Meise Botanic Garden

At any time of year, the Meise Botanic Garden is a picturesque treat. Whether you’re looking for moody, gray late-autumn landscapes or the most impeccable springtime cherry blossoms moment, you’ll find ample scope for capturing memories here.

Meise is home to more than 18,000 plants scattered throughout their multiple gardens, from the beautifully aromatic Fragrance and Colour Garden to their Orangerie and Medicinal Plants gardens.

Beyond being one of the most Instagrammable spots in Brussels, the Meise Botanic Garden is a valuable conservation resource and a fascinating place to learn more about a gratifyingly wide variety of plants and other aspects of the natural world.

Royal Saint Hubert Galleries

Some of the best natural light photography can take place at the Royal Saint Hubert Galleries, Europe’s first glass-topped shopping arcade.

An absolutely stunning feat of 19th-century architecture and design, the Galleries are absolutely one of the most beautiful photography spots in Brussels.

Aesthetics are a key word here, with shops making sure that under the antique glass ceiling, their window displays are impeccably turned out–any photo taken here will be beautiful.

Mini-Europe

For the ultimate in charming miniature installations, look no further than Mini-Europe. Tucked near the feet of the space-age Atomium sculpture, Mini-Europe is exactly what it sounds like: a collection of important European structures and monuments, at 1:25 scale.

You can take your photograph next to a reproduction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa that’s no taller than yourself, pretend you’re Godzilla by the Arc de Triomphe, and get eye-level with Brussels’ own Grote Markt. It’s a completely delightful place to visit, and definitely one of the best Instagram spots in Brussels.

St Michael and St Gudula Cathedral

Not only a dream location for lovers of church history and architecture, the Gothic cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is a stunning stop on anyone’s Brussels photography itinerary. On the outside, it’s an imposing stone edifice, fantastically carved and with a beautiful ogival window as the centerpiece.

Inside, the 17th-century Brabantine Gothic nave arches gracefully overhead, grabbing your attention for a long moment of awed silence as you realize just how enormous it is, how significant an undertaking it must have been for the builders.

Stunning stained glass windows line the walls, while exquisitely detailed stone and wood carvings stand sentry at intervals throughout the nave. And then there are the organs–while of modern provenance, both were designed to fit harmoniously into their surroundings, capping off the interior design of the cathedral perfectly.

Your only trouble with photographing the cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is going to be deciding where to point your lens first.

Royal Palace of Brussels

While not a royal residence–the King and Queen of the Belgians officially reside in the Royal Palace of Laeken–the Royal Palace of Brussels is still an important location for the monarchy’s work, being where state visits and audiences are held, among other uses.

It’s also an incredible historic monument in the city, with the origin of the current structure dating back to the early 19th-century.

With such importance and history behind it, the palace is of course an impressive and often-photographed structure, stretching across a full two city blocks in Brussels.

However, it’s the beautifully restored and curated interior that is truly Instagram-worthy; the vast marble Grand Staircase alone will get your shooting fingers moving as soon as you walk through the palace doors. But time your visit carefully, as the palace is only open to the public during the summer.

Parc du Cinquantenaire

To celebrate 50 years of independence, Belgium created the Parc du Cinquantenaire, a long oasis of tranquility in the middle of the capital city.

Anchored at the south end by the massive Arcade du Cinquantenaire–in itself an incredible Brussels Instagram spot–the park is a spare, pleasingly minimalist greenspace, with neatly manicured lawns and hedges. 

The Arcade is also home to several museums, including an army museum; from this museum, brave visitors can ascend to the top of the Arcade and marvel at the unbelievable views of the European Quarter spread out below.

Atomium

Built for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, the Atomium is a supremely cool Space Age era monument to science and progress.

Originally, it wasn’t meant to last past the Fair, but it was so popular and affectionately regarded that eventually, demolition plans were shelved and today the Atomium still stands in all its gleaming majesty (102 meters, to be precise), an enduring icon and one of the most Instagrammable spots in all of Brussels. 

Like the Arcade at the Parc du Cinquantenaire, the Atomium can offer absolutely spectacular views of the city if you ascend to its highest point, the sphere at the very top of the structure. It’s said that on the clearest days, you can see up to 40 kilometers north, where the port city of Antwerp lies. 

The Atomium is even fantastic at night, when thousands of LEDs illuminate all nine spheres and turn it into a massive twinkling star.

Manneken Pis

Another enduring icon of Brussels is Manneken Pis, the fountain statue of the little fellow having a cheeky al fresco wee.

While the original Mannekin Pis is ensconced in the Brussels City Museum after centuries of kidnappings, its replica at the corner of Stoofstraat and Eikstraat (Rue de L’Etuve and Rue de Chêne) still stands and may be the most photographed object in Brussels, if not in Belgium as a whole.

Seen as a symbol of Belgian joy and self-deprecation, Mannekin Pis is often decked out in one of his thousand and more fancy dress outfits, with styles from sports kits and vocational uniforms to elaborate period clothing and holiday-specific garb.

There’s even a Garderobe Mannekin Pis, where visitors can view a selection of the statue’s vast wardrobe. 

Brussels Park

Across from the Royal Palace, Brussels Park (Parc de Bruxelles) was once home to a magnificent palace and a beautiful park.

While the palace and grounds were destroyed in a fire in 1731, it wasn’t until 1775 that plans to build a large park for the public got underway. The new park was laid out in a neoclassical style, with angular pathways, a pair of lovely water features, and elaborate railings.

