Please note, this is NOT social anxiety. I'm trying to be as scientifically accurate as I can, so I decided to create a separate film for each of the anxiety disorders. (I will be taking a break now, though, since this one completely drained me).
Most videos on youtube are about "anxiety" which is pretty inaccurate. There are a couple of different anxiety disorders: panic attacks, agoraphobia, social anxiety, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder. All of these differ and I think each deserves a separate video, not a messy mash-up.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who sent me emails describing their anxiety disorders. I wouldn't have written this without your help.
Severe, unrelenting anxiety disorder can make it all but impossible to hold a job. Stress caused by a reprimand from your boss, chatter from co-workers, or complaints from an unhappy customer can overwhelm you to the point where you lose the capacity to get through a workday.
If you are extremely sensitive to stress to the level where your anxiety level leaves you non-functional, you may have a viable and legitimate claim for Social Security disability benefits.
As I discuss in this video, anxiety cases in Social Security disability claims can be difficult because there are no objective tests like an MRI or CT scan that allows your doctor to “see” your anxiety. But long term treatment records and support from your doctor in the form of a functional capacity evaluation or a statement that you meet Listing 12.06 can be enough to convince a judge to award benefits.
Many of my clients who struggle with anxiety also struggle with idea of starting the process and applying for disability. Often, knowing how the process works can reduce your stress level.
I spent most of my 20’s depressed, lonely and on strong antidepressants. By age 27, I had given up on ever overcoming my social anxiety & shyness. Even worse than that, I had given up on myself. I was my own worst enemy, always calling myself harsh names like ‘loser’ and ‘ugly.’ I hated myself and believed I was worthless. Click here to see more
How to get rid of anxiety attacks - do anxiety and panic attacks keep recurring? An anxiety or panic attack on its own is not actually dangerous or life threatening but it can be terrifying. As mentioned before, panic disorder is the persistent fear of repeated attacks and ironically this FEAR of future attacks is the main reason why future attacks occur. This is called the ‘cycle of fear’.
The reason we feel so much fear in the first place is that the symptoms of a panic attack often make us think that something is seriously wrong with us – that we are having a heart attack or that we are going to ‘lose control’ or collapse etc. Understandably we react to such thoughts with intense fear and our symptoms increase
To begin with, we may not be able to do much to prevent panicky feelings arising but what CBT can do is to teach you tried and tested Cognitive and Behavioral techniques that enable you to limit any over-reaction TO the feelings. This then helps us feel less fearful DURING an attack and less worried about a recurrence of the attack. Less fear means less panic means less symptoms as time goes on and when you lose your fear of panic it stops happening.
How does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy help with Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Agoraphobia?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a short term therapy and is based on the idea that your thoughts and behaviors affect how you feel.
The main reason that panic attacks persist is due to the fact that we misinterpret perfectly harmless but frightening symptoms of anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most effective treatments available with a success rate of between 75-90%. People who have undergone CBT are also far less likely to rely on medication.
The main program is divided into 4 ‘Steps’
STEP 1 – KNOWLEDGE
This step is incredibly important when it comes to anxiety and panic because it is a LACK of understanding that gets us caught up in the fear cycles in the first place. You will realize how this happens when you take the first step.
There is SO much information online about panic and anxiety it may seem that we are well informed – but information on it’s own is not enough – it has to be explained VERY carefully and the connection between the information and YOUR EXACT experience made clear so that your brain receives the ‘aha’ moment that will start the recovery process.
This step is quite simple – but don’t let that fool you – If you understand anxiety and panic CORRECTLY you will be half way to recovery – it is that powerful.
How to get rid of anxiety attacks - 2 – SKILLS
At Cognitive Therapy Online we aren’t great believers in ‘facing the fear and doing it anyway’ – we know that people with panic HAVE been bravely facing their fear – REPEATEDLY – and yet the fear doesn’t get any easier to bear. Thankfully there IS another way to deal with panic.
Of course you want to get your life back to normal – you want to do all the things you used to do – and you WILL – but first of all we will teach you SKILLS that will help you deal with ANY anxiety very quickly and effectively. These skills have been perfected over the last 50 years through the combined studies of CBT therapists around the world – the bottom line is – they WORK!.
