Create Recovery Drive for Windows 8, Life Saver When Your Laptop Break.

A Recovery drive is essential for Windows 8.1 users as the upgraded users fromWindows 8 won’t be having the installation media in case of any failures or hard disc changes. Open Control Panel. There we can see the Recovery link. Click on that one and the recovery window will appear. Also you can come to this screen from file history window too. In the bottom of the File History window, you can see the Recovery link which is directing to the same target window on top of the System Image Backup .

Now Click on the “Create Recovery Drive” link. Allow the program to make changes in your system. In the Recovery Drive Window, it describes the purpose of the recovery drive. Insert a blank USB drive to start with. If any data is available, it will be erased during the process. After inserting the USB drive, Click on “Next” to continue.

Now it will search for the connected USB drive. If it is not inserted already or any problems in detecting the drive, it will prompt here further.

Once it discovered the USB drive, it will show the selected drive for the recovery disc creation startup. Click on “Next” to continue.

Now it will prompt you a warning message about the deletion of the data in the selected drive. Now to start the recovery disc creation, click on “Create” and the recovery disc will be created in the given USB drive.

First, it will format the USB drive and then it will copy the necessary files and utilities for running the recovery set up automatically. After completion, it will give a chance to click the “Finish” button to end the procedure or program.

Now you are having a USB recovery drive which can be used to start up yourcomputer, if any problems occur. The other important usage of this is when you are changing or upgrading your hard disk. After installing the new hard disk you can restore the Windows 8.1 to the working condition using this USB drive and the System Image Backup media. This is a simple trick to see and print any year calendar from MAC’s text editor. It is easy to search and see any month or year calendar in MAC terminal with a single command. This trick saves lot of time if you are searching for an old date or day from your MAC.

If you want to print this calendar, you can export to MAC text editor and you can do that. Please open your terminal and type

cal 2000

to bring up year 2000 calendar. See here syntax for the cal command.

Cal : Current Month Calendar

Cal year : Particular year calendar (eg: cal 2000)

Cal month year : Calendar of the month (1-12) and year (1-9999)

If you want to export this calendar to TextEdit and print from there, please add

| open –f

with the cal command. See the example below.

cal 2050 | open -f

You can see the full calendar of the year 2050 from the above screen shot. The

| open –f

command outputs the terminal calendar to Text Editor and you can print from there like a regular text document.

Add iCS Calendar by Email:

This is the easiest solution to add the calendar. Copy the iCS link from the site and paste in your email body and send the email that can open for your iOS device that you plan to add calendar.

Here we add the link in our email body for US calendar and send to iPhone.

Open the email in your iPhone, and click on this link. Now you will get a popup window to subscribe the calendar. You will get a confirmation message once you subscribe calendar.

The alternative method is manually type the calendar link on your iPhone. To add calendar manually,

Open Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > select Other from List

Please select Add Subscribed Calendar under CALENDARS. Please type the ics link as the server location.

Server: ical.mac.com/ical/US32Holidays.ics

You can change the description and no need for username and password in this case. Just type server and Description window. Follow the instructions until you get conformation screen.

Once you are done, you can see the subscribed calendar with other calendars. You can change the calendar color to separate from other personal calendars. If you already subscribed this calendar through your MAC and iCloud calendar, that calendar will automatically will be in your iOS device calendar.

How to Setup Auto Vacation Response on MAC Mail and Microsoft Outlook

You know how to setup auto vacation response in Microsoft Outlook. But if you are using your Microsoft Outlook or MAC Mail with your personal email, there is no default setup for the auto response emails. You have to create rules to setup the auto vacation reply emails.

This post describes to steps to setup the Auto Response Email for MAC Mail or Microsoft Outlook email client with IMAP, POP or any other personal Emailaccount.

Setup Vacation Response in Outlook 2010 and 2013:

If you are using any exchange account in your Microsoft outlook, then it is easy to set the vacation reply. Click on File -> Info -> Automatic Replies -> Select Send Automatic Replies.

You can specify the date range, and in the message there is two option for Inside my organization and Outside my organization.

Setup Vacation Response in Outlook with POP3, IMAP accounts

If you are using Microsoft outlook 2010 with your GMail, Yahoo or any other IMPA, POP accounts please follow these steps. Please create a message template before setup the automatic reply. Goto Home -> New group then click New E-mail. Type the auto response message in message body and save as the message as Outlook Template (*.oft) with a required file name. Now you create a message template.

