TeamFAB has been grinding for almost two months now. My wife is work-from-home while I'm in a skeletal reporting set up. We feel that there's a need to de-stress and take a pause for a while. While I'm searching for a probinsya like camp ground, I found a secret place in Amadeo which is exclusive for 4-6 persons, budget friendly and no swab test needed. My wife immediately booked for an overnight stay, HOOLA, we're the first visitors of this newly opened campground.
The place is as simple as backyard but during night time, the view becomes INSTAGRAMABLE because of its rustic theme and lighting.

At the “Of Rocks and Light”

Batangas is one of the most popular tourist destinations near Metro Manila. It is home to the famous Taal Volcano, one of the Decade Volcanoes, and Taal Heritage town, a small picturesque town that has ancestral houses and structures dating back to the 19th century. It was Thursday night when we started to plan to trek Mt. Batulao.

Batulao, the mountain named after two tagalog words: Bato at Ilaw which means in english, "Of Rocks and Light"; eventually meant of the grandiose sunset that can only be seen right at between two of its rocky peaks.

The starting point of the trek is at Evercrest Golf Course, easily accessible by bus from Manila. We walked for 30 minutes to jump off.

We chose the new trail. At the starting point of the climb, I fell in love with the mountain. The view was perfect. No doubt why people love to drop by and climb the mountain. The entrance fee was 20 pesos each. Walking thru the new trail, we saw some marks about the numbered peaks. Some parts of the trail can be scary because it was too narrow. The trail goes up-down, up-down. With this kind of mountain, you better wear sunblock, caps and long sleeves if you don’t want to get sunburn.

Climbers can enjoy drinking buko juice and soft drinks that are sold in the area.

It took us 2 hours and 50 mins to reach the summit! Hooray! We did it. The view was fantastic!

Mt. Batulao is a highly recommended option for those wishing to go trekking in the Philippines.

Way points:

Batangas City is 2 1/2 hours away from Manila when using the old inter town route. Using the STAR Tollway route, one can reach Batangas City for just 1 1/2 hour. Tanauan City is about 1 hour away and in between Tanauan City and Batangas City, one will find Lipa City. ALPS The Bus, Inc. is one of the many bus companies that travels the said route.

Travelers can take air-conditioned buses in going to Batangas City. Those who want to go to Nasugbu, Calatagan and Lian towns (Matabungkay) can pass via the Tagaytay route.

Travelers going to Puerto Galera can take direct air con buses from Manila (Cubao) to Batangas pier. The best services are BLTB (every hour) and JAM transit (also every hour) from the Kamuin Cubao bus station. Sometimes, especially during peak hours, buses run every 30 minutes. The last stop is a Batangas pier.

When driving one's own vehicle to Tanauan-Lipa-Batangas City, travelers will pass through the South Luzon Expressway, then the STAR Tollway and can just follow the directional signs along the highway.

The Philippines consists of 7,107 islands, and a coastline twice the length of that of the United States, the Philippines can claim to be Asia's Beach Capital. Before summer 2013 comes, I visited Palm Beach Resort at Barangay Hugom, San Juan Batangas. This place caters activities like boat riding, banana boat riding, snorkelling, kayaking and jetski riding.

It is a combination of privately owned homes and resort facilities to serve the needs of its residents and guests. Palm trees and Talisay trees dominate the green landscape that hugs the white buildings of concrete, wood and glass. Along the sandy resort road, opposite the buildings, the bamboo-floored, cogon-roofed open cabanas wait for guests beside the beach.

VISITING THE OLDEST SETTLEMENT ESTABLISHED BY THE SPANIARDS

Over the weekend, I had a day trip in Metro Cebu. I prepared my to-do list and part of this is Magellan’s Cross, Mactan Shrine and a glimpse of Su Tu Kil Restaurant beside the shrine.

Chapel of the Cross

Magellan's Cross is one of the historical places in Metro Cebu. It was planted by Ferdinand Magellan when he arrived at Cebu City on 21st April, 1521. The Magellan's Cross is kept in a small chapel, which is next to Basilica Minore del Santo Nino.

It is believed by some people that the cross is the replica of the original one. Magellan's Cross is a popular tourist attraction of Cebu City.

The cross is now used by Cebu City Hall as a symbol and the image of Magellan's Cross can be seen in the seal of the city. There are more places of tourist interests in close vicinity of Magellan's Cross.

The 486-year-old cross is now housed inside a small chapel or kiosk located across from the Cebu City Hall along Magellanes Street, beside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The original cross brought by Magellan is encased in a tindalo wood cross that stands at the center of the chapel. This was done to protect the original cross from devotees who, believing the cross to be miraculous, started chipping off pieces of it.

Ferdinand Magellan was the first European who visited Philippines in the year 1521. When Magellan, along with his crew, arrived at Cebu, he was greeted by Rajah Humabon. During that time Rajah Humabon along with his wife and 800 natives was Christianized. Magellan planted a cross to signify this event.

There is a sign below the Magellan's Cross. According to the sign, the original cross is encased in the tindalo wood cross displayed in the center of the chapel. According to some people, the original cross had been destroyed and the existing cross is the replica of the original one. On the ceiling of the kiosk, where the cross has been displayed, the tourists can see painting that depicts landing of Ferdinand Magellan in Cebu. The planting of the cross has also been displayed in the roof paintings.

Beside the shrine is Basilica Minor Del Santo Nino - built by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Fr. Andres Urdaneta on the site where the image of Santo Niño was found in 1565. The church was however destroyed by fire on November 1, 1568 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1602 under the administration of Juan Albaran and was rehabilitated in 1740.

On May 1965, the church was conferred the title of Basilica Minor del Santo Niño by Cardinal Antonuitte, Papal Legate during the Fourth Centennial celebration of the Christianization of Cebu.

In 1521 Ferdinand Magellan gave the Santo Nino Image to Queen Juana as a baptismal gift. Some 40 years later in 1565 Miguel Lopez arrived in Cebu and on finding the natives extremely hostile (arguably due to the actions of the Spanish Invaders) he and his army besieged the settlement and set fire to it.

It was in one of these burnt out homes that a soldier Juan Camus found the image of the Santo Nino unscathed. From that point the Cebuanos have venerated the image as their Patron Saint.

The image is kept in the Parish Convent and a replica adorned with gold and precious stones and enshrined behind glass is housed in a side alter inside the Basilica Minor Del Santo Nino.

Inspired by his success in bringing Christianity to the people of Cebu, Ferdinand Magellan crossed the narrow channel to Mactan Island in an effort to spread the Catholic faith.

Whilst still wading to the shore, he was killed by island chieftain Lapu Lapu leading his army of men during the battle for supremacy and freedom on April 27, 1521. Magellan's body was never recovered and in 1866 a marker was erected as a monument to this great explorer, marking the spot that Magellan was slain.

There is a great deal spoken with regards to the Hero of the Philippines, Chief Lapu Lapu, much of it surrounded in myth and legend.

It is a big memorial tower approximately 30 meters high, put up to commemorate the great Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. The spot is purportedly where Magellan was killed.

However this is a nice place to visit the grounds are very well kept and you can have a great seafood meal in one of the several fish restaurants next to the shrine. I tried the Mana Su Tu Kil Restaurant. The food was great for very affordable price. They serve sea foods cooked in variety of presentations.

Another place beside the shrine is boutique of seashells decorations. Why not check out the shell vendors just outside the shrine and marvel at the exquisite designs made purely from shells.

Meanwhile I notice that it was already nine in the evening and I have to leave the restaurant because my flight going back to Manila is at 9:45.

A daily flight from Manila to Cebu.

From Cebu International Airport, Magellan's Cross is located in front of Cebu City Hall. The tourists can reach the spot by availing taxis. Public transport is also available to reach the area. Jeeps can also be availed to reach Magellan's Cross in Cebu.

Mactan Shrine is located in the north-eastern part of the island. From Cebu, one can traverse using the 2 connecting bridges. The easiest is taking the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge (New Bridge). Take the road going north (to Mactan Export Processing Zone 1) and just follow the main road. About 5 kilometers you will reach the Mactan Shrine. It’s a well-known landmark and asking directions from the locals would be easy.

ATTEND LECHON PARADE AND GET WET!

Balayan is a first class municipality in the Province of Batangas, Philippines. Balayan is bounded by Tuy on the north; and Lian on the west, Calaca on the east and the Balayan Bay on the south. The town is rich among the natural resources of sugarcanes, coconuts and corn. Significant events includes the Parada ng Lechon (every June 24) and the Feast of Immaculate Conception celebrated every December 8 of the year. Widely known products originating from the area include the Bagoong Balayan.

