I am intrigued by the finish, but really can't tell if I like it or not. Am I a watch snob; would I be applauding an Italian or German watch company if they produced a model finished like this? This large sized watch is stainless steel with a handcrafted niobium dial. Niobium is an elemental metal(atomic number 41) and has interesting colouring properties. To achieve the colour on these dials I run an electric current through the metal and depending on what voltage I use, the metal turns different colours. This process is called anodizing. Since many colours are available, I give you the choice of which colour you’d like. Please visit the niobium section to see all available colours.

This large sized watch is stainless steel with a handcrafted oxidized copper or brass dial. The black minute marker ring, red hour markers, seconds ring, and logo are a luminous pigment (Swiss Super-Luminova) which glows in the dark. The white areas of the hands luminesce green in a dark environment. This watch’s strap also comes as pictured with black leather and red stitching.

John Arnold was an exceptional watchmaker, who excelled in the development and production of marine chronometers. With his son, he built up a company that established itself as one of the most reputable suppliers of timepieces to the Royal Navy as well as intrepid explorers like James Cook, Matthew Flinders and George Vancouver, to name but a few. By the early 19th century, he had several major patents to his name and created a minor storm in precision timekeeping with the Arnold No. 36, the first-ever watch to be called a ‘chronometer’ – a term used to this day for a supremely accurate timepiece. The Arnold No. 36 was considered so important that it was included in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in London, where it can still be seen today.

The TB88 is proof that the company has lost none of its appetite for innovative technology or precision timekeeping. The A&S5003 calibre brings together all the technical and aesthetic characteristics of a classical John Arnold chronometer. The letters ‘TB’ stand for ‘true beat’ (or ‘dead beat’), a complication that alludes to the precision timekeeping required for navigation at sea. Unlike conventional mechanical watches, a true beat movement measures out time in complete seconds rather than fractions dependent on the balance frequency. This is useful for determining the exact time and, consequently, longitude, and makes it invaluable at sea.

The TB88 is also a tribute to John Arnold’s earliest known pocket watch, of which the original case bears the number ‘88’. The number is replicated by the design of the movement, with its perfectly symmetrical layout featuring the twin barrels at the top, the balance wheel between 4 and 5 o’clock and the true beat seconds indicator between 7 and 8.

But the feature that unquestionably sets Arnold & Son’s new TB88 apart is its unique ‘English’ movement design, as expressed through features like the straight-cut bridges. Each of the pivoting elements in the movement is mounted on its own bridge, 16 in total! Compared to usual movements, the TB88’s movement is partly ‘inverted’, which means that the technically and aesthetically interesting features are on the dial side of the movement instead of being hidden away on the reverse. The front showcases the two barrels, which generate a minimum of 100 hours power reserve when fully wound, the gear train and the balance wheel with its Breguet overcoil spring. Bending and fitting such a spring by hand is a delicate and highly skilled operation mastered by a precious few watchmakers. The complex true beat seconds system as well as the winding and setting mechanisms are located on the reverse of the movement.

Further shining examples of watchmaking at its finest is the A&S5003 movement’s entire haute horlogerie finishing, with the hand-chamfered and polished edges of the bridges and of all the steel parts. The three-dimensional effect of the movement is further enhanced by the fascinating juxtaposition of grey and brushed bridges on a black main plate (new TB88 stainless steel case) or palladium and brushed bridges on a NAC grey main plate (new TB88 18-carat rose gold case). These new galvanic platings further highlight the mechanical complexity of these magnificent timepieces.

The case of the TB88 is characterized by its unique English style: discreet opulence offset by the elegance of a double-step bezel and lugs, gently flowing contours and soft curves. The TB88 is housed in either a 18-carat rose gold case or stainless steel case measuring 46 millimeters in diameter, which is water-resistant to 30 meters and secured to the wearer’s wrist by a hand-stitched black alligator leather strap.

Dubey & Schaldenbrand celebrated the ‘Age of Elegance’ at the 21st Annual Palos Verdes Concours d”Elegance at Trump National Golf Club, which showcased some of the world’s most luxurious classic automobiles.

Alongside local retailer partner, Medawar Fine Jewelers, Dubey & Schaldenbrand welcomed more the 4000 guests to the event. Set on the rolling greens of the golf club in a luxury tent, the timepiece display included the new collection from the brand, and special one-of-a-kind pieces brought over from Switzerland uniquely for the event.

