hope everyone is doing well!! It's that last little bit of the school year that gets kinda crazy but exciting too as it warms up! And a little too warm in AZ :) I (Meg) got back from a week long whirlwind first half of the week in Virginia/Maryland/DC and found a home in Virginia!!! Hooray!!! Then we headed to back to Missouri to graduate. He'll be starting residency in July!

Happy Happy Day!! My face kinda cracks me up, it's like pure glee on the verge of tears. Hehe :)

Bryan house quilt finish...Tribute Star Quilt

Becca is a super cute talented girl from Bryan House Quilts. This Tribute Star quilt is just so eye catching. I love how it is offset. I also love the straight line quilting, it "moves" across the quilt. The color combination is great too! Read her story about her Grandma Florence, really sweet. A few weeks back when my guild got word we would be working on a challenge using Denyse Schmidt's new line I was thrilled. I was more than thrilled when I found out the new line is called "Florence". Florence is particularly meaningful to me because I had a grandmother named Florence. I actually never call her grandmother because she was always my mother's mother. She passed away when my mother was a young woman. But I'm sure she would have been a swell grandmother.

I wanted to make a special quilt in tribute to my grandmother Florence. More than a special quilt the process itself was special in it has allowed me and my mother to reflect a bit on our dear Florence. The fabric itself reminds me of the era in which Florence would have flourished (such great fabric!).

When I think of Florence I think of the bittersweet memories of a mid-20th century woman. A woman who was blessed with one child, my mother, late in life. And a woman whose last few years were spent battling a painful cancer when cancer treatment and palliative care were not what they are today. When I was a younger girl I didn't feel comfortable asking about Florence because of the sadness surrounding a death that leaves a daughter motherless. But as my mother says, as time passes the bitter becomes less bitter and the sweet becomes more sweet, and I've recently felt more comfortable asking about the grandmother whom I'd known only through the bits and pieces gleaned in passing as my mother casually wove her mother into conversation.

I think of my mother, Anne, recalling how comforted she felt when as a little girl she would play with her dolls underneath the big quilt frame as Florence and her sisters quilted a big quilt overhead. It was apparently especially great during thunderstorms. (This sounds like a bit of heaven to me!)

My mom finds it remarkable that I have Florence's hands. I'm sure it was a trip to one day see your mother's hands on your teenaged daughter. I remember growing up my mom occasionally studying my hands in thought and shaking her head and saying, "you have my mother's hands."

I remember my mother saying she loved to eat butter when she was little. As a mother I can only imagine Florence's surprise and bewilderment to find her daughter eating a stick of butter. And also the annoyance of having to clean butter off your child and having to buy more butter for cooking.

(Really mom?!)

Florence was a very social woman and my grandparents would go out every weekend when Florence was healthy. She loved to laugh but never at someone else's expense.

Florence loved the color purple and a particular pretty purple tulip quilt (that I will show you this summer). I like purple because it reminds me of my mother. My mom also loves purple and I guess we share that same reason. Do we choose what we like? Or are we destined to become our mothers? And at what point do we want to become our mothers? Because there is a point where we do (sorry daughters, it's true). Do we want to become our mothers or are we wishing to be a part of their story? Or to pass their greatness to our children?

Florence used to love to sit in the back yard and gaze up at the stars. She knew the constellations and would point them out to my mom when she was a girl. (I would too, do you know how bright the stars were back then in that unpolluted, street light-less sky?)

So, in honor of my grandmother Florence I give you my "Tribute Star" quilt.

New quilt finish: Woodland Trails...

I created this fun quilt within the last few months. I don't normally go with these colors, but they really called to me. I think it was mostly the owls and hopping foxes. I mean, come on! I love this line a lot! It is Les Amis by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller. LOVE LOVE LOVE! There is the same line in a gray and aqua colorway. You will die! (or already have)

I have a mix of applique. I just did fusible. Way to much turning under for me. I liked how the white squares made a trail, and the peach squares made a trail. That is how I came up with the name Woodland Trails...

