So if you, like most people, have been listening to top 40 radio, you may have heard this new song going around. As the first single for the chart topping album "Lasers" by Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On" has been getting tons of air time and is quickly filling up listeners iPods and cell phones. At first listen the song sounds great. The song has a great positive message, especially for the minority African - American's of the U.S. Basically it discuses the current problems that minorities face in today's culture and that even when the going get's tough, as the cliche goes, the show must go on.

Of course all that sounds great, however back in 2004 the indie band Modest Mouse released the song "Float On." Similar to "The Show Goes On" Modest Mouse's signature single discusses the idea that even when things seem bad, you must look for the good in every situation. Besides having very similar themes, both songs also feature the exact same melody, based off of Pachebel's Canon.

Personally I don't think it's just a coincidence, but of course you can decide yourself. Take a listen.

The other day I was doing the usual, searching Facebook to listen to some awesome, yet still undiscovered bands. I came across one band that had an amazing offer. You could download their entire new album entirely free! So I clicked on the link and found one of my new favorite websites. If you have never heard of NoiseTrade.com you need to go check it out now! In fact, I'll include the link before I even finish my post. Click here

Now what makes NoiseTrade different from other music download sites is incredible. First, they legally offer free downloads of bands anywhere from local indie groups who post their music to some bands touring nationally and internationally. All they request is that you submit them your zip code and email address to join the band's mailing list. You can go check your email for the link to the download and next thing you know you're rocking out in your bedroom to some sweet tunes. However, this is only the beginning to NoiseTrade's genius.

When a band's music is uploaded to the site, the album is placed on its on searchable profile. Included on this profile are widgets to "like" the band or musician's Facebook page, visit their various online presences, buy their music, view their twitter stream, and share the music on your own Facebook page, twitter, or email, and leave a comment. This allows for great viral growth for the band's featured!

However, although NoiseTrade.com has some amazing features, my favorite of them is the unique idea to allow viewers to donate to the band what they believe the album is worth. Sure you can get your music for free by just submitting your information, but if you have ever been in a band, you know the hard work and expensive gear it takes to create some amazing music. It's a really humbling experience as a band if you are essentially told what you are worth. I love this concept, so way to go NoiseTrade.com!

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend

It is amazing the way certain things become associated with each other. For instance, the smell of hot chocolate may remind you of coming inside after sledding on a cold winter day. The soft and springy texture of long green grass might conjure memories of playing a game of tag barefoot in the park. The taste of cherry cough drops may bring back bad memories of a long forgotten bout of the flu. But if you are like me, the songs of New York City band Vampire Weekend evoke images, ideas, and feelings about one specific topic; summer.

After meeting at Columbia University in 2006, Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio formed their eclectic and eccentric band, releasing their premier eponym album in 2008. Their work is catchy and surprising, with interesting percussion and brass instruments that fit in and flow seamlessly with the music.

An interesting song of the band, "One (Blake's Got a New Face)" gives a great portrayal of Vampire Weekend's typical sound. Led in by a guitar intro, the smooth percussion is quickly joined by a light techno beat. Ezra's vocals are earnest and descriptive and is joined by the other band members for the call and response chorus. The song is relaxing but is also unexpectedly upbeat.

"Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" is a more widely recognized song, but Vampire Weekend's sound can hardly be considered "main stream". With djembes accompanying a catchy guitar riff, the song moves quickly, befitting the clever songwriting and lyrics. All in all, the song is very appropriate for it's namesake ocean front town in New England.

Another excellent song by the band is "Giving Up the Gun". The African-influenced percussion sets the stage for the funky instrumentals and techno elements that are incorporated along with the encouraging lyrics and even a choir at one point. And although this is unrelated to the music itself, the video boasts an epic tennis tournament of celebrities (Jake Gyllenhaall, Lil' John, and *gasp* Joe Jonas."), which just makes this already insanely catchy song even better.

Vampire Weekend's pop punk sound blended with their slightly nerdy, but certainly endearing image makes them well worth a listen. Their light, energetic sound is a quick and effective way to brighten your outlook and get you in a summertime mood. So next time you are stressing over a hard project or worrying about a deadline and need to relax, breathe deeply, calm your mind, and let Vampire Weekend do the rest.

