Samsung Electronics has officially launched Android 8.0 Oreo beta programme forGalaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones that comes with "Samsung Experience" 9.0 user interface (UI) on top and is being introduced to select users based in the US, the UK and South Korea.

"Previously known as 'TouchWiz', 'Samsung Experience' is based on the Android OS and has expanded beyond the user interface to provide Galaxy users with a consistent and seamless experience across all Samsung mobile software, apps and services," the tech giant announced late Thursday.

"This change is in recognition of the increasing suite of unique services Samsung has developed for the Galaxy devices," the company added. "Samsung Experience" version 8.5 was released with Galaxy Note 8. ‘Samsung Experience’ 9.0 is based on the latest version of the OS built on the Android Oreo UI and UX and will feature on the next flagship Galaxy device.The new update reportedly brings a number of new functionalities to bothGalaxy S8 and S8+.

In addition to standard features of Android Oreo, it adds improvements to things like "Edge Screen" and "Samsung Keyboard".

WhatsApp services restored after brief global outage

Whatsapp went down for a brief period of time and nearly 60 percent of users worldwide were unable to either send messages or log into the app

WhatsApp users across the world, including in India, heaved a sigh of relief on November 3 after the instant messaging app was restored after it went down globally, sending people into a tizzy. Users were able to send and receive messages and could log into their WhatsApp accounts after a brief outage period.

According to an Independent website DownDetector, 60 percent of customers were having issues connected to Facebook-owned WhatsApp. Users experienced problems sending texts or were unable to log into the app.

"A further 25 percent report issues receiving messages and 14 percent are struggling to login," Express.co.uk said. Several users took to Twitter to confirm the development and vent their frustration with #whatsappdown trending on the micro-blogging site.

WhatsApp was also down in India and people were unable to connect with their friends or relatives. People experienced a similar situation in May this year for a few hours in most parts of the world.

WhatsApp has 1.3 billion monthly active users globally with over 200 million users in India.

Leaked Gionee M7 Plus images reveals Univisium display, leather back

The Gionee M7 Plus is expected to come with a dual rear camera setup and sport a Univisium display with an 18:9 aspect ratio

Images of Gionee’s upcoming smartphone the M7 Plus have leaked online. The leaked hands on images reveal that the smartphone may sport a taller 18:9 aspect ratio and a premium leather back. Popular tipster Evan Blass posted the images on Twitter and noted that the 6.47-inch display on the device could be Gionee’s biggest display on a smartphone till now.

The images of the Gionee M7 Plus reveal a big display with really thin bezels, but it's not completely bezel-less. It is also shown with a dual rear camera setup with the fingerprint sensor placed below it. The smartphone is missing a physical home button.

No specifications of the M7 Plus have leaked yet but some reports suggest that the phone may be launched alongside the Gionee M7 Power. The company is expected to soon launch the M7 Power in India. It is rumoured to come with 5000mAh battery and is a low-power variant of the M7 launched in Thailand last month.

The smartphone sports a 6-inch IPS LCD FullView display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 435 chipset, coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. It also supports expandable storage up to 256GB via a microSD card slot.

The M7 Power comes with a 13MP rear camera with autofocus and an LED flash. It sports an 8MP front facing camera which can record 1080p videos at 30fps. The smartphone features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and runs company's Amigo 5.0 skin atop Android 7.1 Nougat. The Gionee M7 Power features connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and a micro USB port for charging.

Microsoft, Qualcomm set to release ARM-powered laptops with multi-day battery life

The laptops running on the Qualcomm platform are expected to be released by December this year. Microsoft says that the laptops have very efficient batteries, which last for a day or two.

Qualcomm and Microsoft confirmed last month that they are working on Windows 10 laptops, which will be powered by Qualcomm chips. Both the companies have reaffirmed their plans and also claim that the said laptops will offer multi-day battery life. According to a report by Trusted Reviews, the companies revealed that they are indeed working hard to release laptops with ARM processors before this year ends.