The Parada ng Lechon (roasted pig parade) is one of the festivals in the Philippines. Every 24^th day of the month of June, Parada ng Lechon celebrated in Balayan Batangas, and the feast day of San Juan (Saint John the Baptist).

Lechon is one of Batangas delicacy, and even in other provinces in the Philippines such as Cebu and La Loma Quezon City. It’s a main dish most Batagueños have for celebrations or fiestas. According to the old villager, lechon was served before the Spanish arrived in the Philippines. The dish became a symbol of Batangas tradition to serve lechon during celebrations.

These succulent roasted pork form the highlight of the parade ng Lechon, decked out in their platforms with all kinds of décor. Since the Lechon Parade coincides with the feast of St. John the Baptist, be prepared to get wet as people observe the feast by repeating the ritual of baptism - pouring water. Lechon is a roasted whole pig or cattle cooked in charcoal and are the national food of the Philippines. Lechon are cooked during national festivities (known as Barrio Fiestas) and holiday season. Lechon was originally a Spanish cuisine and can be found in many other Hispanic countries. Leche means milk in Spanish and lechon originally meant suckling piglet.

In the Philippines, it is not unusual for lechon or whole roast pig to grace any Filipino fiesta table. Parada ng Lechon is a parade of golden-red and crispy roasted pigs. The delicious aroma of this sumptuous dish made more favourite.

On the event day itself, a mass is held at the Immaculate Conception Church. After the mass, at least, large numbers of lechon are gathered in anticipation of the celebration. The parade proceeds after the holding of blessing of the pigs and people in St. Johns' name. At this celebration, one can witness a hilarious sight when the roast pigs are dressed according to the theme of the participating social organizations. Some of the lechon are inspired like chef, donut, surfer, Filipina, motor cycle rider this year.

In an event of sheer madness such as this, one can expect mischief just around the corner. During the celebration, pranksters toss water or beer over the lechons, drenching not only the lechons, but the bearers and onlookers as well. Some will even attempt to have a free sample of the roast pig's prized crispy skin.

Dousing of water during the festival is to signify the baptism of Jesus by St. John the Baptist. The festival is a religious ceremony for the villagers of Balayan. It also gives a place for trade-off to happen.

Now, the parade and merry making starts on the streets of Balayan. While the parade passes by the streets, bystanders will drench the participants with water. Bystanders are even free to take a piece of the lechon while on parade. These make the occasion exciting and extraordinary.

After the fiesta, the lechons are then brought back to their respective home for yet another celebration of drinking and feasting. As for those who believe in the spirit of sharing, they will gracefully give away their prized lechons to the crowd of audience. But be extra careful, the lechon is rich with cholesterol and might put your health into trouble.

You can also try the bus bound for Lemery, terminals are found near Buendia LRT Station. Once you are already in Lemery, ride a bus going to Nasugbu and alight at Balayan or ride a jeepney bound to Balayan.

At the end of two days retreat, it helps me reach a whole new level of living. I move up out of chronic frustration, fear, anger, sadness, boredom, anxiety, grief, powerlessness, depression and other lower vibrations to peace, joy, or even bliss. Issues resolve, life circumstances transform to match my new, higher vibration--and it not only lasts, it keeps expanding forever after. As an educator, it made me clear how heavy my responsibility in guiding and being a parent to more than hundreds of students.

Life is Colorful at Hot Air Balloon Festival

Once again, this is another late post about my tour. Last February 2011, I attended the 16^th Hot Air Balloon Festival. Leaving Manila early morning we arrived at Angeles Pampanga just exactly before the start of the show.

In 1994, three years after the devastating effects of the Mount Pinatubo eruption, Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor together with Korean businessman and hot-air balloon pilot, Mr. Sung Kee Paik, and British Airways General Manager, Mr. John Emery, and the German aviation enthusiast Max Motschmann engineered the Philippine International hot air balloon festival to help jumpstart the local economy and spirit of the Central Luzon region with the commitment of developing hot air ballooning as an aviation sport in the country and making the Philippines one of the leading sports aviation and travel destinations in the Asia Pacific region.

The Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is an annual event that occurs between January and February at the Omni Aviation Complex in Clark Field, Angeles City, Pampanga. It features multicolored hot air balloons with more than a hundred balloon pilots from around the world. This three to four day hot air balloon event is the biggest aviation sports event in the Philippines.

The festival also features a number of events in skydiving, flag jumps, micro light and rocketry demonstrations, small plane fly-bys and fly-ins, remote-control airplane and helicopter flying exhibitions, freestyle aerobatics, precision maneuvers, light airplane balloon bursting, ultra-light flying formation and bomb dropping, kite-making and choreographed kite-flying, hi-start launch gliding, pylon racing, banner towing, aero-modeling symposium and races between ultra lights and motorcycles.

Colorful balloons will start to invade the morning sky and after that numerous sky activities can be watched like para-gliding, sky diving, aircraft formation flying, aerobatic display, kite flying exhibition etc.

What makes a hot air balloon? The main parts of a hot air balloon are the envelope, the basket and the burner. The envelope is the fabric gas bag which is usually made of light-weight and strong synthetic fabrics. Attached to the envelope is the basket or what they call gondola, too. Obviously, this is where it carries people. The basket is usually made of woven wicker or rattan because these materials are proven light and durable for balloon flights. Lifting the balloon up in the air, we need a burner. It is mounted above the basket and centered in the mouth. This is the main fuel of the flight well aside from the wind. The burner is fuelled by propane and liquefied gas.

Currently, the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival continues to be a popular international sports aviation event. The 2006 festival featured 30 multicolored hot air balloons and more than a hundred balloon pilots from Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. It also drew an approximated 60,000 visitors to the event.

By Land:

Clark is located 80 kilometers north of Manila and is reachable by land or air. Driving by car from Manila takes an hour and a half. Take the North Luzon Expressway and exit at Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga. Make a left turn toward Angeles City and then a right turn toward Clark

Clark may also be reached via the new Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). From the North Luzon Expressway, continue the drive leading to the SCTEX exit. You may use either the Clark North Interchange (Panday Pira access road near Nayong Pilipino) or Clark South Interchange (near Yokohama and Clark Main Gate) to enter Clark. From Clark, via the newly-opened Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, you can reach Subic within a 30-minute drive and the Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac in 15 minutes.

Public buses also ply the routes on a daily basis. Ride a Victory Liner bound for Dagupan and alight at Dau common terminal. Walk a bit toward the highway where jeepneys or tricycles are available. These vehicles can take you right up the Clark gate. Another bus line, Philippine Rabbit, also has trips to Angeles, Pampanga, via Dau, and other buses going north may also pass by the area. Ask the driver or conductor beforehand to be sure.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park - One of the New7Wonders of Nature

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 kilometres (30 mi) north of the city centre of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. The river also called Puerto Princesa Underground River. The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the northern coast of the island. It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east.

The City Government of Puerto Princesa has managed the National Park since 1992. The entrance to the Subterranean River is a short hike from the town of Sabang.

The park has a limestone karst mountain landscape. Main attraction here is St. Pauls Underground River Cave - more than 24 km long cave, which contains an 8.2 kilometers long underground section of Cabayugan River. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea and is navigable with a boat up to 4 kilometers deep from the sea. The cave includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers, including the 360 m long Italian's Chamber with approximate 2.5 million square meters volume - one of the largest cave rooms in the world.

The Park has a range of forest formations representing eight of the thirteen forest types found in tropical Asia, namely forest over ultramafic soils, forest over limestone soils, montage forest, freshwater swamp forest, lowland evergreen tropical rainforest, riverine forest, beach forest, and mangrove forest.

Birds comprise the largest group of vertebrates found in the park. Of the 252 bird species known to occur in Palawan, a total of 165 species of birds were recorded in the park.

There are also some 30 mammal species that have been recorded (Madulid, 1998). Most often observed in the forest canopy and along the shoreline feeding during low tide is the long-tailed macaque, the only primate found in the area. Other mammal species in the park are the bearded pig, bearcat, Palawan stink badger and the Palawan porcupine.

Nineteen species of reptiles have been identified, eight of which are endemic (Madulid, 1998). Common species in the area include large predators like the common reticulated python, the monitor lizard and the green crested lizard. Amphibian fauna include ten species. The Philippine woodland frog is the most dominant and frequently encountered. One species, Barbourula busuangensis, endemic to Palawan was also observed in the area.

Notable are the nine species of bats, two species of swift lets and whip spider found in the cave, and the sea cow and the hawksbill sea turtle that feed in the coastal area of the park.

