Mobile Malware - How to Protect Yourself and Keep Your Information Safe

2011-04-18T06:08:00.000-07:00

Imagine your closest friend standing next to you. Now imagine your closest friend betraying all of your secrets. And making a handsome profit whilst doing so. Now picture your smartphone inside your handbag or pocket. Picture your smartphone sending your passwords, banking information, e-mails, and private information to some stranger. And picture that stranger making a handsome profit. That is mobile malware.

What is mobile malware, really?
In more technical terms, mobile malware is the spread of malicious software (hence "mal-ware") among wireless devices. Mobile Malware is unpleasant stuff. It could compromise the information on a mobile device, and there have even been cases of compromised devices used to pull information from Personal computers (hijacking USB synchronization). Mobile malware is yet another growing fraud category which involves infecting mobile devices with viruses and Trojan horses that may force a mobile phone to do unauthorized activities, like making phone calls and deleting or stealing information.

Once installed on a device, mobile malware replicates itself and performs undesired activities, such as using network services like SMS or voice to make calls to PRS numbers or to subscribe to unwanted billing schemes; data theft, where the user's personal phone records such as contact lists and account details are stolen, sent to a third-party, and erased on the handset; and launching distributed DoS attacks intent on forcing a legitimate service to fail.

Not only is mobile malware a threat to individuals, it is also a huge security risk to businesses. It has the potential to commandeer a corrupted smartphone and use it as a proxy or gateway into an organization's central network. By commandeering a handheld device, cyber criminals can waltz past a standard firewall program and make their way onto a company's email server, client database, Customer relationship management tools, and other essential parts of the network. Damage of this magnitude can grow from something very small, such as a member of staff getting a message to download a free game or software update.

Mobile Malware is rapidly increasing
Mobile malware is on the rise for several reasons and it is following the Law of Computer Virus Evolution:

The Law of Computer Virus Evolution
In order for malicious programs targeting a particular operating system or platform to emerge, three conditions need to be fulfilled:
1. The platform must be popular
2. There must be well-documented development tools
3. The presence of vulnerabilities or coding errors

The widespread adoption of 3G (and soon 4G) and Wi-Fi connectivity and huge hard drives are other factors contributing to the increase of mobile malware infection. In fact, malware activity in 2010 increased 46 per cent over 2009.

The good news is that practically all mobile malware threats call for some type of effort on the part of the user. Malware can't magically appear on your phone. It usually happens after a user downloads a malicious app and the recent DroidDream incident reveals that mobile malware is more advanced than ever before.

How to stop mobile malware and protect yourself
Keeping a close eye on the app stores is a must, as Google proved. Google banished about 50 free applications from its app store immediately after it was found out that the titles hid a Trojan horse designed to steal users' information. The applications, which included pirated and copycat versions of legitimate Android titles, had been downloaded tens of thousands of times before Google took corrective action.

The best way to protect your mobile device (and yourself) is to take a layered approach to mobile security. Before you download that shiny new app, look at its permissions. An app shouldn't receive more permissions that what it needs. For example, a simple notepad app shouldn't need unrestricted access to the internet. Also, don't download apps from unauthorized or illegitimate app stores.

The second layer should be a very good antivirus app on your phone, and the third layer should be a firewall. If you choose wisely, the second and third security layers can be found wrapped up in a mobile security app.

How to choose an effective mobile security app
An typical mobile security solution will have capabilities that assist in operating the program and efficiently protecting the device. A very good mobile security application will include things like antivirus, antispam and firewall protection with realtime security. An exceptional mobile security application will have all of the preceding, as well as sms protection, remote wipe (in case your smartphone is stolen), and gps location (again, in case your smartphone is stolen).

What is the best mobile security app?
Ask ten experts and you'll get ten different answers. This question is almost as hotly debated as "what's the best antivirus software for my computer?" In order to narrow down my choices, I used the criteria mentioned above to come up with a list of mobile security applications. As you can see, many of the desktop giants of antivirus software have developed mobile versions of their software. The list isn't comprehensive, but it will give you a good starting point.

iPad 2 - The Apple 2nd Generation Tablet

2011-04-16T14:19:00.000-07:00

So Steve Jobs announced on 2nd March at a media event in San Francisco that the 2nd generation iPad called, following the company trend, iPad 2 will ship in the US from 11th March, and from 25th March all over the world.

