Elevated hormone levels can cause the sebaceous (oil producing) glands to form greater amounts of sebum (oil). These glands are attached, under the skin, to the sides of each hair shaft, and together form a unit called a follicle. The opening of the skin is referred to as a pore. The oil produced is necessary to lubricate the hair and skin. Most of the time the oil glands produce the right amount of sebum, and the pores are fine. When excess oil production is triggered, the pores can get clogged and bacteria begin to multiply, which leads to acne. Sometimes the pore is so blocked that it ruptures the skin and spills the contents into the surroundings. This causes inflammation, irritation and results in the deep "underground" pimple we know as an acne nodule or cyst.

Recent studies have shown that the typical Western diet contributes greatly to the incidence and severity of acne. Our diets are rich in refined carbohydrates and sugars. This triggers our bodies to produce a surge in insulin. It also causes an excess of male hormones which encourage the skin to excrete more oil and subsequent abundant growth of bacteria. Studies have shown that populations not fed on a Western diet are virtually acne-free. Yet when they move to cities and change their diet, they begin to experience acne for the first time ever.

Cleanse twice daily. It is not necessary to wash your face every hour, as this can strip off too much oil from your skin and trigger over-production to compensate.

Maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet.

The Department of Dermatology at the University of Iowa Hospital describes healthy skin as "a multi-layer cake covered by a single sheet of clear plastic food wrap to keep it fresh. The plastic food wrap prevents the frosting and underlying layers of the cake from drying out by preventing loss (evaporation) of the water from the cake into the air. It is the moisture in the cake that gives it its freshness. The outermost layer of the skin, which acts like the plastic food wrap and is about the same thickness, is called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum consists of dead skin cells embedded in a mixture of natural oils (lipids) that are made by underlying living skin cells. These natural skin oils keep the water inside our body from escaping into the air and also keep irritating substances and germs from entering the body. Both the skin oils and 421 Sensation the dead skin cells hold a certain amount of water in the stratum corneum and it is this stratum corneum water that helps keep the skin soft, pliable and smooth."

Just keep an eye on how long your nails are & give them a trim before they start rubbing against your shoes & causing pain. Clean, well-cared for & neatly trimmed toenails mean comfortable, healthy feet. Your feet take a beating during the day, so keep toes in tip-top shape with proper, regular trims to prevent foot problems.

Trimming:

your toenails may seem simple enough, but it isn't something to be done carelessly. While most people don't need to visit a professional to take care of their toes - people with diabetes are an exception they need to be sure they're clipping their nails properly to reduce the risk of future foot problems.

You depend on your feet, so make sure you give them the care they deserve. Before you break out the nail clippers, you should understand why it's so important that toenails be cut the right way. Ingrown toenails, (that become lodged in the skin instead of growing normally) are a primary reason for foot pain & can lead to serious infection.

Some nails just naturally grow in & no matter what you do conservatively; it's not going to address the problem. Instead, it needs to be addressed surgically. But if you learn how to cut your toenails properly in the first place, you may be able to protect your feet from ingrown toenails.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms usually start within hours & peak two to three days after your last cigarette. Sometimes they last just a few days, but they might continue for several weeks. Here's how to stay strong in your resolve to break your nicotine addiction.

It's not surprising that smokers trying to quit have cravings for cigarettes. They're dealing with both nicotine withdrawal symptoms & an entrenched habit.

The smoking habit is usually extremely strong & smoking has become linked with certain activities & daily routines. Perhaps you're used to having a cigarette first thing in the morning, or with coffee, or while you work. If that's the case, then it's very likely that you'll have cravings for cigarettes at each of these times.

Start to wean yourself from cigarette cravings by breaking familiar patterns that are linked to smoking:

If you're in the habit of smoking after meals, make sure to leave the table as soon as you finish eating. Start a new, healthy habit, like taking a short walk after each meal.
Whenever possible, avoid situations where you know you'll have the urge to smoke, particularly in the first few days of nicotine withdrawal.

