The decision will likely derail the career of Malema, one of the country's best known politicians whose calls for radical transformation of Africa's largest economy unnerved investors and drew harsh criticism from some African National Congress leaders.The appeals panel upheld his conviction but turned back for further deliberation a decision on how long the suspension will be. Malema cannot escape suspension under ANC rules. Malema was found guilty in November by a separate disciplinary committee and sentenced to a five-year suspension. That committee will hear in 14 days testimony for mitigation of its sentence.

Report: Russia warns of 'scandal' in UN Syria vote

MOSCOW (JPOST) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of a "scandal" if a Western-Arab drafted resolution comes to a vote on Saturday in the UN Security Council, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The remarks, which Itar-Tass said Lavrov made in an interview to be aired later on state-run Rossiya-1 television, suggest Russia would likely veto the resolution if its latest proposed amendments were not taken into account.
"If they want another scandal for themselves in the Security Council, then we probably cannot stop them," Lavrov said, according to Itar-Tass. Rossiya-1 said the interview was recorded early on Saturday.
Lavrov said he hoped the draft would not come to a vote without changes "because our amendments to this draft are well-known."

Former CIA director R. James Woolsey spoke to Arutz Sheva on Thursday, on the sidelines of the 12^th Annual Herzliya Conference. Addressing the security situation in the Middle East in the wake of the Arab Spring, Woolsey said revolutions are usually divided into three phases: The first phase is very enthusiastic, the second phase is when the liberals take over and look like they’re going to move things well, and the third part is what he called the “non-attractive” part.
“We can hope that a number of these Arab revolutions veer off before they get to a most unattractive phase three,” he said. “There’s been a lot of progress away from dictatorship and toward people being able to rule themselves, but it’s far from perfect and there is a lot of uncertainty. We don’t know where these Arab revolutions – really, any of them – are going.”
Woolsey spoke about the relations between Israel and the United States, and differentiated between the tension with the Obama Administration and the general relationship between the two countries.
“I think there’s still some tension with the Obama Administration. I don’t think there’s fundamental tension between Israel and the United States,” he said, adding that the Obama Administration thought that “making nice” with the Iranians and the Syrians would work, but that did not work.
“It has not worked out well, and I hope that the Obama Administration is learning that one wants to stick closer to one’s friends than to kowtow to one’s enemies,” he said.
Woolsey, who has previously called for the release of Jonathan Pollard from prison, repeated that position in the interview. He noted that Pollard’s sentencing judge laid down three criteria for parole: That Pollard express contrition, that he help the United States understand exactly what was taken and the implications, and that he agree to forego any proceeds from anything written or televised about what he did. That is, if he writes a book about his experiences, the money would go charity.
Woolsey said that he knows that the first two conditions have been met by Pollard but added that he does not know whether the third one has been met. Nevertheless, he said, “He’s now been in prison well over 20 years, well over the time any spy from any friendly country has spent in American prisons, and he didn’t get anyone killed.”
“From my point of view,” Woolsey added, “if he would just satisfy that third requirement it ought to be possible for either parole or some kind of executive clemency to set him free.”

