Thea's Simple 7th Birthday Celebration

Yasmin Althea "Thea", my daughter turned 7 last April 25, 2013. We agreed not to hold a party at home with a lot of guests. We just wanted a simple yeat memorable celebration of her special day.

We originally planned an out-of-town swimming but due to my hectic schedule it did not push through.

The kids and I got up early during Thea's birthday. I promised that I will take them to the park. We went to Ayala Triangle Gardens, ate breakfast at McDonald's, play a little at Time Zone, and did some grocery shopping at the Landmark. Then we had a simple "handaan" at night. We had spaghetti, fried chicken, and cake.

Hello world!!!

My church duties, motherhood duties, and full-time job have been my main concerns during these past few months of 2013. In addition to that, I got hooked to reading e-books plus few games such as Candy Crush Saga, an addictive candy puzzle adventure hahaha.

I already mentioned in my previous posts that I have a new nanny for my 2 kids. So, I devoted some of my time training her.So far, she's okey - responsible, kind, patient, and my kids get along with her easily.

On the other hand, seminars, training, meetings and other work-related matter also took a large chunk of my time. We had a sort of sports tournament, too - the UDD Bowlympics 2013 held at the Metroclub Bowling Center here in Makati City. Our team landed second place in Division B (teams composed on not-so professional bowlers hehe). Not bad, eh. Here's my team together with our Department Head. Me and my colleagues are getting hooked to bowling.

I'm going out-of-town next week for a three-day Makati Shelter Plan writeshop in Camayan Beach Resort in Subic.

I miss blogging, I miss my blogs. Now, I am contemplating on letting go of my other blogs and concentrate on this blog. I might get a domain and migrate this to Wordpress. Well, that's quite a tedious process so let's see what will happen next.

Oh wait, before I end this post. I am proud to announce that my daughter is turning 7 on the 25th of this month. I have not prepared anything for her party yet. Well, she just want a simple swimming party and a toy shopping spree. She has a long wishlist of toys she wanted - a big kitchen set, electronic err battery operated musical keyboard, Barbie or Moxy Girl Doll, to name a few.

Lemon on my Water, Lemon on my Dishes

There are several health benefits from lemon. I learned this from an officemate and based on further research on the Internet, studies show that lemon is for treatment of diseases like throat infections, constipation, indigestion, dental problem, fever, high blood pressure, kidney problem (kidney stones), and rheumatism. It can also help cure internal bleeding and, hair and skin problems. Aside from this lemon is also good for weight loss.

I am getting hooked to drinking warm water with lemon juice. I also put lemon in a variety of dishes such as pan-grilled pork, fried chicken, adobo and salsa for nachos. This morning I prepared fried chicken which was marinated in lemon juice, salt and pepper. This coming weekend, I am planning to have a pan-grilled tuna steak.

As school year 2012-203 draws to an end, we, parents are looking for enjoyable and productive summer activities for our kids. For instance, my musically-inclined daughter who's in Grade 1 wants to learn how to play musical instrument. I've enrolled her to Voice lessons last summer, and this summer she's gonna be taking piano lessons.

Thanks to fairs such as Expo Kid for showcasing a wide array of options to choose from in terms of summer fun activities.Now on its 5th year, this kiddie fair is organized by Mommy Mundo.

On Hiring a Nanny

It's been 6 days since my kids' new fulltime Yaya (nanny) arrived. I finally hired a nanny to help me attend the kids while I am away especially during weekdays. My sister-in-law still leaves with us and assists me in taking care of Yohan, my super active toddler.

Honestly, my husband and I have apprehension on hiring a nanny who's not our relative. Based on my observation, Tata, my 19-year old nanny is performing well and meets my expectations. She is patient in dealing with Yohan's tantrums and Thea's kakulitan. She is organized and always keep the house clean. I do hope that she will maintain the good traits she's showing now and will not give me headache in the future.

