It has been a long time since I posted a project, but I can assure you I have been doing many things. I think it is time to begin doing what I set out to do when I first started to blog-- to keep some record of the things I do and to share that with family and friends.

This project is a quilt made for Charley Parsons for Christmas 2015. It is made from the clothing that Charley wore in her first few months. Charley is the daughter of Joanne (Burry) and Troy Parsons. I have included a copy of the letter that I wrote to Charley explaining the Christmas gift.

Young Citizen of Canada

My nephew, Matthew, recently took part in the Avalon Regional Heritage Fair in Bay Roberts and as a result has been chosen for the Young Citizens of Canada Program. This blog entry is about him and his project. First go watch his video and vote from June 11- August 7, 2012. There is one vote per email address.

Matthew Rogers, a 10 year old, grade 5 student of Roncalli Elementary, received the Regional Award (Overall Winner) for his project on Silver Fox Island. Matthew is the Grandson of Garland Rogers and the Great Grandson of the late Samuel and Tryphena Rogers (nee Matthews), who resettled from Silver Fox Island is 1956.

Although the island was totally abandoned during the 1950s and 1960s, Garland Rogers returned to the island each spring to fish. When Matthew was about 18 months old, he made his first trip to Silver Fox Island and has connected with his fishing heritage. He enjoys returning to the island each summer and he enjoys learning about life on the island- both the present and the past.

The theme of this year`s Heritage Fair was By Land, Sea, and Air. In his project, Matthew showed how the people on the island survived by depending on the land, sea, and air; how they moved from the island and resettled in larger communities; how the heritage of Silver Fox Island continues in three generations.

Keepsake for Mom

A little while ago Allison gave me Blake's receiving blankets to make into a quilt. It is a great keepsake for mom and Blake.

I started with a pile of receiving blankets.

Cut them into 10 Inch Squares.

I also appliquéd some pieces.

I did horizontal stitching for the quilting

On the back I put a Teddy Bear Flannel.

Nutritious Muffins

I can remember my mother making these muffins for us when we were younger. They had all kinds of good ingredients for the picky eaters and a great snack.

They are really good. I use a mixture of large and small muffin tins.

Nutritious Muffin Ingredients

1 can (16oz) 2 % evaporated Milk ( I usually use skim)

1 cup all bran

1 cup rolled oats

3/4 cup brown sugar

1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

1/4 cup wheat germ

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

2 tbsp flax seed meal

1/2 cup oil

2 large eggs

2 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup chocolate chips ( Or blueberries)

1. Combine the first 3 ingredients and allow to soak until you are ready to use them.

2. In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients, including chocolate chips.

3. Add oil, eggs, and vanilla to the wet oats mixture.

4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients.

5. Mix only until all ingredients are moist

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes for large muffins. Makes 24 large muffins.

This muffin just came out of the oven. Still hot.

Mod Podge Makeover

Over a year now, I got a deal on a wall hanger, flower holder thingy. It was ugly but I got it for $1.00. I made a couple of attempts to fix it, and settled on this one.

This was my second attempt at painting it.

I covered it with fabric using mod podge. I made a little garden flag and using a wooden flower shape made the flower.

Then I added some lace and buttons to complete it.

Lace cloths

So it's time to pull out more lace from my stash. This time I am making a cloth to go on my sofa table. I have a very wide lace that will be perfect with a different one sewed around the edges. Simple change for a little while.

These were the two types of lace that I used. Like I said, simple!

Knitting Needle Holder

I don't do a lot of knitting, but I have several pairs that may be found in one of a number of places. I thought that I would make a place for them and as I find them put them where they belong. Nothing too difficult to make, but it does the job.

I started with an empty Pringles container and covered it with scrapbooking paper.

Then I added some more strips on top of that. Added an enjoy sticker and the letters to make Knit.

Heritage Project: Silver Fox Island

When I first started this blog, I posted a few pictures that I was working on for my Heritage Quilt-- the one my Nephew would use for a part of the Heritage Fair Project on Silver Fox Island.

Well, it's done now and the fair was last Friday. He doesn't know who won yet, but in my mind he is already a winner-- he had fun and was so proud of what he had done. It was impressive how so many family members became interested in this project and helped get pictures and artefacts for his project.

My father's family resettled from Silver Fox Island in the early 1960's, so this next blog will be my efforts to capture my heritage and the way of life on a small island in Bonavista Bay, NL in the form of a heritage quilt.

