Creating a Gallery Wall

Spending more time at home nowadays is the trend. What about catching up on home decorating projects with existing home accessories in your storage room?

There was this wide and blank white wall next to the sofa in the house where we moved in. With two coats of fresh white paint in semi-gloss finish the walls looked much neater.

I chose a semi-gloss finish because it's easier to clean especially with a child around. Cleaning Tip: I use wet wipes to remove drawings on the wall.

I have an existing long white framed mirror that used to be in our bedroom and some old frames. I finally gathered the courage to display my own oil paintings that were inside carton boxes for many years. I changed the images in the 2 wooden frames below. I displayed my artist friend's, Tyago Almario "Break" painting and two of my own; "Tea Time" amd "Le Garcon Pensif".

I traced the frames on paper and used these templates as a guide. It makes it easier to arrange and re-adjust them in preparation for drilling holes.

Et voila! I placed my piano below the frames. It's my way of bringing the most precious things to me within our living space; Family, Music and Art together.

To spice up the living area a bit, I found these inexpensive cushion covers at AllHome .

Finding the Right Sofa

Isn't it daunting which type of sofa you'll purchase and from where? Does it fit our budget? Which color? Suede or leather?

Functionality and style without breaking the bank was our goal. Having moved to a new place with no IKEA to run to (now I realized there's a happy place called Lazada), we were lost in the beginning.

1. First, Choose the right size. Space Planning

When planning your space, it's important to note that the sofa shouldn't be too large nor too small. It should be the right proportion. Which shape would be the best within the space? L-Shaped? Curved? Rectangular?

Are you placing a coffee table? Measure your space and leave some allowance. Make sure there is 18'' (45 cm) distance from your coffee table to the sofa.

If you like lounging and watching movies sinking deep in the sofa, you can go for deeper ones roughly about 40" overall depth with back cushions. Provided your apartment has the space for it. Before buying, you can mark the size of the sofa on the floor where you're placing it using a masking tape or a cut to size paper.

The number of people living in your home + guests should be able to sit comfortably within the living room. Consider adding poufs and arm chairs to accommodate them.

2. Select Ideal Orientation of your Sofa

Where will you place it?

Effective distance from the television screen is 3 meters. Anything beyond this distance makes TV viewing uncomfortable.

I decided to place our sofa where the bay window is. It gives visibility towards the main entrance and the adjacent areas. It is also the first thing you'll notice as soon as you enter. In this way, visitors get a welcoming feeling after you greet them. It's also next to the piano so guests can listen comfortably.

3. Budget

There are many shops in the Philippines, where you can purchase loose furniture or customized pieces. It all depends on your budget. Ours was a tight one. I didn't want to spend more than Php 25K for a 3 seater sofa. After visiting numerous shops, I had friends most of whom are also in the Interior Design and Architecture industry recommending Mandaue Foam

Re-upholstery of an existing sofa is also another budget friendly route.

4. Functionality

Do you have kids at home? Fabric may pose a maintenance problem with those watercolor smeared hands of theirs. Leather is more durable and easy to handle with kiddos around. There are outdoor fabric available nowadays that resists stains. Tufting will definitely store biscuit crumbs. A solid frame for occasional jumping on the sofa makes it sturdy.

5. Style

What's your home style? Modern, Contemporary, Traditional, Eclectic?

It takes commitment and boldness to go for a floral or striped sofa.

I always choose plain neutral toned sofa with subtle fabric patterns for clients. I often play with the fabric texture and material such as suede, velvet etc.

I can always add color and patterns to liven it up with decorative throws and pillows. In this way, I can replace the sofa later on should the color and style fade. It's easier to buy new pillows for a look upgrade.

Fabric Selection : There were plenty of styles to choose from at Mandaue Foam. Good news is, they have numerous fabric samples.

Selecting the right foot for your sofa.

I wanted the 2 x 4 x 4 Bunfoot but it's already discontinued. So I selected the plastic leg 204. I wanted a solid base that is not too high and it fits the Lindsay Sofa perfectly.

Confirmation and Delivery:

The sofa was priced at Php 17,500 which is a good deal! I bought a lifetime discount card from them to avail a 10% discount.

I confirmed the quotation with their customer service while giving them a sketch of the location map.