Dubey & Schaldenbrand donated a beautiful vintage Edition Georges Dubey timepiece valued at over $10,000 to raise money for the Palos Verdes Art Center and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Foundation charities. The lucky winner, Sven Senger, was absolutely delighted to win the timepiece, which was presented to him by Jonatan Gil of Duby & Schaldenbrand , along with Robert Medawar Fine Jewelers.

Full disclosure.... I didn't write a WORD of this article about Ring Clock! I mean, I'm writhing this part... now... right here. But thats it! This award winning time piece was designed by Gusztav Szikszai two years ago and when the initial pictures were posted online there was a lot of interest with many people in various forums asking how they could get hold of one.

Since then we have been fine tuning the design and technology so that we could deliver the best quality product and building the right team to bring this to market. We are pleased to say that within the timescales below we believe that we can now answer the calls and produce this with your support.

Ring Clock can improve your sense of time too. How about trying to predict the time before you rotate the ring? It sounds silly but we bet that you will play along with us at some point!
It is also very green with no wasted energy because in real time, when you want, it shows the time. “It started with a challenge 2 years ago at CGSociety.org named Moving Innovation. The idea was to create visualisation for a product that cannot exist today, but could exist 10 years from now. I wanted to create something that is innovative, good to look at and can actually be useful. I never wore a watch on my wrist because I don't like the feeling, but I like watches in general, so I used that opportunity to let my mind come up with something that I could wear, the Ring Clock.”
We had to change some things on the original design for the feasibility, because technology has not been able to catch up with Guszti’s dreams in the past 2 years!

Project timeline and budget

Our status as at Aug 2013:
In the last 4 months we have finished the conceptual model and made some small design changes for feasibility. We have contacted with the potential suppliers: ring turner, micro laser cutter, flexible circuit board manufacturer, battery manufacturer, resin and antibacterial nanotechnology specialist.
We have prepared schematic diagrams and layouts for the prototype board (in 1:1 scale). Printed Circuit Board manufacturing and component purchasing are ongoing. We have produced 36 ring bodies from 316L stainless steel for prototypes, the micro laser cutting with 30 micron cutting edge is ongoing (see the pictures below).

Project plan:

Aug-Oct 2013: prototype building (electrical and mechanical)

Jan-March 2014: first batch goes into production
Apr 2014: first batch ready for delivery
Apr-Jun 2014: second batch goes into production

Prototype: Our conceptual model is based on available smart technologies and standards, so we know that it will work, but our challenge is to make sure that it works in the confined space within the inside of a ring! We will build more than 20 working prototypes and test them in extreme environments in order to produce the best product from your support. Once again updates will be provided throughout this process.
Manufacturing: As you can imagine we have to use the smallest, ultra-thin technologies available. Our chosen manufacturer will be involved in the prototype phase so they will know our product in the embryonic stage.
Delivery time: We have built in some contingency time during the prototype and manufacturing stage to ensure that we can meet the deadlines outlined above. We will inform you immediately if we need more time or of course if we are ahead of schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

1, Battery Life / What happens to the ring once the battery has reached the end of its lifetime (expected to be 3 years)?

We will integrate a non-standard size ultrathin rechargeable lithium polymer battery into the Ring Clock. The electronics will be within resin for water resistance. Ring Clock is an electronic gadget with a lot of electronic parts, so the life expectancy is based on our expectations similar to other electronic devices such as a mobile phone. The procurement of components will be an important aspect of life expectancy, but we can not promise more than the parts manufacturers. We hope in the next 3 years there will be a Ring Clock 2.0 with rotational kinetic power supply and therefore a longer life expectancy. We understand your request and we will investigate the replaceable battery, but we cannot make any promises at this stage.

2, Water Resistant / Can I wash my hands wearing it or do I have to remove it prior to washing my hands?

We are currently researching what would be the best solution and have been in communication with a resin and nanotechnology specialist to find out about the current technology. As you will appreciate however we have to test this before we make big promises although we are hoping that it will be WR 100M (Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkelling, sailing and water sports -wiki) although of course we cannot promise this high level WR at this moment in time.

3, Warranty / What is the warranty period and how will it be handled for international customers?

The warranty offered for Ring Clock is 1 year. It is expected that the customer will send back the ring clock to us at their own expense, we will review it and if it is not abnormal usage then it will be replaced and it will be delivered free of charge. The warranty is not applicable to cases other than defects in material, design and workmanship.

4, Ring size and colour / When will you need my ringsize and colour?

Once the campaign has been successful we will contact you in November 2013 to ask you for your ring size and LED colour choice. We will also send you emails about important events, and we also plan to upgrade our site where you will have a private account (we will send you details on e-mail) and you can add your ring size, colour and change your address if it needs to be changed.