The obvious question that comes to mind is: "Is it really worthy?" The first generation iPad came out less than year ago (it was April 2010), and it was a huge success, much bigger that everybody expected. Since then, all the big companies have been working hard to catch up with Apple, trying to come up with some better tablet solution. We've seen the Samsung Galaxy Pad, the Motorola Xoom, the HP TouchPad, the BlackBerry PlayBook and many many more, each one with its own pros and cons. The competition got fierce, the prices are aggressive and the performances grew. So Apple was forced to anticipate their next generation tablet to avoid losing precious market shares, and here we have it, the iPad 2, according to Jobs, faster, thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

It has a dual core processor, the old one had only a single core; the graphics performance are 9 times better than the old one; it comes with two cameras, one in the rear at 720p resolution, and one in the front at VGA resolution, where the original iPad had none; it has a gyroscope just like the iPhone 4. Those are pretty much the new features, everything else is the same, like the screen size and resolution (9,7" 1024x768), the storage sizes (16/32/64GB) and the connections. So yes, it still lacks a USB port, for some reason Apple doesn't think it's a good idea to put one, and they're right, as nobody really seems to care. The prices are the same as the old generation, the basic model, 16GB and no 3G, sells at $499, while the more accessorized one, 64GB and 3g connection, ships at $829.

No matter what the competition offers, more power, more connections, more resolution, more battery life, no tablet can come close to the Apple product, no other tablet has the same appeal as the iPad 2, and that is due to the incredible marketing work that Steve Jobs has done. All Apple products have become a status symbol, because they do exactly what they're supposed to, and they do it better than the rest. And not to mention, they're beautiful piece of hardware, and this 2nd generation iPad is no different.

Asus Eee PC 1215B Review

2011-04-16T00:29:00.000-07:00

The Asus Eee PC 1215B is the younger brother of Asus 1215T. The new netbook makes use of the newly released AMD Fusion platform and is powered by the new dual core AMD E350 processor that runs at 1.66GHz clock speed and features ATi Radeon HD 6310 graphics card that promises full HD video playback.

This Eee PC comes with either 2GB DDR3 RAM or 4GB DDR3 RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 6-cell battery. The 1215B has same chassis as other 12.1-inch Asus netbooks. However, unlike 1201T, it has matte surface which does not catch smudges easily. The palm rest and trackpad has matte plastic as well. It does not feel heavy in hands as it still weighs under 2 kilograms with battery. On the left of the unit, you will find the power port, VGA port, HDMI and a USB port. There is also a card reader that accepts both SD as-well-as MMC cards. On the right, there are two more USB ports, Ethernet port, Kensington lock, earphone and headphone jack.

It comes with a 12.1-inch display that packs 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. This is the same resolution which was there in the 1201n model launched 2 years ago. The colors looks great and since it has a glossy finish, the screen is more suited for indoor use. Viewing angles are decent and you will have no problems in watching a movie with your friend sitting next to you. Typing on the 1215B was a pleasant experience. It has a chiclet-style keyboard with 95 percent full size keys that ensures that you are able to type comfortably. The only thing not to like about it is the small right shift key which can take some time to get used to. Touchpad is big and spacious compared to the other 12.1-inch netbooks. All the multi-touch gestures offered by the netbook worked like a charm. I loved using two-finger gesture to scroll webpages and PDF files.

For expansion, you get two memory slots. To replace RAM, you will have to unscrew two screws located at the back. Make sure you have installed Windows 7 64-bit edition to recognize all that extra RAM. Performance-wise, it is the most powerful netbook I have ever tested. It scored nearly 2000 points in the 3DMarks test and 0.62 points in the Cinebench benchmark test, both of which are extraordinary for a notebook this small. Asus surely has a clear winner in their hands.

Android Security - Tips for Keeping Your Android Based Devices Secure

2011-04-15T10:30:00.000-07:00

Android based devices are the only devices that are holding their ground and gaining new adopters against Apple's seeming onslaught in the phone and tablet marketplace. People love the Apple iPhone and iPad for the beautiful design and ease of use and rightfully so. Users that prefer Android devices over Apple devices are often more independent types who like to tinker and prefer the openness of Android to the more tightly controlled and regulated Apple devices. If you are a fan of Android based devices and are considering purchasing one or already own one you now might be asking yourself how do I make sure it is secure?

