Не могу сказать, что я люблю музыку Щедрина, но для меня он человек, написавший "Запечатленного ангела". Никогда не забуду, как мы пели его на уроках сольфеджио. Это тот самый случай, когда накладываешь на себя немыслимые ограничения стиля, который, казалось бы, уже окостенел за свои века, и сначала кажется, что любой шаг в сторону разрушит целое. Но потом ты живешь этим какое-то время и вдруг обнаруживаешь, что не только остался столь же свободен, как раньше, но и приобрел какую-то новую степень свободы - что-то вроде крыльев... И, конечно, очень правильно, что у нас сложилась традиция играть Щедрина зимой - юбилеи юбилеями, но у Щедрина действительно поразительно морозоустойчивая музыка, и мне не найти для нее более точного слова.
I can't say that I love Shchedrin's music, but for me he is the man who wrote "The Sealed Angel". I will never forget as we sang it on solfeggio. This is the case when you apply restriction of style to your music. That style seems to be almost dead, it's so old and stiff. And you feel that every wrong step will ruin the whole. But then you live in it for a while and suddenly discover that you are not only remain as free as before, but moreover gained a new dimension of freedom, something like the wings... And, of course, quite right that we have a tradition of playing Shchedrin in winter. It's not only because of Shchedrin's anniversaries, but Shchedrin's music is truly astounding freezeproof, and I can't find a better word to describe his music.

Сейчас, как мне кажется, пришло время пересмотреть взгляды на классику и попытаться взглянуть на неё под другим углом. Как правило, переложения считаются чёрной работой, позволяющей разным музыкантам играть вещи, которые изначально не были написаны для их инструментов. Но, помимо чисто практической цели, такой способ может помочь услышать в музыке что-то, что было пропущено ранее, изучить её с новой стороны. Мне бы очень хотелось, к примеру, услышать последнюю фортепианную сонату Шуберта в исполнении духового оркестра - мне кажется, это бы прекрасно и очень современно звучало. Или другой вариант - исполнить по очереди все инструментальные партии какой-нибудь симфонии Гайдна, а потом соединить все вместе. Сегодня мы послушаем 2-ю симфонию Бетховена в двух вариантах - в оригинале и в авторском переложении для скрипки, виолончели и фортепиано.

Or other variant - to perform one by one all instrumental parts of one of Haydn symphonies and then join them together. Today we will hear the 2nd Symphony of Beethoven in two versions - the original and the composer's arrangement for violin, cello and piano.

Мы снова в эфире. В этом году со мною случился Gentle Giant, и можно с уверенностью сказать, что уже лет 10 ни одна группа не затрагивала меня так сильно. Всё их творчество аккуратно укладывается в 70-е годы, за которые они успели создать совершенно уникальную звуковую вселенную. Я давно искал музыку, где классические традиции развития материала воплощены в рок-музыке, но уже почти отчаялся искать - настолько плоско и примитивно это реализовывалось там, где было обещано. И вдруг я натыкаюсь на, оказывается, легендарную группу, основоположника progressive rock, где сложнейшие гармонии, изысканное многоголосие и многочастные формы неразрывно соединены с самым главным - поразительным талантом и драйвом. В итоге вот уже полгода я не могу оторваться от этой музыки.
We're starting again. "Gentle Giant" happened to me this year. And it's safe to say that that even 10 years no one group does not affect me so much. All their work fits neatly in 70th when they had managed to create a very unique sound universe. I was looking for music where the classical traditions of musical evolution embodied in rock music, but almost stopped to search, so flat and primitive it was realized where it was promised. And then I come across the legendary group, the founder of progressive rock, where a complex harmony, exquisite polyphony and multipart forms are inextricably linked to the amazing talent and drive. Бывают звуки, достигающие столь редкого чувства гармонии, что с ними не хочется ничего делать, не хочется развивать, менять, продолжать, а только повторять снова и снова без изменений. Я обычно терпеть не могу повторы в музыке, но есть исключения из этого правила, когда столь свойственная популярной музыке тяга к точным повторам находит в душе благодарный отклик. У Joni Mitchell великое множество песен, и большинство из них прекрасны, но такая, где ни одной лишней ноты, где всё замерло в мистическом совершенстве, песня, которую хочется слушать бесконечно, только одна.

There are sounds that reach such a rare sense of harmony, that you do not want to do anything with them, you do not want to develop, modify, continue them, but just listen again and again without any changes. I usually hate repetition in music, but there are exceptions, when a propensity to exact reiteration in the popular music finds a grateful response in the soul . Joni Mitchell has a great amount of songs, and most of them are beautiful, but the only one where not a single superfluous note, where everything stood still in the mystical perfection, a song that you want to listen to endlessly.