So I really wanted to do this video for a few years but I wanted to make sure I was in the right mindset with experience and advice that would benefit others before I went ahead and filmed.
I truly feel that knowledge is power and speaking openly and honestly about mental illness is the way forward for breaking down the barriers and enabling people to recognise that there is help available out there.
If you would like a more in depth video about my mental health story or even a what a person with anxiety hears vs what's actually said do let me know in the comments below.
Once again, I really hope this video helps someone. I was feeling brave and felt like it was finally the right time to come and talk about this issue.
Anxiety Disorders can be caused by a variety of things ranging from brain chemistry to traumatic events. The funny thing is, there is no cause that can be proved with 100% certainty. Look at a bunch of websites and you will see that under "cause" for anxiety there is a sentence that says something like this:
"The causes of anxiety disorders aren't fully understood. Life experiences such as traumatic events appear to trigger anxiety disorders in people who are already prone to anxiety. Inherited traits also can be a factor."
Isn't that interesting! Anxiety Disorders are not yet that well understood and even mood disorders in general. Doctors can make a long list of symptoms that can be proven just by asking the patient, however, when it comes to causes, it's a shot in the dark.
In this video I explore some of the causes that are usually mentioned when doing some online research as well as my own idea on what can cause anxiety disorders.
I want to make one thing clear in this blog post, as stated in the video: These are my Top 5 Treatments for Anxiety because they work for me! There are millions of things you can do to treat your anxiety that can range from a new diet, exercises and sleeping habits. The way we treat anxiety is different for everyone who experiences these nasty symptoms. What's important is that we realize how many options are out there and how accessible they are!
Don't forget to keep the promise you made at the beginning of the video. You have to try each of these things and not give up if they do not work. It goes without saying that if you are not going to ever take medication, don't do it just for the heck of it because you made a promise to Scott. What I mean is that for the meditation and things you can basically do for free, stick with them for the long haul. Everything is difficult before it is easy but this should not discourage you from creating new rituals.
Anxiety will continue to be a pain in the ass for you if you're not willing to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Practicing yoga may mean you get up earlier during the week. Seeing a psychologist may mean that you experience way more anxiety than normal during your first session. Sometimes there is a cost to mental health but let's not quit before we even start.
You got this!
Panic attacks and anxiety are a problem that a large percentage of the population is facing in today’s world. Here you will learn some psychological tips to help reduce the symptoms of a panic attack as well as reduce your overall anxiety levels. Think good thoughts. Now I know this tip is very generic, but it works. The next tips will be more specialized, so keep watching.
Eating healthy and the food you eat is super important when it comes to managing stress hormones. Also try to cut back on your total caffeine levels, since caffeine can actually trigger a panic attack. If none of the tips in the video work, I suggest seeing a professional doctor. When you are having a panic attack, make sure you have someone who loves you, and is patient enough to help you and talk you through the panic. This could be anyone, a friend, girlfriend, parents, or even a brother. Another great tip is to get into a routine so that your mind and body can start to expect things, this will give you comfort and safety when it comes to a natural remedy for anxiety. Hello,
In this video I will be defining the anxiety disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Video Chapters:
- The definition of Body Dysmorphic disorder - 2:24
- Understanding 'perceived defects' using my own examples - 5:00
- Signs and Symptoms - 8:56
- Statistics - 11:01
- Responding to someone with BDD - 11:52
- Summary - 12:39
BDD is a mental illness in which a person is excessively concerned about a perceived defect in his or her appearance and this preoccupation with body image causes significant distress. (The Brain Book, 2014)
I am trying to keep my videos to a healthy length so I will only be defining the illness, however, I will use some of my experience of living with BDD to help explain my definition. In later videos I will go into more detail about what it’s like to live with BDD, but I hope this video will help explain, in a bit more detail, what BDD actually is.
Thanks for watching!
Take care
- The Recover Clinic -
- Mind.org - BDD Foundation - NHS - with all my videos, I'm trying to explain everything as clearly as possible and provide examples from my life to help you understand. I might not get everything exact every time, but I wanted to give it a go, and I hope it will be of benefit to you. This Vlog is therefore from my perspective, but I do appreciate that not everyone will have had the same experience as myself - we are all different after all. I have also tried, where applicable, to reference everything correctly, but we are all human and make mistakes - please stick with me.