During the annual 4G/5G summit in Hong-Kong, Don McGuire, VP of Global Product Marketing for Qualcomm said, “In December last year, [we] set a timeline for one year out, that we would be able to announce devices. We are still moving towards that timeline.”

As the laptops are to be released in December, one would expect that the devices are undergoing testing. Pete Bernard, Microsoft’s Group Program Manager revealed that they are already testing “Hundreds” of devices internally on a daily basis. He said that the laptops show very promising battery life and perform beyond their expectations.

“We set a high bar for our developers, and we’re now beyond that. It’s the kind of battery life where I use it on a daily basis. I don’t take my charger with me. I may charge it every couple of days or so. It’s that kind of battery life.” Bernard said. He believes that the ARM-powered laptops are a game changer and will change the way people use their laptops.

Microsoft had previously announced that Asus, HP and Lenovo will be manufacturing laptops based on Qualcomm’s ARM-based platform. The report says that Microsoft may soon be bringing in more partners in order to offer the laptops at different price points.

Reliance Jio reduces validity of Rs 399 plan to 70 days, drops Rs 309 data plan

Reliance Jio has phased out Rs 309 data plan that offered 1GB 4G data per day for 56 days. The company is now offering 1GB data per day for 84 days with recharge of Rs 459.

Reliance Jio has updated its tariff plans with more streamlined offers that brings hike in price and axes some older plans. Reliance Jio last updated its tariff plansin July where it offered Dhan Dhana Dhan benefits for another 84 days with recharge of Rs 399. With the update, Reliance Jio's data plan starts at Rs 52 and goes all the way up to Rs 4,999 for its prepaid users. For postpaid subscribers, the data plans range from Rs 309 to Rs 999.

The most notable change is the death of Rs 309 data plan, which offered 1GB4gdata per day along with unlimited calls and text messages for 56 days. The company has also revised its Rs 399 plan, which is the one most Jio users have been subscribing to since it moved to a paid subscription model.

With recharge of Rs 399, Jio continues to offer 1GB 4G data per day, unlimited free voice calls and unlimited SMS for 70 days as opposed to 84 days previously. The company is now introducing new Rs 459 plan that offers 1GB 4G data, unlimited free voice calls and SMS for 84 days

On Rs 509 plan, reliance jio is slashing the validity from 60 days to 49 days and users get 2GB data per day, unlimited voice calls and SMS benefits. On Rs 999 recharge, Jio users get 90 days validity, 60GB 4G data, unlimited voice and SMS benefits. The company is also increasing validity on Rs 1,999 plan from 120 days to 180 days. However, the validity on Rs 4,999 data plan is being reduced from 390 days to 360 days.

Other recharge options include Rs 52 data plan offering 7 days validity with unlimited 4G data and high speed data capped to 150MB per day, unlimited free voice calls and 70 SMS benefits. On recharge of Rs 98 and Rs 149, Jio is offering validity of 14 days and 28 days respectively. With Rs 98 recharge, Jio users get 2.1GB unlimited 4G data, unlimited voice calls and 140 SMS. With Rs 149 recharge, there is 4.2GB unlimited data, unlimited calling and benefit of 300 SMS. The company notes that its unlimited data plan downgrades speed to 64kbps after exhaustion of fair usage. For postpaid users, Jio is changing validity from 28 days to one bill cycle. Jio users now have an option to subscribe to plans priced at Rs 309, Rs 409, Rs 509, Rs 799 and Rs 999.

Jio recently announced Diwali Dhan Dhana Dhan offer where it offered 100 percent cashback to users recharging with Rs 399 in the form of 8 vouchers valued at Rs 50 each. The move made it clear that Jio is planning to change the pricing and validity of its Rs 399 plan. During the quarterly result announcement, Reliance announced Jio leads its industry peers when it comes to average revenue per user and aims to become profitable in the next few quarters. reliance jio has over 138 million active users and promises to give 20 percent more data benefit to its Prime subscribers over competitors. Vodafone offers 90GB 4G data, unlimited calls for six months at Rs 399

Vodafone is offering Rs 100 off on the recharge and consumers will get 90GB 4G data over a period of six months. Vodafone RED customers will receive an additional 5GB data per month.

