Just as "Jingle Bells" filled the air during Yuletide, the sound of Chinese drums and cymbals and the tune, "T'sai Shen Tau" (The God if Prosperity has arrived) takes over as the Chinese Community gears up for the fifteen day-long Spring Festival Celebration.

On the 9th day of Spring Festival, it is Tian Gong (the Heaven God)Festival especially for the Hokkiens. There is a story behind this festival:

During a Chinese New year of the Ming Dynasty, there was a bandit raid in the province of Hokkien. These intruders however robbed and burned down villages, attacked and killed the villagers. The people of the villages were in fear and escaped from their burnt villages during the night.

Some of the villagers then hid themselves among the sugarcane fields. Needless to say, those villagers prayed to Heaven God (Tian Gong) for salvation during their hideout. The pursuing intruders spent many days trying to locate and hunt them but to no avail. On the ninth day of that Chinese New Year, they finally gave up and returned to their region.

The Hokkiens then happily emerged from the sugar cane fields, and praising the blessings of the celestial deities and owing gratitude to the sugarcane plants for saving them from destruction. Thus, in all Hokkien celebrations, the sugarcane plant is given prominence.

Realizing that it was also the 9th Day of the Chinese New Year and coincidentally the birthday of Heaven God, they decided to make votive offerings and prayers to the Jade Emperor for their salvation. There are many version of the Hokkiens’ Bai Tian Gong stories. Whichever it is, the hokkiens believe that our life and prosperity are granted by the Heaven God.

On the eve of the 9th day, a pair of sugarcane plants are used by the Hokkiens usually placed one on each side of the offering table or the front door of the house. The pair of the sugarcane symbolises unity, cooperation and strength. The sugarcane itself is a symbol of harmony and a token which can bring good and ‘sweet’ results. The very straightness of the sugarcane stem also ensures that the Hokkiens can become a clan of honest and sincere people.

Chew Jetty was the hottest spot which have the longest table for worship used in Penang. After Chew Jetty has being listed in UNESCO Heritage Site, it attracts more tourists and local people to get there. The organizing community put more and more effort from year to year.

This is part of the huge size joystick made in dragon-shaped.

In Chinese, it is called as 龙香 (long-xiang), literally means dragon joystick. I couldn't find what it is called in English. Historically, the dragon was the symbol of the Emperor of China.

Due to the believe that the Dragon is the rulers of water and weather, this kind of joystick which is taller than the normal height of human beings is a must in Chinese worship ceremony.

When the worship ceremony is going on, the environment turns into strict.

The worship ceremony in Chew Jetty is different with what we have in our home. It was my first time been there and it was a nice experience for me. I also get to enjoy the night scene there since it was also my first time to visit Chew Jetty at night.

Time swift. It's the 21th day of year 2011 today.

This year is going to lead a hectic life that I have never been. 7 new classmates in my class and they are have actually make the great parts for our class unlike last year. Study, the only thing that I do in school nowadays. Homework, the only trouble that I meet at home nowadays. I only make myself be on net for 2 hours on weekdays.See, how working am I~! =D

I have nothing much to talk about today because all I have got these days are just study. I know it is boring but what to do? Of course, I couldn't make myself stay at home for the whole month. I am going out this Sunday! It must be fun. I am looking forward and hope it won't be raining. Curios of what will I be doing? Stay tuned for my next blog post~! hehe.

Oh ya, back to the topic. I picked this photo as the photo of the blog post because I would like to share it to you guys. Dweey, the name for it. It looks very cute, doesn't it? You can actually draw it yourself on the toy. Yea, it is a toy. Left one belonged to him whereas the right one is mine. ♥

This new year countdown seems to be special for me this year because it was not my parents beside me, but him. My parents started to get bored of those hot and rock during countdown events. They claimed that they can also enjoy those fireworks at home.

It was my first time been to Gurney Hotel and I was not the only one not in formal wear...=X I think I should apologize for it.
As usual, time for photography~!=D It was my second experience of using Nikon D40X in manual mode but most of the settings were too bad that most people looked dark in the photos.

Flora Festival

Last Sunday was my first time being to Penang Flora Festival in Botanical Garden and I was also the first time of mine using DSLR in manual mode. I went there with my bf and some friends while I was the youngest among them. For me, time flies and I will be growing up like them too so it is just depend on the range of age of those people you join.

My bf got his lens longer than me and he was able to take better photos than mine. He said that lens was not the main thing effect the photos but skills. We met some elders when we was capturing photos under a canopy when it was raining heavily. They reminded of their young time like us having DSLR and went around shooting for photos.

