ใช้ Chi-Square ช่วยทดสอบความแตกต่างของข้อมูลแบบช่วง

ใช่ครับ! ในการตัดสินใจเชิงสถิติเราจำเป็นต้องใช้เกณฑ์อย่างมีเหตุและผล เครื่องมืทางสถิติที่เตรียมไว้ให้เราใช้งานในการตัดสินใจต้องบอกได้ว่าเยอะมาก(จนเราบางครั้งรู้จักไม่หมดและใช้ไม่หมดด้วย) ซึ่งในโพสต์นี้ผมอยากจะของแนะนำอีกตัวนึงคือ Chi-Square ซึ่งเราใช้ในการทดสอบความแตกต่างของข้อมูลแบบแบบช่วง ซึ่งง่ายต่อการวิเคราะห์และตัดสินใจ

Chi-Square ใช้ในการทดสอบความสัมพันธ์ของตัวแปรเชิงคุณภาพ 2 ตัว โดยมิได้มีการระบุว่าตัวแปรใดเป็นตัวแปรอิสระ และตัวแปรใดเป็นตัวแปรตาม นอกจากนั้นไม่สามารถระบุทิศทางและขนาดของความสัมพันธ์ได้ ข้างล่างเป็นสูตรคำนวณ Chi-Square โดยกำหนดให้

O คือข้อมูลที่จะนำมาทดสอบ

E คือค่า Expect ของข้อมูลนั้น

ตัวอย่างเช่น ผมมีเครื่อวจักรอยู่สามเครื่่อง เครื่องแรกผลิตชิ้นงานได้งานดี 90 จากร้อย เครื่องที่สองผลิตชิ้นงานได้งานดี 92 จากร้อย และเครื่องที่สามผลิตงานได้ชิ้นงานดี 87 จากร้อย เราต้องการทราบว่าประสิทธิภาพของเครื่องจักร สามเรื่องนี้ต่างกันหรืเปล่าเราทดสอบด้วย Chi-Square ได้ครับไปดูกัน

จากโจทร์ เราได้ O1=90, O2=92 และ O3 = 87 ส่วน E คือค่าเฉลี่ยของ O ทั้งสามครับ เพราะค่า Expected คือค่าที่ทั้งสามเครื่องควรจะผลิตได้ หรือค่าเฉลี่ยนั่นเอง ซึ่งในที่นี้จะเท่ากับ 89.66 จากนั้นเราก็หา Chi-Square value ครับโดย

((O1-E)^2)/E = 0.078
((O2-E)^2)/E = 0.001
((O3-E)^2)/E = 0.061

เราจะได้ผลรวมทั้งหมดหรื Chi-Square เท่ากับ 0.14

จากนั้นทำการหาค่า Chi-Square critical จากตารางครับ โดยดูที่ ค่าความมั่งใจ 95% (alpha 0.05) และ degree of freedom 2 (n-1 หรือในตัวอย่างคือ 3-1 = 2) เราจะได้ค่า Chi-Square critical เท่ากับ 5.991

การตัดสินใจคือ เมื่ไหร่ก็ตามที่ Chi-Square ที่ได้จากการคำนวณมากกว่าค่าที่ได้จากการเปิดในตารางคือข้อมูลต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ แต่ในกรณีนี้ Chi-Square ที่ได้จากการคำนวณน้อยกว่าจึงสุปรได้ว่า เครื่องจักรทั้งสามไม่มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัย

ใช้ F-Test ตรวจสอบผลการปรับปรุงกระบวนการ

เมื่ออาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา ผมได้มีการปรับปรุงขบวนการผลิตซึ่งเป็นขบวนการที่อิ่มตัวแล้ว การปรับปรุงจึงได้แค่ทำการลด variance ของ input โดย ทั้งก่อนการปรับปรุงและหลังการปรับปรุงเราทำการเก็บข้อมูล 750 data ดังใน file.