I tried to machine free motion quilt it to make the peach trails stand out more, didn't really work, but I am still very happy with this quilt...

We don't have it in the shop just yet, but have it ready. Email me if you are interested in ordering this pattern.

Cute quilt finish from Sew paint it...

Darling finish from Marianne of Sew Paint It. Marianne does a little bit of everything, sewing, decorating, renovating, painting, you name it. Our kind of lady! We got this submission, and Megan and I both have a soft spot for Sarah Jane fabric. Just looking at this quilt makes me want to go play with my stash. Anyhow, Marianne did a little bit of everything on this quilt, applique, hand stitching, machine quilting etc. We love it all!

I finished a quilt! It is my boys quilt using children at play fabric by Sarah Jane and I am really, really, really pleased with it!

I finished it today.

The backing was a sheet I found and I love it. It is so soft and lovely. Love the design for my little boy too.

Diggers and tractors - just what little boys like!

I did machine quilting on this quilt and then hand quilted around the stars.

I love hand quilting because it is so soft and specially for someone. It shows you care.

The machine quilting is 0.25" from each seam.

The binding is also a sheet, a plain blue one which was worn out in areas. It is really soft. I hate doing the corners! I must find some tutorials on doing that better because there is definitely room for improvement there!

Back from Vacation, Fabric Tuesday!

Hello all. Megan and I have been super busy the last few months. I feel like I have been out of town a lot. Lots of little weekend trips too. Sorry for the lack of posts lately. We will try to be better! Last week I had a real fun time on my North East vacation with my husband. Hope you liked the sampling of INSTAGRAM pics.

I played on INSTAGRAM a lot over my vacation! I like it so much better than facebook! Probably because I am so visual. I love seeing peoples projects along the way, and not just the final product. Instagram is the perfect way to lay out some fabrics and ask people if they like them or if they should take one out etc. And get almost instant feedback! It is fun! If you want to follow me (Heather) I am @quiltstory. Come follow me, I would love to see what you are up to as well. I have plenty photos of my everyday life and kids, but I am trying to be better about taking photos of my quilting/fabric projects as well.

Garden Steps Quilt from Clover and Violet

The gorgeousness of this quilt is almost too much, it makes me so happy!! So girly and pretty. And when you read/look closer you'll see it is also embroidered. It's from the Garden Steps Stitch & Quilt Along at Clover & Violet. So darling right?? Jennie and Clara (mother-daughter duo) have some amazing projects they are always sharing and teaching like this darling Lone Quilt Block Pillow tutorial. For all things inspiring like quilting, stitching and sewing you must add Clover & Violet to your list :)

My Garden Steps Stitch & Quilt Along!We are having nice weather here which made a good day for taking photos outdoors. I am glad to have another quilt finished, even quilted and bound. I had help finishing this quilt. Kathy from Stitch by Stitch, quilted it for me and I love the way it turned out!! Thank you Kathy, she is great to work with and does such nice quilting!!

She used a very light aqua thread to quilt it, it is a little out of my comfort zone but I took some advice and I think it works well because of all the aqua in the front and the back.

I am very happy that I used this blue Domestic Bliss for the backing!! Isn’t the back pretty with the floral quilting in an all over pattern!

Scraps Scraps and Scraps for sale!!

Phew, just a couple of weeks to go and I'm on my way cross country to DC! (Well Maryland likely, but you know :) As I was going through my craft room yesterday I noticed I needed to SERIOUSLY downsize my scraps!!! That's where you come in! Here are the bins:

Yep. That's a lot. How would you like to take some of my hands?? PLEASE! :) I am putting some scrap packs together in our Etsy shop. I will fill a gallon size Ziploc to the top, throw it in a Priority Mail envelope and it's off to you!

It will all be quilting cotton. Fabulous designers and excellent prints.