The Israeli security bulletin came in the midst of heated rhetoric on the part of the U.S., Iranian and Israeli political religious and military leadership and follows the recent assassination of a key scientist in Iran's nuclear enrichment program. If the rhetoric is to be believed, there is a deep concern that Israel might launch a military strike against Iran during the spring of 2012.
The intelligence community assessment of that possibility, based on interviews conducted by ABC News, is considerably more nuanced, taking into account as it does the political will of the United States during an election year, the fragile nature of Great Britain's coalition government , the willingness of other allies to join in an offensive, the roles of Russia and China and Saudi Arabia in such a confrontation, and whether Israel would really be willing to launch a unilateral strike.
"But in this situation, the political rhetoric is actually quite important," one official told ABC News. "And that is why the official position -- of the U.S, England, France, Canada, Israel and allies -- is that nothing is off the table."
An apparent shift in the Israeli/U.S. relationship has complicated matters, however, said the official. In the past, Israel would probably have given the U.S. a heads up were it to launch a strike. Now that might not be the case. Among the English-speaking allies of the U.S., say multiple intelligence officials, there is currently a very limited expectation of any early warning.
While much of the public attention has focused on Israel and the rifts within its leadership on how to respond to Iran's nuclear weapons program, the reality for Iran's leadership is also problematic. Yes, this is for real, although it's unfortunately unlikely that the prize will be revoked. AP reports that Nobel peace prize officials are facing an inquiry into why President Obama was given the Nobel peace prize a few months after taking office (Hat Tip: Verum Serum).
Nobel Peace Prize officials were facing a formal inquiry over accusations they have drifted away from the prize's original selection criteria by choosing such winners as President Barack Obama, as the nomination deadline for the 2012 awards closed Wednesday.
The investigation comes after persistent complaints by a Norwegian peace researcher that the original purpose of the prize was to diminish the role of military power in international relations.
If the Stockholm County Administrative Board, which supervises foundations in Sweden's capital, finds that prize founder Alfred Nobel's will is not being honored, it has the authority to suspend award decisions going back three years — though that would be unlikely and unprecedented, said Mikael Wiman, a legal expert working for the county.
Obama won in 2009, Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo won in 2010, and last year the award was split between Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen.
They don't really confront the issue of what Obama has actually done (or had actually done as of the closing of nominations for the prize on February 1, 2009) to bring about peace, i.e. nothing. Instead, they focus on the belief (and I'm not sure it's correct) that Obama would use military force if necessary.
Fredrik Heffermehl, a prominent researcher and critic of the selection process, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that "Nobel called it a prize for the champions of peace."
"And it's indisputable that he had in mind the peace movement, i.e. the active development of international law and institutions, a new global order where nations safely can drop national armaments," he said
Especially after World War II, the prize committee, which is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, has widened the scope of the prize to include environmental, humanitarian and other efforts, he said.
For example, in 2007 the prize went to climate activist Al Gore and the U.N.'s panel on climate change, and in 2009 the committee cited Obama for "extraordinary efforts" to boost international diplomacy.
"Do you see Obama as a promoter of abolishing the military as a tool of international affairs?" Heffermehl asked rhetorically.
I don't think that's the point. I think the point is that the prize was intended for people who have made a contribution to world peace, and not for people who might make one in the future. That's what was wrong with giving the award to Obama in the first place. Let's face it - it was an attempt by the Europeans to lash out at George W. Bush one more time. And it cheapened the prize.
It's too bad he's unlikely to lose it.

Birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen Under Fire From Islamic Cultural Invasion