История музыки в 20-дисковом юбилейном издании крупнейшего лейбла классической музыки Harmonia Mundi начинается с нескольких записей древнегреческой музыки. От древних греков нам остались лишь несколько обрывков, и наличие стольких полноценных треков не могло не вызвать изумления. Оказалось, что это всё же современная попытка реконструкции того, как древнегреческая музыка могла бы звучать, исходя из всей имеющейся у нас информации о древнегреческой теории музыки, инструментах и традициях. К примеру, в данной композиции использован кропотливо воссозданный барбитос - басовый вариант лиры, отличающийся более чувственным дионисийским началом. Помимо того, что в результате получилась прекрасная музыка, мне это интересно как новый подход к композиции - ведь всё же это музыка, написанная нашими современниками.
The history of music in the anniversary edition of the largest classical music label Harmonia Mundi on 20 CDs begins with a few records of ancient Greek music. We have only a 3-4 fragments of ancient Greek music, so the existence of so many full tracks sounds amazing. It turned out that this is still a modern attempt to reconstruct how the ancient Greek music might sound, based on all the information we have about ancient Greek music theory, instruments and traditions. For example, this composition is used painstakingly recreated barbitos - bass version of the lyre, featuring a more sensual Dionysian principle. Besides the fact that as the result we have such beautiful music, it's interesting to me as a new approach to composition, because in fact it is still music written by our contemporaries.

Большое искусство, мне кажется, всегда гораздо дальше и выше всех политических событий вместе взятых - где-то там же, где небесные светила и гармония мира. "Художник Матис" - одна из любимейших моих симфоний, заученная в юности почти наизусть.

Почему-то мне показалось важным вспомнить сейчас эту музыку. Мясковский всегда кажется чуть старомодным, слишком аристократичным рудиментом уничтоженной России, но я глубоко убежден, что эта музыка еще очень надолго переживет всех нас. В начале финала цитируются различные бодрые революционные песни, а отвечает им трагическая колыбельная по погибшим. В конце к ней присоединяется хор со словами духовного стиха "Как душа с телом расставалася":
Что мы видели?
Диву дивную,
Диву дивную --
Телу мёртвую.
Как душа-то с телом
Расставалася,
Расставалася
Да прощалася.
Как тебе-то, душа,
На суд Божий идить;
А тебе-то, тело,
Во сыру мать землю.
For some reason it seemed to me important to remember now this music. Myaskovsky always seems a bit old-fashioned, too aristocratic vestige of destroyed old Russia, but I am deeply convinced that this music will outlive us all for a very long time. At the beginning of the final quoted various cheerful revolutionary songs, and then a tragic lullaby for the dead replies to them. In the end a choir joins to it with the words of a Russian folk burial hymn, "How the Soul Parted from the Body": "What did we see? A miraculous wonder, a dead body...".

Jorge Arriagada - Soundtrack from "Manoel on the Island of Marvels" (Raoul Ruiz, 1984)

19 августа этого года не стало моего любимого режиссёра Рауля Руиса, урождённого чилийца, эмигрировавшего в Париж от режима Пиночета. В его фильмах нарушается логика этого мира, и освобождённое подсознание приводит к чистой кинопоэзии, и ничем не скованная фантазия рассказывает самые заветные сны, и мне бесконечно странно. Кино Руиса немыслимо без ещё одного человека - композитора Хорхе Арриагада, автора музыки ко всем его фильмам. Сейчас я закончил работу над переводом его лучшего, на мой взгляд, фильма "Мануэль на острове чудес" и предлагаю вам послушать одну из его музыкальных тем. Прошу прощения за качество звука, фильм пока доступен только в виде старой кассетной записи с телевизора в ужасном качестве, как это, увы, бывает почти со всеми труднодобываемыми фильмами Руиса до 90-х.
My favorite film director Raoul Ruiz died this year at 19th August. Born in Chili, he emigrated to Paris in 70th from the Pinochet regime. In his films upsetted the logic of this world, and the freed subconscious causes clean cinema poetry, and not constrained fantasy tells the most cherished dreams, and I feel myself infinitely strange. Movies of Raoul Ruiz are unthinkable without one person - the composer Jorge Arriagada, author of music to all his films. Now I have finished the translation of his best, in my opinion, movie "Manuel on the Island of Marvels" and invite you to listen to one of it's musical themes. Sorry for the sound quality, the film is currently available only in the form of an old tape recording from the TV in a terrible quality as it is, alas, happens with almost all Ruiz's movies.