Two Door Cinema Club

Straight out of Ireland with plenty of carrying guitar lines backed up by electronic beats as well as lyrics that are sure to be stuck in your head all day, Two Door Cinema club's music is infectious to say the least. With the release of their first album "Tourist History" in March of 2010, Sam Halliday, Alex Trimble, and Kevin Baird caught the attention of listeners in Ireland as well as other European countries.
Two Door Cinema Club first appeared on the radar in the US with singles off their album "Now I Can Talk" and "What You Know." Their music is amazingly smooth, blending the clever lyrics with their trademark instrumentals.

"Undercover Martyn" begins with a punchy guitar line, then backs off a tad with more relaxed vocals, but the tempo returns through the chorus, which is punctuated by "whoahs," which does nothing but benefit an already solid song.

Another excellent song from the group from County Down is "Something Good Can Work." With lightning fast lyrics, Two Door Cinema Club's usual energizing beats, and a bridge consisting of a bit of pub-esque shouting, it holds up well among all of their other excellent work.

As for their most popular song in the States, "What You Know" leads in, like most of their songs, with a sweet guitar riff, then backs off a bit to bare vocals with some rhythm. But the speed is quickly returned after the verse. Towards the end of the song, they break it down a bit with some more a more techno approach before returning to their usual style to end the song in fine form.

Among other praise on a few of Two Door Cinema Club's videos on YouTube, self proclaimed "Metalheads" say that they are surprisingly very fond of Two Door Cinema Club's sound. So even if this style is not exactly your thing, give them a shot. If nothing else, they will have you humming/whistling/singing their lyrics constantly.

Boltcutter Dubstep - Riley Bradway

When you think of "hardcore music," you're probably going to be thinking of screamo or metal rock. These styles are alright, but they're somewhat repeated constantly through new local bands who are trying to become famous like the original creators of hardcore music. Well there's another type of hardcore music, and it's called dubstep. This style is the hardest, "bassiest," deepest techno around. This week we're highlighting Boltcutter née Riley Bradway, a dubstep artist who's trying to spread the music.

Boltcutter, née Riley Bradway, is an experimental dubstep producer from Moodus, CT. He has been creating, producing, and DJing electronic music for about a year. This experience shows that his dubstep skills are backed up with his background in the techno genre. Over the past year, he has amassed a good-sized following on various websites, including praise from icons such as Mojo Dubstep, LU10 Records, and Synthetic Epiphany. Included with all of these accomplishments, he has remixed several different kinds of music, including Far East Movement's "Like A G6" and A Day To Remember's "You Be Tails, I'll Be Sonic." As for his inspirations, Boltcutter has taken influence from almost everywhere imaginable. Core dubstep influences include Chrispy, Kaney, Skrillex, Tek-One, Mojo, C99, and Quartus Saul. He has also been impacted by the drum & bass movement, with artists like Delta Heavy and Roni Size. Others are Deadmau5, Diplo, Attack Attack!, Klaas, Chris Lake, and Bar9.

As for advice for upcoming producers, Boltcutter has a few things to say: "It's easy to make it in dubstep production these days because everyone is listening to it. That's also the problem: there are so many dubstep artists out there, it becomes difficult to distinguish yourself from others. Here's my advice: don't use presets. Make the sounds your own. Slave over your waveforms if you need to. Make sure there's something to your music that sets it apart from others."

If you don't know what dubstep is, or what it sounds like, now is a great time to look into the style. It's starting to sprout all over the world, and there's no stopping a viral style of music. Go check out Bolcutter's dubstep if you're just getting a taste of this wild style. And if you already know about this genre, go listen to him anyway so that you have some new heavy bass for your sub woofers in our car.

Cover Songs

Rebecca Black from Youtube Sensation "Friday"

In all honesty, there are some songs that come on the radio that you hear once and wish would just disappear. (*Cough Cough* "Friday" by Rebecca Black.) But surprisingly, the right song redone by the right band can make even the worst songs into something fresh and new. "Friday" by Crash City for instance took a cookie cutter pop song with questionable lyrics and vocals and made it into a decent, self respecting song.

Another so-so song with an amazing cover is "Single Ladies" by Beyonce. The original song was catchy and quickly went viral with some mechanic wrist movements, but A Rocket To The Moon's version is sweet, slow, and sung from the perspective of their lead vocalist, Nick Santino, as a guy rather than a diva.