When implementing security for Android based devices many of the general techniques that work for securing any type of mobile device is relevant and can be configured within Android.

Some of the general security risks you should be concerned about include:

Securing your Android device from unauthorized use. This is best done by setting a screen lock to prevent friends, casual snoopers, or thieves from accessing your device without permission. I have seen many a friend pranked at the bar by leaving an unprotected device alone while going out for a smoke so to avoid having an embarrassing new Facebook status posted it is important to lock your device when it is not in use.Avoid prying eyes that know your location. Location based features on Android devices have many useful features and applications associated with them but if you desire privacy more then functionality it is important to turn these options off to prevent people from knowing more details about your location then you would want.Consider security when browsing the Internet. Internet browsing and email are the two most common methods that devices become infected with malware. It is important to configure your Android security settings to enable secure Internet browsing to prevent unwanted pop-ups and other nasty infections that could compromise the security of your device.Carefully consider which applications are worth installing and lean towards applications from vendors with a proven track record. It is important to remember that any one insecurely coded application that you install could compromise the security of your entire Android device.Promptly update your applications when new versions are available and consider implementing the auto-update feature to lower your chances of forgetting. Un-patched applications are a major source of insecurity and a frequent target of malware authors.

This is just an introduction to some of the information security risks you are exposed to by using an Android based device (and many of these risks also apply to any smart phone type device). It is important to be aware of the risks and take proper action to keep your device secure and in good operating condition.

How the Tablet Makers Should Thank Their Users Now

2011-04-13T18:00:00.000-07:00

The tablet is growing to be the next big thing in the world of communication devices, and while many are buying the tablet on mere face value, there is still the market that believes in cheap communication, where the tablets are not so popular. While the tablet is extremely useful and has a number of applications and services that make life easier for the user, not many are comfortable with the amount of money that they would need to pay each month for using these applications, or being online. Here are three ways how the tablet manufacturers can thank buyers right now.

Offer Free GPRS:

The best thing about the tablet is that it offers a never before chance to browse the Internet on a mobile platform. With a large screen, better keyboards and support to newer features, the Tablet may be the best mobile internet device right now. However, for the casual mobile internet user, the price of the GPRS connection per month might be a bit expensive.

Therefore, tablet users should look at offering free GPRS services for a few weeks or months, before the users can get hooked up to the idea of mobile internet on their Tablet.

Offer Free Apps:

While most tablet making companies offer many apps, not all of them are useful and even worthy of making a list of apps. If the tablet makers would offer some of the more popular apps for free for a while, the popularity of apps and that particular app would certainly rise, and add to the already burgeoning market of tablets and palmtops. Apart from apps, the tablet makers can even put in some free games that would be worthy of play - that will definitely get the younger generation interested in tablets.

Lower the Prices:

The price of a tablet is high, but not exorbitant. However, for a new gadget in the market, the price is not something that anyone would pay for, so the tablet makers should work towards lowering the prices of the gadget, and make it all the more viable for the people who intend to buy them. With the lowered prices, there will be a lot of buzz in the market, and it will herald an opportunity for the lesser budget tablets to make an entry into the market.

These are the three ways in which the tablet makers can thank their users right now.

Business On The Go!

2011-04-13T05:27:00.000-07:00

With technology growing stronger and becoming even more improved in the future, the possibility of mobile businesses will soon (if they haven't already) take off. I'm not talking about mobile businesses in the form of Mobile Coffee Shops or Hotdog stands at the footy game or that type of thing. What I'm talking about is a business model where you can travel around Australia in hopes to get clients or work. In my business set-up, I have chosen to conduct a service to potential clients and have the advantage of acquiring most of the necessary equipment, devices and skills to utilise mobile friendly sources. So, I thought I would share my tips with you.