The boat journey round the coast to the cave entrance allows you to see some picturesque jungle like something out of Jurassic Park. Then there are the monitor lizards and monkeys that can sometimes be seen.

While inside the river, you’ll notice that the waters are as crystal clear as Palawan's beaches and the images formed by the stalactites and stalagmites are amazing.

They have very nice bangkeros with nice sense of humours because you won’t be bored while you're taking the tour inside the underground river even if the place was very quiet.

Puerto Princesa Underground River was entered as the Philippine entry - and topped the first round of voting - in the New7Wonders of Nature competition, and on July 28, 2011, after the second round of voting, it was declared 1 of 28 finalists. Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn extended his gratitude to all those who supported and voted for the Puerto Princesa Underground River.

I am one of the promoters of this beautiful place when I asked my students to vote during the whole year campaign. Part of my requirement in my subject actually is on line voting.

By Air

From Manila there are 3 -5 flights daily (morning and afternoon) to Puerto Princesa. You can choose between Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines and Cebu-Pacific. Cebu Pacific is servicing also 3 to 4 times weekly the route Cebu-Puerto Princesa-Cebu.

Also Seair is connecting Puerto Princesa with other destinations in Palawan (Busuanga, El Nido) and from there also with Manila.

By Land

Negros Navigation is sailing the route Manila to Puerto Princesa once a week, leaving every Thursday in Manila and arrives in Puerto Princesa on Friday (return to MNL the next day).WGA Superferry is sailing from Manila every Friday and arrives Saturday morning in Puerto Princesa.

A Ferry travel can be recommended very much if you have a lot of time and if you are enjoying travel on the Sea. The trip takes around 24 hours. There are nice cabins available on these ships. At Coron the Ferry will make a short stop over.

How to go from Puerto Princesa to Sabang

Sabang is located on the South-China Sea side of Palawan. It is 80 km away from the City going North-West (Sabang is still part of Puerto Princesa City; even the village is that remote). The trip will take about 2 - 4 hours by Van or Jeepney.

On the way to Sabang you will see amazing Nature and beautiful landscapes. The first 40 km it goes on the new Highway connecting Puerto Princesa with Roxas in the North. In Salvacion is the junction to Sabang.

Public Transportation:

Public jeepneys are leaving for Sabang at the new Public Bus Terminal at San Jose, Puerto Princesa. It is better to be early at the Terminal. The best time to travel the route to Sabang is with the 7 AM jeepney or the the 9 AM Bus. Until around 3 PM several jeepneys are departing for Sabang.

VAN Hire:

Vans (Air-conditioned) can be hired at the Aiport or at any Travel Agency in Puerto Princesa. The vans can accommodate maximal 8 persons.

Bicol region was my long time wish list in my travelogue. Unfortunately it was not realize until the 3^rd of May. My buddy invited me to explore his hometown in Nabua, Camarines Sur. I never had a second thought. The following day I packed my backpack and leave the hot temperature of metro for a while.

My first stop – Nabua - a 1st class municipality in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. According to the census, it has a population of 75,422 people in 12,724 households.

Nabua is the mother town of Iriga City, Buhi, Bato, Balatan, Bula and Baao in Camarines Sur. Nabua has five districts: Antacudos, Binoyoan, Caobnan, Lupa and Sabang.

The plain hectare of land is covered mostly of “palay” one of the major source of income of the people.

However, the main problem of the farmers is the habitual typhoon leaving the agricultural land nothing but flood of water.

My second stop - City of Iriga - a 4th class city in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. It is located about 400 kilometers south of Manila, 37 kilometers south of Naga, and about 61 kilometers north of Legazpi City. It is bounded by the town of Buhi in the east, by the municipalities of Baao, Nabua and Bato in the west, by the province of Albay in the south, and by the municipalities of Ocampo and Sangay in the north.

One of the tourist attractions here in Iriga is Lourdes Grotto. Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary invoked by Roman Catholics in honor of the Marian apparitions which are said to have taken place before various individuals on separate occasions around Lourdes, France.

My third stop - City of Naga - a highly urbanized city in the Philippines. Naga is 377 kilometres south-east of Manila, the nation's capital. Naga City is the second largest city in the Bicol Region when it comes to population but not in land area.

Naga is the "Heart of Bicol" being the religious, cultural, educational, financial, administrative and commercial center of the Bicol region. Residents of the City are called Nagueños.

Naga City is at the core of Metro Naga, an official designation given the City and 14 municipalities in the area administered by the Metro Naga Development Council. MNDC covers the entire 2nd district of the province of Camarines Sur, and part of its 1st, 3rd and 4th districts.

Camsur Watersports Complex or Camarines Sur Watersports Complex is a water sports park designed for wakeboarding, wake skating and waterskiing. It is located within the Provincial Capitol Complex, Cadlan, Pili, Camarines Sur. The province of Camarines Sur, situated in southeastern part of Luzon is found in the Philippines, Southeast Asia.

The Naga Metropolitan Cathedral is located at Elias Angeles Street, Naga City Camarines Sur.
Constructed in 1816 to 1831, the Cathedral was for many years the seat of the Archdiocese of Caceres which encompassed the six Bicol provinces. It is the biggest church in Bicol.

The old stone church, magnificent in its striking baroque style of architecture, has two large belfries attached to its sides.

The ceilings are said to be painted using the art technique called Trompe-l’œil which makes it look like a three-dimensional piece of art.

The pavilion on the Naga Cathedral grounds, other than being a good place to have a wedding portrait taken, serves as a shelter for the image of the Lady after the major processions – the Traslacion (First Friday of September from Basilica to Naga Cathedral along the streets of Naga City) and the Fluvial procession (8th day of the devotion, from Naga Cathedral to Basilica along the Bicol River).

Home to the miraculous image of the Patroness of Bicolandia, Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia. Thousands of pilgrims flock to this site during the September celebration of the Peñafrancia Fiesta just to visit and venerate the virgin.

The image of Virgin Mary is housed at Basilica Minore, a palatial structure replicating the Gothic architecture.

Nabua Church - the existence of Nabua as a municipality dates back to as early as 1571 when Fray Alonzo Jimenez, an Augustinian missionary, started his first Church mission in the settlement known before as Lupa. The historical marker found in the Church of Nabua indicates, however, that the town was founded seven years later from the date it was founded by Fr. Jimenez, which means that it was founded also in the year 1578.

My fourth stop – Pasacao - is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. Pasacao has beautiful attractive beaches particularly located in Barangay Balogo and Caranan which are frequently visited by tourists and excursionists during summer season.

What to Eat

Bicol fare is characterized by a heavy use of coconut cream and a copious amount of chilies – a culinary tradition that sets the region apart from the rest of the country but has a strangely similar affinity with the Malay culinary traditions. Try Langkang Palusag which is made of langka (breadfruit), bangut, garlic and onions in coconut milk, boiled, and simmered. Or the ever popular, Bicol Express named after the Philippine National Railway that goes through the Bicol heartland. Bicol Express is made of balaw (small shrimps) with a bit of ground pork and the notoriously spicy – siling labuyo- probably the spiciest chillies in the world. Diced lobster meat mixed with young coconut meat, taro leaves, lemongrass, ground garlic and diced onions in coconut milk makes the dish called Pinangat. Ginuygoy, meanwhile, is made of taro leaves, flavored with dinaelan and seasoned with lemon juice. If you are in the area, also try Inon-on – saltwater fish cooked in vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, onions and oil; Ginaring – roast skewered fish called talusog; and of course Gulay na Natong or commonly called Laing- taro leaves with chillies, and sometimes ground pork.

If you are not coming with a tour group, Camarines Sur (through the Naga Airport in Pili) can be accessed via plane (45 minutes ride). Zest Air, Philippine Airlnes and Cebu Pacific from Manila and vice-versa.

Visiting the Mango Capital of the Philippines

Guimaras is situated east of Panay Island and was once part of the province of Iloilo before it became independent. Guimaras, considered one of the exotic islands in the Philippines; believed to have been once part of the Panay group of islands. Original name was Himal-us. Once a sub-province of Iloilo, Guimaras was proclaimed as a regular and full-pledged province on May 22, 1992. It has 5 towns, with Jordan town as the capital. Located southwest of Panay Island and northwest of Negros Island, it has a land area of 604.65 sq. km. It has dry and wet season and population is estimated at 117,990. Hiligaynon is the native dialect but the residents also write and speak English and Pilipino, the national language.

Guimaras is blessed with natural and historical attractions. It has white-sand beaches, falls, springs, off-shore islets, coves and caves. Surrounded with sandy beach and growing corals. Offers island hopping tours, sailing, excursion and snorkelling in neighbouring islands.

