Most of the readers would be thinking, what is this paanpoyi. Paanpoyi is a word used in Shri Sai SatCharitra for the life story of Shirdi Sai Baba written in Shri Sai SatCharitra. It says, "This life story of Sai is, to the devotee, is a paanpoyi of His nectar-sweet stories. With Sai's grace, drink deeply and to your heart's content, to ward off the scorching heat of this conflagration that worldly life is.

Indeed this is so true. First the meaning of paanpoyi. Paanpoyi is a Marathi word which means " The stand or a shed erected for the purpose of supplying water to the travelers. This kind of sheds were and are used widely in India with the purpose of quenching the thirst of travelers traveling on feet. There are many devotees who visit Temples or a shrine or a pilgrimage on foot. It is heavy on the physical system, and the most required thing during that time is drinking water.

Truely Sai Satcharitra is a paanpoyi. Not a paanpoyi of drinking water but a paanpoyi of Sai Baba's love and grace. It is a shed where the devotee gets to rest in Baba's love. It is a place from where Sai Baba's grace flows constantly, the devotees just have to read the sacred stories of Sai with attention and putting aside all reservation.

The worldly life has it's own set of struggle, agony, striving. The mind and the soul sometimes get too tired in the scorching heat. The sacred stories of Shri Sai SatCharitra does give solace at these times. There are so many incidents recorded of the same.

Those looking for spiritual or worldly contentment. Shri Sai Satcharitra is a source of divine grace. Dig for the wealth and carry it away by cart-loads. Yes a little digging (reading) is needed. Even if one is neat a well full with fresh ever flowing water, one need to do little and actually drink the water. One needs to drink that deep quenching grace. We are always in need of something. Something for fulfillment. We look for money, good relationships, good health. Even with all these the need of fulfillment still remains. What is this something which we are looking for? Many get the money they need, the relationships they had always dreamed for. Yet not the money nor the relationship bring about the total quench. Many just settles with life is this set of unfulfilled struggle and does not look for something that could possibly quench or bring about a fulfillment. Many just keep looking for more material wealth and more relationships. As these are also a goal for fulfillment Sai Baba grants these wishes to devotees. Sai Baba used to say, "I give them what they ask for, until they ask for what I want to give." Lucky ones finds soon that all they have been asking for is not enough. Even after attaining all they asked for something within is still empty. It needs to be filled. Then they ask for the God's or Guru's grace. To get merged in the God's grace, to experience the fullness of God's or Guru's grace within and without.

The paanpoyi is mentioned in Sai SatCharitra Chapter 25. Next is a sacred stories of Sai Baba, which tells why Sai Baba does not fulfill all desires of devotees? Which we will see in following post.

Was just reading Sai SatCharitra. Sai Satcharitra seems to have a great deal of importance in my life. The grace that flows through Shri Sai SatCharitra is immense. Sai Baba's grace is present too much with this sacred pothi. One reason for the immense popularity of Sai SatCharitra parayan with so many Sai Baba devotees, whether they are aware of it or not.

My first experience with this sacred book Shri Sai SatCharitra has already been written in my first experiences with Shridi Sai Baba. That was an experience with which Sai Baba made his grace felt through this sacred book for the first time to me. Since then Sai SatCharitra has been a constant companion with me. I have been holding and carrying the book with me since so many years. Talking mentally with the book. Even sleeping with the book. The book lies near my pillow and i sleep with my hand on it. Going to sleep while feeling Sai Baba's grace is really a fortunate experience.

More the parayans are done, stronger the bond becomes. The force of grace gets stronger and stronger on this spiritual weakling. Since last Navratris to this Navratri, had completed two sets of 20 parayans each. The first 20 Sai SatCharitra were driven by fear. This is one of the chief specialty of our Sadguru Sai Baba. If you cannot love God enough, if you cannot spend enough time in love with God. Come to Me and ask for some security, ask for freedom from agony, ask for material or emotional comfort. I will give you that, so that I can give what is best for you. The love for God.

As i mentioned earlier, i used to carry Sai SatCharitra most of the time. Even while at work. It felt i was holding hand of Baba all the time. One thing i asked from the grace of the book always was freedom from work for monetary gains or survival. This was done at the times of satisfactory monetary gains or loses. I want to spend most of the time time feeling your grace in silence was the call of heart and mind. This prayer was listened to and granted. Since three to four years i can spend most of the time with Baba's grace, either meditating, worship, Sai SatCharitra parayan, aarti. Thank you Baba for the same.

Now may be i was not giving enough time to the parayan of Sai SatCharitra. So the necessary money that was flowing in every month reduced much. The reduction of the money meant to give the mind on any other work for the quest of survival. This brought about great disturbance. On doing some research on the work that gave me enough money, i found that there was no way it can be brought back. Immediately the mind went where it goes at the times of troubles, Sai Baba. It said, Baba looks like i am doomed. Will be forced for the quest of survival. Will have to leave the maximum time devotion to You, the surrender to Your grace. Baba if the money income gets as before i'll do 20 Sai SatCharitra parayans.

The mind and heart was still at awe. Next morning my hands clicked on computer screen to see if the impossible has been done. What have You in store for me Baba. Continue with this luxurious Bhakti or run around in the market place. i could not believe what my eyes saw. Everything had been restored as before. Well, not as it was before, in fact in far better position.

So Sai Baba You did your job, now the ball was in my court. I had to do what i promised. That's how first 20 parayans were done. And with each parayan You made your presence felt all the time. I bow 1001 times to Your love.