เพื่อทำการทดสอบว่า variance ก่อนและหลังปรับปรุงนั้นต่างกันหรือไม่ เครื่องมือที่เลือกใช้จึงเป็น F-test โดยทำการทดสอบตามขั้นตอนต่อไปนี้:-

ดาวน์โหลด excel file สำหรับ F-test.
คัดลอกข้อมูลที่เก็บมาจากการทดลองไปวางใน template.
ตีความหมายของผลลัพธ์ที่ได้.

P-Value น้อยกว่า 0.05 : variance ของ input ก่อนปรับปรุงและหลังปรับปรุงต่างกันอย่างมีนัย หลังการปรับปรุง variance น้อยกว่า.

โพสต์นี้ผมเองมีเรื่องง่ายๆ ในการติดตามการทำงานสำหรับลูกน้องมาแบ่งปัน แต่ความสำคัญของโพสต์นี้ไม่ได้อยู่ที่รูปแบบของเอกสาร หรือ Check list นั่นเป็นเหตุผลว่าในชื่อของโพสน์นี้ไม่มีคำว่า”เครื่องมือ_Tool” ซักแอ่ะนึง ปัญหาที่ผมเจอคือกิจกรรมหรืองานเล็กๆ น้อยๆ ที่มอบหมายให้ผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชาไปทำไม่ค่อยจะจบ (ปิด job ไม่ได้ว่างั้นเฮอะ) ย้ำกิจกรรมหรืองานเล็กๆน้อยๆ ซึ่งผมหมายถึงงานที่ไม่ต้องการการลุงทุน หรือทักษะในการแก้ไขปัญหาที่สูงมากซึ่งแน่นอนว่าผมประเมิณแล้วว่าเขาสามารถที่จะจบงานได้ด้วยตัวเอง ดังนั้นปัญหาที่เจอหลักๆ คือผู้ที่ได้รับมอบหมายไม่มีความรู้สิกเป็นเจ้าข้าวเจ้าของงาน_ownership ผมจึงลองใช้เทคนิคง่ายๆ คือ การบันทึกและติดตามมาใช้งาน โดยเอกสารที่ผมใช้แค่ check sheet ที่ออกแบบโดย excel ธรรมดา ซึ่งผมใช้เวลาไม่ถึง 5 นาทีด้วยซ้ำด้วยซ้ำในการสร้าง ความยากอยู่ตรงทุกเช้าต้องมานั่งแจกแจงงานอย่างละเอียด และทุกเย็นต้องมานั่งสรุปทุกวัน ซึ่งสร้างความลำคัญใจให้ทั้งสองฝ่ายไม่น้อย (ในช่วงแรกๆ)

จากนั้นผมก็ใช้ Check sheet นี้ในการติดตาม performance ของผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา โดยระยะแรกรายการงานค้างประจำวันเยอะมากแล้วก็ลดลงเรื่อยๆ ซึ่งปัจจุบันงานที่เป็นประจำวันก็เหลือค้างประจำวันจริงๆ ไม่ใช่รายการที่ควรเป็นประจำวันแต่ค้างเป็นสัปดาห์สองสัปดาห์เหมือนแต่ก่อน

ความสำคัญคือการใช้อย่างจริงจังและเป็นปกติวิสัยให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการทำงานประจำวัน และ feed back ให้น้องๆรู้ผลงานของตัวเขาเองทุกวัน และควรบันทึกงานต่อไปเรื่อยๆ งานไหนจบก็บันทึกค้างไว้ น้องๆ จะได้เห็นผลงานเค๊าตลอดครับ

ประเภทของข้อมูลทางสถิติ

ในทางสถิติได้มีการแบ่งข้อมูลที่นำมาใช้ประโยชน์ทางสถิติ 2 ลักษณะคือ ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative data) และ ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณ.

ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative data) หมายถึงข้อมูลที่แสดงถึงสถานภาพ คุณลักษณะ หรือคุณสมบัติ ของตัวอย่างที่เราจะทำการศึกษา ซึ่งส่วนมากแล้วการใช้ข้อมูลประเภทนี้ เราจะเห็นในการทำการวิจัยตลาดมากกว่า ไม่ค่อยเห็นใช้งานในส่วนอุสาหกรรม หรือ ในการวิเคราะห์ขบวนการผลิตมากนัก การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลพวกนี้ส่วนมากจะใช้เทคนิคการรวมกลุ่ม (Grouping) และใช้ความเชี่ยวชาญของผู้วิจัยในการแปรความหมาย ตัวอย่างข้อมูลกลุ่มนี้ได้แก่ข้อมูลที่ได้จากการสัมภาษผู้บริโภค เป็นต้น

ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณ (Quantitative data) หมายถึงข้อมูลที่อยู่ในรูปตัวเลข (numerical data) ที่แสดงถึงปริมาณ ที่นับได้หรือวัดได้ ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณก็สามารถ แบ่งได้สองประเภท ด้วยกันคือ ข้อมูลที่ไม่ต่อเนื่อง (discrete) คือค่าที่เป็นจำนวนเต็มหรือจำนวนนับ เช่น จำนวน รถยนต์ในกรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวนบุตรในครอบครัว หรือที่คนในโรงงานคุ้นเคยกันดีก็คือ จุดตำหนิ หรือ จำนวนของเสีย defected เป็นต้น ประเภทที่สองคือข้อมูลที่ต่อเนื่อง (continuous) คือค่าที่มีจุดทศนิยมได้ เช่น ข้อมูลที่อ่านได้จากเครื่องมือวัดต่างๆ นั่นเอง

ประเภทของข้อมูลเบื้องต้นมีความสำคัญอย่างมากที่เราจะต้องทำความเข้าใจ เพราะการเลือกใช้เครื่องมือต่างๆ จะต้องสอดคล้องกับประเภทของข้อมูล เช่นการใช้ Chi-Square เราใช้กับข้อมูลประเภทไม่ต่อเนื่อง การทดสอบความแปรปรวน (F-test หรือ ANOVA) เราใช้กับข้อมูลประเภทต่อเนื่องเป็นต้น

แนวคิดสำหรับการปรับปรุงขบวนการผลิตที่อิ่มตัว

ในโพสต์นี้ผมอยากจะนำแสนอแนวความคิดที่จะทำการปรับปรุงขบวนการผลิตที่อิ่มตัวแล้ว ขบวนการที่อิ่มตัวแล้วผมกำลังหมายถึงขบวนการที่ทำการผลิตมานานแล้วหรือขบวนการที่ได้รับการออกแบบและวางแผนมาจากต่างประเทศแล้วยกมาทำการผลิตในประเทศไทย ซึ่งถ้าทั้งสองประเภทรวมกันแล้วมันแทบจะทั้งหมดในประเทศไทย (อันนี้อนุมานเอาเองนะครับ ถ้าใครอยากรู้แน่ชัดต้องลองไปค้นคว้าดู).

ก่อนอื่นเรามาทำความรู้จักกับการปรับปรุงก่อนครับ ผมอยากแบ่งการปรับปรุงออกเป็นสองลักษณะครับคือ
การปรับปรุงแบบ Re engineering และแบบ Kaizen ซึ่งความแตกต่างของทั้งสองแบบคือ การปรับปรุงแบบ Re engineering เป็นการปรับปรุงที่เห็นผลแบบก้าวกระโดดครับ คิดใหม่ทำใหม่ซึ่งแม้ว่าจะเห็นผลแบบก้าวกระโดดแต่ก็ต้องลงทุนสูงเหมือนกันเพราะต้องเกี่ยวข้องกับนวัตกรรมใหม่ๆ และ/หรือ เทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ และอาศัยการพัฒนาจากบนลงล่าง ส่วน Kaizen เป็นการปรับปรุงแบบค่อยเป็นค่อยไป ผลลัพธ์จะเป็นการพัฒนาแบบขั้นบันไดไม่หวือหวาเหมือน Re engineering แต่ข้อดีของ Kaizen คือต้นทุนต่ำ(เจ้านายชอบ) เพราะไม่ต้องอาศัยนวัตกรรมใหม่ๆ และ/หรือ เทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ มากนัก และเป็นการพัฒนาแบบข้างล่างขึ้นสู่ข้างบน ส่วนรายละเอียดอื่นๆ ท่านที่สนใจสามารถค้นคว้าได้ตาม internet ครับ
โพสต์นี้ผมจะนำเสนอแนวคิดในการปรับปรุงขบวนการที่อิ่มตัวแล้วแบบ Kaizen ครับ เราไม่ต้องทำการลือขบวนการใหม่แต่อาศัยการปรับปรุงเล็กๆน้อยๆ เพื่อความชัดเจนให้พิจารณา model ตามรูปข้างล่างครับ