Exercise:

It reduces cravings, helps relieve stress, improves mood & can help to keep you from gaining weight.

Drink fluids:

Smoking is expensive:

Set aside the money you're saving by not buying cigarettes & use it for a treat, or save up for a vacation or a major purchase. Be sure to congratulate yourself for going without cigarettes.

Standing up straight is only part of the picture: learn how the way you sit, sleep & carry items can keep you pain-free

Poor posture is easy, whereas adapting habits of good posture often requires conscious effort. Most people do not think about their posture until someone brings it to their attention. The benefits of good posture far outweigh the ease of slouchy poor posture.

You could say that poor posture habits have followed trends in society. Children carry huge overloaded backpacks, adults lug briefcases to work & thousands of people spend hours hunched over computers, whether for work or play.

Poor posture is not only habitual, but is also seen in people with low self-esteem, degenerative problems affecting the spine, pain-causing muscle guarding & obesity.

Change takes willpower. However, the rewards of good posture are well worth the effort. You will feel great; your physical appearance will look tall & confident.

The body is straight, but not robotic. The appearance is relaxed, as the ears, shoulders, hips, knees & ankles align in one straight line. If you hung an imaginary plumb line from the earlobe, the line would hang straight through the middle of the anklebone. Good posture means there is musculoskeletal balance. This helps to protect the joints in the spine from excessive stress. It also guards against injury & possible deformity. Good posture is a great tool to help prevent pain.

Starting Your Day

Stand up & stretch your arms above your head. Do the hug your best friend. Wrap your arms around your body & turn as far as you can to the left, then to the right.
Exercise regularly to keep the abdominal muscles strong to help support the spine.
Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes. Choose shoes that offer good foot support & comfort. Some styles can affect the body's center of gravity. Flat shoes are better.
Look at yourself in the mirror. Is your posture good? Think about your posture & how to maintain it throughout the day's activities. Practice makes perfect!

Purses, Backpacks & Briefcases

Carry only the items that are required for each particular day. Avoid a heavy purse, tote, or bag worn over one shoulder. This can place too much weight on one side of the body & can cause neck, shoulder, & back pain. If you must use a bag or briefcase with a single strap, make sure the strap is padded & wide. Wear a strap that is long enough to place over the head, rest the strap on the side opposite the bag or briefcase. This can help to distribute the weight more evenly. People of all ages use backpacks today -preschoolers, students, office employees, teachers, backpackers, even grandparents! Many people pack the backpack to its absolute capacity. Some children carry almost as much weight in their backpack as they weigh! A loaded backpack should not exceed 15 percent of the body's weight & never more than 12.5 kg. Consider the following backpack tips:

Choose a backpack made of a lightweight material.
Make sure the shoulder straps are adjustable, wide & padded. A backpack with a waist/hip strap is preferable. Wear the pack with both shoulder straps & hip strap.
Pack heavier items close to the back. Backpacks with many compartments will help you equalize & distribute the load. Pointy objects should be packed away from the wearer's spine.
Parents can talk to their child's teacher & arrange for a separate set of books to be kept at home, eliminating the need to haul books back & forth.

Working at a Desk

Choose office furniture that is ergonomically designed & that fits your body.
Sit with your back against the back of the chair with knees at hip level. Consider using a footrest. A small pillow or rolled towel placed at the lower back can offer needed support.
The workstation or desk should be at elbow height. Adjust chair height to meet this need.
Sit with your shoulders straight & parallel to the hips.
Don't slouch or lean forward to view work or the computer monitor. Either move closer to the work or move the work closer to you. Tilt the monitor so the center of the screen is at eye level for easy viewing.
Don't cradle the phone between your head & shoulder! It is much better to use the speakerphone or hold the phone in your hand.
Get up, walk tall & stretch often.

Going to Sleep

A firm mattress will help keep your spine aligned! However, a few other tips to maintain great posture during sleep include:

Don't sleep on your stomach. Sleep on your side or back.
When lying on your back, place a pillow under your knees. This will ease low-back tension.
When lying on your side, place a pillow between slightly bent knees. This will help keep the spine straight.
Although oversize cushy pillows are inviting, they do not benefit your spine. Instead, use a pillow that allows your head to align with the rest of your body.

