Google has announced Android 7.1 Nougat, which adds a number of features to Android 7.0 that launched earlier this year. Android 7.1 brings new features to all devices, but it also includes a number of special things that are exclusive to Google's new lineup of Pixel phones.

Google takes control of its phone hardware just in time to enter a fairly tough arena.

We may be saying goodbye to the Nexus name, but we're not saying goodbye to the things we've come to expect from Google's premiere phones. The new Pixel still offers everything you'd expect in a flagship, including a highly-rated camera, a fingerprint sensor and the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. But, with so many current phones offering similar chipsets, features like Google Assistant could make all the difference. We'll take a closer look at some of the bells and whistles in our eventual review, but for now, there are specs to chew over. Check out the table below to see how the Pixel measures up on paper to some of its leading competition.
The Pixel phones will have Google's new launcher, Google Assistant, a phone and chat tech support service, unlimited, original-quality backup for photo and video to Google Photos, and a new Smart Storage feature that automatically removes backed up photos and video when the phone's storage is full. They also have a few cosmetic updates, including more system theming options, unique navbar icons, and a dynamic calendar date icon.

The rest of the Android world will get a new Night Light option (similar to Apple's Night Shift), touch and display improvements, Daydream VR support, gestures for the fingerprint scanner, and a number of developer-focused enhancements.

Google did not say when Android 7.1 would be available for non-Pixel devices, but the new Pixel phones will be available later this month.

A London-based startup has unveiled the world's smallest 3D-printing pen – smaller than a posh fountain pen. It's a 3D Pen. Function are similarly to the 3D printer. Writing and drawing in the air is possible With LIX.

Lix was devised by Ismail Baran and Anton Suvorov in Belgium, and Delphine Wood in London. They Said..

"We knew there were 3D pens were out there, but we wanted to make it much smaller," Wood told The Reg. "Each part has been completely redesigned from scratch to fit this particular product - all the parts are new and we designed the parts ourselves."

HOW IT WORKS:

Lix has a hot-end nozzle that sees the exit of the plastic filament ABS/PLA, which is introduced in the upper extremity of Lix Pen. The filament goes through a patented mechanism while moving through the pen to finally reach the hot-end nozzle, which melts and cools it down.

Made from aluminium, the Lix Pen is not too dissimilar in size from your average biro, making it very portable. It's also powered by USB, so can be used in any country with the local adapters.

Elon Musk has posted a video showing off Space X’s custom Iron Man-inspired interface for using hand gestures in the air to design rockets.

Musk revealed to Iron Man director Jon Favreau on Twitter last month that the Space X team had seen the interface in the movie and decided to build it in real life.

The system uses the Leap Motion controller to track hand gestures. Implementations of the system include a version using 3D glasses, a free-standing glass projection (as seen in Iron Man) and the Oculus Rift headset for the full virtual reality experience. To top it all off, the team then printed the part in titanium using a 3D laser metal printer.

A panorama is any wide-angle view or representation of a physical space, whether in painting, drawing, photography, film/video, or a three-dimensional model.

A panoramic view is also proposed for multi-media, cross-scale applications to outline overview (from a distance) along and across repositories. This so called a cognitive panorama is a panoramic view over and a combination of cognitive spaces.

Nowadays Panorama Photography becomes Popular because of the significant rate of Smartphone users.

Panorama photos is a new way of taking photos, which appear much wider and captures more area than normal photos. Starting from Android devices, Panorama feature made its’ entry to other smartphones, cameras, and even a Panorama ball which captures 360 Panorama photos named Squito.

How Panorama works is it captures different parts of the area separately while you move your phone/camera and stitches them together intelligently to make it one big photo. These are wide photos and have more resolution than ordinary photos we see in everyday life.

Now, Here it is the biggest ever made Panorama photo. This is not just the biggest panorama photo captured ever, this is also the 2nd biggest photo. This is a 600,000 pixels wide 360 degree panorama captured in Tokyo.

The interesting thing is, even Photoshop can’t handle this panorama as the maximum resolution Photoshop supports is 300,000 pixels and this panorama is its double. The photo is captured using Canon 7D with 400mm f/5.6L lens and the camera was kept there for 12 hours to stitch the photos it captured.

All in all, here are some mind-blowing stats. There were 10,000 photos captured and stitched together by a 12 core Fujitsu Celsius R920 workstation which needed around 192GB of RAM to make the photo load. It took 12 weeks of processing for the final upload by Jeffrey Martin.