จากรูปนี้เราจะเห็นว่า output ของขบวนการเราจะมีประสิทธิภาพหรือไม่เราวัดกันที่ variance ของ output ซึ่งถ้าเราพิจารณาด้านซ้ายก็เช่นกันเราจะเห็น variances ของ input ซึ่งจะมากจะน้อยขึ้นอยู่กับความซับซอนของขบวนการเราครับ แนวคิดในการปรับปรุงก็ง่ายๆ ครับ (แต่ทำยาก) คือพยายามมองหา inputs ต่างๆ และทำการศึกษาพฤติกรรมของมันแล้วหาทางลด ซึ่งถ้าเราทำการลด variances ฝั่ง input ได้แน่นอนว่าฝั่ง output ก็จะลดตาม

สาเหตุที่ผมนำเสนอแนวคิดนี้เพราะว่าขบวนการที่อิ่มตัวเราไม่สามารถ (หรือทำได้ยากมาก) ที่จะหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง input กับ output ตรงๆได้นั่นเอง

และสุดท้ายเพื่อที่จะพิสูจน์ว่าที่เราทำการปรับปรุงไปนั้นมีผลอย่างมีนัยหรือเปล่าเราสามารถทำการทดสอบโดย F-test หรือ ANOVA ได้ เพราะ F-test/ANOVA จะเป็นการทดสอบ variance.

Casting Poly(methyl methacrylate) : PMMA

Post นี้ผมอยากแนะนำให้รู้จักกับวัสดุทางอุตสาหกรรมอีกชนิดนึงที่นิยมใช้งานกันอย่างกว้างขวาง

Acrylic Sheet หรือ Acrylic Glass เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) ที่ผลิตและมีการใช้งานกันอย่างกว้างขวาง เพราะคุณสมบัติที่โดดเด่นในด้านควางแข็งแรง และน้ำหนักเบา ซึ่งการขึ้นรูปหลักๆ จะทำได้โดยการ Extrusion หรือ Casting.

Casting เป็นวิธีที่นิยมนำมาใช้งาน โดยขั้นตอนในการ Casting Polymethylmethacrylate คร่าวสามารถทำได้โดยขั้นตอนดังนี้;-

1. Pre-polymerization เนื่องจาก PMMA มีการนำมาใช้ประโยชน์อย่างหลากหลาย คุณสมบัติของสินค้าหลังจากแข็งตัวแล้วจึงมีความสำคัญขั้นตอนนี้เราจะทำการปรุบปรุงคุณสมบัติโดยการเติม Additives และสีต่างๆที่ต้องการลงไป

2. Syrup Preparation, monomer ก่อนขบวนการ polymerization ที่สมบูรณ์จะอยู่รูปน้ำเชื่อม Syrup จะถูกเตรียมให้อยู่ในลักษณะที่เหมาะสมเพื่อควบคุม ปริมาณ และคุณภาพ (ลดสิ่งปลอมปน เช่น ฝุ่น และฟองอากาศ