Was reading a very good book Sai Baba the Master by Acharya E. Bharadwaja. Readers can read online this good book on Sai Baba here. In the book was reading experiences of Kusha bhav . Sai Baba one one occasion advised him to complete 108 Guru Charitra parayans, each parayan to be completed in 3 days. This particular advice was a great attraction to me. So after praying for successful completion of 108 parayans of Sai SatCharita (each one in three days) have started it on 15th September 2009. So far three prarayans have been completed and the 4th one is on.

With each parayan the force of Sai Baba's grace is getting stronger. Was just thinking about the gold of Sai Baba. Sai Baba many a times refered to God's grace as moeny or gold. It was a symbol He used for God's grace and Fakir was symbol use for God. Quiet a miss match if we see it completely in material sense. A true Fakir does not even accumulate little material money with him, gold is to far a thing he would keep.

So was thinking of the gold that flows through Sai SatCharitra and reached at the end of Chapter 32 where Sai Baba said about His gold. Normally i do Sai SatCharitra parayans of the abridged version available at Sai Baba Sansthan Shirdi, which we also distribute for free. But while writing on this blog i also use verse by verse translation in English of original Marathi Sai SatCharitra. The English translation done by Indira Kher.

On opening the book randomly what i read is "My Master says, Take, O take away!". Exactly what my heart felt like writing on this blog. A small miracle in itself. Or Baba's presence with this post and the blog, as it is with Sai SatCharitra.

Before what Sai Baba said about the the gold (God or Guru's grace) there is a mysterious symbolic story which Sai Baba said.

Once when I was small, stinting on my own needs, I set out in search of job for my livelihood. As i walked along I came to Beedgaon, where i rested for a while. But my Fakir had a different plan for me, which brought me great happiness. There i secured a job of doing Jariwork. I worked untiringly and my work came to fruition. Such is the power of the Fakir!

There where four other boys, employed before me and much acclaimed for the their skills. They too were working there, and there work was assessed on completion. One had put in work worth Rs. 50/- ; another worth Rs. 100/- and the third one, worth Rs. 150/-. But my work was worth double their amount.

Seeing my skill, my employer was very pleased, and being fond of me, praised me highly. He presented me with a dress, consisting of a turban over the head and a 'shela', to take over the body. But the moment it was given, I just tied it in a bundle and put it away. How can that suffice which somebody gives you? However much it is, it is inadequate. But when God gives something, it has no end, even to end of time.

"What my master gives me is real 'giving'. How can someone else's compare with it, ever? How can the 'limited' lend distinction to the 'boundless'?

"My Master says, 'Take O take this away!' Everyone says, 'Give give only to me!' But no one heeds my words. No one listens to me attentively!

"His treasury is overflowing but no one cares to bring the carts. Nobody will dig, when asked to do so. No one bothers to make the effort.

" I say, 'Dig for that wealth and carry it away by the cart-loads. Only he will collect the treasure, who is truly mother's son.'

"And what, after all, is our fate? Dust will return to the dust, and the wind, to the wind. And this opportunity, once lost, will never come back again!

"However, the skill of my Fakir, the leela of my bhagavan, the harmonious consistency of my Master is something quite different, quite unique!

The above symbolic and story told by Sai Baba, like many other pointed to the real wealth, God's grace. But one has to listen attentively to what Baba says and work for the real gold. Fill one's cart with the real gold which is not limited. What God's grace gives none can give. How can the gifts from someone limited can be compared to limitless. We are always in serach for the gifts from fellow human beings, looking for love, emotions, things. Even if we get it, it is always inadequate.It can not be compared with the love of God, the grace of God, which has no end.

"When others are present, we keep off the children" , were the words spoken by Sadguru Sai Baba of Shirdi.

Experiences of a spiritual aspirant Chinna Kistan.

Strange and inconceivable are ways of spiritual Masters and more so of Shirdi Sai Baba. This words were spoken to a spiritual aspirant named Chinna Kistna. Chinna Kistna had a keen interest and attraction towards spirituality right from his younger days, when most teens of his age are more interested in games and other social competitions.

He used to sit and meditate on his chosen deity, Lord Vishnu, for long hours. Sitting in one asana (one of the many physical postures, shown in the yoga for better and easy meditation on divine). This went on for years. When he was in his twenty first year (about 1910), he had three successive dream visions in one night. The dream visions had a deep spiritual significance. These visions were there to guide him to his Spiritual guru, Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi.

The three spiritual (out of body) dream visions

In the first dream vision he experienced that he was getting separated from his physical body, and before him was a divine form of lord Vishnu .

The second dream vision was the same in nature. The difference was that, this time there was a stranger standing besides the form of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu pointing towards the stranger said, "This Sai Baba of Shirdi is your man, you must resort to Him."

Then there was a third dream vision. This time too he experienced he was moving out of his physical body. He was then drifted in air to some distant village he had never seen. He happened to see someone and inquired whether the village's name was Shirdi. The reply was in affirmation.

So he put another question whether a holy man named Sai Baba lived there in Shirdi. This time the answer did not came in words. He was led to a mosque. In the mosque Sai Baba was sat, with his hands leaning on the wooden rail and his legs stretched out in front.

Sai Baba looked on him and got up. Sai Baba said, "Do you take my darshan? I am your debtor. I must take your darshan." saying so, Sai Baba reverently put his head on Chinna Kistna's feet. The dream vision ended here.

Here, i feel it should be noted that there many devotees who had not seen Sai Baba or seen Sai Baba's picture, when Sai Baba had appeared in their dreams. Later on when they either saw Sai Baba's picture or met him in Shirdi, they realized it was this holy man who appeared in their dream.