Sony has been toying with its personal 3D viewer concept for some time but things are about to get serious.

Last year, Sony brought the HMZ-T2 to IFA and tried to convince us to wear a 3D display helmet; at IFA 2013, the company is hoping that cutting the cord with the new HMZ-T3W will persuade us to open our wallets.

As before, the concept is straightforward: two small OLED screens that give the impression of a much larger display, optional 3D, and the privacy of your own virtual screening room. This time around, however, at least one of the cords has disappeared, though it’s not quite the wireless nirvana Sony might like you to believe.

The resolution of each OLED panel hasn’t changed, and so you still get 720p 1280 x 720. However, Sony has tweaked both the software that drives them and the lenses in front of them, and so the overall quality is said to have increased. We couldn’t test old versus new side-by-side, but the colors and brightness looked good from the smartphone source plugged in.

Smartphone support is new - do this and you'll find yourself viewing a very inflated version of your phone screen in real time. It's interesting that Sony is pushing this for gaming too as recent rumours suggest that a dedicatedPS4 version is on the horizon.

So how best to describe the experience? It's pretty much the equivalent of sitting in your own private cinema. The viewer replicates a 750-inch TV screen from 20m away - a 1280x720 OLED display for each eye - that can play in either 2D or 3D.

However unlike the Oculus, the display is fixed. Move your head around and the big screen will follow your eyeline meaning you can watch with your head at any angle.

On the underside of the goggles are two sliders for optical adjustment, a four-way menu button and two volume buttons. The headset also comes packed with a pair of MDR-XB90 headphones that create 7.1 surround sound.

The never ending battle between Korean manufacturers Samsung and LG has moved to its inevitable next level, as LG has introduced an even larger super high-res OLED than its competitor's 55-inch models. The new high water mark is this 77-inch Ultra HD curved OLED it's showing off at IFA 2013, which is a step up in pretty much every way possible and even makes us recall the LCD size wars of the mid '00s. Whether or not we asked for it, it's bringing new display technology, a rare shape and of course, that truly outstanding size. It's only a concept now, but so was the $15,000 55-inch version at one point so we'd suggest keeping your black card handy.

LG's says its 77-inch Ultra HD curved OLED TV is the largest of its kind. The television was unveiled at the ongoing IFA consumer electronics and appliance trade show in Berlin.

LG had launched a 55-inch curved OLED TV eight months ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The TV has a 4K Ultra HD resolution that had four times the pixels than 1080p HD

Panasonic's 4K Toughpad tablet initially debuted at CES in January, but here at IFA in Berlin, the company is finally ready to shed some light on availability. Speaking at a press conference focused on the device, GM Jan Kampfer detailed the giant slate, which includes a fiberglass housing and sports a 3,840 x 2,560 (230 ppi) power-efficient IPS display with 176-degree viewing angles. The UT-MB5 supports 10-finger touch and includes a Bluetooth-enabled optical Anoto Live Pen with a six-hour battery life and palm rejection. The Toughpad was designed with creative types in mind, such as artists and architects -- though we wouldn't mind having one around as a fantastic (albeit pricey) portable 4K movie viewer.

There will be two models: a Standard flavor that weighs in 2.3kg and includes 4GB (expandable to 8GB) of RAM and a 128GB SSD, and a 2.7kg Performance model with 8GB RAM (expandable to 16GB) and a 256GB SSD. The company is targeting design pros with that latter version, such as those working with 3D modeling tools, while the lower-powered spec would be a better fit for healthcare users, retail or sales professionals. Panasonic aimed for workstation performance here, so both devices include Intel Core i5 processors and run on Windows 8.1. There are three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, an SD card slot and an optional desktop cradle and mounting point adapter. They're also quite durable, and are reinforced to survive 76 cm (2.5 ft) drops. The Standard model will ship in November, while the Performance slate is expected in early 2014.

Microsoft is reporting that the device will ship in the US and Europe beginning this Saturday, September 7th, but Panasonic executives at the IFA event are confirming a November timeframe. The Toughpad on stage is being described as a "prototype," further reinforcing that the slate is not ready to ship.

Panasonic reps quoted pricing for the standard version at €4,508 (about $6,000), with the Performance version MSRP to be announced. The optional pen will retail for €280 (about $370).

