He had two down in the show jumping, the first fence which quite a few took down and the planks where he did his trademark jump off three legs leaving one behind over the fence. This time he didn't get away with it!!!

He was really great round the cross country, just 1 second over and looking like he could do it all again.

He is home now for a holiday and is in fantastic shape. Spike the vet says he has legs of steel!

He now has 3 burghley and 2 badmintons under his belt and no cross country jumping penalties at any of them!
Not bad for a horse that everyone had given up on.

As always our thanks go to Mark and his team for another amazing few days.

Off to bed now, will leave all the unpacking and washing til tomorrow.
He's in 52nd place but hoping for the best improver trophy. There are 2 horses ahead of us for this so they need to have a fence down and we need to go clear!

It's a beautiful sunny day here and with the grand slam in play its going to be a very exciting afternoon. Dihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05391741058976888640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203331180757921099.post-3739743871598763812013-05-06T00:57:00.001-07:002013-05-06T00:57:16.815-07:00A fantastic day!Milo jumped a fabulous clear round yesterday. They got held on course for a short while which meant mark didn't have an accurate idea of his remaining time but they still got home just 1 second over.

Milo finished in fanatic shape, he was hardly blowing and this morning he is as fit as a fiddle.

Fingers doubly crossed for the show jumping. Dihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05391741058976888640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203331180757921099.post-88086091962417391522013-05-03T08:58:00.001-07:002013-05-03T08:58:45.396-07:00Glad that's over....Milo did his dressage test today at 11.30. Despite some nice early trot work he didn't really manage to contain himself and ended up with 67.8. He did however get three 7s for his first flying change, a big improvement on previous marks. He's not last but he's not far off!! We are now officially competing for the trophy given to the horse that improves the most after the first phase!

We've walked the course today and on first impressions it doesn't seem like a true 4* test. Sadly this is not good for milo, we'd like to see it a bit tougher allowing his jumping talent to show through.

All that said the weather is great and its a real privilege to be here and we're having a fantastic time. Off now to get changed for the cocktail party in the big house. More tomorrow.... He did a 1500metre canter that took just 3 minutes around the flat gallop. We then went across the road to tackle the hill gallop. He was amazing as always and took the 4 minutes on this track in his stride. Back across to the flat gallop for a final 1500 metre run (another 3 minutes). None of this was any problem to him at all and he was the perfect gentleman all the way round.

Today we went out for quiet hack for an hour to stretch his legs. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be back to schooling and then back to the gallops on Thursday.

And finally a picture of him relaxing out in the field.....

Milo has had great winter here at home. Having a rest but also building up condition for the season ahead. He's still at home with us at the moment as Mark's travel plans mean theres not much point in him going back just yet.

The exciting news is that he's entered for Badminton. He'll do Somerley OI and then Belton advanced as warm ups. He's so experienced now that we don't need to run him much at all before the big competitions.

He's been going well at home. I've been working him on the flat and out hacking. Owen Moore has very kindly been schooling him over show jumps. They still look just as wonderful together as they always did. He's started his canter work at both the Newmarket gallops and at Waresley Park. Both a bit of a trek from home but worth it for the lovely surfaces.

Dihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05391741058976888640noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203331180757921099.post-35656647165499223302012-10-27T11:25:00.000-07:002012-10-27T11:25:07.179-07:00Not our best day...Sadly Mark and Milo had a fall on the cross country today. Fortunately both horse and rider were very quickly back on their feet and both are fine.

Milo just had one of those days. He misread the second fence and hit it hard and then was ok for the first part of the course, stronger than usual but he got through all the difficult combinations that had been causing trouble all day. However in this part of the course the fences come thick and fast and with fairly flat ground Milo just kept gaining in pace.

Once Mark turned for home out on the racecourse Milo decided enough was enough and he was going to take over and at fence 19, nothing complicated, he charged at the fence, left a leg and tipped himself over and decanted Mark on the deck.

Of course we're all very disappointed but also very relieved that both are fine. We've had a lovely run of clear rounds with Milo so I suppose it had to stop sometime. Not the best way to end the season but not the worst either so here's looking forward to 2013.
He managed to stay pretty calm throughout his test and gained good marks with the usual exception of the changes. He ended up on 55.8, which, for him was a good score and put him 37th out of 62. Definitely well placed for his customary charge up the leaderboard.

The course is relatively straightforward but very big and the time will not be easy. All of which should be in Milo's favour. Ho doesn't run until after 4 tomorrow so plenty of time to see how the corse is riding.
He went on the lorry with the horses Mark took to Le Lion. Sadly for all those involved that event was abandoned after the dressage due to yet more rain. In case you think that just cant be possible here is a lovely picture of mark and milo trotting through the floods!!