Chinna Kistna had seen Sai Baba's picture before. But he was unaware of the most characteristic style of sitting in Masjid or Dwarkamai. This he saw in his dream vision.

Verification of Dream vision

Chinna Kistna was soon on his way to Shirdi. The dream vision had an impact and he wanted to verify the dream. Was Sai Baba his spiritual Guru?, as the dream indicated, was the question he took within his mind.

When he saw Sai Baba, he was not convinced and thought, should i worship a man?

On the other hand Sai Baba far from welcoming him, with blunt and abrupt refusal, said what was going on in his mind, "What, do you worship a man?"

Sai Baba used this refusal in the beginning with many other devotees like Megha who were close to Him and remained close and devoted to Him. On the other hand many devotees like Kakasaheb Dixit and Nanasaheb Chandorkar were welcomed from the beginning. This again raise the question Can we understand Sai Baba's activities?

This made Chinna Kistna much dissatisfied. Here he was in Shirdi, as guided by his deity in dream vision, on whom he meditated for years. He had vision of Shirdi and Baba sitting in Dwarkamai. In heart he had this desire of a warm welcome from the holy man of Shirdi. Nothing happened according to what he desired.

In the afternoon after the afternoon gathering (Darbar) in Dwarkamai, after everybody left the Dwarkamai, Sai Baba preferred solitude. None would enter Masjid mai or Dwarkamai in those afternoon hours. Few who tried were welcomed with abuses and even beating from Sai Baba. Some how Chinna Kistna was drawn towards Dwarkamai at these particular hours.

As he approached the holy mother Dwarkamai Sai Baba signaled him a welcome. The anger he showed on this action at this particular time was not there.

Kistna Chinna approached Sai Baba and bowed to Him in reverence. Sai Baba hugged him with love (Bolo Sainath Maharaj Ki Jai) and said, " You are my child, When others are present we keep off the children.

Time change for Kakad Aarti in Shirdi on Solar Eclipse day

Solar Eclipse on 22nd July, 2009 is the longest eclipse of this century. Normally All the temples remain closed during this time. Even in the temples in home the lamps (oil or ghee) are put off during the time period when the eclipse occur. Devotees in the temple do Nama Japa or just meditate in the Mandirs or temples. After the eclipse time is over bathing of the God or Guru is done and after worship the doors of temples are opened.

Parayan of Sai SatCharitra or any other spiritual text, chanting of God or Guru's name or mantra or meditation on Guru are the best activities devotees can do during the time period. After the eclipse is over devotees can take a bath. Give the idols or picture of Guru or Gods bath and light, do worship and light the lamps again. Charity to poor and needy people and feeding the hungry animals should be done after the eclipse.

Since the time of this solar eclipse is early morning in India, the morning Kakad Aarti will start at 4.30 am followed by regular Holy Bath of Shri Sai Baba. Small aarti ‘Shirdi Maze Pandharpur’ will be between 5.35 am and 5.40 am. The temple in Shirdi will remain closed from 5.45 am and pooja and chanting by the priests will be done until 7.20 a.m. Again a holy bath to Shri Sai Baba will be given at 7.25 a.m which will be followed by small aarti of Sai Baba Shirdi Maze Pandharpur. So those devotees who want to spend their time in the spiritual vibrant Samadhi Temple of Sai Baba in Shirdi along with the Sai Baba puja and chanting, during the eclipse time should attend the small aarti Shirdi Maze Phandharpur, which will start at 5.35 and remain inside the Samadhi Temple till 7.30 a.m. Two full hours in Samadhi Temple, a spiritual treat.

Guru Poornima

Guru poornima is a major festival celebrated in the sacred land Shirdi. The other two festivals that are celebrated in the divinely vibrant Shirdi are Ramanavami and Dassera. This year 2009 the Guru poornima is on date 7th July, 2009. Also Lunar eclipse will happen on this day, which will not be visible in India or in Shirdi.

Dasera is an auspicious day celebrated by Hindus. The reason of celebration of Dassera, in the abode of Sai Baba's physical presence (Shirdi) is because Sai Baba left the physical body on that day (Mahasamadhi). It was indeed a very sad and shocking day for all the Sai Baba devotees who loved and worshiped Sai Baba. For them the loss seemed to be immense. As Sai Baba was not, a Saint or God for them who had tremendous miraculous powers which helped many devotees in times of distress. Sai Baba of Shirdi was not just a spiritual Guru who helped them and guided them to spirituality and also in temporal matters. With all of above Sai Baba was a very gentle and loving form. Who talked with the devotees and joked with them. He told stories and parables.

Sai Baba's Love and care for His devotees

He played with the children. Sai Baba was also like a family member to them, a family member that was love incarnate. Just a glance on Sai Baba would make them feel calm serene and lovingly taken care of. They were sure that Sai Baba's tremendous love was with them. They need not fear as Sai Baba was there to stop them from doing any wrong which could hurt them. Sai Baba was there to save them from the most difficult situations they might be facing or that might be on the way in near future.

A family member who always took care of them and saved them from many calamities, even when they were far away from His physical presance. Many such experieances later were jotted down as miracles of Sai Baba.They were not miracles in the true sense. They were the love and care for the devotees. The miracles happened not for the sake of miracles but out of love and care for the devotees. The miracles that happened were there, to let the devotees know that He was with them where ever they were and His graceful and loving Nazar was always with them. To let them know that He was not confined with physical limitations as most of us humans are. Just as we humans use the subtle waves, that modern technology has discovered,to stay in touch with our friedns and families through gadgets like mobile phones, internet, and to stay in touch with events through satelite telivison channels. Sai Baba remained and remains in touch with His devotees through His divine powers taking care in every possible way.

