Leaders are not born.

Leaders are made - and the whole process starts inside the most uncharted territory you’ll ever encounter – your own mind.

How can you become an effective leader who inspires others, drives people toward excellence, holds people accountable, and instills a sense of trust? Learning what makes a strong leader is your first step.

You can become the leader that you have always wanted to be by following these 5 simple guidelines:

1.   Control yourself. Every great leader in history has had to become the master of self-discipline and willpower         in order to stay focused on the big picture. If you don’t have a goal or the all-consuming drive to achieve it, you can’t help others attain theirs.

·   Follow through in everything you do. As challenging as it may seem, you need to be wherever you need to be, when you need to be there, whether you want to or not. By being resolute in attacking your goals and resisting the temptation to quit when the going gets tough, you will be setting a strong example that others will follow.

·   Choose your emotional response to a situation carefully. In order to set a good example, sometimes you’ll need to practice the fine art of silencing your inner dialogue when it is ill advised.

2.   Project your goals. Before the people you lead can fully embrace your vision or work ethic, they need to understand the deeper meaning of their work. By communicating with your team every step of the way, you can ensure that they are on the same page and know what you expect from them.

·   Involve your team members in the planning process. In order to give everyone a greater sense of ownership in the end result, you must get them involved in the planning process and implementation of your ideas.

3.   Praise highly and criticize constructively. Your ability to lead others effectively will directly correlate with the way you praise and criticize others.

·   Make certain that you publicly praise those that do excellent work for you. You will gift them with a greater sense of accomplishment and the desire to do even better.

·   However, when someone does something wrong, privately offer constructive criticism. This is key. Suggest ways that they can improve and take the time to answer any questions. Your people will be more inclined to accept your input if they know it is given to help and not harm.

4.   Know your people. You can’t truly lead your tribe unless you actually understand their dreams, desires, pains, struggles and goals. If you don’t have a true awareness of the people you are working with, all the good intentions in the world are for naught.

·   Talk to your team and get to know them. By getting to know each other personally, you will strengthen the bond between you. You’ll become more than just a “boss” and they will want to do more for you.

·   Be their leader, first, and their friend second. You are the leader and from time to time you will have to make the tough call. These decisions must not be influenced by personal relationships.

5.   Make the hard call. There will be times when you have to bite the bullet and make some unpleasant decisions. Holding people accountable for their actions, demotions and firings can be difficult at times. As their leader, it is your responsibility to handle these matters.

No matter where your leadership role takes you, believe that you can be a great leader. Remember - in order to lead others, you must discipline yourself. After all, your actions will speak louder than your words.

In order to gain the respect of others, strive mightily to lead by example in every area of your life.

When you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a great leader.

How to Imprint Your Goals

Deciding to change a habit, attitude or personal situation does not automatically bring about the change desired. The decision to make the change is only the first step. The universe you live in works very much like a popular restaurant. You go in, you decide what you want, you order it, you receive it, and you digest it.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't seem to know how to order. Some are downright inept at it. They walk into this restaurant, behave like complete idiots, and they end up hungry and disappointed. Then they complain about the restaurant and post negative reviews online, despite the fact that the restaurant has received rave reviews from the most experienced food critics.

The Universal Restaurant

I can't tell you how many times I encounter people who set goals like, "I want a romantic partner," or "I want a stable job that pays more money," or "I want to lose weight." I've heard enough of this drivel to last a lifetime. It's reached the point where I may start carrying around a squirt gun and shoot people in the eye when they say stuff like this.

Those are crap goals. Don't waste your time on them. And definitely don't say them within earshot of me.

Setting such goals is the equivalent of walking into a restaurant and proclaiming, "I'm hungry. I want some food."

First, people will look at you like you're an idiot. They're only doing that because you are.

Second, you won't get fed.

If you're lucky, someone might hand you a menu and ask you what you'd like to order. You can order off the menu, or you can concoct something creative, but either way you have to be specific. If you stand there asking for food, you'll remain hungry.

Is this happening in your life right now? Are you standing at the Universal Restaurant, waiting for your desires to manifest, and receiving only static in response? Might the reason be that the wait staff can't figure out what the heck you're actually trying to order?

The Universe is extremely adept at fulfilling your desires — but only if you have the wherewithal to decide and order what you want. If you can't do that — and it matters not what excuses you have — you will remain hungry.

Sometimes the universe will take a stab at bringing your what you ask for. Then you reject it because, although it's what you asked for (such as a generic "romantic partner"), it isn't what you actually want. Then maybe the universe tries a few more times, and you continue to send back whatever it brings you. So eventually it gives up, concluding that you're an unreasonable customer and that it's better off spending its time and energy serving the patrons who know how to place an order properly. It says, "Ok, we're done for now. Call me back to your table when you've figured out what you actually want."

This made me think back over my relationships. Have I ever been able to be "just friends with women that I have broken up with? I don't think I've ever been able to have a friendship with and ex. Moreover, I always thought this was sad.

Do women who break up with their boyfriends really mean it when they say let's be friends? Or are they just trying to let the guy down easy. Or worse are they just leading a guy on to reduce the possibility for conflict?

Since when did we start arresting citizens for breaking into their homes?

And when did the police get so thin skinned, whereby they believe it is right to arrest citizens for mouthing off? If this was the case, we'd all be in jail, right?

Answer me this...If you are a cop and you come to my home because a neighbor thought I was a suspicious character and I prove that I am the owner of said house, is it okay to arrest me on general principle? You know, I got mad because you entered my home without permission. Or better yet, I told you that I was a professor at the nearby college and you said, "prove it!"

After listening to the Professor's explanation of what happened, what do you think he did that was sooooooooooo bad to deserve being arrested? Mugged and fingerprinted. You know the whole humiliating enchilada. You know how it works!
