However, when planning your copy, you will want to make sure that you constantly urge the reader to act immediately by inserting a number of “calls to action,” as I've mentioned previously.

You may want to consider using fly-ins or pop-ups to create more urgency – or to make a time-bound offer. Perhaps you can use a countdown to build urgency (i.e., when someone arrives at your landing page, they have five minutes to purchase the product at the lowest price).

Now, if you're creating a squeeze page, you might want to employ slightly different tactics. For a completely free-to-join squeeze page, you more than likely wont have a considerable amount of resistance to joining, unless the visitor a) doesn't see any benefits; and b) suspects that you will sell their email address to spammers.

Both of these problems are relatively easy to overcome. In your headline, simply state the exact benefits they will receive for joining – as always, mixing in psychological triggers. In your first paragraph of copy, give them a compelling reason to join now (i.e., the price might go up, the list might become private, you'll get this amazing report).

Now, to overcome the second problems, simply include a short line under your opt-in form that explains that you will not – under any circumstances – spam them or sell or give away their email address and name.

One major problem is copy. And that's fine. Not everyone is going to be an excellent writer – never mind a copywriter. But as someone selling a product or trying to build a list, it is important that you know your strengths and weaknesses – and that you either spend the time to overcome them or hire someone else to do it for you.

With copy writing, for instance, it is important to use a mix of compelling sales points with powerful psychological triggers. Most people who create a sales page miss either one or both of those elements.

For instance, they might concentrate so much on building hype that they don't actually explain what solution they are providing – and for whom they are providing it. If I don't have a specific problem that your product solves, why would I buy it? I wouldn't.

Now, if they fail to sprinkle in psychological triggers, such as “scientifically proven,” “guaranteed,” and “shocking,” no one will feel compelled to continue reading, as the benefits will have a low or average perceived value.

In addition to these two problems, some sales pages lack coherency and direction. The copy looks amateurish and it doesn't slowly grind forward, breaking down the visitor's resistance to the sale – and compelling him or her to buy more and more at each sales point.

Additionally, if there aren't multiple calls to action – another form of psychological trigger – then a potential visitor might never feel compelled enough to pull out his or her credit card on the spot and make the purchase.

It's So Lonely On Twitter

It feels lonely when you post a tweet or update your status and no one responds. Can you imagine standing in the world just hollering and no one listens to you? That's what it feels like to some lonely tweeters and facebookers. I'm not one of them, but just suppose I was...this is what my day would look like.

Get up in the morning at 7AM checking my Tweetdeck for direct messages and replies. There are none. But, how could that be?

I mean, I posted some pretty interesting stuff all day yesterday. I poured my heart out into it. Where are you people? You must be tone deaf and Twitter deaf! Maybe I just need some new followers.

Is there a program out there that will get me more followers who will pay me some attention? I'm willing to pay for friends and followers. No matter what the cost!

Forget Twitter, let me go over to Facebook. I know they love me over there!

Checking Facebook, ok, ok, no responses to my status updates? What, there is even one of my friends who sent out an angry update in all caps talking about how he doesn't want to receive unsolicited party invites, and marketing messages to his inbox. The nerve! Everybody should like to party. And why are you on Facebook if you don't want to receive marketing messages?

I am so lonely. I wish someone would listen to me.

I know that may be hard for some of you, because as a rule, we know that the internet is full of nerds and geeks. But, it is also home to a lot of non-geeky, non-nerdy types who know how to hold a conversation in real life...you know, day to day stuff.

There are rules of engagement when you use social networks, and if you find yourself feeling alone on Twitter or on Facebook, then you've probably been ostracized, silently. Similar to how you are in real life.

Here's a tip: change your ways, and you'll change your life. Quit doing the stuff that hasn't gotten you a response in the past, and try something new, like try to be a real person for once. See what that gets you.

I'm Looking for Distributors...