After Jio announced its plans for the Diwali, Vodafone has followed suit and has announced a new data plan priced at Rs 499 for its customers. Both prepaid and postpaid users are eligible for the recharge and Vodafone is also offering a Rs 100 discount with it, which bring down the effective price of the plan to Rs 399.

After subscribing with the Rs 499 plan, Vodafone subscribers will get 90GB of 4G data with unlimited calling for six months. The 90GB data is spread across a period of six months, with 10GB data allowance per month. A “Free data quota” of 5GB per month is also included with the plan for Vodafone Red postpaid consumers.

Apart from the Rs 499 plan, Vodafone is also offering various RED plans ranging from Rs 399 to Rs 2,999. The Rs 499 plan by Vodafone comes after Jio announced its special Diwali “Dhan Dhana Dhan” offer which is priced at Rs 399. Jio is offering 100 percent cashback on the plan in the form of 8 vouchers. Each voucher is worth Rs 50 and can be redeemed on Jio stores, MyJio app, Jio.com, Reliance Digital stores, Jio’s partner retailers, and through services like PayTM, Amazon Pay, JioMoney, PhonePe and Mobikwik.

Vodafone and Idea are also rumoured to be working on their own 4G-enabled low cost smartphone to rival the JioPhone. They are reportedly in talks with Lava and Karbonn to manufacture the device. Airtel has also recently announced their Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone in partnership with Karbonn Mobiles at a price of Rs 1,399. Oppo F5 selfie-centric smartphone with bezel-less design launching in India on October 26

Oppo F5 will be the first smartphone from the company to feature a new bezel-less design. The Oppo F5 is expected to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and will be a selfie-centric device.

Oppo F5, the first smartphone with full-screen display design from the Chinese smartphone maker will launch on October 26. The handset was initially said to launch in the Philippines but now the company has revealed its plans for other markets as well.

GSMArena reports that Oppo plans to make its newf5 smartphone available in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The smartphone will, of course, be available in its home market as well but it is not clear whether these markets will be the only regions to get the device at launch. Apart from details of launch market, Oppo has also confirmed that the F5 will be the first smartphone from the company to feature a new display with the FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

Since the new phone is part of the F series, the company will also be highlighting the selfie features. It will be the successor to the Oppo F3 and the company is advertising a new AI beauty recognition technology that will debut as part of the Oppo F5. Oppo F5 will sport a bezel-less design with a 6-inch 18:9 display, 6GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 660 chipset. The handset is said to feature a 20MP rear camera and a dual 16MP front camera setup. It is expected to offer a beefy 4000mAh battery, however, there is no information on its final retail price.

With its bezel-less design and dual front camera setup, Oppo F5 is expected to compete against the Vivo V7+ and Honor 9i smartphones. The smartphone will be made official on October 26.

Xiaomi partners up with Big Bazaar to offer Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4 offline

The offline supermarket chain, Big Bazaar will offer both, the Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 at a special price. Xiaomi is betting on Big Bazaar's 240+ stores to expand and strengthen its offline presence in India.

After claiming to have shipped about 10 million smartphones in the month of September, Xiaomi is now planning to boost its smartphone sales offline by partnering up with Big Bazaar supermarket stores. Big Bazaar has over 240 retail stores spread across the country and Xiaomi is offering the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and theRedmi Note 4 offline with this partnership.

Manu Kumar Jain, VP of Xiaomi India tweeted the information yesterday and revealed that the company was in talks with Big Bazaar for some time now. He tweeted a picture of him alongside Kishore Biyani, Founder and group CEO of future group that owns Big Bazaar.