Today, these storied grounds–so much has happened here!–are dotted with whimsical sculptures and elegant benches.

And live entertainment is very popular here: there’s a lovely cast-iron bandstand where outdoor concerts are often held, a large theater and concert venue in the Royal Park Theater, and the Radio Kiosk Bar, where visitors can enjoy a cocktail and perhaps spin about to a few tunes on a warm summer evening. With all the possibilities, this is a great photo spot in Brussels.

Grand Place

At the heart of Brussels is the Grand Place, or Grote Markt. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned as one of the most beautiful market squares in Europe. It is an area with great history in every stone, brick, and cobble. 

It’s also well-known as possibly the most photographed region of the city, and with good reason. Here, you’ll find the fabulously ornate Maison des Ducs de Brabant, once a collection of guild houses behind one grand façade.

The picturesque and very Gothic Maison de Roi is here as well, home to the Brussels City Museum where the original Mannekin Pis statue resides. The square is genuinely one of the great photography spots of Brussels.

The anchor of the square of course is the 15th-century Town Hall, with its elegant spire piercing the Brussels skyline.

Adorned with numerous carvings of Belgian nobility, beautiful ancient windows, and truly fantastic gargoyles, the Town Hall is the oldest building on the square, the only remaining medieval structure, and it’s absolutely worth your photography time.

Waffle Factory and VeganWaf

You’re in Brussels, of course you’re going to get a Brussels waffle. How could you not? The trick is to find the perfect one–it’s beautiful and delicious. It’s got to make your ‘Gram grid, right? But also be a mouthwatering delight.

You’ll be gazing across one of the most impeccably, intricately manicured and beautiful gardens in Brussels, with a clear view all the way to the Grand Place–it doesn’t get more breathtaking than that.

Halle Gate

In the 14th century, Brussels was one of Europe’s many walled cities. Halle Gate was one of the seven access points into the city, and today, it is the only one that remains.

Remodeled in the 19th century to resemble a small castle, it does look more like the idea of something that existed in the Middle Ages than something that actually did, but it’s still a great spot for Instagram photos in Brussels.

Halle Gate retains a portcullis and drawbridge over what remains of its moat, and is surrounded by a beautiful little park, perfect for that fluffy-dress Instagram shot. For high-flyers who love aerial photos, visitors are able to climb to the top of the ramparts to admire the surrounding view.

Streets in Vienna

Graben

The foundations for Graben Street were laid way back in Roman times. There was once a trench where the street now lies, but in the 12th century, Austrian knights formulated a scheme to get the money that would pay to fill it.

They kidnapped King Richard the Lionheart and demanded a ransom.

With the king returned and money in pocket, they filled the trench that would become one of the most famous streets in Vienna.

Full of shops, restaurants, and some iconic Vienna sights, the Graben is a hub for history lovers, foodies, and shopaholics alike.

Ringstrasse

The Ringstrasse is one of those streets in Vienna that you hear about whenever anyone returns from a trip to the city.

It seems that every time you pass one beautiful building on this street, another one, probably in a different, but equally incredible style, pops up to take its place.

On the 3.9 miles worth of Ringstrasse, you’ll encounter the State Opera, the Parliament, City Hall, the Burgtheater, and museums galore.

Set out on foot or rent a bike and see what surprises await you on this cool street in Vienna. Or, if surprises aren’t your thing, you can prepare yourself and listen to a guided tour to get all the historical context for these places.

The Golden Quarter

If you’re looking for the best shopping streets in Vienna, the Golden Quarter is where you can find all the most luxurious shops and restaurants.

Prada, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Emporio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen, and more have storefronts here. Leiderleitner Home has exquisite home decor.

It is located near all the best Viennese attractions. Just minutes from the Hofburg and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Landstraßer Hauptstraße

This street is likely one of the first you’ll see when arriving in Vienna.

If you’re taking the shuttle from the airport, the Wien-Mitte Station is the first stop, located right at the top of Landstraßer Hauptstraße.

There are also a few prominent subway stations along the street, making it a perfect place to create one of the best shopping streets in Vienna. It accommodates all those coming in or out of the city.

Whether you go north or south on the street, you won’t run out of things to do or see.

Altgasse

Altgasse is close to two of Vienna’s most important attractions: Schönbrunn Palace and Tiergarten.

Tiergarten doubles as the oldest zoo in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can walk Altgasse marveling at the architecture of pastel yellow and orange buildings and walls, similar to the nearby palace.

You can also savor Vienna’s coffee culture with the various cafes scattered along the street, or enjoy the old city in its antique shops and traditional pubs.

Favoritenstraße

Named after one of the Habsburgs’ summer residences, the Favoritenstraße has been one of the most famous streets in Vienna since the royal family lived on it.

It is also one of the longest streets in the city. After over 3 and a half miles, the building numbers cap off at 262.

The Habsburgs’ Favorita has now become the Theresianum school and the Diplomatic Academy and it still holds fabulous parties, just like it did when the Habsburgs lived there.

It’s one of those cool streets in Vienna that you’ll be snapping pictures off the entire 3 and a half miles.

Spittelberg

To escape the busyness of the tourist-filled attractions, you need to visit one of the most beautiful streets in Vienna: Spittelberg.

Now, just because it’s not so touristy doesn’t mean Spittelberg isn’t lively. It is full of some of the best restaurants and pubs in Vienna.