Cloud Computing - Cloud Computing is fantastic! You can upload your important files onto a server on the internet and access them from wherever you are, anywhere. With Dropbox you can get a free account with 2 GB of data and for every person you refer you can get up to 8GB free, that's 8GB of storage data for free. All you need to do is login from a computer to access your files. The other benefit is that if you have an iPad or iPhone you can download the free App and access your files from your iPad as well. I would be lost without Dropbox and Google Docs as I use three computers sometimes and if I can't find the flash Drive or Hard Drive that has the file I want to access I can just look on one of my 'Cloud' accounts and access it from there. You can also edit files from Dropbox or Google Docs which means if you edit a document from your laptop, when you logon to your PC, the updated file will be there ready.

My favourites: Dropbox, GoogleDocs, Microsoft Mobile Office.

Apple iPad/iPod - I have to say that the most wonderful thing I have bought recently is the new 3G Apple iPad. I'm hooked. Buying this device for my business was probably the best thing I could have done in regards to setting up a mobile business. There is literally thousands of Apps that you can download (a lot of free ones too) for your iPad or iPod that can allow you to conduct business on the go and below you will see the top apps that I'll be using while travelling.

Accounting - EasyBooks (Free),Bookkeeping(19.99)Client Management - MyCRM, MobileCRM (Both Free)Time Management - Time Master & Billing (12.99)To Do List - Manage(3.99), TodoforiPad (5.99), EasyNote (Free), Sorted (1.19)Note-taking - Daily Notes ($5.99), Chronicle ($2.49), Evernote (Free)Personal Finance - Bills ($4.99), CashFlow (Free),MoneyDance (Free)Documents - Quick Office Mobile Suite ($19.99), Documents Mobile Office (Free)Productivity -Good Reader ($1.19), MyThoughts (Free)Templates - 1001 Letters ($5.99), Email Templates ($3.99)Databases - Bento ($5.99), IDatabase ($3.99),Database for iPad (Free)AssetRegister - Computer Inventory ($2.49)Transactions - Xpense Tracker ($3.99), Acct Pad (Free)Photography-Photogene($4.99),AdobePhotoshopExpress-(Free)Remote Desktop - Wyse ($17.99), Teamviewer (Free)Decisions - IThoughts ($9.99), SWOT Maker ($3.99), SWOT by Ideas Wallets (Free)Quotes - IQuote ($1.19)

Internet Connectivity - There are many options now to access the internet, including Mobile Broadband, 3G Mobile Networks, Satellite Internet, Hot Spots, PIE Internet Kiosks, and Internet Cafes. With the more and more access points for connectivity you are sure to get some kind of internet capability in about 95% of Australia, which makes mobile business even easier.

Mobile Phones - Your mobile Phone can be one of the best devices you could get. With Smart Phones, Blackberries, iPhones and other mobiles you can access not only the internet but also your emails, applications and all sorts of business and personal utilities that you can use while travelling.

Virtual Office - There is a service that you can purchase that can help you manage your contacts and clients. What you do is pay a monthly fee to an agency (ServCorp) and what happens is, depending on the services you require; you can get a virtual address in a capital city of the state you wish, where all your mail can be redirected there. A virtual receptionist can monitor your calls for you and when you're in range she or he can relay those messages to you so you can call them back when you get to the next town. Or if you need exposure in a different state you can access a more business like address in the state you wish.

Telecentres - Telecentres would have to be the most underutilized resource you can use. They are in almost every town, have office equipment that you can hire to use, you can print, laminate, type, browse the internet, use the computer, use the fax machine and all kinds of things that you would usually need in an office setting but not essential while on the road.

Checklist - Below is a checklist that I have come up with for conducting a Mobile Business. You can add to this list if you wish or amend it to cater for your own situation.

iPad & iPodLaptopDropbox & Google Docs Accounts up-to-dateMobile PhoneMobile BroadbandWeb Apps & ITunes Apps up-to-date for iPad/iPodList of Telecentres or Business Assistance CentresWireless Keyboard for iPadSmall digital cameraNote takerPortfolioBriefcaseMini Filing System (portable plastic kind)Portable Hard DrivePortable Printer (possibly)VMware software for Virtual Machine2 Great Notebooks (with Tabs)Tricolour Pens ( 4 coloured Red, Green, Blue & Black, great space savers)Wireless Mouse & Mouse PadSmall Bed Tray (Improvised for Mini Desk)Business Card HolderService Proposal & Signs PremadeForwarding addressVirtual Office (Serve Corp, or message service)

So, if you think a mobile business is the way to go for you, then take the plunge and try it, you will see that all the items that you have in your own office can be easily improvised for on the road, and you too can enjoy the both the travelling lifestyle and the business you always wanted.