Jain said in his tweet, “No other brand has ever sold phones at a supermarket chain! This journey when I first met Mr Kishore Biyani few months ago.” He also said that consumers can buy the smartphones at a special price at Big Bazaar stores. However, the special price hasn’t been revealed yet. Buyers will also get a no-cost EMI option and special offers on using ICICI bank cards.

TheRedmi note 4 remains Xiaomi’s best-selling smartphone in India with over 5 million units sold online. The company claims to have sold over 25 million smartphones in India since the launch of Mi 3 in July 2014. Xiaomi claims to have sold over 1 million smartphones during the two day festive sale held on Amazon and Flipkart.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is launching in India tomorrow, October 10 at an event in New Delhi. The Mi Mix 2 is a bezel-less smartphone and will join devices like the Samsung Galaxy S8+, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG Q6, Vivo V7+, along with the upcoming iPhone X and Google Pixel 2 XL all of which sport the 18:9 form factor.

In an announcement tweet, Manu Kumar Jain said, "The wait is over.. #MiMIX2 is coming to India! Come Oct 10 and hail the Mi MIX 2." Those intersted can catch the live stream of the event here.

When the phone was first announced in China, it was announced in two variants – one regular variant and the other called the Mi MIX 2 Special Edition. Overall, there are iterations of the Mi MIX 2 not counting the special edition – one with 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage, the other with 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage, and finally, one with 6GB RAM/ 256GB storage. The special edition of the smartphone comes with an all-ceramic body, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. It isn’t clear how many of these variants will make their way to India.

Coming to the other specifications of the Mi Mix 2, the smartphone has a 5.99-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x2160 pixels. The display has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and also boasts of a DCI-P3 colour gamut. Under the hood, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. The rear of the device has a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25-micron pixels, 4-axis optical image stabilisation, 5-piece lens and an f/2.0 aperture. The smartphone also boasts of face recognition technology. The front camera on the smartphone is a 5MP shooter. It also supports Bluetooth 5.0, and USB Type-C.

As far as pricing is concerned, in China, the Mi Mix 2 starts at RMB 3299 (Rs 32,500 approx. directly converted) for the 6GBRAM/64GB storage variant whereas the 6GB RAM/128 GB storage variant is price at RMB 3599 (Rs 35,500 approx. directly converted). The 6GB/256GB storage variant comes at RMB 3999 (Rs 40,000 approx. directly converted). The special edition ceramic unibody variant is priced at RMB 4699 (Rs 46,300 approx. directly converted).

Xiaomi has a strong portfolio of products in the Indian market and the company is also making its mark in the offline space in the country. Xiaomi recently announced the Mi A1 smartphone in India which runs on stock Android and is a part of Google Android One Initiative.

A woman from China has been completely blinded in the right eye after playing Honour of Kings for 24 hours non stop.

Beware! Gaming on smartphones for prolonged periods of time can make you blind! Take it from a 21-year old woman from China who lost eyesight in one eye after playing popular mobile game Honour of Kings for 24 hours straight.

Wu Xiaojing (not her real name) spent her entire day on October 1 playing the online multi-player. Over the course of her gaming binge, she gradually started losing vision in her right eye before going completely blind in that eye.

As per Chinese news publication, The Paper, Wu who works in finance was a habitual smartphone gamer and spent most of her weekends waking up at 6AM to play Honor of Kings. "I will take a nap at 4pm, then I'll eat something and carry on till 1am to 2am," she reportedly said. "I would be so absorbed in the game that I would forget to eat or go to the bathroom," she added.

As per reports, Wu has been diagnosed with retinal artery occlusion in her right eye. The condition is caused due to severe strain on the eyes and is not very common in young people. Chances of recovering the loss of sight in this condition are very low, around 20-25 percent.

"I always say to myself: 'This will be my last round', but I just couldn't stop," she was quoted saying in reports.