As for a rap song that went screamo, "Lollipop" by Lil' Wayne was popular a few years ago, but was briefly resurrected as a cover by Framing Hanley. With less autotune and drum machines and more screaming and guitars, "Lollipop" becomes a whole new experience. The song loses none of it's appeal, rather changes to a new genre that reaches a different listener group.

Although the original for "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service is a great electronic song, if the Owl Cityesque melody does not suit your taste, try Confide's version. They start off with the normal intro, but once the vocals come in, it is no longer Ben Gibbards smooth singing but Ross Kenyon's signature screaming and the trademark loud guitars of Confide's metal sound.

A rather unique cover that includes beer bottle percussion, homemade marracas, and one very small accordion is "Womanizer" a song made by Britney Spears but perfected by the All-American Rejects. Another cover of the same song is done by Franz Ferdinand which has a solid guitar solo and bluesy syle, which makes it well worth a listen as well.

Lastly, "Umbrella" by Rihanna struck a chord with both avid R&B and pop listeners, but left rock fans with something to be desired. Fortunately, pop punk Baltimore based band All Time Low took it upon themselves to fill that void. Their version is fast moving with All Time Low's usual, pop with a punch sound, but Rihanna's catchy lyrics.

So, just as the cliche goes "don't judge a book by it's cover", don't judge a cover by it's original.

The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers

"Alternative." "Bluegrass." "Indie." "Folk." "Pop." "Country." "Rock." What do these words have in common?

For one thing, they are all genres of music. But they are also all labels given to an eclectic band from Concord North Carolina, The Avett Brothers.

The Avett Brothers flawlessly combine precise percussion, sweet piano parts, plucky banjos, orchestral instruments, and even some hard core guitar lines with harmonious vocals. This may sound random and eccentric, but it suits members Seth and Scott Avett, Bob Crawford, Joe Kwon, and Jacob Edwards just fine.

Although their sound in each song is a little different, catchy lyrics and superb delivery are prevalent. Their music is easy to sing along with and highlights relatable emotions like love, want, and regret.

In "The Perfect Space," the song is chill and quiet, with a soothing violin and cello supporting the sincere vocals. But suddenly, the tempo speeds up, the piano and percussion come in, and the singing becomes louder and more upbeat (with some screaming for emphasis). But as the song again regresses to a slower pace, they still maintain the same appeal and good qualities without losing the listener's interest.

A more popular song, "I and Love and You," has charmed listeners with it's carrying piano line and uplifting message. Scott and Seth Avett's voices blend together seamlessly to create a warm sound that fits their introspective lyrics perfectly. They are so synchronized, it's easy to believe that they are brothers.

But if blended vocals and relaxing instrumentals are not what you are looking for, try "Kick Drum Heart." With a pulsating bass drum punctuating the singing, the piano part and the rhythymic tambourine keep the music pulsing and provides a more upbeat sound while still retaining The Avett Brother's trademark sound.

Because of their diverse and varied style, The Avett Brothers have a little something for everyone. Even if country music is usually not your thing, or if you find banjo music minorly annoying, give The Avett Brothers a chance. Their music is always interesting, yet easy to listen to. So get out of your usual music "comfort zone," set up a Pandora station for The Avett Brothers, and get ready for a unique musical experience.

Now don't freak out. We know that the name of this artist tells us not to do this...but we're shouting crazy things for Never Shout Never. He knows what he's doing. Never Shout Never is the master of love songs, romantic music, etc. If you need advice on how to ask your secret crush to prom, or if you're ready to make things serious, please take lessons from the songs of Never Shout Never.

Love has been what music is about for years. Artists sing of new love, old love, lost love, imaginary love, etc. It seems like it would get old right? Not if the ways we express the idea change. Never Shout Never takes a bubblegum feel and adds it to hissing along tunes to give the full romantic effect. Lets take a closer look.

Never Shout Never is famous for his "body percussion." In some of his songs, there are sections where he snaps his fingers or claps his hands. This idea creates the genius effect of the audience or listener getting involved. For instance..If you were at a campfire or together with friends, and someone pulled out a guitar and got people to start clapping to the song, the environment would be a great place to be. The use of these body percussions allow the listener to feel involved, and from the romantic side of things, the girls that Never Shout Never is singing to feel closer to the artist with these cool beats.