А теперь внимание, дорогие друзья - у меня открытие, какие бывают в лучшем случае раз в году. Не то чтобы это была неизвестная музыка, но мне вот её раньше слышать не довелось. Это последний из, по собственному выражению композитора, "грехов старости" Россини, написанный незадолго до смерти, когда ему было уже за 70. Это камерное сочинение для узкого круга друзей и ценителей. Казалось бы, почтенная старость, скоро в гроб, месса - всё предельно серьёзно. Но даже сейчас это слушается как дико современный пост-модерн. С самого начала звучит гармошка (гармониум) с нарочито примитивным, опереточным аккомпанементом. Что же это - едкая пародия на мессу? Странное дело - именно в таком парадоксальном сочетании гениальная музыка расцветает с такой силой, что сравнения приходят разве что с Высокой мессой си минор И.С.Баха, лучше которой уже вовсе ничего на свете нет. Это самая что ни на есть серьёзная католическая месса от самого остроумного из композиторов.
And now attention, my dear friends - I have a discovery which happens at best once a year. I cannot say that it's unknown music, no. But I've never heard it before. That's "the last", the composer called it, "of my péchés de vieillesse" (sins of old age), written shortly before his death, when he was over 70. The chamber piece for a narrow circle of friends and connoisseurs. It would seem that the venerable old age, soon in a coffin, Mass - all is extremely seriously. But even now it sounds like a wildly contemporary post-modernism. From the very beginning we've hear the sounds of an accordion (Harmonium) with a deliberately primitive operetta-like accompaniment. What is it - caustic parody of the Mass? Strange thing - just in this paradoxical combination ingenious music flourishes with such force that perhaps only a High Mass in B minor by J.S. Bach comes to comparison, which is already better than anything in the world. So it's a very serious Catholic Mass from the most witty of the composers.

Ксенакис управляет неисчислимыми звуковыми массами с подлинным мастерством архитектора. Иногда он просто переносит чертёж своего здания на нотную бумагу, и получается музыка. Но как далека эта музыка от мертвенности и застылости камня! Кажется, нужно быть таким подлинным противником чувственности и "красоты" в музыке, как Ксенакис, чтобы в 20 веке писать столь красивую и страстную музыку.

Iannis Xenakis rules innumerable sound masses with a true art of the architect. Sometimes he just transfer a draft of his building on music paper and it transforms into music. But how far this music from a lifelessness and ossification of stone! Maybe you're need to be such certain antagonist of "Beauty" and sensuality in music as Xenakis to compose in 20th century such beautiful and passionate music.

Leonid Fyodorov - Melt (2005) - Ben Laden

Возможно, это путь из заколдованного круга СМИ в позицию "над" или "в", но точно не "под". Композитор Владимир Мартынов и ансамбль Opus Posth трансцендируют шаманское бормотание Фёдорова, и волны ненависти смываются (дополняются?) волнами спасительного(?) абсурда. В тексте песни присутствует ненормативная лексика.
Maybe it's a way from the vicious circle of mass media to the position "above" or "into" but definetely not "below". Composer Vladimir Martynov and Opus Posth ensemble transcends Fyodorov's shaman mumbling, and waves of hate are washing down (supplementing?) by waves of salvational(?) absurdity. There are abuse words in this song.

Почему именно эта пьеса стала символом скрипичной музыки, что в ней такого особенного? На протяжении веков было сделано бесчисленное количество переложений Чаконы Баха для самых разных инструментов, а транскрипции для фортепиано стали столь популярны, что исполняются едва ли не чаще оригинала. Быть может, в этом и есть секрет - в одну маленькую скрипку Бах сумел вложить так много драматической силы, что хватило бы на целый оркестр. Что мы сейчас и услышим - сперва нежное и совершенное исполнение скрипичного оригинала молодой немецкой скрипачкой Джулией Фишер, а затем оркестровую транскрипцию великого дирижёра Леопольда Стоковского, сделавшего за свою жизнь очень много знаменитых оркестровых версий самых разных произведений Баха.
Why this piece has become a symbol of violin music, what is so special in it? Over the centuries has been made countless arrangements of Bach's Chaconne for a various instruments, and it's piano transcriptions became so popular that performed almost more often than original. Perhaps this is the secret. In one small violin Bach was able to put so much dramatic power that would be enough for the whole orchestra. And that we'll be listen now - soft and perfect performance of the violin original by young German violinist Julia Fischer at first and then an orchestral transcription by great conductor Leopold Stokowski, who made in his life so many famous orchestral versions of various Bach's works.