(By Vadim Trukhachev h/t Vinienco) A quiet Danish town of Odense (pictured), the birthplace of the great storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, is close to becoming the arena for clashes between natives and immigrants from Muslim countries. Danish websites are full of reports stating that followers of Islam are particularly aggressively squeezing the Danish from the local area of Volsmese.
Once Andersen named island Fyn where Odense is located, the “Garden of Denmark.” Today, however, the city does not match the romantic description. According to the Internet portal Bt.dk referring to police sources, immigrants from Muslim countries conduct targeted attacks nearly exclusively at the indigenous population. “If your last name is Hansen or Nielsen and you live in Odense, especially in the area of Volsmese, the risk of being robbed is several times higher than that for those with foreign last names,” says the Danish website.
“Robberies of ethnic Danes became particularly frequent in the past few months. There is something racist about it. As a result of frequent crimes against local residents, we observe that the indigenous islanders began to leave their homeland. Over the past four months 150 robberies have been officially reported, 90 percent of which were committed against ethnic Danes,” said a police officer.
“Many young criminals openly admit that they want to make Volmese their own. Last year there was a case where a Danish family home was subjected to vandalism and theft several times a week, until finally, they decided not to come home and left. Many of robberies resemble vandalism and terrorism, and look like revenge or threat. Everybody knows about it, although the government continues to hide it well”, the policeman said.
In turn, the newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad reported that particularly observant Muslims chased one of the Iranian immigrants. “Young people told me that I should not drive with a cross in the car. Then our car was smashed and set on fire. We bought another car, but the windows were broken three times already … My kids do not wear headscarves, as 99 percent of other local children, therefore they attract more attention. It was simply not safe to let them go play. We decided to move as far away from Volsmese as possible,” a victim said.
As for the police chiefs of the island, they acknowledge the sharp rise in crime, but are not willing to comment on a possible ethnic or religious background of the incidents. “I have no idea why criminals check the name on the mailbox before they rob a house,” said a police spokesman. His subordinates, apparently, are more talkative, albeit they wished to remain anonymous.
Hiding the national background of the crimes, the police leadership of Odense contradicts the actions of the authorities in Denmark. Folketing (parliament) last year voted to restore control at the borders of the country. The main reason is openly talked about: the problem of immigration. Copenhagen fears that a wave of refugees from North Africa will exacerbate the already difficult situation that developed in Scandinavia with immigrants from Asia and Africa.
Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian media recently were filled with reports of street war between the youth of the “white” and immigrant areas in the streets of Copenhagen, Malmo and Oslo. The police claimed that the fights have to do with drug traffickers arguing over the territory. However, few Danes (as well as Swedes and Norwegians) believe this.
Current developments in Odense showed that the problem of the relations between indigenous and immigrant Danish Muslims growing for half a century has fully matured in Denmark. When in the early 1960s the country was in need of unskilled labor, and later showed humanism towards the residents of ‘hot spots’, hardly anyone thought that the immigrants would be so ungrateful with respect to their host country. When today their number has reached 200,000 (out of five million), things took a nasty turn.
However, we cannot say that Muslims are the only ones to blame. The Danish government remained silent about this issue for years and toyed with the Islamists. Former Prime Minister of Denmark and now NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has allowed hosting the “World Chechen Congress” in Copenhagen with militant emissary Akhmed Zakayev as a guest in the days of the tragedy of the “Nord-Ost”. The Danish authorities also sluggishly reacted to the preaching of Islamic nature heard from some houses of worship.
The other side of the coin is the notorious political correctness that at times developed into permissiveness. On September 30, 2005 the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten published cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. Since depicting the prophet is prohibited in Islam, Muslims rebelled. But Fogh Rasmussen refused to apologize even when fervent Islam followers broke into the Danish Embassies and Muslim countries one after another began to curtail the economic and political ties with Denmark.
Had Rasmussen apologized, there may not have been riots in the embassies and repeated attempts to kill the author of the first cartoons Kurt Vestergor. Perhaps the relationship between the native Danes and immigrants from Muslim countries would not have strained to the limit. The government also blessed the immigrants for the idle life on benefits. According to various estimates, up to 40 percent of all benefits in the country are paid to Muslim immigrants.
On the other hand, a significant proportion of Muslims did not abide by the local rules. Denmark legalized such questionable from the standpoint of religion (and not just Islam) things like same sex marriage, abortion, and recreational drugs. The existence of Christiania district in Copenhagen area, known for its particularly frivolous nature, is not to the liking of many Danes either. However, it is up to the Danes to decide how to run their own country. No one likes it when the guest drives the host of the house. The hosts in this case are the Danes, no matter how immoral.
When it comes to outright driving of the Danes out of the city where an object of their national pride was born, things take a very nasty turn. Incompatibility of the two mentalities and ideologies threaten to grow into an open confrontation. The authorities of Denmark are ignoring the issue at their own peril.

Ryan Braun – The Hebrew Hammer (UPDATES)

(JS)...Ryan Braun may be an innocent man" and "may be exonerated."If this happens, obviously it would be tremendous news for the Brewers and Braun, who tested positive for a banned substance in October and appealed the finding before an arbitration panel in New York last week. It also would make it an even bigger atrocity that news of the positive test was leaked to ESPN, which reported it in early December.