A career woman is a very busy woman. She has not only to go to office & handle a lot of exacting chores but she has also to look after the household following her responsibilities at the desk. This leaves her with little time to look after herself & yet she needs to look neat & attractive in her place of work.

What you require is to take one day off every week & reserve it for beautifying yourself. Make it Sunday when usually everyone has a holiday. This day should belong exclusively to you. Rest, relax, beautify yourself & see how the next day you will not only look more beautiful & attractive but be lighter/brighter both in body & spirit. This one day beauty care is not only meant to beautify you but it is also health-giving & prolongs your youthfulness. On this day be as lazy as possible, stay in bed as long as you like & stay off the telephone because talking takes as much energy as working.

Take a light diet on this day to give your over worked digestive system a rest. Here is a sample of the Sunday diet:

BREAKFAST

One glass orange juice.
Cornflakes with milk.
Tea or coffee.

MID-MORNING

One cup skimmed milk with 1 biscuit. (You can substitute milk for tea or coffee.)

LUNCH

Steamed chicken or fish.
One green or yellow vegetable.
One salad of raw vegetables.
Fruit of choice.

MID-AFTERNOON

Tea, coffee, milk or soft drink with 1 biscuit.

DINNER

Soup.
Mutton stew.
Bread.
Fruit.

BEDTIME

One cup skimmed milk with honey.

After taking your breakfast, rest for a while & then go in for your bath. Lock yourself in & get to work. Start with chores like defusing your legs or arms, dealing with superfluous hair on the face, washing & setting your hair & doing your nails. All these chores need to be done regularly for a well-groomed look.

Fill the bathtub with lukewarm water & put in a few drops of your favorite essence. Then, lie back in the tub & try to keep your mind blank think of absolutely nothing for 10 minutes or try to dwell upon happy things. Let your arms & legs float in the water, splash them around a little & let the ripples in the bath water float over you. Get out of the bath, pat yourself dry & give yourself a facial.

You already know some of the cardinal makeup sins - like sleeping with your makeup on (clogs pores!) & sharing your makeup (you'll also be sharing bacteria!). But some other makeup mistakes are a little less obvious. The most dreadful mistake is when the base of the lower eyelashes is traced with a thick eyeliner pencil & not blended in. This not only looks unsophisticated but it also makes eyes look much smaller.

And here are six other faux pas to avoid when applying makeup.

Foundation that’s Too Dark or Too Light: When using, it's imperative that you wear a shade that matches your skin tone exactly. Otherwise, you risk ending up with a face a different shade from the rest of your body, not to mention ending up with the telltale foundation line around the chin that screams you're a makeup novice.

When choosing the right foundation, it's best to go to a makeup counter where you can test three different shades - one you think is the closest match, then one a shade lighter & one a shade darker. Dab the color on your cheekbones & jaw line to get the most accurate assessment. Pick the one that blends effortlessly into your skin (it should disappear on your face). And don't forget that you may have to switch foundation seasonally.

Visible Lip Liner: When it comes to applying lip liner, some women make the mistake of choosing a shade that's much darker than their lipstick. The easy remedy is to choose a lip liner either the exact same shade as your lip color - or in a neutral color.

Lipstick Feathering: As your age, your natural lip line begins to fade & fine lines start to form. Your first line of defense is to trace the edges of your mouth with a lip liner (the same color as your lipstick or in a skin-toned shade). After applying lipstick, blot with a tissue. If you find your lip color is still too slippery, consider switching to matte or semi-matte lipsticks. Using semi-permanent lip stains is another way to prevent feathering.

Pores are essential to your skin's health by providing oil to keep skin soft & hydrated. If you can squeeze just thirty minutes out of your day, you can fit in a great workout.

