David Beckham is feeling positive after undergoing surgery

English footballer David Beckham said he was “feeling positive”

after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon as

the England midfielder thanked fans for

a flood of messages of support since the injury that

has ended his chances of making the World Cup finals in South Africa.

In a statement on his website, Beckham said:

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for

their messages of support, they mean a lot to me.

“The operation was a success and I’d like to thank Dr Orava and all

the medical staff who looked after me during my time in Finland.

I’m feeling positive and now concentrating on getting back to full fitness over

the coming months.”

Earlier Gordon Brown sent the footballer a message to wish him a “speedy recovery”

after he was injured while playing for AC Milan on Sunday.

Beckham, who underwent surgery in Finland on Monday,

is expected to be out of action for five months.

Mr Brown’s spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has indeed sent him a message.

“He emphasised what a tremendous ambassador Mr Beckham is for English soccer and

wishes him well in his recovery, as I think the whole nation does.”

Beckham is expected to make a full recovery,

but the player’s surgeon said he will not be able to take part in the World Cup Football 2010,

which starts on June 11.

Prof Orava said: “Healing takes a long time.

It is difficult to say how long the recovery period will be

but I would guess it will be three or four months and, for example,

for running it usually takes four or five months until one can do it properly.”

England manager Fabio Capello also indicated that the former captain would not be fit

in time for the tournament.

The Italian, who spoke to Beckham after the injury,

said: “David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup,

so missing it will be a big blow.”

Beckham pulled up during AC Milan’s Serie A encounter with Chievo without

coming into contact with anyone else.

He then limped to the sidelines for treatment, distraught.

The star midfielder David Beckham recently joined AC Milan for

a second loan spell from Los Angeles Galaxy in a bid to prove his fitness to Capello.

Conan O'Brien has refused NBC's plan to move

LOS ANGELES – Conan O'Brien has refused to play along with NBC's plan
to move "The Tonight Show" and return Jay Leno to late-night,
abruptly derailing the network's effort to resolve its scheduling mess.

O'Brien said in a statement Tuesday that shifting "Tonight" will "seriously
damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in
the history of broadcasting," and he expressed disappointment
that NBC had given him less than a year to establish himself as host at 11:35 p.m. EST.

O'Brien is in line to make approximately $30 million from NBC
if he is replaced on "The Tonight Show" or if the show is canceled,
said a source close to the situation who spoke on the condition of
anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about it publicly.
However, the source said the sum would not apply just for moving O'Brien to a later time slot.

O'Brien said he doesn't have an offer in hand from another network.
Fox, which lacks a network late-night show, has expressed its
appreciation for him but said this week that no negotiations have been held.

'American Idol' returns with new judge

the curtains go up on the show's ninth season -- including
the absence of Paula Abdul, the addition of Ellen DeGeneres,
and Simon Cowell serving on the judging panel for the final time.

American Idol's ninth season will premiere over the course of
two consecutive nights with a two-hour broadcast on Tuesday,
January 12 and a 75-minute broadcast on Wednesday, January 13 -- with
both beginning at 8PM ET/PT.

It will represent the beginning of the end for Cowell,
as Fox confirmed yesterday that he will be leaving American
Idol after its 2010 season to focus on launching a U.S. version
of his British The X Factor reality competition series for the network in Fall 2011.

Cowell spent a better part of last year stating he was
unsure whether he'd remain with American Idol once
the five-season extension he signed in 2005 expires
after the show's ninth season this year, and he
insisted his coy comments when asked about the
situation were not a negotiating ploy.

"But when we looked at the practicalities of that,
it was impossible," Cowell said Monday.

"In my opinion, it's like having a good player and a good football team.
The two have to be OK together. I believe it's not my show, but
it's still very close to me. We made sure when we did this,
that I would be protected. I'm confident it will continue to be the No.
1 show. Everyone is committed to keeping it that way."

Due to her last-minute surprise departure, last summer's ninth-season auditions
featured a series of guest judges in her former judging
seat: Victoria Beckham (Denver and Boston), Mary J. Blige (Atlanta),
Joe Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris (Dallas), Kristin Chenoweth (Orlando),
Shania Twain (Chicago), and Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne (Los Angeles).

"All the guest judges on the Idol auditions gave a different perspective
because they've all been performers of all different types, and different
types of music and stage and record and everything," judge Randy Jackson
told reporters during a conference call last week.