Rainbow Wave Quilt from Busy Hands Quilts

I love color, bright colors, and thus I do love rainbow! Our feature today of Mrs. Hearts from Busy Hands Quilts is so happy and bright!! A darling quilt for her daughters joyful room! :) I think I even have enough solids to make my own...hmmm. Make sure to check out Busy Hands Quilts...she truly is busy!! Almost every post is a finish!My daughter's newly decorated room. Don't you love the walls?!? The other two walls are blue, which I may show you on another day. That half of the room is ... not ... clean!!! I had originally planned to make a Rainbow Plus Quilt on the top bunk {remember the 60 solids I purchased?}, but when Millie and I found this set at Kohl's for uber cheap, we couldn't pass it up. It matches perfectly!The bottom quilt is a full-size Wave quilt with 18 different solids, made by yours truly.
It is LOVE ... or what!?!
It turned out truly AMAZING!The backing is a Riley Blake chevron in apple green and white, and oh, my, this fabric was a charm to work with! WAY nicer than lesser quality flannels from other sources. I washed and dried it once before assembling the quilt since flannel shrinks more than regular cotton fabrics and will shrink again when washed a second time. The quilt top and binding were not preshrunk.
Here is a close-up of the candy binding. YUM! I quilted across the quilt twice in the colored areas, varying the height of the "swoops" as the wave progressed; and the white has tiny up/down swoops in it which you can't see.
Can you see where the two chevron fabric pieces were joined? It's pretty hard to find it! This high-quality flannel from Riley Blake was printed so perfectly on excellent fabric that the points met amazingly well. I pinned the two pieces together at every zig zag and had no problems whatsoever.

Another week closer to my big move to the Washington DC area...scary! I'd be lying if I didn't say I feel totally overwhelmed right now...so much to do. But in the great news department, my husband finished his last day or rotations!! This means he has OFF unitl JULY 1st!!! All he has to do is graduate in May :) And in other great news Heather and I have finished FIVE NEW PATTERNS!! This is really happy news for us. We'll be posting them each on the blog over the next few weeks and hope to have them all in the shop this week.

Thanks for being patient all these long months while I participated in a BOM with Megan & Heather at Quilt Story blog. We all started in March last year... and finally it's time to reveal our finished quilt. My quilt was made for my hubby so he could wrap himself up this winter watching his favourite football team. Both he and I are very happy with the end result.

Broken Diamonds Quilt from Blueberry Patch

Love this quilt today from Cathy at Blueberry Patch, really striking. I've never done an all solids quilt but I get tempted when I see awesome finishes like this! I've had an idea for one for my husband for a while, maybe I'll finally get around to it in cold DC! :) Cathy has a lot of great finishes and she shares a lot of fun fabric and sewing projects on Blueberry Patch. Thanks for sharing today!

I finished this the other day and hung it up on the barn for a few pictures. This is Inspired Broken Diamonds and I am calling it that because I was inspired to make it after seeing this quilt on Kati's blog From The Blue Chair. I found her Broken Diamonds quilt mesmerizing and I knew that I had to try it. It took me awhile to get around to it but I did.

So what did I do? Lot of solids cut into strips in a variety of widths. The strings are paper pieced in matching quarters and then sewn together with other matching quarters. There are no repeats. The "diamonds" are all different sizes for the most part. Then the fun came when I put them together. That was a bit of a construction project! I had to sash the blocks in a way that allowed them to fit together. Once that happened, I filled in the empty space with giant triangles and we were away to the races. That was until I realized I had goofed with the orientation of the quilt and I had to un-sandwich it and tweak the quilt a bit so I had the blocks in the right orientation. Long story. Short story is it makes me happy. There is one wee diamond in a different orientation. Can you see it? That was an oops but it is an okay oops. The quilt advisor (a.k.a. Husband) thought the diamonds should have their lighter sides to the left as if the sun might be on them. Do you see what I mean? All the diamonds are in that orientation except the one little oops. That one slipped by me somehow!

