Born in Armenia, Ovanes Berberian received academic training under his father, a noted artist. He immigrated to the United States in the 1970's. Berberian was awarded a scholarship to study with master painter Sergei Bongart. A plein air purist, Berberian elects to paint only from life, inspired by direct relationship to his subject. Berberian’s keen perception of still life enable him to simplify subject matter, reducing the components to their most fundamental and poetic form.

This workshop is a very rare opportunity, as Berberian usually only teaches in his Idaho or California locations. It is recommended that you reserve your space right away, as space is limited.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council: Call to Artists

ARTISTS INVITED TO SUBMIT ARTWORK CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF HILLSBORO

The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) is seeking submissions of two-dimensional artwork that represent the character and spirit of Hillsboro. From the submissions, the City of Hillsboro will select its first purchase for Hillsboro’s Public Art Collection. Placing more art on view implements Hillsboro’s 2020 Vision and Action Plan and Public Art Master Plan. The original selected artwork will remain in Hillsboro, while limited edition archival reproductions will be presented as gifts to dignitaries visiting Hillsboro and on Mayor Jerry Willey’s official visits to other cities. Through these official gifts, the City of Hillsboro will express its pride in its creative community.

Paintings, drawings, prints or photographs are eligible. Only existing two-dimensional artwork will be considered by for selection. The artwork should represent the characteristic landscape, city views or landmarks of Hillsboro. The purchase price cannot exceed $500.

Complete “Call for Submissions” is provided below (via the Scribd website, click on link), including submission guidelines and eligibility details. All artists are eligible, but Hillsboro artists are especially encouraged to apply. The deadline is Tuesday, January 31, 2012.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council is coordinating the competition as part of its mission to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community.

I want to announce I am teaching another 3-day alla prima oil painting workshop this January in the Portland, Oregon area. And this time I've scheduled it over a weekend to minimize the impact on the work week. Last year's class was quite popular, and we had fun while learning a lot.

Painting Landscapes, Gardens & Street Scenes

Mondays 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

We will study how to quickly establish the composition, light and dark masses, and pictorial space using Classical and Baroque concepts; convincing light and values; the influence of the sky on color, atmosphere and diffraction; the effects of aerial perspective; mixing Naturalistic and Impressionistic colors; and rendering foliage with painterly techniques. The street scene projects will show how to set up and develop the architecture, perspective, light and shadow pattern, the effects of atmosphere and figures.

The demonstrations and projects introduce and explore the concepts, principles, thinking, values, philosophies, techniques and methods of Classical through Nineteenth century Masters, and how to achieve similar results. The studies are designed to understand and emulate their art and assimilate their lessons into one’s own work.

Painting Flesh Tones & Figures

Mondays 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

“Secrets” used by Classical through contemporary figure painting Masters are introduced and demonstrated: establishing the composition, light and dark masses; the proportions, structure and planes of the head and figure; selecting and mixing colors on the palette; layering and blending naturalistic skin tones on the canvas; capturing the warm, cool and neutral variations, and the transparency of the flesh; modeling the forms of the figure; interpreting the effects of light and atmosphere; alla prima brush and palette knife techniques; and helpful studio tips.

Oil Painting: Concepts, Principles & Techniques Ongoing

Sundays 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm (longer 4 hour class)

A long-term program that covers all of the elements of planning and executing paintings: concept, composition, shape, value, color, edges, paint quality, brushwork, artistic unity and effect, and studying the Masters. While applying the concepts, principles and techniques of painting a broad variety of subjects, students will be guided towards cultivating their artistic voice.

Composition

Sundays 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

This workshop teaches how to organize, orchestrate and unify the elements of paintings through compositional forms (i.e., pyramid composition); compositional principles (i.e., attraction); compositional concepts and themes (i.e., shape); movement and transition; how to create an inviting entrance, an interesting visual journey and experience; control of the viewer's path and pace; providing a comfortable exit, color structure; two-dimensional design and integration; special concerns related to figure composition; aesthetic considerations; learning from the Masters and other artists; painting concepts and how they influence composition; and developing one's own compositions.

Anatomy for Artists

Tuesdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This program introduces the skeleton, musculature and superficial anatomy; the three-dimensional structure, forms and planes of the figure; the mechanics of the body and its machine-like movement (the skeleton, joints and muscles acting as levers, pulleys, fulcrums and relays); the effects of muscular action and movement; a Classical proportional system and aesthetic principles; and how the anatomy and structure relate to painting and sculpture. This is a great foundation for all of the other classes related to the figure and portraits.

The program introduces drawing and monochrome rendering in dry media and paint; various techniques for using the media; proportional systems, the basic structure and anatomy of men, women and children; movement, drapery and clothing; learning from drawing, painting and sculpture Masters; cast drawing and working from nature; and how to apply drawing lessons to painting and sculpture.

Like the Anatomy program, this class will help anyone who wants to master portraits and the figure.

Today Craig Srebnik did a painting demonstration for us in his garage studio in Lake Oswego. Srebnik's work is described as painterly Classical Naturalism.

1. Srebnik talked to us about perspective, showed us how he massed in large areas, and he talked to us about how shadows are not always cool (blue).... often shadows are warm!

2. At this stage in the painting he added color to the people walking in the street and added warm areas to the rooftops

3. In the end Srebnik unifies the colors by "dragging" colors together and then he subtracts and restates areas. "Many paintings I see, Srebnik says, are overly rendered..it is preferable to allow the viewer the opportunity to participate".

Srebnik Art Academy currently offers classes in the Lake Oswego location and classes will be beginning at Oregon Society of Artists in January. All levels are welcome.

"Jacobsen Family Show" will feature the work of the amazingly talented oil painter Eric Jacobsen and three of his children, Max (age 9), Olivia (age 7) and Owen (age 5). The opening reception is on First Friday Nov 4th, from 5 to 9 pm. Come down and enjoy complimentary light refreshments, live music and see this incredible show and meet the Jacobsen family! Eric Jacobsen on what went into the making of this show:

"Last winter Kevin approached me with the idea of putting together a family show which would feature work by me and also by my three oldest children, Max, Olivia and Owen. I thought about this proposition and then mentioned it to my kids who immediately loved the idea.

When the weather finally turned to spring and painting outdoors became more tolerable, I began bringing the kids out to paint on a regular basis- something they've done in past years and enjoyed greatly. This spring and summer they painted often and with great enthusiasm as they worked toward our "family show". Whenever I'd grab my things and head out the door to paint I'd have at least one kid begging to go along with me. Some days I'd bring one or all three kids along and other days I informed them that for various reasons Daddy needed to go out alone that day.

As we worked our way through the spring and summer seasons I could see these young painters improve. I was continually amazed by what each of them would come up with. At times I would coach them a bit and talk with them about value(light and dark) and color. We'd often decide together what the specific value and hue a distant hill was- or a tree- or a cloud. The curious thing is that while I assumed the role of "teacher" - the one handing out knowledge about the fundamentals of good painting- I ended up receiving as much of an education as my kids did. In looking at their work I was reminded over and over again that it's the simple bold statement that packs the biggest punch in painting. As the great painter and teacher Charles Hawthorne said, " In painting it's all for one thing." My kids seemed to already know this and now I know it. Thank you Max, Olivia and Owen!

The paintings in this exhibit are the result of our journey together as family and fellow painters. I hope you find the joy in them that we found as we wondered at Gods creation with brush in hand. "

We will be at the corner of Broadway and Watson, where there is a gathering place with benches and space to set up easels. The view includes trees, and some old mainstay businesses that have charm.
