Adelaide Airport Disfunction

Well we are home safe and sound although KB is very tired.
The honeymoon was fantastic and Adelaide put on some brilliant weather. It only rained for 1 day and even then it didn't put a damper on things.

If I have anything to complain about it is Adelaide International Airport!
Those that run it should be taken out the back and shot. Coming in was not to bad although there was very little signage to tell you anything.
Had it not been that I had lived here and been to the airport before it could have been worse. Even I was disappointed with the way the place was set out. I can only assume there is work being done but once more I repeat there was no information. as for the help desk which was hidden in some obscure place no one was there. Not even a sign saying be back in 10mins!

Having told KB what a wonderful place Adelaide was, her first experience was to see a line of people waiting for a taxi, we counted 80 people before we decided to catch the bus. As for signage to say where the taxi stand was, nope didn't see a single thing. We had to use our eyes. Even looking for some airport personal to ask nope they were all on a tea-break!

Now we can and did forgive the taxi stand which by the way was approximately 200m from the Airport on the ground floor not the upper deck which we went to first because that's where you caught a taxi when I was last here. Once more no signage to say where the stand had gone!
It was coming home we encountered the flaws that firmly lay at the feet of those in control of Adelaide airport.
Checking in to Air New Zealand. We looked at the big board that had departures and saw nothing for Auckland or Air New Zealand.
Big signs for Qantas, Virgin, Cathay and REX.
REX are you serious? Air New Zealand, none ........... Oh unless you go outside on the upper deck which is being renovated or upgrade or something. We did see a lot of people out there in hi-viz vests wandering around aimlessly.

Back to the ground floor to the help desk where once more we found it unattended. A few minutes standing there like lost souls a woman did appear and happily told us the Air New Zealand check in was up stairs on the left. Was that my left or hers? Hers.
Back up stairs to her left nothing. We checked the big board again.still nothing.

We start slowly walking to the left or southern side of the check in area watching some people checking in at 28-32 check in desks ..... well what do you know Air New Zealand check in desks. We check in and move on through.
We head through customs and through duty free and head to Gate 20 which you can not get to because the doors are locked. It isn't like anyone is cleaning the place and once more there is no signage to even give a brief "This door will be open at whatever" Still no one to ask for help or answer any questions.

There are no clocks on the walls so one can check the time. There is only 1 toilet that is quite a walk from gate 20.
If you are that tight to have only one toilet for international passengers put it in the middle.
I feel really sorry for people who haven't been here before. Signage is poor and customer service on the floor none existent. You shouldn't run an airport like that!
The staff we did deal with at check in, customs and boarding were outstanding.

Adelaide is still a wonderful city. There are just certain places that need to get their act together and the airport is one. It is the first face people see as visitors and on this occasion it was not pretty.
As soon as we arrived and disembarked at Auckland Airport we just started looking around when an airport staff member asked if we required assistance. A polite "No thank you" with a smile.
A nudge from KB. "I told you Auckland was better than Adelaide!" just summed it all up.

The Final Day

Looking back, the time has flown. There was so much we were going to do but never did. Maybe next time.
The motel was just right for what we wanted and being so close to everything just made the whole experience even better. I have loved every minute here with KB, it has been fantastic.

Today we had a final catch up with Tarlee and Bianca. We took them out to lunch at the Jetty Hotel where Tarlee ordered chicken schnitzel and Diane sauce, KB ordered roast beef, I had a dozen oysters and Bianca shared Tarlees lunch. We had a few drinks and then went for a walk up Jetty Road before heading back to the motel where they bid us farewell.

KB and I had the rest of the afternoon to relax and pack.
Isaac and Kirsten came by bringing pizza with them for tea.
It was really nice to see them and enjoy the pizza,a few drinks and more than a few laughs.
All too soon they left.

KB and I are tired and looking forward to getting home. KB is especially looking forward to getting Coco home. I will miss those that have shared special moments with us.

It is time to go home. So I had better get to bed, I have a plane to catch!

BBQ and Beer

Well you do have to give credit where credit is due, Kirsten and Isaac sure know how to put on a BBQ spread even when the weather is wet, wild and windy. It was good to catch up with some more of the family and enjoy watching the footy and having a jam session with my brother.