Customization normally takes 1 month and there's an additional delivery fee because we live 60 kilometers away from the city. However, to our surprise, it was delivered between 2 to 3 weeks upon placement of the order. It was properly packed and it arrived at home without any hassle.

Balance.

I like mixing different shapes balancing sharp corners and rectangular accessories such as books with round objects. I also like combining different elements together such as "metal, wood, earth, fire, etc."

Select items scrupulously.

I didn't break the bank to get these items. You can begin with accessories that already exist in your home. Something dear to you. However, don't over do it or it'll result to clutter.

If you do shop for accessories, select something that reflects what you love and your interests. This meditation bowl for example is a souvenir my husband bought during his trip to Nepal. It's also a conversation starter. Guests are often fascinated with this singing bowl which produces a vibrating sound with the friction of the mallet.

Choose timeless pieces.

Avoid buying something because it's a trend. It may lose its luster after some time unless it's something you know you will always enjoy.

Inspired Design Fridays: Ceiling Feature Made of Bilao

Bilao is a flat round shaped woven tray or winnowing basket used in removing husks of rice grains by tossing and turning them. Bilao is pretty much found in every traditional Filipino kitchen.

I was rather impressed to find a vaulted column and ceiling cleverly made of bilao in Kan-Anan Restaurant in Robinsons Galleria Cebu. Now that's a show stopping ceiling feature!

Moonjogger Arts Supplies Co. is definitely an artists' haven. It first opened in November 2015. I must say I can spend hours here especially when there's a coffee shop below it.

You see, it took me quite some time to find artist grade oil painting materials in Cebu City. The truth is, I just didn't know where to look. The best way is to catch hold of a fine arts student to ask where they get their materials from, but being new and all, I found google to be my first resource. I found the name Moonjogger Arts Supplies Co. from an old forum discussion. Imagine my giddy relief when I found their Facebook Page.

I am presently decorating our new home in Cebu, Philippines. One of the most daunting things when moving to a new location is the lack of awareness on where to find the furniture that fits your style and budget.

I was on the hunt for companies that offer good quality but inexpensive furniture with customization capabilities within a reasonable time frame.

PROJEKT opened in 2008. It is a home furnishing & accessories store carrying knocked down, easy to assemble furniture, while offering home solutions. I first came across Projekt online, via their facebook page

Curiosity led me to drive to the city the next day. I immediately fell in love with their quaint but stylish shop at the second level of Banilad Town Centre.

I discussed my requirements with Rhey, their in-house designer during my second visit. I definitely appreciated the prompt responses by phone and email, as well as proactive solutions he had provided for a customized TV cabinet I wanted. I love Teak wood and I am impressed and proud to share that these furniture are made in the Philippines!

A friend from Dubai recently moved to Las Vegas. She is in the process of setting up their nest. The perks of working with her on this project is the vast resources of furniture and decor available in the United States. There are plenty of styles to choose from with varied price range, suitable to her budget. I may not be physically present to purchase them myself for her, much as I would love to fly there right now to be completely hands on, but this mood board shopping guide will help her source the items at her own pace and schedule.

Cubist Cafe

If you're a coffee and design addict looking for a sheer cubist experience, head over to Grand Cafe Orient in Prague's Old Town. Originally designed by Josef Gocar, one of the founders of Czech Cubism movement in 1912. Everything in the interior from wall covering, lighting, furniture, down to the last detail of coat hooks clearly have cubist style.

Grand Cafe Orient sits on the first floor of House of the Black Madonna, it was recreated based on its original design as seen on old photographs and remaining surviving plans and was re-opened in 2005.

The ground floor features a boutique-like gallery showcasing various cubism designed furniture, artwork, accessories and souvenirs.

Experience: I ended up enjoying a lunch of salad here alone with a gorgeous cup of coffee after my meal. One couldn't help snapping away because of its distinctly unique style.

I'm Back!

Whoa! That was a really looooong design blogging hiatus. As you well know, I have been more active in my travel blog, Travel Gourmande. Lately, I've been starting to get busy with Interior Design, a passion that will be converted progressively to a business venture. From Dubai, I have moved to the Philippines with a long stopover in France last year. 2016 marks a good beginning for a lot of projects and opportunities here in the tropical islands.

Hence, I'm resurrecting Design Gourmande and would like to start documenting my design journey here, since this was where it all began.