This quilt consists of a series of images sketched on Muslin fabric. The sketches are then shaded with Crayola Crayons. When completed I covered the picture with brown paper and ironed it it melt the crayon and to ensure that it does not come off. Anyway, here it is:

I will also show each picture with an explanation of what they represent.

The first picture identifies the location and basic shape of the island. The island is about 3 km in length. In 1901 there were 82 people living there, but as a result of Resettlement by 1969, the island was completely abandoned. The town of Hare Bay, identified on the map, is where my family resettled.

During Christmas it was-- and in some communities still is- common for people to dress up and go to visit other houses. The people would try to guess who the people were. This traditions is known as mummering.

When the daily catch of Cod fish were brought back to the island, they were unloaded from the boat and cleaned. The splitting table was used to put the fish on to remove the innards (or as we say to gut the fish). Traditionally, the fish were also split (backbone removed), salted, and dried to preserve them for the winter.

This picture depicts a lobster fisherman as he heads out to set his traps just as the sun begins to rise. My father still catches lobsters during the summer. I can recall seeing the traps piled by the shed during the spring and Dad making the heads to go in the traps. The head were made from twine and attached to the opening. I also remember his boat and the wharf loaded with traps during the spring of the year. I couldn't wait for the first meal of lobsters, still can't.

During the summer and fall blueberries, partridge-berries, bake-apples (aka cloud berries), black berries and red currents were picked. They were used to make jam in the past. Many people today freeze these berries until they are needed.

This is a picture of a Cod fish on a jigger. The picture I used to draw this one was by Ed Roach, a Newfoundland artist.

This picture is a Cod Fish jigger. These were quite common in the early fishery in Newfoundland. I can recall using these to catch fish. Today we use hook and line with bait.

The next picture is a sketch of an old stage. The stage was the area where the fishing gear was stored and where the catch was cleaned. This represents the one used today by my father during the summer when he fishes from the island. My artistic skills are not good enough for an exact replica, but it does capture what it was like.

This picture is one of my father in his boat looking down at his catch of lobster. Anyone who knows my father will know that this is him.

Ice bergs are common around the coast of Newfoundland. This is a picture of an iceberg in the mouth of the harbour -- probably five years ago.

This is a picture of my parents cabin on the island. This is where they stay during the fishing season. Dad still goes there in April to catch Crab. He could have retired 5 years ago, but he loves fishing.

This is a picture of Gerald Matthews' house on the Island. This is the oldest house there now-- an original. The roof was changed though. This is my mother peeping in the window and nephew by the door. (Don't think it does justice to him though)

This is the old Anglican Church. The pews and the bell were taken to Dover after resettlement.

This represents resettlement. Some people took their houses with them when they moved.

This picture is a young man fishing through the ice- a practice still common today. This picture was traced and coloured by Matthew.

Crocheted Basket

A couple of weeks ago I started crocheting another lace cloth. I accidentally forgot to increase the number of stitches after a few rounds and I ended up making a basket. Here are a few pictures of the different places I could use it.

Even though it doesn't feel like spring, I take great comfort in knowing that in a month or so the temperatures will hopefully stay above zero and the snow will be gone (That's not guaranteed though). I am also glad that I can begin the spring crafts. Today I started with a wreath.

I didn't have a wreath to start with so I made that too. Wire from a two twigs of flowers, joined with wire.

Then with lace.

Then I added the white and purple twigs with hot glue. I then used Mod Podge to add some fabric to wooden hearts. Added a bow too. It looks great!

Baked Sweet Potato Fries

We have sweet potato at least a couple of times a week. One of our favourite ways is to bake them as Fries.
They are simple.

First cut the potato the same way you would for regular fries. Toss in a bowl with about a tbsp of oil. Spread on a cookie sheet. I have started using a silicone sheet on my regular cookie sheet. Works well and easy to clean up. Otherwise, I recommend parchment paper.

I usually season with garlic powder and a sundried tomato and garlic seasoning (No salt).

Bake until crisp on 350 for about 25 minutes. To brown both sides, you may want to turn them and place them in for another 10 minutes. (Note: Oven temperatures vary, so keep and eye).

Stuffed Mushrooms

I love stuffed mushrooms! I thought I would try a new recipe this evening based once again on the ingredients that I already have.

I used large white mushrooms, onions, sodium reduced turkey bacon, garlic, and cream cheese.

They were yummy!! Especially with chicken and sweet potato fries (I'll also post these). The chicken was from Costco.

I started by taking the stems from the mushroom and chopping them with onion,one slice of cooked turkey bacon, and a couple of shakes of garlic powder. I cooked these with a small amount of oil for about 10 minutes on a low heat setting. When it was done, I let it cool a little and added about 2 tbsp of cream cheese-- low fat of course.