Significance of Guru Poornima

According to both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, Guru Puja Day or Guru Poornima Day is celebrated on the Full Moon day of the Lunar month Ashadha, which corresponds to June-July of the Roman Calendar. Many Hindu festivals or based on the Lunar calendar. The size of the moon has tremendous effects on our body and minds. Our bodies contains about 75% of water by weight. Moon affects the water of ocean we can see that in the tidal changes that takes place according to the size of moon. So full moon of Gurupurnima day is very special for Guru puja (worship) of Spiritual Guru or being available to Guru's grace.

Aum Sai Ram,

There are many questions regarding the reading or Parayan of Shri Sai SatCharitra. First let us take a look at What is Parayanam and why Sai SatCharitra Parayan?

Parayan is reading of a sacred or holy book in a set number of days. Mostly Sapthah (completing the reading of book in a week) is done. More or less period of time can also be devoted.

Normally books are source of information. When ever we need any information, books has been and is a very reliable source. Though today another alternative internet is also used much for gathering or obtaining information. Websites and blogs are also in the list to obtain any information we need.

There are certain sacred books or holy books which have a totally different quality. These holy or sacred books are not just information providing books. These books have a quality of grace in them. You might read two post already on this subject about Sai SatCharitra and Gospel of Ramakrishna on this blog for the same. These sacred books awakens the spiritual consciousness within us or what is called chaitanya shakti in Sanskrit or Hindi. That is the reason this books have to reread again and again. If we talk about Sai SatCharitra. Every time we read the book is like spending time with Sai Baba or Sai Baba's divine love and grace. So let's keep this in mind and make it a love affair or devotional affair with Sai Baba, rather than getting the sense of heaviness or duty. Words are like heaviness and duty are purposely used as lot of devotees gets themselves burdened for parayan of Sai SatCharitra. It's ironic to make this topic a burden while it is there for removing the burden.

Mostly Sai SatCharitra parayan is done to get free from troubles. Once we have taken this human body, problems, troubles and trials are inevitable. Even Sai Baba, went thorugh troubles and goes through troubles, who is well known for removing troubles and burdens. So mostly when people find themselves in some sort of problem or trouble, when some kind of insecurity gets hold on to them. They read Sai SatCharitra or some devotee recommends the parayan of Shri SaiSatCharitra to get free. So many devotees has found that this remedy works. Just give your problems to Sai Baba and to the parayan of Sai SatCharitra. Suppose some problem is getting on your head and heart. It troubles a lot. Just start a parayan of Shri Sai SatCharitra, surrender your problem to Sai Baba (Do follow this link on left side). Just give your problem to Sai Bab or divine ,and don't suggest a solution from your side. Sai Baba or divine grace knows more about the problem and it's solution. Our solution may not be the right one. So leave it to the divine intelligence rather than using our own limited intelligence, which is in trouble any way. And how can a troubled mind have a right answer or solution to a problem?

Now it is a common fact that we human do not like to go through agony, insecurities, disturbances. So in adverse condition, to seek the freedom from all of the above things we seek refuge in Sai SatCharitra parayan.

Should we forget the parayan of sacred book or holy book, once we are free form the problem? As stated above Sai SatCharitra is one of the few rare books on earth that has the quality of divine grace. When read again and again it gives new meanings of life and devotion. Our spiritual understanding reveals itself when read again and again.

While we read this book certain words and messages penetrate our mind and heart. That particular message is what we need most at this stage. Many devotees unaware of the quality of the sacred book and getting overwhelmed by the needed message underline those messages. This is a mistake. We are in procces of evolution of understanding. So do not underline sacred or holy books. After a year there will be new messages which you don't notice now, but will have much significance at that time. So leave the book as it is, the divine grace underlines the needed message at different times and different points of life.

So it should be done on regular basis. Even reading of Sai SatCharitra's one chapter a day (parayan in 51 days) should at least be done. As we read it, the love towards the book increases. Then the grace from the book itself acts as a magnet and we read it and enjoy the company of the book.

Also when everything seems to right in our life. There is joy and festivity. In this time we should read the Sai SatCharitra and share and surrender our joys to Baba's grace. We should seek freedom from these enjoyments as we seek freedom from the pains. Because the divine joy is beyond both the worldly joy, joy of senses and worldly pain, pain of senses and mind. And seek for the divine Bliss.

I have been getting many mails asking questions about Sai SatCharitra parayan.

Few of them are stated below

please tell me the correct procedure of doing parayans and after its completion can we start again if yes then how much time duration required for next start?

Do we need to fast during the Sai SatCharitra parayan?

Can I read Sai SatCharitra in office ?

Should Sai SatCharitra parayan be done in temple or in front of Sai Baba's image or picture?

Which are the auspicious days and or times we should read Sai SatCharitra?

For procedure of Sai satcharitra first reading about Sai SatCharitra and ways of worshiping Sai Baba will be of much help.

Basically there is no super highway or one correct procedure for the prayan of Sai SatCharitra. If we consider it as time spent with Sai Baba and we are reading it for the divine love. Divine love does not have any procedure. Do a mother asks a procedure to love her child? Do a lover asks a procedure for spending the time with beloved? No love itself guides. So let the love guide.

Below however are some points that may be helpful in beginning, as love develops those things might fall away on their own.