After waiting for years, I still could not have my own DSLR but I got the chance to use DSLR now. I am still learning using it so those photos were not very nice. Please don't feel hesitate if you feel like sharing your experience with me. ^^

I has been away for 3 days and staying and spending my time with my cute juniors in school during this period. It was the second time we spent our time in school together and I appreciate every single moment with you guys. Dad has became chef of the day again. He went to market and bought some ingredients home last few weeks ago. The menu was STEAMBOAT~! It sounds tasty. *yummy yummy* Unfortunately, I could not share it here. XD

What is it? It was so colourful that I did not dare to eat it because I scared that it was colouring.

Dumplings. Well, I went to look for translation from Chinese to English on Google and the result was " water dumpling ". I went to told mum about that and mum turned to tell me that don't be kidding. =X

My dad actually prepared all of these for praying God and we have the chance the enjoy eating after praying. It has been such a long time that we have eaten steamboat before this. If not mistaken, it was Chinese New Year eve. Hope that I could enjoy steamboat soon~! ^^

This lady has been tortured by year-end exam for around 3 weeks and now she is back~!

wohoo~ I am free now! On last 3 weeks, I got more than 11 subjects to study and I had to study 3 subjects each nights before the examinations. That's what people call as lazy people do last minute work. I don't study when there is no examination but I have to work very hard when it comes. Of course, my results won't be better than those who always study even though it is no examinations.

Well, after suffering, it is time to have fun! I went to Queensbay Mall on Wednesday and Prangin Mall on Thursday. I finally have got the chance to watch movie on Wednesday and it was "You Again". On the next day, I went to buy dress with mum. However, I could not get my favourite dress because mum complaint that it was too short and finally I got to buy her favourite dress. I was wondering who was the one wanted to buy dress.

I went to visit the baby sister who used to take care of me when I was baby and I met these two little cute kids.

I am going out for my friend's house warming and birthday celebration tomorrow. Party time~!

Today is World Kindness day. Have you done your part?

Flowers

My mum brought a flower plant home last month. The leaves of the plant are used to cook as Chinese herbal.The flowers were such adorable.

However, all flowers were gone when I went home from school on the next day. Mum has actually pluck them off included the leaves. She claimed that it is good for their growth. One day, two days, three days, day by day has gone, but the growth of the plant didn't seem have any change. My mum started to feel regret. On week later, it finally got some leaves.

My mum smiled. She said she will never them off again.

They born in natural. They grow naturally. Why should us disturb them?

Home-made Pan Mee

Pan Mee is a special Malaysian Chinese cuisine and it is typically served in soup with some side dishes. Yesterday was Sunday and my dad had nothing to do at home. He was so free to volunteer himself to be the chef for our lunch.

He woke up early in the morning and went to market to buy ingredients.

Finally, home-made Pan Mee was done.

My dad used to cook Pan Mee as lunch every Sunday but the making of Pan Mee is tiring because many energy will be used up. Thus, it has been long time ago when he cooked for us. This lunch needed only a little cost but it was delicious for us.

God of Wealth, which is known as Tsai Shen Yeh can be seen in many Chinese and oriental houses and buildings, most of the times near their entrances helping them attract wealth and prosperity to those places as well as acting as a protection to their environments and the income which comes to them.

It is a sculpture for God of Wealth that my dad brought home few years ago. It had broken cap on his head, broken ears and broken face. How pity it was!

My dad left it aside for few years and he was suddenly thought of making it to be completed sculpture. Thus, he brought back some plaster and started his mission~!

I got my hair cut last Sunday. This time, I let my fringe gone. = )
The phone was presented by him. He got it on Youth Jam'10 and he gave me.
My old phone has spoiled and his phone also got some problem but he still gave me.
Mama was shocked to know it when we told her about it.
It is the phone that I ♥. Actually I ♥ Corby but this one looks like Corby and cheaper than Corby. Well, it's OK for me as long as it is given by him. XD
I want to buy a plastic cover to protect my phone,earphone to listen to music and radio. I don't think that I will get them in short time because mum doesn't let me to have part-time job on the year-end holidays due to SPM 2011. Don't you think that it's too early to worry about it? I want to take exam for car license but she disallowed me to do so because she said I have to focus on my study. Hey, then who going to fetch me here and there? Who so free to be my driver? Are you?