Its slower pace comes from the atmosphere. Tranquil gardens and courtyards can be found in the area, perfect for an afternoon stroll or a romantic night out.

During the holiday season, Spittelberg’s already visible magic triples. A Christmas market turns the street red and green and gold. 

Join the locals in grabbing a cup of mulled wine from one of the stands to warm up at this time of year.

Herrengasse

Herrengasse is one of the oldest streets in Vienna, recorded as being mentioned for the first time back in Roman times.

Over the centuries, it has been a hub for political and creative movements. It houses the Palais Niederösterreich which has an extensive history in both those regards, as well as being a place you’ll want to take a few pictures of.

Not to mention, some of the classical legends, Liszt, Mozart, and Beethoven, performed here.

From Herrengasse, you can easily access the Hofburg and the Rathausplatz. It also has a prominent subway station, Cafe Central, and more.

Rotenturmstraße

Leading right up to the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Rotenturmstraße is a street where you will find both historical sights and modern-day luxuries.

Being one of Vienna’s most visited areas, a flourishing shopping area has bloomed here. It’s a great place to easily kill a couple of hours and maybe get a souvenir or two.

You can also find all kinds of different cuisine on this street, ranging from Indian to Italian.

Kärntner Strasse

Called the Strata Carinthianorum in Roman times, this is another one of those streets in Vienna that has survived to tell the tale of thousands of years.

Since many of the notable buildings in the city were destroyed during World War II, Kärntner Strasse was rebuilt in the 20th century to become a hub of culture and activity, showing resilience in the face of such tragedy.

It is now only used for pedestrians, giving those walking the city a direct line from the beautiful Karlspaltz to St. Stephen’s.

For fans of Mozart, Kärntner Strasse is the place to go for souvenirs. In 1791, the famed composer passed away in a building that has now become the department store, Steffl.

Mariahilferstraße

Located to the left of the city center, Mariahilferstraße runs horizontally, covering a distance of over 2 miles.

The street is cut into two sections, each equal in length, divided by the Europaplatz and the Westbahnhof.

The Inner Mariahilfer Strasse runs from the Museumplatz to the Mariahilfer Gürtel. It is very connected to the city center and is where you will find most of the restaurants and shops on the street.

The other side, Outer Mariahilfer Strasse, also has some notable attractions, such as the Technology Museum and Auer-Welsbach-Park. There are fewer brand-name stores here, but it is one of the best places to find some really unique local ones.

KohlMarkt

KohlMarkt is not one of those streets in Vienna you shouldn’t frequent if you’re on a budget, but for those looking to drop a pretty penny on the highest quality Viennese products, then this is the place.

Nicknamed the “Golden U,” KohlMarkt is the most prestigious of the shopping streets in Vienna. The Golden Market mentioned above is an extension of this street.

It was once the street that housed the stores of court-appointed jewelers, who are now replaced by the luxurious names known around the world, such as Cartier, Tiffany, and Bulgari.

There are also quite a few local stores that are able to contend with their international counterparts. Stores like Wagner and Bucherer have long held this high-end reputation in Austria.

Wollzeile

Wollzeile is a one-stop shop for a couple of hours in Vienna.

Connecting the Stubentor subway station to the Rotenturmstraße, the central location is ideal for branching out and visiting other attractions that are nearby.

On the actual street, there are adorable authentic shops and traditional restaurants, including the renowned Plachutta and Figlmüller Wollzeile, which has some of the best Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna.

Other storefronts include a honey and truffle shop, a toy store, a bakery, a coffee shop, leather work, and fashion for both men and women.

Final Thoughts: Cool Streets in Vienna

If you don’t know much about Vienna before you visit, it will surprise you. 

If you do know much about it, you’ll probably still be surprised. I certainly was.

From the streets in Vienna to the food, you won’t be expecting to love it as much as you are bound to.

It’s a destination for any time and any season. You won’t be disappointed after spending some time in these Viennese streets.

There is evidence of civilization in Vienna dating back to 25,000 BCE during the Neolithic period. With that much history, you can only imagine what there is to see. Over time, the citizens have used it to create one of the most picturesque cities on the earth.

I was lucky enough to visit and spend some time in Vienna while I was studying abroad in Ireland. Of course, I was on the hunt for some best views!

The best views of Vienna contain the rooftop gardens of cream-colored neoclassical buildings and the spires of museums, cathedrals, and palaces. Below is a list of where you can find them.

Best Views of Vienna

St Stephen’s Cathedral

St Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the most incredible Vienna attractions. Lucky for us, it also has some of the best views of the city.

The central nave of the cathedral is free to visitors, but for a spectacular view, you’re going to want to summit the South Tower, which requires an additional ticket.

Since the cathedral was built during medieval times, the builders didn’t think to include elevators. Instead, a 343-step staircase winds up the tower to take visitors to the observation deck, which was in service from the 1400s to the 1900s.

The climb is long, but it is worth it to see the views of Vienna expand all around you. The view from here is one of my favorite views in all of Europe.

Kaerntner Strasse 

Maybe heights are your thing, but you still want to see some incredible Vienna viewpoints. Kaerntner Strasse is one of those places.

Made for pedestrians, the busy walkway is full of picturesque storefronts and signs framed by the most striking of Vienna’s buildings.

Grab a window seat in a cafe and take in the view with a warm cup of coffee and some delicious Austrian cake. 