They all left for Pau on Sunday. I think it rained the whole way down!! Today the sun is shining down there but according to the current forecast more rain is on its way....let's hope the forecast changes and milo gets a good shot at a 4* for the end of the season.

I leave on Thursday. I'm going down by train and should arrive about 8pm. They have so many entries that, contrary to the original schedule, some of the dressage will run Thursday afternoon. Lets hope milo is one of the Friday horses.

And a few more photos of Milo at Le Lion-d'Angers....

We could tell that he was feeling great as his dressage was not his best to say the least! To be fair the first part was OK but afer the second medium canter Milo decided it was all a bit too much and with the cross country and show jumping running very close to the dressage he decided that trot was something he didn't need to bother with any more! He did his trademark 'tranter' - a cross between trot and canter - for the final part of the test and consequently only just scraped under 40 with a score of 39.6

He show jumped very nicely but did just tap down one pole for 4 faults but then went cross country, clear with just 8 time faults without trying and in a snaffle! Mark didn't tell me he was going to try the snaffle until after the fact. He schools at home in a snaffle so he thought he'd give it a go in a competition and all seemed to go very well.

His final position was 20th out of about 36.

Trip to Pau is all booked so fingers crossed for good weather and a successful end to the season.
We trotted him up, did a flexion test all round and watched him on the lunge and on the gallops. He also had both front legs scanned to compare with the scans we took at the start of the year.

Considering its only just over 2 weeks since he completed Burghley he's in great shape. He's moving really well and looks very relaxed and all tests were fine. According to Mark he's going really well on the flat and is even doing some quite nice flying changes!!... perhaps Mark is still in some post-Olympic haze and is just dreaming this then but you never know.....

Mark's new yard, Badgerstown is really coming along, there's lots of work to do still but the new tack room is great as is the new, purpose built rug room. I got to ride Leo on the gallops and Sam out on the Ridgeway (see their blogs for more details).

Milo's next outing is a warm up run in the OI at Little Downham (1st October) and then on to Pau. I'm taking a leisurely trip down there by train on the 24th October, Pete's flying down and we're both flying back direct to City airport from Pau itself - marvellous !!
He's having a week off out in the field and will have a full health check in the next week or so to confirm that he's as we'll as he looks.

The plan is still to head off down to Pau to finish the season. Take a look at how he only takes 2 strides at the final element of Discovery valley - the only horse to do so all day. Also watch for both hind legs swinging out to the side over the boat at the lake crossing!
He rose up 52 places from his position after the dressage, an incredible feat!!

He was an absolute star and showed no signs of what used to be his trademark of dropping one front leg over a fence.

He cleared the post box bogey fence and then just clipped behind the top rail of the upright into the last combination.

Whilst it would have been great to have sneaked into the top 10 we are absolutely delighted. He is a brilliant jumping machine and Mark is without doubt still at the very top of his game.

Mark's cross country riding yesterday was a masterclass in how to ride with pace and rhythm and bring a horse home well within its limits. milo's recovery time was very quick, a great testament to Mark's fitness programme

Milo has now completed all his 4 4*s without a single cross country jumping penalty!

Assuming he continues to recover well from this weekend he will head to Pau in the south of France to finish his season with another 4*.

At least 1 horse in front of him failed so he'll start the show jumping in at least 14th place. Dihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05391741058976888640noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3203331180757921099.post-27035203430762911882012-09-01T19:48:00.001-07:002012-09-01T19:48:07.744-07:00What can I say?Mark was just absolutely brilliant today. He piloted Milo around Burghley to end up one of only 4 clears inside the time.

We couldn't be more thrilled!! The whole round was as smooth and as effortless as you could wish for.

Yesterday Mark told us he was going to take just 2 strides after the ditch to the second element of Discovery valley. I watched horses all day taking 3 strides and sometimes more. By the time it came to Milo's round I was beginning to be a little bit nervous about this strategy. Shows how much I know, 2 strides it was and how simple he made it look too. Just out and out brilliance.

Mark reported that after the first 2 fences he knew he was going to have a great round as Milo felt so good. They were never down on the time and really had their best 4* round together.

The soft ground didn't bother him, despite being last out and therefore running when the course was a little cut up in places. He recovered really well after the finish and fingers crossed should be fine for tomorrow.

And how we partied in the lorry park, you would have thought we'd won instead of climbing up from 64th to finish in 15th place overnight.

So we'll be holding our breath for the trot up and looking forward to the show jumping tomorrow afternoon.