Now you have to create rule to set the auto reply. Go to Home tab and click rules from Move group. Click on Manage Rules & Alerts and select New Rule. Start from the clank rule, click Apply rules on messages I receive and click Next.

Under Which condition(s), you don’t need to select any items. Next window select the reply using a specific template check box. Edit the rule description to click a specific template. From the Reply Template dialog box, click User Templates in File System. Now please select the template that you created and click Open. Follow the instructions and finally add name to your rule like Vacation Auto Response and click Finish.

This rule setting will send your automated reply only one time to each sender during a single session. Please turn off this rule once you want to stop auto response from Home -> Move Group -> Rules -> Manage Rules & Alerts.

Setup Vacation Response in MAC Mail:

Please go to MAC Mail -> Preferences. On the Preference window click on Rulestab to start. Click on Add Rules and give a description such as Vacation Auto Response. Select all in If filed and on the next pull down menu select Every Message. Under Perform the following Actions, Select reply to Messages from the pull down menu and click on Reply message text to add your custom auto response message.

There is one important step in the next screen when you click on Finish button. Mail will ask to apply the rule to all the messages in selected mailboxes. Click Don’t Apply.

If you chose Apply the automatic reply will send in response to every existing email in your account. This auto reply rule will be active by default now, you can stop it by activating the rules by visiting the Mail -> Preference -> Rules.

Transfer Files between PC and MAC through Network:

Step 1: Enable the file sharing Windows machine. This process is different depending on different version of Windows.

Windows XP: Control Panel > double click Network Setup Wizard and run it.
Windows Vista: Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Expand the File Sharing drop down > click on “Turn on File and Printer Sharing”
Windows 7: Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Choose Homegroup and Sharing options > Change Advanced Sharing Settings > click “Turn on File and Printer Sharing”.

Step 2: Connect MAC to Windows machine:

If you follow all the setting on Windows machine properly and both machines are on same network, then when you open the Finder window on MAC, on the left pane under the “Shared” you can see shared machines. Select the name of the windows machine and click to open up the folder. You can drag and drop files into this folder to share between MAC and Windows.

If you are unable to see the Windows machine on MAC finder, then Click on Finder > Go > Connect to Server (Command+K). Type in the prefix smb:// followed by the ip address or hostname of the windows machine. (like smb://192.168.1.101 or smb://windowspc )

Transfer Files between PC and MAC by Email:

Email file transfer doesn’t need any additional setup or knowledge. Send the emailattachment from one machine and open the email in second machine and download the attached file. Emails are capable to attach the the files in GBs. Please see How to email LARGE file attachment? for more details.

Transfer Files between PC and MAC using Disks:

Flash drives are available in the range of 16GB to 256GB for a very cheap price. Please see list of flash drives from Amazon. Even if you are using USB Flash Drive or Hard Drive, please make sure your Hard disk or Flash drive formatted to FAT32 to get access for both MAC and Windows OS system. Two drawbacks on this format is that FAT32 supports maximum file size into 4GB and FAT 32 format is more susceptible to disk errors and offers no security. We strongly recommend this method only for temporary purpose. The hard disks are available in the market that offers compatibility with both OS with some additional software.

All these operating system mentioned here are capable to run under 1GB RAM and low CPU speed. Most of them can load to USB stick and run from it instead of installing in your hard disk.

Slax: Slax is a Live operating system based on Linux runs from an external media without any need for permanent installation. Entire Slax operating system resides in a single directory /slax/ on your device, making it easier to organize with your other data.

Slax is available for 32bit and 64bit processor architectures. The 32bit version is designed to run on very old computers (as old as Intel 486; that dates back to 1989). It will run properly on brand new computers too, but it is limited in the amount of RAM it can see and limited to 3GB of RAM maximum. The 64bit version has no such limits, but will not run on computers older than a few years. If you plan to use Slax on very old computer, or you seek for a system with maximum possible compatibility, then choose 32bit. If your intention is to use Slax on brand new machine, you’ll better go for 64bit.

Oleg Kostour moved from Canada to Mountain View to build a 3D software startup. Instead, he built an app to stay in touch with the girlfriend he left behind in Canada.

The iPhone app, Pair, launched in the app store this week. It creates a private shared timeline for couples that allows them to easily swap SMS messages, photos, videos and locations.

“We thought, if we’re so disconnected, how can we use our mobile devices to feel a little bit closer, to feel like we can touch each other?” Kostour says.

The app includes a feature called “thumb kiss” that vibrates when both parties touch the same spot on the screen. Couples can also co-create drawings, maintain a joint to-do list and send a “thinking of you” message that works like a more thoughtful Facebook poke.