Gloriette 

The Gloriette is an addition to the already incredible Schönbrunn Palace. It was included in the original design of the palace and its grounds but was not actually built until Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg remodeled it. 

It is a breathtaking structure, with a central hall that was once used for dining and two arcaded wings with fairytale-like arches. The sunset from here is beautiful.

It has been altered a few times over the years, the most recent remodeling being done in 1994-95. The central section was reglazed at this time.

Now, you can find Cafe Gloriette in the central hall. This structure has a secure spot in our list of best views in Vienna.

Riesenrad Ferris Wheel

If you’ve ever wondered, “Is Vienna a beautiful city?” then take a ride on the Riesenread Ferris Wheel. You’ll never question it again.

Located near the center of the city, the Ferris Wheel takes you high above all the surrounding buildings. You can see the spires of multiple churches as well as skyscrapers on the skyline, showing both the new and old in Vienna.

You can even rent out one of the cars and hold an event inside.

It’s an unforgettable rotation over the famous amusement park and one of the best ways to see the views of Vienna.

Danube Tower

In a city full of 18th-century and older buildings and architecture, the Danube Tower sticks out with shining 60s glory.

Built in 1964, the Danube Tower still holds the title of the tallest building in Austria. It overlooks Danube Park, which was transformed from empty, neglected land into a lively park at the same time the tower was built.

Not only does it have the best Vienna viewpoints, but it is also a hub for all kinds of activities and events. There are three gastronomic experiences: one on the ground floor, the tower cafe at 160 meters, and the rotating Turm Restaurant at 170 meters.

The Danube Tower also keeps the hopes of its visitors as high as the towers, resulting in an average of 6 marriage proposals per week.

Kahlenberg

Kahlenberg has views of Vienna that are consistently enjoyed by locals as well as tourists.

The mountain has been a staple in Austrian history, first given as a gift to the Camaldolese Order by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1628.

It was also one of the final hurdles the Polish King Sobiesky had to jump before freeing Vienna from Turkish occupation.

Now, it is a popular hiking destination. Following the City Hiking Trail 1a, adventurers will see not only incredible Vienna viewpoints but also views of the Danube, Leopoldsberg, where a castle still stands, and more.

Those who aren’t a fan of hiking but still want to experience the Kahlenberg can take a bus to the top.

Prater Turm

The Prater Turm not only has some of the best views in Vienna but also has one of the best sources of adrenaline in the city.

This carousel ride is not like the ones you see at fairs with kids riding on brightly painted horses. Prater Turm spins thrill seekers over the city of Vienna at almost 400 feet in the air.

Going over 35 miles an hour, the ride revolves, sending its riders out in a radius of 118 feet. 

The view is dizzying, probably both from the beauty and the spinning. It is especially notable at sunset.

The ticket is 5 euros per ride, and you must be over seven years old.

360° Ocean Sky

Looking for dinner and views of Vienna?

Look no further than 360° Ocean Sky, situated on top of the famous Haus des Meeres.

You’ll take the panoramic elevator straight up to the 11th floor, where you can enjoy a unique drink from the 360° Ocean Sky bar to start your meal.

The menu is full of delicious, modern, and classic dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a side of the Viennese cityscape.

The restaurant also has an immersive outdoor terrace that you will definitely want to take advantage of. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic night out.

Nussberg

Just outside of the city, on sloping green hills, the vineyards of Nussberg grow.

This is an enchanting spot for any lover of wine, nature, or Vienna. Here, you can get the best of all three.

At one time, Nussberg was even nicknamed “wine mountain.” If that doesn’t tell you all you need to know about it, I’m not sure what will.

Climb into the higher altitude for an escape from the bustle of the city, a relaxing glass of wine, and a view that extends in every direction, showing off mountains, rivers, and architecture.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is a place that has made history itself. Its collection was started and put together by the Habsburgs and still brings visitors to its doors today.

Inside, you can see dinosaur bones, the oldest and largest collection of minerals in the world, and the famous “Venus von Willendorf,” a sculpture from the Stone Age.

If you book a tour with the museum, you will not only be able to see each one of their fabulous exhibits, but they will also take you up to the top of the building to get a Vienna rooftop view.

The Natural History Museum looks out over the Ringstrasse and the Old City.

Haus des Meeres

Haus de Meeres is a view in Vienna in and of itself. The Aqua Terra Zoo is a jungle clothed in an anti-aircraft tower from World War II.

Now, it is home to over 10,000 animals, ranging from the fiercest sea creatures (sharks, rays, and more) to the tiniest of land animals (insects, lizards, and birds). Even monkeys!

It’s a zoological experience I can guarantee you’ve never had before. You can also enjoy views of Vienna from the restaurant at the top of the Haus des Meeres, the 360° Ocean Sky.

Das LOFT

DAS Loft has views of Vienna and a menu that is unforgettable. You can dine here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner beside a Viennese sky and beneath a ceiling reminiscent of an art installation.

To ensure you get a table window side, you need to make a reservation in advance. If you’re okay with the view from the bar and are just looking for snacks and some one-of-a-kind drinks, then no reservation is needed.

Whatever option you choose, an experience at DAS Loft is always one of luxury.

Leopoldsberg

Leopoldsberg is one of the highest hills in Vienna, peaking at almost 1400 feet. It’s a long climb to the top, with a list of historical events associated with it that may be just as long.