The most important part of Never Shout Never's songs are his lyrics. They're very simple and straightforward, because to be honest, not all fans can understand the metaphors that some artists use in their songs. Never Shout Never makes everything easy by giving easy lyrics to listen to and sing along to as well. When the song is simple, catchy, and easy to sing along to, that's when fans go nuts for the artist. In this case, Never Shout Never is constantly bombarded with his crazy female fans.

Never Shout Never is basically the ladies man. He shows his sensative side in his songs and plays great music for his fans. His fans, of course, love his music almost as much as they love him. With the use of these "body beats," or "body percussion," he can involve his audience, and his lyrics give the fans something easy to understand. If you're not going nuts over this artist yet, go listen to his music. It's great stuff. You gotta hear it to believe it.

The New Politics

The New Politics

"You walk the streets, never feel no guilt, you make your money selling guns on the playground. I'm so ashamed 'cause we're all the same, killing in the name, money is a game now. And you're buying bombs and we pay the price, eat your lies and we feed it to the children. Is this what you want? Is this what you need? You're gonna kill us all to make peace."

Just chew on that quote for a while.... Does it make you want to make an impact on the world? If so; good! That is exactly what the New Politics are looking for. In an age when a lot of music sounds similar and lyrics are only skin deep, the New Politics are trying to give a voice and promote change to a generation.

The New Politics consist of three Danish musicians, Soren, David, and Poul, who believe in taking risks and doing what you love. And they do just that through their music and parkour influenced videos. Their song "Dignity" shows off their impressive and somewhat aggressive sound. The instrumental is heavy and sets the tone for the in your face lyrics. Vocals alternate between singing/screaming to rapping, which rather than being excessive, just seems to emphasize the point trying to be made.

Another trademark New Politics' track is "Yeah Yeah Yeah." In this song they utilize dark guitar chords, pounding drums, and a pulsating bass line that carries the whole song, and for some strange reason, it really suits them. For some bands this would be chaos and dischord, but for the New Politics, it makes their music all the more poignant.

And on a completely unrelated note, The New Politics utilize the crazy talents of their vocalist David Boyds. To name a few (but not nearly all) of his stunts, running backflips off of buildings, headstands (singing all the while), and spinning on his head on top of amps. Needless to say, the New Politics live can be quite an experience.

Weezer

The nerds of rock n' roll. Weezer has left a huge footprint in the industry with they're geeky appearances and their trendy music. They've been featured on pop radio stations with "Beverly Hills," they've been given movie deals with the recent song "Memories," and they've owned the indie scene with their unique style. These guys are different, but people love it.

From day one, Weezer's amazing sound has rocked the Indie world. But what makes them so good? The answer to this question is the relation between their music and their fans. They're songs emmit crazy feelings and wishes that most listeners can relate to. For instance, "Beverly Hills," one of their more popular songs talks about the wish of living a famous life in a great city. It's basically the rockstar dream. Now quickly close your eyes and imagine the average American. They want money. They want popularity. They want recognition. These ideas are found even in the high school system. Weezer shows their listeners that it's ok to want these awesome things in life. It may sound a little bit materialistic...but the music is great so we support it.

Another example of their music relating to listeners is "Memories," from the Jackass 3D soundtrack. This song is all about the "good times," or the "old days." Everyone in the world has memories that they would love to re-live. Even if its a small one, the thought of that memory is amazing. Weezer's song just makes that memory even better. They play that song like they mean it.

Few people know that Franz Ferdinand was an archduke of Austria-Hungary who was assasinated by a radical Serbian terrorist group in 1914... But sadly, even less people associate the name "Franz Ferdinand" with a solid alternative rock band from the U.K.

Best known for their song, "No You Girls", Franz Ferdinand has a sound quite their own, with infectious melodies, catchy lyrics, beats you can dance to, and a pulsating bass. And they are able to effortlessly do this without losing any elements of classic alt rock.

A song that perfectly exemplifies the eclectic style of Franz Ferdinand is "Do You Want To". The song starts off with a loud, almost grating guitar line and the vocals of Alex Kapranos and builds to a fuller, more supported sound. But the heavy guitar riff remains prevalent throughout the whole song, keeping the upbeat tempo and perfectly backing the vocals.