It is known much for its sweet mangoes which is one of the main incomes of most families. The island province has more than 50,000 fruit bearing mango trees. Have 3 major plantations: Oro Verde, Buenavista; Southern Orchard, Jordan; Guimaras Tree Farm, Buenavista. Aside from mangoes, kalamansi and cashew nuts are also abundant. Guimaras also produces a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, orchids, and root crops.

Another place to visit in Guimaras is Trappist Monastery, 12 kilometres from Jordan Wharf; founded by group of American monks in 1972; orchard grows assorted tropical fruits; has an interesting souvenir shop and a good place to be with God.

Another historical place in Guimaras is the Guisi Lighthouse. An 18th century Spanish-colonial lighthouse built beside the beach. It was built to guide mariners passing the Iloilo and Guimaras strait. The lighthouse can be reached by following a light trail. The 15-minute uphill trek to the Guisi Lighthouse also provides a great view of the beach. At the top of the hill are the ruins of a Spanish-colonial outpost and the rotting remains of the metal lighthouse structure. Although the condition of the old lighthouse is already in disarray the Guimarasnons take pride in having the second oldest lighthouse, next to the old lighthouse in Aparri, Cagayan. Today, a new lighthouse was built to replace the old one.

By plane, a daily flight that takes 55 minutes from Manila to Iloilo. From Iloilo airport, take a cab going to the port. Take a 15-minute boat ride from Iloilo City to Jordan. Take note that there are two ports in Iloilo that have boats going to Guimaras. One goes to Buenavista and the other one is in Jordan. The port going to Jordan is located in Ortiz (near SM Delgado and Robinson's Place) and can be reached by cab. As of January 2011, pump boat fares going to Jordan cost 13 pesos.

By Sea

By boat, it takes 20 hours at most from Manila to Iloilo. Negros navigation and WG & A Super Ferry have scheduled trip.

By Air:

The fastest and best way to go to El Nido is from Manila. Try catching a plane flight from the Island Transvoyager Inc. They have daily flights using a Dornier 228 aircraft that is capable to seat 19 people. The travel time from pale is only an hour and thirty minutes. You will land directly at El Nido’s airport. From Manila, Puerto Princesa destination is another option.

From Puerto Princesa by Bus or Van - By bus costs P350 and by van is P500. The bus will take about 8 hours while a van will take about seven hours. The van is air-conditioned and the bus is not. All vehicles traveling to El Nido from Puerto Princesa will leave from the San Jose bus terminal, about 7km from the airport. Vans and buses leave about the same time. The Eulen Joy Liner bus leaves both Puerto and El Nido at 5am, 7am and 8:54am daily.

The road journey will take you through two major towns, Roxas and Taytay. The road from Puerto Princesa to Roxas is very good by Philippine standards, and the first leg of the journey, which is about 145km, will take about 2hours. Roxas is a town of no consequence.

The road between Roxas and Taytay is about 80km long and there is a lot of road construction at the moment. Much of this road is in very bad condition and during the wet season, vans and buses regularly get stuck. The approach to Taytay is very picturesque.

The road from Taytay to El Nido is mostly gravel but it is in fair condition. The distance is about 70km and should take one and a half to two hours. When the road is dry the dust is truly horrid. There are some beautiful views over the ocean as you get closer to El Nido but they will be difficult to appreciate when you are in a vehicle that is not going to stop. About 2km before El Nido you will pass through Corong Corong where the views fantastic. The final decent into El Nido is a treat.

Bacolod - the capital of the Province of Negros Occidental, which is the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines. Bacolod City serves as the entrance of the sugar-rich cities and towns of the province.

Bacolod called "The City of Smiles" is the capital and the largest city of Negros Occidental. Bacolod is the only city that wins a grand slam being the cleanest and greenest city in the Philippines. Home of the world-renowned "MassKara Festival" and "Pana-ad Sa Negros Festival". Bacolod is rich in cultural and architectural heritage. It has many marvellous landmarks that were constructed in the time of Spanish regime but until now it is still standing.

My main purpose of exploring Bacolod is to visit Mambukal Resort at Barangay Murcia.

Its land area is over 23.6 hectares; Mambukal is blessed with numerous beautiful natural resources. A huge mountain stream, fed by several water channels, flows down in a series of seven falls and flows through the center of the resort, feeding the swimming pools and boating lagoon.

The Mambukal Mountain Resort has many beautiful sites, both made by man and by Mother Nature. The Hot Springs with sulphuric soda water is one of them.

A bath house with spa, famous to the Asian people, particularly the Japanese tourists, is supplied with hot and cold water from the springs coming from the mountain.

Known for its therapeutic treatment, people with body fatigue dip into it to relieved their stress and have relaxed.

To commune with nature, you can camp out at the camping grounds or enjoy a Canopy Walk on the hanging bridges under the lush green forest.

Mambukal is also home to 4,000 fruit bats which live freely inside the resort. They say that at Mambukal Resort, there are 3 already endangered species of bats – the Philippine Flying Fox (Philippine Giant Fruit Bat), the Philippine bare-backed fruit bat, and the Little Golden-mantled Flying Fox. These bats produce guano, a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer.

Way Points:

Bacolod is 55 minutes by air from Manila, the country’s major port of entry. Philippine Airlines (PAL) fly to and from Bacolod six times daily. Other airlines like Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines also fly daily to and from Bacolod.

Bacolod is 30 minutes by air from Cebu, an alternative entry point. PAL, Cebu Pacific, and Air Philippines have daily flights to and from Cebu City.

By sea it is an 18-hour cruise from Manila and one hour from Iloilo. By land and sea travel, it is 7 hours from Cebu. From Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, Bacolod is 5 hours away via Mabinay in the south.

The resort is around 30 minutes by private vehicle and 45 minutes by public utility vehicle. From downtown Bacolod, take the “double tire” mini-buses going to Murcia from the Libertad terminal. Fare is less than P50. Double Tires are almost always available from Mambukal going to Bacolod City.

Day Trek at Mount Pinatubo

I've always wanted to see Mt. Pinatubo. After all those planned trips that never pushed through, I was getting eager and impatient to see its famed crater lake. Finally my friends decided to push through with the plan.

Mount Pinatubo is an active staratovolcano located on the island of Luzon, near the tri - point of the Philippines province of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga. It is located in the Cabusilan Mountains separating the west coast of Luzon from the central plains.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in July 1990 which struck 100 kilometers northeast of Pinatubo is said to be the catalyst of the volcano's awakening. Tremors shook the surrounding area in mid-March 1991.

The volcano's eruption in June 1991 caused the destruction of billions of pesos' worth in economic and property damage and the loss of 847 lives. Aside from the massive damage to the Philippine economy, the eruption also had world-spanning ramifications.

The Capas trail is the easiest route to Pinatubo from the base, and it takes around three hours to reach the summit.

It was a one-hour 4x4 ride to the jump-off point and that alone was an experience. The scenery was unlike anything I've seen before and the panoramic views of the lahar river beds, grasslands, streams, canyons and mountains made a surreal combination.

This route continues directly to the Crater Lake with the highest elevation of around 1400 meters above sea level. The safest and best time to scale the mountain is during the summer months of December to April. The trip is exhilarating-crossing rivers, jumping from small cliffs and over creeks, truly a different kind of experience!

For your safety and convenience, we include a local guide service, they know the current safest route to take while trekking. It is hot during the summer months since the ashes are reflecting the rays of the sun so bring sun block lotions and proper climbing gear. Make the trek early morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the noon heat.

Reaching the peak invigorates my mind and body. The emerald water is freezing yet irresistibly tempting to tired trekkers.

The best route to take to go Mt. Pinatubo trekking is the Capas trail in Tarlac province. So first you have to go to Tarlac. If you are coming from Manila, take a bus to Lingayen or Dagupan (places in Pangasinan province) and get off at Capas, Tarlac Then take a jeepney to Patlin, and from there take a tricycle to Barangay Sta. Juliana. At Sta. Juliana, you can hire guides.

Iloilo: Home of Spanish Era Churches

This is my second trip (after our retreat) in Iloilo as a birthday treat to my mother and sister. I will never have a second thought of visiting the Spanish era churches built during the colonization period in honor of spreading Christianity.

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines, located at the center of the Philippine archipelago. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island with island-province of Guimaras just across its coast. Iloilo’s rich heritage is showcased in multifarious festivals.

Situated in the southern part of the Philippines, Iloilo serves as the gateway to the South for both local and foreign tourists of paradise Philippines.

Iloilo is the cradle of early bliss Philippines civilization. The Spanish influence is very evident in the old houses and churches reminiscent of older Spanish architecture influences.