I am not one to jump on every network marketing opportunity that comes about. I need evidence, hard evidence, like the kind Jesus left, in order to convince me that a business endeavor is righteous and worth my time.

My niece and nephew have been talking in my ear for the past three months. Trying to convince me to get involved with this new business they are into.

Now mind you, I have been ignoring them, thinking, 'what's for them is meant for them.' Besides, I'm pretty successful in my own right just writing and taking pictures everyday.

But, on Tuesday of this week, I sat down with my nephew and actually listened to him. He didn't try to sell me anything, because I wasn't coming to be sold. He knew that. He explained to me the meat and potatoes of the organization, and how much money he and my niece have made since February, when they first joined.

The dollar amount was very good. So good, that they have been able to buy a car for their family. (Their old car was just living on a wing and a prayer!) Yet, my nephew never said anything about the new car they just got. He was pretty proud of the fact that he was signing up new distributors and helping people get out of their money worries.

Helping people. That's what got me. See, I enjoy helping people, whether its that stranger at the supermarket who can't find the fresh baked bread, or the man that dropped his wallet (credit cards and all) in the parking lot. I'm that person.

Adyss International is making folks rich yall....most of all people of color. All over the country new distributors are chalking up $10,000 - $300,000 a month paychecks! All from just being a distributor and helping other people reach their goals.

See, I believe we have to help each other. The ways we had been accustomed to being employed in the past is gone. I just read that on June 1st GM is filing bankruptcy; Chrysler filed earlier this month. The days of working for a company for 30 years and then retiring with that gold watch is over. We've got to make it happen for ourselves. Our children and families are depending on us, we can't let them down.

Take a look at this YouTube video I found today, it's an ABC News story talking about how Ardyss is making people wealthy. I was one of the people who said, "I ain't selling no girdle!"

But, my nephew and niece are making a believer out of me.

How To Use Twitter As A Great Writing Exercise While Learning

One of the latest social networking phenomenons is Twitter. It seems to be on the mind of every celebrity, politician, student, business owner, and social maven.

If you aren't aware of what Twitter is, here is a brief description. Twitter lets you post (the catch is 140 characters total or less) what you are doing, thoughts on a subject, a plug for a product, or a hello to your friends. You follow Twitter users and they can follow you as well.

Here is where I have found a new use of the site. One of the exercises I am currently teaching is how to say what you need to in articulate sentences while still staying in the 140 character restriction.

Yes, there are ways to circumvent the limitations such as using u for you or 4 and not 4 but when you can get a full impact to the reader without having to abbreviate your thoughts, you have learned a valuable tool.

When you speak or write the key is to keep the attention of those that you are communicating with. We often find ourselves endlessly explaining something that could be stated in more concise patterns.

The exercise is can be advantageous for the sports commentator that has to get his point across between each pitch of a baseball game or in between downs of a National Football League broadcast. It can help somebody on a job interview think faster and better their choice of words. Maybe you are a business owner and need to get the attention of a future client in a couple of sentences, or you are writing a headline for a blog post.

Whatever the reason why not try this. Think of a message you want to get across to friends, family, co-workers, and so on. Start to write the contents in Microsoft Word. When you have finished check the character count and if it is over 140 try to condense it without using abbreviations and losing the meaning of your thoughts. The next thing you can do is to take something that you have already posted or written that is over 140 characters and see if you can truncate this as well. It is not always feasible to be effective with a word or character limitation but for practice it can only benefit your speaking and writing capabilities today, tomorrow, and further down the road. What have you got to loose but a few words. Good luck!

What Do Subscribers Expect from You?

Consistency is something that we all lean on, from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. When my alarm clock goes off, I hit the snooze button and it consistently reminds me to get up exactly 10 minutes later. I turn the left-hand knob on my shower, and hot water comes out of the faucet.

If my alarm doesn’t go off again after I hit the snooze button or if my faucet won’t give me hot water, it throws me off. It doesn’t necessarily ruin my day, of course, but it does remind me how reliant we are on routine and how disruptions in that routine aren’t usually welcome.