MALAYSIA, a country which has a well geographical position between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, has traditionally been a meeting place for traders and travelers from the East and West. As a result, Malaysia has a multicultural and multiracial population consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and numerous indigenous peoples. A truly Malaysian cultural has been create since all of us have lived together on this land for generations and all our cultures have influenced each other in our daily life. Racial unity and interaction in our country has formed a diverse society that is absolutely unique.

Most of us in this country understand Malay language and English Language. Although we are different form one another and most of us speak mother tongues in daily life, but we are having some sort of national character like using the ubiquitous expression of “-lah” at the end of each sentence. For instance, “makanlah” in Malay language, “chi-lah” in Chinese language which both also bring the meaning of asking someone to eat.

Malaysians are always being kind to strangers especially when they are foreigners. Ty to asking for direction and can be sure Malaysian will direct the visitors to the place right they are looking for.

The only problem is Malaysian will use the local landmarks to direct the visitors who know nothing about the landmarks.

What do foreigners love about Malaysia? Here, they don’t have to live in tension like advanced country. They are able to relax their mind and enjoy themselves here. The beautiful scenery in villages, delicious local food and delightful festival are the attractions of our country to them.

Malaysians practices their own religion and belief according to their ethnics. Various festivals are celebrated throughout the year. These festivals are usually celebrated either nationwide or at state level. "Open house" concept is practiced almost all the festivals, which means inviting relatives and friends to partake in the food and festivity occasion.

This month, there are two festivals going on in this country: Fasting Month for Malay and Hungry Ghost Festival for Chinese. For Muslims community in Malaysia, Ramadan is one of the very important occasion and holy month. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The cycle of Ramadan usually last for about a month, after which Muslims will celebrate Aidil-Fitri (The traditional Malay festivals - Hari Raya Puasa). The Ghost Festival is celebrated during the seventh month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Live performances are held and the first row of seats is always empty as this is where the ghosts sit. The shows like Chinese opera and dramas are always put on at night and at high volumes as the sound attract and please the ghosts.

Malaysia, our home, our country, is where people of different religion, country and race live in a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. We may have different faces, speak different languages, practice different religion and belief, but all of us come together as one. One community, one nation, one Malaysia.

YOUTH JAM'10

Penang Largest Merdeka Youth Carnival was held on 29 August and 30 August @ Penang Time Square.
I am proud to be one of them even though there is some unhappy problems happened on the event date.

I had a chance to talk with our Timbalan Menteri II Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi, Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah on the first day.However, I just managed to intro myself and I realised that I don't have any target in my life. Photographers were a lot among us. I wish to be photographer. It is my dream since 2 years ago and it is still my dream now. There was also one future leader and one future lecturer among us. I missed some of them because I joined them later on. All of them have their own passion and I am the only exception.

I used to be in charged of registration but I was in Dance Fair with Sherlyn, Khui Ching, Yan Yun, Angeline and Guo Zhu in the end. I felt sorry to the Ms emcee because I knew nothing and she had to lead me all over the Dance Fair. I spent my time and money in contacting the dance studios. After that, I just found out that I have forgotten my assistant and he was left aside. The laptop that we used got problem and I couldn't find any but I just managed to find Joshua for his netbook. Sigh. No music for shuffle in it. Fortunately, there was one ipod of a dancer from dance studio.

I was late to Youth Jam'10 on the second day because of schooling. I go nothing to in-changed on that day so I was actually hanging around with friends.

One more thing to regret: I didn't stay up until the whole event end because mum had to wake up early in the next morning. He got a new phone for me. Samsung GenoA replaced my Nokia.

Ancestor Worship

"The Chinese have always been interested in their past -- worship of ancestors is worship of origins." (Heinz 1999:225)

Ancestral veneration in Chinese cultural,as well as ancestor worship , seeks to honor the deeds and memories of the deceased. During the seventh month which is also known as Hungry Ghost Month, it is believed that the doors between our world and limbo are open for spirits to pass through and do as they wish. During this time it is customary to offer sacrifices of food or money to keep them appeased. It is thought that the family owes a kind of debt to the deceased family which must be paid through offerings. The money sacrificed to the spirits is printed on paper and will be burnt in public area like roadside. The ancestors that have nothing sacrificed to them may become "hungry" and cause bad luck for their neglectful family. Thompson wrote of the importance of ancestral sacrifices because of the length of this period of roaming malevolent ghosts. (Thompson, 1979) In China, the practice of ancestor worship has existed since ancient times and it emphasizes respect for senior family members.