Honour of Kings is one of the most popular mobile games in China, so much so that the government has deemed it “poisonous” because of its highly addictive nature. Honour of Kings has been made by Chinese tech giant Tencent and has more than 200 million downloads in the country. The game is slated to release on the Nintendo Switch platform very soon. Beta tests for the free-to-play MOBA game will begin this winter and the Nintendo Switch will get a global variant of the game once it releases.

Delayed JioPhone deliveries irk customers, company says 4G feature phone shipping in "phased manner"

Those who pre-booked the JioPhone are taking to Twitter to express their discontent over delayed deliveries of the 4G feature phone. Some customers are also complaining that the toll-free number to check the JioPhone delivery status is not working.

Reliance Jio may just fall short on its promise of delivering 6 million pre-booked JioPhone units on time. JioPhone deliveries were supposed to start back in September, however multiple Jio customers have taken to Twitter with complaints of delayed deliveries.

As a standard response to all customer grievances related to delayed JioPhone deliveries, the official Reliance Jio Twitter account has tweeted saying, “We have started the delivery of JioPhones in phased manner to avoid inconvenience.” The official Jio twitter handle further writes that all those who have pre-booked the JioPhone “will receive it as soon” with no indication of a delivery date.

Multiple users have started expressing their anger on the microblogging platform, saying that they feel cheated. Some users are also demanding a refund of the Rs 500 they spent booking the smart 4G feature phone. In response, Reliance Jio keeps replying to these user complaints with the same Tweet thread about phased deliveries.

Reliance Jio users who have pre-booked the JioPhone have an option of checking the status of their phone deliveries by calling the toll-free number - 1800 890 8900. However, some users are also complaining that the toll-free number is not working properly. When we tried to reach the JioPhone toll-free number to check the status of multiple undelivered JioPhones (as per info obtained from Twitter complaints) we were able to get through, but each query was answered with the same automated response saying that the delivery status of the device will be sent through an SMS “soon.” Interestingly, a couple of users also claim that the JioPhone is more readily available is pre-booked offline. As per some users, JioPhones have started arriving in stores but they still do not have any updated delivery status for their devices.

The JioPhone is a smart 4G feature phone which can be used to access the internet at 4G speeds, stream movies and music, browse Facebook, and much more. The device also features a digital assistant which can be controlled using voice commands. Those who have pre-booked the device can expect to get either get a unit with a Spreadtrum 9820A processor or a Qualcomm 205 chipset with a 1.2GHz Dual Core CPU.

The JioPhone is effectively free, but customers have to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 to get it. As per Jio’s terms and conditions, the JioPhone will have to be recharged for a minimum of Rs 4,500 over a period of three years, else the deposit will not be refunded to users. News of this minimum recharge lock-in also irked many who booked the feature phone and thought it did not come with any caveats.

Delayed JioPhone deliveries could cost Reliance Jio precious time when it comes to subscriber sdditions. State-run telecom operator BSNL is also said to be working on a JioPhone challenger in partnership with local manufacturers Micromax and Lava. Bharti Airtel is also planning to launch a Rs 2,500 4G feature phone to compete with the JioPhone. If competition from telecom operators was not enough, HMD Global, the Nokia brand licensee, has also experessed interest in developing a 4G feature phone if the JioPhone manages to take off well in the country.

Airtel has the fastest data network among all four major 4G service providers while Jio has the maximum availability, says OpenSignal's network analysis report. Jio's average download speed has improved but still, falls behind its peers.

Airtel offers the fastest download speed on 3G and 4g networks, says OpenSignal in its state of mobile networks report for the month of October. Around six months ago, Airtel had topped the chart for fastest download speed among 4G service providers. The new report says that Airtel offered average LTE download speed of 9.2Mbps while its 3G download speed averaged at 3.6Mbps. The speeds are, however, down from OpenSignal's last report.

