Noise Pollution

2020-06-03T11:03:00.002-07:00

A noise that can implement harmful effects on the activity and health of humans and animal’s

life living in an area is called noise pollution.

Causes of noise pollution:

Big machines used in industries produce a large amount of noise.
Various equipment like compressors and generators also produces a large amount of noise. These are used in industries mostly.
Poor Urban Planning is also responsible for noise pollution in society.
Congested houses, massive households sharing small area, combat over parking, common fights over simple amenities result in noise pollution.
In social events (i.e. marriages, parties, etc.) noise is at its peak. People play songs on high volume.
Transportation (i.e. vehicles, trains, airplanes, etc.) also causes noise pollution.
Construction work also causes noise pollution.
Appliances like TV, mobile, mixer grinder, pressure cooker, vacuum cleaners, washing machine, and coolers have a minor contribution towards the noise pollution.

Harmful effect of noise pollution:

Hearing problems can occur in beings due to noise pollution.
It causes health issues in humans.
Loud noise can impede your sleep and might lead to irritation and uncomfortable situations.
It can hypertension and high-stress levels in humans.
It can cause damage to different human organs (liver, brain, and heart).
Noise can become hazardous to patients who needs rest.
It increases blood pressure, heartbeat, and headache.

Precautionary measures for noise pollution:

The noise-causing appliances in homes and offices should be switched off while not in use. This will save electricity as well as will prevent noise pollution.
The doors of cabinets or rooms should be remained closed when there is some machinery or equipment which can produce noise.
Using earmuffs can bring loud noise to a bearable level.
The volume of TV, radios, or songs playing in any player or mobiles should be kept low while using speakers or headphones.
Areas that produce a large amount of noise such as highways, industries, mills, construction sites, factories should be kept away at a reasonable distance from residential areas. Moreover, people should avoid unnecessary visits to noisy places.
Noise level should be limited in society. Laws about noise level should be made.
Loud music in cars and outdoor parties should be banned.
We should plant more trees and plants in society because they act as noise absorbents. People should be encouraged for plantation. According to studies, plants can reduce noise from 5 to 10 decibels around them.
Create healthy noise around yourself such as good and decent music, chirping of birds or violin tune, etc.
People should do proper maintenance and proper lubrication of their vehicles and machines. They should change their oil regularly and have their vehicles repaired and checked on time so that they can work properly and produce less noise.
The government should check if someone is disobeying noise rules.
Old automobiles should be replaced with modern automobiles which are more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Create awareness and education among people on the consequences of noise pollution.
Hospitals, schools, and residential areas should be declared as “No Horn Zones”.
Creating awareness and education on the consequences of noise pollution.

Soil Pollution

2020-06-01T21:31:00.002-07:00

The contamination of soil due to the presence of toxic chemicals in soil, in high concentrations that can cause risk to human health and the ecosystem is called soil pollution.

Causes:

Inappropriate disposal techniques used by industries.
Toxics chemicalsused in agriculture.
Inappropriate disposal of water.
Mining activities (crushing and processing of raw materials).
Transportation vehicles which release toxic chemicals.
Leaks in sewer lines.

Harmful effects:

Crops and plants fully are grown on contaminated soil absorbs a lot of the pollution and pass these on to us.
Long term exposure to such soil will influence the genetic make-up of the body, inflicting no heritable diseases and chronic health issuesthat can't be cured simply.
When the soil becomes polluted it becomes difficult for plants to grow in that soil.
The fertility of the soil is decreased.
Toxic gases are emitted due to which serious effect can be inflicted on human health.
The death of the many soil organisms (e.g. earthworms)within the soil will cause changes in soil structure.

Precautionary measures:

Buy perishable product.
Liquid chemicals and waste should be stored in leak-proof containers.
Avoid using pesticides.
Avoid dumping motor oil on the ground.
Buy utensils with little packaging.
Avoid using garbage bags; throw your trash directly into the garbage can.
Use plastic bags more than one time, this will be environmentally friendly.
Underground storage tanks (oil, septic, and sewer lines) should be properly maintained.
Don’t burn plastic or tires.
Plant more trees in society.
Water your lawn as infrequently as possible.
Adopt the 3R’s policy (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).
The causes of acid rain should be controlled.
Use reusable containers (i.e. glass) instead of throwing away plastic or paper regularly.
Reduction in weed content can reduce soil pollution.