1. Since the book is sacred and should be considered as Sai Baba himself. We can worship Baba and the book (Sai SatCharitra) before starting the parayan. Light the oil lamps and aggarbatti (incense stick) Ask for the divine love and grace to remove the obstacles.

2. Reading the book at the place of worship. In the temple. In Shirdi prayan hall, is better as the divine vibrations in that places gives additional force. But these opportunities have to grabbed when we have them. Otherwise reading the book wherever we are also has great significance.

3. Fasting during the parayan. In Sai SatCharitra Sai Baba himself never suggested to fast(remaining hungry or eating specific food like fruits and faral) . If the hunger of stomach is knocking on the doors of mind, how can we put our awareness on divine energy. The Sanskrit word for fast is upvaas. If we look for the meaning or explanation of upvaas, it consists of two words. Up (pronounced oop) meaning near and vaas meaning staying or residing. So when one is near God or divine or one stays near the God or divine grace, it means upvaas. So reading of Sai SatCharitra itself is upvaas. When one is in deep love or even deep pain (eg when some close relative or loved one dies) there is no apptitude for food. One does not feel like eating. So if we are looking for upvaas or fasting let it be through deep love. Let us pray for the divine love so deep that thought for eating food does not come to our mind for long periods of time. In chapter 32 of Shri Sai SatCharitra Sai Baba himself describes this state.

"All my sense-organs, including the mind, had left their places and and come to stay in my eyes alone, for the purpose of meditating on Guru."

"When thus meditating on the form of Guru, the working of the intellect ceases. Therefore ultimately, only make an obeisance to Him, observing speechless silence."

So this is the state of upvaas. Not just the hunger but all sense-organs with the help of grace leave their places. Even the most subtle sense organ the mind is stunned and ceases to the bliss of divine presence. It is a state that can never be described. We have to reach that state of speechless silence. And prayans of Sai SatCharitra and asking for Sai Baba's grace for that Sat Chit Anand will certainly help.

About remaining hungry and not real upvaas in the same chapter 34 of Shri Sai SatCharitra it says.

" If the bodily organs do not receive morsels of food they become enfeebled and forget to function efficiently."

"Unless the hunger is appeased with food, how can the eyes find God? How can the tongue sing His praises? And the ears hear them?"

" In Short, only when all the bodily organs have the strength can God be worshiped properly. But when they become emaciated for the want of food, they cannot progress towards the spiritual goal."

And soon a warning follows

" But eating in excess is not beneficial, either.Eating in moderation is what benefits truly. Fasting immoderately always brings on great sufferings."

There are certain days on which the spiritual activities gets a great wind. So auspicious days suggested in Hinuism like RamNavmi, Gurupoornima, Dassera, Shivratri and such should be spent in as much reading as we can. Also early morning hours (sunrise time) and evening (sunset time) are more ideal. But that does not mean we should wait for these days and times. Like a true lover anytime is best to be with the beloved.

After the parayan is complete Aarti of Sai Baba is done. The prasad is distributed. Many a times poor and hungry or hungry animals are fed which so dear to Sai Baba.

Since last few days a post on ways of worshiping Shirdi Sai Baba was knocking on the doors of the mind. Last post of Miracles of Sai Baba , it was mentioned about Sai Baba appearing in the dreams of devoted hearted people and guide them.

Today i received a mail from a Buddhist devotee from Sri Lanka. Below you can read the wonderful experience of the devotee in whose dream Sai Baba appeared.

Hi,

I am a 36year old male from Sri Lanka. I am a Buddhist. Couple of days back In my dreams I was worshiping a temple covered by huge trees by the ocean. There were my wife and few other friends. When I came closer to the temple I saw a statute covered with white material. So I lifted the material to see what is in side, then I saw Sai baba's statute in it ( Only couple of days after I realized it was Sri Sai baba coz I knew very little about him) so I was worshiping him with my wife while looking straight in to the eyes of the statue. In seconds, eyes of the statue opened and smiled at me, after that the statute got down to the floor and wanted me and my wife to follow him out of the temple. So, me and my wife followed him and went out of the temple.

Ever since then, i wanted to be a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba. I came across your e-mail address while searching via google for Shirdi Sai Baba's information. Please let me know how I should worship him. Is it o.k if I keep a picture of Shirdi Sai baba next to Lord Buddha and worship him everyday in the morning and evening?

Now really there are many ways of worshiping Sai Baba and in this post we will read most popular ways of worshiping Sai Baba . The right way for you would be the one you are attracted to. The writer always pray before the picture of Sai Baba, meditate on Sai Baba, and ask Him or His grace to write through the writer. So few days ago, while the writers daily worship he asked Sai Baba to write about the ways of worshiping Sai Baba, as many devotees are looking for it and the post could be of guidance to them.

A story had struck in writer's mind (Sai Baba pointed to the story). It was a story about a female devotee 'Mahali'. Her name was Radhe and Sai Baba called her Mahali. Detailed story of Mahali will be written on Stories of Sai Baba in couple of days. Here it is worthy to mention that she had tremendous love and devotion for Sai Baba. She was very poor in material wealth. She survived on the alms given by the devotees visiting Shirdi. She would bless those who gave her alms. The blessings of her remained the same for all, "You will remain a married couple all your life. You will have 5 grandsons. You will be happy and my 'Shai Baba' will bless you. She used to call Sai Baba as Shai Baba.

Sai Baba accepted garland made by her and would keep the garland around his neck whole day. At times she would collect wild fruits from forest and offer the fruits to Sai Baba as prasad. Sai Baba would accept the same because of her intense love and devotion. It would be appropriate to note here number of devotees visited Shirdi during that time and plenty of garlands, rich food and other things were offered to Sai Baba. Sai Baba would accept the offerings from those who had intense love and devotion for Baba. Materially rich or poor did not matter at all.