Here's a custom lighting feature by Artemide taken at the boarding lounge of Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Often, it pays to look up at the ceiling from time to time.

Home Outfitters is a very interesting shop to purchase unique furniture and accessories. The white washed brick interiors and lovely vignettes stand out and are refreshing to find in Dubai. Especially if you have grown tired of the usually massive and overly ornamented furniture offered by others. Their furniture proportions vary and they have selections of sofa that would suit small spaces.

I have always wanted to visit. I see it all the time on my drive home. The exterior stands out in a subtle and stylish way and you can immediately tell their products will speak the same. It is the only showroom they have in Dubai so far. If you're coming from Sheikh Zayed Road, it is located along Umm Suqeim Road, Al Barsha-2. It is on your right,just before reaching Al Khail Road.

Inspiring Kitchens

A Love Nest

Converting a tiny apartment along Sheikh Zayed Road with a great view into a cozy love nest became an easy task for Chris and Christine. I started decorating their 1 bedroom flat in Business Bay at the beginning of the year. We purchased furniture and selected fabric for the curtains which they had custom made.

Living Area

Due to some problems and inconveniences in their apartment, they found another flat in a more ideal location just walking distance from Chris' work and very easy access to Christine's as well.

It was a copy paste of sorts, which was very practical especially for expats in a cosmopolitan city like Dubai,who frequently move. As an expat, we tend to have a nomad mentality but Chris and Christine wanted to create a "cozy home" where they can relax at the end of the day.

Here's how we did it..

We had very limited budget and in order to achieve this, we:

made sure to purchase well proportioned furniture size and neutral material selections. Flexible furniture that can be re-positioned. We bought the Visalund Sofa Bed from IKEA with Vejmon coffee table in black-brown.
chose fabric for the curtains along with the rods from Dragon Mart and the previous sizes fortunately fit the new apartment.
had a great steal which was a discounted lush Silk Rug from Merinos
used some furniture pieces and accessories from her previous apartment which were purchases from The One warehouse at Dubai Outlet Mall.

She downsized a bit and let go of some furniture that didn't fit the new apartment to avoid clutter and keep her home calm and welcoming. Be not afraid to say goodbye to some pieces that will not be useful in the new space.

Speaking of which, It's a great idea to spring clean before the New Year. Wishing you all happy holidays ahead!

Greetings everyone! I have been absent for quite some time. Given my previous months working on hospitality design projects, meeting deadlines, giving birth to a lovely baby girl and being a new Mum, I have neglected this small space for a while. I am now aiming to start personal interior design work from home and be more active blogging, so watch this space.

Work Desk Behind a Sofa

Planning on re-decorating your space this year? When blessed with a deep rectangular living area, sometimes we wonder how to fill up that space behind the sofa. Especially, when the TV screen is on the opposite wall.

Remember, there's a maximum distance that needs to be considered to properly view the TV depending on the size of your LCD/LED screen. For instance, the sofa should not be more than 11 feet / 3.35 meters away from a 32" screen. If you have 42'' TV, maximum distance should be less than 15 feet / 4.57 meters.

Placing a work desk is an ideal way to utilize that empty nook behind your sofa. This arrangement allows openness and direct view of the TV as well. I have always hated working on a desk facing a wall. The best scenario of course for a private work desk requiring quiet contemplation is to face a window with a great view or positioned right at the center of the room surrounded by inspiring pieces to spark creativity. However, for those who would like to check their emails quickly while not wanting to miss their favorite program, this layout works best.

Sneak Peek: Decorating a Love Nest

A labor of love. I'm helping out dear friends, a newly wed couple decorate their honeymoon nest in Business Bay. This weekend was spent furniture shopping, paint and curtain purchasing and selecting materials for their new one bedroom home. Keeping the budget in mind, we hunted bargains at Dragon Mart and IKEA while taking advantage of the Dubai Shopping Festival sales.

Believe me, I did not notice the time, I got so carried away by the fun of it all that I briefly forgot I was pregnant while meandering through the maze-like shops of Dragon Mart.

My ulterior motive for offering them a free service is to practice my craft and reconnecting with my love for home design.

Leek & Bacon Quiche

Today is a religious holiday in the UAE so we are enjoying a much longer weekend. A rainy weather after a sumptuous Beef Bourguignon and Rosemary Roasted Potatoes - Recipes by Ina Garten for lunch, I decided to treat the hubby to my own recipe of Leek Quiche with Bacon for dinner.