Important: I do advise that you should consult your business advisor or the Small Business Development Commission in your local area about tax commitments, legislation, type of business structure, and other factors that you may need to consider in conducting a mobile business. It is definitely not for everyone and you may not be able to do it, so do your homework first!

Nokia's Partnership With Microsoft: A Good Choice?

2011-04-11T14:23:00.000-07:00

When Nokia filed its paperwork with the U.S. SEC, it brought to light some of the many interesting trials that the company may have to deal with when it goes forward with its partnership with Microsoft.

It was stated that Nokia will begin to officially phase out their current phone software, which is entitled Symbian, and will instead be installing Microsoft Windows Phone software in its place. What hardships could this possibly cause for the company?

First off, the new software from Microsoft is still in is early stages. With many of the major smart phones today carrying either the Android OS or the Apple OS, it may be quite difficult for this partnership to blossom in an environment which is already dominated by other more popular, and more proven operating systems.

Secondly, there is no telling how long it will take to fully integrate Microsoft's software effectively into Nokia's fleet of hardware. If it takes too long, it may not grow properly and become competitive enough to play a major role in this particular arena.

Third is usually the most obvious in a partnership of this kind, money. Back in 2008, Nokia made a major purchase of Symbian. They spent $200 million (USD) to purchase the part of the company not already in their possession. The upside to this was that Symbian was a royalty-free software. However, now Nokia will have to pay royalties to Microsoft.

When it comes to an arrangement of this kind, it really is difficult to tell if it will work out in the long run. Nokia, who is foreseeing layoffs of large groups of its employees, may have to also face a hit in the form of morale. Even when you consider their optimistic view of the situation and their expectations of growth, it still carries a lot of weight when a company doesn't publicize its annual targets for the coming year.

In the end, will it work out for Nokia and Microsoft? We'll just have to wait and see. While it is entirely possible that, Microsoft will be able to use the exposure of Nokia to its advantage in this instance, and of course, vice versa, both companies need to realize what they are up against. This is a battlefield of fierce competition and neither Apple nor Android want to lose customers. If Nokia and Microsoft want to plant themselves solidly in this market, they will need to strike firmly and with a total product that has few glitches. If they cannot deliver in this fashion, it may cost both companies more than just a financial hardship.

It is important to try to find ways to increase the battery life on your HTC Desire phone.

The HTC smart phone is crammed full of applications and features and they have a huge effect on the battery life. With average usage, the battery will only last for 5 or 6 hours.

This article will give you a few ideas on how to almost double the life of your HTC Desire battery.

I will go through what you will need to do and also tell you a way to do this quickly and easily.

How To Increase The HTC Desire's Battery Life

There are programs and applications on the Desire that run in the background and will quickly drain your battery. When not being used, the following should be switched off:
your mobile networkthe wireless connectionyour phone's blue tooth connectionthe GPS signalautomatic updates

Another easy way to decrease battery usage is to dim the back light for the screen.

When you think about it, none of the above features need to be running until you actually need them. For example, you would only need to switch on your phones automatic updates and mobile network when you need the internet. The wireless signal is only any use when you are within range of a wireless connection.

The GPS signal could be only turned on when using Google Maps or a similar program.

This would be very time-consuming if you had to go into every program to turn it on and off but there is a much easier way. Here's what to do.

The HTC Desire Power Control Widget

If you go into your Desire's 'Widget' list (press the + sign in the bottom right corner) you should scroll down to find the 'Power Control' widget.

Drag it to a location that is easily accessible on your screen.

The Power Control panel has 5 blocks which, from left to right, are switches for the following:

Simply press the block you need and it will light up to show it is in use. The back light button has 3 different brightness levels.

Finally, to switch the whole mobile network on and off, press and hold the Stand-By button on the top of the phone and press the Mobile Network button.

I have used the above steps and have seen a huge increase in the battery life of my HTC Desire smart phone.