The Infamous Midway Tavern

The Midway Tavern is my favourite pub. It is the place where many stories would unfold and a place where many long term friendships were built.

We arrive at 12 noon. The dining room doors are shut and there are a few patrons waiting patiently outside. Many of them look like they are ready for the knackers yard. it must be pension week or else there is a special on. we decide to head in through the front bar.

The place hasn't changed too much it is an inviting area especially for a front bar. I see the back of a barmaids head. It is Scottish Betty a long time employee and I mean a long time employee of the tavern. 2 beers and a Chardonnay ordered a trip to the wee house for some of use I strike up a conversation with Betty. her face gives away the fact that she knows me but just can not figure out just who or what I am. The penny finally drops and as is the way of the tavern old stories long wanted to be forgotten rise up and translated into today's language. Betty hasn't changed a bit. Still a smart ass barmaid and still controlling the front bar with an iron fist when she has too.

We bid farewell to the front bar and head through to the saloon/dining area. we park ourselves in the comfy lounge chairs and it is long before our friend Andrea and her friend Peter pop in. Andrea presents us with 2 bottles of wine the 1st (a wedding present) Grant Burge Cabernet 2008 the 2nd a Arlewood Cabernet Merlot 2005 which we are very thankful for.
It is but few minutes later Angela Geen (the Geens and the Boddeys moved into Egdecombe road about the same time) followed by my daughter Tarlee and her partner Bianca and then for the finale my sister Treza came through the doors.

A few drinks later and Andrea plays mum and books a table. We head to the table and check out the menu. The camera is passed around the table with the intention of each person takes 3 pictures Chicken schnitzel with Diane sauce for Tarlee and me, chili prawns for KB and assorted other meals for everyone else ranging from roast beef to barramundi.

After the meal it was back to the lounge area to have a few more drinks before heading home.
Before leaving the pub I did catch up with Geraldine an Irish barmaid who i say has been with this pub since it first opened. She remains as vibrant as ever and as sharp as a tack full of love and caring with all the memories to match.

KB and I farewell friends and family before heading back to our motel room.
We would like to thank my brother Isaac for being our chaffeur and my sister in-law for letting Isaac use her car for the day. Looking forward to a rest day on Saturday.

Friday with Family and Friends

Picked up about 9:30am by our chauffeur (my brother Isaac) we ventured north to my home town of Elizabeth. It is a place I haven't seen in over 4 years.
We head off and Isaac in his customary roll, gave a running commentary of the sights.
First stop, the Adelaide Crows shop to get a crows tee-shirt then onward we go.

The new southern freeway Isaac showed us is enormous and should be completed by 2015. The traffic here is certainly not as heavy as in Auckland. This is mainly due to the traffic lights being coordinated to the amount of traffic on the road.

The grounds are dry and the shades of brown take over the scenery the further north we go. It is in stark contrast to Glenelgs lush green areas. The temperature is a mild 22c and i wind the window down as we pass by the salt lands. We are coming into Salisbury and it is here we decide to visit my mums and dads grave site. It has been a while since any of us have visited but I find the head stone soon enough. A few minutes silence and we bid our farewells and head off to the see the house I grew up in.

I am so happy that I can share these moments will KB. Her presence helps me to cope with the emotional side of coming home.

We pass by the General Motors Holden plant that I worked at from 1984-1990. Along the Philip Highway we pass the Elizabeth Town Centre another place I worked. We travelled along the Main North Road, this road connects Adelaide to Gawler and beyond. If you continue on from Gawler you can reach those famous areas like the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley or Flinders Ranges. So many places and sights to be seen and that is just by heading north!