In September, Fox announced that it had tapped DeGeneres to replace
Abdul -- and she'll make her American Idol debut during the ninth
season's first "Hollywood Round" broadcast on February 9.

"I'm not going to be mean anyway. I hate when Simon is that mean,
" said DeGeneres in September. "You can be constructive and you
can criticize somebody in a way that's helpful instead of mean spirited."

Almost immediately, DeGeneres had to respond to critics who felt
her lack of experience in the music industry would hurt the show.

"I love music, period. I've always loved music," she said at the time,
defending herself.

"And I'm a huge fan of the show. I haven't missed one show since Season 1.
The people are the ones that choose the 'American Idol.' Ultimately
it doesn't come down to some expert in the music industry,
it comes down to everybody at home that says, 'That's the person I relate to,
that's the person that I'm going to buy music from.'"

Fox reality chief Mike Darnell also called the criticism "silly."

"We already got three judges. We used to only have three
who have enormously long musical backgrounds," he said at the time.
"She brings something different. She brings her wit and love of music.
She has a vision of what she likes and doesn't like. Really, does it matter?
It's about America voting. She's going to add a different flavor, that's the whole idea."

Despite the absence of Abdul and addition of DeGeneres,
the upcoming installment is returning to a familiar
format by abandoning several tweaks that were included
during last year's eighth season -- including 36 semifinalists,
a bracket-style semifinals format that ignored gender,
and the additional second-chance "Wild Card" round that
had not been used since Idol's third season in 2004.

Instead, the ninth season will feature 24 semifinalists -- 12 males
and 12 females -- and no "Wild Card" semifinals round.

Once Idol's ninth-season semifinals begin, the contestants will be divided
into male and female groups and compete separately. Both groups will
then gradually be whittled to six finalists via three semifinals
performance rounds that will eliminate two male and two female
semifinalists each week based on viewer voting.

Like American Idol's most recent pre-2009 editions, the format will result
in each finalist having given three semifinals performances and
a gender-balanced finalist field.

American Idol's Top 12 ninth-season finalists will take
the stage for the first time on Tuesday, March 16, with
one finalist's journey coming to an end when home viewer
votes are revealed on Wednesday, March 17.

While Fox decided against hosting a third-annual American Idol Gives Back
charity fund-raising special last spring, the fund-raising special
will be back this year and air during the Top 7 results show broadcast on April 21.

"In today's tough economic times, it's more important than ever -- but more
difficult than ever -- to raise money to help those in need," said Darnell
when the special was announced in October.

"With this year's American Idol Gives Back, we're focused on raising awareness
about the challenges that so many children and families currently face and

Casey johnson was found dead Monday in her home

The 30-year-old was pronounced dead Monday morning after being
discovered by Los Angeles, California, police officers.

"The Johnson family wishes to thank everyone who has expressed
condolences and support during this trying time," said family
spokesman Jesse Derris. "Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated.

The socialite's family has arranged for her body to be "flown
back east to her final resting place," Derris said. No other
details were announced.

"The family asks for a measure of privacy over the next several
days as they mourn their loss," Derris said.

Johnson, who made tabloid headlines recently by getting engaged
to reality star Tila Tequila, was found dead Monday in her Los Angeles,
California, home. Johnson had suffered from diabetes since she was a
child and had battled drug problems in the past, though no cause of
death has been determined and police found no obvious signs that she
had taken illegal drugs.

Her family said people can make donations in her memory to the Casey
Johnson Memorial at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
"Casey struggled throughout her life fighting this disease, and
she would want to see all of us continue that fight on her behalf,"
said the family spokesman.

"In bed crying, looking at baby pictures of Casey, Nicky and I.
I feel so upset. I feel like I've lost a sister. My heart is broken.
Miss her," Paris Hilton posted to Twitter.

Nicky Hilton concurred, posting, "Rest in pace Casey Johnson.
I love and miss you so much. You are my best friend,
my sister...I am broken without you."

Johnson is survived by her daughter Ava-Monroe. She adopted
the girl from Kazakhstan in 2007. Ava has been living with Casey's mother,
Sale, for the past several months, according to a family spokesman.

The year before adopting Ava, Johnson told an interviewer she had
recently come back from a trip to poverty-stricken Cambodia with
a new outlook on life.