After showing off one new version of its logo every day for the past 30 days, Yahoo! has now debuted its actual new corporate logo. It's the first redesign in 18 years for the company that helped to popularize searching for things on the Internet.

Creating a new logo that's being made to replace something as well known as Yahoo's original design is no easy task. Indeed, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer posted this morning on her personal Tumblr page that she helped to create the new logo in a weekend session earlier this summer with the company's logo team

Mayer wrote that she and her team decided not to put any straight lines in the new logo, while also adopting a sans serif font that slims down the letters compared to the original. There are also no lower case letters in the new Yahoo! logo. The exclamation point was tilted nine degrees which Mayer says gives the logo "a bit of whimsy."

The logo's specific color name is Pantone Violet C, according to Mayer. She added, "For the texture, we came up with the nice idea of creating a chiseled triangular depth to the logo - this causes the letter Y to appear in the shading at the ends of each of the letters."

Samsung had its own much hyped devices leading up to IFA and led its show by unpacking the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

The textured, leathery backed handset packs the latest version of Android,Android 4.3 and a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen plus the S-pen, the key to unlocking and manipulating your Note.

The Galaxy Note 3 will be rolling out September 25.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch was also a big deal in a small package

It seems sleek, and feature filled with apps plus a 1.9MP camera that snaps pics and records Full HD vids and different non-interchangeable strap colors.

The Galaxy Gear Smartwatch will be available in stores on September 25 in more than 100 countries, however, the U.S. and Japan have to wait until October to get their hands on the new device.

Pricing for the new device has come in at £299/$299 for the U.K. and U.S.

Samsung also revealed a new tablet in the form of the 10-inch Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2014 Edition.

The new Galaxy 10.1 has a WQXGA LCD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. There will be three connectivity options: Wi-Fi only, Wi-Fi plus 3G and Wi-Fi with LTE.

There are three storage options too - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB - plus microSD support.

IFA 2013: all the latest news : Asus

Asus announced the new Transformer Pad with Tegra 4.

The 10.1-inch Android tablet has been revamped with a 1.9GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor, along with a 2560x1600 IPS display.

The new pad is also touted to last at least two days between charges thanks to a supposed 17-hour battery life.

But that's not all from Asus. In fact, the company has plans to release a bunch more tech soon.

The X102BA, an Ultraportable laptop that sports a 10.1-inch HD display with 10-point multi-touch for navigating Windows 8 has been unveiled as

well.

Inside is an AMD A4-1200 1GHz dual-core APU with integrated Radeon HD 8180 graphics, which the company claims "balances multi-tasking performance with energy efficiency."

A refresh of the Fonepad was also announced - with a new glossy rear cover and extra speaker on the front, and dubbed it the Fonepad 7. The tablet comes with a 7-inch HD 1280 x 800 display and offers voice calling and 42Mbit/s download speeds. It's also powered by an Intel Atom Z2560 processor.

But wait there's another: The 6-inch Android tablet, Fonepad Note 6. It comes packed with a Full HD Super IPS+ display with both multi-touch and stylus inputs. It's also powered by the new Intel Atom Z2580 processor clocked at 2Ghz. Meanwhile there's HSPA+ and 3G to keep you connected.

And last but not least, Asus also announced the Memo Pad 8 and Memo Pad 10. While different in size, both Android tablets offer 1280x800 resolution displays and quad-core processors.

The Memo Pad 8 comes in an 8GB model with a 5MP rear camera and 1.2MP front-facing snapper. The 10, meanwhile, comes in 8GB and 10GB versions and has a 10-inch display.

Even more refreshes are on the way from Asus with the Zenbook getting a powerful upgrade.

The new Zenbook models are known as the UX301 and UX302 and all have new latest-generation Haswell Intel processors, beefed-up graphics and a high resolution WQHD display on certain versions.

They also have the latest-gen Intel Core processors from the Core i5-4200U up to a high-end 28W Core i7-4558U option. And to power that high-end screen, you either get Intel Iris or Nvidia GeForce GT 730M with Optimus auto-switching graphics.

IFA 2013: all the latest news

IFA 2013 has kicked off in Berlin with tech, tech and more tech.A few rumored phones (and a watch) are rumors no more, and of course there are tablets, TV's and laptops galore.