It was then we turned off on to Womma road and pass by the notorious Womma Railway Station. It is at this part of the journey we reach the suburbs formerly know as Elizabeth West and Elizabeth Fields but now known as Daveron Park. A lot of places in the area were named after aboriginal words. Womma road or Kalara reserve as examples. The areas are now full of low income family's whose values are a far stretch from when people first started developing the area in my time there.
There was a sense of community back then. It was slightly disappointing to see gardens over grown, car wrecks on front gardens and houses in disrepair. It was like driving through a war zone. I must state that my comments are personal and based on seeing a couple of streets I grew up in. Streets that I where I remember the beautiful gardens, the people who lived there and the friends that I made.
I am quite confident that there are pockets of neighbourhoods that take pride in their homes and suburbs. 42 Edgecombe Road Elizabeth Fields sometime in 1963 (I think) was where my journey in Australia started.
It was trip up Blight street I found almost heartbreaking and forged the comments above!

From Blight street we made our way through Daveron Park to Smithfield via Coventry road up Anderson Walk passed the Smithfield Hotel (another haunt of mine) through to the suburbs of Elizabeth Downs, Craigmore, Elizabeth Park checking out all the houses I lived in till we finally reach our destination "The Downs Hotel" now known as The Midway Tavern.

Easy As!

This honeymoon lark is easy as!
Especially when you have a truly beautiful diamond by your side.
Today was another great day. The weather has been outstanding.
We got up and decided to wander along the beach front which is beautiful.
Stopped at the pub for a drink and 5 games of keno and we or I will be going back on Saturday. We sit, drink and watch the world go by.

We walked along the jetty/pier and took a look back. The fresh sea air is invigorating and takes your mind away from the troubles in our head. (Not that we had any troubles. Just saying!)
It was great to see dogs frolicking in the sand and running into the ocean, quickly running to shore as each wave came crashing in. I even had a wee paddle, allowing my toes to sink into the sand as the freezing cold mountainous seas smashed into my chicken little legs.

Back at the motel it was chill time as lunch was prepared. Creamy danish blue spread on a fresh panni roll layered with pastrami serrano ham and a touch of pheasant pate. Washed down of course with a nice cold beer. Yes people I once more forgot to take a picture.

My nephew Tim and his wife Lauren will not be at the Midway Tavern on Friday when KB and I will endeavour to catch up with family and friends so my brother Isaac organised a roast dinner for us all at his place. What a wonderful evening it was, roast veggies, roast silverside and no gravy!

Back at the motel we relaxed, cleaned up and headed to bed.
Another wonderful day complete and a Friday with friends and family to come.

What day is it?

Morning campers, or afternoon!
We had another brilliant day.
For the first time in a very long time KB caught public transport. Yes people, I was able to get KB on the tram from Glenelg to Adelaide City Centre and what an adventure that turned out to be.

On our first day here we went for lunch at the pub and I ask for a West End Draught beer a common local beverage and they had none! I asked for a steak for lunch and they had none so that was not the best start to our trip, but, come the tram ride, just as we were on the outskirts of Adelaide the tram stopped and we waited.

Apparently there was a problem with the lights ahead and trams had backed up all through the main street of Adelaide. Did we panic? Nope not one bit. Our choices were simple, get of and walk a mile or sit in the air conditioned tram and wait patiently?
We waited and when the tram finally moved we were more than happy to wave to all those that had decided to walk or catch the bus they provided that hadn't arrived. All in all a good choice.

We went to the Adelaide Central Market I had been kind of bragging to KB that it was a delightful place, full of colour, beautiful smells from different foods with a fantastic atmosphere but stinky toilets.
Well I got everything right except the toilets were clean and didn't smell as bad as I had remembered.
We picked up some meats, cheese, tomatoes, pate and rolls then on our way out there just happened to be a bottle shop and of course with our supplies we also needed beverages to match. Chardonnay, Merlot and a case of West End rounded everything of nicely. The tram ride home was quick and uneventful.

Lunch was Serrano ham, New York pastrami, Kabana, Danish blue with Romano cherry tomatoes with Italian Ciabatta Rolls. Yum! Sorry no pictures because we for got! That was the royal we by the way, which means, I forgot! Although we maybe having the same again for lunch so pictures may still come to pass.

After lunch it was time to do the walk off lunch thingy. Instead of Round the Bays it was Round the Mariner at a pace more suited to a tortoise. Adelaide has put on some beautiful weather, not too hot and certainly not cold. The sea is a beautiful blue (like my wife's eyes) the sand is soft and white, the sky clear and the sea breeze very refreshing yet relaxing at the same time.