5, Shipping cost / I just funded this, and I forgot to add 15$ shipping, what should I do?

Contribute a further $15 with the same e-mail address so we know it is your shipping cost.

6, Ring Clock function / Are Hours, Minutes and Seconds able to rotate independently of each other or They are on the same ring?

The hours, minutes and seconds are on the same outer ring. The inner ring is the one that is in contact with your finger. The outer ring rotation activates the
LED's and you can see the time around the ring. Sometimes you see the hours and minutes close to each other (e.g. 13:30) and sometimes you will have to rotate more, because the hour and minute are far away from each other (e.g. 13:55).

The original concept and design from 2011 was that the hours, minutes and seconds would be on separate rings, they rotate individually and automatically however this has proved impossible to manufacture at this moment in time.

This watch is bad ass! Thats about all I really have to say about the Tendence Gulliver Carbon Fiber Series. Bad ASS! Its big. Light weight. and a HUGE statement piece. Each of the different colored watches helps support a different cause. The white watch supports a charity called One Day's Wages and will provide food for 16 children on the horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia). For every five red watches purchased, Keep a Child Alive can provide one month of AIDS treatment.

So naturally, I purchased two. The Hunger watch and the Water watch. I have done some mission work abroad, and have a soft spot for these types of organizations. That isn't to say that I think the others are any less critical to people in need, that is just what I decided to purchase.

The watches themselves are really cool. They have a nice clean look, soft strap, and are east to read. Overall they are a sweet watch.

Now, I did check other reviews for this watch on YouTube and there were a few comments I want to address here. The main complaint I heard was that you can buy this same watch on Amazon for $4.00 and that this is a scam and rip off. OK. Sure. these are inexpensively made watches from China. So what? How do you think they can sell them for only $40 and give money to charity organizations. If you want something similar, for cheaper than $40, go buy that! But if you would like to wear something cool on your wrist and support a cause that you WANT to support, this is a killer deal.

The team at Skywatch was kind enough to send me one of their amazing watches to check out, try on, poke around and review for you. At a glance, it looks like everything I had been hoping for in fashionable dive watch. I came across Skywatch nearly a year ago and had been going back and fourth on if I was going to purchase on or not. Don't get me wrong, the price on these are great! Starting at $295 for the three hand models and $395 for the chronographs isn't bad at all.

So below are photos that I took (thanks iPhone) and a press release that Skywatch sent to me. I hope that you find this useful, and I will have a video review for you guys by the end of the weekend.

Skywatch timepieces are from brand and marketing architect Gabriel Ibarra, who commissioned a product designer from Geneva to realize his vision for the line. Throughout his career, legendary watch designer Gérald Genta (1931-2011) created some of the most iconic models in the watch world, working with brands from Omega to Audemars Piguet and IWC and eventually establishing an independent brand (now absorbed into Bulgari, one of his other clients) making watches under his own name. It is a testament to the influence of his designs that his watches became hallmarks of their respective brands and remain popular watch styles. Below, we take a look at some of his most notable creations.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver

Genta presented his design for the Royal Oak to Audemars Piguet in 1970. As the story goes, Genta drew his design for the watch in one night, after being inspired by a diver wearing an old fashioned helmet attached to his suit by eight screws. This translated into the design of the watch, which features an octagonal shape with eight screws on the bezel. The octagonal design has remained even in the most recent incarnations of the watch, including the Royal Oak Offshore Diver pictured here, first unveiled in 2013.

Bulgari Bulgari

Bulgari Bulgari Chronograph

The inspiration for the first Bulgari Bulgari was an ancient Roman coin on which the effigy of the emperor was encircled by engraved inscriptions. Genta applied this design element to the watch’s bezel, which bears the two “Bulgari” engravings from which the model derives its repetitive name. The cylindrical shape of the case is also influenced by ancient Rome, specifically by the columns of Roman temples. Over its 36 years of existence, the Bulgari Bulgari has only undergone slight changes, including the transition from quartz to mechanical movements, and variations in size to suit modern tastes.

IWC Ingenieur

IWC Ingenieur Double Chronograph Titanium

Genta is also responsible for reinventing IWC’s Ingenieur. Launched in 1976, Genta’s Ingenieur SL featured the addition of five visible screws on the watch’s bezel (similar to the Royal Oak’s bezel screws). This element remained a part of the Ingenieur’s design, as seen on the IWC Ingenieur Double Chronograph Titanium, the latest in the series.

Omega Constellation

Genta is also known to have designed several models in the Omega Constellation line. The series of watches still continues today, with most recent version being the Omega Constellation Sedna Gold.

