I picked it up intention of re-creating the other one I refinished a month ago.
On that piece, I attempted to do my first edited video but failed miserably because I filmed the entire makeover in with my phone in portrait mode so none of the footage was usable. Makes me sick as I had really good footage of that makeover too. Oh well, lesson learned, I won’t make that mistake again that’s for sure! I’ll get the pictures together for the first commode makeover and post them on my blog soon; stay tuned.
I had the hankering to paint this piece in similar shades of red but I didn’t want to copy the first piece so I popped online to search for inspiration.
These random pulls ended up being my inspiration for paint colors. I ordered the knobs online because everything was already shut down around here and then I waited. Tick tock, tick tock….
When they finally arrived; I placed them on different colors around the house to see which colors would pop the pulls. I THOUGHT I had a plan so I jumped right in and started my transformation.
The inside was grubby and had bled through the existing finish so I coated the inside of the drawers and cabinet with DIY’s new Salvation Solution. It’s designed to stop bleed through and is available in both Clear and White.
I’m sure I’ll be busting into the Clear Salvation Solutions often but for this particular piece, the White Salvation Solution served double duty as I was able to not only block the bleed through, but was also able to freshen it up because of the white.
With my phone in the correct position, I sat everything up to film my makeover.
The colors I decided to go with for this piece are DIY’s: Marquee, Queen Bee, Kissing Booth and Fire Starter, all of which can be purchased at Shizzle Design in West Michigan or on my Online Shizzle Shop here.
I love how the door turned out. Watch my video to see how I applied the paint.
So I got a wee bit carried away playing with the colors but I had a great time doing it.
There’s just something about slathering on whimsical colors that brings me to my happy place.
I let the paint dry completely then sealed it with clear wax so I could see how the knobs looked with it.
It was way too busy and I needed to take it down a notch, or two, or three because there was just way too much going on with this piece.
I was so bummed. I had a story to go along with why I chose those particular pulls but the truth is; I couldn’t stand the pulls with this antique piece. I also didn’t like the “in your face” vibrant color so the entire makeover was a hard “no”. I needed to take it in a different direction.
I stepped into the back yard and for a moment, considered sending it where other pruned branches, scrubs and failed makeovers go to die…
I realized I loved the pulls, just not with that piece. I needed to find more pulls and fast because my deadline was fast approaching and no stores in the state were open due to the lock down.
I also liked the commode but I liked the colors in it when it was in the raw paint stage. Wax always deepens the colors. I needed to tone it down but how?
I contemplated applying white wax, but i didn’t want it that much lighter. I thought about sanding it down and washing over everything with Cake Batter but that would make it too yellow. Hmm. I ended up asking for ideas on our DIY Retailer group page and one of the other retailers suggested using Faded Burlap.
I sanded the living daylights out of the piece to get all the wax off and create a heavy distress. You can also remove DIY Wax using DeNatured Alcohol found in the paint department at any hardware store. It smells like rubbing alcohol but is stronger but now nearly as nasty as Mineral Spirits. I didn’t use either; I simply sanded everything off using my mouse sander.
If you’d like to re-create this finish, pop into one of my West Michigan locations or visit my Online Shizzle Shop here for all the paint supplies and tools used in this makeover.

]]>Want to learn how easy it is to create this look? Continue reading and see how I did it.
I scored this dresser recently at a local thrift shop and knew exactly what I was going to do with it.
I’ve been wanting to do a put an IOD Furniture Transfer on one of my dressers and this was just the right size for the job.
I wanted a layered base of blue and greens so I brushed on Mermaid Tail and Mint Chip, blending them together with each stroke.
See the variations and movement in color? This is exactly what I wanted for my base.
To give it a little more depth and dimension, I filled two of my small misting bottles with water and just a tsp of Queen Bee and Bohemian Blue. It’s very important to make this solution very week or the clay in the paint can clog the bottles.
I mist Bohemian Blue and Queen Bee in random areas and loved the affect. So incredibly fast and easy and oh so gratifying.
Can you see the blue speckles in this close up? That’s how the color mist will dry if you don’t brush it out.
I applied some of each color, blended and brushed that out, then once that was dry, I misted a few random spots and let dry so you could see some speckles.
Next I did a dry fit, leaving the protective back on the design. I cut it into pieces and moved miscellaneous pieces around until I liked the layout.
Once the paint had completely dried, I applied one coat of DIY’s Big Top Topcoat to seal the dresser and prepare the surface to accept the IOD Transfer. IOD transfers adhere much better if there you apply a coat of topcoat prior to adhering the transfer. Make sure your top coat is completely dry before applying the transfer.
The following day, I removed the backing and started applying the transfer. I stepped back to look everything over one last time before starting.
This part is so much fun. The transfer goes on so quickly and easily. They’re top quality and the grid lines are awesome for lining everything up.
I forgot to take pictures, but I did lightly distress the transfer so it would look more aged before I waxed the dresser.
After the transfer was applied, I finished the entire piece off with Clear, Dark and White Waxes, high lighting and low lighting.