Back at the motel as we laid back, KB reading and yours truly on the computer a message from my youngest daughter popped up. She politely asked if she couple stop by. Having not seen the girl for 4 years how could I refuse?

Well me little darlings, it was as if we had never been away. Tarlee took to KB like a duck to water and the surprise was she brought her partner with her. What a treat!!!
For those that know Tarlee, when catching up with someone you haven't seen in a long time it has to be Bourbon o'clock time. So off to the Jetty Hotel for more drinking and debauchery.
We all had a great catch up, telling stories and exaggerating to the max. A feed of some delicious chips. (Gill you would have loved these. Far better than those cafe ones.)
All too soon they had to depart. We catch up again on Friday so saying good-bye was not to bad.

KB and I headed to bed at a more reasonable time that the night before 10:30pm NZ time.
What lies in store for tomorrow I am not sure. We are allowing cards to fall as they may and we are making choices that suit us. Being with KB is an awesome experience and I for one could not be happier.

Adelaide Welcomes KB and Whitesnake

Well now we made it safely to Adelaide on an Air New Zealand flight that was pretty good. My only complaint about the flight was the seating was very tight. It seems to me they have tried to ram a few extra seats on the plane. Other than that the trip was fine.
We started our journey at about 5:30am. Our neighbour Cameron, offered to take us to the airport which we are/were extremely grateful for as it was cold, wet and windy. Cameron and his wife Rachel have hearing disability so no radio or music on the way to the airport. Just sit in silence!
Makes one appreciate what we have aye!

Check in was no problems and arrival was as smooth as silk but, they have done up the airport and the line to catch a cab was long and I mean long. Not a cab in sight and 20 thousand people waiting in line. We caught the bus. $3AUD each for a trip to Glenelg a short walk to the motel and all was right with the world.

Fortunately our room was ready when we booked in so double bonus. KB was hungry so we freshened up and head to the main street approximately 2 Min's away. The main street has almost every eatery imaginable. My darling wife was famished so wanted something quick. We did look over at McDonald's but nah! We settled for a pub/bar that I had not been in.
One lasagna, one steak medium rare and a few drinks we were full. Now off to the supermarket for supplies then the liquor store/bottle shop for the essentials then back to the motel and collapse!

Our biggest obstacle so far has been the time difference. Obviously, a night of tossing and turning the night before didn't help the jet lag. Still, we are together and it is good to be here with KB although my beautiful wife did get a touch of sunburn in the time we were out. Sensitive skin me thinks!

Well I better try getting a bit more shut eye as tomorrow is another day and a trip into town could be on the cards meaning more pictures.

Oh I do!

I have been up and down like a yoyo!
Not suppose to get up till 4:30am. Oh well I'll try going back to cuddle that wonderful wife of mine.
Probaly post again once we are settled in the motel.
It is cold, wet and windy here in NZ. Adelaide will be warm and sunny so the weather gurus say.

Our Journey

Well butter me buns and cover them in 100's and 1000's, it is finally the day we pack our bags and have 1 more sleep before KB and I head off to Adelaide.

Yep! Adelaide the city of churches.
Why they call it that I don't know. As far as I can remember there is St Francis Xavier near the centre of town and St Peter's near Adelaide Oval.
Oh bugga!
I just did a search and found a list of Adelaide's churches. follow that link if you are that desperate to know.

Today is also the day that our dog (of eternal stench) Coco La Belle heads off on her holiday to the kennels a place called Pinky's.
To be honest this place was the best one we had seen. There are so many dodgy kennels out there. We were given a quick tour and they answered all our questions without hesitation. We asked about grooming as Coco is very reluctant to get clipped and they seemed quite confident that all would be fine. So a short back and sides for you Coco!
I know KB will miss her a lot.
That bundle of mischief has been through everything with KB.

We intend to take heaps of pictures and hope to post daily so we can share with you our journey.

Oh well I better head off and get ready for the morning exercise.

God just can't be bothered anymore!

It is indeed exciting to know that I will be catching up with some family and friends during our honeymoon in South Australia however I am somewhat bewildered by my blase attitude to seeing people. For me it is about spending time with KB and showing her where I grew up.