Since forming in 2002 in Glasglow Scotland, Franz Ferdinand has enjoyed great success in the U.K. with some recognition in the United States. Their 3 released albums are Franz Ferdinand, You Could Have It So Much Better, and Tonight:Franz Ferdinand. They are currently recording a 4th album, but prefer not to overpublicize the release date.

Yet another great song, "Take Me Out" begins with a slightly darker sounding intro than the previously mentioned tracks, but shortly returns to the rythmic melody signature of the band. This song, along with most of their other music, practically begs you to jam along with the band as you enter into the frenzy that is known as Franz Ferdinand.

The modern day hard rockers. The sons of ACDC. The men who took the idea of the rock n' roll and carried on the legacy of great rock n' roll bands. Jet has been rocking the modern age with songs like "Cold Hard Bitch," and "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is." These songs are original yet similar to older rock n' roll ideas at the same time. If you're in the mood for some great music, listen to Jet. Lets analyze two songs that make Jet amazing.

"Cold Hard Bitch," is an amazing track. The song has a guitar part that has great tone while it plays its own beat. Along with the guitar beat, the drums are solid, heavy, and simple. These are the main ideas of older rock n' roll. To be honest...some of the old rock n' roll can get a little old, but with new recording techniques and our modern sound, Jet has transformed the genre into an art form. This song re-iterates ideas such as band cutouts/vocal solos, and strong scratchy vocals. In the verses of this song, the band cuts out after the intro to bring in the melodies of the vocals. After these cutouts, the band comes back in on a different starting chord, giving the song variety. These verses are somewhat quieter with intensity, but when the chorus comes in, you really wish you were at the Jet concert.

Another great song that shows the rockin' qualities of Jet is "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is." This songs is amazing because it brings in modern ideas to an old genre. The song is bases around distorted bass. The intro is even distored bass! The sound is amazing. During the verses, the distorted bass is layered with a crazy cowbell on the quarter notes and the vocals are falsetto. All of these ideas don't seem like a good mix, but the quiet verse sets up the blasting chorus, which has the huge intense voice of the vocals, and the meaty distortion of the guitar.

Cold Hard Bitch - Jet

Do you miss the days of hard rock n' roll? Do you want to hear the great sounds of bands such as ACDC? If so, you really need to listen to Jet. They're revolutionizing the music industry by keeping the old styles instead of converting to the new alternative. And if you don't miss those old songs, it's still a great idea to listen to the band. As we explained in the previous paragraph, Jet uses modern ideas to appeal to all listeners. Jet is today's obligation. (Oh, and of course, you can't forget to listen to everyone's favorite "Are You Gonna Be My Girl")

There's always that one song that you'll never forget. It'll be in your head for the rest of your life. It isn't like that popular song on the radio. It doesn't catch on real fast and lose interest at the same rate. It isnt...normal. The song that we have in mind to fit this description is "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap. There is no other song like this one. Filled with a complex simplicity, "Hide and Seek," has become one of our favorite tracks. What's so good about it though?

It's an empty song. There's only one instrument. The voice of Imogen Heap is the only aspect of the song that actually gives sound to the listener. A song with just singing? Nothing else? It probably sounds like a stupid idea if you're hearing it for the first time. But the amazing thing about the idea is that it's great. Singing without music behind you can be awkward. The audience might feel uncomfortable, the listener in general might not want to hear it, and the musician might not want to perform it. But for some reason, when Imogen Heap made this idea their own, it turned into an Indie phenomenon. Lets check it out.

The reason that the idea of "just voice" is so cool is because Imogen Heap uses a wierd effect. When she sings this song, the effect allows the voice track to add different harmonies. The idea has some connection with ehr keyboard. We don't know the details to the effect, but whenever she sings, her harmonies sorround the main voice. It's a fantastic sound. On top of the effect, Imogen Heap doesn't sing her song like a "normal song." She has differenct melodies. There aren't any set verses or choruses. Basically nothing repeats itself like a regular song does. It's amazing. You really just have to listen to it to fall in love.

Imogen Heap has left her mark in music history with this revolutionary song. No one in the world will ever be able to compose something similar. If you ever have the time, please look up the song and listen to it over and over again. The first time listening is love at first sight. And the rest? Well the song grows on you like a disease. So go listen! This is a musical emergency.