Miag-ao Church

Miag-ao Church is located in the municipality of Jaro, this century-old church epitomize the Spanish influence in Iloilo’s history.

Constructed more than two hundred years ago in the year 1797, the Miag-ao Church stands as a living legacy of the culture and way of life of the people of Miagao centuries ago, anchored in a strong foundation of Christian faith. The creative and aesthetic abilities of Spanish colonizers are reflected in many colonial churches in the Philippines. This is especially true in Miag-ao Church – a world-renowned religious structure now included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Molo Church

Molo Church is known to be a feminist church because sixteen female saints on the altar. Women wanting to be empowered by the graces of women saints have a place in Molo Church.

The Molo exudes a blatant expression of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, the one of its kind outside Manila. The interior is a fusion of Gothic and Romanesque architectures, there is a constant alternation between the overpowering features of Gothic and the recessive characteristics of Romanesque.

Molo church is very sturdy and has survived fires, earthquakes, and artillery barrages in 1945 and was made as an evacuation center for the civilians during WWII.

It is said that in August 4, 1886, Dr. Jose Rizal on his way back to Manila from his exile in Dapitan, passed by the church to pray and view its collection of biblical paintings.

Jaro Cathedral

The shrine is constructed of Romanesque revival architecture. The bell tower unusually is located across a busy street on the Jaro Plaza. Such construction arrangement is rare in the Philippines.

The original cathedral was built in 1874 by the first bishop of Jaro, Mariano Cuartero. It was destroyed by an earthquake in January 1948 and later repaired in 1956 by the first Archbishop of Jaro, Jose Maria Cuenco.

Surrounding the cathedral and sharing the same general location are a variety of archdiocesan and parish offices.

Guimbal Church

The full name of the Guimbal Church is the Church of San Nicolas of Tolentino. The edifice was built in 1774, upon the order of Fr. Campos, the Spanish priest who presided over the town. From that time on to the present, the unique characteristics of the structure has made it very popular.

The Guimbal Church is one of the oldest churches in the country. This yellow sandstone church is made from adobe stones called igang and coral stones quarried from Guimaras. It was built in 1774 by Father Campos. The facade is a two-story affair flanked by twinned round pilasters decorated with floral carvings. Its vintage belfry is 4 stories high and doubles as a watchtower during the Spanish occupation against pillaging Moro pirates. It has undergone some reconstruction after it was destroyed twice, during the Second World War and during the 1948 earthquake. Recently, it was rehabilitated to its original structure.

Tigbauan Church

The Tigbauan Church is unique in the country because of its Latin American churriquesque architecture. The church was constructed in 1575 and destroyed during an earthquake in 1948.

Tigbauan’s facade is style in the Mexican architecture. At the center is a seal of the Augustinian order surrounded by a retablo-like floral frieze, which fills the central section. Above the seal is a niche flanked by pilasters embellished with flowers and upon it is a depiction of San Juan.

San Joaquin Church

The militaristic motif of the San Joaquin Church distinguishes itself from other churches in the country. Carved on a disproportionately large pediment on the church’s facade is an intricate sculptural relief depicting the Spanish victory over Moroccan forces in the Battle of Tetuan.

It was Saturday afternoon when I was surfing the net. A stunning wedding video caught my attention. The venue of the intimate ceremony is Transfiguration Chapel of Caleruega. All of the sudden, I was eager to visit the place. The following day, early morning of Sunday I leave Manila and the mass is on-going when I get there – luckily. The travel time usually 1.5-2 hours from Manila and is worth it because the Chapel has many things to offer.
With its majestic structure on a hilltop, combined with a beautiful architecture Caleruega is one of the most visited places in Nasugbu, Batangas. Caleruega is a great place for spiritual holiday to loosen up and enjoy the day.

The great landscape is a given along with fantastic views, and cool breeze due to the environment and elevated location. So go on and contemplate. You can check it out first because it’s also a very popular tourist destination. You only have to pay a very minimal fee to enter.

Aside from recreation and bonding, it is also a place for activities such as retreats, recollections, prayers and renewal workshop, wedding, and youth camps and nature exploration.

But couples are also allowed to invite a priest of their choice. They also have reception areas such as the Plaza de Aza & Tuktok for PhP 40,000 and the Veritas Hall for PhP 30,000. The cost is for the venue only. The seating capacity is up to 200 people. For more intimate weddings, the Gazekubo costs PhP 25,000 for a seating capacity of 60 persons.

Side Trip at Bangui and Burgos Ilocos

Before leaving Ilocos Region, I must not forget to explore Bangui Windmill, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation and Cape Bojeador Lighthouse. This will be my half day tour.

The Bangui Wind Mills

The Bangui Wind Mills were built by the North Wind Power Development Corporation to take its share in reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs) causing global warming and to accelerate the rural electrification of the government.

In this area, wind mostly comes from the north-east, from the sea towards the land. To optimize the full benefit of the winds, turbines are installed along the shore facing the sea effectively removing wind breaks and achieving a terrain roughness of class 0.

The 'Wind Farm" as it is aptly called consist of 15 wind turbines. The turbines are on-shore and arranged in a single row spaced 326 meters apart. The turbines hub height ground level to centre of nacelle – that part holding the blades is 70 meters high roughly equivalent to a 23 storey building, each blade is 41 meters long (just 9 meters shy of a Olympic sized pool) giving a rotor diameter of 82 meters and a windswept area of 5,281 square meters.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

According to Manong driver, we need to pass 3.1 km rough road heading to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. I decided to have our lunch first. While inside the tricycle it seems that my internal organs are “misplaced.”After 30 minutes of treacherous drive we arrived and take a rest at nipa hut. My body is bit aching.

After having five minutes rest and water break, time to trek at skimpy corals going to the formation. Take an extra effort one might get abrasion into the slippery corals.

The formation was naturally beautiful, however I noticed the vandals on the white wall of the rock. I’m a little bit sad that tourist don’t know how to be appreciative in taking care of the place.

Like the rocks in Palaui Island, Kapurpurawan was naturally shaped by strong waves and winds from South China Sea.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, also known as Burgos Lighthouse, is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, that was established during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. It was first lit on March 30, 1892 and is set high on Vigia de Nagparitan Hill overlooking the scenic Cape Bojeador.

The 65-foot-tall (20 m) octagonal stone tower, the most prominent structure in the vicinity and the tallest among the lighthouse that the Spanish constructed.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse was declared a National Historical Landmark on August 13, 2004 and a National Cultural Treasure on June 20, 2005 by the Philippine Government.

The elegant T-shaped stairway leads you up to the verandah of the main pavilion. The hallway of the main pavilion takes you to the foot of the covered stairs that lead to the entrance of the tower. A spiral staircase leads the visitor to the lantern room on top. Only a certain number of people are allowed in the tower at a time. Access to the gallery depends on the outside wind condition.

The pavilion has now been transformed into a small museum as well as lodging for people seeking basic accommodation, though except from shared cooking facilities and water from the cistern, no other amenities are provided

There are several bus lines that ply the Manila-Vigan route. Among these are: The Philippine Rabbit us Line, Partas Co., and Dominion. The 405 km distance from Manila to Ilocos Sur is a comfortable and scenic seven hour ride.

When you’re already here, one can take chose jeepney, mini-bus, caleza and tricycle to go to nearby areas.

By Air:

From Manila (via Manila International Airport), you can take Philippine Airlines which flies to Laoag City four times a week (except Wednesdays). Make sure you check with the airlines as schedules do vary. To get to Ilocos Sur (Vigan) from Laoag City, you can easily take public transportation. Travel time usually takes 1 hour and 30 minutes (80 kilometers).

The Secrets of Bantayan Island

Bantayan Island is in the Visayan Sea, Philippines, located just west of the northern tip of Cebu Island. The island, politically a part of the Province of Cebu, is about 7 miles (11 km) wide by 10 miles (16 km) long. It is also the main and largest island of the Bantayan Island Group that is roughly the geographical center of the Philippines. The island group includes numerous smaller islands like the Virgin Island which is my side trip.

Bantayan Island is a beautiful Island, and currently Cebu's semi-secret little Island Paradise; small numbers of travelers over the years have slowly been putting the word out located just off the northwest tip of Cebu's mainland.

Beachfront

Largely undeveloped and definitely not overcrowded and over priced with the commercialization of some other Islands; it’s a perfect place for those seeking peace & quiet, blue skies & clean air, with spectacular turquoise water & great white sand beaches, along with some of the most beautiful sunrise & sunsets in the world!

There aren't any huge corporate hotel chains here; there are smaller hotels/resorts with cottages & rooms in just about every price range from less than P 250 – P 2,000 per night.