It’s now for sale at The Honeysuckle Company on the north end of Grand Rapids by the meijer on Plainfield.
Mermaid Tail, Mint Chip, Bohemian Blue, Queen Bee, Big Top Top Coat, Clear Wax, Dark Wax and White Wax. Our stores are locked down during the pandemic but all the paint supplies in this makeover can be ordered from my Online Shizzle Shop at www.shizzle-design.com. Need IOD Transfers, Molds or Stamps? Those are also available at The Honeysuckle Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Hope you’re all doing well and are healthy and safe during these times of uncertainty. Take care, thanks for stopping by and Happy Easter!!

]]>I love painting antique highboys! I was pretty geeked to fink this beautiful piece from BF Huntley Furniture. I paid more than I like to but it was in pristine condition except for the orange cast the stain had taken on over the years. From the research I did; I think this piece was built between 1928 – 1935.
There were miscellaneous scratches in the finish but everything else on this piece is pristine. Just look at these drawer deviders!
I gave it two thin coats of Farm Fresh by Debi’s Design Diary DIY Chalk & Clay Paint which was beautiful in an of itself but I was preparing for a Color Blending Paint Class and needed some pieces to use for demonstration. I decided to take it to the class and give it a one of a kind blended paint finish.
I actually love Farm Fresh in and of itself. It looks great sealed with just about anything. My initial thought was to call it good and simply seal it with clear wax. Had I done that, it would have looked like something like this. Actually, it would have been a bit lighter than the sample piece below because the wax is wet in the photo which makes it look darker then it looks once it’s dry.
Here’s a little behind the scenes at the Andrade house. I’m not a good housekeeper. There are always far too many projects going on simultaneously. I wish I could be organized enough to complete projects in a timely manner and put everything away but at the end of the day, life is short no matter if your house is picture perfect or not.
Farm Fresh looks amazing sealed with Clear Wax, Big Top, Clear & Black Wax, White Wax… but I had a class coming up so I decided to use this piece to demonstrate a super easy way to blend different paint colors.
I packed it up and hauled it to Not So Shabby, 2975 West Shore Drive, Holland, MI 49424 for my blending class. Here’s a shot of everything set up the night before class.
I prefer to use my continuous mist spray bottles over a typical spray bottle because water coming out of a regular spray bottle tends to run down the piece faster than you can blend it. I carry these in small and extra large. I fill my extra large bottle with water and use it every day on every piece of furniture I paint. Together with my blending brush, they help create super smooth paint finishes.
If you look closely at the above picture, you’ll see the small and large misting bottles I carry here at Shizzle. I’ve tried a bunch and they’re my absolute favorite for dependability and a long lasting continuous mist.
I wasn’t able to film or shoot the process but basically, I created two color washes mixing a little Bohemian Blue with water and then separately mixing a little Queen Bee with water. I don’t measure but I mix around 6 oz of water to a tablespoon of paint. You can spritz this through misters as long as it’s diluted quite a bit. If it’s mixed too thick, the clay in the paint can clog it. Don’t have a mister? No worries, you can simply mix up your color washes in leftover plastic containers then simply dip your brush into the wash and blend away. I apply the different colors in different areas then blend them into each other.
I sealed this piece with a combination of Clear and White Waxes. I like to literally mix my Clear and White Wax 50/50 so it’s a bit more translucent.
This gorgeous BF Huntley Highboy is now available for sale at my Shizzle Design booth within Not So Shabby, 2975 West Shore Drive, Holland, MI 49424.
I’m shipping paint supplies around the clock during this pandemic.

I am not allowed to discount any DIY or APC paint supplies that ship but I do offer quick, fantastic customer service whether you’re a local customer or across the nation or ocean. Is this gorgeous or what?! Richly pigmented with the most beautiful copper ever. If you love DIY’s Golden Ticket, you’ll LOVE Copper Patina! They’re going fast; get yours today!
This is such a gorgeous patina and can be used in so many different ways! I can’t wait to share ideas with you. Stay tuned for more details and live tutorials on my ShizzleLLC Facebook Business Page.
Perfectly paired with DIY’s Copper Patina is Shipwrecked, DIY’s new Turquoise Finishing Wax. Together these two products will create amazing goodness!
Just look at that blue yumminess along the edges of my old Welcome bucket. Pure goodness! And to think I almost donated it last week! I have SO many ideas for this turquoise wax! Stay tuned for plenty more makeovers using the new Shipwrecked Verdigris Wax and Copper Patina!!
Ever try to paint a piece of mahogany furniture or started painting a piece only to experience horrible bleed through from wood tannins halfway into your project? Salvation Solution is a true redemption for rebel furniture. Applying this prior to painting creates an incredible barrier to block those nasty stains and tannins.
Salvation Solution comes in both clear or white. Clear is best if you’re planning to wet distress your painted piece so the original wood peeks through. There’s a lot to look at on the labels, to keep the two straight, Salvation Solution is red on the label of the Clear version. It also says Clear on the very bottom under the chair.
