Beloved is a novel by the American writer Toni Morrison. Set after the American Civil War (1861–1865), it is inspired by the story of an African-American slave, Margaret Garner, who temporarily escaped slavery during 1856 in Kentucky by fleeing to Ohio, a free state. A posse arrived to retrieve her and her children under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which gave slave owners the right to pursue slaves across state borders. Margaret killed her two-year-old daughter rather than allow her to be recaptured.

Beloved's main character, Sethe, kills her daughter and tries to kill her other three children when a posse arrives in Ohio to return them to Sweet Home, the plantation in Kentucky from which Sethe recently fled. A woman presumed to be her daughter, called Beloved, returns years later to haunt Sethe's home at 124 Bluestone Road, Cincinnati. The story opens with an introduction to the ghost: "124 were spiteful. Full of a baby's venom."

The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988. It was adapted during 1998 into a movie of the same name starring Oprah Winfrey. During 2006 a New York Times survey of writers and literary critics ranked it as the best work of American fiction of the past 25 years.

Dreamer is a 2005 American family drama film starring Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning, inspired by the true story of an injured Thoroughbred racehorse named Mariah's Storm. It marked the directing and screenwriting debut of John Gatins.

Moments in Time

Time bleeds and seeps
memories,
one upon another.

The past appears
indefinite,
as if scraped away here and there

Revealing moments of a time before.
With that,
the surface of my reality is shattered.

Storm

Clouds,gray and heavy
Hang low in the sky
Touching the trees tops
With their billowing mists
A storm approaches

Trees shudder and tremble
Swaying rhythmically in the wind
While dreaming their melodious daylight dreams
Earth's eternal dance

Lush verdant-green leaves,
Whisper of warm summers days
Filtered with golden light
And gently scented breezes

Awake now, from their dark otherworldly visions
They whisper,sweet and low of the coming storm
Sorrowing, moans fill the blusterous air
As wind swept branches
turn down their shinning leaves
And bow in submission,
Bow to the coming of natures fury

Night Magic

Magic seemed to pulsate
from deep within the dense forest.
Magic that could be felt
in the cold north wind.
Magic that could be seen
in shadowy forms hidden beneath
the moss covered trees.

The dark blue green trees
swayed as if,
Alive
While
Repeatedly,
the call of the night bird rang out
It's sound shrill and heavy
full of menace.

She stopped and listened
as the night bird called again.
Low and mournful
She would not admit her fear
nor how the cold made her tremble.

Forty years had come and gone.
Forty years,
and still they whispered.
Behind locked doors
Whispered in the dead of night.

Whispered of another time
when fear was a part of living.
Fear
Fear fed upon fear
until
none dared enter the forest

Mists came,
rising slowly in the darkness.
Creeping up and around her.
She now was fully engulfed in the wet icy
fingers of shadows.
Fear pervaded her being.
Her mind numb
Her body powerless
She faded within the mist.
As had the other, forty years ago.

Just One More Chance

Oh, to have one more chance
Chance to undo all that has been done
A chance to live again
To do all things anew
Angels surround me,arms out stretched waiting
Oh please just one more ride
One more love, one more smile
But still they wait
Too late my pleas, so much to miss

Silence

As a child she spoke little if ever
until the age of five
finding comfort in the deep silence
that she wove tightly around herself

The little girl reached out not for
an other's arms
Content to sit beneath a table
or in some tiny corner
where none could find her

But she listened to every sound
every word which assaulted her tender ears
She had heard them
every day every night
And she knew
she knew she wanted no part of it

Shadows were her playmates
darkness her best friend
For darkness hid her well

When discovered her large grey eyes
would close in fear
Her little body tremble
But not a word would she utter
just a tiny moan broke free from her
Then silence
Silence until it would start again