Yasmin's 7th Birthday Wishlist: Fully Furnished Bedroom

Three months from now, my lovely daughter is turning 7 three months from now. Excited as she is, her birthday wishlist is growing longer and longer each day , lolz. She want her own room -fully-furnished, keyboard/organ, a bunch of toys such as kitchen set, Moxy Girl dolls, etc. She's also eager to learn how to play the piano this coming summer vacation. Apart from that, she's dreaming of either swimming party or staycation in one of the hotels in town.

Well, our deal is she have to perform well in terms of Church duties (she's a member of the Children's Choir) and school. Likewise, Mama and Papa cannot afford to grant those wishes all at the same time. We have to work together to give her and her little brother good education and a comfortable life.

For the meantime, I am compiling ideas on how to create her dream bedroom a beautiful and cozy one. I am fascinated with these cool organizing ideas.

Well, it has to be included in our plans hahaha. Given the limited space in her future bedroom, the drawers cum storage boxes in this bed is a hit! A day after baby Alphonse was born, he was diagnosed with a heart illness called Tetralogy of Fallot. An illness curable by an open heart surgery. December 28th, 2012 | The Shocking News

Early morning, I got a visit from my anesthesiologist, my OB-Gyne and the Pediatrician. They went straight to inform me about the bad news. My baby has a hole in his heart chambers and that it needs to be checked by a Pedia Cardiologist. It was such a devastating news. What did my baby do to deserve such an illness? He is so tiny and fragile and he had just arrived in our lives. I kept on crying and I can’t bring myself to stop. It is so heartbreaking.
The next doctor who came into my room was the Pedia Cardiologist and he confirmed the illness of my son. He has Tetralogy of Fallot. He further explained that there is a hole between his bottom heart chambers causing him to lack enough oxygen supply to his lungs. It was the reason why he wasn’t crying. It was as if my son understands that the further he cries, the more stressful it will be for his heart.
The doctor was very kind and told us that even though it happened to him at this stage, this illness is curable by surgery. Yes, my little boy will have to undergo an open heart surgery to survive this illness. He needs to have it at 6 weeks old, the earliest but no more than 3 months or he will not make it. He told us how much the surgery will cost and what do we need to prepare. We will need roughly $12,500 for the surgery alone. It was another shocking news but deep in our hearts, we knew there is hope. We are not wealthy and we need to get that amount in a month so we can schedule our baby’s surgery and free him from this very stressful and scary condition.

...Day 9 - 13 of 30 Day Blog Challenge

This realization makes me said. I failed to comply with this daily meme. Lack of internet connection at home and tons of household chores prevented me update my blogs during the past weekend.

In spite of this, I will continue to participate in the remaining days of this blog challenge.

Oops! There I one thing that I also miss. I miss reading books. I started reading during my high school days, when my sister (who was a college student back then) sent me her old books, mostly romance. Are you familiar with Mills and Boon, Harlequin Romance and the like? Those were the type of books that I have read. I seldom had the opportunity to read when I was in college. Then, when I was new here in my job, my officemate who's a bookworm used to lent me some books from here collection. Motherhood, career, and blogging made me pretty preoccupied, thus I temporarily stopped reading.

Thanks to the smartphones and downloadable e-books. I started reading again since last week and I feel like am getting hooked to it.

Day 8 - My Short Term Goals for January

Organizing, Budgeting, and Saving are my buzz words for 2013. I have yet to prepare a long list of goals I want to accomplish this year. As I've said in my year-ender post, 2012 has been a challenging one for me. I have are lots of things that needs to be done this year for a more productive and stress-free day to day routine, both as a mom and an employee.

To start with, I am jotting down here my short-term goals for this month:

1. Buy a Fully-Automatic Washing Machine

Done! We already bought a Samsung automatic washing machine last Sunday. Whoa!such a relief for having a new laundry assistant. I'll see if I can post a product review about this soon.

2. Home Organizing and Office Desk De-Cluttering

Home organizing has been my project since last year. Unfortunately, I've done it in a very small portion of our humble abode. Taking care of my activley growing 2 year old son do take a big chunk of my time. This month, I hope to finish de-cluttering the kitchen cupboards by getting rid of unneccesary things that piled up in there.