If you’re painting a piece pastel or white, I recommend going with the White Salvation Solution. This will not only block potential bleed through, but it will act as a first coat in coverage. Here’s what the White can looks like. Note the words Salvation Solution are in Blue and it says WHITE under the chair.
Well that’s it for this week’s new products but I have so much more to share with you!! Sit back and be inspired. This DIY post is packed full of ideas, furniture makeovers, blended color combinations and every single paint color offered by Debi’s Design Diary. Save this blog post as I’ll continue to add more photos of layered paint combos & techniques to inspire your painted furniture makeovers

DIY paint is the most amazing paint for painting furniture and creating fabulous blended pieces of art! It’s the all natural, NO-VOC, chalk & clay based paint everybody is raving about. This richly pigmented paint has outstanding coverage and the best bonding qualities allowing painters everywhere to skip the prep and just start painting.
You already know we carry only the finest quality products here at Shizzle and DIY is no exception. Debi’s DIY Paint is an all natural clay based paint handcrafted in the U.S.A. It adheres incredibly well to most surfaces without the need to strip, sand or prime so you can simply clean your piece and start painting.
When I say clean, you want to make sure you remove any grease, oil or years of Pledge build up prior to painting. We offer an excellent all natural cleaner here at Shizzle but you can also use Vinegar, Dawn dish soap, Simple Green or Phosphorus Free TSP.
There are rare situations where you might want to give your piece a quick, 5 minute scuff up but as I rule, I only scuff things up on very rare occasions. If you’re ever on the fence about whether your particular piece needs it, email a picture to me or give me a call and I can help you out.
DIY spreads on quickly and easily. It’s especially magical when layering and blending several paint colors because they meld together into serious deliciousness.
I not only love DIY because it’s an amazing paint, I love the entire package because of the people within this amazing company. Friendships here are woven deeply and there is mutual respect and support stemming from the Owner. Debi works hard and is so incredibly supportive to each and every one of her retailers and everyone else in between. That respect goes in all directions as I’ve never been part of such a great network of women supporting and helping other women. I could go on and on but for now… I’d like to share the beautiful paint colors of DIY.
Aviary
Bead Board – white white with gray undertones
Black Velvet is an “almost black” graphite/slate type color
Blue Iris – this seriously is the color of an iris flower or that blue in a peacock feather, very highly pigmented and fantastic for artists at all levels
Bohemian Blue – Hand’s down one of our very best sellers, this blue is absolutely stunning no mater what you later it with or how you finish it!
Bohemian Blue is currently the number one selling paint color at DIY and for good reason, just look at it!
I painted this buffet with Carnival Red and Queen Bee – Sealed with Clear Wax
Cherry Picked
Crinoline is a warm, creamy white with yellow undertones
It only took a few seconds to accomplish this paint finish using DIY’s Crinoline.
This is such a rich color. I love mixing it with white and Letterpress for my table tops.
This is a great green ~ I’ll never tire of blending blues and greens
Apothecary (top left), Farm Fresh (lower right)
I painted this highboy with Farm Fresh then spritzed with both Bohemian Blue and Queen Bee, Sealed with Clear and White Wax
Farm Fresh is so gorgeous!!! Love this color!
Fire Starter
I sealed this with Clear Wax but I must have still had some white wax on the bristles because there’s just a hint of white in the grooves.
Gypsy Green is a bit deeper, darker and warmer in tone than Fancy Farm Girl. It has more brown undertones whereas Fancy Farmgirl is more bold and vibrant.
This is another hot selling blue ~ rich and boldly pigmented. It looks a lot brighter in the picture of the can; it’s really more of a navy blue.
Kissing Booth
Kissing Booth, Old ’57 & White Swan Paint Pour using Clear Liquid Patina as a medium
How fun is this? Have you ever done a paint pour? It’s so much fun!
Yep, definitely had a little white wax on my brush when I sealed these. It’s mostly clear wax but I was double dipping the day I made these
Liquid Sunshine
This is the blacker of the two blacks ~ a true black
I mixed blended a little Golden Ticket over the Marquee to create this!
Mermaid Tail is a beautiful blue, richly saturated with warm undertones
Bohemian Blue, Crinoline, Old ’57, Fancy Farm Girl & Clear Wax
Monet’s Garden
Crinoline over Old School & Old ’57 over Fancy Farm Girl
Did I mention I like Old ’57?
Create a faux verdigris finish with DIY Paints
Old School brushed w Crinoline sealed with Clear, Dark, White & Black Wax
Old School – drying
This one has been flying off the shelves as well
Need I say more? So feminine and pretty!
Check out this combo!
This is gorgeous!!! Great alone and as a mixer!
Salty Kiss
Sea Glass is another stunning blue!
Skeleton Key is a rich, frenchy gray-green color
I remember my first love, do you?
Tarnished Pearl
Tarnished Pearl is a white with gray / brown undertones.
Water Lily
I LOVE Weathered Wood!
White Swan is a beautiful warm white. Both White Swan and Bead Board are whiter whites, but White Swan has warmer undertones where Bead Board is more cool.
Clear Brush on or Sponge on Top Coat
Rich espresso brown wax