Once Sai Baba gave her a dream vision and said few things to her, of which see joyously told everybody she met. At the end of the dream Sai Baba stood in her front and told her

"Keep calling me Shai Baba Shai Baba all the time day and night."

This satement of Sai Baba speaks volumes about ways of worship or devotion to Sai Baba. It points to the intense love and devotion towards Sai Baba. It does not matter even if you cannot pronounce His name in the right way. Spiritual journey with Sai Baba is not a dry one. It is a love affair. We feel a love relationship with Sai Baba. He is not just a guide on spiritual path. He is there with all His love and compassion which we feel when we are devoted to Him. He is a Father, Mother, friend in whatever way we see Him. Remembrance of a statement of Sri Ramakrishna in Gospel of Ramakrishna comes to mind.

It is enough to have yearning for God. It is enough to love Him and feel attracted to Him. Don't you know that God is the Inner Guide? He sees the longing of our heart and the yearning of our soul. Suppose a man has several sons. The older boys address him distinctly as 'Baba' or 'Papa', but the babies can at best call him 'Ba' or 'Pa'. Now, will the father be angry with those who address him in this indistinct way? The father knows that they too are calling him, only they cannot pronounce his name well. All children are the same to the father. Likewise, the devotees call on God alone, though by different names. They call on one Person only. God is one, but His names are many."

Above we have seen most important factor of Worship. Now let us see some mode of worshiping Sai Baba of Shirdi, not forgetting that deep love towards Him.

Since you have asked, "Please let me know how I should worship him. Is it o.k if I keep a picture of Shirdi Sai baba next to Loard Budhdha and worship him everyday in the morning and evening?"

Lets start with worshiping of Sai Baba photo or Statue. As stated above in the quote of Sri Ramakrishna. God is our inner guide. You have already been guided by Sai Baba. The answer is there in the question itself. You should be doing what your heart has said.

Keep a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba next to Lord Buddha and worship him everyday in morning and evening.

Some points that might be helpful in worship of picture of Sai Baba. This points are just a guide and there should be no strict following in every one of them. Do what the heart tells, first we have look for the inner attraction, the inner love. Love is the most important aspect in worship. It should not be felt as daily core or duty.
Sai Baba loved oil lamps and fire. So oil lamp lit during the worship would be great. Some devotees (including the writer) keeps an oil lamp lit day and night in front of Baba's picture, More important is the light of remembrance of Sai Baba or God in our heart. Miracles of Shirdi Sai Baba

Miracles were day to day affair in Shirdi while Sai Baba was embodied and lived in a lonely village of Shirdi. The masjid which he lovingly called Dwarkamai ( Sacred Mother) was not a very good condition. Yet he chose the place for the sacred gold the place possesses.

Speaking of miracles many happened in Dwarkamai.

Dwarkamai was old and neglected building until Sai Baba chose to make it a place to settle down in Shirdi. Once Sai Baba was eating with fellow devotees. In the noon time few devotees would eat their meal with Sai Baba. When the lunch was being eaten, from the roof of the old building cracking sound was herd. Every one knew that the slab would come crashing down. Some of devotees took to their heals fearing of getting being crushed under the rubble of the collapsed roof.

Sai Baba in the thundering voice called out wait, and continued to eat the afternoon meal. The close devotees who had Faith (Shraddha) in Sai Baba also continued to eat their meal along with Shri Sai Baba. After the meal was complete and every one came out to the safer place. Sai Baba said "Now you may fall", and the roof came crashing down. This is just one of many many miracles that happened in Shirdi.

In fact before Sai Baba's miraculous powers where revealed, He was considered a mad Muslim Fakir (Sufi) by most of the devotees. A mad beggar who begged for the food, smoked chillum (an earthen pipe used in India, which is filled with tobacco or other substances) and looked unconcerned with society in general.

Two miracles changed the attitude of the villagers residing in Shirdi. The mad Fakir (Sufi Beggar) used to beg also for oil. He loved to light oil lamps with wicks in Masjid. Another of His act that would make him look mad. The oil was begged from the local shops which used to sell oil. Some how it was conspired with all the shopkeepers (known as Telis , who owned small local oil mills) that the mad Fakir has to be denied with the free oil, which he burns in the Masjid.

So it happened. One day out of conspiracy all the Telis (oil man) denied to give oil to the mad Fakir. The mad Fakir looked unperturbed and returned to Masjid (Dwarkamai). Those who conspired wanted to have some fun at the expense of Mad Fakir. They stealthily followed the Fakir. Hidden at a distance they watched what the Fakir would do.

What happened changed the way they looked at the Fakir. Fakir known as Sai Baba, drank some water and spit the same in the container in which he used to beg for oil. He poured the water from it in the earthen lamps. To the conspirators it was still the pleasure to watch a mad man, trying to light lamp with water. The fakir lighted the lamps which remained burning all night long.

This was the incident when the villagers came to know that the Fakir, an ordinary beggar was no ordinary man. He was gifted with some great mystical powers.

The above two miracles shows Sai Baba's power and command over the material elements. This are recorded too many. All the stories with miracles will be link listed below this post. However it was the other miracle that begin to draw the devotees to Sai Baba. The miracles that were filled with love and compassion. People came to knew about the a Saint called Sai Baba who had miraculous powers.