Kevin Youkilis has a few championship rings. Ian Kinsler is a former all star and a World Series loser. Danny Valencia is a solid 3rd baseman. And Jason Marquis is… well.. forget I mentioned him.
But the man that gets all the praise today is Ryan Braun aka The Hebrew Hammer. The former Rookie of the Year and current NL MVP finished the 2011 season with 33 home runs (6th in the league) and a .332 batting average (2nd in the league). ...that was till he was accused of juicing....

The arbitration panel, with independent arbitrator Shyam Das expected to cast the decisive vote, has 25 days to render a verdict but it could come as soon as later this week. Some of Patrick's comments: "There were whispers that this was a personal medical issue, that he was taking something for that, that may have spiked his test. I since found out (Sunday) that that is not the case. "Ryan Braun may be exonerated here. He may be found innocent. And judging from all of the information I was told, there's a good chance that he should be."Patrick went on to say that MLB is "cut and dried" about what is allowed to be in a player's system but said what Braun tested positive for "wasn't a masking agent." "The bigger issue here is the testing and was Ryan Braun a victim of the testing by Major League Baseball," added Patrick. "Let's see how this plays out... The feeling I got (Sunday) from somebody involved in the process in this, it's not as cut and dried as people would think. And Ryan Braun may be an innocent man."

(nytimes.com) The New York Times Company reported on Thursday that its fourth-quarter profit declined 12.2 percent as rising subscription and digital advertising revenue at its largest newspapers could not offset the continued drop-off in print advertising.Net income was $58.9 million, or 39 cents a share, compared with $67.1 million, or 44 cents a share, in the period a year earlier.
For the full year, the company reported a net loss of $39.7 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with a profit of $107.7 million, or 71 cents a share, in 2010.
Revenue for the fourth quarter declined 2.8 percent, to $643 million. For the year, revenue at the Times Company was $2.32 billion, down 2.9 percent. Operating profit fell 4.5 percent, to $106.7 million, for the quarter and dropped 75.8 percent, to $56.7 million, for the year.
The results reflected the continuing struggles of print advertising throughout the industry, as marketers and readers continue to migrate online. Across the company, advertising revenue declined 7.1 percent in the fourth quarter. Print advertising was down 7.8 percent and digital advertising declined 4.9 percent, dragged down by a 25.9 percent revenue drop-off at the company’s About.com property.
The results were brighter at the company’s News Media Group, which includes The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The International Herald Tribune. There, digital advertising was up 5.3 percent and circulation revenue was up 4.7 percent in the fourth quarter, reflecting the growth of online subscriptions at The Times.
Still, every main advertising category spent less at the company’s newspapers in the most recent quarter than they did in the period a year earlier, led by real estate classified advertising, which fell 17.3 percent.
In a continued effort to shed its peripheral assets, the Times Company also said Thursday that it had agreed to sell an additional part of its stake in Fenway Sports Group, owner of the Boston Red Sox, for $30 million, pending the approval of Major League Baseball. Last July the company sold more than half its stake to three separate buyers for $117 million.
The $39.7 million loss for 2011 includes a $161.3 million write-down largely from the company’s smaller regional newspapers in Florida, Alabama and elsewhere. The Times Company announced in December that it had agreed to sell its regional newspapers for $143 million to Halifax Media Holdings, but that sale is not reflected in the 2011 figures.
The results come as the Times Company begins its search for a chief executive to succeed Janet L. Robinson, who left the company after seven years in the post after the issue of a leadership change was raised by the company’s chairman, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. Her departure cost the company $4.5 million in a retirement and consulting agreement, or 2 cents a share. Ms. Robinson’s total exit package could reach five times that amount, according to people familiar with her severance package but unauthorized to discuss it publicly.
Last March, the company introduced its digital pay subscription service at NYTimes.com, viewed by many analysts as a risky but potentially crucial factor in the company’s financial future.
In the six months ended Sept. 30, The Times had the second-largest paid subscription Web site among newspapers behind The Wall Street Journal’s 537,469 subscribers, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
“In 2011 we made significant strides in our strategy to transform and rebalance our company,” Mr. Sulzberger, now the acting chief executive, said in a statement. “Our fourth-quarter results demonstrate the continued focus on building The Times’s digital subscription base.”
The company projected high single-digit circulation revenue growth in the first quarter of 2012 driven by a 4 percent price increase on home delivery of The Times and a 50-cent increase on Monday-to-Saturday newsstand sales.
Mr. Sulzberger said the “economic environment remained challenging” but added that the company would continue to look for “new innovative approaches to expand our reach on new devices, in new markets and through social media.”
In a sign of the economic future newspapers will confront, digital advertising in 2011 accounted for a larger chunk of overall advertising revenue — about 27.7 percent compared with 26.3 percent in 2010.
The company reported that it had $280 million cash on hand at the end of the quarter and a total debt of $773.1 million.

