loved or hated Oprah. Some might argue that in 10th grade when I
referred to her as Oger, I hated her. I've always kinda liked her. I
think Oprah has found her place in the world. When did the big O get
so wise? This show makes me feel warm and fuzzy, happy and sad, crazy
and sane.

the Pollo Tropical drive-thru the other night, placed my order, drove
up to the window said "hello" to the girl manning the booth, and she
responded "oh my god, it's the dog that sits funny!!!" Then a bunch of
her co-workers ran to the window, oooo-ing and awww-ing over him like
Justin Bieber.

Eggplant Gratin

My boss has been giving me eggplants from her garden, so i have been coming up with ways to serve it. here's the latest, it was delicious!

Eggplant Gratin - (Recipe inspired by Ina Garten)

Ingredients:

Good olive oil, for frying
3/4 pound eggplant, unpeeled, sliced 1/2-inch thick
1/4 cup ricotta cheese
1 extra-large egg
1/4 cup half-and-half
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup good bottled marinara sauce

Directions:

Open a bottle of wine, cooking is much more enjoyable with a glass of wine. ;)

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Heat about 1/8-inch of olive oil in a very large frying pan over medium heat. When the oil is almost smoking, add several slices of eggplant and cook, turning once, until they are evenly browned on both sides and cooked through, about 5 minutes.

Transfer the cooked eggplant slices to paper towels to drain. Add more oil, heat, and add more eggplant until all the slices are cooked.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together the ricotta, egg, half-and-half, 1/4 cup of the Parmesan, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper.

In each of 2 individual gratin dishes, place a layer of eggplant slices, then sprinkle with Parmesan, salt and pepper and spoon 1/2 of the marinara sauce.

Next, add a second layer of eggplant, more salt and pepper, half the ricotta mixture, and finally 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan on top.

Place the gratins on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the custard sets and the top is browned.

Serve Warm

Valley: I went to my car Friday morning to find the door open and the inside ransacked. Nothing was stolen, but all my "stuff" was tossed around and out of place. It as a little freaky. We live in a "safe" neighborhood and I have never had anything like this happen to me before. Really, almost everyone I know has at some point in their life (in Miami) had their car broken in to or stolen! I have been pretty lucky, I guess. I take partial blame. I must have left the door unlocked. That is unlike me, but there was no damage to the car. I think it would be impossible for them to have "broken in" without causing damage. If you leave opportunities for thieves, they will take them. Anyway, that sucked.

Mountain: That same morning i noticed that some seeds I planted less than a week earlier had sprouted! I planted cucumber, tomato, green onion, mixed peppers and basil seeds and look at this!!! A cucumber sprout! YAY! i was lifted and almost didn't care about the "break in". I am TRYING to grow my own veggies, have never done more than herbs in the past, so imagine my excitement!!!

So I'm at work, and I walk into the kitchen to get a snack. But there is a dude in the kitchen. An accountant. I don't like to prepare my food when someone is in there, they always gawk and want to discuss what I am eating and it irks me. I know that is kind of weird in itself, but it's the way it is.

So I pretend I was just coming to get a glass of water and plan on coming back when he is done. Maybe he doesn't want ME gawking?

I say "good morning"; he says "good morning"; he says the obligatory "how are you"; i say "good." Then in an effort to not just do the obligatory "hi, how are you? good and you?" routine, I add: "but cold!" (rubbing my frozen hands together) "It's always so chilly in this office in the morning!", I continue. AND HE SAYS "Maybe because it's chilly outside?" It's not what he said, it's how he said it. Like I'm a moron. bewildered by his tone, i just say, "Yeah maybe" and then, because I always have to be right, and I usually have to have the last word, I add "but it's even cold in this office in the middle of the summer." then i let the door hit me in the ass on my way out.

But what i really wanted to say was, I AM ONLY TALKING TO YOU OUT OF FUCKING COURTESY, I REALLY HAVE NOTHING TO SAY TO YOU AT ALL YOU CONDESCENDING FUCK.

Little Italy 2009

After a few years of total abuse, my cell phone FINALLY kicked the bucket and i got a new one. I was able to transfer photos from the old one to the new one and some photos showed up that i didnt even remember existing. I think i will share a few with you here, just for the heck of it.