While most speed test apps suggest that Jio has the fastest download speed among 4G service providers, OpenSignal crowns Airtel as the fastest among its peers. The report notes that reliance jio's LTE download speeds have improved significantly in the last six months. OpenSignal says it measured average download of 5.8Mbps on Jio's 4G LTE network, which it says is the lowest among four national 4G operators. However, it tops the overall speed charts with its massive coverage of nearly 130 million users.

Since Jio is a green field LTE-only network, the service has topped the availability chart. The report says that Jio's already impressive LTE reach has gotten even better with most users able to latch onto an LTE signal more than 95.6 percent of the time. Jio comes 32 percentage points ahead of its nearest competitor in OpenSignal's availability metric.

OpenSignal says its methodology involves 7.36 billion measurements collected from 708,504 devices during the period of June 1 to August 31, 2017. All data has been collected from users of the OpenSignal mobile app for Android and iOS.

The top three service providers - Airtel, Vodafone and Idea - saw their LTE reach improve during the test period but speeds decline. Among 4G customers, Vodafone users experienced the lowest latency while Jio has the highest latency. In 3G, both Vodafone and Airtel came out on top by offering lowest latency. The report further highlights that Jio's speeds improved at a rapid pace after the end of its free data service on March 31, 2017. It says Jio's average download speeds improved from 3.9Mbps to 5.8Mbps and Jio users "found themselves with more access to the 4G bandwidth."

Google is gearing up to announce its next-generation of Pixel smartphones at an event in San Francisco. Last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL were made by the company, with HTC as the OEM. This time around, Pixel 2 will reportedly be made by HTC, while the higher-end Pixel 2 XL is being manufactured by LG.

Google Pixel 2 is said to come with the same Edge Sense feature that we saw on HTC U11 which will be the highlight of the device. However, Edge Sense will reportedly be called Active Edge in Pixel 2 and will launch Google Assistant on squeeze.

In terms of design, the Pixel 2 will look similar to the original Pixel with minor upgrades. It is rumoured to get the same two-tone finish, rounded corners and similar size. Reports hint at thick bezles on top and bottom, and absence of dual camera setup. Other specifications include a Full HD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, and Android 8.0 Oreo. It could come in two storage variants – 64GB and 128GB.

Google Pixel 2 XL, which is company’s answer to the likes of Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8, will get LG-made AMOLED Infinity QHD display with a screen size of 5.99-inch. Apart from a bezel-less display, it will pack the latest Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, and 128GB storage. The phone will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo.

As for the price, Pixel 2 could start at $649 (Rs 42,460 approx) for the 64GB storage option. The 128GB storage option is said to be priced at $749 (Rs 49,003 approx). Google Pixel 2 XL, on the other hand, could start at $849 (Rs 55,554 approx) for the base storage model and $949 (Rs 62,008 approx) for the top-end storage variant.

Google PixelBook is company’s high-end Chromebook which will sport a premium metal design, and support new pressure-sensitive stylus called Pixel Pen. According to report, users will be able to fold PixelBook into a tablet. However, the highlight here could be addition of Google Assistant to Chromebooks. Yes, for the very first time, the search giant could announce support of its voice-assistant for Chromebooks.

Google PixelBook could start at $1,199 (Rs 78,444 approx) for the base model with 128GB storage. Other expected variants include, one with 256GB storage and another with 512GB of storage. The Pixelbook will most likely run on Chrome OS.

Google Pixel 2 launch event: Google Daydream View 2 and Home Mini

Google is also planning to upgrade its last year’s Daydream View headset. The new VR headset which will be most likely called Daydream View 2, could come in new colour variants and a motion controller. Not much is know about the Daydream View 2 at this point of time.

Google Home Mini will be company’s affordable speaker, and an answer to Amazon’s Echo Dot. The Mini home speaker could be smaller in size when compared to Google Home, unveiled last year, and will ship with Google Assistant built-in. It could priced as low as $49 (Rs 3205 approx).