Forever The Sickest Kids

Forever the Sickest kids will cure you of all music sickness. Radio stations and oline websites are playing mainstream pop music that's getting old. So we really need to be thankful for this great band that came into the music industry. If you aren't familiar with this band, they play great punk/pop music. These guys know how to rock.

Lets be honest. Most people are tired of punk bands like Fall out Boy "wanna be's." So when people are asked to listen to another punk/pop band like Forever the Sickest Kids, the request doesn't go over very well. Well we're going to give you a few reasons to listen to this band over and over again.

Here's the main reason you should listen to Forever the Sickest Kids. They aren't a whiney punk band. They don't dress like depressed gothics or flamboyant rock stars and they don't sing like they're about to cry. They're music is the definition of a party. They're guitars have a meaty sound. They're lead singer projects his voice with great musicality and volume. The presence of this band is amazing. Even if you're just listening to them on your Ipod, they take over your mind. You'll fall in love from the start.

Even with they're presence, there is so much more that makes this band great. They're live show is one of the best I've seen. And it's not because of the quality of their music. When they play on stage, they try to give the effect of a party. When they play, it looks like they're having more fun then the audience is. It really is a sight to see. When the lead singer is making wierd faces at some parts, and the guitar players are switching guitars and bass guitars between each other, you know it's a lot more than just a concert. It's a show.

Basically this band is fun to listen to. If you really want the full effect of Forever the Sickest Kids, then listen to the song: "She likes." This song has sing along choruses and softer verses that allow the choruses to blast you in the face when they come in. If you're not dancing or bobbing your head by the end of the song, then we don't know what to do to cure you of music sickness.

Lets take a trip to New York. One of the hardest places to make it in music. If you're a native of the New York land, then you've probably heard of an artist by the name of Jacob Vanags. Jacob Vanags is one of the results of the revolutionary pop piano style created by Ben Folds. The only difference about Jacob Vanags is the elimination of jazz in his style. Being that Jacob Vanags is based soley on the pop genre in his piano style makes him a much more popular choice in New York.

Why do we, the Indie Team, like Jacob Vanags? What makes him stand out from other musicians. Well to be quite honest, Jacob Vanags isn't a super popular artist. He's basically a local New York musician. He doesn't compete in the music industry with mainstream artists yet, but we feel that he has the potential to do so. It's just a matter of time. But to answer the previous question, we would have to say his offstage actions do the trick for standing out from other musicians.

Of course Jacob Vanags is a good musican. Of course he has a good live show. And of course he has great original music. That's a given. Why else would he be on our blog? The reason he stands out is because he makes people feel great. His live show isn't just entertainment, it's involvement. I actually produced a show with Jacob Vanags. The whole experience was great. He ended up driving from New York to Pennsylvania just to play for a small crowd. As he set up his equipment, he interacted with local fans who showed up early. He stayed after the show to talk with some new fans he made. And most importantly he worked well with all of the employees at the venue. It was like everyone was already friends with Jacob Vanags.

Why Jacob Vanags? I've never heard of this guy in my life! These are typical things that you might be saying to yourself right now. The man is phenomenol. Ben Folds

We're going to change things up today. Did you ever enjoy jazz music? How about swing? Some of us here on the indie team do, but still, others feel the styles a little outdated. What about Pop Jazz/Pop Piano? Oh yes. We love Ben Folds. He exemplifies the idea of Pop Piano with his newer music by using three simple instruments. Four piece bands dominate the industry. Sometimes people try and get out of that by having five guitar players, three lead singers, and two drummers. We find that stupid. But when you take three musicians, give them simple instruments, and they make an awesome sound, you know for a fact that that band is talented.

Lets start things with the bass guitar. This instrument doesn't get as much credit as it deserves. But when Ben Folds uses it to give his listeners some low tones, people always want more. In the songs of Ben Folds, the bass guitar doesn't really have leads, but it provides the song with great tones. As Benny Boy plays the high tones of the piano, the bass player evens out the sound with bass slides and distortion. It sounds awesome. One song that we really love the bass in is called "Brainwascht" from the Way to Normal album. There are tons of bass runs in this song and these parts really set the mood for the song.