It’s also very old fashioned and peaceful on Bantayan Island, and life is much slower here as there are no big city shopping malls, hotel chains, mega movie theaters or metro discos.

Island Life here is slower and more relaxing, but that’s really the beauty of it all, as some roads are still yet to be paved, and locals who farm & raise livestock live very simply in bamboo & coco wood houses; the warmth and friendliness of the local people here only serves to make Bantayan a more unique & very special place for all who visit.

With regards to food, small street side eateries featuring basic local food (fish & pork soups, ground pork dishes, afritada, noodles, all with rice) at cheap prices for those on a tight budget or just to taste something different and local. These meals are usually around P20+ and the cheapest dishes I’ve had there is the ‘egg omelet’ at P10, and a delicious bowl of spicy noodle soup at P5. I want to live here if you really want simple and healthy life.

During dinner, I’m looking for fresh seafood to fill my empty stomach. I tried “eat-all-you-can” at the Jungle for P300. Wow, food was great as well as the drinks. After my dinner, a bottle of beer made my Bantayan trip memorable.

Early in the morning, my next on list – island hopping – Virgin Island. Virgin Island is accessable via a short boat ride from Bantayan Island .Travel time usually 25-40 minutes (for P 600 ) depending on the boat and it’s a favorite Island Hopping spot for travelers who want to get away to nice secluded beach and have lunch or brunch cooked up by the caretakers on Virgin Island. Entrance fee is P 50.

I had been too many beaches in northern part of the Philippines but this totally different. Pristine clear water, few tourist and white sand at your feet is quite remembering. Love..love…love beach bumming!

Before I leave Bantayan, I take one more shot at Ogtong Cave, located at Sta. Fe. My purpose is not to visit the resort but the cave itself.

Ogtong Cave is quite popular among the must see sights in Bantayan Island. It’s located within the Ogtong Cave resort grounds. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to swim inside the cave during my visit- it was disappointing, however since I love nature; I just take some pictures and let my feet half submerge.

Most people get there by bus and then a ferry. If you leave from Cebu City, you’ll want to head to the North Bus Terminal, asks your cab driver to take you there. Once there, you’ll find assistants often called dispatchers that will guide you to the bus you want to take. You might have to wait for a bus to come in. Bus will cost you around P100 for two – three hours to Hagnaya.

From Hagnaya take a ferry to Bantayan. Island Shipping provides air con in first class. There will also be a TV during most trip. The cost at the time of this article is P165 for first class. Super Ferry also provides a ferry to Bantayan. Super Ferry does not have air con nor first class. The Super Ferry is about P150 as is second class using Island Shipping. The trip across takes about an hour to an hour and a half.

Every day schedule to Cebu via PAL, Cebu pacific offers you lower prices. From Cebu,since there is a small private airport on Bantayan Island and there is also a service that runs from Cebu City to Bantayan Island you can go directly to Bantayan. If not, your option is to take land.

Visiting the Spanish District of the North

Since a month long vacation is coming, I’m planning to have week-long vacation at Vigan to explore its Spanish era building and delicious Ilocano cuisine.

Busy Calle Crisologo

Vigan is one of Philippines' most beautiful cities, as it showcases the Spanish heritage of the country. Vigan city is located in the northern part of the Philippines and its historical centre, which is called the heritage village, is listed on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2 December 1999 for its unique Spanish colonial history in Asia and the very well preserved Spanish monumental buildings which where build in the 18th century.

The major attraction of Vigan is its mestizo district which is filled with Spanish-style houses that stir up a bygone era when its people lived comfortably because of the Manila-Acapulco maritime trade.

I experience being transported back to this period in Philippine-Spanish colonial time, a walk or a calesa ride through Vigan’s Calle Crisologo or Mena Crisologo Street is a must.

The tour will take more than a couple of hours and will cost around half a thousand pesos if you like the native products for “pasalubong”. You will be guided through four blocks of cobblestone streets lined with heritage houses of the families of the Filipino-Chinese traders who rose to prominence during that time of vigorous trading in abel cloth, indigo, gold, tobacco and other goods that were transported to Vigan from all over the North.

The houses are simple but lovely subjects ready for picture-perfect shots with their roofs of red tiles, thick walls, huge doors and stair cases leading to rooms of high ceilings and sliding capiz shell windows. Having survived the many natural and man-made calamities throughout the centuries, the families who own these treasures have endeavored to maintain them.

I admire more closely the architecture and intricate craftsmanship employed in the grill and wood works when they step inside some of the houses that have been turned into stores and museums.

Classic Calle

Though a trip to Calle Crisologo is enjoyable during the day especially because of the opportunity to shop for Vigan’s best products (antiques, abel woven products, bags, basi wine, burnay and dimili products, chicharon, jewellery, sweets, Vigan vinegar and woodcrafts) in the unobtrusive shops located in the ground floor of some of the grand houses, a walk through it is magical at night. However, when I was browsing the net, I noticed picture perfect scene during night because of the light. I decided to go back that night to capture the scenic Calle Crisologo.

Since it is closed to vehicular traffic at any time of the day, the stillness and shadows that come with the night adds more to the 18th century ambience of the lamp-lit street that local and foreign visitors love. Couples can take advantage of this romantic atmosphere by having dinner in one of the old houses that has been converted to a restaurant.

Plaza Burgos

Plaza Burgos is the smaller of the two major plazas in the city of Vigan. It can be found just right beside Saint Paul Cathedral’s Bell Tower. Plaza Burgos was named after Father Burgos of the historic GOMBURZA.

Father Burgos is the only one from the clergy. He fought for ecclesiastical reforms to ease the inequality suffered by Filipino priests during his time. He was executed in Manila’s Bagumbayan together with two other clergy reformists. They are collectively known in Philippine history as the Gomburza, which stands for their surnames Gomez, Burgos and Zamora.

Plaza Burgos is best-known for its empanadahan (place for eating a local meat and vegetable-filled pastry) and other street food. It is true that where local people converge the best of local food can be found. Food kiosks increase in number in the Plaza later in the day. The Vigan experience is not complete without trying the local ice-cream peddled in the plaza which is served in a cone or in the popular Filipino bread called pan de sal.

St. Paul Cathedral

The St. Paul’s Cathedral is also known as the metropolitan Cathedral. It is considered a major religious landmark not only of northern Luzon but the country as well.

The church as it stands now was completed in 1800. The original structure was built in 1574 upon the command of the Spanish founder of Vigan, Juan de Salcedo. It was a mere chapel then, made of wood and thatch. In 1641, the chapel was replaced by a church.

The cathedral follows a Baroque architectural design that has been modified by Ilocano’s to strengthen the structure against earthquakes. This is now known as earthquake Baroque.

The façade is not as impressive as other churches; the cathedral’s interior is something to be admired. The presence of a silver-panelled main altar, three naves, 12 minor altars and brass communion handrails forged in China gives the inside of the church a feeling of grandeur. The area for the choir is located at the loft, making use of the big church’s acoustics.

I decided to take a rest in the plaza after exploring the historical places. I thought I was in Spain for three hours unknowingly that I am just here in Vigan.

Northern Adventure: Laoag, Ilocos Norte

A fourth class municipality and a coastal resort town on the northernmost tip of Luzon Island in the Philippines, Pagudpud has a population of 20,385 people in 3,804 households.

The town is bounded to the south by the town of Bangui and to the east by the Cordillera Mountain Range, the town of Adams and the province of Cagayan. The South China Sea lies to the west and north. The town rolls over mountains, hills, valleys and flat coastal land. It lies 45 miles (72 km) north of Laoag City, the provincial capital, and about 350 miles (560 km) north of Manila. They reside in 3,804 homes that are spread across 83 square miles (210 km²). Most make their living through farming, fishing and subsistence retailing. Tourism is a growing part of the economy.

I explore Laoag City through tricycle to reach different attractions including Patapat Viaduct, Sand Dunes, Saud Beach, Kabigan Falls for P 500.00-half day tour around the city.

Patapat Viaduct

The Patapat Viaduct, elevated 31 meters over sea level, is 1.3 km concrete coastal bridge that connects the Maharlika Highway from Laoag, Ilocos Norte to the Cagayan Valley Region. It rises along the town's coastal mountains, which is the starting point of the Cordillera Mountain Range that snakes through Northern Luzon. It is the 4th longest bridge in the Philippines. Located more than 16 kilometers from the town proper, it offers a scenic view of Pasaleng Bay- a view that leads towards wide and pristine beaches backed by mountains with breathtaking waterfalls Kabigan and Mabaga, along with the many cool, refreshing springs waiting to be discovered within.

