Excited to finish this small painting after attending a workshop in Colorado with Jill Soukup on Horse Painting. Its was intensive anatomy and color theory work as well as drawing and painting. It was fun to be with 14 other women of like mind in a beautiful setting with horses all around. The Nature Conservancy Zapata Ranch near the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado was the perfect setting. A truly wonderful experience. Thanks go to my indulgent husband.

This is the second painting from a photo I took of Lillian, my granddaughter, in 2022.

I think I may try again, it is so hard to capture a likeness. Still happy with my portraits looking like humans, though!

I head up north in Michigan to ride the Shore to Shore trail on horseback and though I have ridden the whole thing at once I now mostly just ride sections. On my way home from one of the camps I saw this old barn in a valley and thought it was a lovely image and drove on. The next time I happened upon it I stopped to take a photo and that is what this was painted from. I think this was around Labor Day and already there was plenty of color up in northern Michigan

I joined fellow Plein Air Artists of West Michigan at a small park north of Kalamazoo, MI in the middle of farm country. Spring was trying very hard to make its way in and there was a lot of snow melting all around.

A Little Spring

This was from a fall day last year at The Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery in Kalamazoo, MI.

It was a little more of a gray day starting out but at the last a bit of blue sky appeared and saved it from being too depressing. The dried grasses all had subtle coloring and it ended up being more interesting than I thought it might be. The little bubbling water gives it some action and interest.

This was juried into a show at the Carnegie Center for the Arts in Three Rivers, MI.

Markin Glen as summer fades

Went painting at Markin Glen county park last summer in Kalamazoo, MI and captured the changing leaves of this large tree by the swimming lake. There are geese all over, some of them thinking about heading south, I'm sure.

A Little Reflection

I painted this last fall on a plein air outing with Richard and some folks from around Jackson, MI at a park near them. It was filled with concrete bridges that were "sculpted" to look like branches across this small stream. I was drawn to this small section of creek with a lawn of leaves across the way.

I had this hung in the massage room of a friend and it sold from there. I find it soothing, too.

Painted again at Markin Glen on what promised to be a rain free day but changed its mind about 2 hoursf into this painting. Waited for a break in the rain under my umbrella trying to keep the painting and the pastels dry and then packed up and headed home. By the time I was 10 minutes away the sun was shining brilliantly but I didn't have much to do on the painting and finished it on the back deck at home in the sunshine and dried everything out as well. Very happy with this one.

Spent some time earlier this summer at Markin Glen County Park in Kalamazoo, MI. It has lovely walking and biking trails and a great little beach. Also plenty of great views for plein air studies.

Purple Haze

Got out a little earlier that usual to join Richard and Erwin at the Fish Hatchery. Got to use some differentcolors at that time of day. It may also have been the effect of haze from Canadian wild fires that has been affecting our air quality greatly.

I participated in the Three Rivers Art Guild Paint Out the Town a few weeks ago and received FIRST place for Railroaded. It will be on display in a small gallery in Three Rivers until the end of the month.

The painting had to be done plein air in a three hour time frame, then framed and presented for judging.

I did this last fall from a photo I took the year before of my granddaughter, Noli. I think it is one of the best portraits I have done and it was submitted to one show and rejected. I think I'll try another time before giving it to the family. One thing I particularly like besides the portrait is the bark on the tree which has an amazing amount of color that is not brown! That was fun.

I painted this last fall at Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery on a beautiful fall day. I didn't have to do much in the studio, this was good to go. Posted it on my Facebook page and friend Vince said "this is my favorite" and so for his admiration it became his.

I just got back from horse camping at Fort Custer State Recreation Area in Augusta MI. I took some time Saturday afternoon to do a watercolor of a place just outside of camp and was encouraged to put it in our auction. Surprisingly to me it sold!!! I had a pleasant time painting and it benefited our club. Win win.

My husband's cousin asked for a portrait of her daughter's beloved Golden Retriever for a Christmas gift way back in the summer and I warned her that I was a procrastinater and she may have given me too much time. It is done before Christmas, to be sure, but it still has to be mailed and framed but it will be out of my hands for that. Sorry, Annie, but I do hope you like it.