The ruins of Leopold IV’s first castle still stand, built around 1130 CE, but there is evidence that there had once been a Roman structure there at one time. Over the centuries, it has been a place of war, prosperity, and religion.

Today, a small baroque church stands on the hill against the backdrop of a city. It is one of those Vienna viewpoints you need to see.

Final Thoughts: Best Vienna Viewpoints

The views of Vienna aren’t just beautiful. They are saturated in rich cultural and historical contexts that make seeing them all the more enjoyable.

Restaurant Wiener

A dinner-only location, Restaurant Wiener has been serving guests a decadent evening meal for 40+ years. You can find this upscale location in between Vienna’s historical center and one of the main train stations, an area saturated with hotels.

The classic but modern decor has attracted some of the biggest names from the Austrian art scene for years, making it an ideal date night location.

Start with a soup or one of their delicious starters before digging into their classic Viennese Schnitzel. It will be a meal you’ll be thinking about for days afterward.

Plachuttas Gasthaus zur Oper

The Gasthaus zur Oper has cultivated a menu of both Viennese classics and modern cuisine, but the most notable is, of course, their Wiener schnitzel. It won Audience’s Choice in 2022 for best original Wiener schnitzel in the city.

If you loved it enough to try making it at home, you can find the restaurant’s recipe on their website.

During the summer months, you can be served your meal at a table outside beneath an awning where each element matches the calming green and white color scheme of the restaurant. The inside is just as charming, with decor to match their mission of mixing the old and the new.

The Figlmüller’s have made the claim that their restaurant gave life to the famous Wiener schnitzel interpretation and their recipe does not disappoint. Served alongside their homemade wine, a meal at Figlmüller at Wollzeile is Viennese through and through.

Puerstner

Puerstner is one of the best traditional restaurants in Vienna. It was converted from a classic Viennese house into a restaurant years ago, but it still maintains the cozy charm of a home.

While following your waiter to find your seat, you may pass through or be seated in the Taproom, the Knitting Room, the Card Room, the Caskroom, and the Bower Room. Each room retains turn-of-the-century charm with original art, furniture, and decor.

From April to September, the garden seating outside the restaurant is open as well.

Restaurant Meissl & Schadn Wien

Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer is a restaurant deeply entrenched in Vienna’s history. Not only is it one of the oldest restaurants in the city, but it was also the first restaurant to be owned by Franz Sacher.

That name may not mean anything to you right now, but after you try the famous Viennese cake, the Sachertorte, it will. After you try the restaurant’s Wiener Schnitzel, you can finish off your meal with a deliciously simple piece of chocolate cake brought to the next level with a layer of apricot filling.

And the history of the place doesn’t stop there. ‘Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer’ translates to a phrase having to do with a white chimney sweep. 

Normally, chimney sweeps emerge from a day of work covered in soot, but this particular one spent a lot of time in the bakery of the girl he sought after, coming out dusted white with flour instead of soot. 

He could often be spotted drinking in the tavern next door, which came to be known as ‘Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer.’

To be able to see all of Barcelona’s heavy hitters, you’ll need at least 3 days in the city. This will give you time to engage with some of the city’s rich history, go to a museum or two, and grab a few souvenirs from your favorite little shop you stumbled into.

Due to the large area Barcelona covers, you’ll need to account for travel time between sights and stopping to try the delicious Spanish cuisine.

How Many Days in Barcelona: What can you actually cover?

1 Day in Barcelona

One day in Barcelona isn’t nearly enough time, but if it’s all you have, then it will have to do! You’ll want to get the city’s most famous sights out of the way and make sure to try a tapa or two.

To appreciate Barcelona’s unique architecture and history, you have to know about Antoni Gaudí.

He became a household name when he was very young after being appointed the architect of La Sagrada Familia. His touch lingers on many different buildings and neighborhoods in the city.

1 day in Barcelona should include:

• A tour of La Sagrada Familia
• Grabbing lunch at Madre Taberna Moderna (2 minutes away from La Sagrada Familia)
• Heading up to Park Guell to enjoy beautiful Barcelonian scenery and the touch of Gaudí

2 Days in Barcelona

With two days in Barcelona, you have a little bit more flexibility, but the essentials will always be the essentials. With an extra day, you can further spend more time at La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell while adding a few more things to the list.

Having a second day here will allow you to do some shopping, try even more Spanish delicacies, and revel in the vibrancy that lines every street in Barcelona, especially La Rambla.

2 days in Barcelona should include:

• Walking the famous La Rambla
• Stop at the La Boqueria Market
• Getting a cup of coffee at the historic Cafè de l’Òpera
• Marvel at the works of the famous Spanish Artist in the Picasso Museum

3 Days in Barcelona

Is three days in Barcelona enough? It can be if you follow this itinerary. Remember to include everything I mentioned in both the earlier sections.

Barcelona is not only a city of fantastic architecture and man-made beauty, but its landscape is stunning as well. A city set upon hills by the sea, there are plenty of lookout points, hikes, and views you can enjoy with a little more time.

3 Days in Barcelona should include:

• Exploring the Gothic Quarter
• Seeing more of Gaudí’s work at Casa Batlló and Casa Milà
• Visiting Casa Amatller and trying a chocolate or two
• Reveling at the Barcelona Cathedral
• Trying the Spanish-Mediterranean cuisine at Ziryab Fusion Tapas Bar
• Looking out over the city at Bunkers del Carmel
• Enjoying a drink at sunset at a rooftop bar, like Alaire Terrace
• Taking your pick of museums on Montjuic Hill

4 Days in Barcelona

Four is nearing how many days in Barcelona you need to have a good picture of what this city has to offer. All the activities listed in the above sections can easily fit into our 4-day itinerary.