Don't wait for extra time to show up in your day because it won't. Mark off 30 minutes for exercise, just as you would schedule a doctor's appointment & then make it a priority. It matters little if it's morning, noon or night. Choosing a time that works within your schedule will help you establish a permanent routine & keep other obligations from undermining your plan.

For many people, an exercise partner is the glue that helps you stick to your commitment. Choose someone with compatible fitness level & goals so that you can each progress comfortably together & feel successful.

If you are not accustomed to exercise, don't try to do too much, too soon. Walking is a great way to begin an exercise program. It's simple you already know how to do it! It requires no special equipment other than a good pair of walking shoes & best of all, you can do it anywhere.

Consistency is a key ingredient for any successful fitness regime, so seek out activities that you like doing. It doesn't matter what the latest craze is that's guaranteed to bum thousands of calories per workout. If you don't enjoy doing it, you will never keep it up. Choose activities that add joy, not dread, to your day.

You need cardio, strength training & flexibility-based activities for a well-rounded exercise program. Rather than walking the same route every day, mix things up by doing some strength training a couple of days per week.

On some busy days, 30 minutes straight is just not happening. On those days, three sessions of 10 minutes of exercise is better than writing it off completely. Breast Cancer Myths

Chances are you've heard at least a few myths about what causes breast cancer or increases your breast cancer risk A little myth-busting is in order so you can get your breast cancer facts straight.

Underwire Bras Cause Breast Cancer

That's absolutely untrue. This is based on an old theory that an underwire bra would reduce lymphatic drainage & increase breast cancer risk. It was not based on any data whatsoever. Constriction of the breast, whether from an underwire bra or any kind of compression garment, does not affect breast cancer risk.

Antiperspirants Cause Breast Cancer

There have been no studies to suggest a link between antiperspirants & breast cancer. There are two possible points of origin for this cancer myth.

i) Parabens: These chemical preservatives are used in some antiperspirants & some other products. They may increase estrogen levels, which is linked to breast cancer risk But there is no decisive link. Check ingredient labels if you are concerned. Look for the ingredients methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben. However, most brands no longer include these ingredients.

ii) Mammogram preparation: Antiperspirants contain some aluminum, which may show up on mammograms as a false-positive result. One thing that is important for women to know is that when they go for their mammograms, they shouldn't wear antiperspirants.

Radiation from Screening Tests Causes Cancer

Although mammograms do give off a small amount of radiation, the radiation dose in a mammogram is less than in a standard chest X- ray. It is such a low level that it wouldn't increase breast cancer risk Women should also know that MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) & ultrasounds, which may also be used to screen for breast cancer in some women, contain no radiation at all.

Exposure to Air Causes Cancer to Spread

That is untrue. Patients are naturally worried because cancer does have the potential to spread (called metastasis), but it is not caused by your cancer surgeon cutting into a tumor for a biopsy or to remove it.

You Have to Have a Family History to Get Cancer

Women who don't have a family history of breast cancer are surprised when they get breast cancer. Family history is a well-established risk factor. So well- established that some women may believe it is the only risk factor, but it's not. Less than 10 percent of breast cancer patients get it because of a familial history.

There's Nothing You Can Do about an Inherited Risk

A strong family history is a cancer risk factor, but just because women in your family have had breast cancer does not mean you are destined to get it. Genetic testing will help you understand your inherited risk & allow you to make choices about your future care. Additionally, research shows that a low-fat diet combined with physical activity reduces breast cancer risk. If you have a family history, you should do everything that you can to decrease your risk.

Breast Cancer Occurs Only in Older Women

Increasing age is a risk factor for breast cancer, so the older you are the more likely you are to get breast cancer. However, that doesn't mean younger women aren't vulnerable. Breast cancer can be diagnosed at any age. It tends to be more aggressive in younger women.

Plastic Surgery Causes Breast Cancer

The good news for women who want to enhance or reduce their bust size is that there is no link between breast plastic surgery & increased breast cancer risk Implants can make mammograms more difficult, but they do not make cancer more likely. Women who have breast reduction surgery may actually see a decrease in breast cancer risk. Getting a breast reduction can reduce your risk of breast cancer by about 60 percent, depending on how much they take.