At the office, I also started sorting the 2012 files and put them in my designated area in the storage room. Next in my to-do list, is labeling each of the folders for easy retrieval when needed. I have to organize the files in my desktop computer. There are files that needs to be deleted such the draft reports, drafts blog posts in MS Word (lolz), etc. etc.

3. Track Expenses and Start Saving

I have two ways in tracking my expenses. I have a small notebook wherein I list the details of income and expenses and I recently created a installed a free app called Spending in my iPhone which will enables me to record the summary of monthly income and expenses.

My husband and I agreed to set aside x amount for our savings. Since each of the kids has piggy banks already, I want to make sure that we put our target amount weekly. In fact, I used the 52 Week Challenge I've seen on Facebook as a strategy for the kids 'saving. I will try my very best to keep up with it. Please wish me luck, guys.

Day 7 - EDUCATION has the Biggest Impact in my Life

Being born in a low-income family motivated me to give utmost important of education. Our family is quite big, I have 8 siblings. My late father is a farmer and my mom but never ceases to look for additional income while staying at home attending to our needs. I can say that she is a classic example of a work at home mom (WAHM). Back then, my parents reminded us to study hard because education is the only thing that we can inheret from them. And that was inculcated in my mind.

Since my elementary school years, I've been my parents that I will do my best to be a scholar when I reach college. Thanks God for the great opportunity of being accepted in a scholarship foundation way back year 1999. I survived the four challenging years and obtained a bachelor's degree in IT which served as my stepping stone to my present career.

I truly believe in the adage Education is the Greatest Equalizer.

Day 5 - Somewhere I've Been To

I've been to Club Balai Isabel, a nice resort near Taal Lake last April 2010. We had a three-day training at the resort. I love the sceneriesand the cozy atmosphere at the resort. I, together with other three colleagues stayed at the villa, just few steps away from the function room where our daily group sessions were conducted. We got to splash at their Infinity Pool, too!

Day 4 - A Habit that Wish I Didn't Have

Most of you will agree with me when I say that being a parent is the most challenging role in the whole universe. As parents, we don't get a monthly compensation, yet we have to do our very best to fullfill our duties to our children.

I've been researching about "positive parenting" ever since I become a parent. However, implementing it in my own household is easier said than done. I've been to a lot of hit and misses when it comes to practicing positive to my two young children.

One of the bad habits I wish I did not have is YELLING. No matter how much I tried to avoid it, I always tend to yell when the kids misbehaves or fail to meet my expectations. I know it has a negative impact to them. Yelling is a very bad habit. I have a long long way to go in the journey of motherhood. I will always try to avoid if not eliminate yelling...

It has been a year full of ups and downs for all of us. As we welcome the new year, please allow me to share my best events and experiences during the past 12 months.

JANUARY

January 1, 2012 - New Year's Day / Zaballa Family Reunion. Started the year positively with a day filled with sharing scrumptious meals, laughter, and picture-taking.

My husband turned 39 on January 23. We just greeted him via phone call since he was in Saudi Arabia at that time.

FEBRUARY

February 14, 2012 - This blog turned 4 this year, and as a way to thank my readers I hosted a simple giveaway. Thanks to all who supported and joined the Uncomplicated 4th Year Blog Anniversary Giveaway.

Febuary 28, 2012 - Iglesia Ni Cristo Grand Evangelical Mission (GEM). It was successfully conducted in key cities in the Philippines. Here in Metro Manila, the GEM was held in Luneta Grandstand. I am proud to be one of the attendees i this successful #IglesiaNiCristo gathering. This is the biggest event I've attended so far in my more than 10 years as member of Iglesia Ni Cristo.

MARCH

March 14 and 19, 2012 - Thea's Recognition/Thanksgiving Day and Graduation Day. My daughter has completed the first ladder of education which is preschool. She got a "Best in English" award.

APRIL

It was during this month when my husband arrived from the Middle East. It was also a month packed with out-of-town travels.

Likewise, we celebrated Thea's 6th birthday on April 25 2012 at the Manila Ocean Park.

MAY

May 1, 2012 - My husband's niece got married. We attended the ceremony which was held in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.