She allowed the reporter, from Vanity Fair, to visit her two-story
Spanish-style mansion in Los Angeles. That included a room-sized
closet with dozens of pairs of designer shoes, but she admitted
that amid all the luxury she felt like she had so much more than
she would ever need. Still, she said, growing up rich "has its good side."

More recently, after ending a tumultuous relationship with a
boyfriend, Johnson began dating women and was recently romantically
linked to the flamboyant bisexual reality TV star Tila Tequila.

Tequila's publicist said the two were engaged. On her Twitter page,

production Dabanng (produced by Arbaaz Khan) Salman has his
hands full with loads and loads of young fans, who seem to be
flocking into his temporary residence in numbers larger than
the security can handle.

The reason for this is simple. Salman is staying at a resort
called the Ravine in Panchgani. And right next door is a kids' school.
Once the kids got to know who's staying next-door they have been
abandoning their studies, climbing across the wall dividing the school
from the resort to meet their Salman Uncle.

Says a source close to Salman, "Once the school kids from
the school next-door got to know Salman was staying at the resort
they've been spending as much time as possible with
the star in their midst. At first the Dabanng unit tried to keep

Mannat, SRK's Bandra residence seems to be the place to be for SRK in keeping with plans for a quiet family time.
While Karan continues to move ahead with the editing
and soundwork of MY NAME IS KHAN in Mumbai, which compels him to
abandon celebration.

Sources reveal that Karan's initial plans were to ring in the New
Year abroad with Dubai villa as the pit-stop for SRK over the holidays.
Now it seems that SRK will return from Dubai to spend a quiet new year
at his home with Karan canceling his overseas plans as he did last year
due to the November terror attacks in Mumbai.

the 3d avatar movie by James Cameron towers high at $75 million,
which is almost 20 million dollars higher than runner-up '
Sherlock Holmes'. A strong Christmas Day at the U.S. Box
Office didn't give " Sherlock Holmes " the push it needed
to dethrone James Cameron's sci-fi love story " Avatar "
over the weekend (25-27 Dec 09).

it was the top film in the U.S. and Canada with $75 million in sales
as Hollywood posted its highest-grossing weekend ever.
Receipts totaled $278 million.

the director of avatar mr.james cameron is more often
than not the main marketing tool. He has endorsed RealD,
says the company, which has about 5,000 screens using its system.
But he, his wife and his production partner were photographed
at the premiere in Japan wearing XpanD glasses, which work on
2,000 screens worldwide. Dolby says its glasses work with 2,200 screens,
but it has no Cameron connection. The company helpfully
points out instead how a malfunction in the RealD system
spoiled a press preview of "Avatar."

The battle over what glasses patrons wear is a big deal because
exhibitors are convinced that 3-D, while seeming like a gimmick now,
will lure movie lovers away from their crisp high-definition
widescreen TVs at home and back to the theater. But Maria Costeira,
the chief executive of XpanD, believes the sky's
the limit: "Eventually, we'll see 3-D movies on airplanes as well."

The fight over the glasses may well intensify because TV makers are now
pushing 3-D TVs for the home as a way to increase their sales of more expensive sets.

Despite the marketing effort, when it comes down to choosing a 3-D system,
many exhibitors are making a decision based on one factor: Do they want
to be in the cleaning as well as the movie business?

The expensive Dolby and XpanD glasses are going into a dishwasher after each use,
not the trash. Both companies recommend that theater owners clean
them in an industrial-grade machine. (To prevent pilfering, Dolby
and XpanD glasses can also contain built-in antitheft tags that can
be activated by exit-door sensors.)

XpanD offers its theater partners disposable wipes that it can
distribute to customers along with their tickets to assure them
the glasses are germ-free.

RealD, whose cheap throwaway glasses were being perceived as a liability,
has addressed concerns of hygiene. Theater owners are now encouraged to
ship back the used glasses to the company, which will clean, repair and
repackage them for other theaters.

But in all the hubbub about each product's advantages and which system
Mr. Cameron really, truly loves, the most important question remains
unanswered: does one system create a better looking 3-D picture than another?

"I don't think the consumer can tell the difference," said Joe Miraglia,
the director of design, construction, and facilities for ArcLight Cinemas,
a chain of luxury theaters based in Hollywood. The movie chain uses each
system in one or more of its theaters, and finds the cost of operation to
be roughly the same for all.