Гарри Партч - один из самых чудных композиторов-экспериментаторов 20 века. Он хотел всё иметь своё - свои музыкальные инструменты, свои микротональности, свой 43-ступенный строй, свои жанры. В своём главном, пожалуй, сочинении-ритуале "Бред фурии" он задействовал все свои изобретения, многие из которых можно увидеть на видео. Это очень странный, болезненный, но весьма цельный музыкальный мир, из которого может не захотеться уходить.
Harry Partch is a one of most odd composers-experimenters of 20th century. He wanted to have all own, like his own musical instruments, own microtonal 43-tone tunings, own genres. Есть личности, вокруг которых, как маленькие слушатели захватывающей сказки, собирается в круг хорошая музыка. Я искал "Арлезианку" Бизе, с которой как будто бы сняли пыль времени, открыв забытую свежесть красок. Конечно, я нашёл её только у сэра Джона Элиота Гардинера, едва ли не крупнейшего дирижёра наших дней. Более того, на соседнем диске я нашёл такого Берлиоза, что тоже не могу не поделиться - каждая мелодия обладает какой-то уникальной глубиной и мягкостью, и слушаешь затаив дыхание, не зная, что будет дальше.
There are persons, around which as a little listeners of breathtaking fairytale a good music gathers into a circle. I was looking for "Arlesienne" by Bizet, which seemed to have removed the dust of time, revealing a forgotten freshness of colors. And, of course, I've find it only in the performance of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, maybe the greatest conductor of our times. Moreover, on another CD of this album I found such Berlioz that I can't resist to share: each melody have some unique depth and softness, and you're listening with bated breath not knowing what will be further.

Менестрели, трубадуры, труверы, миннезингеры, скоморохи - разные наименования профессиональных бродячих музыкантов Средневековья. Можно сказать, поп-музыка того времени. В основном это устная традиция, но многое было записано. Ансамбль Персеваль очень напоминает мне группу Dead Can Dance, но находится по другую сторону баррикад между академической и популярной музыкой, относясь всё же к "академикам". Тем не менее, слушая эту музыку (из пьесы "Игра о Робене и Марион" с большим количеством музыки, которую иногда рассматривают как прообраз оперы) трувера 13 века Адама де ла Аля, известного также как Адам Горбатый (был повешен в 1287 году), я удивляюсь, что популярная музыка того времени звучит столь современной. Более того, это, можно сказать, идеальная средневековая музыка. Это то, что, как мне кажется, любой современный человек хотел бы услышать при этом словосочетании, это прямой ответ на простой запрос фантазии о замках, рыцарях, странствиях и сумеречной свободе.
Minstrels, troubadours, trouvères, minnesingers, skomorokhs are different names of professional strolling musicians of the Middle Ages. One can say, pop music of that time. This is mainly an verbal folklore tradition, but much has been written down. Ensemble Perceval reminds me the band Dead Can Dance, but it is on the other side of the barricade between the academic and popular music and still belongs to the "academics". Nevertheless, when I've listening to this music (from the play "The Game of Robin and Marion" with lots of music, which is sometimes regarded as a prototype of the opera) of 13th century trouvère Adam de la Halle, also known as Adam Hunchback (was hanged in 1287), I am surprised that the popular music of these far times sounds so modern. Moreover, possible to say that it is the ideal medieval music. This is I think exactly that music that any contemporary person would like to hear after the phrase "medieval music", it's a direct response to a simple query of fantasy about castles, knights, wanderings and the twilight freedom.

Alfred Schnittke - Concerto grosso No.2, part 2 (1982)

Это музыка для меня связана с первым глубоким переживанием смерти и до сих пор остаётся в сознании в качестве некоей смертной памяти. Не настоящей смерти, а именно той, что приходит через эти звуки, но воспринимается как своя. Шнитке несомненно обладал трансцендентным опытом и как никто другой постоянно щупал и доискивался, как оно там - с другой стороны? В третьей и четвёртой части этого Concerto grosso он забрался очень далеко. А мы послушаем вторую часть, медленные и страшные вариации на очень с виду простое расходящееся ostinato.
This music is related for me with the first deep experience of death and till now remains in my consciousness in the capacity of some memory of death. Not a real death but exactly that which came in these sounds and grasped like own. Schnittke definetely had some transcendental experience and like no other had continually touching and finding out about one question - how it is to be there, on another side? In third and fourth parts of this Concerto grosso he reached very far about this. And we will listen to the second part, slow and scary variations on in looks very simple divergent ostinato.

