Fogging

Fogging is a technique used for killing insects that involves using a fine pesticide spray (aerosol) which is directed by a blower. In some cases, a hot vapour may be used to carry the spray and keep it airborne for longer. Fast-acting pesticides like pyrethroids are typically used. This is widely used for sampling or studying insects in the canopy of tall forests which cannot be effectively reached. The floor below the trees are lined with plastic sheets and the fog causes insects to fall in the rain. These are collected for later study in the laboratory

Fogging is also one of the best method to reduce mosquitoes in construction sites. Fogging can be done using chemicals like Cyclomethrin 50%EC

Controlling mosquito breeding in cities is quite difficult task, but it can be done. How?
The main target is Construction sites, The Mosquito breeding takes place in stagnant water, during construction of buildings, the water is used for curing is stagnated in basement, sunkens and also in the lift ducts. The Health departments of the construction sites may put some guys to find the mosquito breeding areas and spraying of pesticide will be done. The Multi National Companies like CCCL, Mfar Constructions, Onshore Constructions will take care to prevent mosquito breeding and the Diseases like Malaria and Dengue is less in these company labours. But the local companies does not take care to prevent mosquito breeding so the diseases like Malaria and Dengue spread over the cities. The city Municipalities take necessary action to stop mosquito breeding. Weekly visit to all construction sites by the city corporation helps to prevent these killer diseases.

INSECTICIDE TREATED NETS

The Anopheles is one of the best known types of mosquito because of its role in the transmission of malaria. Since the Anopheles mosquito bites between dusk and dawn, sleeping under mosquito nets treated with insecticides provides critical protection against the spread of malaria. Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) can prevent around 50 percent of malaria cases and can reduce child deaths by an average 18 percent. Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the most cost effective and sustainable method for protection against malaria. LLINs are treated in factories with insecticide and last for approximately three years. Besides protecting those sleeping from infected mosquitoes, LLINs help reduce the overall number of mosquitoes by killing those that come into contact with the treated net. LLINs are increasingly being distributed in place of conventionally treated ITNs which need retreating with insecticide regularly.

Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is considered an effective means of mosquito (vector) control. IRS involves spraying internal walls and ceilings of dwellings using insecticides with residual action (i.e. insecticides that remain on the surface for a long time). The effectiveness of this control method depends to a large extent on the vector’s sensitivity to the insecticide used and how much they like to rest indoors. Most vectors in Africa do prefer to rest indoors.

Spraying needs to take place before the malaria transmission season.

The parasite in the blood takes about 12 days at 25oC (or longer in cooler environments) to
develop before it is ready to be transmitted by the mosquito. During this period, the mosquito has to feed about 4-6 times. There is a high probability that the mosquito will rest on a sprayed wall during this time; if it dies then the parasite will not have been transmitted.

Only the female mosquitoes feed on blood, male mosquitoes feed on plant nectar and juices. Female Mosquitoes are attracted by CO (Carbon dioxide) in our breath. Malaria is transmitted from person to person by anopheles mosquito. The female mosquito lays 30-150 eggs every 2-3 days. Human blood is needed to nourish these eggs.

By using personal protective measures against mosquito bites, like using mosquito nets, one can deny the blood meal and hence help in mosquito control. Anopheles mosquitoes enter the house in early hours of morning and again between 5 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. Mosquitoes start biting by late evening and at midnight and early hours of morning. By keeping the windows and doors closed in early morning and between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. can prevent the entry of these mosquitoes into the house. Also protect yourself against the bites in the early morning and evening.

The proper way to control mosquito at home is to avoid breeding near to your home. Find is there any water stagnation near your house or leak of any drainage. If there is stagnant water, remove that as soon as possible to prevent mosquito breed.