While Mr. Miraglia uses RealD in several theaters, he chose XpanD's
LCD glasses for the large curved screen in the company's flagship Cinerama
Dome theater on Sunset Boulevard. This is similar to the technology that
will be used by Panasonic, Sony and others as they bring 3-D HDTV to
market next year. Recently, electronics makers set standards for creating
3-D Blu-ray discs and players.

But in order to make the wearing of 3-D glasses as routine as ordering popcorn,
the makers need some help in the design department. Many of the glasses
resemble the "fitover," or wraparound sunglasses favored by senior
citizens in the Sun Belt, a look that is not appealing to young moviegoers.

RealD and XpanD hope that 3-D will soon become a fashion statement.
In addition to its standard movie glasses, RealD is introducing child-size
versions, as well as high-style 3-D specs that people can wear without
embarrassment out in the three-dimensional world as sunglasses or prescription lenses.

Ms. Costeira of XpanD thinks personalized designs that can be used
with 3-D HDTVs and video games could turn into something big. "Stylish,
thin and light, 3-D glasses will become your new iPod," she said.

Rachel McAdams travels in time with ‘Sherlock Holmes’

Fresh from the romance-fantasy hit “The Time Traveler’s Wife,
” Rachel McAdams now literally goes to the past in Warner Bros.’
Victorian era-set action-adventure “Sherlock Holmes.” McAdams
portrays Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested
Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Joel Silver, “Sherlock
Holmes” stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, Jude Law as
Watson and Mark Strong as the villain Blackwood.

In the following interview, McAdams articulates her thoughts on
“Sherlock Holmes” and why she agreed to do the film.

Q: Can you talk a little bit about Irene Adler, Sherlock’s love interest?
A: Well, Irene is really fun because she’s totally a kind
of woman for the late 1800s. She’s very independent. She’s
very active. She kind of lives in the underworld. There’s
only one story where Irene is introduced, “Scandal in Bohemia,”
and it’s a really fun story between her and Sherlock. She happens
to beat Sherlock at his own game, and it’s the first time a woman has ever done that.

So we developed this kind of strange love affair, (laughs)
a very unique love affair. We just kind of played on that,
but we’re very competitive with one another and we’re trying
to outsmart each other all the time, and yet trying to have
this odd, normal relationship, which is nearly impossible. It’s fun.

Q: What’s it like playing games with Robert Downey Jr.?
A: I really think that Robert is the modern day superhero.
I mean, you should see him work. He’s so committed and so ripped. (Laughs).

Q: Robert said it’s really embarrassing that you always kick
his ass, and that Irene Adler just lays out Sherlock seemingly at will…
A: That’s Guy Richie’s fault, because like every three scenes,
he’d go, “How about you kick him in the nuts? (Laughs) But we
haven’t done that for at least 10 days.

Q: How much did you use Arthur Conan Doyle’s books as reference
for your character and for the film as a whole?
A: I combed the 10 pages that I was in (laughs) over and over.
I read it backwards and upside-down. Yeah. I mean it’s the “Scandal
in Bohemia” story, so I relied heavily on that. And then I
just played around with it from there – I had her in the circus,
and I had an adopted brother that died fighting for his revenge.
You build all these little things in your head so that it’s all
really urgent and dire. But I spent a lot of time with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Irene.

Q: Did you have a lot of fun doing this? Can you talk about the
costumes and how that worked within your character?
A: Yeah, Irene Adler is a really fun character to play, because
she’s quite different from a lot of women at that time. She’s
really her own boss. She’s a real free spirit. And she’s a woman
of the night and of the underworld. So she’s very acrobatic and
she has traveled all over the world. So, there’s a lot to play there.

And then the costumes – I mean, I’m such a girly-girl. So, it was
like a paper doll. I was in heaven just being dressed from the
head down. And the costumes are incredible – I mean, real-life
corsets with the bones and totally cinched in. I would try to
push my belly out in the morning when they would come and strap
me in. I mean, it really was like out of “Gone With the Wind”
and I’m holding onto the trailer door and trying to eke out just
a little bit of space so I can speak properly. But they managed
to squeeze me in everyday. They’d try to make me laugh, and on the
laugh, they’d yank. (Laughs) But it was so much fun to be that
authentic, to be really dropped right into the period. It was great.