Pair takes the concept behind Path a step further. Instead of sharing personal updates within a small network, it’s a way to stay constantly connected with the smallest of networks — one other person.

To start using the app, you need to send someone with an iPhone (the Android version is coming soon) a request to be your “pair” on it. Creating multiple pairs isn’t allowed, though it’s easy to unpair and re-pair.

Three of the five men who helped create Pair are in long-distance relationships, but Kostour says that any pair of close friends could use the app to stay in touch throughout the day. Eventually, the startup plans to sell premium games or other activities they can use in the app.

A few Pair activities — or even the concept of keeping an app solely for interacting with one person — might strike some as more nauseating than sweet. But there’s a case to be made that the app is just what the increasing number of young long-distance couples could use.

Instead of juggling Skype dates, phone calls and text messages, the app provides one portal for communication.

How to install Mac OS X Lion Theme in Ubuntu 11.10/12.04

In earlier versions of Ubuntu, actually up to 10.10, a Mac OS X transformation pack was available for Ubuntu users (based on GTK 2.*) but now the Ubuntu 11.10 (the latest stable version) or 12.04 LTS (only alpha versions are available right now) as well as other Ubuntu derivatives such as Linux Mint, are based on GTK 3 – so the transformation pack doesn’t work anymore. Both of the desktop – Unity (The default interface in 11.10) and Gnome 3 shell are quite popular. I’ve already covered a post about getting a Mac like look in Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome shell desktop so this article is about Unity desktop.

If you want to make Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 look like Mac OS X Lion, then you need to install few basic things -

GTK Theme
Icon Theme
Cursor Theme
Gnome Tweak Tool (To manage themes)
A dock application (Docky or Cairo Dock)

A cool snapshot – exploring Cairo Dock effects (using OpenGL, although you may choose to ‘no OpenGL’ version of Cairo Dock if the graphics performance of your computer is poor), of my desktop after install above stuffs :

Installing Mac Theme by ‘MBoss’ Packages

First of all – download the theme package (it contains theme, icons and cursors) and extract it to appropriate locations as specified -

1. Download Mac OS X GTK Theme package and extract it to ~/.themes

2. Download the Mac OS X Icon theme and extract it to ~/.icons (create that directory if it doesn’t exist)

3. Download Mac OS X Cursor Icon theme and extract it to /usr/share/icons

For extracting cursor icons to usr/share/icons location, you need root access while browsing with nautilus

gksu nautilus

and finally you may need to change the permission settings to make it accessible also by a non root user. (By default it may be assigned root permission only).

Install Docky or Cairo

If you like Docky then install it from Ubuntu Software Center or execute (as it’s there in repository by default) -

sudo apt-get install docky

On the other hand – if you want to try Cairo Dock (as seen in screenshot) then execute these commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cairo-dock-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins

Gnome Tweak Tool is very handy for changing themes or tweaking other settings of Desktop so If you haven’t already installed it Gnome Tweak Tool then install it by executing the command -

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

Now, open Gnome Tweak Tool and select Mac_OS_X_Lion_Theme - as indicated in above snapshot. Then, start Cairo Dock or Docky whatever you have installed. That’s all I hope you are enjoying the cool look of Mac on your Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 computer. Have Fun – let me know if any problem occurs.

Besides Gnome Tweak Tool, you could also use ‘Ubuntu Tweak‘ – a small application to tweak/customize desktop in easy way.

To install Ubuntu Tweak, execute the following commands -

After Downloading the theme package, you must download some dependentpackages/themes/icons.
Then open a terminal and execute the command to open nautilus in root mode -

Then extract the theme file (archive) and copy all the themes directory tousr/share/themes and for icons – usr/share/icons. Roman Andreev from Russia wins Facebook Hacker Cup by only one minute

The Hacker Cup kicked off at around 10am this morning at Facebook’s office in Menlo Park and lasted for three hours. The best of the best programmers from around the world competed by taking a stab at three separate problems.

As we noted earlier, not one competitor finished all three problems last year and the same rang true this year. Based on speed and accuracy, the winner completed one problem only 1 minute faster than the second place contestant.

Roman Andreev won the Hacker Cup and gets his name placed on this awesome (and really heavy) cement trophy along with a check for $5,000:

1st place: Roman Andreev from Russia, completed one problem correctly in 1 hr 4 min
2nd place: Tomek Czajka from the US, completed one problem correctly in 1 hr 5 min
