Using Technology to Understand Politics in 2012

--> --> The purpose of this page is to get a better understanding of politics as it applies to America. This page could also be considered a "beginners" guide or launch pad. There are many words that I continue to hear and see from different supporters of the political parties within America.

It is my hope that with a better understanding of these words,...we can attempt to have a clear and concise understanding of the problems that face so many Americans and to find a solution that results in a win for all parties involved. I will attempt to provide definitions of the most common words I keep hearing and reading during this political cycle, using something that everyone here has access to if you are reading this....... The Internet.

Thanks in advance to Dictionary.com, Wikipedia, and Merriam-Webster for helping to define these words and providing sources of information!

Naturally this list will not cover every word used, just the most common words used when discussing the current candidates and their policies as they run for the highest office in the land. At the time of this posting the current candidates are: President Barack Obama (age 51) and Vice President Joe Biden (age 69) and the opponents are Governor Mitt Romney (age 65) and US Congressman Paul Ryan (age 42).

These are the most common words used in no particular order:

3. Tea Party-(Patriots)- "Wikipedia definition"- an American political organization that promotes "fiscally responsible" activism as part of the Tea Party movement. Its mission is "to attract, educate, organize, and mobilize our fellow citizens to secure public policy consistent with our three core values of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets." The group is a strong opponent of excess government spending and debt.

4. Left Wing- 1.The liberal, socialist, or radical section of a political party or system, 2. those who support varying degrees of social or political or economic change designed to promote the public welfare, 3. In politics, the Left, left-wing, and leftists are people or views which generally support social change to create a more egalitarian society.

5. Right Wing-1.The conservative or reactionary section of a political party or system, 2. right: those who support political or social or economic conservatism; those who believe that things are better left unchanged, 3. In politics, the Right, right-wing, and rightist have been defined as acceptance or support of social hierarchy.

6. Socialist(ism)- 1.A person who advocates or practices socialism, 2. Adhering to or based on the principles of socialism, What is Socialism? is an economic system characterized by social ownership and cooperative management of the means of production, and a political philosophy advocating such a system.

7. Marxist(ism)- 1. The political and economic theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, later developed as the basis for communism.

8. Darwinism- 1. is a set of movements and concepts related to ideas of transmutation of species or of evolution, including some ideas with no connection to the work of Charles Darwin.

9. Taxes-1. A compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions, 2 A strain or heavy demand.

10. Liberal- 1. Open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values, 2. Favorable to or respectful of individual rights and freedoms, 3. Regarding many traditional beliefs as dispensable, invalidated by modern thought, or liable to change

11. Conservative-1. Holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion, 2. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore

12. Capital Gains- 1. profit from the sale of assets, as bonds or real estate., 2. a profit that results from a disposition of a capital asset, such as stock, bond or real estate, where the amount realized on the disposition exceeds the purchase price. The gain is the difference between a higher selling price and a lower purchase price.

13. Corporation- 1. is created under the laws of a state as a separate legal entity that has privileges and liabilities that are distinct from those of its members. 2. an association of individuals, created by law or under authority of law, having a
continuous existence independent of the existences of its members, and powers and
liabilities distinct from those of its members. 3. any group of persons united or regarded as united in one body.

14. Muslim- 1. of or pertaining to the religion, law, or civilization of Islam., 2. A follower of the religion of Islam., 3. Muslims believe that God is eternal, transcendent, absolutely one (the doctrine of tawhid, or strict or simple monotheism), and incomparable; that he is self-sustaining, who begets not nor was begotten.

15. Mormon-1. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a religion founded in the US in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. , 2. Of or relating to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: "the leader of a Mormon congregation", 3. Mormons believe in "a friendly universe," governed by a God whose work and glory it is to bring his children to immortality and eternal life.

16. Christian- 1. A person who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Jesus Christ and his teachings., 2. Most Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity ("tri-unity"), a description of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 3. Christians also believe Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible.

17. 1%-The upper class is most commonly defined as the top 1% with household incomes commonly exceeding $250,000 annually. (see Affluence in the United States on wikipedia or click here)

18. 99%- also known by the phrase "We are the 99%" 1. The phrase indirectly refers to the concentration of income and wealth among the top earning 1%, and reflects a belief that the "99%" are paying the price for the mistakes of a tiny minority. see wikipedia or click here.

19. Communism- 1. A political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs., 2. a form of socialism that abolishes private ownership, *(see socialism above)*

20. Capitalism-1. An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit., 2. an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations,especially as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth.

21. Middle Class- 1. The social group between the upper and working classes., 2. Of, relating to, or characteristic of this group. More information about the American middle class can be found here.

22. Wealthy- 1. Having a great deal of money, resources, or assets: {side note: wealthy can have many different meanings and is relative to your own personal finances or others finances.}

23. Class Warfare- 1. conflict between social or economic classes.

Amazon's Cloud player and Apples iCloud services

Here is a quick rant about Amazon's Cloud Player and Apple's iCloud services. I love music so when I purchase my music I like knowing that I can play it anywhere I want when I want. There used to be a way to download music directly to your computer from Amazon in mp3 format without having to use a "cloud player". It was simple,...purchase your music, your download will begin in a moment,... your download is complete.