I grew up as a Roman Catholic and at some stage our old man decided we would become Morons, err I mean Mormons, before switching back to the Catholic faith. The old man was a fanatically religious person who would always try to enforce his thoughts and beliefs on to anyone who would listen. He would often quote scriptures that would completely back up whatever he did or said, therefore justifying any actions he would undertake. It appears the tradition continues.

I think religion and religious groups are vastly over rated.
The poor or disadvantaged people in almost every religious group always pay the biggest price yet they are the most generous and sincere. They are also the most manipulated and easiest to abuse when it comes to any religion. Their present situation blamed on the sins of the past or what others deem to be their lack of faith.

To suggest that anyone must suffer to prove their love or faith in a being that can not be seen is questionable. It is even more outrageous to think that this so called loving and caring being would even consider that sort of behaviour acceptable.
Love thy neighbour, etc etc can be countered by various other phrases from any scriptures, from any religious group. Even Buddhists, the greatest lovers of life and everything in it, will not fight back when attacked, but will stand by and watch others do the dirty work for them.

Every religious group has its own demons. I have yet to find one that doesn't.
It is the people who claim to be God fearing, that will go about passing judgements on other peoples actions or throwing a hissy fit over things that in the bigger scheme of things do not matter. It is all about scoring brownie points, but to be honest I think that God, (if there is one) just can't be bothered anymore.
We all should be accepting the differences of others. We do not have to agree, just be accepting that others have different views and are entitled to them.
We don't have to beat/chastise /behead/crucify/stone/burn at the stake/impale anyone.
(Note that religious people always find the most heinous ways of dealing with those that do not agree with what they think!) So much for forgiveness! Who are the deviants really?

I don't think I have lost faith in God, I have lost faith in mankind and its religion.

COT to Repeat Myself!

Getting on the plane was difficult.
It was a somewhat sad occasion, however a new beginning awaited.
There were doubts. There always is. Who knows where the cold wind blows?
Just before landing he cleaned up and refreshed himself. Black suit, white shirt, red tie. He looked in the mirror and straighten the tie.
Here goes he thinks. washes his hands, spray the cologne, collects his things and returns to his seat. He finishes his red wine a cab/sav blended Merlot.
Closes his eyes. Sleep does not come.
His thoughts are concentrated on how he will react when he meets her. Perspiration appears on his forehead as he approaches customs.

He provides them with the paperwork and the bag in which he has declared all foodstuff and goods he is bringing in to the country.
Customs look at him and wonder, he explains he is meeting a friend for the first time. Met on the internet and how his stomach is churning inside.
Customs search both his bags and find nothing untoward.
He smiles and thanks them. They smile back and have a laugh.

He pulls his shoulders back as he approaches the doors that may lead to another chance at life.
After wiping his hands and taking a deep breath he takes both bags and then ventures through the doors and into another world.
She was standing over by a window.
The scenery behind her did not do justice to the way she looked. Blue faded jeans and a loose fitting silky top and sandals.
She was wearing very little make up, if any at all.
She is beautiful, simple but beautiful.ly stunning.

He stops in front of her and said hello, putting his bags down he held out his hand.
She took it, and as they went to kiss each others cheek, each moved and their lips touched.
They both backed off.

She grabbed his carry bag.
He took his suitcase.
He then started talking mainly to calm his nerves.
They started to walk and talk.
He opened a door for her, letting her through first.
The effort was nonchalant and he started to feel at ease.

They continued walking and as they did their hands touched.
They didn't flinch, they just entwined their hands as if it was something they had done many times before.
Smiles emerged, laugh came forth, excitement flowed and conversation was non stop.
This was a meeting, a meeting of 2 people's souls who had waited a long time to be one.
The waiting is long.
The end becomes what should have been!
A unnconditional love to ignite the world.
It will grow and we will see it flourish,
There will be others and we wonder if it will be forever and yes it will, after all tomorrow is another day Yet right now quite frankly no one gives a damn!

It has been quite some time since I caught up with my family and friends in South Australia. It has been almost 4 years and I wonder how much has changed. I wonder how much I have changed.
I will find out in a couple of weeks when KB and I go on our honeymoon. We have allocated a couple of days to catch up with those family and friends that want to catch up. The rest of the time is for us to do as we please and enjoy life.

