Hello World,

Unity Month 2010 finally comes to an end. The days are getting colder and the nights are getting longer. On the last and final day of November, I would like thank all of you for taking this journey with us and celebrating Unity for an entire. I have created a slideshow of the various exciting events throughout the month. Hopefully it will bring back lots of great memories as it has for me. This may be the end of November and Unity Month, but this isn't the end of Unity. We hope that every day you reflect on what you have learned this month because together, we are Unity.

Hey World,

After the break, there is going to be an amazing symposium on the about HIV/AIDS at Emory. The event will take place in the Few Multipurpose room at 7pm on November 30th. Further details are down below.

The purpose of this event is to make members of the Emory Community, especially students, aware of the socio-politico-cultural history of HIV/AIDS and the incredible role that Emory is playing in all aspects of HIV/AIDS research and policy, by presenting them with a keynote address delivered by Dean James Curran of the Rollins School of Public Health. His presentation will frame a panel discussion that will open dialogue between members of the Emory community and professionals from various backgrounds who are involved in HIV/AIDS research and policy.

The panel will consist of Dr. Carlos Del Rio, Dr. Harriet Robinson, Mary Loftus, and Paige Parvins.

Happy Unity Month!!!! Thank you all for making this year's festivities amazing. As this year's festivities draw to a close, we are bringing you a very special treat, but first, a simple question:

Come on out to UNITY BALL this Saturday, 11/20 from 10pm-1am at Cox Ballroom! It'll be a blast and if you want these sweet glow in the dark shutter shades, be one of the first 50 to buy a ticket and the shades are free! Tickets are being sold at the tables in the DUC on Nov. 16, 18, & 19 for $5. Tickets are also being sold at the door for $7. Buy your ticket quickly before we run out of shutter shades! Hey Beautiful People,

If you're free on Thursday night, you should head on down to Center for Ethics for the Second Annual Ethics Art Cafe. The Ethics and the Arts Society and WonderRoot Community Arts Center have teamed up again to put together an amazing evening filled with inspirational artists and thought-provoking discussion. Details are down below.

The Ethics Arts Cafe will take place on November the 18th (7 pm-9pm), at the Emory Center for Ethics. It is a collaborative arts symposium organized by The Ethics and the Arts Society and WonderRoot Atlanta. This event brings artists from eclectic backgrounds and art forms together under the umbrella of ethics. In doing so, it offers an opportunity to spark challenging conversations about several ethical issues from social identity and marginalization to building a more encompassing sense of community (within and beyond Emory). Artists from the wider community, who use their art as a tool for social change, are invited to showcase their work with the Emory community.

This year's artists include: Gypsee Yo (Albanian performance poet and actress), Mikaela Sheldt (visual artist), Aviva and the Flying Penguins (musicians), Blake Myers (film maker), Sabbathwind (musician), Aubrey Graham (anthropologist and photojournalist working in Africa's conflict zones), the Congregation Beth Haverim Choir and HBO Def Poetry Jam and CNN Black in America's Jon Goode (Host).

Light refreshments will be served.

The event will take place at the Emory Center for Ethics 1531 Dickey Dr. Free Parking in the Peavine Lot.

Road to Cultural Beats: Persuasian

PersuAsian is an all female hip hop dance crew at Emory that incorporates sass and swag with a hint of Asian culture. Originally founded as a small dance team Spring of 2008, the team hoped to reach out to the Asian-American community on Emory Campus via a modern dance style rather than typical traditional Asian dance. Since then, the group has evolved into a dynamic and reputable dance team, and by incorporating dance-fans in their routines, Persuasian uniquely fuses the traditional East Asian dance-forms with modern hip hop. Persuasian often performs for the Asian community on Emory campus at annual events such as Korean Culture Night, Lunar Banquet, and the China Care Fundraiser Banquet, in addition to major campus-wide events such as Cultural Beats, Essence, and AHANA dance. Persuasian has also participated in Atlanta-wide competitions such as Kollaboration ATL II, Kollaboration ATL III, and Culture Shock.

The finalized wall is on display in the DUC beside the staircase that leads up to the MGM Theatre.

Hey Beautiful People,

I'm sure some of you - particularly those who frequent the Anthropology Dept - may already know Dr. Vidali (Spitulnik), but most people probably don't know that she is also a playwright. She's written a play based on some of her research into the nature of media hype and how it affects peoples' perceptions of socio-political issues. The play will showcase at the theatre lab in the Schwartz Center on November 13 - 15. I've seen the play and honestly speaking, it's really thought-provoking and insightful. If you have some spare time next weekend, I encourage to go check it out. All the details are below.

Meditation on compassion and lovingkindness is scientifically known to reduce stress, improve concentration and memory, strengthen immunity, and foster a sense of wellbeing. Participants will, as desired, take turns reading a short, simple, non-religious set of phrases to help develop a positive state of mind. Participants can join or leave the circle at any time.

We Are Gold and Blue

Isn't it funny how life works sometimes?

Many of us go around feeling lonely

Even though there are literally thousands of people just like us

Maybe that's the curse of Emory's geography

Pockets of separate planets wrapped into one disjointed universe

Tunnel-visioned with no cognizance of any world outside of our own

It seems crazy to think that we all go to the same school

Sometimes suffer the repercussions of a bad lunch from the DUC

And constantly wish that Dooley would

Come let out of that God-awful test we did not study for

Sometimes I think we are too wrapped up

In the asinine hullabaloo of everyday life

Like that meeting I have to go to

Or the test I have to study for

And for Pete's sake why won't my lab experiments work

To really stop and take a moment to see what makes us all special

We are a community of scientists and artists

Thinkers and dreamers

We are business people and hippies

We are superficially serious and secretly goofy

We're bent on saving the world

Even though sometimes we act like we don't care

We've all got burdens we refuse to share

We're LGBT and straight

We're Buddhists, Muslims, Wiccans, Christians,

Jews and Hindus, Agnostics and Sikhs

We're even Atheists in more ways than we care to admit

We're Israelis and Palestinians, Tibetan and Chinese

We are every race, color, gender, and creed

But no matter how we divide amongst ourselves

Or what campus we're on

Come what may

Whether hell or high water

Or sun or rain

You and me will forever be

Gold and Blue