I then put them in the oven on 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Done.

Southern Bars-- Makeover

Today, I crave chocolate. Therefore, when I started thinking about what I would prepare for desert, I though about the Souther Bar recipe that I got from Eileen Chant when I lived in LaPoile, NL many years ago. It was in 1989 when I took my first teaching position.

However, when I looked at the recipe and my grocery cupboard, I realized that I did not have the ingredients that I needed. Okay that was fine-- substitute.

I will however provide both recipes.

Original Recipe:

Place the following items in a square pan in layers.

1/4 cup melted butter.

1 cup Graham wafer crumbs. (mix together in pan and press for crust)

1 cup coconut

1 cup nuts

1 cup chocolate chips.

Pour a can of sweetened condensed milk on top. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees F.

All I had was butter, coconut and condensed milk.

Here's my makeover:

1/4 cup melted butter

1/3 cup crushed almonds

1 cup flour

Combine these ingredients and press in square baking pan for crust.

Add

1 cup coconut

1 cup chocolate bar crushed ( I used aero and dark chocolate combined. Dark chocolate is good for you right?:)

1 cup crushed almonds

Top with sweet milk

Bake for 20-25 minutes on 350 degrees.

Then wait to cool, if you can. The chocolate will harden again. The sweet milk had sunk through the coconut and they will be chewy. My only concern with these was the crust difference.
The verdict is they are delicious!!! Yummy

Chair Mat

I enjoyed crocheting with lace last week, so I decided to use a similar project to make a chair mat. The chair is about 50 years old and it was made by my Great Grandfather Rogers. The spindles were actually carved using a pocket knife. It is meant to be a child's chair to transition between an high chair and a regular chair. Anyway, I was only a baby when he died and he said the chair was mine. I have kept it all these years and now decided to spruce it up and do a mat.

The pattern I used was for a round doily. I use the same type of hook as you would use to do a rag rug-- very large, but I don't know the size. The material I use is below in the second photo. It started with a chain of 5. Then join with a slip stitch to make a loop. I then made one chain and in the loop I did 8 single crochets. Joined with a slip stitch to the chain. Following this each row followed a pattern.

Chain 1. 2 Single crochet in first of the single crochet of the first row. *Then 1 single crochet in next single crochet. 2 single crochet in next.** Repeat from * to **. Join with a slip stitch in the first chain.

Chain 1. 2 Single crochet in first of the single crochet of the previous row. * Then 1 single crochet in next 2 single crochet. 2 single crochet in the next** Join with slip stitch.

Chain 1. 2 Single crochet in first of the single crochet of the previous row. * Then 1 single crochet in next 3 single crochet. 2 single crochet in the next** Join with slip stitch.

Continue enlarging in this manner until it is the desired size. (That is the next row will have 1 single crochet in the next 4... )

Crocheted Lace

While visiting my parents a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that my mother was crocheting a rag rug. She was using strips that she was cutting from fabric and sewing them together. I plan to do one of these. However, for practice and because I had lace that I didn't have other plans for, I decided to try one out of lace. I am pleased with it since it was my first time attempting anything like this.

To crochet this, I Googled a pattern for a rag rug. There are lots on-line. The one I used suggested that I begin with 22 chain. I knew that I wouldn't have enough lace to make anything too big, so I started with 7.

I used cotton lace.

And a very large crochet hook.

I also tried it on a table that my dad made for me. I still have not painted it yet. That's another decision I will have to make-- what color?

Curtain Makeover-- Get rid of the tabs

Before Christmas, I did another curtain makeover for Blake's bedroom. The curtain toppers had tabs and they just didn't look right. I used a pattern made by Simplicity #9846. I have used it before and I am yet to be disappointed in the results. Some of these pictures were taken at night, so it's difficult to get a really good picture.

This was the curtain that I started with: Two tabbed toppers and some brown material. I needed to add a strip of brown to the bottom to make them longer and to add a rod pocket on the top instead of the tabs.

I sewed the two curtains together as can be seen below. Then I sewed the strip on the bottom and added a brown lining as well. I made the folds as per the pattern and then sewed the rod pocket to the top.

Mickey Mouse Name Display

Since we were using the theme of Mickey Mouse, I did Blake's name in the design of Mickey. I used cardboard to cut the letters, card stock to cover them and hot glue to stick them to a piece of painted 4x4. Worked out great. Ears were added using painted Styrofoam balls attached with tooth picks.

Rice Crispy Mickey Pops

Rice Crispy cookies have been around forever and they are great to make cookie pops.