And just what does this have to do with your email marketing campaigns?

You’ve done a great job getting subscribers to your site, generating signups to your list and putting great content in your newsletters, but maybe your open rates aren’t where you’d like, or you’re seeing an increase in your unsubscribe rate.

You’ve looked at your messages, and you’re still providing the great content in the messages that you always have. So why isn’t the response where it should be?

Maybe you’re not making yourself part of your subscribers’ routine.

There are several things you can do to build consistency into your newsletters, and in doing so, build your subscribers’ expectations and get them into the habit of anticipating, opening and reading your newsletter:

Format Your From Line and Subject Lines Consistently

Once subscribers have gotten your initial message and the first issue or two of your newsletter, they form an expectation of what your messages look like in their inbox. Future messages that follow this format are more likely to stand out when they scan the dozens or hundreds of messages in their inbox.

The best way to build in consistency is by sending each message with the same from line. This, along with the subject line, is the first thing subscribers see.

You can build consistency into the subject line itself, too, but don’t make it boring… after all, you want people to get excited about what’s in the email!

Many email marketers develop a “voice” that shines through in their subject lines and makes them different and compelling, yet unmistakably “theirs.” Others use tags such as [Justin's Totally Sweet Newsletter] and place those at the end of their subject lines.

Brand Your Messages, At The Top

Whether you use a logo, your company name, your website URL, or your own name as your brand, get it in front of your subscribers, at the beginning of your message!

You’ll notice that I put a URL in the headline. As Marc noted in an earlier post, you can put online versions of your newsletter issues on your site, and give links to those online versions in your messages.

This is a great idea because it can drive subscribers back to your site, where they may sign up for another one of your newsletters, purchase one of your products, or click on an AdSense ad on your site - and there’s certainly nothing bad about them doing any of that!

Format Your Message Body Consistently

Now that you’ve gotten your subscribers to open your messages through consistent subjects and message beginnings, you’ll want to provide readers with a consistent format.

Readers scan email for the information they deem relevant. When your subscribers are familiar with the format of your messages, they’re better able to scan your mailings and find the information they want.

If they’re not able to find the information they want easily, they’re less likely to read future issues and more likely to unsubscribe.

Stick To Your Schedule

Build expectations for when your messages will arrive. If you’re offering subscribers a weekly newsletter, send it weekly.

By doing this you will be building anticipation that will foster relationships and lifetime readers.

Consistency with your newsletter can make you as much a part of your subscribers’ routine as my snooze button is a part of mine.

Do Your Potential Customers Forget About You?

Your web business probably gets product inquiries from potential customers around the globe. Inquiries come via e-mail and your web site, and you try to send information to each hot prospect as quickly as you can. You know that you can drastically increase the likelihood of making a sale by satisfying each person’s need for information quickly!

But, after you’ve delivered that first bit of information to your prospect, do you send him any further information?

If you are like most Internet marketers, you don’t.

When you don’t follow that initial message with additional information later on, you let a valuable prospect slip from your grasp! This is a potential customer who may have been very interested in your products, but who lost your contact information, or was too busy to make a purchase when your first message reached him.

Often, a prospect will purposely put off making a purchase, to see if you find him important enough to follow up with later. When he doesn’t receive a follow up message from you, he will take his business elsewhere.

Are you losing profits due to inconsistent and ineffective follow up?

Following up with leads is more than just a process - it’s an art. In order to be effective, you need to design a follow up system, and stick to it, EVERY DAY! If you don’t follow up with your prospects consistently, INDIVIDUALLY, and in a timely fashion, then you might as well forget the whole follow up process.

Consistent follow up gets results!

When I first started marketing and following up with prospects, I used a follow up method that I now call the “List Technique.” I had a large database containing the names and e-mail addresses of people who had specifically requested information about my products and services. These prospects had already received my first letter by the time they requested more information, so I used the company’s latest news as a follow up piece.