During my passage here, a sunken boat lays the seaside. According to locals, it was loaded with sand going to Taiwan when typhoon hits Ilocos.

The bridge is one of the best structures along seaside. Many tourists would often take a quick stop on the bridge for photo op.

The view of the South China Sea from the Patapat viaduct is really breathtaking. The large waves’ pounding on the rocks reminds me of my own province – Banton, Romblon.

Sand Dunes

Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes is unique in the country and stretches from the municipality of Currimao in the north and winds its way to La Paz, Laoag City, then to Suba, Paoay and finally in Pasuquin in the south with a total of 52 square miles.

La Paz, or the Desert of the North, as it is called. After a long trek on dusty roads along Ilocos Norte, two sceneries will surprise the weary traveller at the end of his journey – that there is a desert. And there is a beach.

Sand Dunes are protected national part covering 52 square miles of sand and beach. At one end is the cool water of the China Sea and the other stretches to inland Ilocos Norte. It’s located just outside the city of Laoag, so it is easily accessible, although walking the length of the beach can take more than one hour.

The sand dunes are favourite movie settings, from classic local films such as Nora Aunor’s Himala and Fernando Poe, Jr.’s Panday, to Hollywood greats like Tom Cruise’s Born on the Fourth of July.

You can clearly see desert formations. And apparently people live there, as evidenced from the scattered small nipa huts hiding among the rolling hills. Around their nipa hut are dragon fruits that serve as their source of living.

Saud Beach

The jewel in the crown of Pagudpud is Saud Beach, with its renowned wonderful fine white cream sand.

The waters of the South China Sea are a magnificent blue and crystal clear all the time.

This is bordered by spectacular multi-coloured corals and iridescent fish.

The beach is lined with over hanging coconut palms, creating a scene from a dream.

The best thing is that there are not too many people on the beach.

Kabigan Falls

Kabigan Falls is surrounded by thick forest and well-known for its concaved basin, located at the eastern part of Barangay Balaoi.

Kabigan falls is also part of the town of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte and a trek going to this falls is usually included in the tricycle tour offered in the area.

There is a 20 Pesos/pax entrance fee at the jump-off point where you will be assigned your official trek guide going to the falls. You don't have to worry about being lost or being conned in the area because the locals organized their official group to guide tourist and receive payment.

Before the trek, try to have a snack of their fresh buko juice and bananaque.

What is exciting in the trek is that you have to pass to the narrow bridge made of wood. Extra careful should make sense if it is your first time to trek and cross the strong current of water.

The current is quite strong when I visited this place because it rain during the previous days. I want to swim in the fresh water of the basin but there are many tourist swimming that time. I just decided to take some pictures and sink my feet at the cold water.

Travelling by land is also the most viable option for those that are from Angeles City in Pampanga and Manila. Being a major city in the northern part of the Philippines’ largest island, there are several bus companies that ply routes that can get one to Laoag. One of such bus companies that can ferry one from Manila to Laoag is Farinas Transit Company which has a main terminal within the Philippine capital. Another major bus line the ply from the said route and vice-versa is the Partas bus line. There are many other bus lines that also have ply major and minor destinations in Luzon, including cities such as Angeles City and Baguio. Examples of such bus lines that can get on to get to the capital of Ilocos Norte are as follows: the Philippine Rabbit Bus Company, RCJ Trans, Maria de Leon Bus lines, F Franco and GV Florida Bus lines.

By Air:

If travelling 10-14 hours by land is not your cup of tea, then you could consider travelling by air, which is by far the most convenient way of getting to Laoag. Philippine Airlines, flies to the city every day. Apart from its daily flights to the city, Philippine Airlines also offer local and foreign tourists packages that will cheapen the fare for those who are planning to experience the sights and sounds that can be had in Laoag. Another major airline that one can get into when travelling to the Ilocos Norte capital is Cebu Pacific. Cebu Pacific has regular flights to the city and it offers one of the best bang for the buck as far as air fare is concerned.

Aetas are the most common locals of the place and they are very friendly and accommodating especially if you need a guide in getting around the corners of Nagsasa Cove (trekking and hiking) and other nearby islands.

The Nagsasa Cove is twice a distance of Anawangin Cove from the shores of Pundaquit. There are Aeta’s occasionally travel around and willing to accompany tourist if ever they want to trek the hills and forest behind the coves and nearby mountains.

Nagsasa Cove has its own beauty and pristine silence of nature away from town. There are only few people seen this place so it’s still a virgin destination. But those people have seen already the place will tell you how worth it to visit this place of paradise. Stream and waterfalls run water down from the mountains but they dry out during the hot summer and dry season. There are no facilities here and no mobile signals.

Lagoon During High Tide

The beach and the river were breathtaking. It has soft white-grayish sand (ash-colored) with Agoho trees (resembling to Pine trees) around the place.

I stayed here overnight and paid Php 100 for the entrance, camping, and environmental fee. While we wait for the sunset, we seized the day by taking photos, walking by the beach, wandering at the lagoon, and climbing the mountain.

Climbing on top is the most exhilarating experience here in Nagsasa. The spectacular view from the top is amazing. Nagsasa Cove is truly one of the hidden paradises of the Philippines. At the peak of the rough mountainous climb is a small falls where water came from going to the beach for cooking purposes of visitors.

Check your rain coat and include Nagsasa to your list — best for small group and budget travelers.

Ride a bus bound to Iba or Sta. Cruz, Zambales. Victory Lines has scheduled trips to those destinations. From their terminal in Sampaloc, it will cost you around P270.00, don’t forget to tell the cashier that you are up to San Antonio only. Travel time is around 3 to 4 hours.

From San Antonio, ride a tricycle to Barangay San Miguel or Pundaquit, standard rate is P30.00 per passenger.

From Barangay San Miguel or Pundaquit, in San Antionio, Zambales where a banca to Anawangin can be rented for P1500.00, round trip. It is an hour and a half boat ride.

Potipot: Five Minutes Boat Ride From Highway

Potipot Island is a white sand beach island 5 minutes away from Candelaria, Zambales through a boat ride. I've been eyeing this place for quite some time and while searching for resorts that are available for stay near the island.
Some of the attractions of Potipot Island are: its white sands that completely surround the whole island, the calm clear waters, its proximity to the mainland that allows visitors to reach the island in only 5 minutes by banca, the lush vegetation and trees that provide shade along the beach (and even on the water).

If you really want to have a serine weekend, include Potipot in your list.

You can ride a 7-8 hour bus trip at Victory Liner at Caloocan City. Fare is around P432. It will be best if you'll get a bus bound to Sta. Cruz, Zambales. You need to get off Candelaria, Zambales where the Island is located. Alternate Route: You can take a bus bound to Olongapo City and there'd be a bus bound to Iba, Zambales or a straight Sta. Cruz trip.

From Candelaria, Zambales you can rent a boat. Fare is around P800 (good for 5pax). It will only take around 5 minutes to reach the Island. There'd be an entrance fee of either P100 or P300. Latter rate applies for overnight stay. You can set up your own tent. But if you don't have one, worry nothing as there are lots of available cottages that range from P500-P2000 depending on the cottage size. If you want cheaper weekend getaway, just set up tent.

I was browsing my facebook to look for my next adventure when my friend messaged me about beach bumming. He instructed me to look for Magalawa Island which I did.

Magalawa is a perfect place for fun. Beachfront is the most suitable area for swimming; other side of the island breeds abundant sea grasses and mangroves. I walked on this part of the island after spending some time with the water. That gave me a feeling of possession of the place.

Magalawa Island is embedded by trees of various kinds that serve as shades for campers. With a very wide coastal under, trees for tents and hammocks. Here, you can easily find a place to stay. Benches and wooden tables are everywhere.

Up North : Palaui, Cagayan

Palaui is located in the Northern Province of Cagayan in the Philippines. It is accessible by a 30-minute boat ride from the Cagayan mainland. From Manila, one can go to Palaui Island by air and by bus. Ride a plane from Manila Airport to Tuguegarao City, and from Tuguegarao ride a bus to Santa Ana. From the San Vicente port in Santa Ana, one can charter a boat to the island. Total travel time (air, bus and boat) from Manila to Palaui Island is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Since I visited first Calliao Cave before heading to Palaui, it’s almost 12 hours travel from Manila by bus to Sta. Ana Cagayan.

I stayed at a transient house in Sta. Ana Cagayan owned by coast guard. At the early morning I take a boat from Sta. Ana to Palaui Island. Thanks God, the sea is calm to travel.

Commercial accommodations in Palaui Island are nonexistent; one can either bring a tent or stay in the Barangay Hall. An alternative would be staying in one of the hotels in the town of Santa Ana.