I began by making the cookies as per the instructions written on the box.

When they cooled a little, I cut them using a Mickey Mouse Cookie cutter. Do not leave them too long because they will be more difficult to cut. I dipped a stick in chocolate and put the stick into the cookie. I left them for a while to harden so that they wouldn't break when picked up.

Then I melted some chocolate and dipped the ears into it.

Put them into a plastic bag. Mine were too long so I had to cut them. Then I tied ribbon around the stick to hold the bag in place and finished it with a sticker on each side.

These are fun to make and they look great, but they are time consuming, so if you decide to do something like this make sure to give yourself enough time.

Chocolate Pops for Mickey Mouse Birthday

It is difficult to believe that a full year has passed since Blake was born. Today we had his first birthday party and if you saw the invitations you know that it's a Mickey Clubhouse Theme party. It took place at a swimming pool and the kids all enjoyed the pool.

As a party favour, I made some chocolate pops. I was not able to find a Mickey Mouse mould, so I used a happy face and attached pictures of Mickey. I saw an idea on a blog (... At Studio D) to make a box to stick them in so that's what I did. It looked something like the one I did.

I started with a shoe box that I just covered with Mickey Mouse colours. Then I put some Styrofoam in the box to stick the sticks in.

To make the Mickey Mouse that is stuck in the middle, I used Styrofoam balls, painted them black, and used tooth picks to keep the ears in place. I also used a wooden dowel to hold the Mickey Mouse head in the box.

The chocolate pops were made...

I printed some clip art from the internet and pasted them on black Bristol board, put the pops in bags and attached the tag by punching a whole in it and using ribbon

They were yummy!

Mickey's Lollipop Invitations

A couple of months ago, Allison and I were discussing what to do for Blake's first birthday. She had decided that she would like to have a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme, so the search for ideas began. I read somewhere about a lollipop invitation that was done in the shape of a lollipop with a stick. We decided to use a large lollipop and stick the invitation to it.

Here is the front and back of the invitation. I don't have any fancy cutting machines for scrap booking or card making, so we were forced to cut everything from templates we drew.

Trip Around the World

This quilt is one of several Trip Around the World quilts that I have done. It is an easy quilt to make and it can be completed in a relatively short period. I know people who have done one in a weekend, but not me. This one took me a couple of weeks from beginning to end. There are many patterns for this quilt on the internet and elsewhere and sometimes the patterns tend to complicate things. I am going to do the "Coles" version of doing a quilt like this.

Here is what it looked like in the end:

Materials for a Double sized quilt:

Select 7 colors that complement each other and buy 3/4 metre of each one. These make up the blocks in the quilt.

Select three colors for the borders. I prefer to select the colors that are in the quilt already. In this case I selected the solid colors for the borders. The borders are also different sizes so the amount of material varies.

Small inside border: 2" strips -- 1/2 metre
Middle border: 4 " strips-- 1 metre
Outside border: 4 1/2" strips-- 1 1/4 metre (Note: This border is optional and makes are a larger quilt. I bought a queen sized batting for this quilt since it is wider than a typical double sized batting)

(I know I am combining two measurements here. In Canada, material is sold by the meter, not by the yard. A yard is about 3" less than a metre. Yet, I normally use inches when measuring vs centimetres.)

Backing: I bought 6 meters to ensure that I had enough to do the binding.

Wash and dry all materials prior to cutting into strips to ensure that any shrinkage will occur prior to sewing.

Step 1: Cut the 7 colors for the main part of your quilt into 4 1/2 " strips. (5 Strips of each color).

I also like to make a swatch when using a pattern that refers to numbers. This pattern suggests arranging the colours from light to dark, which is what I have attempted to do.

Step 2: Sewing the first row.

Take one strip of each colour and sew them together in this order based upon the colours in your swatch: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2.

Step 3: Cutting the blocks of the first row.

Press the first row colours by pushing the seams away from colour 3.
Fold the piece so that it is easier to cut into strips.
Square the piece by cutting off a small strip at the top.

Now cut 8 strips from this piece. They will be 4 1/2" wide.

Lay the strips to one side. These will be your first row strips.

Step 4: Sewing the second row.

Take a strip of each colour and sew them together in this order: 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3. (Notice that for the first row it began with colour 3, the second row begins with colour 4 and ends with row 3.)

Step 5: Cutting the second row. Do the same as you did with the first row, also laying the 8 strips to one side.

Step 6: Sewing rows 3 to 7.

Again take a strip of each colour, sewing them in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Repeat this until all strips have been used.