The quilting is straight lines about an inch apart, in Aurifil 50 wt in white and I think it looks just great! The binding is Kona Charcoal and I used some leftover solids on the back with Ikea's Britten Numbers. So much fun!!!!! I was stitching the binding when I noticed the number forty two on the back! Forty two is such an auspicious number! The answer to the secret of the universe, right? Nothing like a literary reference on a quilt! (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

This isn't our first time featuring Elizabeth from Don't Call Me Betsy, in fact I have no idea how many times we've featured her!! She is an awesome and creative quilter, we love her work! She's sharing an awesome modern quilt today that was featured at QuiltCon! So cool! :) Be sure to see Don't Call Me Betsy if you haven't, awesome tutorials (love this Mod 9 patch), classes if you happen to live near her, Quilt-A-Longs...you name it!

Checking Instagram the last day or two has been sheer torture. Photos are flooding in from QuiltCon, and gosh, I wish I were there. I am lucky enough to have a few pieces of me there at QuiltCon, but gosh I wish I could be there to take it all in. The next one will be in 2015, and I definitely plan to be there!

One of my quilts on display at QuiltCon is featured in the Modern Quilts Unlimited booth, #308. Modern Quilts Unlimited is a fantastic new modern quilting magazine, and I was super excited when they selected one of my designs to share at their booth. This quilt is something I designed a while back, while dreaming of rich Art Gallery solids, and it was a lot of fun to finally put it together.

The Art Gallery solids I used for this project are: Crystal Pink, Cabernet, Dark Citron, Light Citron, Cherry Lipstick, Festival Fuschia, Fresh Water, Empire Yellow, Burnt Orange, Tile Blue, Emerald, with Mystic Gray for the background and Caviar for the binding. You can find Art Gallery solids in stock atIntrepid Thread and Stash Modern Fabrics.

This is also the quilt that I used my Clamshell Loop FMQ design on, the one in the tiny sneak peek photo! This was the first larger quilt that I used that FMQ technique on, and it was really fun and easy to do.

I love how this quilt came together, and I am so happy that I got to see a photo of it on display in Austin at QuiltCon. Maybe next time, I can manage to have another quilt on display there and actually get a picture of me with it! Have a great weekend :)

Happy Tuesday everybody! I've had a busy two weeks with family in town, it has been so much fun! I haven't got much crafting done until a couple nights ago, can't wait to share.

The biggest news in my family as of late is that my (Megan) husband (who will be graduating from medical school in MAY!! YAY!!) was accepted into a residency program in WASHINGTON DC!!!!!! We live in Gilbert AZ ya'll!! I am equally as excited as scared. A HUGE move, lots of planning and things to get done. I may be whining and asking advice here and there over the next several weeks. I've never been to the NE at all, he spent a weekend in PA and DC :) He starts JULY 1st, as in 3 months from now. !!!!!

Birthday String Quilt from So Sarah Sews

Well, I'm moving to London, England in 6 short months. And I've made a quilt for all my young nieces and nephews...the ones that have been born in the last few years. But my goal for this year was to give my older nieces and nephews a quilt before I leave.

I took care of Grant, whose birthday was in December, with this camoflage quilt.

Next up is my oldest niece, Brooke. Her birthday is 4 days after mine in February, and I'm happy to say I'm already done with her quilt! (Only two more to go after her!)

Here it is. She's going to be 15 this year. I can't believe it. I think this will suit her. She told me she likes all these colors, but no yellow, which is funny because her room is yellow.

This is an up-close of the quilting. I did big flowers throughout the quilt. I like it. (Don't mind the string hanging off there...don't know how I missed that!)

The back is one fabric I chose that I thought she would like. The colors in the pic are a little off, but it's really nice in person. I hope she likes it!

I had a lot of little triangles left over when I trimmed the blocks. I made a baby quilt with them, you can check it out here.

Heather's Block of the Month Sampler quilt finish...