But miraculous powers can attract the mind only as an amusement. It was this characteristic of the mind which was used by Sai Baba to attract people. Once they came near Him, they found a loving, full of compassion Baba (Father). Sai Baba was and is a loving companion who takes care of all His devotees. His presence is felt too strongly in good times as well as bad times. That's why most devotees while speaking of Sai Baba, uses the word Baba

A companion that joked and laughed with his devotees in spite of His sacred presence and overwhelming miraculous and spiritual powers. To record his miracles in a post is impossible task. In fact most of the stories and experiences of devotees covers some sort of miracle.

Some characteristics of Sai Baba's miracles are

Baba knew details of every one coming to Him, the details that happened in their life and details of what they had thought of in past or were thinking in present. This happened every day, with many. So a book is required to record them all.

Healing : Sai Baba used to take ailments and physical sufferings on to His body. Number of incident have been recorded where a devotee (or a near relative) would have high fever. Sai Baba's body would become hot with fever, and tremble as it happens with a fever patient. After few minutes Sai Baba would become normal and so would be the devotee. Same as fever other ailments like huge boil on the body would appear on Sai Baba body, same size and same place the devotee would be suffering. The devotee would be free from the ailment after the same. Sai Baba used to say and to His near devotees still listen and feel it, "I take upon the troubles and ailments of my devotees on myself." Such is the love of Guru Sai Baba. For the devotees who feels his grace He is not God. He is a loving companion. A Father, A Mother, A Friend, A God who can be worshiped, and much much more. It would be better to call Sai Baba of Shirdi as love incarnate. There are many miracles where devotees got free from stubborn diseases and ailments. One such miracle of curing stubborn disease.

Another miracle deals with His sacred and divine presence. Devotees who saw Sai Baba would feel drawn towards His love and compassion. The love and compassion would be felt too much for them. The mind would be filled with unknown love and easiness and joy. Eyes would flow with tears unkown. Hair on the body would stand on their end. Overall the experience cannot be put in words, those who feels knows. Nobody can describe love. It has to be felt and lived. Same is true for divine love and sacred experience.

Sai Baba appears in Physical form to His devotees. There are many records where a devotee far away from Shirdi would see Sai Baba appearing, talking and guiding. This happens even after Sai Baba leaving His physical body (MahaSamadhi). Sai Baba when was in physical body would sometime shout and scream in Dwarkamai. To the newly onlooker it was just crazy, mad ! Why is the holy man shouting or screaming. It was out His immense love. Would you believe this amazing miracle with Capt. Jahanghir F. Daruwala which happened during world war 1. Well it happened.

Miracle of progeny. Sai Baba was and is known for helping His devotees looking for offspring. There are many incidents that narrates how the parents wishing to have children but were deprived of due to medical reasons. Two miracles in the early days of Shirdi changed the peoples view towards the mad Sufi Fakir, called Sai Baba. Other one after the lighting the lamps with oil was a close devotee who did not had children prayed to Baba for having the children. Soon after devotees wife got pregnant and gave birth to a child. Even these days so many devotees visit the holy shrine of Sai Baba (Sai Baba Mandir, Samadhi Temple) in Shirdi for the same and get positive results.

Sai Baba in dreams. One more characteristic of Sai Baba is appearance in dreams of various devotees. Records shows that so many devotees who had never seen or herd of Sai Baba, first had a vision of Sai Baba in dreams and than after some more or less time sees the Picture of Sai Baba and realized, hey this is the same saint with kerchief on His head who appeared in my dreams. The newest feature in Google Maps called Street views has been added. It should take a long time to get that feature for Shirdi :(. But when the feature is available for Shirdi, devotees will enjoy a virtual tour which seems so realistic, it would be anytime visit to Shirdi streets. Devotees will virtually be able to roam about in streets of Shirdi with 360 degree view, to all their favorite places like Samadhi Temple, Dwarkamai , Chavadi and Gurusthan. We feel authorities form Sri Saibaba Sansthan, Trust Shirdi should contact the google maps and work something out on this project of google street view for Shirdi. As they are actively providing live online darshan of Samadhi temple on net and Tata sky television. Other huge projects of Sri Saibaba Sansthan, Trust Shirdi are shown in the video at the end of Shirdi travel post.

So am writing a post that would be helpful for the first time visitors to Shirdi. Some Tips and a sort of simple guide which covers most essentials for Shirdi visit. Below are essential tips and guide to Shirdi visit, It covers most topics to make your Shirdi trip a pleasurable and divine experience with minimum hassles.

How to reach Shirdi ?

From Mumbai you can travel through bus to Shirdi. I don't think Shirdi railway station is operational. It might take some time, to visit Shirdi by train.

However you can make a search on Indian railways website, for availability and online railway ticket booking. There is a search train option which you can use. From your city (any city within India) you can choose for Shirdi railway station the code for the same is SHIRDI O A (SAIO).

The nearest railway stations from Shirdi are Kopergaon (16 kilometers from Shridi in distance) often spelt as Kopergaun (this spelling is not available on railway site) the code for same to make a search on Indian railway booking site is KOPARGAON (KPG). Another nearest railway Station from Shirdi is Manmad code for the same is MANMAD JN (MMR) (60 kilometers to Shirdi in distance ). So that solves the problem for finding a train from one destination to Shirdi railway station or the nearest railway stations in India.

Another option to travel to Shirdi is by Bus. There are bus service provider all around India for the same and it is the most widely used mode of transportation from earlier days until these days. Things might change once the trains starts arriving at Shirdi Railway Station.

Traveling from Major cities like Mumbai , Pune, Ahmednagar, (Maharashtra)
or cities like Surat, Baroda and Ahmedabad the best route available is traveling by road. So the trip can be your car, a taxi or bus.