French Jewish mother wins custody battle with Saudi prince who kidnapped child

The Paris criminal court ordered Prince Sattam al-Saud from the kingdom’s founding royal family, to hand over custody of his daughter Aya to her French mother, Candice Cohen-Ahnine, and provide child support of €10,000 (£8,300) a month.
For the past three-and-a-half years, the prince has kept Aya in a Riyadh palace despite efforts by the French foreign ministry and President Nicolas Sarkozy's office to resolve the issue.
But the French court ruling appears to have had no effect on the prince. “What do I care of Sarkozy?” he is cited as telling Nouvel Observateur magazine. “If need be, I’ll go like [Osama] bin Laden and hide in the mountains with Aya.”
Miss Cohen-Ahnin, 34, and the prince met in London 14 years ago at Brown’s nightclub and their daughter was born in November 2001.
Their relationship continued until 2006 when he allegedly announced that he was obliged to marry a cousin, but that she could be a second wife. She refused and they separated.
Miss Cohen-Ahnine claimed that her daughter was taken from her during a visit to Saudi Arabia in 2008 and that she was held in the prince’s palace where she had only fleeting meetings with her daughter.
She said she managed to leave when a maid left her door open and she sought refuge in the French embassy.
Miss Cohen-Ahnin was eventually spirited out of the country after the prince allegedly produced a document purporting that she had been Muslim but had converted to Judaism — a crime punishable by death.
She said she was concerned about her daughter’s upbringing when she discovered Facebook photos of her in a niqab and playing with her father’s firearms.
Despairing at the lack of diplomatic progress, she published Give My Daughter Back, a book recounting her ordeal, in October.
Since the court ruling, the prince faces an international arrest warrant for ignoring the custody sentence.

Mitt Romney stands accused of forcing elderly Jews to eat non-Kosher food (Hat Tip: Memeorandum).

(Carl:) It’s a great campaign line for the former speaker, and the addition about George Soros is a nice touch. The problem is, Romney never actually “eliminated serving kosher food” to Jewish residents at state nursing homes, especially not in the way Gingrich describes.
In 2002, cuts in both federal and state subsidies to assisted living facilities, combined with the rising costs of maintaining the facilities, caused a couple of Massachusetts nursing homes to consider closing their kosher kitchens. It was an unfortunate decision, but there was never actually a concern that kosher residents would be forced to eat non-kosher food – the facilities were weighing several options, including busing in the food from other nursing homes or hiring catering services. The Jewish Advocate reported in January 2003:

[Nursing home owner Genesis ElderCare] decided in November to discontinue operating the Coolidge House’s kosher kitchen due to rising costs and decreased state and federal reimbursements. Management said although the kitchen would close, Coolidge House would continue to provide kosher meals either by serving pre-packaged food, contracting with a caterer to prepare and deliver meals, or bringing food over from the Heritage House, GEC’s nursing home at Cleveland Circle. Coolidge House officials say the kitchen will remain open at least through Passover, which starts in mid-April.
The issue was the nursing home had to maintain the kosher kitchen for everyone living there, even though reportedly just a small percentage of its residents actually kept kosher:

For administrators at the Coolidge House, it comes down to the math: Only 30 percent of the 200 residents are Jewish, they say, and only 8 percent now keep kosher. By preparing meat and dairy foods in the same kitchen, administrators say, they would save about $200,000, or 14 percent of annual dining costs.
“We understand the community’s sensitivities, but this is what we have to do to stay in business,” said Larry Lencz, executive director of Coolidge House. “The bottom line comes down to simple economics and changing demographics.”
Some Jewish community groups opposed the plans to bus in food, and instead requested additional state government funding in 2003 to help the kitchens operate. At the time, Massachusetts was struggling with a budget crisis, and Romney was trying to rein in costs by blocking additional spending. The kosher food bill that he vetoed would have provided an additional $600,000 in funding to nursing homes. Whether you believe he was right or wrong to veto it, this was clearly a position that made Romney appear insensitive to the elderly and Jewish communities.
In the end, the veto was overridden by the Massachusetts state legislature, and the facilities kept their kosher kitchens after all. But Romney’s decision was not, as Gingrich claims, a choice to “eliminate kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare.”
(Carl:) Well, isn't this fascinating.... Unfortunately, the availability of Kosher food at nursing homes in Massachusetts is an issue about which I know too much, as some of you know from private conversations.
Coolidge House is a facility in the heart of the Jewish community in Brookline, which used to be Kosher and used to be owned by an Orthodox Jew whom I have known for over 50 years. My grandmother spent time there before she passed away in 1990, and both my parents were there in January 2003 when the incident Alana describes happened (Dad broke his hip; Mom could not be on her own by then). The last time I saw Mom conscious was in Coolidge House in 2004. She passed away in 2005; by the time I got there she was in a coma.
What's more interesting is that sometime in 2007 or 2008, Coolidge House not only went non-Kosher but banned Kosher patients from bringing in their own Kosher food. Not only is Coolidge House no longer Kosher, and not only do they not supply Kosher food for people who want it, you cannot bring your own food there. I was in Boston when this policy was announced and the rabbis in the community were horrified.
My Dad lived in an assisted living facility (not Coolidge House) in the center of the Jewish community in Boston from 2008 to 2010. That facility was Kosher when he got there, but six months before they decided they could no longer care for him (justifiably, by the way - he had physically declined too much to belong in assisted living), that place announced one night that it as going non-Kosher but would bring in Kosher food for those who wanted it (I won't get into all the technicalities of why, but I would not eat there anymore even if they gave me a Kosher meal, but I do go back to visit people there when I am in Boston so I do know what's going on). They gave six months of lead time for those who wanted to leave - how many of these people are capable of leaving?
When Dad left there, he went to a place that was not Kosher, and a month and a half later, I came in and arranged for Kosher food to be brought in privately. By then, Dad was becoming less aware (he has Alzheimers), and may not have realized what he was being fed. Today, he is in a Kosher facility and has been for nearly a year now.
Here's the key: In Massachusetts, you have no right to Kosher food (even today). In New York, for example, you have a right to Kosher food even if you're not in a Kosher facility. If what Romney vetoed (and it's not clear to me from the article) was a bill that would have granted a right to Kosher food, that's despicable. There are hundreds of elderly Jews in Massachusetts who are in Medicaid facilities (which means you had to spend them down to get them in) who cannot get Kosher food. That's just plain wrong. If, on the other hand, what he did was to allow facilities to close their Kosher kitchens, but still obligate them to supply Kosher food to those who wanted it, that's nowhere near as objectionable (although it's still not good).

I'm more pissed off about what he said concerning Jonathan Pollard and the mere mention of the fake 1967 borders.

(EOZ) Palestine Press Agency reports that the divorce rate in Gaza has been increasing, reaching 17% last year.
The reason?