This Trail is in Honor to Late Leonardo

After arriving at Palaui Island I just fixed my tent and have breakfast and started to trail Cape Engano Lighthouse through Leonardo's trail. The trail is almost one and a half hour since it was raining and the trail is muddy.

Faro de Cabo Engano or now popularly known as Cape Engano is one of the 27 major lighthouses in the country, which until now, continues to play a major role in navigation, especially for ships traversing the Babuyan Channel in Northern Luzon and the Pacific Ocean. It is currently under the supervision of the Department of Transportation and Communications, through the Philippine Coast Guard’s lighthouse division. It is the first light station upon entering or the last when leaving Philippine waters heading for the Pacific Ocean. It played a crucial part in assisting trade and navigation between Spain and the Philippines. Later on the Spaniards realized its importance when trade grew between neighboring Formosa (Taiwan), Japan, as well as the Islands of Guam and further to the west coast of the United States and Australia. It continues to guide vessels heading toward northern Luzon’s most important port, Aparri.

From a distance, we caught a glimpse of the lighthouse perched on top of a hill with wild blue grass cascading all over its surroundings below. To our left were the Dos Hermanas islands, a rock formation and the last land mass on the Pacific side. Legend has it that the island had two sisters who, centuries ago bade goodbye to their husbands on a fishing expedition, only to be left waiting since then for their return.

After straggling 229 concrete stairway zigzagging the to the top, I finally arrived. So, this is the famed Cape Engano lighthouse overlooking the Ziwangag Cove to the north.

The U-shaped building formerly housed employees of the Philippine Navy and other officials in charge of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed on the 31st of December 1892.

It was likewise rehabilitated by the American forces, as it is the only visible house in Northeastern Luzon seen from an 8 nautical miles distance. The roof was gone on both sides of the building and the lighthouse was constructed at the center. Sadly, the lighthouse ceased to provide the necessary service to guide navigators in this part of the world.

During the Japanese occupation, the underground area at the foot of the lighthouse was used by the Japanese for water torture treatment as a form of punishment to Filipinos. During the American occupation and subsequent administration by the Philippine government, some of the rooms near the kitchen area eventually became the generator room and fuel bunker. Water was provided by collecting rainwater diverted and stored in a cistern located below the courtyard.

Little Valley for Animal Farming

Living there was the object of envy for many people of Santa Ana, simply because it was the only place in the area where residents had electricity. “Santa Ana was still then a dense jungle, so that when people came here, it was like they felt like they were just in the city, she said. Their rations of rice, beans, noodles, cooking oil and kerosene –arrived every month and was shared equally among the workers, regardless of rank. The workers also raised goats to augment their food needs. The forest and the sea were also abundant sources of food.

Old lighthouses when seen, gives the impression that it is like a woman who has lived her time. If only the walls could talk-there would be endless stories to tell.

Sad to say, the light station sits forlorn on the isolated island – like a woman abandoned by her lover. Vandals have taken this marker without any remorse to the history attached to it. At the time of my visit, the original lantern (and bronze cupola which houses it) was missing. A temporary solar-based tertiary lighting mechanism was installed in its place. The lighthouse continues to be destroyed by natural as well as by manmade elements. Old wooden beams that have remained are just memories of the structure that was built to withstand the test of time. The windows, doors and roof of the main pavilion, as well as the kitchens and storage rooms reminds me of how it would have been like with robbers forced entry into the underground way to pawnshop to cart necessary things.

However, there’s a lot to be done here. The building needs total rehabilitation or restoration to make the trip worthwhile. It is a historical landmark in the Northern Philippines and travel writers and local guides’ advice that the national and provincial government should move fast if only to lure tourists over the place.

The support structure, which undoubtedly has seen better times, is in need of a complete restoration. One wonders though, considering that the history of this light station was marred with numerous tragedies, if it is fitting that we restore it to its original state. It could be kept in its present state as a memorial for those who perished in constructing this structure.

The trek itself amidst a panoramic land and seascapes were already a big gain. As I bid the lighthouse goodbye, I promised to be back soon for another exhilarating experience to Palaui island. It is really a gateway to the Pacific and it shows!

Visiting the Grandeur of Paoay Church

From Malacanan Palace of the North, we hired tricycle going to the heart of Paoay where the church is located. It was already lunch time when we arrived so decided to have our lunch first before exploring the grandeur of one of the oldest church in the Philippines.

Completed in 1710, the church is famous for its distinct architecture highlighted by the enormous buttresses on the sides and back of the building. In 1993, the church was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one best examples of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

Paoay church is prime example of Earthquake Baroque architecture, which is the Philippine interpretation of the European Baroque adapted to the seismic condition of the country. Aside from Baroque, the church facade also exudes Javanese architecture reminiscent of Borobudur of Java.

During the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the bell tower made of coral stone serves as observation point of the “Katipunero’s” and by Guerillera’s during the Japanese occupation in World War II.

The bell tower also served as a status symbol for the locals. The bell would ring more loudly and more times during the wedding of a prominent clan than it would during the wedding of the poor.

The buttresses are arranged by line with designs including the emblem of Spain, pope, son of god and Chinese clouds.

Before the Augustinian’s arrival, Ilocano’s are naturally born-pagan. They forced them to build the church to conform God’s act.

Until now, Paoays’ populace observes different festivals in front of the church such as Guling-guling in observance of Lenten Season.

By Air

Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific fly to Laoag daily from Manila, travel time is an hour. Meanwhile Sea Air flies Manila to Vigan, Ilocos Sur, only two hours away from Laoag. From Laoag International Airport, there are tricycles and public jeepneys that can take you to the city proper.

Camiguin is one of my target places of exploration because of its scenic places and rich cultural heritage.

Gui-ob Church Ruin

The devastating volcanic eruption in 1871 wiped out the Spanish settlement of Catarman that was establishes in 1697. The remains of an Old Spanish, ruins of adobe walls, belfry and convent are mute witness to the wrath of nature. It also allow us glimpse into the culture of Spanish-era Camiguin.

Even the church was half covered by lava during eruption, it was never been a reason for the people to impede Catholic faith and festivities in this place.

Katibawasan Falls

The 250-feet majestic beauty cascades to a rock pool surrounded by ground orchids, wild ferns, trees and boulders. Its ice-cold waters provide an ideal summer splash to locals and tourists alike. Rock picnic tables, seats and cookout facilities are available for use.

This is my first time to visit a falls. I was wonderful experience a nature breath taking adventure although the water this time is not immense.

Ardent Hot Spring

The local hot spa is a natural pool of about 40 degrees centigrade springing from depths of Mount Hibok-Hibok. The Municipality of Mambajao has provided cottages, restaurant and dormitory facilities that cater to local and foreign tourists. It has picnic huts, cookout facilities and restroom for visitors.It is ideal for night swimming, a place to rejuvenate both mind and body.

White Island

Two kilometers off the coast of Agoho, Mambajao is the Camiguin's popular sand bar. At times it is in the shape of the letter C, sometimes the letter I, depending on the ocean tide. It has the picturesque Mount Hibok-Hibok and Old Vulcan as its backdrop. It is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling.

It was a windy morning when I visited this Island and the rain is ready to fall. A little bit nervous because water might be rough during the boat ride but it did not stop my adventure.

After stepping out the boat, the rain started to fall that made very cold. It was exciting enough because the water is hot to swim.

Sunken Cemetery

Located in Bonbon, Catarman a huge cross marker has been installed by the Provincial government to mark the community cemetery that sunk during the 1871 volcanic holocaust. Years ago, gravestones were visible during low tide. Today, it is an interesting diving site.

I did not try to take a boat to reach the cross but it was a scenic place to mesmerize how the elders do the rituals for the death.

Way Points:

From Manila, you can take direct flights of Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, or Air Philippines to Cagayan de Oro City. Flying time approximately takes one hour and 20 minutes. From Cebu, Cagayan de Oro City is even nearer -- a mere 30 minutes away. One can also take the longer but infinitely more exciting ferry trips from the North Harbor aboard the ships of WG&A, Negros Navigation, and Sulpicio Lines. Depending on the routes (sometimes they stop over at certain ports such as that of Cebu City, Iloilo City or Bacolod City), a ferry trip to Cagayan de Oro City usually takes 28 to 36 hours.

From the Cagayan de Oro City airport, you can take a cab to the bus terminal located at the Agora Market and get on a bus for Balingoan, a town 88 kilometers outside the city. At Balingoan, take a ferry bound for Camiguin Island approaching Camiguin by sea. The trip usually takes an hour before you reach Benoni Wharf of Mahinog, which is 17 kilometers from the capital town of Mambajao.