3. Pouring เป็นการเท Syrup ลงใน Mold.

4. Complete polymerization เนื่องจากการผลิต PMMA เป็นขบวนการทางเคมีที่ทำให้ monomer ที่อยู่ในรูปโมเลกุลเดี่ยว(ที่อยู่ในรูปของเหลว) เกาะตัวกันเป็นลูกโซ่เพื่อเกิดโมเลกุลเชิงซ้อน(อยู่ในรูปของแข็ง) เป็นขั้นตอนที่ใเวลายาวกว่าขั้นตอนแรกและเป็นขั้นตอนที่ Syrup แข็งตัว ซึ่งเป็นขบวนการทางความร้อน

5. Peeling เป็นขั้นตอนการนำ PMMA ที่สมบูรณ์แล้วออกจาก mold.

6. Packing เป็นขั้นตอนการตัดให้ได้ขนาดที่ต้องการและบรรจุ

หลังจากเรารู้ที่มาของ PMMA แล้ว post หน้าเราจะมาดูว่าเราสามารถนำ PMMA ไปใช้งานอะไรได้บ้าง

There are many sizes and types of injection molding machines, but the machines all follow the sequence shown in this animation.

A mold is bolted into the Clamping section of the machine. The machine closes the mold, then applies a large force to “Lock” the mold closed. Inside the closed mold is a cavity that is the exact shape of the plastic part.

The Injection section of the machine has a hopper to hold plastic pellets; a barrel with heater bands to liquefy the plastic pellets; a feed screw to move the pellets forward in the barrel; a check valve to force the liquid plastic into the mold, and a nozzle to seal the injection section to the mold. The liquefied plastic is forced into the cavity of the mold with high pressure.

Once the liquid plastic has been injected into the mold, the machine goes into the Cooling phase. The liquid plastic must cool enough to turn solid so it takes on the shape of the cavity and stays that way. While the cooling take place, the screw will rotate, bringing in more pellets for the next part.

When the part is ready to be removed from the mold, the clamp will open, and the part will be removed from one half of the mold. Then the part will be Ejected from the other half of the mold, and the machine will start a new cycle.

Design agency Tin Horse has redesigned the packaging for Colgate Palmolive's range of washing-up liquids, creating a series of ergonomic packs.

Following a briefing from Colgate’s New York-based global design team, Tin Horse worked closely with the FMCG giant on all stages of the design process – from the conceptual stage, through to pack development, research and final design.

Tin Horse said that it has created a packaging concept that resonates with consumers on an "emotional" level across the globe.

The agency created a design that would work across a variety of pack sizes, with ergonomics to make them comfortable in the hands of consumers. The packs feature a newly-design closure that blends into the shape of the bottle, to create an uninterrupted silhouette.

Smaller-sized packs are produced in lightweighted PET, while the larger packs are made of polyethylene and feature a side-grip handle for improved pouring.

The new packs will appear on shop shelves in markets including the UK and North America.

Saudi joint venture company to manufacture ‘flexible’ products.

JEDDAH – Delaware, Ohio - based Greif Inc. said in a statement that it is forming a joint venture with a Saudi Arabian company to handle the production of “flexible” industrial packaging.

Greif said the joint venture will include a business that makes a type of container called “flexible intermediate bulk containers,” otherwise known as “big bags.”

Greif, through a subsidiary, has agreed to form a flexible products joint venture (JV) with National Scientific Company Limited (NSC), a subsidiary of Dabbagh Group Holding Co. Dabbagh is a leading privately held Middle East business group headquartered in Saudi Arabia. Greif will manage the JV, 50 percent of which will be owned by National Scientific, and 50 percent by Greif’s subsidiary.

The venture includes the flexible products business of Storsack, which was recently acquired by Greif. Storsack is the world’s largest producer of flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs), with 3,000 employees and 16 production facilities worldwide.

The joint venture will be completed after certain conditions are satisfied, including any necessary merger and regulatory approvals.

“This joint venture extends our core rigid industrial packaging business,” said Michael J. Gasser, Greif chairman and chief executive officer. “By joining forces with NSC and the Dabbagh Group, which has an established reputation as a trusted partner and pioneer of business within the Middle East and internationally, the JV will benefit from upstream advantages in the flexible products business.
“Also, the extension of Greif’s product portfolio to include flexible woven polypropylene packaging enables us to diversify deeper into markets such as the food and pharmaceutical industries.”