I am blessed that KB and I often talk about how far we have come both as a couple and as individuals. We really have done a lot in our short time together. Divorced, moved house, lost contact with some family and friends, bought our own home and of course got married. One tends to forget all the adversity that we have faced of the time we have had together. So, have I changed and if so have I done so for the better or have I become worse?

As I reflect on things passed, I believe that since being with KB I have become a better person, not because I had to or was forced to but purely and simply I was allowed for the first time to live life in my own way and in my own time. I am free to be me and I am loved for who I am, not what somebody else wants me to be.

In August I would have given up smoking for 3 years. On my days off I regularly exercise, I eat healthy, although I still drink quite a bit, the levels have decreased quite a bit. I am always looking for healthy options in life. I go to work so I can look forward to coming home and they pay me for it, how cool is that? I love my job!

Probably the biggest area I have changed is my outlook on life in general. I don't believe that it's just old age catching up, I honestly think I have been given the freedom to change my mindset. No longer do I get angry or upset when hearing others having their say on how I have done this or that. In the greater scheme of things it is mind over matter. I don't mind so they don't matter.
I constantly crave positivity, I no longer tolerate negativity. I look for opportunities to take a positive from a negative. I look for the light in the dark, the good in the bad.

Make no mistake I am far from perfect and I am still a sarcastic son of a bitch, but I am me and you can either take it or leave it.
I am happy and a better man for the choices I have made and that has to be a good thing.

Whitesnakes do it better ................. Naturally!

COT Time For This

Time will pass and seasons will come and go.

But then that's something, that we all should know!

Like reflected rainbows, after rain,

Or all our money, going down the drain!

The darkness coming, before the dawn,

Putting a coat on, to keep us warm.

Sleeping first, before waking up,

Eat from a plate, drink from a cup,

No thinking first before we hate,

Slow right down, so we'll be late,

One week on

The wedding was set for 12:30pm Saturday 23rd of March 2013. We had organised everything ourselves over the past 2 months which we thought may have been stressful but surprisingly it wasn't.

Coco does her inspection of the deck.

It rained early in the morning and the deck outside was wet but anyone who knows Auckland will know it drys out very quickly. The forecast temperature was 24C with sea breezes and it did not disappoint.

Doesn't KB look stunning!

It was comforting to have my brother and my sister in law here. They were fantastic as were Mike and Gill who supplied glasses and other items to help the day flow.

Will the ring fit?

The ceremony was quick (about 10mins) a fitting one that KB and I really enjoyed.

Now here is your ring!

Other than the usual nibbles, we cooked up some chicken nibbles using KB's Honey Soy recipe and my Cajun spice chicken recipe. Then came BBQ'ed sausages and steak and of course for desert trifle.

The wedding cake was simply an orange and lemon cake with cranberries and pecan nuts that I took from a chef over here known as Annabelle something. I just tweaked it a little to improve it.

Of course there were plenty of drinks and everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Due to limited room we had 2 sessions, the main wedding and at 16:30pm we had drinks with the bride and groom.

Married to the beautiful KB .... DONE!

All in all it was a brilliant day that we shall remember for a very long time.

COT to be Offended

"I am offended!"
Just what does that mean?

A Verb

Cause to feel upset. annoyed or resentful.

Be displeasing to: "the smell of smoke offended him"

So why did the cause effectively create upset, annoyance or resentment?

It did so because the receiver of said offense allowed it to! Why not ignore it and move on with life?

Oh no! We can't do that because we as humans, have to make a big song and dance about it! The offender has to accentuate the offense so as to highlight being offended and hence claim some high moral ground or stand.

What actually happens when one is offended? Does your hair fallout? Will your testicles or titties drop off? Is their going to be an affliction with some incurable disease? Are massive scarring of ones buttocks going to happen?

NO!

Being offended by something is just an excuse to be bigger asshole than the offender; and this world already has enough of them.

Get over it and stop worrying about it.

Get on an enjoy life because in youth we learn; in age we understand.

Or so the story goes!