May 19, 2012 - Urban Development Department (UDD) first- ever Fun Olympics at the University of Makati Track Oval. I missed playing the fun games since I was assigned as one of the Game Marshalls. The event was successful and it was a great opportunity to bond and be physically fit at the same time.

May 24, 2012 - I celebrated my 35th birthday. Thea, hubs and I dined out. We missed the little man during the occasion since he was on a short vacation with her Lola in my hometown at that time.

May 26, 2012 - Thea's graduation day for the SMART Summer Program - Voice Lessons held at the University of Makati Theater. We were suprised because she was chosen as one of the Top Ten Outstanding graduate in her class.

May 29, 2012 - Yolyn, my husband's niece celebrated her 18th birthday with a dinner party with family and close friends. Thea performed two songs in the program, Jordin Spark's "One Step at a Time" and Taylor Swift's "Best Days".

May was such an eventful month!

JUNE

Start of classes in Philippine private and public schools. My daughter is already a Grade 1 pupil.

I had two out-of-town trips. One in Bolinao, Pangasinan for the annual planning workshop of Makati Gender and Development Council. On the following weekend, my officemates and I spent two days at my boss's resthouse in Zambales.

JULY

Thea's first choir performance in our church's CWS Thanksgiving Day.

AUGUST

August 18, 2012 - My husband left ~~again~~ for another year of overseas job.

August 20, 2012 - is our 7th wedding anniversary. I treated the kids with ice cream :D.

SEPTEMBER

I blogged about the Department of Education's new grading system which is a part of K-12 program.

OCTOBER

I won Php1,000 worth of gift certificate from Uniqlo. :)

NOVEMBER

November 2, 2012 - My son Yohan turned 2. We drove to Nueva Ecija and enjoyed the whole day swimming in a nice resort. On the following day, we had a simple celebration at home.

November 18, 2012 - I attended the Nuffnang Blogopolis 2012 at Makati Shang-rila. I blogged about my experience in my travel blog About Makati City. Aside from this rare experience as a blogger, the learnings and new friends I met, it was also my luckiest day of the year. I won a brand new iPhone 5 during the Networking Night which followed right after the conference.

DECEMBER

December 21, 2012 - UDD KPOP Live Year-end Party at Makati Palace Hotel. Our group performed dances from the music of the groups Big Bang and Girls Generation. Whoa, I got to practice my dancing prowess once again, hahaha.

So that's it! It took me few days to finish this year-ender special... Happy New Year to each and everyone of you. I wish you a blessed and peaceful year ahead.

My mother-in-law celebrated her 81st birthday last November 26 but the family gathering took place last Friday, November 30. We agreed to have a potluck lunch. My inlaws from Nueva Ecija and Rizal came over and only two family members were absent - my husband and his niece who are both working overseas.

While I am gaining back my strength after a tiring whole-day educational trip of my daughter, I decided to share dessert instead of main course. First, I thought of ordering Leche Flan but due to time constraint, it did not materialized hehehe. So, I tagged along the little lady and that's what we bought - a big tray of Crema De Fruta from our favorite bakeshop, Goldilocks. Luckily, the folks especially the youngsters with sweet tooth, loved it. One of them even approached me and said, "Tita, ikaw daw bumili nito, ang sarap!"

The Best Things in Life Are Free

For the past couple of weeks, I was confronted with a mixture of happy and sad incidents. The unhappy ones greatly affected my motivation to blog and do other things. I came to a point that I badly need a warm hug and I ended up asking for some even it's only virtual (by saying virtual, I mean asking for "cheer" me up messages via Facebook). Thanks to my friends who did extra mile to make me smile and comfort me during my gloomy days.

My son will turn 2 years old on Sunday, November 4. We will be having two simple get-together to celebrate his special day. On Friday, we will have a one day out-of-town trip/swimming with my in-laws in Nueva Ecija, our favorite destination during long weekends, holidays, and summer vacation. Then, on Sunday I will prepare my kids' favorite spaghetti and fried chicken, and of course with matching birthday cake for the little man. I just wish my OFW husband is here to celebrate with us. This is another milestone that he'll miss.