The JV expects to build a factory in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The factory will produce the woven polypropylene fabric used to manufacture the finished flexible containers. It will also produce flexible containers for regional customers.

Dr. Majed Al Kassabi, chairman of Dabbagh Group, said “together, NSC and Greif are in a prime position to leverage attractive growth opportunities in the flexible packaging global market. The combination of Greif’s industrial packaging expertise, NSC’s proven entrepreneurship and Saudi Arabia’s competitive cost basis will provide customers with unrivalled value.”

Acquiring Bemis’ Operations in packing

Exopack Holding Corp. is acquiring Bemis Co.’s plastics packaging operations in Menasha, Wis. and Tula, Okla., for around $81 million, subject to post-closing adjustments The acquisition includes production equipment and intellectual property.

Under the terms of an order signed by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia earlier this year, Bemis was required to divest the two facilities, which were part of its acquisition of Alcan Packaging Food Americas. The sale of the facilities is subject to regulatory approval.

Exopack is a manufacturer of paper and plastic packaging products. The company specializes in substrate development, film extrusion, printing, lamination, and converting of flexible packaging products.

“This purchase of the Menasha and Tulsa facilities reflects our commitment to our customers and other key stakeholders that we will continue to expand our capabilities and product offerings and strengthen the presence of the Exopack brand in the global marketplace,” says Jack Knott, Exopack chairman and CEO.

Microwave packaging market isn't cooked yet, says report.

Despite reaching a plateau of sorts, research firm Global Industry Analysts Inc. (GIA) believes the microwave packaging market will see growth over the near- to medium-term, and ultimately reach $2.52 billion by 2015. This growth, says the researcher, will be driven by trends toward take-home and packaged convenient frozen foods, increasing popularity of microwaveable foods and innovation in product offerings.

Although a look at recent packaging award programs confirms microwave packaging isn't short on innovation, GIA's study shows that growth in the U.S. microwave packaging market recently decelerated. Primary reasons for this sluggishness include a recently tough business environment in the upstream packaging industry, as well as reduced investments on new microwave packaging machinery and equipment and limited availability of financial resources for research and development thanks to the recession. However, as the economic downturn wanes and companies begin to invest in technology development and new applications again, GIA believes growth will return yet again.

As the report explains, the frozen foods market represents the largest end-use segment for microwave packaging, generating a share of about 57.83% in the total market revenue for the year 2009. Looking ahead, on the other hand, the fresh prepared foods market remains the fastest growing end-use segment over the analysis period 2007-2015.

Clear plastics group Plastech refurbs factory after Alplast move.

Clear plastic packaging maker Plastech has overhauled its Scottish facility after the Alplast business it acquired three years ago moved into the site.

Plastech bought Buckinghamshire-based Alplast in 2007 but moved the business's manufacturing to its own 4,000sqm facility in Glenrothes, Scotland at the end of last year.

Plastech has now completed a major refurbishment programme since the move in the first quarter of 2010.

The consolidated business can, Plastech said, provide clients with a one-stop-shop for the design and manufacture of clear plastic promotional packaging aimed at the retail sector.

Plastech managing director Tom Stirling said: "It made perfect sense to centralise the packaging operation at our headquarters, where we have a highly skilled staff and an excellent manufacturing and support infrastructure already in place."

Alplast was bought by Plastech as a going concern in November 2007 for an undisclosed sum. It was agreed by both parties that the operation would continue to operate out of its New Woad Farm base in Buckinghamshire for a further two years.

As part of the agreement, the former owners of Alplast retired from the business within a year of the deal, when the financial administration was absorbed into Plastech.

According to Stirling, Alplast staff were advised well in advance of the changes and were able to find new positions locally, or accepted an early retirement package before the relocation.

Plastech’s management said it incorporated Alplast’s plastic die-cutting, carton folding and gluing, and box lid and base processes its Glenrothes site to enable it to create better economies of scale.