My grandpa is a Chinese from China and he came to Malaysia for living when he was young. He built his second home in Penang with my grandma, a Malaysian who is born in Kuala Lumpur. I am the second generation of this family who born in Malaysia. I never met my grandpa before because he has passed away before my dad and mum got married. Even my mum also never met him before. My grandma left us when I was a baby and I could not remember how she looked like. I respect my grandpa and grandma the most although I never see them before. In my opinion, they were ancestors of my family whom made the most contribution to the future generation.

It was time for ancestor worship.

The last meeting for Youth Jam'10, Penang Largest Merdeka Youth Carnival was held yesterday.
Thanks his mum for fetching me again.

This wall post make me think of being a photographer again but I am always lack of DSLR and the skills. I have been wishing to own a DSLR and improve my photography but I am still using a compact camera now. LOL. Lets see when only my dream will come true.

These girls finally have attend meeting. wohoo~ but I just managed to capture photos of three of them. = )

Bon Odori

Obon or just Bon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori.
Bon Odori Festivals are celebrated every year in Penang. In comparison to the celebrations in Japan, the festival is celebrated on a much smaller scale in Penang, and is less associated with Buddhism and more with Japanese culture. Held mainly to expose locals to a part of Japanese culture, the festival provides the experience of a variety of Japanese food and drinks, art and dance. It has been celebrated in Penang many years but my mum and I never attend it until this year. Even though it rained, but it couldn't wipe off the curiosity in our hearts. We wanted to know what is it and do people celebrate it.

After we reached there, open ceremony not yet started and we went to visit the booths there. Yummy yummy food, unique handicraft and fun games were there. After that, we went in front of the main stage and listen to the speeches. It was the second time for mum to see YAB Lim Guan Eng with her own eyes. I asked her " handsome, right? " ans she smiled to me. LOL.

Turned around and I saw the ladder specially made for photographers. Some people hid themselves under it for shelter and I noticed there were two cute Japanese girls. I went near them and took photos of them. On the first take, one girl did actually noticed me and she posed to me while another was playing with her balloons. On the second take, the girl who was playing balloon realised what was I doing and pose to me too~!

After the open ceremony on stage, performances are presented. They were playing musical instrument, dancing and singing as performances.

After spending a few hours there, mum started to feel tired so we went home early before the fireworks. I wish I could attend this event again next year but mum said that she is not going anymore. She asked me to go myself or go dating with my bf if I want to go again. LOL. Oh ya, we did met my bf and we went around together. I got the chance to use DSLR again. The one he used was much more heavier than the one I used. I tried on his when he went to toilet. I managed to capture some photos but I couldn't hold it too long because it is too heavy for me. I felt proud of myself that I could take nice photos with DSLR too but he splashed me with cool water that he had set the setting for me. =.= ok. fine. I hope I have more chances to learn on photography.

Youth Jam'10~

I attended Youth Jam meeting at KDU last afternoon and went to Digi Live Tour at Queensbay Mall carpark to distribute the brochure and intro the youths there about Youth Jam.

It was my first time talking to strangers and ask them to join us on the event date.

I have made 4 ladies who actually only just replied me "oh...ok" started to ask more about Youth Jam and show their interested in taking part some of the events.

I had the opportunity to go to the backstage too~ Great experience there~

Attended AGM in school last Saturday.
The meeting ended earlier and we went to Tea Boutique for lunch.

I have rotten in house for few days beside going out for some hang out with friends in this holidays.
When I am not going out, what I do everyday during the holidays are wake up without alarm, switch on my computer, wash up, check mails, plurk, facebook, msn, have my breakfast, continue facebook, drink my milo, facebook again and sometimes youtube, bath, facebook again, have lunch, facebook or youtube and msn, bath, facebook and msn, have dinner, sit in front of computer again or go to tuition class if have any, have supper in front of computer, sleeping time~! *Just ignore these craps ^^*

Let's go to the topic- Youth Jam meeting @ KDU.
Finally I have got something to do in my boring holidays. yey~
First of all, I should thank aunty and his sister to fetch me since I don't have transport get there because my mum couldn't leave her hawker stall.
Sometimes hopping rapid around the island is quite dangerous when you are alone and you don't really know where your destination located at.
JohnShen and I were the earliest volunteer to reach there and we met Jazz and Ginger in the hall before we moved to room 106.

IMPORTANT POINTS~

When is it?
Penang Largest Merdeka Youth Carnival 2010 is going to be held 0n 29 August and 30 August.
On the first day, it is going to be started at 10 am till 10 pm, 12 hours.
On the second day, will be at 6pm till 12am.

Where is it?
Penang Time Square.

The meeting ended around 4 o'clock and we went back home.