If you feel like you’ve gotten a feel for Barcelona in 3 days and want to see a little more of Spain, consider taking a day trip to the countryside.

• Trying the local classic, Pinchos, in Poble Sec Barrio
• Heading to the Palau Nacional to witness the magical fountain show
• Riding the cable car to Montjuic Castle
• Spending a few hours relaxing on the sand at Playa Barceloneta, Marabella, or San Sebastian
• Strolling around the Arc de Triomf and Ciutadella Park
• Riding a few of the attractions at Tibidabo while enjoying the view
• Taking a day trip to the Monastery of Montserrat

5+ Days in Barcelona (Extended Trip)

Deciding how many days in Barcelona you’ll need is much easier when you have a lot to work with. With 5+ days in Barcelona, you can fit in everything from days 1-4, as well as a day trip or two. 

Depending on how long your trip is, you will likely still have to pick and choose, because, as we’ve mentioned, this city has a wonderful abundance of things to do, but this will be your best chance to experience Barcelona like a local.

5+ Days in Barcelona should include:

• Spending time seeing more spots in the city, like Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and the bridge over Carrer del Bisbe
• Visiting the Roman Ruins in the Barcelona History Museum
• Ordering a Crema Catalana at Escriba to watch them make the creme brulee before your eyes
• Seeing the city from the seaboard with a ride on the Golondrinas
• Booking a flamenco show at Palau de la Musica Catalana
• Appreciating a national treasure by visiting FC Barcelona Stadium
• Taking another day to visit the enchanting medieval town of Girona

Final Thoughts: How many days in Barcelona do you need?

Deciding how many days in Barcelona is tricky because you’ll likely want to spend more days in the city than you actually have available.

Don’t worry, this is normal. It’s an incredible city with so much life, culture, and history. Any amount of time you spend here will be time well spent.

Howth Cliff Walk

Just outside of Dublin, lining the edge of the teardrop-shaped spit of land that is Howth, are the Howth Cliffs. With majestic views of the Irish Sea and that good bracing seaside air, a walk along these cliffs is exactly what the doctor ordered.

There are several cliff walks to suit all levels of capability, and Howth itself is easily accessed via Dublin Area Rapid Transit (or, DART for short).

You can spend a lovely afternoon strolling the cliffs, dining al fresco on a picnic lunch, and enjoying some of the most incredible sea views in Ireland.

Killiney Hill

Head south past Dalkey, and you’ll find Killiney Hill, festooned with beautiful yellow gorse bushes and topped with an 18th-century obelisk. From the top of the hill, you can enjoy one of Dublin’s best views, an epic, sweeping overlook of the Dalkey coastline.

On your leisurely walk back down, any direction can take you to treasures like the Killiney Hill Tea Rooms, the Pyramid of Dalkey, or even the Vico Bathing Place. 

Guinness Storehouse Gravity Bar

The Guinness Storehouse is, of course, a must-see destination for any Dublin visitor. This is where you can get a pint of the black stuff straight from the source and learn about the brewing process in its original home.

But did you know that the top of the storehouse–designed to abstractly resemble Guinness pint glasses–is where you can take in some of Dublin’s best views?

Head up 46 meters over the city to the Gravity Bar for breathtaking 360-degree views of the Dublin cityscape, and maybe even indulge in a pint with your face printed into the foam while you admire Dublin sprawling out at your feet.

Talbot Memorial Bridge

A sleek, low-profile span across the River Liffey that links Dublin’s Custom House to the City Quay, the Talbot Memorial Bridge is an interesting divide between Dublin’s old and new.

On one side, regard the neoclassical Custom House, Dublin’s most iconic landmark. Turn to the other side to take in the buildings of modern Dublin in all their glass and metal glory.

The Talbot Memorial Bridge is the best place to really see the evolution of the city, making it a fantastic Dublin viewpoint.

Howth Pier

While you’re in Howth for a cliff walk, don’t forget also to visit the Howth Pier.

This is where you can get a beautiful view of Howth Village that’s good enough to put on a postcard, and if you’re lucky, you’ll also get to see some of the seals that visit the area! It’s one of the Dublin area’s best views on a sunny day.

The Marker Rooftop Bar

The iconic checkerboard façade of The Marker Hotel, as it overlooks the Grand Canal, is itself a spectacular view to behold.

But be sure to go inside and head up to the Rooftop Bar for excellent craft cocktails and to experience a Dublin viewpoint that will leave you speechless. Especially beautiful on a clear summer day, this is one view in Dublin that you won’t soon forget. 

Tip: the hotel specifically recommends a sunset-to-evening experience.

Dun Laoghaire Pier

The lovely coastal suburb of Dún Laoghaire, formerly Dunleary, then Kingstown, and now Dún Laoghaire since 1920, is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

There are pretty little parks and public gardens dotted here and there, and the Dún Laoghaire Pier is a wonderful locale for views of Dublin Bay.

Literature fans will want to wander down to nearby Sandycove and the Forty Foot bathing area; the Martello tower where James Joyce once stayed and wrote into the opening of his novel Ulysses is here, now the James Joyce Tower and Museum.