Yesterday you saw Megan's finish. Today is my Block of the Month finish. Megan and I fought over that lovely stack of Backyard Baby for our Block of the Month. She won in the end because of her two boys, and wanting to make them quilts for their beds. I was bummed out until I saw my stack of lovely fabric. Ooh La La by pillow and Maxfield. How could these bright colors not make anyone happy???

Here is my finished quilt...

You can see a bit of the quilting, our Aunt Wendy quilts a lot of our quilts. This was just a large swirl design. Sweet.

The weather was behaving quilt nicely. Since it was overcast, I was able to get the beautiful Utah mountains and my quilt exposed properly! I loved how the photos turned out.

This awesome fence was just off the side of the road. Ended up being a perfect rustic setting. You may see more photos here!

Sorry for the quilt interruption .., one of my helpers. I tend to be a little ADD with my hobbies. That goes with photography, and photography of the kids! I know! I am a horrible mother. I LOVE candid sweet children's photographs. I am going to try to do better this year. These babies of mine are growing up too fast!! Isn't she sweet? (At least she still has yummy cheeks to kiss!)

Hope you liked! I am going to try to talk Megan into another one. We both learned some new techniques, and mostly I learned the value of just working a little at a time really adds up!

Sampler Chain Quilt Finish and Fab Tues!

I did it!! My Block of the Month quilt is entirely finished. And it makes me really really happy :) It all started with this lovely stack of Backyard Baby fabrics:

And here it is, quilted, bound and ready to be snuggled with.

Our series was for a year, a block each month with a theme right? Ie star, hst, pinwheel, etc.. I decided that I wanted to make my quilt a twin, so in the end I doubled the amount of squares and did 12 nine patches to make it a Chain Sampler quilt. Each square is 15" finished. It is 68" x 90".

My aunt did the quilting, this was too big for me and not even the time to consider it on my limited machine! She did wavy lines to show the chains better, stippling throughout the blocks and then each sampler block she did some great custom quilting. On all of the blocks with trees she'd follow the shape of the tree. I love how she did it!

I backed it with gray minky and the orange print seemed perfect for the binding. I actually almost wish I'd used orange in each block, or used it more.

There you have it! Soon one of my boys will have this on their new extra big boy beds. Now I'm going to lay under it and watch New Girl. I'm done for the night :)

Easter Canvas Tutorial...

Hello! Okay, my camera had some issues, or my computer. I lost a lot of photos. But we are not going to panic. You don't need all the photos for this simple tutorial. (if you need more photos, you can refer to my Valentine's Canvas tutorial. Very similar projects.)

Darling. Frugal. About 1 hour of your time.

I know Easter is this weekend, but I am going to leave it up for spring.

All you need is a 16 x 20 canvas. Hobby Lobby or Walmart. Then a 16x20 piece of fabric. I went all springy on mine. Love it. But would love to see someone do it in a more modern print too... Mod Podge, your fabric to the canvas. Press out bubbles.

Print out these link 1 link 2 files on regular 8.5 x 11 paper. Tape them together at the notch (you will see what I mean). Using the bunny template and white wool felt, cut the bunny out. I found that cutting it with a small blade rotary cutter was the way to go with this project.

Then I just used spray adhesive and placed it on the almost dry mod podge fabric layer.

The nice thing about these canvases is they are super light. You can prop them just about anywhere without nail holes. Just a fun spring touch. Hope you make one too!

And one more bit of spring decor. I lined the back of my hutch with Michael Miller Pillow and Maxfield fabric. So bright! I am going to bring lots of these bright colors into my living room this year. Hope you like!

Fabric Tuesday...Come play!

Hi all! Spring is finally in the air! I have actually been working on some fun projects and blocks this last week. I will share soon. This weekend we went my inlaws and had a fun at an Easter Egg hunt, fishing, and kite flying. It was a short lovely vacation. I was able to sneak in some sewing as well. That NEVER happens!

Tomorrow I have a super easy Easter Bunny Canvas tutorial. Make sure to check back. Really easy, and I am going to leave mine out for Spring. So don't feel like it is too late!