Now when you purchase music in mp3 from Amazon, you have to agree to the new terms which state in so many words that .....If you want to use Amazon's services, such as downloading music, you agree to let us scan all of your music on your device and upload your music to our Cloud and make a copy of your music for you so that you can listen to your music anywhere you have a connection to the Cloud on up to 10 authorized devices......

But I don't want Amazon to scan my music or allow them authorization to do so. I just want to download my purchased music and go on about my way. Like any other business, ...if the service is good or great,....I will be back for more. Here is my problem...I want to be able to listen to my music whenever and where ever I want. My solution,....go back to buying cd's and then just copy it to my own devices. Problem solved.

I don't yet see the benefit of using any kind of Cloud services unless you are short on storage. If you are short on storage, please see my other post on Portable Storage here. So in keeping with the spirit of having an open mind, I decided to share some videos about Amazon Cloud that might help me change my mind and maybe yours too.

Now in this example, ...this guy purchases music while he's at work????... 1. I have never done this or desired to do this at work. 2. Your employer would probably not be overly excited about this either. 3. If I run out of room, which hasn't happened yet,...I will buy more storage like hard drives, sd cards, flash drives....or what ever I need. Needless to say, this video doesn't convince me to use the cloud. If you think this is a good idea,....I encourage you to check out this video......

Wireless Technology and Wireless Electricity???

What's up fellow smart guys and gals?! I'm so excited to be alive and well living in the age of technology. So many things have changed in just my lifetime from phones to computers to the internet. I'm beginning to realize that children of today are coming into a world full of wireless technology that already exists.

Isn't this amazing!!! Children are aware of the technology, but have no remote idea how it works. Have you ever tried to explain to a child how a cell phone works???.....Have you ever tried to explain how a cell phone works to an adult??? Do you know how a cell phone works??? More specifically how a cell phone communicates with another cell phone. I grew up in a time when electronic devices were connected by wires....lol, for example the telephone, video games, and in some cases remote controls connected to beta machines. I'm sure that you can think of a few devices that were once connected to wires that enabled them to function that are now wireless.

Here is a basic, crash course, explanation of how a cell phone works. A cell phone has some essential basic components that are necessary in order to function as a wireless device. It has a battery, a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna, a speaker, a microphone, and a keypad or touchscreen in most cases. When you make a call, the cell phone transmits a signal to a receiving/transmitting cell phone tower The cell phone tower transmits your request and attempts to locate the number that you dialed. This all happens during the ringing portion of the call. The person you called hears their cell phone ringing, they answer it, and then the two calls are connected by two or more transmitting/receiving antennas and now you are speaking to each other in practically real time with very little noticeable delay in sound quality. You can also check out this video and other from YouTube that give other explanations of how cell phones work.

Now,....when I tried to explain this to a child,.....naturally a good bit of the technical tidbits of information went beyond their understanding. The child's response was that the cell phone connects to the telephone wires,... so I asked her to show me where the telephone wires are and she pointed to a telephone pole. I said okay,..... but how does her voice get from here to the telephone pole.....and then came the confusion and to my surprise the ideas!!! I began to explain that at one point these devices were connected by wires and then someone figured out a way to send the same information through the air without wires.

Wireless Charging

So,... if this can be done,....would it be possible to send electricity through the air....safely,.... using a transmitting antenna connected to a receiving antenna? As it turns out, there are a number of companies like Qualcomm, Sony, and LG, currently working on technology that will enable you to wirelessly charge your devices and more importantly your transportation!!

Maybe in a matter of a few weeks or months these collective thoughts and ideas can become a reality and we will finally have the futuristic society that we all envision!! Now all we have to do is get enough Solar power to wirelessly power everyones homes for Free!!! Imagine the whole world having access to something that we all use and take for granted.

Netflix Class Action Lawsuit

Did you recently receive an email from Netflix about a class action lawsuit that could potentially affect you??? The claim basically states that Netflix keeps a record of your Personally Identifiable Information as it pertains to your credit card information and viewing habits with Netflix from streaming to DVD or Blu ray rentals in an effort to provide suggestions for other movies or TV shows based on what videos you watch and rank and so on.....but, most tech savvy people already knew this. The Personally Identifiable Information according to the plaintiffs could potentially be sold to 3rd parties and you probably don't want that to happen without your expressed permission.

So.... now what do I do? Well, http://www.videoprivacyclass.com has all the information you need to make an informed decision about this class action lawsuit so give it a check...., but if you just want to click your heels and get the quick answer to the question that is probably on your mind right now,...just ask Uncle Willy what you get.

The resolution of this settlement boils down to the agreement that Netflix will "decouple" or separate your Personally Identifiable Information from your viewing habits and history 365 days after you cancel your service with them. But!!! ....if you go back as a subscriber, the 365 day counter will start over and not go back into effect until you cancel and wait another 365 days before they "decouple" your information.