Below is the list of cities nearest to Shirdi with railway connections and airports from all part of country. From these cities, bus services and taxi services are easily available to travel to Shirdi.

Distance from Mumbai to Shirdi by road is about 300 kms ( distance varies from various destinations like railway station, domestic airport, international airport)

Distance from Nashik to Shirdi is 100 kilometers (Has Domestic Airport)

Distance from Ahmednagar to Shirdi is 100 kilometers (Has Domestic Airport)

Distance for Aurangabad to Shirdi is 120 Kilometers (Has Domestic Airport)

Distance from Pune to Shirdi is 220 kilometers (Has Domestic Airport)

For cheap (not exactly cheap, Sri Saibaba Sansthan, Trust Shirdi, provides more facilities for the cost paid than any other hotels or guest houses) accommodation there are many provided by Sansthan, Trust, check the same at sansthan's web site's accomodation page for complete details. The rooms provided by Sansthan cannot be booked in advance but are given on first come first serve basis. Shirdi Sai Sansthan however books the room for the padyatris (group of devotees traveling on feet to Shirdi from their cities, carrying the Palkhi of Sai Baba) in advance, those devotees also don't have to wait in queue for Darshan at Samadhi Temple.

Speaking of que for Samadhi Darshan Temple there are ample facilities for the same. Devotees in queue are well taken care of. Facilities for sitting are found ever few meters.For old age visitors, children and sick people. (Senior citizens and physically impaired people can ask for direct darshan passes from Sansthan, which means they don't have to pass through the waiting of standing in queue for long time. ) Also every few meters one finds fans to cool the body, as well as TV sets providing the darshan of Samdahi Temple are always in view. Good devotional music with Sai Baba Bhajans or mantra chanting can be herd all the time. Immediate refreshments like water, tea, coffee, biscuits are available at very cheap rates every few meters.

If you cannot get accommodation there, there are lots and lots of hotels and guest houses. Visit few, and find the best that comes in your budget. There you might face many touts claiming to book a hotel or guest house for you.Even the bus service provider might try to persuade to book a hotel for your stay. Do not rely on any one, but have a look yourself for all the facilities and cleanliness that the hotel or guest house provides. Only after that choose a room for your stay. Best would be to rent a place to stay near Samadhi Temple or Dwarkamai. Similarly while you go for Darshan in the Temple people would gather around claiming to help you out in getting the darshan soon. It does not happen. What happens is, you end up buying pooja articles like garland at much higher cost then available at other shops. So if you require any help Sri Saibaba Sansthan, Trust's office would be the best place to visit. If you want to buy books, puja articles Sansthan's book store and Sansthan's stores located around the Samadhi Temple are the best spots to check out first.

Don't Don't Don't listen to people gathering around you to provide help to you.

However on three major festivals of Shirdi 1. Ram Navami, 2. Guru Poornima and Vijaya Dashmi or Dussera or Baba's Mahasamadhi day. Shirdi is crowded to Suffocation. If you plan to visit Shirdi on one of these these festival days make bookings of Hotels and travel, well in advance.

Along with the other details asked i will like to add few more details. Most people take the darshan in Samadhi Temple and that all for them. There are few more important places associated with Sai Baba like Dwarkamai, Chavadi Gurusthan (Clicking on the links provided will take you to the pages which tries to give more details about each sacred places). There are two very good books with details of Shirdi published ambrosia in Shirdi (link will take to online version of book) This book is must for first time visitors of Shirdi as well as those visiting again and again. One will find details of important places to visit in and around Shirdi. You can buy this book from the author herself (I bought the books from her :)) Ms. Vinny Chitluri. Two other must read books written by her are Baba's Vaani and Baba's Rinanubandh.

Three sacred places to Visit around Shirdi i would not miss are 1. Meher Baba's Samadhi (About 100 kiolmeters in distance from Shirdi to Ahmednagar) Checkout road map to Ahmednagar from Shirdi, 2. Tomb of Zar Zari Zarbaksh in Khuldabad(about 120 kms in distance from Shirdi very near to Ellora caves (towards Aurangabad ), a famous tourist destination) don't forget the cave nearby if you visit there. 3. Sakori - Ashram of Upasni Baba (5 kilometers in distance fro Shirdi (takes about 10 minutes by road )). For traveling from Shirdi there are many travel agencies operating in Shirdi. Check with few of them to make decision. Avoid people pulling you towards a particular travel operator as you would do with the ones pulling you towards particular Hotel.

Both these books with essential guidance for places in and around Shirdi are available in various stores in Shirdi, so grab them while in Shirdi.

One thing these books might not have is the Museum in Shirdi. It has been built after this books were published. The museum displays articles used by Sai Baba. So do not forget to visit the Museum in Shirdi, it near Gurusthan.

Another tip is not to miss the food provided at prasadalaya where simple food as prasad of Baba is served. Devotees and visitors can eat unlimited food (rice, vegetables, dal, rice and a sweet) at nominal cost of Rs.5/- per person. The food is cooked in hygienic environment and most of the food is cooked using solar energy (good for global environment). The capacity of prasadalaya is huge and 100,000 people can dine in a single day. It is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Otherwise there are loads and loads of restaurants and food joints serving different kind of food.

Good luxrious hotel recommended for those provided with much money and does not mind spending them are Hotel Goradias (positive point very near to Temple and good food).

Other two hotels are Hotel Sun n Sand Shirdi and Hotel Park Inn Shirdi (earlier known as Shraddha Park Inn).