Leek & Bacon Quiche
Quiche Aux Poireaux et Lardons

Servings: 8

Ingredients:

Une pâte brisée / 1 pie crust pastry on a baking sheet

3 eggs

1 cup of Crème Fraîche

200 grams of lardons / bacon

Muscade / a pinch of grated nutmeg

Salt

Ground Black Pepper

1 1/2 teaspoon of butter
2 Leek stalks, white part only, washed and sliced
1 pot of boiling water with salt and pepper (for the leeks)

Optional: Grated Emmental cheese /Swiss/ Gruyere

Preparation:

1. Pre-heat oven to 190 deg C or 375 F. Set the pie crust on the baking dish and puncture with a fork. Allow to bake for a few minutes until the dough slightly dries and take it out of the oven.

2. In a covered saucepan with boiling water over moderately high heat with salt and pepper, boil the leeks until they become very tender.

3. In a separate pan, saute lardon/ bacon until slightly golden.

4. Grate nutmeg.

5. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl. Add in the cream, lardons along with its juices, nutmeg, butter, salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly.

6. Add the leek on your pie crust and pour the mixture on top. Optional: Sprinkle grated cheese. Leave it in the oven for about 30-35 minutes until it rises.

The original french quiche doesn't have cheese. I like it with though. Since I wanted to enjoy the weekend more and was feeling lazy, I've decided not to make the pie crust dough from scratch. This quiche is also the husband's favorite so he's pretty excited when it's going to be done.

Et voila! Serve with a Vinaigrette Salad and indulge with a glass of wine.

Bedroom of the Week

Eversince I started working in a hospitality design firm, my attention automatically zooms in to details every time I enter a room. This growing fascination for materials and spaces seem to consume most of my thoughts and even those expected idle minutes of the day are spent browsing through design magazines and reading design articles, hence my absence on the blog.

Nobu Deluxe King

I found this guestroom design of The Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and was captivated by the artful rhythm of the materials in the carpet design, graphic wall artwork, wood finish, fabric and accessories. The Nobu Hotel and Restaurant was designed by David Rockwell. Partners, Chef Nobu and Robert de Niro worked closely with him in achieving both of their vision by their involvement in the selection of design elements.

Custom 'Shodo' style calligraphy is the main focal point of the guest room feature wall. Art by up-and coming Japanese artists can also be seen in some of the rooms. The simplicity of the natural materials from the stone tiles to the teak furniture emanate comfort and tranquility throughout the rooms.

Easy French Tuna & Potato Quiche

A culinary break from all the land hunting stories. Segue..I have been enjoying belly dancing and zumba classes for the last few months. Even when I was in the Philippines, I joined a zumba class held at a gym-converted garage a few blocks away from home with a really cool and friendly group. I walked most mornings to get there. For tonight's dinner, after a really strenuous workout, I'd love a fresh quiche with greens. I got this recipe from my husband and I jazzed it up a little bit. Here goes:

Easy French Tuna & Potato Quiche

Ingredients:

1 pack of Pâte brisée / ready-made short crust pastry dough
1 can of tuna in brine, drained.
3 Large eggs
1 cup Crème Fraîche / heavy cream
3 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tbsp chopped parsley
1/2 cup chopped onions / shallots
2 tsp. Dijon Mustard
1 medium sized potato boiled
1 cup Emmental / Gruyere Cheese
Salt
Fresh ground pepper

Tools:

Mixing Bowl
Pie Baking Dish
Fork, Spoon
Scissors (to cut the parchment attached to the pie crust following the outline of the baking dish)

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 350 Degrees F / 180 Degrees C

Set the pie crust on a baking dish and puncture with a fork. Allow to bake for a few minutes until the dough slightly dries and take it out of the oven.
Boil potato in salted water until tender and mash. (I'm re-using a left over baked potato.)

Beat the eggs and the cream together in a mixing bowl. Season with salt (be generous) and grind pepper. Add the mustard, shallots/onions, parsley, and lemon juice to the mixture.

Evenly spread the drained tuna and potato on the pie crust and sprinkle 1/2 cup grated cheese.

On top of the filling, slowly pour in the cream mixture and make sure they're even and top it with the remaining cheese.
Bake for 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Serve with a salad in vinaigrette dressing.