Stirling added: "Our expansion has enabled us to branch out substantially and we now provide a complete portfolio of clear plastic packaging solutions."

Traditionally, Plastech has specialised as a thin-walled clear plastic extruded tubing specialist. Customers have included Revlon, Marks & Spencer and Cadbury's.

LyondellBasell adds HDPE caps and closure capacity

Polyolefins giant LyondellBasell says that the caps and closures market will be one of the key focus sectors for its new Hostalen ACP HDPE production unit, currently under construction at its Münchsmünster site in Germany.

The 250,000tpa unit will begin manufacturing multi-modal HDPE resin grades using LyondellBasell’s Advanced Cascade Process (ACP), for the closure, pipe and blow moulding industry in the second half of this year.

The ACP process is claimed to allow production of HDPE resins with tailor-made molecular weight distributions and co-monomer content, resulting in optimum stiffness/toughness balance, high ESCR and improved ease of processing.

“This state-of-the-art plant will bring additional capacity to the market and improve customer’s flexibility of supply within the EU,” the company said in a statement.

The Münchsmünster investment follows commercialisation of a 400,000tpa ACP unit at its Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company joint venture with Tasnee and Sahara Petrochemical Company at Al-Jubail Industrial City in Saudi Arabia.

The SPEC facility, which started production in April last year, also includes 400,000tpa of LDPE capacity using LyondellBasell’s Lupotech T process.

The company is also expanding its portfolio of HDPE resins for the caps and closures market. The company’s multi-modal Hostalen ACP resins are said to be characterised by excellent organoleptic properties, combined with very good ESCR and optimised processing.

Designed to complement the company’s existing closure resin products, the Hostalen ACP product range is supported with a number of slip additive packages designed to meet a wide range of torque requirements.

According to LyondellBasell, industrial trials at closure makers have shown that total cycle time savings can be achieved at melt temperatures up to 20°C below standard grades with no evidence of mould filling problems.

In addition to the scope for process energy savings, the better balance of stiffness and toughness exhibited by the Hostalen ACP resins is said too provide potential to reduce closure weight or to incorporate more complex features into the closure designs.

Hostalen ACP resins are produced at LyondellBasell production sites, including the new line at Münchsmünster in Germany, and are available on a global basis.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (DPS) has announced its five-year goals for improved environmental and social performance across the company's operations and has released “Sustainability in ACTION,” its inaugural corporate social responsibility (CSR) report. The 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility Goals address the company's operations throughout North America and the Caribbean, and provide the framework for the inaugural CSR report.

"Our evolution into an integrated beverage business has strengthened our ability to serve our customers and consumers while maintaining our responsibility to serve the needs of society and the planet we all share," says Larry Young, DPS president and CEO. "Setting and achieving long-term goals to improve our environmental and social performance is a vital part of achieving sustainable growth, because these goals reflect the best interests of the people who make, sell, buy, invest in, and enjoy our brands every day."

For example, DPS is addressing environmental sustainability by reducing fuel consumption with logistics software that configures shorter, more efficient delivery routes and by installing idle shutdown and electronic speed limiters.

The company also has numerous package engineering projects under way that are producing lighter plastic bottles across most sizes and formats and is identifying opportunities to incorporate PCR content into PET containers. And by using de-ionized air rather than water to rinse containers on most production lines, the company is conserving approximately 10,000 gallons of water per day on each line.

Pack offers packaging line, material efficiencies

Administration approval in October 2008, Pfizer launched its overactive bladder (OAB) treatment Toviaz™ in a carded blister housed in a paperboard outer sleeve and bundled with regulatory literature for presentation to consumers by prescribing physicians.

Last year, Pfizer worked with AmerisourceBergen company Anderson Packaging to transition to Anderson’s proprietary IntuiDose™ child-resistant compliance-prompting format for the physician’s sample package. The four-panel wallet pack contains 14 8-mg doses. The user pushes each pill out of each blister cavity from a three-ply cold-formed base film. The lidding is a 15#, paper-supported, push-through 0.008 foil. The pack uses a 16-pt board stock, coated on two sides (C2S), with a heat-seal coating applied on press during printing to help reduce overall cost and material use. Also, there are 4-mg and 8-mg strength versions, distinguished by an orange or green color scheme.