Patek Philippe Nautilus

Patek Philippe Ref. 5726 Nautilus Annual Calendar

The Patek Philippe Nautilus was another one of Genta’s original designs. Knowing the Stern family were enthusiastic yachtsmen, he designed the Nautilus in 1974 as a sports watch with a bezel resembling a porthole. Genta also designed the Golden Ellipse for Patek Philippe in 1968.

6 Extreme Divers’ Watches

All divers’ watches share certain characteristics that make them divers’ watches: unidirectional rotating bezels, secure screw-down crowns, higher-than-typical water resistance. Some of these divers’ watches, however, go the extra mile (or fathom), with cases that can descend to 3,000 or even 4,000 meters, chronographs operable at incredible depths, or high-tech depth gauge devices built into their mechanical movements. Below, we take a look at six of these “extreme” dive watches and what sets them apart from the pack.

Breitling Superocean Chronograph M2000

The Breitling Superocean Chronograph M2000 has a chronograph that can be operated at a depth of 2,000 meters underwater. The watch is the first to feature a patented magnetic push-piece system, in which the chronograph controls are operated via the metal of the case. Along with the screw-locked crown and the 4-mm-thick sapphire crystal, these pushers enable the wearer to use the watch at the extreme depth of 2,000 meters (or 6,600 feet) without the risk of water seeping in.

Blancpain X Fathoms

Blancpain’s X Fathoms watch combines elements of its famous Fifty Fathoms ancestor with a modern mechanical depth gauge. Though “only” water resistant to 300 meters, Blancpain calls it the most high-performance mechanical diving watch ever made with several world firsts, including:

- Measured depth up to 90 meters
- Maximum depth reached memory
- Separate indication on the 0-15m scale with an +/- 30 cm precision
- Retrograde 5-minute counter for decompression stops

The 55.65-mm case made of satin-brushed titanium is water-resistant to 300 meters. It features a helium decompression valve for saturation diving and the characteristic unidirectional rotating bezel. The strap comprises 14 articulated parts to ensure a perfect fit on the wrist.

Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQUEST

Ball Watch’s Engineer Hydrocarbon DeepQUEST has a water resistance of 3,000 meters, achieved by crafting the entire case out of a single block onto which the bezel is directly screwed. The crown seals, generally considered the weak point of a watch in terms of water resistance, have been strengthened to prevent entry of water when in the screwed-in position. The watch also has a nonreflective sapphire crystal with its thickness raised to 5.3 mm and an automatic helium-release valve.

Deep Blue Depthmaster 3000M

Deep Blue’s Depthmaster 3000M, as its name suggests, is water-resistant to 3,000 meters. The watch is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 movement. The 49-mm stainless steel case features a helium valve with a protective cap.

Hublot Oceanographic 4000

Requiring 18 months of research, development and testing to complete, the Hublot Oceanographic 4000 was the the first diver’s watch able to withstand the pressure exerted at a depth of 4,000 meters, or about 13,120 feet. (Hublot actually tested the seal all the way to 5,000 meters in a Roxer tank.) To ensure the watertightness of the watch and to resist this extreme pressure, the synthetic sapphire crystal is 6.5 mm thick. The screw-down case ack is made of grade 2 titanium. The Oceanographic 4000 has a helium valve, which allows gases that have infiltrated the watch during the descent to safely escape during the ascent.

UTS 4000M Professional Diver

The UTS 4000M Professional Diver, another timepiece water-resistant to 4,000 meters, comes in a 45-mm case crafted from a single block of stainless steel. The 6-mm thick sapphire crystal is glued into the case and is also secured by a stainless steel ring with 7 hex screws.

Tokyoflash Fragment Concept.... I Would Buy One.

Anders says: I was looking at animations of some ultra high-end watches and inspiration struck to make something with a similar feel, but less complicated and more affordable. I wanted to use a standard analog movement, but that soon proved impossible. Hopefully the visual impact of the display exceeds the increased complexity. Time telling should be easy: the outer ring of numbers tell the hour by the only digit which isn’t scrambled, and single minutes are told by the inner digits. The current 5-minute group is indicated by the lines between the numbers: the two lines that match up mark the spot.

The display is made up of stacked discs which rotate a certain amount each hour/minute to reveal the next number. The watch itself should be metal to give a solid, quality feel. In its current form it probably appeals more to men, but a feminine version should not be impossible.

Backlighting the display should be a given. I came up with some options when I was working on it; most obviously to have three numbers instead of two, to ease readability. Colour and material options are almost endless. Its unusual technical solutions should ensure it has a considerable wow-factor.