Air Pollution

2020-05-31T22:06:00.010-07:00

The contamination of air due to toxic chemicals and compounds released in the air due to human activities is called air pollution.

Causes:

• One of the main causes of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels.

• Smoke from cars, jeeps, trucks, and other transportations.

• Smoke from factories and industries.

• During mining dust and chemicals are released in the air.

• In agriculture, the use of pesticides, and insecticides emit harmful chemicals and pollutants in the air.

• Another cause of air pollution is volcanic eruption which releases Sulphur dioxide in the air which is a major air pollutant.

• One of the major sources of metal pollution is lead, like in metal smelting. The usage of lead in the manufacture of certain aviation fuels also contribute to pollution.

Harmful effects:

• It can cause several respiratory and heart problems in people. It can also cause cancer. Several deaths had occurred due to air pollution in previous years. Children who live in air-polluted areas suffer from pneumonia and asthma.

• It can cause global warming.

• It causes acid rain which can cause huge damage to humans, animals, and crops.

• It causes Eutrophication (a condition in which higher content of nitrogen in the air gets developed on the surface of the sea and turns into algae and affects the species living in water adversely).

• Toxic chemicals in the air can cause animals to change their habitat.

• Ozone layer (it protects humans and animals from harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from outer space) is depleting due to the presence of air pollutants like Chlorofluorocarbons.

Precautionary measures:

• People should be encouraged to use public transport in place of personal transport to reduce transport on the road. In this way, the number of vehicles would be less, and less smoke will be produced.

• People should save electricity because too many fossils fuels are burnt to produce electricity which causes air pollution.

• Adopt 3R’s policy (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).

• Solar, wind, and geothermal energy should be used because they are less likely to produce air pollution.

• People should use energy-efficient devices. They consume less energy than ordinary devices.

• Don’t burn plastic or tires.

• Forests should be protected.

• Automotive engines should be designed in such a way that the smoke emission from them causes minimum pollution.

• Old automobile engines should be replaced with new ones.

• Railway steam engines shouldn’t be used.

• Industrial areas should be located away from residential areas.

• The Government should divert their attention to control air pollution.

• Awareness should be created among people against air pollution.

• People should avoid smoking because it causes air pollution and it is also damaging to the health of the person smoking and the people around him.

• Fires in forests should be checked. Necessary prevention measures should be taken to protect the forests.

• Tall chimneys should be used in factories.

• Plant as many trees as possible along roadsides and houses.

Water Pollution

2020-05-19T11:52:00.002-07:00

The contamination of lakes, oceans, aquifers, groundwater (water bodies) due to inappropriate activities of humans is called water pollution.

Causes:

Disposal of untreated wastewater into natural reservoirs of water.
Junking of solid waste and garbage in water bodies.
Discharge of industrial waste into water.
Ocean and seawater get polluted due to spilled oil from tankers and ships.
Acid rain is also a source of water pollution.

Harmful effects:

It causes the death of organisms living in water bodies.
The food chain is disrupted due to the death of small fishes because big fishes and humans depend on them for their food requirements.
Poisoned seafood can cause different diseases in humans like hepatitis and cholera.
Ecosystems can be destroyed by water pollution.
The availability of safe drinking water is reduced.

Precautionary measures:

Don’t allow fats and oil during cooking and washing plates to go down the sink.
Don’t flush medicines or drugs down the toilet.
Don’t use toilets as wastebaskets.
Use less amount of detergent and bleaches while washing clothes or dishes.
Lower the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Don’t dispose of these into sanitary systems.
Don’t dispose of motor oil and other fluids of automotive in the sanitary system
Re-use plastic bags as much as possible. In this way, there will be less plastic that will end up in water bodies.
Follow the laws made to control water wastage and pollution.
Drains should be cleaned regularly.
Dead bodies should not be thrown in rivers.
Petroleum shouldn’t be mixed in water.
Some algae and plants are helpful to keep the water clean. They should be grown in water bodies.
There should be proper sewage facilities.
Awareness should be created in people about wastage of water.
Pollutants should be converted into non-toxic substances.
Toxic substances should be removed from the water before its disposal into water bodies.
Laws should be made and forced on industries to treat water before its disposal.
People should clean canals, lakes, and rivers near them. Community clean-up projects should be encouraged.

Pollution