Great South Wall + Poolbeg Lighthouse

Once the world’s longest seawall, the Great South Wall overlooks Dublin Bay, where the mouth of the River Liffey gives way to Ireland’s largest seaport.

Walk the weathered stone pathway of the wall all the way out to the tip, where the lipstick-red Poolbeg Lighthouse stands steward over the boat traffic in and out of the bay.

There are several walks you can take to get to the Wall and down to the lighthouse, at the end of which you’ll be rewarded with expansive sea views and the chance to wave to ferry passengers as they pass close by.

Temple Bar

Dublin’s most iconic neighborhood is, of course, the lively Temple Bar area, where the city’s cultural heartbeats. Here, you’ll find colorful and picturesque shops, pubs, and little foodie haunts.

It’s also home to a number of important media institutions, such as the Irish Film Institute, the National Photographic Archive, and The Gaiety Theater, where Ireland’s beloved Riverdance troupe holds shows every summer.

Visit Dublin has a list of Temple Bar’s best activities and viewpoints here. The entire neighborhood is the colorful, bustling place to be, night and day.

Ticknock

Dublin, of course, isn’t only known for pubs and sea views. Those who love a good, challenging hike will enjoy a day out in Ticknock, where ten kilometers of trails offer prime opportunities for a good bracing walk.

The most popular, the Fairy Castle Loop, offers some of the most beautiful views of Dublin’s mountains and the city itself sprawled out at their feet.

Ha’penny Bridge

Once upon a time, the Liffey Bridge cost half a cent for pedestrians to cross. Don’t worry, though; it’s been over a century since anyone had to fumble in their pockets for a half-penny piece.

Still, the legacy persists, as the toll gave the bridge its unofficial name of Ha’penny Bridge.

Built in 1816, this pedestrian-only bridge is very popular, and it’s truly a sight to behold at night when an array of lights illuminates the structure against the dark waters of the Liffey.

If you’re looking for one of Dublin’s best views, you’ll certainly need to see Ha’penny Bridge.

St Stephen’s Green

University College Dublin once called St. Stephen’s Green home, and while the school has now moved, the Green remains as Dublin’s largest Georgian garden park.

Here, wanderers will enjoy winding paths, lovely greenery, and monuments to Irish icons such as the philanthropist Countess Constance Markiewicz, poet William Butler Yeats, and Lord Arthur Guinness, 1st Baron Ardilaun, the man who created St. Stephen’s Green and gave it to the city for public use–pause at his statue to thank him for one of the most beautiful views in Ireland.

Trinity College Garden

The Botanical Gardens at Trinity College are a marvelous urban expanse of conservation and research, a perfect oasis of greenspace in the busy city.

The only dedicated university botanic garden in the country, it is home to a number of legendary plants–over 4,000 living specimens!–and, crucially, the Irish Threatened Plant Seedbank.

There is a wealth of knowledge to explore on these beautiful grounds and even a specially curated interactive Sensory Trail invites visitors to pause and more deeply experience certain portions of the gardens. 

Montpelier Hill

For a truly rustic, gritty Dublin viewpoint, head up Montpelier Hill–perhaps better known by the rather unsettling moniker of the Hellfire Club, after the abandoned hunting lodge at the hill’s top.

Those with a bent for the supernatural might get a kick out of ascending the hill at night to (carefully!) explore the 300-year-old ruins and see if they can catch sight of any ghostly inhabitants.

But during the daytime, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping views of Dublin city.

Dublin is a city with a deep history and a rich culture, so it’s only natural that you’d be able to find a number of beautiful places to feast your eyes upon.

With a staggering 26 floors of office space, 3 floors of restaurants with cuisine from all over the world, 19 floors of the top-rated Shangri-La Hotel, 13 floors of living spaces, and the city’s highest viewing gallery, the Shard is truly a modern architectural wonder and a staple on London’s map.

Called the Vertical City, from the beginning, the Shard has aimed to be a one-stop shop and is the tallest building in Western Europe.

Doge’s Palace, Venice, Italy

The Doge’s Palace is one of the most unique historical buildings in Europe. It was the home of the Venetian Doge, the elected ruler of Venice for over 1,000 years.

Upon entering the building, you’ll marvel at the palace’s courtyard and the colorful peaks of Saint Mark’s Basilica.

Follow the signs to learn about the history of the Venetian Doge and witness where he lived and worked, as well as where Venetian prisoners were kept and government meetings held.

There is even an armory where you can see what weapons would’ve been carried by soldiers at that time.

La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain

La Sagrada Familia is the largest unfinished Catholic Basilica in the world. Nearing 150 years of construction, La Sagrada Familia is still being worked on, with the newest addition completed in 2021.

The first stones of this jaw-dropping edifice were laid in 1882, and while most people tend to focus on the outside of the building, the inside is just as marvelous.

Stained glass windows shade the sun’s harsh light, creating an atmospheric scene of colored rays lighting the columns and facades and the crypt. The eclectic design drawn up by Antoni Gaudi is not likely to be forgotten.

The ticket to enter is more expensive than most basilicas, but it is worth the splurge to see this masterpiece.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna, Austria

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is over 400 feet tall, making it the tallest church in Austria. Seated at the heart of the city, it has become a symbol of Vienna.

First built in 1147, the Cathedral has almost 1000 years of history and is the final resting palace for many of Vienna’s most important figures. You can visit each of their tombs, climb up 343 steps to the Cathedral’s highest tower, or descend beneath the marble floors into the catacombs.