Nautilus Pompilius - "Наугад" / "At random" (1990) - Black birds

Пожалуй, единственная рок-композиция, как-то отвечающая "Лесному царю" - "Чёрные птицы" группы Nautilus Pompilius. "Лесной царь" уникален тем, что один певец поёт сразу за 4-х персонажей - рассказчика, отца, ребёнка и самого Лесного царя. В этой же философской притче о природе страха персонажей лишь на одного меньше - рассказчик, царь и Чёрные птицы. В обеих композициях напряжение каждую секунду нарастает до самого конца. Разница реплик персонажей в этой песне подчёркивается ритмически - тараторящий рассказчик, более степенный царь и дерзкая пропажа одной восьмой в репликах птиц - размер меняется с 6/8 на 5/8, в котором песня и заканчивается. Кроме того, это единственная известная мне песня, начинающаяся с тритонанты (весьма далёкой от основного тона тональности на расстоянии тритона). Также меня давно интересует такая тема, как магическое камлание в концовках рок-композиций, когда музыка закольцовывается в какой-то заклинающий круг - здесь это тоже есть, как и почти в каждой композиции этого одного из лучших, на мой взгляд, альбомов русского рока.
Perhaps the only rock song somehow responsible to Schubert's "Erl King" is "Black Birds" of Nautilus Pompilius. "Erl King" is unique in that a singer sings right over the four characters - the narrator, father, child and the Erl King. And in this philosophical parable about the nature of fear are three characters, only one less - the narrator, the king and the Black birds. In both compositions, the suspence increases every second until the end. The different cues of characters in the song emphasizes by the rhythmic - jabbering narrator, than more sedate king and the daring theft of one quaver at the cues of birds, where the time signature changes from 6/8 to 5/8, in which the song ends. In addition, it is only known to me song that starts with tritonic key (es-moll, when the main key is a-moll). I have also long been interested in such topic as a magical shamanistic ritual in the end of rock songs when the music is looped into some conjuring circle - here it is, too, like almost in every song in this one of the best, in my opinion, Russian rock albums. I'm sorry if it's too difficult for my poor English.

Franz Schubert - Erlkönig (1815)

Когда речь идёт о заигранной и наизусть изученной классике, периодически возникает желание найти исполнение, которое бы стёрло весь этот опыт и помогло открыть музыку заново. И я задался целью найти такого "Лесного царя", который заставил бы меня вновь пережить с замиранием сердца давно знакомую историю. Результат не заставил себя долго ждать. Во-первых, я нашёл в YouTube отличный современный мультфильм на эту музыку, а во-вторых, задействованное в нём исполнение оказалось тем самым музыкальным событием, которого я так искал. Также в Интернете доступен текст самой баллады Гёте с переводом на русский. Итак, вновь и сызнова "Лесной царь" Шуберта в исполнении потрясающего английского тенора Йена Бостриджа.
When we're talking about worn out and known by heart classical music, periodically we want to find such performance that can wipe off all our previous experience and help to discover this music all over again. And I've set myself the task to find such "Erlking" that can force me to feel anew with a sinking heart this very familiar story. And the result isn't kept me waiting for a long time. Firstly I've find in YouTube the perfect contemporary animation on this music, and secondly the performance used in this animation is exactly the one musical event I've looking for. Also in Internet you can see the original text of Goethe's ballad with an English translation. So, once again and afresh Schubert's "Erlking" in the performance of the amazing English tenor Ian Bostridge.

Fantomas - "Delirium cordia" (2003) / Pierre Henry - "Voile d'Orphee" (1953)

В этой монументальной электроакустической работе группы Fantomas я столкнулся с необычным вариантом цитирования. Ближе к концу здесь появляется точная цитата из музыки патриарха электроакустической музыки Пьера Анри "Покрывало Орфея", органично вплетённая в композицию, обросшая дополнительными звуками и даже соединённая с другими местами альбома тематическими связями. У меня была мысль, что, учитывая ровно 50 лет разницы между этими творениями, "Delirium cordia" вполне могла быть посвящена 50-летию создания одной из первых электроакустических композиций. Сравните эти два отрывка:
In this monumental electroacouctic work by "Fantomas" I was faced with an unusual case of quoting. Toward the end there the exact quote from the music of the patriarch of electroacoustic music Pierre Henry "Voile d'Orphee" appears, organically interwoven into the composition, covered with additional sounds and even connected by thematic links with other places of album. I had thought that, taking into consideration exactly 50 years between these two creations, "Delirium cordia" could well be devoted to the 50th anniversary of one of the first electroacoustic compositions.