The Toviaz pack recently was honored as the 2009 Compliance Package of the Year by the Healthcare Compliance Packaging Council, and as the first Distribution Management Award-winner by the Healthcare Distribution Management Assn.

The new pack allows Pfizer to deliver Toviaz in a more effective and informative patient-friendly format, at the same time achieving substantial production efficiencies and cost reductions.

The package includes a daily tracker, functioning as a guide and diary to track goals and health improvement. The program also provides a tool to review progress with the physician over the 12-week course of treatment. A customer response card is integrated in the pack, allowing patients to complete a questionnaire and enroll in an interactive treatment program to ensure success. Finally, the pack includes full patient prescribing information. Tablets are laid out in a simplified 14-day regimen, including instructions about how to properly ingest the medication.

The IntuiDose package features a novel approach to providing the highest levels of child resistance while at the same time making the product easily accessible to adults. The simplified push-through design focuses on providing a consumer-friendly solution to medication management. The use of a unit-dose compliance-prompting package facilitates medication adherence and effectiveness of treatment, guiding patients to fill their prescription and maintain compliance over the course of treatment.

Production/packaging efficiency gains

According to Anderson Packaging, the transition to the IntuiDose design provided opportunities for gains across the Toviaz supply chain for Pfizer, most notably in packaging operations. The production of the initial Toviaz sample design involved a multiple-stage packaging system. Packaging was initiated with the primary packaging of the Toviaz tablets into a cold-formed blister design. In a second operation, blisters were heat-sealed into paperboard cards. Cards were then loaded into paperboard sleeves, ensuring the activation of the child-resistant feature. In a final operation, completed packages were bundled with patient literature and loaded into shipping containers for distribution.

Production of the improved Toviaz design utilizing the IntuiDose delivery system substantially reduced product handling through the simplification of the package assembly and incorporating highly automated packaging systems.

Like the original assembly, the process begins with blistering of the tablets. The improved IntuiDose design assembly reduces overall packaging operations to two steps. Upon the completion of the blistering operation, blisters are heat-sealed into a wallet format. Each piece of marketing and regulatory literature is applied to the package in an integrated process, with high-speed gluing and verification. The improvement in package design reduces material handling, decreases material consumption, minimizes the generation of scrap, and ultimately reduces processing time, resulting in logistical efficiencies

EU demand for stand-up pouches to grow 9.1%

The advantages of (SUP) packaging, such as as light weight and excellent oxygen barrier properties, will drive the European market to grow 9.1% over the next five years, according to PCI Films Consulting.

In the study ‘The European Market for Stand-Up Pouches 2010’, PCI says demand grew by 10-15% during the five years up to 2008. Demand dipped during the economic recession of 2009 but strong demand is expected to return over the next few years.

In 2009, nearly 19 billion SUPs were supplied in Europe, accounting for 5% of the total value of converted flexible packaging in Europe. This figure is predicted to rise to over 30 billion units by 2014.

“In recent years, attitudes towards the SUP have become much more positive as brand owners, retailers and consumers recognise the attractions of this format as a cost-effective, convenient and environmentally superior alternative to rigid packaging,” says report author Paul Gastor.

Last year, demand in Europe totalled 18.6 billion units, giving the market a value of €575m. Some 975 million square metres of laminate was used to make SUP pouches, a third or which ended up as wet pet food packaging.

PCI attributes the popularity of SUPs to a number of factors, including the development of new packaging machinery, which delivers higher production and filling speeds, as sell as improvements in sealing efficiencies. Brand owners are also offering consumers benefits such as easy-open closures, says the firm.

However, the SUP industry will need to invest to bring the entire process to the higher packing line speeds of the more conventional rigid packaging formats.