Step 7: Tubing rows 3-7.

Before cutting rows 3-7, take each panel and sew it into a tube. That is sew colour 1 and colour 7 so that the colours make a tube.

Step 8: Cutting rows 3-7.

As you cut row 1 and 2, cut the tubed panels into 8 pieces each.
When they are cut, each will look like this.

Step 9: Cutting the tubes to make rows 3 to 7.

Row 3: Take 4 tubes and separate one seem so that the colours are in this order: 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4
Row 4: 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Row 5: 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Row 6: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Row 7: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1

Step 10: Sewing the rows together.

Make four squares by sewing rows 1-7 together.

Step 10: Rotate the four blocks so that colour 3 is pointing towards the centre.

Step 11: You will have noticed that you still have 4 row 1s and 4 row 2s left. Sew the row 1s to the row 2s.

Step 12: Sew 1 of these four to each of the square blocks on the end. This gives length to the quilt. The picture is not real clear, but enough that you see that I am prepared to add rows 1 and 2 to the top portion.

Step 13: Take one of the leftover tubes and open it so that it goes between the two boxes. Repeat this for the other half of the quilt as well.

Step 14: When to two half are completed, you will need to select a colour for the centre block. and make a strip that will complete the pattern when both halves are together. Now the pieces can be assembled to make your quilt.

Step 15: Add the borders. I usually do both ends first with the first colour and then add the same colour to the sides.

Step 16: Place the bottom of the quilt, the batting, and the top together and prepare it for top stitching as you would for any quilt. Then add the binding.

Once again, Lexi moves to the quilt. With great speed I might add.

Vintage Chains Quilt

I have finished another quilt-- this one has been 3 years in the making. It is one of those projects that often took the back burner to other things I was doing. I decided a couple of weeks ago that it had to be done before I started another. So here it is. The pattern that I used is on-line so I will post a link to the site.

The quilt is made up of two types of blocks. This is one of them-- The five patch chain. 20 of these are needed.

This is the other block- the Chain and Knot block. 30 of these are needed.

These are the triangles that are attached to each end of a row. The rows are actually assembled diagonally, instead of the typical horizontal row.

Lexi moves in to claim the quilt. Yes, she will probably spend many nights on this one.

Curtain Makeover- Scarf to Tab Topper

A little while ago, my aunt expressed interest in new curtains for her living room windows. She had some scarves there at the time. The material was nice with her décor, so instead of just buying more, we decided that a new look would do. I had a pattern that I had used a number of times that is nice and easy, so that' was the one we used. (It is Simplicity 9848-- Sewing Patterns for Dummies). I am not a bit offended by the pattern title, since what I do has been self taught.

Here goes. The first thing I did was get the window measurements and the pattern doesn't fit-- The largest pattern is too large and the smallest too small. Adjustments required. I would use the large sized pattern, but I would make adjustments to the size of the folds in the end. Oh yes, one other thing-- the pattern is designed so that the finished product is mounted to wood and mounted to the wall. We used tabs instead. The window was also long, so I moved the pattern down about 2 inches to add to the length.

As seen in the picture, the edges of the scarves were finished with a serger. As a result, I didn't really want to hem the bottom either. This fabric was thick with a plain back, so there was no need to line either.

I used some lace that I folded over the bottom edge.

Next I placed a measure tape next to the fabric- set to the required width of the finished topper. Using the pattern I calculated how much more I would have you use in the pleating to get the topper the correct size. As you see below, I put pins to mark the centre and the outside edges of the pleats-- about 3/4 inch more on each side.

I took the left pin and pulled the fabric in to the centre pin. Then did the same on the right. This was done for each section of the topper (as required by pattern). Then I pinned the pleat down to hold it in place.

Then I took a piece of lace and attached it over the top.

I made some tabs as well by cutting a piece of fabric 4 1/2 inched wide and the length of the fabric. I sewed it lengthwise with right sides facing. I cut them the length that I wanted for them to hang on the rod. I turned the tabs right side out and attached them to the back of the topper. Sewed across the top.

Nunavut Quilt

While teaching in Nunavut in a small community of Qikiqtarjuak, I decided to make a Northern Quilt to attempt to capture as much about the culture as possible. Most of these pictures were traced from internet or children's books. Unfortunately, I don't know right now what they are. I used a black fabric marker to trace them and then Crayola crayons to color them. After the pictures were done, I used brown paper and an iron to seal the crayon. This is done by placing the brown paper on the quilt and ironing over it.

When selecting the colors, I tried to get it to correspond with the colors in the pictures. After sewing together, I quilted it.
