Ryan's Well Foundation. The struggle to bring clean water to Africa

May be many NGOs engaged in digging wells in Africa, or the supply of the liquid element in any other way, but surely none will be born in the same way that Ryan's WellFoundation.

The Canadian NGO was founded in 2001 with a clear objective: to raise funds to carrydrinking water to developing countries.

But it all started from the initiative of a child as young as 9 years, his name, RyanHreljac.

When Ryan was still in school, learned from his teacher that there were people in manycountries around the world who died due to scarcity of drinking water. The boy, struck by this, decided to raise money to pay for the construction of a well in Africa.Unfortunately, Ryan believed that the cost of this infrastructure was $ 70, when in fact,dig a hole slashing $ 2000. However, this did not deter him and continued looking for ways to get money. Thus, in 1999, could cover the construction of its first well in a village in Uganda.

Currently, Ryan's Well Foundation has managed to bring drinking water to over 700,000people in developing countries.

Hydrological assessment of Chamcar Bei, Cambodia

In collaboration with Delft University of Technology, Engineers Without Borders, Samsam Water and Bridges Across Border Cambodia, four master students Water Management will visit Cambodia to perform a hydrological assessment. All students are at the end of their studies and want to use their gained knowledge in a field situation. By the afore mentioned organisations, the group was pointed at Chamcar Bei’s problem, where they will be working on for the next couple of months.

Chamcar Bei is a little village in South Cambodia in the Kep province where 97% of the 610 families is depending on agriculture for their first necessities.

Depending on the rainy season
The local organisation Bridges Across Borders Cambodia however has concluded that only 25% is able to grow crops all year round. This shows that the majority of the farmers is depending on the rainy season when growing crops such as rice and vegetables.

The current water management system in Chamcar Bei consists of several big reservoirs which retain stormwater in the rainy season. If necessary this water can be transported to the farmers through irrigation channels. However, this irrigation system does only reach a small part of the village, moreover most irrigation channels are in poor condition.

Climate Change
Due to a decrease in the amount of rainfall combined with less frequent rainfall, there is less water available to retain than in former years, which has led to a strong increase in water shortage.

In order to renew, improve, expand and optimize the current water system more data is needed about the water availability. The way to gain this data is performing an extensive hydrological research.

Hydrological Research is necessary
The hydrological research will include:

Mapping water resources, such as rain, rivers, wells and groundwater
Determining the water quality of the various water resources
Investigating which water resource is used for which purpose

Primarily this research will focus on a precise determination of the available water throughout the year. Only if this is known it will be possible to properly design a new irrigation system that would divide the water equally over the farmers.

Projects in Cameroon:Construction of two wells in Makary

Makary is in a semidesert area, although water in aquifers. From June to Octoberthe communications with the capital are impractical. The soil is sandy, with clay layers below. The lack of drinking water has been one of the most terrible plaguesthis area and that has caused many deaths and many infectious diseases.Women must walk many miles to collect water and then transported in largecontainers on their heads. This water is contaminated by animals and excrement, lacking toilets and drains.

Population: the council of elders, local chiefs and traditional leaders, women's committee and youth committee, met in assembly and after long deliberationsidentified as a priority the construction of three wells in the three most populatedneighborhoods Makary to supply the population of clean drinking water. This wellis able to avoid hundreds of deaths and fought to secure the population of many diseases. With this great improvement in health, may devote their efforts to work collaboratively to develop their people.

beneficiaries

Both direct and indirect beneficiaries are the 250,000 people of Makary, since they all can enjoy the benefits of clean water nearby. Water is available to all who need it, without discrimination for reasons of ethnicity, gender or age.
People brought everything in their power:
-donation of the land, provided by the authorities,
-clearance work,
local-carrying materials for building stones, sand and water
-transport of other materials, (this was very expensive as they are within 300 miles of Makary).

They believe that will continue to grow in intensity of droughts, floods, storms, meltingglaciers and the rise in sea levels.

A United Nations report finds that 1,197 million people lack access to water sources and 2,742 no sewage dumps. An investigation by the WorldwatchInstitute in 2005, estimates that in the "2015 about 3,000 million people-40percent of the estimated world population for those years living in countries withwater stress due to population growth." There is talk of water stress when water supply is far below the demand of the population.

Currently, about 1,400 million people, mostly in developing countries are faced daily with the sharp swords ofthe environmental threat.

Water is one of the most important things on earth. Every living thing needs water for its survival. Without water, plants, animals, microbes - everything, will perish.
Our bodies are composed of about 75% water. So we are literally walking bags of water. Water allows our blood to flow through the blood vessels thus supplying the body with vital nutrients. Also water allows waste matter to be eliminated from the body via the excretory system. Our need for water becomes very apparent when we are thirsty. The taste of water going down the throat is something we all find so much pleasure in. We drink glasses of this precious transparent liquid everyday. It is vital to our life.
The first civilizations of man started near rivers. The Nile, the Tigris and Euphrates were where man began to establish themselves on the earth. In all parts of the world, the major rivers played a major part in the evolution of man.
Water is used for drinking, washing, cleaning and just about any activity we care to do. Without water, living is virtually impossible.

Water covers about two thirds of the total surface of the earth. The vast expanse of seas and oceans has long been our major sources of food and means of travel. Millions of fishes live in the sea. They provide an abundant supply of food. Most of us have eaten fish, with exceptions of those who do not eat meat. The majority of mankind will continue to eat fish.
The rivers, seas and oceans provide man with an important means of travel. In ancient times, man explored the earth via the sea. The British, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and others all reached the less developed world in their ships. They conquered or colonized what they discovered. Much of what we are today are influenced by the travelers who came over the seas in their ships long ago.
Today the waterways of the world are still of major importance to mankind. Huge oil tankers, container ships and others ply these routes. In fact many of the sea routes are overcrowded.
When there is shortage of water such as when there is a drought, then we know how terrible the consequences can be. Plants, animals and human beings perish. The affected land becomes parched and dry. Nothing grows. In the midst of the Sahara Desert where there is very little rain, there is also very little life. Mostly we get sand and more sand. No man can live there.
People who live near or around deserts know the value of water. They know how precious it is and they take great care using it. We, who live in a land where water is plentiful, think nothing of standing under the shower for half and hour. Those who live in arid areas do not have such a luxury. They cannot afford to waste water like we do.
As long as there is life on this planet, water will be here. Without it, life as we know it is impossible. Thus it is important for us to know how precious water is. We ought not to waste it or pollute it by any means. Water is just too precious.

Serving as stepping-stones towards global collaboration on water problems, the Forum is a unique platform where the water community and the policy and decision makers from all regions of the world can link together, debate and attempt to find solutions to achieve water security.

The Council's World Water Forum, organized every three years in close collaboration with the authorities of the hosting country, is the largest international event in the field of water. It primarily serves four main purposes:

To raise the importance of water on the political agenda
To support the deepening of discussions towards the solution of international water issues in the 21st century
To formulate concrete proposals and bring their importance to the world's attention
To generate political commitment

Over the years, the Forum has led the movement from the World Water Vision, a unique prospective exercise on the future state of global water resources whose results were presented at the 2nd Forum, to the establishment of concrete actions and commitments derived from the 3rd Forum.