[Experts] attribute the high divorce rate among Palestinian youth to unemployment, which increased as a result of the split between Fatah and Hamas, as well as the Israeli blockade which is still deeply hurting parts of Palestinian society, including married life which now lack the minimum requirements needed.
Yet the divorced people interviewed in the article give lots of reasons - none of which these analysts choose to mention.
One man divorced his wife because she liked to go out without his permission. Another did because of "extreme stubbornness and suspicious actions."
One woman said "I wish to live a life like I see in Turkish TV, where they are people who are civilized and respect the women and their privacy, and you cannot find this in Gaza, where the orders of her husband are a sword hanging over the neck of his wife."
Now, if you blame the higher divorce rate on Israel, who can you blame for a low divorce rate?
In fact, Palestinian Arabs used to brag that their divorce rate is the lowest in the Arab world.
In the first two years of the intifada, the divorce rate in the territories plummeted as much as 70% in Nablus - because, according to this book, men couldn't afford the expense of a new bride.
So poverty causes divorces, and it also causes a reduction in divorces - and either way, Israel is at fault!
Incidentally, recent divorce rates are 20% in Saudi Arabia, 24% in Bahrain, 25.6% in the UAE, 34.8% in Qatar and 37.1% in Kuwait.
I'm sure that Israel is to blame somehow for that as well.

According to an AFP tally, 45 US missile strikes were reported in Pakistan's tribal belt in 2009, 101 in 2010 and 64 in 2011.
The New America Foundation think tank in Washington says drone strikes in Pakistan have killed between 1,715 and 2,680 people in the past eight years.
Human rights campaigners have expressed deep concern over increased use of drone strikes. The State Department also confirmed it used surveillance drones to protect US diplomats in so-called "critical threat environments" overseas.
The United States had until now refused to discuss the strikes publicly, but the program has dramatically increased as the Obama administration looks to withdraw all foreign combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Two pieces of bad news were released earlier this week that put a dent into the argument that global warming was "settled science."Actually, allow me to put it a different way. Two studies were released that corroborate the statement that climate change is a hoax.
One study reports that the earth hasn't gotten warmer for the past 15 years, the other indicates that the future might bring a bit of a cold spell. What makes these studies even more impressive is they both come from proponents of the global warming hoax.
The first piece of bad news comes from the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (the folks who gave us climategate)--based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations it confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.

A NASA study reports the sun is now heading towards a "low cycle" of output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food.

Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots seen at their peak.
We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call ‘Cycle 24’ – which is why last week’s solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th Century.
Analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona – derived from magnetic-field measurements 120,000 miles beneath the sun’s surface – suggest that Cycle 25, whose peak is due in 2022, will be a great deal weaker still.

According to a paper issued last week by the Met Office, there is a 92 per cent chance that both Cycle 25 and those taking place in the following decades will be as weak as, or weaker than, the ‘Dalton minimum’ of 1790 to 1830. In this period, named after the meteorologist John Dalton, average temperatures in parts of Europe fell by 2C.
However, it is also possible that the new solar energy slump could be as deep as the ‘Maunder minimum’ (after astronomer Edward Maunder), between 1645 and 1715 in the coldest part of the ‘Little Ice Age’ when, as well as the Thames frost fairs, the canals of Holland froze solid.

Of course the Global warming moonbats are having a cow, but the bottom line is, the longer it takes for it to get warmer, the bigger the gap between the computer models and reality. As the gap continues to widen the entire global warming house of cards will collapse.