I would write follow up newsletters every now and then, and send them, in one mass mailing, to everyone who had previously requested information from me. While this probably did help me win a few additional orders, it wasn’t a very good follow up method. Why isn’t the “List Technique” very effective?

The List Technique isn’t consistent. Proponents of the List Technique tend to only send out follow up messages when their companies have “big news”.
List Technique messages don’t give the potential customer any additional information about the product or service in question. He can’t make a more informed buying decision after receiving a newsletter! If someone is wondering whether your company sells the best knick-knacks, what does he care that you’ve just moved your headquarters?
List Technique messages convey a “big list” mentality to your potential customers. When I used to write follow up messages using the List Technique, I was writing news bulletins to everyone I knew! I should have been sending a personal message to each individual who wanted to know more about my products.

What follow up method really works?

Following up with each lead individually, multiple times, but at set intervals, and with pre-written messages, will dramatically increase sales! Others who use this same technique confirm that they have all at least doubled the sales of various products! In order to set this system up, though, you need to do some planning.

First, you’ll need to develop your follow up messages. If you’ve been marketing on the Internet for any length of time, then you should already have a first informative letter. Your second letter marks the beginning of the follow up process, and should go into more detail than the first letter. Fill this letter with details that you didn’t have the space to add to the first letter. Stress the BENEFITS of your products or services!

Your next 2-3 follow up messages should be rather short. Include lists of the benefits and potential uses of your products and services. Write each letter so that your prospects can skim the contents, and still see the full force of your message.

The next couple of follow up messages should create a sense of urgency in your prospect’s mind. Make a special offer, giving him a reason to order NOW instead of waiting any longer. After reading these follow up messages, your prospect should want to order immediately!

Phrase each of your final 1 or 2 follow up messages in the form of a question. Ask your prospect why he hasn’t yet placed an order? Try to get him to actually respond. Ask if the price is to high, the product isn’t the right color or doesn’t have the right features, or if he is looking for something else entirely. (By this time, it’s unlikely that this person will order from you. However, his feedback can help you modify your follow up letters or products, so that other prospects will order from you.)

The timing of your follow up letters is just as important as their content. You don’t want one prospect to receive a follow up the day after he gets your initial informative letter, while another prospect waits weeks for a follow up!

Always send an initial, informative letter as soon as it is requested, and send the first follow up 24 hours afterwards. You want your hot prospects to have information quickly, so that they can make informed buying decisions!

Send the next 2-3 follow up messages between 1 and 3 days apart. Your prospect is still hot, and is probably still shopping around! Tell him about the benefits of your products and services, as opposed to your competitors’. You will make the sale!

Send the final follow up messages later on. You certainly don’t want to annoy your prospect! Make sure that these last letters are at least 4 days apart.

Following up effectively seems complicated, but it doesn’t have to be! So many potential customers are lost because of poor follow up - don’t you want to be one of the few to get it right?

Think of Twitter as a pool part at Jamie Foxx' crib and there are lots of cool folks there. And guess what? You're one of the cool people! So in 140 characters or less (text message size), you get to tell your global connections whats on your mind.

Many times I tweet about breaking news, offbeat weird news, and of course the articles that I Digg. Twitter can be an extension of your marketing and promotion campaign. People like the messages I tweet, and they often Retweet (RT) them as well. Retweet (RT) is the act of your followers resending your tweets to even more followers. Viral marketing at its best.

Warning: Twitter is very addictive!

I installed TweetDeck on my PC and I use the TwitterBerry App on my Blackberry. Both these tools keep me tweeting quickly and efficiently.

TweetDeck is a software I added that easily lets me see which of my followers are most active, along with what are the popular trending topics of the moment. TweetDeck is a powerful tool duplication tool that helps you get more followers and leads.

Remember, social networking is a two way street. Recognize your followers weekly by using #followfriday, or any other method of saying thank you. This creates a conversational tone that will earn you a reputation as being responsive and credible.