The singularity of its architecture, characterized by many patterns and icons, is one of the things that makes it one of the most famous places in Europe to visit. 

Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen, Germany

Built by King Ludwig II in the 1800s to escape from the prying eyes of the public, Neuschwanstein Castle opened to the public just weeks after his death. His sanctuary became a worldwide destination, and to this day, visitors from all over flock to see the grandiose, yet serene, castle.

The epitome of a castle on a hill, Neuschwanstein sits high above the ground, surrounded by lush green forests or white blankets of snow, depending on the time of year. The walls are adorned with images of medieval legends, each having specific symbolism to the king.

Step into this castle and step back in time. It is one of the most visited famous buildings in Europe.

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa, Italy

Although originally designed to be vertically upright, the Leaning Tower of Pisa began to lean during construction. This should be no surprise because although construction began in 1173, the tower was not finished until 200 years later. 

The tower is simply a bell tower, or campanile, to the stunning Roman-style cathedral next to it. The entire cathedral complex is a wonder of old-world architecture, certainly worth taking a picture or two of.

Despite the accidental cause of its fame, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is still one of the most incredible buildings in Europe.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, Paris, France

Notre-Dame is one of the most famous buildings in Europe. It has a long history as the pinnacle of Christian worship in Paris for centuries, but it is enjoyed by people from all walks of life, marveling at the masterful Gothic architecture.

This cathedral was built over 200 years and each facade, door, and pillar has some meaning to it. Due to a fire that damaged Notre-Dame in 2019, visitors have not been allowed in, but they are slowly reopening parts of the cathedral. It should be fully functional in 2024.

Whether you see the inside or the outside of this precious edifice of history, it will be an experience you never forget.

Alhambra, Granada, Spain

Derived from Arabic, the word Alhambra means ‘red castle.’ Located in the hills of Granada, the reddish walls of the Alhambra welcome visitors to witness its grandeur and beauty.

The fortress was first mentioned in history in the 9th century, but the Alhambra we see today is from construction in the 14th, where the Alcazaba, palaces, Patio of the Lions, the Justice Gate, and more were added and renovated.

Walking the halls of the Alhambra is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a chance to witness one of the greatest things humanity has created.

Pantheon, Rome, Italy

The Pantheon is one of the oldest famous architecture we have on this list, making it all the more impressive. Built by Agrippa in 25 BCE and renovated by Hadrian one hundred years later, it is the only ancient Roman building that has retained almost all its shape throughout history.

Originally built as a house of worship to the 12 Gods, it was eventually converted to a Christian house of worship and renamed Saint Maria ad Martyres. It is still used at a Christian church where regular services are held.

The majesty of the Pantheon has never gone unnoticed. It was a great inspiration to the Renaissance architect, Raphael, and ultimately became his final resting place.

Parthenon, Athens, Greece

Even older than the Roman Pantheon, the Greek Parthenon has been a famous landmark in Europe since 438 BCE.

Built to honor Athen’s patron goddess, Athena, the Parthenon sits atop the Acropolis. It was the highest point in the city that now spills out in every direction around it.

The hike up to the top is a bit of a climb, but worth the view. Not only will you be able to visit the Parthenon, but the Acropolis is also home to the Erechtheion, Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and Dionysus Theatre.

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Compared to some of the other famous buildings in Europe, the Eiffel Tower was built in the blink of an eye. Construction began in 1887 and finished promptly in early 1889. It had to be completed by the date of the World’s Fair later that year.

The current height of the iron tent is 1083 feet, every inch of which has become a beacon to the world, proclaiming beauty and love. 7,000,000 people visit the tower each year, making it the most visited monument in the world (that requires an entry fee).

You can climb to the top, or gaze at it from below, but either way, this gentle iron giant will make your jaw drop.

Big Ben, London, England

Famous buildings in Europe come in every shape, size, and capacity, including clocks. 

And Big Ben is arguably the most famous clock in the world.

Recently renamed Elizabeth Tower, but still affectionately known as Big Ben, the clock tower has had a tumultuous history of damage and repair, but still stands tall as a testament to human skill and an eye for beauty.

Summit the 334-step staircase to see inside the workings of the clock and explore the medieval Westminister Hall after you’ve returned to ground level.

St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City

St. Peter’s Basilica has been a part of the Roman cityscape since ancient times, first commissioned under the rule of Constantine, built on the location where the apostle, Saint Peter, is buried.

It was rebuilt in the 1500s. The new design was put together by Michangelo and other architects, instantly deeming it a work of art. St. Peter’s is the pinnacle of famous architecture in Europe.

The Basilica is free to enter, but there is often a line waiting to witness the intricacies of the magnificent craftsmanship. There are museum exhibits inside and regular Mass is held within the building as well.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence, Italy

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is an ode to its religion and its city. This cathedral, one of the largest in the world, has an exterior adorned with the colors of flowering spring, corresponding to its name, which means Our Lady of the Flower. Florence also means ‘City of Flowers’.

The interior is just as enchanting and always free to enter!

This famous landmark in Europe is a synthesis of marble and stained glass that captures the heart of each and every person who visits it.

Buckingham Palace, London, England

Buckingham Palace is the hub of the royal family in England, providing both the living and working space of the monarch.

Originally called Buckingham House, it has been enlarged and redesigned over the years to become the Greco-Roman reminiscent building it is today. The beauty of its exterior, interior, and gardens is revered by people from all over the world.