Dr Nicola Scafetta, of Duke University in North Carolina, is the author of several papers that argue the Met Office climate models show there should have been ‘steady warming from 2000 until now’.
‘If temperatures continue to stay flat or start to cool again, the divergence between the models and recorded data will eventually become so great that the whole scientific community will question the current theories,’ he said.
He believes that as the Met Office model attaches much greater significance to CO2 than to the sun, it was bound to conclude that there would not be cooling. ‘The real issue is whether the model itself is accurate,’ Dr Scafetta said. Meanwhile, one of America’s most eminent climate experts, Professor Judith Curry of the Georgia Institute of Technology, said she found the Met Office’s confident prediction of a ‘negligible’ impact difficult to understand.
‘The responsible thing to do would be to accept the fact that the models may have severe shortcomings when it comes to the influence of the sun,’ said Professor Curry. As for the warming pause, she said that many scientists ‘are not surprised’.
She argued it is becoming evident that factors other than CO2 play an important role in rising or falling warmth, such as the 60-year water temperature cycles in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
‘They have insufficiently been appreciated in terms of global climate,’ said Prof Curry. When both oceans were cold in the past, such as from 1940 to 1970, the climate cooled. The Pacific cycle ‘flipped’ back from warm to cold mode in 2008 and the Atlantic is also thought likely to flip in the next few years .
Pal Brekke, senior adviser at the Norwegian Space Centre, said some scientists found the importance of water cycles difficult to accept, because doing so means admitting that the oceans – not CO2 – caused much of the global warming between 1970 and 1997.
The same goes for the impact of the sun – which was highly active for much of the 20th Century.
‘Nature is about to carry out a very interesting experiment,’ he said. ‘Ten or 15 years from now, we will be able to determine much better whether the warming of the late 20th Century really was caused by man-made CO2, or by natural variability.’
Meanwhile, since the end of last year, world temperatures have fallen by more than half a degree, as the cold ‘La Nina’ effect has re-emerged in the South Pacific.
‘We’re now well into the second decade of the pause,’ said Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation. ‘If we don’t see convincing evidence of global warming by 2015, it will start to become clear whether the models are bunk. And, if they are, the implications for some scientists could be very serious.’
Unfortunately in those three years, plenty of unnecessary damage can be done to the economy of the world and the United States by proponents of the hoax.

The officer, speaking on a condition of anonymity, reported that the passports of some nine high-profile Iraqi politicians were clearly marked with Ben-Gurion Airport stamps as well.
According to the source, the politicians made their first trips to Israel after the Iraqi elections, held on January 2010, until around October that same year. The officer claimed that during questioning of the Iraqis, it was discovered that they were operating as envoys to Israel on behalf of Iraqi politicians.
In response to the report, Iraqi Parliament Member from the National Iraqi Alliance Mohammad Redha al-Khafaji declared that some 50 parliament members have already put their John Hancock to a bill proposing to ban such trips to Israel. Khafaji emphasized that in the past, Iraqi senior officials had visited Israel secretly.
Meanwhile, a member of the parliament's judicial committee said these signatures do not necessarily mean that such a law should be passed.
Forbidding a citizen from traveling is against the Iraqis' right to freedom, as written in the constitution. However banning travel to Israel has nothing to do with politics, she told Al Jazeera, explaining that Iraq has never had any diplomatic or political relations with Israel, nor has it acknowledged the State of Israel.
The West suffers from two delusions. One is that having elections means you have a democracy. And the other is that if an Arab or Muslim country has a democracy, it will no longer seek to destroy Israel.
They forget that after World War II, the allied powers occupied Japan and Germany for a number of years to root out the toxic effects of Nazism and fascism, before turning those countries over to their own citizens who were ready to behave in a democratic way. Neither of those occupations had any time limit, but when it was time to end them, the allies (at least on the Western side of the Berlin Wall and in Japan) ended them.
Of course, to be able to do that without turning your troops into target practice dummies you first have to utterly defeat the other side militarily to the point of surrender. Has any country surrendered to a Western power since Japan? Not that I can recall.

Why not ban travel to Israel? Countries that are hip to the club scene like Dubai and Qatar already do. If I wanted to go back to the college I graduated from I couldn't take some classes because they are in Qatar. Why should Iraq be any different from any of the Arab nations that our media approves as exotic. Why would we be shocked? Try asking @Chevron on twitter if an Israeli is allowed to work for their energy company.... and meanwhile Nelson Mandela is calling Israel Apartheid. It all works in a certain consistent logic.

Already an old story, but being the sick guy that I am... I'm going to post it, because it amused me! ...and I'm a horrible mean spirited shallow person. Echo Valley was not wearing a seatbelt, thus she was ejected from her car as a result of the collision. She died at the scene. According to a friend, she did not wear seatbelts while driving because of her large breasts. The irony is she died by being rear ended. She was married to James C. Stone, the former president of Alpha Health Services in Post Falls, Idaho. Stone was sentenced to a three-year term in prison and ordered to pay $170,000 in restitution in 2007 for stealing money from his employees’ pension plan. Believe it or not she was 57 years old when she died.