However, if you enjoy Netflix like I do though,....you should keep doing business with them. I haven't had any problems with Netflix aside from losing those paper return envelopes...but that's a minor issue of my own.

What's up internet land?!! So,...do you think your internet connection is fast??? Well, think again. The fastest internet service I have personally had ever has been 20 MBps (Megabytes per second) download and 1 MBps upload and so far its been great! It does just about everything I currently need to do as I browse the internet. To put Google's new service into perspective.....1,000 MBps download and 1,000 MBps upload or more appropriately 1 GBps (Gigabytes per second) is what Google Fiber will bring to the internet dinner table. Google has just recently introduced Google Fiber and plans to roll this service out to a neighborhood near you! If you don't know your current download and upload speeds,....go ahead and check out the Speed Tester (right click and open link in new window) and then post your speeds below in the comments section!

This is awesome, because I get to be a witness again of the evolution of the internet! I had my first internet experience back in 1998 when "dial-up" was the most common way to get online. Back then, you had to make sure no one was using the phone or had plans to use the phone or hoped and prayed that no one was going to call you while you were online because you would lose your connection to the internet. America Online (AOL) was my service provider at that time and you had to install the service to your computer using a cd rom and even that was slow compared to today's standards. Streaming was unheard of and watching video's Youtube style style......fuhgettaboutit!!! My connection was capable of 56 KBps which converted to MBps would be 0.056 MBps..... not very fast at all! I think you get the idea.

Google Fiber provides all you can eat, Ultra high speed internet, High Definition TV service, and a Nexus 7 Tablet as your new remote control!!...Cool!!! If you want more information on how you can get Google Fiber,....gather a bunch of your friends, family, and neighbors so that you can turn your neighborhood into a "Fiberhood". Digital Barbeque!!!

--> --> Here in the United States,.... we are fast approaching the Fourth of July 2012. During this time of the year kids are on break from school for the summer and families are spending more time together. Barbecue's and cook-outs( both the same in my book lol!!) are being planned as well as Family reunions. Unfortunately with that planning comes one of the more important aspects of making all these joyous occasions come together....and that's Money....

There are many costs involved with planning a barbecue or family reunion and they usually end up being one or a combination of the 3 "F"'s.... Food, Fuel, and Fun. Feeding all of your guests can definitely hit you in the pockets if you don't plan properly and many times these costs don't come into view until after everyone has headed home with a full belly and a smile. Fuel costs are a biggie when it comes to planning to visit friends and family at a distance especially considering the unpredictability of gas prices. Finally,... the cost of fun is relative to your situation, so be creative!!! Dust off that Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3 and show all your guests that dance game that everyone is talking about!!

--> If you really want to get creative using technology. You can have a "Digital barbecue"....(you heard it here first!!) What's a digital barbecue???,... I thought you'd never ask. Using Google Hangouts you can set up your computer and a HDTV provided it has the appropriate connections and invite your long distance friends and family to do the same on their end. Set it up so that who ever is a guest at your barbecue can view or interact with others via Google Hangouts on the other end. Think video conference! Now you have 2 parties in one!!!

Which satellite provider has the best picture?

--> --> I personally would recommended Satellite HD service like Directv. I'll refer to my experience with Directv. I personally installed more than 6000 Directv systems during my time working with Directv so I have some experience with how Directv works. Directv is 100% digital by its very nature. While service may vary in your area due to your physical location and any obstructions to the southern sky,.... a properly installed Directv system with HD service will give you an amazing picture.

I say properly installed because the Directv HD dish needs to have a clear unobstructed view to the southern sky. If you live on the West Coast of the United States, your dish will be pointed toward the South Eastern sky and if you live on the East Coast, your dish will be pointed toward the South Western sky. If you live in the Central United States your dish will be pointed due South.

So,... now that you have your new HDTV,...... you're probably wondering why it doesn't look the way it did at the store. You will need to sit down and get familiar with the picture settings or adjustments for your particular HDTV. Generally you want to adjust the picture during the time of day that you watch most of your tv programming. If you watch tv during the day in a brightly lit room, you may have to make some adjustments to compensate for a darker environment during the evening hours.

Lets talk about the source. More than likely, the HDTV's that you see on display are connected to Blu-ray players, Cable, or Satellite service. So,... if you want your HDTV to shine, make sure it's connected to at least 1 of those 3 devices. More importantly, you want to ensure that your "source" is a High Definition source. Your standard DVD player will give you a good picture when connected to your new HDTV, but it will not be displayed in HD because DVD's just do not have the ability to do so. You will need to buy a Blu-ray player to watch High Definition movies. Basic cable won't do it either,...you're going to have to upgrade your cable or satellite service to HD to take full advantage of your new tv's amazing picture. Be mindful that just because you purchased a HDTV, that doesn't mean HD will be free unless you are going "old school" and using a set of rabbit ears. Yes, you can get free HD but you will be at the mercy of your local tv broadcasters, the quality of your rabbit ears, and how well you can adjust them for the best signal.
