The Tantalizing World Of Cognac

If you follow me on social media, you know that I’m going to Cognac in September for a press trip with Hennessy. I had mentioned to a friend that I would love to go to Cognac about a month before I got invited. I would say that is the law of attraction heard and granted my wish. As you can probably guess, I'm excited to go Paris/Cognac and find out more about Hennessy as well as the history of Cognac.

I’m doing extensive research before I go on the trip. It’s definitely a spirit with a lot of amazing history. All that being said, I will be sharing more Cognac information with you, that includes facts, recipes, cocktails, etc.

Here’s three things to know about the seductive spirit:

Cognac is made in Cognac, France.

Cognac is a town in southwestern France where the spirit is made. I’ve had people look at me funny when I tell them that I’m going there. It takes a few seconds for it to register. I guess one could say that it’s not the most visited spot in France, but maybe it should be. The spirit that shares its namesake has been made there for over 300 years. Besides the Cognac distilleries there is a riverside and French architecture to explore.

Cognac is a French brandy.

Cognac is distilled from white wine grapes. It must be twice distilled in copper pots and aged in French oak barrels for at least two years. The spirit is what the French call an eau du vie (water of life). To create different tastes of Cognac different eaux- de-vies are blended together. It’s all about the blending. There are about 200 Cognac producers, but the big players are: Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, and Courvoisier.

Cognac is not just a drink for old men and rappers.

When you think of Cognac you probably imagine an older gentleman sitting in his favorite chair sipping a glass. There is also the flip side where you think of rappers mentioning it in their songs. Who hasn’t blamed it on the Henny since Jamie Fox’s hit song “ Blame It”? There are so many layers to Cognac. First of all, the French don't drink Cognac, most of it is imported to the United States. Believe it or not a nice amount of women get their Cognac on. Did you hear the story about the woman who chugged a whole bottle of expensive Cognac instead of giving it to security at the airport? That's a woman who takes Cognac seriously. It's said that 41.3% of the Cognac drinkers are women.

Look what came in the mail.. this copy of A Modern Guide To Sherry: The Wine World's Best Kept Secret by Talia Baiocchi. I'm so excited to read it. Learning more about Sherry has been on my to do list. I have to admit that my interest in the wine started from watching the television show, Frasier.

In case you were wondering, Sherry is a fortified wine made from white grapes grown in the province of Andalusia, Spain. True Sherry only comes from that area versus California or any other wine country. It's been said that Sherry is the most neglected wine, but now you can think of it as the "comeback kid". New fans are discovering this wine and loving every minute of it. Long story short, don't sleep on Sherry. Cheers!

I have a bit of work to take care so I had to pass on a St-Germain brunch. Totally bummed about that because St-Germain is one of my favorite French liqueurs, especially when adding it to champagne.

To make myself feel better, I am having some Juvé & Camps Pinot Noir Cava. A very lovely cava with aromas of fresh red apple and strawberries to hints of honey white flowers and toasted almond. If memory serves me correctly, I first tried this cava during Cava Week in NYC. Loved it then and love it now. Great for a lazy Sunday.

Witch On Wine List: Angels and Wine

The other day I unexpectedly received two bottles of wine from Montes Winery. I had been checking out their wines because I love angels on wine labels. I was sent the Montes Cherub and Montes Twins. It was a lovely surprise to get them.

I think that I like angels on wine bottles, because it brings two things that I love together. I also know that quite a few winemakers have a spiritual connection to their wine and angels emphasis that for me. It got me thinking about other wineries that have angels in their labels.

If you are into angels and wine like me then this list is for you.

1) Whispering Angel - One of my favorite rosés. The wine is inspired by The Whispering Angel Chapel from the early 19th century. It’s such a beautiful wine. Their sister wine Rock Angel also has an angel on the label.

2) Montes Wines- As I mentioned this Chilean winery uses angels on their labels. It appears as though all of their wines have angels on them.

3) Angelica Rosé- This fruit forward rosé is sweet and light. The label has a soft angel holding roses. This wine comes from an award winning winery in Connecticut.

4) Angel Champagne- A luxury champagne that costs around $600. There was a time that Mariah Carey was attached to this champagne.I haven’t tried but I assume it’s exquisite.

5) Lost Angel Wines- These naughty wine are for naughty times. Each one of their wines has it’s own unique angel. Totally fun wines.

Wicked Wine Spiked Watermelon

There's nothing better than watermelon during the summer time, except for watermelon that has some kick to it. Just so you know, watermelon is an aphrodisiac so it's great for the senses. It improves the blood flow. (wink, wink.)

For your next soiree, brunch, or Netflix and chill night serve up this spiked watermelon to help you enjoy your evening.

Wicked Wine Spiked Watermelon

1(10 lb) seedless watermelon
1(750 ml) bottle sparkling wine or white wine

Cut a hole in a ripe watermelon and insert a funnel.
Pour in as much wine in the watermelon as possible, and then let it sit in the fridge, add more wine every three to four hours as it’s slowly absorbed. (A 10-pound melon can soak up a bottle of wine overnight.)
Slice the watermelon or freeze the flesh for base for blender drinks.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine threw a soiree to celebrate the 100 Best Restaurant in America list in their

annual August issue. The event was held at Marta (which made the list) in the Bradbury Hotel in Manhattan. We noshed on Marta's delicious pizza and pasta. The wine was overflowing and cocktails were conjured.

Check in with yourself to make sure that things are on track. You should have plenty of “aha moments.” Pay attention to the information that comes in. Write all the goodness in your journal. Leo- (July 23- August 22)

Good times are headed your way this month. The struggle has been real, but girlfriend.. it’s coming to a close. You have hung in there and the universe is answering your call. Tasting Notes: Bailly Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Reserve Brut

I love spending quality time with a bottle of Bailly Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Reserve Brut. It has good bubbles and great aromas of vanilla and pears. If ever there was a wine flirty on the tongue, it's this one. Perfect for mimosas or bellinis. However it's so delicious on it's own so you may not want to mix it with anything.

The bubbly is from hand-picked grapes and features a mix of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay, and Aligoté grapes. It's quite food friendly and will go great with fish, salmon, truffle fries, brie, basically anything that you want. Get more than one bottle because you are going to love it.

This crémant that will put a big smile on your face! I give it a big thumbs up with a round of applause.