Lets move on to the drums. There is only one word that can describe the new sound of Ben Folds. Simple! Simple is what we love as the Indie Team. The drummer isn't trying to stand out from the other musicians by playing crazy grooves or playing too loud. He's just back there setting the foundation for the song. And we're not saying that his beats are easy either. A simple sound is much different from an easy sound. The drummer provides the listener with ghost notes and cool open high hat hits. These beats are not easy to play, but they're easy to listen to and comprehend. We love the drums in any Ben Folds Song. To hear some cool drums, check out the song "Hiroshima" from the Way to Normal album.

We saved the best for last. The piano. We love the way Ben Folds plays, but the more we listen, the more we love his chord progressions. They have a different sound to them. And we can't describe it. Ben Folds can base his chord progressions around any feeling that he wants to project. Whether it's an upbeat song, or a slow ballad, Ben Folds emmits those emotions through the chords. They sound so good. One of the many songs that show this, would be "Underground," one of Ben Folds's earlier tunes.

Folk music doesn't sound fun in todays music scene (though you have to love Bob Dylan back during the Civil Rights Movement) Just about everyone can agree with the Indie Team on that note. But there's a band out there that knows how to mask it. Mumford & Sons has taken the genre of folk music and masked it with the cool sounds of Indie and modern alternative rock. This band has become one of the most fantastic bands in the Indie music industry becoming famous with their unique style. There are a few things that make this British band really stand out...

First and foremost, Mumford and Sons uses one key concept throughout their music. "Four on the Floor," kick drum. This gives their songs a simplicity that anyone can pick up on, making it easier for the listener to comprehend the talent. In other words, it's easy to listen to. Their not on stage ripping out massive tap solos on their guitars or kicking sick drum beats that mask the downbeat. Their just playing music. Mumford and Sons has a way of relaying awesome music in a simple way.

The next thing that makes this band amazing the acoustic feel. Acoustic in our day and age is usually associated with the whiney alternative music that guys play to get girls. Well not in this case. The acoustic feel with Mumford and Sons is powerful. They have soft verses with a drive, and huge choruses that show massive sound. All of this is accomplished with their acoustic instruments. It's amazing how Mumford and Sons can match the intensity of any rock band playing music. The difference is that Mumford and Sons are once again making things simple instead of using crazy effects and pedals to go for a unique sound.

If there's anything that we would like you to learn from this, it's that this band is something new. The word "new" is key to making it in the music industry these days. Mumford and Sons stand out from the rest of the crowd, and they know how to rock with acoustic tones. Check out this great band from the links provided.

Crash Kings

You're about to take a crash course into the kings of piano rock n' roll. What's that? You don't know what that is? I'll tell you right now that the definition of piano rock is the band by the name of Crash Kings. They take the sweet delicacy out of piano and replace it with killer chords. They take the distortion from guitar and give it to their bass. They take the amazing style of Chris Cornell's voice (lead singer of Audioslave) and turn it into their own. They take the rules of rock, and they break them over their instruments. This band is sweet.

Lets analyze how this concoction works. What gives this band originality? What's the icing on the cake? The thing that makes this band amazing is their lead singer Tony Beliveau. He's got it all. He plays amazing piano, he plays guitar solos on his organ, and he sings like an outcasted angel.

The piano in the music of Crash Kings isn't like anything you've ever heard. It's blunt. It's in your face. And most importantly, it's unpredictable. In their song "Mountain Man" there are random upper range chords that are played on random beats. The idea sounds chaotic, but the music sounds great. The lead singer even has different tones in his keyboard. He goes from electric piano to regular piano constantly. This variety really brings good music to the table.

The craziest thing about the lead singer's piano is his guitar tone. What? A guitar tone on a keyboard? You're probably thinking that guitar tones sound crappy on a keyboard. Not on this one. It sounds exactly like a guitar. There's no telling the difference. He even has a bar on the side of his keyboard that bends the pitch of each note depending on how much he pushes on it. Crazy. Different. Amazing.

The most important aspect of the music of Crash Kings is the lead singer's voice. It's so good! He hits notes higher on the scale than anyone we know. The Indie Team is in awe. Literally. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that some whiney bands have singers who hit high notes, and they sound really bad. The lead singer from Crash Kings is far from that. He has it all. He has volume. He has talent. And he has an amazing range.