Sony at IFA 2013

The long awaited Sony flagship, the Sony Xperia Z1(formerly the Honami and Xperia i1) was announced and shown off at IFA.

The much hyped "best of Sony" definitely hit high marks with this new Xperia.

It's an impressive phone that packs so much technology inside you can't help but enjoy all the treats on offer - and it's well packaged in a way that makes us love to try all the different features.

The Sony Xperia Z1 release date is now set for some time in September 2013, with pricing to be confirmed in the near future.

Aside from the water and dust proof Xperia Z1, Sony also announced the arrival of three new Vaio laptops.

First off is the crisp and clean looking Vaio Tap 11. Packed with Windows 8 and apparently meant to compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro, this machine has a Full HD display, stylus and the Pro-esque kickstand.

This 11.6-inch slimline tablet with keyboard is slated for an October 2013 release.

The second of the trio is a hybrid device, called the Vaio Fit. Coming in three different sizes, the Vaio Fit is actually a trio itself boasting 13.3-inch, 14-inch and 15.5 inch screens respectively

The Vaio Fit also comes out autumn 2013.

Lastly, Sony is upgrading its Vaio Tap 20 to the Vaio Tap 21 by making it bigger and providing an aluminum finish. It might not be a complete replacement but the Tap 21 will feature a 21.5-inch Full HD display with better resolution and the latest Haswell processors.

Samsung jumped head first into the smartwatch field with the Galaxy Gear. It’s made out of stainless steel for the body and futuristic material for the strap. The heart of Gear is a 1.63″ Super AMOLED touch screen with 320 x 320 resolution (that’s 277ppi pixel density).

In a throwback to the S9110 watch phone, the Galaxy Gear features a speaker and mic, so it can handle calls (with a noise cancellation mic), but also understand voice commands with S Voice.

Unlike the rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Gear does not run Android, but needs a connection to a Galaxy device – Galaxy S III and S4, Note II and III, Note 10.1 2014, the older devices (that is not Note III or 10.1 2014) will need a software update.

The connection is achieved through power-efficient Bluetooth 4.0 LE. The watch itself is powered by an 800MHz processor with 512MB RAM. A 315mAh battery provides juice for “more than a day, which is another way of describing the rating of 25+ hours.

The watch uses its Bluetooth connection to the smartphone for the Auto Lock feature – if you're over a meter and a half away, i.e. the phone isn't in your pocket or backpack, it will lock the phone. The Find My Device feature will help you get your smartphone back by making it beep, flash its lights and vibrate.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear features an autofocus 1.9MP camera with a BSI sensor that can capture 720p video. It can even do Sound & Shot snaps. All that is stored on 4GB of internal storage.

That’s great for capturing fleeting moments of your life which will be gone by the time you take your phone out of the pocket. With an accelerometer and gyroscope the Gear will also help your workouts by counting your steps and tracking your runs.

The Galaxy Gear measures 36.8 x 56.6 x 11.1mm and weighs 73.8g. It will be available later this month in most of the world, but the US and Japan will get it in October. Color options for the wrist band include Jet Black, Mocha Grey, Rose Gold, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige and Lime Green.

Back to the specs, the slate also brings a micro HDMI port, a full sized USB 3.0 port, dual speakers and a built in infrared remote. We’ve also got a bundled TV SideView app for browsing TV shows and as far as the design goes, the Tap 11 relies on the OmniBalance look adopted by the Xperia Z and Tablet Z. Under the hood you’ll find a Haswell chip (Core i3, i5 or i7), up to 512 GB of SSD and probably a bucketload of RAM. No pricing has been announced, but the product is coming at the end of the month.

Potential 'Comet of the Century' to Buzz by Mars

Earthlings may be treated to a dazzling celestial display this fall as Comet ISON makes a suicidal plunge toward the sun. But spacecraft exploring Mars is poised to get close-up views of the icy wanderer first.

"Comet ISON is paying a visit to the Red Planet," astronomer Carey Lisse of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, said in a statement. "On Oct 1st, the comet will pass within 0.07 AU from Mars, about six times closer than it will ever come to Earth."

One AU, or astronomical unit, is the distance between the Earth and sun, about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). Comet ISON's Mars flyby, at 0.07 AU, will be about 6.5 million miles (10.4 million km).