Double Mastectomy Prevents a Return of Breast Cancer

Removing a breast that has not had breast cancer does prevent breast cancer in that breast, but removing a breast that already has cancer still leaves you with a 3 to 4 percent risk of recurrence. Your survival is based on the first cancer, not on the removal of additional breast tissue.

Mammograms Aren't Accurate Anyway, So Why Bother?

Recent controversy about the right time for women to begin having mammograms - whether they should begin at age 40 or age 50 - has left some women feeling the screening test may not be worth while. Younger women often have denser breast tissue than older women, who have more fat tissue in the breast. The denser your breasts are, the less accurate your mammogram is going to be. Having a bad mammogram is better than having none.

Self-Exams Aren't Necessary

The research is inconclusive on this question. Most of the women are not doing self-exams. But there's no downside - it's cheap & easy to do. Only good things can come from being familiar with the shape of your own breasts.

Abortion & Miscarriage Increase Breast Cancer Risk

While there is some evidence that having children before the age of 30 can reduce the risk of breast cancer, there is no research to support the idea that the early end of a pregnancy through miscarriage or abortion could increase breast cancer risk.

As you get older, your ability to quickly use up energy dirninishes & your metabolism can slow. As cells age, they do metabolize less rapidly. Older people also tend to have less muscle mass than younger people, which translates to a reduced metabolic rate. While you can't make yourself younger to speed up your metabolism, being diligent about getting enough exercise many people tend to manage as they age. Adults 65 & older should get two & a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week & do strengthening exercises on all the body's major muscle groups at least twice a week.

Avoid Stress

When your nerves are frazzled, your body releases cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal system that is linked to weight gain. There are definitely established links between psychological stress & the adrenal system. To make sure that stress isn't making it harder to take off kgs, try to calm yourselfby reducing the controllable stressors in your life. For example, if heavy traffic makes you nervous, avoid the roadways during rush hour. Regular physical activity, deep breathing & even professional assistance from a psychologist or counselor may also be helpful.

Lack of Sleep

Getting too little shut-eye can significantly alter your body's processes enough to predispose you to gain weight. There was a recent study where healthy volunteers were subjected to poor sleep. Even over one night, the lack of sleep was significant enough to disrupt their metabolic pattems & give them more insulin resistance, which is a risk factor for diabetes. Insulin resistance has also been associated with obesity. To increase the chances of boosting metabolism, adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Exercise for Boosting Metabolism

Exercise not only helps you expend more calories while you're physically active, but there's also some evidence that it may increase your resting metabolic rate. To make sure you get enough exercise for boosting metabolism, set aside a dedicated period of time, rather than trying to accomplish it during the course of your everyday activities. Adults ages 18 to 64 need about two & a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, as well as strengthening exercises for all muscle groups twice a week.

Not Eating Enough

It may be tempting to severely restrict your calories or skip meals to lose weight, but that may be a self-defeating practice. One such medication, olanzapine (Zyprexa) has been shown to promote weight gain. Scientists aren't sure why it happens. If you feel your medications may be causing your body to hang on to extra weight, talk to your physician, who may be able to switch you to another drug that's less likely to have those unwanted side effects.

Exposure to Colder Temperatures

There is some evidence that exposure to colder temperatures causes an increase in metabolism, as the body attempts to stay warm. However, research in this area is scarce. People living in cold climates may be more likely to gain weight because the low temps have a negative effect on their moods. When you have long winters, you can have depression that can cause people to gain weight. If you live in a cold place, be extra vigilant for symptoms of depression & talk to your doctor if the blues don't go away.

Medical Conditions

There are some medical conditions that can make losing weight more difficult. For example, thyroid problems like hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, can cause body functions to slow down & weight gain to result. Medications are available to relieve most of these conditions or eliminate their symptoms. If you've been trying to lose weight for some time & have been unsuccessful, ask your doctor about screening tests for these conditions.