Seriously. If you're not freaking out about this band yet, you need to listen to their music. And if you are freaking out...calm down and put those headphones in. It's time for some Crash Kings.

Linkin Park

We all remember Linkin Park as one of those bands who was overplayed on just about every radio station years and years ago. People got tired of the rap/rock music that changed the game of music. So a couple of years later, they came out with a single called "What I've Done," one of the more popular tunes in their career. Once again, this was another overplayed song on the radio which was forgotten by most music listeners. So they tried again with a song that sounded similar. "Across the New Divide" was their next single that shot up the music charts, but was unfortunately forgotten yet again. Why was Linkin Park always fed the short end of the stick? Because they were saving their massive hits for today. The future of music was given to us by Linkin Park in the form of their new album, "A Thousand Suns."

What happened? They had such a set style! It didn't seem like Linkin Park was ever going to change from their sound. Well they decided to give their songs variety by effecting their guitars, trying new weird melodies, and dropping even more sick beats, one of the great things that their good at.

Don't believe me? Go listen to them! One of their songs has grown to be one of the most popular indie songs in the business. "Waiting for the End," is a mixture of solid beats, empty verses, and crazy choruses. The cool thing is...it's so simple! The verse alone is just a drum beat with a synth tone. Another crazy thing is that the guitar solo is literally just two notes. What makes it good is that it's played over the hip hop drum beat while effected through a pedal. Years ago, Linkin Park was all about the essence of "hardcore." It seemed like that had the hardest vocals, and the hardest rap tracks. They even had some pretty intense guitar riffs. Basically they were doing their best to be a really hard rock band. Not anymore. Linkin Park has really stepped outside of their comfort zone with some of the new stuff that they released, and it's proving to be relentless in the music industry.

The Indie Team officially loves Linkin Park. We love their new style. We love their new tones. We love their new songwriting techniques. We might even be starting to obsess over them a little (just kidding). But in all seriousness, this is a band that you should take the time to listen to. Even if it is some of their older stuff. Go ahead! Go listen to the great sounds of Linkin Park.

Langly Interview

Langly is the new sound of Christian alternative rock. We, the Indie Team, find them to be a great mix of good tones and good messages. For this band, we really like the idea of the message that they're trying to send. We usually discuss the music behind bands on Indie Alternative Rock, but today we're going to focus on beliefs. We'll provide some links or videos so that you can listen to this great band. The cool thing we love about Langly is that they sing about the Christian religion, and serving God. We find they're music very serious, and very good at the same time and we also respect them a lot for what they do. Sometimes it can be really hard to play religious music for people. What if those people aren't religious? This could be an obstacle for picking up new fans, but Langly seems to get around it. But seriously, what do we know about Langly? Well to be honest we didn't know a lot until we asked them a few questions. Take a look....

Q: What is the sole purpose of your music?

I have to say that the sole purpose in our music is to target people that think Christians are just bible reading, church going, bible thumpers. We aim to show them that in our music that it's not always about straight up saying "I love you Jesus" in each and every song. We want to show people that our music is just as good as any secular bands music, but we try to bring a positive influence and songs that everyday people can compare to

Q: What are some pros and cons of being a Christian rock band?

When we chose to become a Christian band we knew it would come with its pros and cons. On the positive side, through the ministry that God has given us we have the opportunity to reach a diverse group of people. I feel that because of our age we have a larger influence on the teenage crowd, which is about the time where they are going through changes spiritually and mentally. So I'm thankful that we are able to kind of put our foot in the door and spread the seeds that God has given us to sow. I cant say there are any negatives more like challenges to overcome. Because we are a Christian band we have a reputation to uphold, not only our reputation but that of our Savior. We have to be extra careful of what we say, what we do, how we act etc. These challenges and opportunities have molded us into the band we are today!

Q: How would you describe your live show?

We've seen a lot of bands get on the stage, play there music, get off the stage and not say a word. For the people watching its kind of uncomfortable. So when we play we like to make the audience feel like they're a part of the family. Also at the start and end of every show we always invite the audience to come and hang out with us.

Q: What's it like working out of West Virginia?

Hard work always pays off! Keeps your eyes fixed on Christ and Christ alone!! Be thankful for what God has given you and remember who you are and where you came from! Don't let egos get in the way!