Comet ISON may brighten enough for NASA's Mars rover Curiosity to see it from the surface of the Red Planet. However, Lisse said the best chance for a Martian sighting lies with the space agency's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. [Photos of Comet ISON: A Potentially Great Comet]

The MRO satellite is equipped with a powerful telescope named HiRISE that is intended to take pictures the Red Planet's surface. But researchers think the instrument will be capable of turning its gaze into space to detect the comet's atmosphere and tail.

"The camera is designed for rapid imaging of Mars," the HiRISE's telescope's principal investigator, Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, said in a statement. "Our maximum exposure time is limited compared to detectors on other space telescopes. This is a major limitation for imaging comets. Nevertheless, I think we will detect Comet ISON."

The satellite is set to take observations of the comet on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and 2. The observations could help researchers prepare for a comet that is set to fly even closer to Mars in October 2014.

"The science value of observing Comet ISON is hard to predict. We've never tried such a thing before," McEwen said. "However, this is good practice for Comet Siding Spring, which will pass much closer to Mars in 2014."

A total of 16 NASA spacecraft and even more telescopes on Earth will be observing Comet ISON as it approaches.

"Our goal is to have every telescope on Earth pointed at the comet when it emerges from the sun," says Lisse. "The Mars flyby will give us a sneak preview, providing data we need to predict what we might see."

On Nov. 28 — Thanksgiving Day in the United States — ISON will make its closest approach to the sun, or perihelion, skimming just 730,000 miles (1.2 million km) or so above the surface.

If the icy dust ball doesn't get ripped apart by extreme solar forces, some astronomers have said it could be the "comet of the century," possibly shining brightly enough to be seen during the daytime.

"If ISON's nucleus is much bigger than 0.5 km, it will probably survive its Thanksgiving Day brush with the sun," Lisse said. "It could turn into one of the most spectacular comets in many years."

Microsoft PixelSense allows a display to recognize fingers, hands, and objects placed on the screen, enabling vision-based interaction without the use of cameras. The individual pixels in the display see what's touching the screen and that information is immediately processed and interpreted.

Think of it like the connection between the eye and the brain. You need both, working together, to see. In this case, the eye is the sensor in the panel, it picks up the image and it feeds that to the brain which is our vision input processor that recognizes the image and does something with it. Taken in whole…this is PixelSense technology.

A step-by-step look at how PixelSense works:

1. A contact (finger/blob/tag/object) is placed on the display

2. IR back light unit provides light (though the optical sheets, LCD and protection glass) that hits the contact.

3. Light reflected back from the contact is seen by the integrated sensors

4. Sensors convert the light signal into an electrical signal/value

5. Values reported from all of the sensors are used to create a picture of what is on the display

6. The picture is analyzed using image processing techniques

7. The output is sent to the PC. It includes the corrected sensor image and various contact types (fingers/blobs/tags)

Tactus Technology is showcasing its next-gen mobile tactile tech at SID Display Week 2012 in Boston.

 Essentially, Tactus has created a Tactile Layer component that generates a haptic user interface (UI) with real physical buttons, guidelines, and shapes which rise out of the surface from any touchscreen.  

A Tactus spokesperson told TG Daily that its layer panel is the "world’s first" deformable tactile surface capable of creating dynamic physical buttons that users can actually see and feel in advance of entering data into the device.   So how does it work?

Well, Tactus uses microfluidic technology to create physical buttons that rise from the touchscreen to give users the experience or feeling of operating a physical keyboard. When no longer needed, the buttons recede back into the touchscreen, leaving no trace of their presence.

The Tactile Layer panel is a completely flat, transparent, dynamic surface that adds no extra thickness to the standard touchscreen display since it replaces a layer of the already existing display stack.

When triggered, the thin layer deforms and buttons or shapes of a specific height, size and firmness appear on the surface of the screen. Users can feel, press down and interact with these physical buttons just like they would use keys on a keyboard.   

Tactus Technology expects its Tactile Layer to help power a new generation of smartphone, tablets, ebook readers, gaming devices and automotive displays.

Ivy Bridge reviews mostly agree that the new architecture doesn’t overclock as well as Sandy Bridge, but that didn’t stop intrepid overclocker HiCookie from reaching 7.032GHz – a world record – with a Intel Core i7 3770K running on a Gigabyte motherboard. He also set a world record for DDR3 overclocking while he was at it.

The world records have been validated by CPUz and Canard PC and you can watch them being set on video (after the break).
