I really want to try and post more often, it just never seems to get done. I have been back from my trip to Mexico. The beach in Cabo San Lucas is just awesome. I could really spend some time there. Too bad it is such a tourist spot now, I understand it use to be a sleepy little fishing village. Oh well I guess that is what cruise ships will do for a place.

Speaking of cruise ships, Princess lines will be embarking from Galveston in 2012. That will be nice for me since I will be able to drive or fly Southwest pretty inexpensively and the cruises have come down a bunch in price. My son Chris lives in College Station just an hour and a half away and he likes to cruise. I guess I will have to start saving my nickel and dimes.

That is about it for my every couple of months blog. I really hope it is not two months again, but we'll see.

Time Flies

Well I guess it has been over two months since I posted here. I do not know where the time goes. I have not been doing much of anything special, I guess that must be pretty boring. I have been going out to the shooting range on weekends. Just bee shooting the falling plates there. A lot of fun and good practice. My best friend and wife Blu has been going with me and shooting her S&W .22a at the plates also. We have another cruise coming up next month and are really looking forward to that. It is real relaxing spending time on a ship at sea. A bit of weight will be gained since all you have to do is pretty much eat and sit in the sun on the decks.

Well I suppose that is all for now.
Well it has been another long while since I last posted anything. I think it is about time. I am looking forward to a Thanksgiving weekend in Rockport, Texas. My Mom, Dad, brother Matt and sister Gina are all going to be there. My Mom's brother, his wife and my cousins are also coming. We have all rented a place at the Pelican Resort Lodge. I think everyone involved is looking forward to the trip. It should be a bunch of fun.

Nothing much new here

Well I have aged a bit more. I guess we all have. Nothing much new going on at my end of Texas. I did do an upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. Seems to be fine. I have not noticed much difference from 10.04 but I did it just because. I did not do the upgrade on my server or on my two mythtv boxes. I just prefer to leave Long Term Support on my server. I have been burned upgrading my mythtv ( http://www.mythtv.org/ ). I have been burned on past upgrades and don't want to blaze any trails. I will wait for some feedback from others that have gone where I have not chosen to go. I don't know what I did before I had Mythtv.

I do know I have just finished the first two of Stieg Larsson trilogy. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl that Played with Fire. I haven't had time to go out and get the third book. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest. I can't wait to find out what happens to Lisbeth. The first two were outstanding.

Well that is about it for this entry. I hope to have another soon.

Sundy morning comin' down

Well I have been pretty busy the last couple of days. I woke up yesterday to find out a surge had taken my fileserver system board out. Luckily I my brother had just given me his old computer. I quickly installed ubuntu LTS server and had it back up in about 2 hours. I still have some restoring to do. I think I am going to take the hard drive out a put it in another computer and recover what I can. My last backup is about three months old. I know, I know. I should know better.

Well I guess I will have a bit of time today. The picture is what I woke up to this morning. This is from Karl that hit Mexico yesterday. Weather service says we had an inch of rain. Yeah right! Looks like I will have plenty of time on my hands today. Gotta watch football of course.

Too long

Darn it has been too long since my last blog. I have been so busy at work with a major equipment replacement project that I have just not had time to blog. I don't really have much time right now, but thought I would put something up just to say I did. Nothing new, just the heat. This is supposed to be the hottest day of the year. I hope it was because then it will be over and we will only get cooler. Whale Slideshow

I made it back from vacation in Alaska, I went on a photo safari into Stevens Pass just a few miles from Juneau looking for whales to photograph. Well we found them. There was a young male that was having a great time splashing in front of the cameras. It was almost like he was showing off for the group. The tour stayed and watched as long as was allowed. In Alaska a boat can only do the kind of activity we did for 30 minutes. This is a law. Our guide got so excited that he took his camera out and took a few shots. After that was over we went about 5 miles deeper into the channel and came upon a group of whales feeding. There were 8 to 12 females using a process call bubble netting. This is done by surrounding the school of fish and exhaling creating a wall of bubbles that the schooling fish are afraid to swim through. The whales then come up through the middle of the schooling fish with their mouths open.

Near the end of the trip our guide told us that no matter what we paid it was not enough. To see a whale breaching for 30 minutes is a pretty rare sight, to see whales bubble netting is extremely rare. To see both in the same trip is a once in a lifetime experience. It was something I will never forget!

Finally Here!!

Vacation time.
I am trying out a few new things. I have been a linux user for 6 years or so. I have been doing picture slide-shows using dvd-slideshow. This is a linux command line product and works pretty well. It is reasonable fast if you have a computer with a little bit of horsepower. I created this video this morning and was just curious if I could upload and view on blogger. Dvd-slidshow creates .vob files which should play in any dvd player. I have never tested it in one as I don't have one, but the docs say it works.

Right now the video slide-show seems to be uploading although it is taking a while. Could be because I am doing it from my laptop over a wireless connection. Hopefully it will work and will be viewable here.

Coming Back

I

I made a trip to Alaska in the spring of 2009. It was beautiful. On that trip there was a record heat wave. The temperature was above 85 degrees for 6 days in a row. It broke a record that was over 100 years old. The problem was I came prepared for typical spring weather, that being temperatures in the 50's at night and maybe 70 during the day. I was pretty warm that entire trip. Well I am going back at the end of July. I don't know what to expect this time around. I think I will have to go prepared for warm and/ or the cool. I am ready. Alaska is one of the last unspoiled places on this earth to visit.
